Hiiiiiiiiiii :3

I'm sitting here enjoying a delicious Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Cider, and I decided I should stick to what I said last time and post more often. So here's a new post! Since the last one I watched Oppenheimer at the theater, but I don't think it was an IMAX showing or anything. I thought it was perfectly paced (the 3 hour runtime didn't feel like it dragged at all), I thought the non-chronological structure flowed very well, and the soundtrack was very nice. The performances were all very good, especially Cillian Murphy, and the only criticism that really comes to my mind is some sort of clumsy writing (can't remember a whole lot of specific examples, but I remember some times where I rolled my eyes). Anyway, incredible movie, easy recommendation for anyone who likes dramatic movies with some political commentary. So, as I mentioned in my last subpost, I might talk a little bit about synchromysticism, but I'm going to assume, since I'm not totally "in the zone" as far as my writing right now, my analysis may end up a little anemic, and so I may talk a little bit more in my next post if I feel like elaborating on some stuff. Now: while my feelings on belief and spirituality are pretty strongly positive, I don't have many spiritual beliefs myself, or at least not many I feel confident enough about to say I'm assured of my belief. I would say I believe more in synchromysticism than most other spiritual ideas, at least as I see it. It's sort of like fate, but not entirely? It's the general idea that coincidence, mundane happenings, have spiritual significance. I tend to think of it more as "mundane happenings can have spiritual causes". It's a pretty broad idea, you *could* interpret it as fate, karma, or a sort of literary bent to the universe, or you could take it to mean something more actively magical, the idea that will and belief are able to change the physical world. I often end up thinking about what Peter J. Carrol, one of the founders of the Chaos Magic tradition, said about synchromysticism, that "... an event in the material world... can always be excused as a coincidence, but most magicians would be quite content with being able to arrange coincidences." While I can't remember if this is from Mage the Awakening from the Chronicles of Darkness series of Tabletop RPGs, or if its from Mage the Ascension of the World

of Darkness series, I tend to borrow the terminology of "vulgarity"; something like creating fire or an object from nothing is vulgar magic that cannot be explained otherwise, while synchromystical magic is non-vulgar, the usage of spiritual means to interrupt the natural flow of events to effect a desired result. The hypothetical synchromystical spell does not appear incredible or even impossible, it appears as if nothing has happened besides one's desires. I consider myself especially lucky in most circumstances, but I have at times characterized it as a strength of will sufficient to synchromystically influence events to my favor. It's a little ridiculous, but I don't mind it I guess; I think believing in ridiculous things just makes things more fun :3 Anyway, I'm running out of steam here. I may talk more about this stuff, but also maybe not, I couldn't say. I'll probably be much more brief, that's for sure. See you around!

Ive come to the realization that the reason theres a small but loud group of people who are showing nothing but hate for the rwrb movie is because they have completely unrealistic expectations. People are forgetting that this is a cheesy romantic comedy, thats supposed to look and feel like a cheesy romantic comedy. This isnt going to be moonlight or gods own country or some other critically acclaimed, oscar nomintaed queer film that makes straight people go "hmm maybe they do deserve rights and respect🤷‍♀️"

Its gonna be a cheesy adult romantic comedy, thats gonna be a bit camp and over the top and thats exactly why its so good. I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch. I want to watch it and see two queer people fall in love and thats it. Thats how deep it goes. Maybe a sprinkling of politcal commentary in between.

There is this issue thats become bigger and bigger every passing year, that people expect every bit of queer representation to be the best thing ever. There can not ever be anything cringey or different or silly, and if it is then they send endless hate towards it, and in an industry that already hates to show queer people on screen, its this viscious cycle of someone finally being greenlit to make queer media, the media gets endless hate for not being perfect, the studio cancels the queer media before giving it a chance because theyve just 'proven that it wont make money', suddenly everyone is saying 'why do they keep canceling queer media😢', cycle repeats.

Im so over it. Let gay people be slightly cringy or cheesy or campy. Let queer media exist without putting it on this huge pedestal. Just enjoy things! And if you dont, dont watch it! Move on, find something better to do.

I want light-hearted rom coms about queer adults just being queer adults and havig fun. I want comedy adventures where the characters just happen to be gay. I want more horror where at the end the final girl kisses a girl and can't belive they lived but not because they're gay. (suprisingly several of these exist and I love it)

I don't always want to think about the plight and horrors of being queer today with every queer movie I watch.

Sometimes, yes of course, I want to be seen on that level.

(Nimona, which came this weekend is a perfect example of a queer movie where I felt very very seen but also had a good time and was an incredibly silly fantasy adventure movie. But, still had the queer expereince intertwined.)

I'm looking forward to a movie that will be 90% rom com, and 10% realism/heavyness. re: being outed is a real thing that happens to people. famous people.

Alex and Henry go through some heavy shit. There's seriously traumatizing stuff at the end of the book. They're both dealing with mental illnesses, complex families, and rock-or-a-hard-place situations. I want all of that honored.

And, at the same time, I'm expecting a straight-to-streaming, mid-budget, movie that had to pass through a LOT of straight hands and board meetings to get to us.

Not to say we should love and accept every queer movie that comes out automatically, they have been done wrong in the past. (example: I skipped call me by your name bc the age gap still makes me too uncomfortable to watch)

But we have to give queer movies a chance to fit the genre they were made for, the tone they are made to be, and give queer creators a chance to show they are us annd they know us. The director is Bi. He's spent so much time going on about how much he related to Alex that he needed to make this movie. It's his first directing role, and I'm giving him a chance.

RVB RESTORATION THOUGHTS!!!!

LONG POST IM SO SORRY I HAD A LOT OF FEELINGS

(Im so sorry this got so long, but i got emotional while writing it so please bear with me, read this like its the morning paper while u eat breakfast or something i have alot to say)

Before I go into the things I didn't like I do want to focus on some positives.

-Like I said in an earlier post, Geoff's acting…he absolutely killed it, and maybe this is because I'm a little bit Geoff/Grif biased but he was giving so much emotion and everyone else felt a little bit flat. Also only he could have delivered the "Come with me" line with so much Homoeroticism -I Had a pretty fun time watching the fight in the second half, The references to Monty we're sweet and getting to see Tex and Carolina fight together was pretty epic! -A good handful of jokes got me good. "23rd in my class" Shelia translating Caboose's Spanish to Lopez

Ok……. the next bit of this will get a little bit negative, but I do want to say this is coming from a place of deep love and care for this series. I have run this blog for like 6/7 years now and I've been a fan of this show for double that. My biggest fear is that fans get the same treatment we did when no one liked RVBZero. I have criticisms. This is a 21 year old series that so many people have had a part in and so many have loved. I was not looking for perfection, I wasn't even looking for something good. I was looking for an ending to the stories of characters people have held in their hearts for 21 years. Unfortunately, what I feel we were left with was a hastily thrown together hour of basically nothing.

-Why weren't they friends…..Why weren't they friends…No one cared for the others. I understand that we have semi warped perceptions of the characters from fanon works and things of that nature. But even in canon, the reds and blue care about each other. On their own team and the other team. Simmons, Grif, Tucker, and Caboose spent MONTHS together in chorus and same for Donut/Sarge/Wash. I've recently rewatched blood gulch and Caboose and Sarge have a great dynamic! Tucker and Grif canonically get along pretty well. Simmons was ON BLUE TEAM for like a hot minute there. THEY KNOW EACH OTHER AND CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER. This was zero percent present in this film. No one had any motivation to look for Tucker. No one cared that it was Tuckers body inside the suit. THE REDS LEFT CABOOSE FOR DEAD!!!!!! THEY JUST LEFT HIM!!!!

-Tucker, I'm so sorry baby girl, this was supposed to be your arc, your moment. You were hardly in it. No build up to how he became the Meta. The scene where he breaks out of it to not kill caboose was the best part of the arc. And he just wakes up and remembers it "like someone elses Nightmare??" ok sure

-Wash………………WHAT THE FUCK???? WHAT THE FUCK???????????????? WHAT THE FUCK??????? WHAT THE FUCK???? TO RUIN THIS MANS ENTIRE CHARACTER ARC BY MAKING HIM COMPLETELY OBSOLETE. PUTTING HIM IN SOME RANDOM HOSPITAL FOR AN UNKNOWN INJURY THAT HAPPENS OFF SCREEN AND ISN'T EXPLAINED. HAVE HIM HALUCINATING DOC FOR SOME FUCKING REASON. HAVE HIM SHOW UP TO THE FINAL BATTLE AND DO ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING BUT JUMP OFF A FUCKING CLIFF AND NOT SAY A WORD TO ANY OF THE RED AND BLUES I AM LIERALLY ABOUT TO FUCKING CRY TYPING THIS I AM LITERALLY SO FUCKING PISSED OFF. AGENT WASHINGTON, THE CHARACTER THAT WAS SO HAPPY IN THE SEASON RIGHT BEFORE CHORUS JUST TO BE ON BLUE TEAM AND HAVE A FUCKING FAMILY AGAIN. JUST SIDELINE HIM FOR NO FUCKING REASON AND THEN NOT LET HIM SPEAK TO ANY OF HIS FRIENDS EXCEPT CAROLINA AND DEAD DOC. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE FACT THAT TUCKER BEING THE META WAS LITERALLY A PLOT POINT CATERED TO HAVE WASH BE INVOLVED. THIS IS LIKE AGENT WASHINGTON ANGST BAIT 101. YES IM A TUCKINGTON SHIPPER BUT PUT ALL SHIPPING ASIDE, THEY WERE STILL FRIENDS, THEY WERE FRIENDS THEY WERE FRIENDS.

Grimmons. I am disappointed. But really not surprised. Honestly for everything I disliked I thought Grimmons was handled ok… at this point im like….. they couldn't even throw us a bone. company was dying, final season airing, and they couldn't even throw us a solid Grimmons queerbait joke. Its whatever….I don't wanna get too upset about shipping because at the end of the day, ships becoming canon isn't what shipping is all about (says Tumblr user "RVB-Canon-Grimmons) you get what im saying.

-Donut…..where was he…..Fucking Homophobic honestly

-DOC IS DEAD?????????????????????????????? FUCKING WHY???

-Sarge's death was fine, I'm not upset by it I just didn't feel like it was emotionally satisfying. Especially after the shock of them leaving Caboose and the much better scene of tucker fighting the meta's control over him to not hurt caboose.

-PEOPLE CALLED U SIR ALL THROUGHOUT CHORUS SIMMONS WHAT THE FUCK??????????? WHY IS SIMMONS PROMOTED AND INCHARGE OF NO ONE???? WHY DID GRIF LEAVE HIM???

Im sorry………..this is so long………just remeber this is only my opinions and if u don't agree thats totally ok!!!!! I am just a critical bitch….

ive been hearing a lot of legitimate criticism of will wood and his fan base from people who like his music, but see him as a pretentious white guy, and his fanbase as an extension of that.

now i havent been in the ww fandom v long, but given the depths i have gone in it i feel at least somewhat comfortable saying im not sure exactly where this impression is coming from.

i see him writing very eclectic erratic and idiosyncratic songs, and people having a variety of interpretations of them, and i can see how that might come off as pretentiousness, especially bc some of his fans really do cross a line in terms of a gatekeepy parasocial attachment to will

but i haven't really seen anyone going THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO INTERPRET THIS SONG YOURE STUPID IF YOU DONT SEE IT or smth to that effect

i acknowledge tho that there is also some legitimate background to this perception, bc what i have seen is:

-will playing characters live and joking w his audience in ways that are often either easily misinterpreted or clearly just someone with extreme mental health issues

-will being maybe mildly annoyed at how his fans often... over analyze his songs and upset when they overstep boundaries, and sometimes expressing that in non ideal ways.

-wills fans being incredibly obsessed with him and his music, which to the outside observer can be annoying i think (but honestly this to me reads more as a bunch of nd ppl w who have hyperfixated/have a special interest related to him)

-the lyrics to wills songs all being very confusing, especially the farther back in his discography you go, and his fans acting like their meanings are obvious on a first glance even when they arent (which is all the time)

-will pulling references from sources that can be seen as pretentious and off putting, esp when coming from a white guy (taoism, it's always sunny, modern psychology, 'classic' films, name dropping authors of philosophy, etc.)

-wills stances often being contrarian and often (especially on first glance) seemingly being that way purely for the sake of being contrarian

-will explaining his stances in fancy and grandiloquent language (a note on this one in particular: i think of this as not really a sign of being pretentious, potentially bc of my own struggles w it. i often accidentally use a bunch of complicated words and descriptions that wouldn't make sense to me if i was the one hearing them, not because im trying to be exclusionary or come off as ✨intelligent✨, but bc it was explained to me in those terms and i went through the process of studying it in that terminology and being told i had to use that terminology, and now im too dumb to translate what im thinking back into language that's actually comprehensible)

but i feel that a lot of these things are really overstated in how often they happen. by and large, i think a lot of this response is a misreading of the facts that his fanbase is really passionate to a somewhat obsessive degree, will is very passionate about the things he likes and the things he believes in, and both will and the majority of his fan base are pretty mentally unstable and/or neurodivergent.

from what ive seen, will isn't trying to be pretentious in any way and is legitimately just expressing himself. his fanbase despite their occasional issues are ultimately pretty much just very passionate people. and also he does not hate them! to quote the man himself

"guys, i don't hate you! stop telling people i hate you! stop doing that; i like you people! 99.999 percent of you are really good, and 99.999 percent of the people who piss me off are just going through it! i don't know where people are getting this idea the whole like 'will wood hates his fandom' yeah i know i said i hate you all in that song but... you know, it's a song! i like you guys."

if you have counter info/arguments though id love to see them. im always looking for new perspectives, and as i said ive *just* started listening to will wood and looking into his lore. i couldve totally missed smth and id love to hear it if i have.

WOO 2023

Lets talk about my top 10 films that came out in 2022! I watched a lot of films last year!

1. Everything everywhere all at once

I could write essays on this movie but putting it simply I watched this film in theatres 5 times. There was nothing in this movie that dissapointed me. Its an incredible example of nihilism vs existentialism and I cried 3/5 times i saw it. I now own it on dvd.

2. Bullet train

Bullet train I saw ever so slightly less coming in at 4 cinema visits! Fantastic visuals and soundtrack. Wonderful casting and a fabulously written script! One of my favourite examples of a film that is just fun to watch. I'll be honest on the 3rd and 4th time I was a bit bored but theres not as much going on to rewatch as EEAAO.

3. Black panther: Wakanda forever

I started crying and I dont know if I stopped? An incredibly touching tribute to Chadwick Boseman and a heartbreaking reminder of who we've lost. I think this is the best marvel movie since endgame honestly.

4. The unbearable weight of massive talent

Nick Cage is unironically one of my favourite actors and him and pedro pascal have created an amazing piece of media here. It is so funny and thats all it needs to be! Its just 2 guys getting to know eachother. Fair enough theres some action and spy shit going on but with that removed it is just pure fun.

5. NOPE

A slightly controversial one I know, However, I will never get over the wacky inflatable arm tube men. Im not even joking. They are what made me want to see the film in the first place! No but an excellent example of terror vs fear and a perfect film to discuss questions like "how far should you go for the shot" and issues like exploitation of animals.

6. Three thousand years of longing.

First and foremost its Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba enough said. This movie is gorgeous. The cinematography is beautiful and the costumes the makeup the set design the props my word they did not dissapoint! The message of the film is largely isolation but also behind that theres a sense of love is eternal and how much would you do for love. I couldn't recommend this film more.

7. Matilda

Ok this one is the music and choreography for me. It's a fun film and i loce the set design for it. The costume for mrs wormwood is to die for and I want it all. Theres not a huge moral like the others on the list its a good example of what goes around comes around and good prevails. The camerawork is amazing too.

8. The Menu

Everyone in this film is an awful person EXCEPT Anya Taylor Joy's Character and I live for it. The pacing is wonderful, the camerawork again fantastic and the characterisation!!! There is so much tension and it keeps building until you reach the climax its a wonderful. I like to think the film is about anti capitalism and the death of creatives due to the preassure of critics.

9. The banshees of inisherin

My favourite type of media is where nothing happens but SO MUCH happens. (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead is a wonderful example of this) and Banshees is an amazing example of that. At its core its about loss and lobelyness. Plus It has a RELATIVELY ACCURATE autistic character and thats my favourite part.

10. Don't worry darling

DON'T BOO ME DON'T YOU DARE. OK I ENJOYED IT. SOMEONE HAD TO! HARRY'S ACTING WASN'T EVEN THAT BAD YES IT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER BUT THERE WAS SO MUCH SHIT GOING ON CAN YOU BLAME HIM! plus I was living for the drama of DWD and no it was not at all about feminism or the female orgasm but it was about control and it was a fantastic film to showcase that.

Thor does not get an honorable mention and I will not see avatar 2 because I want it to flop.

the worst part about the information-social media ecosystem rn is that we’ll have, like, people will support Thing. then you’ll have an anti-Thing market emerge. and then you have the anti-anti-Thing market. backlash to backlash, dust to dust.

the current thing with this is “wokeness”, a word I hate more than I hate ranch dressing. the problem with the anti-anti-woke guys is that they generally don’t acknowledge that socialists have been critiquing identity politics for decades before the first conservative ever uttered the word “woke”. and ignoring the criticisms of this from the left strikes me as not engaging with the skeptics’ strongest argument by pretending they don’t exist. I get that the socialists arguing this are generally smarter than Gary from Facebook, which makes them harder targets. either way. I just don’t like this very much. it’s shallow.

that preamble out of the way, I was watching YouTube video from someone on team anti-anti. I’m not sure why I keep doing this because I always get disappointed for the same reasons, but some may call it masochism and I dont appreciate being non-sexually kink shamed.

the person in the video brought up nerdy youtube film critics who were angry about the Star Wars sequel trilogy as a pet example, but I feel like this is a really weak point. the sequel trilogy is done now, and knowing how poorly it played out, we may have to admit that the bitter nerds who said that it starred a woman and two men of color as just a cyclical marketing decision might have seen something we did not. they did basically nothing with oscar isaac and john boyega which is so. imagine signing them to your movie and doing nothing with these amazing actors! felony! go to jail! at least boyega has the good sense to be openly critical of this. and as for rey, she doesn’t exactly have an arc.

I rewatched the force awakens for the first time in a long time in a while a few months ago and, now that we’re out of the cultural moment it was released in, it feels very different. very 2015 pilled in the sense that it aged like milk that's been sitting in the fridge for 8 years and has begun to cultivate bacteria that no microbiologist has ever observed. and i don't think the bitter nerds were wrong to interpret kylo ren as a strawmen of, well, people like them who don't want people messing with a franchise they have a lot of emotional investment in. and while you can write this off as them saying "we don't want women to enjoy star wars", observing that these movies are ultimately products, disney aspires to have a larger net worth than god, and not trusting where they're going with this... it's not entirely unfair, even though there are very real problems of racism and misogyny in nerd circles.

sometimes when we defend stuff from the angle that representation is good, we inadvertently forget that the "you can be a jedi too, little girl or black child of unspecified gender" thing is mostly done with the intention of consumer outreach because we're biased in favor of rep. the bitter nerds are not, and it gives them shinigami eyes. pandering is a bit more obvious when you're not the one being catered to. or something. i also don't think this is exclusively right wing, it's just that a lot of lefties are more reluctant to say something. if you phrase yourself incorrectly, it looks REALLY sketchy, even if you frame it through the "ultimately, these are products" lens, and sometimes it's best to just not comment.

i saw critical drinker, who's one of the more annoying of these youtube film critic types, on a podcast semi recently, and when he drops the anti-woke kayfabe, you just see a frustrated guy who writes screenplays as a hobby and doesn't like how many female-led stories skimp on developing conflict, or the disappearance of the mentor/student dynamic in storytelling and why this is doesn't bode well for franchise reboots that are meant to pass the torch, how unearned that feels. and even though i think his videos are cringey as shit, they're coming from a real place of caring about stories and being frustrated that the biggest purveyors of them don't seem to care back. i'm sympathetic to this, even if i think "wokeness" is an intellectually lazy copout and the preferred method of delivery makes me want to get my eardrum pierced.

iunno. i think, maybe, if you want to talk about these guys, it would make for a better story if you talked to them. or at the very least, try to understand what the substantive meat of their problem is as a fly on the wall. even if you ultimately decide that they're being irrational, "irrational" is not synonymous with "random". that's an important thing not to lose sight of. and while i do believe a lot of the anti-woke stuff is irrational, i do think it's worth trying to make a real effort to figure out what's going on underneath it all. but thinking too much gives you wrinkles, or whatever malibu stacey said. oh well!

Im a huge horror movie buff and i think that genre is a perfect example of how, in this weird pursuit to make cinema appeal to everybody of every human experience and walk of life, it often just ends up appealing to nobody.

Like, okay, let me be more specific. Let's use The Conjuring franchise.

I LOVE the first Conjuring film. It's a fantastic supernatural horror film. Has a really cool premise, harkens back to the old Amityville Horror classic but with more modern filmmaking tech and capabilities, and it knows how to do a "true story" (insofar as you believe in demons or the word of the Warrens) horror film. It's creepy, it's unsettling, it builds and builds and knows just when to release the tension to give you a big thrill without relying entirely on jumpscares. And it was loved by audiences and critics alike, and for good reason.

But that doesn't mean that making it a franchise was a good idea. You gotta remember that horror films getting positive critical attention wasn't much of a thing outside of horror circles until very VERY recently. Horror has always been a bit of a pariah among other genre films. It's an acquired taste that most people can't acquire. You can rely on a steady and consistent audience when you decide to become a horror filmmaker, but you just can't rely on that audience to grow.

And you definitely shouldn't try to pull outsiders in by force. Outside of the first one, I've seen The Conjuring 2 and The Nun. Both are... underwhelming, at best. At worst, I wouldn't even call them horror anymore. The creepiness is gone, it's no longer vaguely unsettling, it's all jumpscares, the payoffs are in these big action sequences instead of a thrill meant to instill fear. They feel more like action movies, and not even very good ones. It's like they're trying to ride on their initial success by appealing to audiences they just don't have, and have lost the foundational horror audience in the process.

And the thing is, I feel like it could've been good. The concept of an anthology series based on the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren could've been a really cool horror franchise, if they actually stuck to their target audience instead of trying to pull in the fringes. In the case of The Conjuring, I think that was just profit motivated, but the point still stands when youre talking about any form of representation, I feel.

How many times do you hear, especially on the internet, that x media was bad or even "problematic" because they don't appeal to a hugely sweeping demographic of everybody on earth and every human experience? "I think as an adult that this pixar movie for children is the death of art." "I think as a white person that blackwashing exists." "I think this underground arthouse film was snuffed at the academy awards." "I think not having every type of minority on screen is inherently bigoted." Okay! But sometimes movies arent made for you! If you feel like there isnt enough attention paid to your experiences, thats one thing. Thats an issue of your target audience not being considered in the industry, but its not an issue of other target audiences having movies for them. We can have both, one existing doesnt negate or take away from yours, youre fighting the wrong crusade here.

And honestly, I can tell you as a horror fan that saw The Conjuring rise and fall as a series that you really DONT want widely sweeping hypergeneralized art that appeals to everybody. I don't give a shit about that Annabelle doll that gets good SEO with its urban legends, can I please just have a good horror movie made for horror audiences again instead of all the thrills being sanded down and sanitized for action audience ticket sales?

i actually disagree. not every character has to be a favorite (as we all know) and there's nothing wrong with not liking them. You dont need a good reason. As long as they don't spread hate against them, quitely not liking them is fine.

it doesnt make someone misogynistic or racist to just not like a character. its a neutral thing, not everyone's vibe will suit everyone, and not everyone finds the same character interesting.

on the whole are female characters neglected across fandom? sure.

That doesn't mean a person should force themselves to like a paring or a character, just so they dont offend someone LMAO thats not what fandom is for. its people engaging with shit they love for fun and creating stuff from that love.

You seem to be missing my point and manipulating my words.

I did not say that disliking Guinevere makes you misogynistic or racist, but that there are people who ARE that will spread hate.

When I say you need a “reason” not to like a character, that reason can be as simple as “I don’t like her personality” or “I don’t like her vibe”.

THAT is a personal preference a person can have about a character that has nothing to do with a fan-driven ship.

Saying “Gwen sucks because she ruins Merthur!” has nothing to do with her as a character or her portrayal. It is not a commentary or opinion of her character at all, but just a blatantly rude statement because Merthur is not in the show.

If Merlin and Arthur were set up and explored as a potential relationship within the context of the show, and they ended up not doing it/breaking them up within the show, saying you don’t like Guinevere for her role in that plot line would be completely valid. Because they are not explored as a potential relationship, that is not a real criticism of her character.

Nothing I have said implies that you have to like Guinevere, or her relationship with Arthur.

I personally like the chemistry he and Merlin have better. If they had been willing or planning to go that route, I would have much preferred it, but that is not what happened, and that does not mean that what we got is inherently bad because of my personal preference.

People mistake opinions for critiques.

Do not misunderstand, many critiques are opinions, but most opinions are not critiques.

For example: my mother cannot watch the first fifteen minutes of Pixar’s Up because it upsets her too much. She then goes on to say that “it’s horrible”.

Those are two entirely separate concepts. You can dislike something, or be upset by something, but still recognize the quality of that something.

This can work both ways. You can love something, and recognize the lack of quality in it.

Cult classics are a fantastic example. The film Rocky Horror Picture Show is not a well-made, high quality movie. In this case, that is an intentional part of the film’s goal, but regardless, nearly every part of that movie is lackluster in execution. However, I and many other people love it. I am not saying that it is a good film because I personally love it. I can recognize something as poor quality even if I personally enjoy it.

In regards to Guinevere, you are well within your right not to like her. I have my own qualms with the character myself. Her writing in later seasons started lacking the spark and personality she had in season 1, in a way that was clearly not an intentional development. Notice how I did not outright say “Guinevere is a bad character” just because I feel her writing got worse.

When you choose to share your opinion in a public space, you should be thoughtful of how you do so. Not everyone will be, obviously, but if you have no ill intentions, you should be.

THAT is what I mean when I say you should have a “real reason” for disliking a character. If you have an opinion that is a valid personal preference you want to share, that is completely fine, but otherwise, you should “quietly dislike the character” as you put it.

Even if you do not intend spread hate with your own post, there are people who will use it as an opportunity for them to do so.

THAT is my point.

You are correct. Fandoms are meant to be places to engage with something they love, to create and talk about it with other fans. It is meant to be fun, which is why more people, in all fandoms, should think more when choosing what to say and what not to say and how to say it.

If more people made the individual effort to be polite and understanding with their opinions of media, so many fandoms would not be as toxic as they are.

THAT is my goal in saying all this.

I have not been perfect in the past with being considerate or polite in sharing my opinions, and every time, it led to negativity and frustration that could’ve been avoid if I or the other person had stopped to consider how our words could come across.

It ruins the experience of a fandom for the people involved, and many times steers curious individuals away from the content itself out of fear or distaste for the fandom’s behavior.

I hope that this clears things up a bit.

my master’s application got rejected. i’ve not told anyone because it’s something i want to keep to myself for myself for abit. i’m not very sad about it, but i’m not very good at problem solving, and i don’t know how my dad’s going to react because we didn’t exactly put a plan b into place. i don’t know what i like, what i’m good at, what i want to do. he wants me to be a teacher, and i’m sure i could be one, but i’ve not had a single adult job in my life and i don’t know that i’m going to be given the space to explore that. which, is a pretty privileged position to be in(to not have had to work) but i don’t know how to suggest a day job to him or whatever interim job to him. i dont know where to begin either.

another dumb little thing is i dont know how to think about learning and growing beyond the realm of books. everything in my life i’ve had a question about i’ve referred to words, texts, novels.. my bestfriend tells me i am sorely missing out by not considering the importance of films and other mediums. i am not very good with evaluating films, which i guess doesnt make me a lesser critical thinker, just a limited one

story is bad as expected but i had to see it. HOWEVER maybe it is nostalgia talking but i remember the 1st one looking absolutely incredible but this one... i think a marvel film looks similar now. like there were some scenes that were obviously showing off and better than anything else, buuuut it wasnt the whole thing. i did see it in 3d and i did get a headache during but i cannot tell if it was the film or just my fucked up reactions to barometric pressure.

HIGHLY recommend going in not remembering anything from the first one because then youre just like wtf the blue people dont have five fingers??? how many do they have??? PANDORA IS A MOON???

creature design was so fantastic, exactly why i came. dunkleosteus shark, turtle whale, many fun worms. so good. that being said it was really funny that the corals at night were doing the coral fluorescence under UV.

water looked good, particularly when it was overcast and raining. but like not much to say there.

they made the sea people maori????? hello???? call me a hater but go farther with your alien cultures. i dotn know why i was surprised.

i vividly remember from avatar 1 that after watching my parents were discussing the parallels in the narrative that i didnt even notice and really taught me about like. critically viewing film. but the parallels here were kinda funny. the whaling ship is whale shaped (which is so fucking obvious when it rolls over and they have water coming through cracks like its blowholes). whaling guy getting his arm ripped off by the whale whose flipper he cut.

the entire movie is a dad movie for dads. its all about dads. sick of dads by the end. do something else.

i dont understand the whole arc with the human kid because like. he seems to be found family at the start but then at the end they act like its a revelation?!?!? what the fuck????

glad the marines are still bad. hooah.

many questions about how the blue people work. why do the sea tribes and forest tribes speak the same language but have physically different adaptations. what. i think their head tails should be prehensile.

Can you expand on the impact of islamophobia on dune please? I felt like a lot of parts of it made me feel… a way (I loved the film DONT get me wrong but I’m still untangling my thoughts and feelings) I don’t know if it was harmful at all but there were times where I felt uncomfy or maybe just very aware of the differences between characters

Does that make sense ? I’m getting too into my head so I would love to hear someone’s perspective (since you’re the only person I’ve seen commenting on it)

There are definitely other people more equipped to answer this than I, but I will do my best. To clarify, I am not a Muslim or an expert on Islamic or Middle-Eastern culture so please feel free to add on with any corrections or other insight.

Basically, Dune (the novel) was published in 1965. There are a LOT of Arabic and Islamic influences in the Fremen culture. A lot of the names were taken from Arabic words, or made to sound Arabic, and the Fremen culture was loosely based off the Bedouin tribes. There are a lot of parallels between the ecological and sociological exploitation of Arrakis and the ongoing exploitation of countries in the Middle East that began in the early 1900's when oil was discovered in Persia (Modern-day Iran). With those parallels in mind, it's easy to see how the novel is critical of exploitation in both the fictional world of Arrakis and our own world as well. I wasn't as worried about these themes being overlooked, and in fact I think the film did a good job bringing in those themes from the beginning when Chani asks "who will our next oppressors be?"

Now. The most noticeable influence from Islam is the theme of jihad, and this is the one I was worried about. From the very beginning of the novel when Paul does the Gom Jabbar test, he becomes aware of this "terrible purpose" that he must fulfill. He has visions and knows that this purpose is inevitable, it is his destiny, and there is no escaping it no matter how hard he will try. This sense of "terrible purpose" follows him all the way until the end of the first section of the book (the book is divided into three mini-books, for those who haven't read it). At the end of this first section, this "terrible purpose" is revealed to be jihad. It's the first time the word jihad is used, and it effectively communicates the dread that Paul feels. Paul doesn't want this, but he knows it is his destiny. There's a crucial interplay between the messianic narrative and the jihadist narrative, but that's a discussion for another post. For the sake of this discussion, it's just important to know that jihad is the word that Herbert uses, and it comes up many times throughout the rest of the novel and the series. Essentially, it's one of the book's most significant themes.

Now, fast-forward to 2020. We're living in a VERY different world than Herbert did, and Islamic culture and religion are seen much more negatively than they were in Herbert's time. (I admittedly don't know much about how Islam and Muslims were perceived during the 1960's, but I'm certain that if it was bad before, it is much worse in the 21st Century). Especially in America, where we live in a post 9/11 context in which one event shaped the way that a lot of our society perceives Islam and Muslims. This perception is predominantly negative. I didn't have any specific examples off the top of my head, but a five-minute google search found this: the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently released a report on the long-term effects of Islamophobia in America over the last 20 years. It gives some insight into how these stigmas have been perpetuated by the government, and it has some statistics and examples of hate crimes against Muslim-Americans. Basically, it's bad.

Now imagine that you're a Hollywood executive, funding and producing a movie based primarily off of Arabic culture with some heavy Islamic themes revolving around jihad - something often associated with 9/11 and used to justify the subsequent War on Terror. How do you market a movie to white-American audiences? Well, if you remember the first trailer for Dune released last September, there's a crucial line that Paul says: "there's a crusade coming."

You might be thinking, "well a crusade and jihad are kinda the same thing, right?" Technically speaking, both are essentially religious warfare. But how do you think Christians would react if we started calling the Crusades the Jihads? It would not be good. And rightfully so, because the concepts emanate from very different cultures with many different connotations and nuances behind them. But the idea of a "crusade" makes the film more marketable to certain audiences still living with biases and tendencies radiating from islamophobia, because a holy war based in Christian principles is more digestible and sympathetic to white-American culture. This article by a professor of Islamic Studies does a really good job explaining how this line goes against the central themes of the book and misrepresents what the "holy war" really is within the context of Dune. It also explains jihad better than I could, and from a better perspective than I could ever give.

Going into the movie, I was very concerned for how they would handle the subject of jihad. Overall, I think they did a good job of alluding to it and creating the sense of dread within Paul as he comes to terms with what's in store for his future. Visually, I think they got the idea of jihad even without saying the actual word. For now, I'm alright with the fact that they didn't explicitly say jihad, but that opinion may change once we see Part 2 (I'm expecting and hoping that Part 2 will be a little more explicit).

What are the differences between the book version of boromir vs the movie?

Where to begin babe! I mean the short answer is they are simply not the same character. If something applies to film-boromir then don't apply it to book-boromir and you'll probably have it right, and vice versa.

Film Boromir's obsessed with Aragorn and his being King? Book Boromir makes one single comment when pressed about how if the King could somehow help them in the war, he'd be welcomed. And he never mentions it again. As for Aragorn himself, Boromir is polite and even amiable with him but really Aragorn has very little impact on him. Brother? Captain? King? Fake words put into film-boromir's mouth, Book Boromir's last words were for his people, to tell Aragorn where Merry and Pippin went, to say he failed. Boromir wasn't frustrated that Aragorn himself was conflicted about going to Minas Tirith or saving 'out people', he was frustrated that the fellowship's decisions were making HIS road home more difficult. He was going to go alone back to Gondor, no matter what Aragorn decided to do, he just didn't care.

Film-Boromir saying his father's rule is failing? Taking Faramir's side in this film-manufactured toxic relationship between him and his father? Boromir and Faramir having an uncomplicated and good relationship where Faramir loves him unconditionally? Absolutely false. Faramir is book-boromir's harshest critic, he cannot put two sentences together about Boromir without making some comment about how reckless or war-loving he was, how he was 'too like the rohirrim' etc. And Boromir supports his father, it's not even in question, it's never even brought up. Of course he does, they've been working together for a decade or more very successfully in the defense of their people.

Film Boromir loudly proclaims 'Gondor will see it done' when he joins the fellowship in this big bravado speech? Boromir in the book doesn't even verbally agree to go with the fellowship. The only thing he's agreed too is to come with them as far as his city, no more, and that agreement is made off camera and told to us by Aragorn at some point. He is literally just trying to get home and that way happens to be the same direction he THINKS the fellowship is going. It's his declared intention the entire way. He JUST needs to go home.

Film Boromir is obsessed with the ring the whole way? Aragorn nearly kills him on Caradhras? Book Boromir asks at the council, calmly, why they dont use it. Elrond answers him and he accepts that answer. He is then completely reliable all the way until Lothlorien. On caradhras he saves them all by insisting on bringing firewood, lighting fires, pulling frodo out of the snow when he collapses and forging a path through the snow for all of them to get down again. It's only after galadriel puts the idea of using the ring in his head that he can't stop thinking about it but that's another post of mine.

Film Boromir is ever loud? Sad? Nervous? Awkward? Absolutely fabricated. Book Boromir never says a single feeling beyond sardonic concern and muted frustration. He is reticent, he is competent, he is confident in his abilities, he is focused on his goals, he is kind and he makes self deprecating and teasing jokes but he is never awkward and the only time he raises his voice is when Gandalf reveals that he doesn't know the way into Moria and the wargs are gaining on them!

Film Boromir makes a SPEECH? About reclaiming Osgiliath for light and music or whatever? Utterly insane firstly, Osgiliath was not reclaimed in an epic triumph just before Boromir left. It was taken entirely by Minas Morgul and Boromir retook the western half, saving Minas Tirith from a siege for that entire year. It was a desperate and pyrrhic victory that left thousands dead and required Boromir to swim the whole damn 3 mile wide river back, who is celebrating this? I hate that scene it robs Gondor of it's desperate struggle so entirely I can hardly breath about it. But also Boromir doesn't care about reclaiming Osgiliath's light and music or whatever! Boromir is interested in people and keeping people alive, history holds no wonder to him. 'Today life is good' no it wasn't! It was an absolutely terrible day! Boromir lost so many friends!

I could actually go on but I have to end here I'm very weak and feeble, the point is Boromir in the books is not the same character as boromir in the films and they simply cannot be melded without major rewrites and fixing the scenarios and relationships that the film made make no sense. Boromir from the books would say and next to none of the things film boromir does, barring that one 'they have a cave troll' line it's the only one that suits him.

2021 is an interesting era of entertainment because it is getting steadily more and more apparent that corporate greed is trying to swallow up good storytelling; movies and shows are made as fast food products to be consumed immediately and thrown away just as fast. there are smarter posts and articles talking about this, but my point here is that marius "believes SO MUCH in art and art's capability to make a difference" von hagen would HATE THIS SO MUCH and, through spite, get into a lot of indie medias that dont necessarily sell. smaller movies, tv shows that got cancelled way before they should have.

oh, hey, MARIUS WAS 12 YEARS OLD IN 2021, yeah he could have watched The Owl House and threw a fucking FIT when disne/y nerfed the show's third season. he has not forgiven and he has not forgotten.

regardless of his age, marius, at some point in his teens watches Vincent and the Doctor (s5 e10 from Doctor Who). for those who dont know this episode, it involves Vincent Van Gogh and a bunch of sci-fi stuff but, at the end, a scene where Van Gogh is taken to the future and shown the impact his art has made on people. please watch it, if you havent it, it's very good and no words can do the experience justice.

I'm so glad you liked Luca! I've been watching some reviews and they all called Luca "something not on Pixar's style" and "not deep" and whatever and I'm like??? Did we watch the same movie? Luca is something fresh and different, and you really feel in an Italian town (or at least I did >>) and aaaaa. Sorry for rambling, Luca is just *chef kiss*

i have SO many things to say about this film!!! to me, it felt like one of pixar's best recent films. i say this because of three things: the stylization/designs, the setting, and the main characters' relationships. and it can all be described in one word: SIMPLE.

i love the style of Luca SO MUCH, because to me they finally found that balance between cartoon proportions and hyper-realistic lighting and textures. Soul looked very good, but the characters didnt seem to belong in their environment at all - the architecture around them was perfectly realistic, but the characters were cartoonish. They were tied together by having super realistic textures, but it still felt a little off. In Luca however, they added a softness and some fun shapes to the environment, and although the lighting is very realistic, all the textures are fairly simplified. Like, one of my biggest pet peeves with 3D animation is how they make these big cartoony eyes and then give them a 30k resolution iris where you can see all the little strand things - but for once, FINALLY, they didnt do that in Luca!! and it makes for a world where you can fully suspend your disbelief and get immersed in the story. even me, who watches movies while constantly looking for things to criticize and dissect (i just think its fun), had barely anything to say about the visuals of this movie. it was just STRONG!! also!! they used that technique where you use a different head rig for the head seen from the side so you can really alter the geometry and make a really appealing mouth shape!! kinda like how it was in the cgi Peanuts movie. when Alberto torns his head sideways and his mouth just goes full pacman to chomp on some pasta i lost it!! i loved it so much!!!

then, the setting. like you said, perfectly recreated a small town in italy, ive never been in one but i immediately recognized and loved it. this entire movie takes place in such a limited number of sets! and i think its GREAT!!! a lot of recent animation movies will take their characters on a journey across so many environments, and while that can be interesting, you never stay in one place long enough to truly appreciate it imo. in Luca, there's less than 10 places that you constantly see: Luca's home, the field with the fish, Alberto's tower, the village square, Giulia's backyard, her kitchen, the little area of ocean by the town, and the hill they bike on. That's it! So you have a chance to be extremely familiar with those places, and how they relate to each other. It's a story that is very well contained and because of this, the environment becomes its own character! I think its a genius move and more animation movies should do it - if only for the fact that making less sets means you can spend more time polishing them. Every environment in this movie just has so much personality!!!

and lastly: the relationships. the main 3 characters are instantly friends, and although it happens quickly, it feels very genuine - and i think thats 100% due to their age. children characters are just the best, man. especially when they feel like real kids, with very defined quirks and personality traits. Alberto is confident, Luca is a dreamer (dont get me started on those daydream sequences ive never seen anything prettier in my whole life), and Giulia is competitive. thats their core and they just elaborate on that without making them too complex, so theres plenty of time to explore what we do know about them and how they relate to each other based on that. and theyre just full of love!!! we love to see it!!!!

i could keep going on for hours but anyway - youre right, Luca is amazing!!! ok maybe the movie isnt #deep like some others Pixar made but it is extremely fun and well made. everyone go watch it!! it has immaculate vibes its so wholesome!!

Why doesn’t Miranda post anything about war in Ukraine like everyone else? She really doesn’t care and this is sucks.

I’m gonna stop you right there, anon. I don’t want to start the same discourse we had when George Floyd was killed, but I suppose it’s unavoidable. I dont know who still needs to hear this, but:

Posting on Instagram does NOT equal activism.

Sharing pictures and videos of war does not confirm or deny an actor’s “goodness.” There’s a word for it: performative activism.

Which isn’t to say everyone who does post about the war is just doing it because it’s what’s expected, or because they feel pressured to… it just means that the vast majority of people weighing in on this tragedy aren’t actually doing anything tangible to help the people who are suffering; they’re just pressing a few keys on their phones, and calling it a day.

Failing to post about an international tragedy doesn’t mean Miranda doesn’t care about it. In all likelihood, it means that the topic is too terrible and too big to reduce down to an Instagram story (which I wish more celebrities thought about before posting, if I’m being honest).

Now, during the George Floyd situation, Miranda was criticized (in my view, somewhat justifiably) for not speaking out right away because Skye P. Marshall specifically and personally called on the cast of CAOS to show their support, and it took Miranda two days after the news broke to do it. Which, in my opinion, only felt like a long time, when in reality, not everyone is plugged into the news 24/7. Miranda explained that she wanted to take her time thinking about what to post before she did. It’s possible that’s what she’s doing here, but it’s also possible she never intends to talk about war on her Instagram, and in my opinion, she would be justified in doing so.

I will also give a personal anecdote if it helps understand Miranda’s silence: After spending days watching a series of videos of protestors being arrested, women SCREAMING that they’re being hurt as they’re dragged away by police, and seeing all the bombs and bloodshed and carnage on the news for so many days in a row, I’ve decided I cannot watch anymore. I have to disconnect from this if I’m going to still be able to function at my job. I fully had a panic attack during work the other day, after watching one of those videos. I can’t afford to be triggered like that at work, so I’m taking steps to avoid the triggers. Which I recognize is a MASSIVE privilege; the people in Ukraine can’t just turn off their tvs and put down their phones to get away from the war. But human beings weren’t meant to be constantly bombarded with every tragedy in the world 24/7. I’m putting my mental health over staying connected. Some might call that selfish or wrong, but it’s what I’ve decided is best for me to do to keep functioning.

I don’t claim to know what’s going on in Miranda’s head, but I do know that she’s probably just traveled from the USA to Adelaide, Australia, and if she’s started filming, she might be spending 16 hours every day on a film set not paying much attention to her phone (and is probably all the healthier for it.) That might sound callous, but it’s how I think a lot of people are feeling right now.

Too much global suffering has happened too quickly and our brains simply can’t handle it all.
