albums i would play for each driver on the 2024 F1 grid to expand their music taste
Max Verstappen: Graceland by Paul Simon - As a fan of classic and folk rock, I'd imagine Max has been exposed to Simon and Garfunkel and I think he'd enjoy the sprawling, detailed, careful expanse of Simon's solo masterpiece. Angels in the architecture spinning in infinity, etc etc
Checo Perez: Ramomex by Rebel'd Punk - One of the Mexican bands who pioneered punk music in the country, but Checo probably missed this release because he was too busy karting and moving to europe as a teen. It's never too late to have a proper angry punk phase, though.
Charles Leclerc: Ten Love Songs by Susanne Sundfør - Groundbreaking, life-altering pop music that pushes every boundary. This hits the sad songs craving and I think would interest him as a musician and burgeoning songwriter.
Carlos Sainz: Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey - daddy issues. I just know he'd vibe out to Brooklyn Baby.
Lando Norris: Destiny by DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ - I dream of sitting him down and exposing him to actually good, interesting, fun contemporary dj music.
Oscar Piastri: Speaking in Tongues by Talking Heads - He has that certain David Byrne swag and demeanor of someone who'd love the Talking Heads if only given the chance.
Fernando Alonso: 10,000 gecs by 100 gecs - At first the old man would be extremely confused but once he was on board he would be blasting The Most Wanted Person In The United States all day every day.
Lance Stroll: Talon of the Hawk by The Front Bottoms - that post that's like the problem is men are making podcasts instead of forming midwest emo bands. but it's men are becoming f1 drivers instead of forming midwest emo bands. I think some TFB exposure could be the spark of inspiration for a great career pivot.
Lewis Hamilton: Maps by billy woods and Kenny Segal - I fear Lewis might have been too worried about Merc's performance last year to have checked out this fantastic collaboration that was one of 2023's best albums.
George Russell: Contra by Vampire Weekend - I just saw Vampire Weekend live following the release of the new album and at the show there was a guy a few feet ahead of me in the merch line who had the exact same energy as GR. The mix of prep vibes and world music would work into his taste while expanding his listening beyond coldplay.
Yuki Tsunoda: GLOW ON by Turnstile - 100% a selfish pick, I want to mosh with Yuki in the pit of a Turnstile pit.
Daniel Ricciardo: The Panhandlers by The Panhandlers - A country supergroup I return to time and again, wistful and nostalgic, making you yearn for West Texas no matter where in the world you are.
Alex Albon: Pelican West by Haircut 100 - Funky British jazz pop, perfect for dancing and vibing.
Logan Sargeant: Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling by Slaughter Beach, Dog - I fear Logie might be too young or too norm core to have had a proper Modern Baseball phase (it's never too late logie! listen to Intersection!) but Ewald's 2023 offering seems like something he missed last year that's perfectly up his alley.
Valtteri Bottas: Merriweather Post Pavillion by Animal Collective - Weird and complex, I think he should throw it on while on a long bike ride and let his mullet fly in the breeze.
Zhou Guanyu: God Save the Animals by Alex G - no you don't understand i need him to listen to Alex G he would love it
Kevin Magnussen: Heaven or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins - Ethereal music he can feel and let wash over him in a wave to relax and transcend the horrors of driving for Haas.
Nico Hulkenberg: Supernatural by Santana - dad music but make it funky and good
Pierre Gasly: Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans by Uffie - A perfect twist on early 2000s French electronic music, I think it'd remind him of the club while sounding entirely new and make him want to pick up a side dj gig of his own.
Esteban Ocon: Lescop by Lescop - French indie pop-rock! His most recent album is fantastic, but Este should check out Lescop's 2013 debut first.

The twink and twunk duo. They're close acquaintances/casual friends at best.
Mini bios and fun notes below the cut:
Tenai is a Jedi Shadow who likes to be left to their own devices and who generally doesn't like people. People generally oblige, since they're not al that likeable anyway. Tenai's good at playing a character though, and so when they have to, they can be sweet a honey and twice as smooth. Maybe it's why they're so unpleasant when they're allowed to be authentic. If one were to make the effort to get to know Tenai and be let into their own little world, one would find an unexpected soft side to them. Tenai is full of pondering phylosophies and odd little quirks that they themself have a hard time explaining. When they were brought out of their Shadow work for the war, they were very displeased, but recognized the importance of all hands on deck- the other Shadows could live without them just fine. Taking command of the 407th Recon Corp was a difficult affair, both for Tenai due to their lack of experience, and for the clones who were met with this rude little gremlin who keeps appearing ominously from dark corners instead of a regal jedi. They made it work though, and the late Marshal Commander Kibo had been too much of a tenacious sweetheart not to befriend. Tenai Tasiko is now one of the Jedi Shadows still helping out with GAR matters. They've grown restless from sitting around during peacetime, which is really quite un-Jedi like. Yes, this bothers them greatly. They've had a number of crisises from it.
Ishan Ri got the job in the GAR intelligence division not really of his own accord. His father was friends of an officer there and a firm believer that working as a librarian was NOT the right career path. Ishan's brief stint as a research/data analyst for his country government looked fine on a resume, and during wartime, you take any hand that you can get, especially if that hand is recommended by someone already working for you. Ishan stayed at the job partly for the pay, but also because he found himself finding a real sense of purpose in it, feeling like they were really helping people by providing intel. It was during his second year as an employee that the war ended. He kept the job to help with the post-war cleanup of slave empires and crime syndicates still operating in Republic space. It's during one of these cleanup missions that he meets Fives, an ARC Lieutenant of the recently founded 501st SOF Unit.
You'd think Tenai would be one of those gatekeeping emo indie music enjoyers, but if asked about what they listen to, they will go on a long explanation about how their chosen favourites are the best and how everyone should listen to them. They're a huge techno fan and a connaisseur of weirdly ethereal rap music. No one who asks Tenai about the type of music that they listen to expects this. If they were in a modern AU they would just wear a hoodie and a cozy sweater everyday no matter the weather. 8 times out of 10 there's a sleeveless turtleneck underneath because those rock. They're not particularly attached to their hair since they have to dye and cut it when doing undercover work that requires it, but they do take care of it as best as they can.
Ishan listens to pretty much any genre. It's just as likely to hear him rock out to agressive punk as it is to see him stare into the distance while Sufjan Stevens plays. Would know a lot of Just Dance choreographies only because Just Dance is fun and was Something To Do at house parties. The type to hyperfixate on singers/bands, do NOT ask him about these unless you're ready to listen for two hours (this is usually how asking Ishan questions goes honestly. The guy can talk if prompted). Very cozy modern librarian type of vibe. Think less messy version of Jon Archivist.

Rasberries & Lemon Delights
Country Boy!Danny x Emo Punk!Duke
Danny[18] goes to live with Aunt Alicia on the family farm for a gap year, which just so happens to be in Smallville. He’s been there since January. A town in the middle of nowhere with at least a nice small population of people, it's not a big jump from small town Amity Park.
Duke[18] doesn’t usually visit the Kents but he had nothing better to do and Damian[16] wanted to go see Jon[15] for the summer, so roadtrip it was. Besides, Duke didn’t have much else to do and Martha & Jonathan had invited him to stay as well. It’ll be fun to just get away from the constant buzz of Gotham.
The Palad Family Farm has a rasberry orchard [it should be spelled this way or like raz(s)berry, not fucking RASPberry I had to fucking look this up, it’s only ever been spelled rasberry in my head, english can go suck my dick [sorry bout that anyways]] with a couple chikens and cow and a produce garden. it’s off to the side compared to the others in Smallville, separated by a line of trees that you might be able to call a forest. Their closest neighbors are the Kents, and that’s through the trees.
For this AU i changed the boys’ appearance a little bit
Duke is less emo-punk and more punk-emo when it comes to his aesthetic
Danny’s bigger in the muscle aspect kinda like a toned down version of Jack
About a week into their stay Danny comes over to the Kent’s to bring over some rasberries as a gift.
The kids just so happen to be hanging out outside when he walks up.
Duke sat lounging on a chair he’d dragged out to the front lawn, reading his book which sat heavy between his cross legs.
Damian and Jon were further into the brush chatting and messing around.
The only thing really odd were the sunglasses the brothers wore, heavily shaded and thick, with the bright Kansas sun and being from one of the gloomiest cities of the world it was practically a necessity.
Jon paused as he spoke and looked down the road, both brothers turned their heads in interest.
A couple meters down the road a young man Duke’s age was walking their way, a straw garden hat on his head, holding a crate in his arms.
The kryptonian smiled and stood up waving at the approaching stranger, “Hey Danny!” he shouted in greeting.
The stranger whose name was evidently named Danny walked up the driveway to the Kent house.
“Hey Jon! Who are your friends?” He said with a smile.
“Damian and Duke, family friends. They’re visiting for the summer.” Jon said happily as he pointed at each sibling.
Damian stood up and walked over to Jon’s side “Nice to meet you” . His voice was as flat as it always was with strangers.
Duke nodded at Danny, “Sup.”
Danny nodded back with a smile, before turning back to Jon, “Me and Aunt Alicia harvested some rasberries yesterday, we got a lot and where wondering if y’all wanted some.”
Jon’s face lit up like a star, “Fuck yeah! Ma’s gonna love ‘em! Come on!”
Jon took Damian’s hand and pulled him back to the house, Damian and Danny following. Duke sighed and decided to go as well, closing his book he stood up and caught up with them. He ended up walking side by side with Danny.
Danny looks down to the shorter boy walking by his side. Duke is gorgeous in an ethereal way, brown eyes almost glowing under his sunnies, winged with perfect black eyeliner. His face was stoic in the same way Damian’s was, little to no emotion shown. It didn’t take away from his serene and chill vibes though.
Duke glances up at Danny, and the taller boy quickly looks away to the Kent house, face flushed.
He almost missed the playful smirk that spread on Duke’s face.
Ma thanks Danny for the raspberry and ropes him into chatting for a bit with the boys adding little commentary and things
Duke’s trying to not be obvious about staring at Danny’s muscles
Dami & Jon notice of course
Jon and Dami glanced at each other as Duke tried to grab their attention, desperately trying to make them stop whatever they were scheming.
“Hey Danny?” Jon says
Danny looks towards the teen, “Yeah?”
“Damian and Duke kinda just got to Smallville and they haven’t even gone all that deep into the fields, – Jon leans in a bit with a wide smile – We could go out tomorrow and us country kids could show them around?”
“I wouldn’t mind that, how ‘bout ‘round after 10?” Danny afford with a smile.
Danny shows them around the area near his family’s farm
Damian and Jon end up scurrying off to let Danny & Duke be alone, of course they’re watching from the sidelines
Duke pretends to be externally calm but is kinda freaking out on the inside his internal monologue is “Hot Boy Hot Boy That was so fucking weird don’t say that again God he’s so fucking funny I kinda wanna kiss him”
Danny is much the same, but he’s not very good at hiding how flustered he is, he’s smiling like a goof and his face is all flushed “Pretty Boy Cute Boy Pretty Goth Boy I have a type Ancients I wanna kiss him”
Duke is not so subtly flirting with Danny, complementing his muscle, being actively interested when Danny talks about the farm and his friends back home
Danny’s also flirting back of course, drifting closer to Duke, asking him about Gotham and his friend, the book he was reading yesterday
When they get to the Palad family farm, Jon and Dami had already gotten there and where drinking some sweet tea with Alicia
Alicia is of course entertained with Danny’s crush, and watches as he and Duke walk around the rasberry orchard
When Jon and the brothers have to go back Duke and Danny trade numbers, even though they’ll probably talk again tomorrow and basically the rest of the summer
They’re both smitten with each other
Duke and Damian are in the attic of the Kent farmhouse, each on their own twin bed on either side of the room
Duke: *yearning sigh*
Dami *teasing*: You like the Palad boy don’t you?
Duke *suspicious*: No ... Whatcha gonna do about it?
Dami: Oh nothing it’s just funny, you always said you wouldn’t fall for someone on the family type list
Duke: What are you- *realization* oh OH! Screw you, you can’t say shit Dames! *chucks pillow at Dami who’s laughing* I see how you look at Jon *teasing*
Dami: Shush! Don’t say that he could hear you!
Duke *smirking* : Or what? not my country boy to worry about
Dami groans and flops into pillow tossing back Duke’s pillow & flipping him off
Duke laughs and lays onto his back, staring up at the ceiling with a smile, before closing his eyes and going to sleep
Danny and Alicia are eating dinner
Alicia: So the Wayne boys, I only really got to talk to Damian, what’s Duke like?
Danny *excited*: Oh he’s so cool! He’s reading this romance novel right now. Sounds really cool, so I might drop by the library to check if they have it!
As Danny talks about Duke, Alicia watches him with a smile
Alicia: When are you gonna go out and see him again?
Danny: Not sure, but I hope sooner or later
Alicia: mmm, If you like so much you better ask him out soon
Danny *high pitched*: What!
Alicia *laughing*: Duke’s the new mysterious pretty boy in town. The other kids your age will be falling over themselves to get to know him
Danny tries not to let himself look stressed, Alicia shakes her head fondly
Alicia: Don’t worry to much kid, Duke already seems to like you, you’ve got a good chance of winning his heart
Danny sighs at his food
Danny: I hope so
I don’t know where I wanna put this but like Alicia has a weird reputation in Smallville
She doesn’t leave her farm very often, only for big events like the Farmers market
And she has most of everything she needs for food at her farm
If she does need to buy something she’ll pop into town at the weirdest of times and leave quickly
When Danny comes around this doesn’t really change, he goes out into town more than her
There were a couple rumors about Ms.Alicia’s nephew staying for awhile
Danny’s been basically the line connecting Alicia and the rest of town
Anyway back to the main plot!
What Alicia said is true, the few other college kids visiting their family in Smallville do want to get closer to Duke
Duke doesn’t really mind, since he’s always kinda been popular, but he insists on staying with Danny at all times
Danny sometimes feels jealous so he often does things to catch Duke’s attention, even though he knows he doesn’t have to do much
When Summer Farmer’s Market time rolls around a bunch of farmers in Smallville drive to the bigger town nearby Dolmeny Town
Alicia & Danny have their own stand selling more rasberry desserts & treats, along with some little carved statues that Danny makes
The Kents also have a stand, selling breads, a few milk products, and flowers pressed and or fresh from Ma’s garden
The stands are like right across from each other as well, both in the food section
Danny & Duke staring at each other from across the street, going over to each other’s stands to buy a few things
Duke complementing the rasberry pastries, and Danny promises to save some for him later
It ends up becoming a a date, they meet up near the end of the day, Duke brings a bouquet he made and Danny brings some rasberry scones
They sit at a bench and just start talking about themselves learning more about each other
Cute stuff like that, by the end of it they’re holding hands when Danny walks Duke back to the Kent’s at the end of the day
I have other date ideas, as well. Maybe there’s a party or concert going on in Dolmeny that Danny found out about and they go there. I think they’d have similar music tastes
Going to a cafe, and talking about their favorite foods
The library, where Duke gets Danny to read some of the romance novels he loves
Duke buying some gotham brand lemon candy for Danny, like the really sour stuff cause Danny mentioned he liked sour stuff
Going to the lake for a beach day with the others
Just hanging out together
Danny fixing Duke’s makeup cause he’s done it for Sam before
Of course I want a scene or part where the rest of the Superfam and Batfam, and the Fentons plus Sam & Tucker of course
Come over to visit their family in Smallville for the summer, like a week or even just a day or two
Jazz, Tuck & Sam meeting Duke for the first time and him & Sam immediately getting along
Conner dragging the kids to a bigger concert than they’ve ever been to before
Batfam mildly hazing Danny because they can
The Fentons being able to play wrestle with the Supers with no real problem cause of liminal bullshit
The three families having a big dinner on the last day with barbecue and such, it’s basically a feast with how many people and food is there
Danny & Duke walk away near the end and go for a walk together
The sun’s set and the sky is filled with stars, as Danny talks on about the constellations and planets the two sit together
Eventually they get to talking about what will happen when the summer's over, Danny’s going to either Caltech or Princeton and Duke will be going back to Gotham U for his second year
Princeton’s in Gotham, so it would keep them closer, but Caltech has the first best Space Science program in the country
Duke doesn’t want to affect such a big decision in Danny’s life, and Danny really wants to go to Caltech
Danny chooses Caltech [Cause he deserves it gosh darnit! and if their relationship doesn’t pan out at least they have a whole country between them]
They end the night with a kiss!

Eddie Munson has always loathed Valentine’s Day.
A skeptic by nature, cynic by choice, and pessimist by way of personal experience, he’s never been one for the red and pink hearts, the teddy bears, the chocolates and flowers. He’s only ever had one Valentine: Greg Portia in the seventh grade. Greg got a handmade card and gimp bracelet he’d made with painstaking care, while Eddie got a silver skull ring from a gumball machine and a hug in the abandoned, poorly trafficked stairwell. A week later though, Eddie found the gimp bracelet left in his locker with a break-up note, ending a relationship Eddie hadn’t even registered as a relationship until it was over. Greg never hugged him again.
It’s not something that Eddie thinks about often, but he does think about the pattern that’s emerged since: short-lived relationships that are over before they even really start, so Valentine’s Day just doesn’t mean anything to him. As far as Eddie’s concerned, Cupid is just another myth weaponized by Hallmark to make a quick buck and he’ll have no part of it, thank you very much.
In fact, the only reason he’s subjecting himself to the horror of the bar's annual Valentine’s Day Emo Night is to avoid witnessing Gareth and Chrissy’s rather excessive displays of affection. Watching Gareth stare aimlessly at the aisles upon aisles of kitschy cards with red envelopes in their local Walmart had been more than enough.
And if he’s honest with himself, maybe he also left for the night to avoid the green monster that curls up in his chest when he’s reminded that love is out there, and it just hasn’t chosen him. But he’s not looking for honesty tonight, just a distraction and a drink or two, so he claims a hightop for himself in the corner of the bar and people-watches.
It’s poor planning on his part, all but a few couples looking either entirely enamored or happily tipsy, and he’s just about to cut his losses and summon an Uber when he sees a man walking towards him. Bathed in the lights that swirl and strobe around the bar, he looks damn near ethereal, a heralding of some kind of… well, Eddie didn’t pay much attention to his Uncle when he talked about the Bible but he’s sure there’s something in there that could’ve described The Man better than his own feeble words could.
A red tee-shirt hugs The Man’s chest in all the best ways, ways that leave little to Eddie’s imagination besides what he’d like to do should the offending shirt disappear, and a black and red plaid fleece hangs over his shoulders. Black jeans cuffed at the ankle and white sneakers cap off the ensemble, and Eddie’s too intrigued by the smile that’s somehow both confident and shy when they make brief eye contact to care that he clearly is very into Valentine’s Day. So understandably, he’s a bit stung when The Man bypasses his table in favor of the bathroom.
Shit, Eddie thinks, sinking back against his chair, not realizing that he’d literally leaned forward to stare like an idiot. He turns back to his phone and scrolls back to Uber. Somehow, in the minute that’s passed since closing the app, all of the prices shoot up and he groans to himself. Insult to injury, Eddie thinks.
The song changes to something less pop-punk and more punk-punk, so he bobs his head up and down as he considers how terrible walking back to his apartment would be. Or maybe there’s another bar nearby? A diner? Maybe I can convince someone to give me a free omelet if I look sad enough–
Eddie’s thought process is cut off by the sound of a chair scraping against the concrete floor, and The Man slowly comes back into focus as he saddles up beside him.
“I couldn’t help but notice you’re sitting over here alone, and that just doesn’t make any sense to me.”

this is gonna be a long post since i absolutely LOVE talking about music. you may take this as a music recommendations post lol. also check my DL playlists out if you want to! 💗
SHU — WITHIN TEMPTATION
let's start with some nice symphonic metal! it's pretty obvious since shu likes classical music. he's relatively calm (maybe too much) but there's a storm inside of him: his double side fits this band a lot imo. moreover, within temptation are powerful but also ethereal, so even though they're "heavy" i think he would give a chance to them :D he would occasionally cover their songs on violin if he feels like it.
REIJI — APOCALYPTICA
staying on the symphonic metal side, we have apocalyptica. this band is so peculiar since it's only formed by three cellos and drums, but i can assure you they're metal lmao. they're neat, polished, elegant and mature: all of these are basic reiji traits! (shu likes them too but he listens to them secretly lol)
AYATO — PARAMORE / HALESTORM
here he comes. my lil punk boi. i think about too many artists when it comes to ayato, cause honestly just every pop punk artist does it for me, but early paramore music gives me HUGE teen emo vibes (both angsty and romantic) that represent ayato so well!! i already stated it in my rocker!ayato headcanons post, but he would blast the RIOT! album at every hour of the day.
regarding halestorm, they represent his "darker" side. they're heavier and more aggressively free-spirited. now tell me if he wouldn't sing Love Bites (So Do I) to yui "jokingly" lol.
KANATO — THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE
how could i NOT associate kanato with the band that basically gave birth to the creepy cute genre, the birthday massacre? their particular goth/industrial sound blending with the vocalist chibi's cute, almost ethereal voice gives so many kanato vibes!! not to mention that the official color of the band is purple lmao. he'd find their album covers very aesthetic, i'm sure of it :D and i also think his fav album would be Violet, the creepiest of them all.
LAITO — LADY GAGA / THE PRETTY RECKLESS
basically laito's two personalities lmao. lady gaga doesn't need any introductions: her provocative and sexy persona shocked everyone and basically all of her songs could potentially be in laito's sex playlist.
the pretty reckless are also indeed sexy, but sexy-depressed??? sexy-angsty?? some of their songs are about embracing one's "dark" side, some others are about dealing with depression (especially in their latest works). i like how they both use the "sexy" façade while actually having more to offer. considering how much laito is broken inside, their music fits so well.
SUBARU — BRING ME THE HORIZON
i'll keep saying this: emo music isn't enough for this guy. this dude listens to metalcore and whatever is heavier than emo pop punk. i actually had issues with picking a band for him cause most of them are casual listens to me but!!! in the end i chose bring me the horizon. angsty emo. pure rage. that's simply subaru for you! sometimes he would sing to their songs in his room but never admit it lol.
RUKI — HIM
honestly, this guy would love gothic rock. i just know it. HIM is the perfect band for him! their dark, elegant, kinda sad sound reminds me of him a lot. and the lyrics too!! they're really poetic, mostly about love and death with a few mentions to eden (pun intended?); the vocalist ville valo often takes inspiration for his lyrics from the books he reads! ruki would definitely dedicate Vampire Heart to yui btw.
KOU — AVRIL LAVIGNE / ICON FOR HIRE
LISTEN. i've been headcanoning this ever since my first DL post ever but kou would be a huge avril lavigne fan. it would mostly represent his frivolous idol persona, but also some of what he hides underneath.
his realest and deepest side is represented by icon for hire. they're heavier, aggressive and talk a lot about sensitive topics. kou has one of the worst pasts among the DL characters and has dealt with pretty much everything going from depression, to abuse, to drug addiction, to suicidal tendencies. i think he'd find some sort of comfort in their songs.
YUMA — P.O.D.
i always pictured yuma as a hip-hop kinda guy, so i think he would like nu metal. being part of the angry and bothered trio with ayato and subaru, he's relatively the calmest one but that means nothing since we're in DL lol. p.o.d.'s passive-aggressive style reminds me of him so much and i swear i ALWAYS think about him when i listen to Youth of the Nation, it's like it talks about him and his brothers specifically.
AZUSA — EVANESCENCE
there are two types of emo: the angry emo and the sad emo. azusa obviously belongs to the second one. i can't really associate him to one genre in particular, it just depends on the ~vibes~, but i chose evanescence for him cause their lowkey eerie, slow style fits azusa a lot. fear of abandonment and selflessness are some of the themes they've covered and Lithium is the song that makes me think about azusa the most.
CARLA — NIGHTWISH
carla has that gothic royal-ish attitude that reminds of the first nightwish era (with tarja turunen as vocalist). i mostly tend to associate the deep, elegant lyrical vocals with carla's deep voice lol. it's just a matter of ~vibes~ again :D
SHIN — FROM FIRST TO LAST
this little shit would only listen to post-hardcore. nothing reminds me of shin more than a cringy "i'm angy >:(" music genre. i actually do enjoy some post-hardcore and from first to last is the exception. i think shin would fit especially in the Dead Trees era, aka FFTL's villain arc™: very silly, angsty and full of villanous vibes but more mature than their previous works.
KINO — AMARANTHE
gamer boi coming through with electronic metal!! amaranthe's futuristic mix of edm and metal + their in-your-face attitude is a perfect match with kino. PvP is THE kino song. the music, the lyrics, the game concept just suit him so well!! slay.

➼ Izana’s favorite music normally falls under the indie and rock umbrellas. He’s partial to 80s-90s rock and alternative rock but enjoys some modern indie artists from time to time. I see that he canonically listens to Queen (though I’m not sure if he does love the band or just one song), so there’s that. Other artists he might listen to are The Rolling Stones, Muse, The Strokes, Aerosmith, The Smashing Pumpkins, Arctic Monkeys (insists he likes their pre-AM music, would make a face if you tell him your favorite Arctic Monkeys song is “Do I Wanna Know”) ... and Mitski..... (you know why)

➼ Somewhat your mom/dad’s music taste. Probably one of those people who say older music’s better than new music. He’s a New Wave guy. Likes a lot of 70s-80s pop hits; some funk, soul, and disco music; with some alt indie bands sprinkled in. He’s fond of shoegaze because of its floaty and ethereal sound which makes him feel nostalgic and at peace. He also appreciates mesmerizing vocals and orchestral instrumentals, so I think he’d like Florence and Lana if he heard them.
➼ Artists he would probably like: ABBA, Prince, The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Lady Gaga (I think she was big in Japan + her songs probably played a lot in clubs + she was always doing something shocking and Ran liked that)

➼ He’s into R&B, soul, 90s rap like Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, and Ice Cube. That’s what you’d usually hear playing in his room while he’s chilling. He’d listen to DJs too, of course, but maybe to the more underrated ones. (I don’t know that many DJs so I’m not giving names) He shares Ran’s taste for Prince. As for some newer artists, I think he’d like Joji and Childish Gambino.
➼ Likes EDM but frowns upon the EDM of the early 2010s. He has pretty strong feelings about it. Never play The Chainsmokers in his presence or die.
➼ His and Ran’s music tastes overlap when it comes to indie/alternative artists. Both brothers act like snobs over it. Rindo actually buys and collects records (as you can see, he has a CD and DVD shelf in his room), searching for rare versions of his favorites and everything.

He could never get into chill R&B though, and most pop songs are either too “happy” or too “sappy” for him and he just wants something that screams in rage most of the time.

➼ The type of guy to have a Taylor Swift (he likes Back to December) or Britney Spears CD hidden somewhere in his room. Also got into One Direction at one point. If anyone asks, he’ll says it’s his girl’s or mom’s.

He enjoys the “classy” feel of most of these songs and the way these singers sing. His favorite genres are funk, soul, R&B, and some oldies pop.
➼ You rarely hear music playing in his house. But if you do, it might be Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bee Gees, The Carpenters, or Simon & Garfunkel.
➼ And as for some more modern artists: Coldplay, Hozier, and Silk Sonic. Would enjoy Lana del Rey’s style too, especially her Ultraviolence songs.

➼ Kaku doesn’t “stan” artists. If you ask him who his favorite artist is, you would not get an answer. He’ll listen to anything that sounds good to him no matter what people think of it.

Holly is the perfect prefect. The golden child. She would kill herself if she got 98% on a test. But then she burnt out. She was leftover. She pushes and pushes herself harder and harder- she falls lower and lower.
Honey noticed this and tries to help, but Holly's aggressive, like a homeless, scarred puppy. She eventually caves after her all out low in the dumpster. Honey protected her, encouraged her, everything- to try and help her, trying to help someone who tried and failed as someone who tried to never try at anything.
Berry also took pity on her and helped too (mainly with terrible jokes which holly usually appreciated) {he's just. a fun little guy. a. a little guy. leave me alone.}
Holly eventually became a warrior maybe around the time Jay became a medicine cat (because she failed a couple assessments)

UNDER THE RADAR: AUGUST 2023
Happy Labour Day, Canada! There’s plenty summer left to enjoy our August Under The Radar picks from Isobel feat. Chris Clute, Rosemary Ginger, Tiger Really, Noble Oak, Frantic and Mikenna Hope, and Clara Cloud and Jeremy Lim.
1) Isobel featuring Chris Clute - “Good Guy”
There’s something so tender about the title track of Isobel’s debut album and her extension of the olive branch; I feel empathetic towards her. It’s one for the people pleasers who give too much, but receive little in return and whose efforts are for naught. Adaptability to suit others’ needs (and wants) comes at a personal cost—a loss of identity and oneself. You can hear a genuine care in her voice, leading with grace when her actions are not reciprocated.
It’s a surprising listen because Isobel also has the capability to be bold and rightfully bitter, but “Good Guy” revels in her maturity and understanding of putting herself first (“No ill intent, but I had to protect myself / Saying sorry, but I don’t know for what now / Being human, that’s all I wanna be now”). A collaboration with Chris Clute on guitar, the song is nuanced and gentle in how she reasons with herself and recognizes the scars left behind. The layered acoustic guitars create intimacy and also propel it forward. Isobel’s tone meshes perfectly with the guitars and subtle production, it comes off very natural and unforced.
“Good Guy” lives up to its name in hoping for resolve, even when it’s not warranted.

2) Rosemary Ginger - “Ocean in Between”
“While we’re apart you’ll vanish like stardust.”
Written by vocalist/keyboardist Adam Doucette while he was living abroad in Barcelona, “Ocean in Between” depicts the unease that time and distance can spur in close relationships. Its surf-pop guitar tones and swelling pianos complement the waters and cosmos referenced throughout the lyrics; a shimmer to a vastly negative, self-fulfilling prophecy. It builds in energy and anxiety until downcast, distortion-heavy chords replace Doucette’s vocals. Amy Tan provides the wistful harmonies and wailing punk release I didn’t expect, but wholeheartedly needed. “Ocean in Between” is indicative of the band’s immersive musicianship and songwriting. It is beachy but bittersweet, feeling future heartache in the now.

3) Tiger Really - “Dead Ringer”
"Dead Ringer” takes the ‘right person wrong time’ trope and provides a math rock accompaniment for those ill-fated, longing souls. Talks of antics and lingering feelings amidst a timeline that isn’t in our favour, the title calls to their visual inspiration of a person finding their soulmate—dying before they’re able to confess their love, and remaining in the veil in-between unable to move on. The regret and disappointment is masked by their intense sound; guitar lines that scream Midwest emo and classic jazz progressions, a breath of fresh air. It has a devil may care attitude while being cultured and calculated in matching their lyrics and tone. The purgatory hurts the most, unable to fully rid oneself of those desperate, fleeting moments.
The band is fronted by Chinese-Canadian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lian Shao, and has been making music together since 2020. I really like the bite and charisma that Tiger Really has shown, and it’s no doubt their debut album Swan Sting (out this October) is much anticipated.

4) Noble Oak - “Let It Out”
With enough wanderlust to span today’s travel itineraries while feeling nostalgic for summers past, “Let It Out” is serenely spirited. The project of Vancouver’s Patrick Fiore, Noble Oak is immersive and perceptive in presentation; he’s very visual in storytelling. Inspired by the “spontaneity and recklessness” of his 2019 summer and the release at season’s end, the song beckons an unbridled freedom mixed with hesitation and longing. It has ethereal qualities with acoustic guitar and layered synths, but also embraces the crisp electronic beats and overall mellow ambiance. I was very impressed with the composition – how his voice gently oscillates in the repetition of the song’s title, and in the transitional dialogue it mirrors in sound (“And of those places you go when you’re sleeping / Do they show you a way to keep dreaming?”).

5) Frantic feat. Mikenna Hope & Safe Trip - “You’ll See”
“You’ll See” is a powerful spoken word/hip-hop collaboration between Okanagan artists Frantic (Travis Andrews), Mikenna Hope, and producer Safe Trip. An ode to self-love in spite of the doubts, fears, and hardships perceived by oneself and others. I liked the alternating rap verse, RnB chorus. Cavernous beats and crisp clicks mingle with gentle strings and piano. Mikenna and Travis are both passionate performers and extremely talented at wordplay, with the latter often weaving mystical forest imagery into his narrative. That said, lines like “I am enough and I am here” are just as, if not more impactful. “You’ll See” reminds listeners that healing is a journey. Bare and ever-evolving, the sky never looked so clear.

6) Clara Cloud and Jeremy Lim - “Ocean Lullaby”
Does mermaidcore exist? If so, “Ocean Lullaby” is a perfect anthem. It’s eerie and dreamlike as it lures listeners toward the dark side – you’re almost there, and it’s oh so enticing (“Your song can blur the lines between the sea and land”). Inspired by the mythology of sirens and the compelling nature of toxic relationships, the song has the right amount of electric wonder. Clara Cloud’s (Clara MacLeod) voice is mystifying; a spellbinding effect with her sweet tone whilst drawing closer to the proverbial edge. The beats are pulsing and sharp, like water rippling as it interacts with an outside source. Composer/producer Lim offers a vivid soundscape, interspersed with the mimicking of siren calls and pacing that follows the temptation.
In their debut music collaboration, the pair has the hypnotic factor—sinking into the depths of our desires to be saved, loved, or to face the great unknown.

Existential Magazine’s August Music Roundup
With the month coming to a close, we’re sharing just a handful of our favourite new releases we’ve discovered this July! Sit back, put on our New Music Friday playlist and spend a few minutes enjoying fresh new tunes hand-picked by us.
Jethro Coups - ‘Hey You’
London based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jethro Coups gracefully leads us into our Roundup for the month, debuting his first ever single ‘Hey You’, a dreamy haze of acoustics, indie and alt-rock stylings blended into one wistfully ethereal cloud. Soaring in with gorgeously bright plucked acoustic guitar strings and a mystical, subtle synth fade, ‘Hey You’ immediately feels enclasped within a warm but tender bedding of sound, like the familiarity of a close friend beside you comforting through your darker moments. This looping acoustic guitar riff weaves its way through the building layers of sound, wrapped between rising synth glows and occasional vibrant pops before the second verse shifts into more instrumental additions. A steady beat pushes things along lightly whilst violin-esque strings join into the mix, later seeing the addition of an emphatic electric guitar riff for the bridge’s intermission. With a sound that’s constantly ebbing and flowing in a way that almost feels alive in its shifting streams, ‘Hey You’ is graced by the clean but emotionally-rich vocals of Jethro atop it all, hauntingly cascading through an agile range that complements the track’s rising and falling sonics. A poignant message only makes this touching track all the more lingering as Jethro tells the story of an personal, semi-lucid conversation had with a loved one at the end of their life, taking inspiration from his own grief. Between lines like ‘I’m still here, you’ve been gone for far too long, I thought you’d disappeared’, it’s impossible not to feel the aching resonance carried all the way through, whilst Jethro also tries to find some peace in continuing to live after those he’s loved have been taken away. Graceful in its sound and message, ‘Hey You’ glimmers out like a hopeful serenade sung to someone in their final moments, stripping them of their fear and giving them visions of serenity whilst in a way allowing the same to those who must live on without them.
Love Ghost & Dan García - ‘Glock’
Collaborating with the Mexican rapper Dan García, the well-known emo and pop-punk blend duo Love Ghost have just released their latest heavy-hitting new single ‘Glock’ that packs a punch - literally. Embracing gritty electric guitar strums and dominant, constantly consuming electronic beats, ‘Glock’ carries a lot of attitude in both its emo-rap vocal flow and vigorous instrumentals. With Dan García offering a raspy hip-hop-esque delivery atop this harsh sound while Love Ghost shift into more hoarse whispers and light screamo, ‘Glock’ is a track you’ll be completely infectiously hooked on through every twist and turn. Lyrically, ‘Glock’ is in one half written in Latin for Dan García’s harder trap segments, and shifts into more of an English emo rap styling for Love Ghost’s second half interruption. Inspired by both artist's love for competitive fighting, the lyricism speaks of unleashing your inner beast and embracing the person you try to keep within a cage, singing ‘the freak inside the cage, succumbs to all his rage.’ Unashamed and carrying a lot of pent-up aggression, ‘Glock’ is here to offer you that outburst we all need every so often, pulling you into it’s controlling soundscape and gripping you tightly with its bloody fists. Garnering similarities to that of MGK and CORPSE’s ‘DAYWALKER!’ amidst other acts like Scarlxrd and Ghostemane, ‘Glock’ is a highly addictive two minute slice of volatile energy, angsty tones and lyrics you can’t help but mouth along to regardless of whether it’s your first listen or your fiftieth.
Live in Color - ‘Yes To Me’
The Swedish pop-rock band Live in Colour have been gracing the music scene since 2018, continually combining emphatic pop hooks with the energy and velocity of rock, and their newest single ‘Yes To Me’ is the perfect introduction to what they have to offer. Fizzling in with a synth-beat pulsation and deep bass twangs, the instrumentals unite for an almost retro disco edge that immediately gets you ready to groove along, appreciating the vibrant energy seeping out the track’s three and a half minutes of euphoric tones. Soon accompanied by drum beats, bright keys and progressively growing synth undertones, ‘Yes To Me’ is an experience that finds itself the longer it plays out, building confidence not just in its instruments but also its message. The chorus explodes into a firework-esque explosion, with each instrumental reaching their dominant peak and shimmering into the most mesmerising entanglement together for a true burst of colour. In its clashing drums, backing vocals, synth pops and keyboard riffs, ‘Yes To Me’ falls into place, all the while their vocalist dances atop the soundscape with the perfect amount of clean charisma and self-assured repertoire. With a poignant message buried within its positive tones, Live in Color sing of choosing yourself even when it’s hard, letting go of someone no longer serving you despite harbouring a deep amount of love for them and moving forward alone for your own growth and benefit: ‘the hardest thing I’ve ever done is saying no to you… the hardest thing that I ever did is saying yes to me.’ Reminiscent of acts like Walk The Moon and Coldplay, Live in Color are here to keep breaking down genre expectations and deliver something utterly unique and completely inspiring, and we’re certain ‘Yes To Me’ achieved that and more.
Katie Belle - ‘Symptoms’
Katie Belle, the talented up-coming pop artist from Georgia, has been taking the music scene by storm since she entered, now bearing her newest edgy hit ‘Symptoms’ that’s utterly mesmerising. Wrapped between looping acoustic guitar strums and a half-clapped, half-thudding beat, ‘Symptoms’ immediately soars with an unrelenting groove you’re completely compelled to dance along with. A synth haze soon flows into the soundscape, adding an atmospheric air to the track’s infectious feel, all before the choruses’ deliciously sweet hooks ring out. As a funky bassline adds a new level of swagger to the song’s attitude while the beats grow more prominent and in-your-face, this dominant interlude really takes the reigns, urging you sing along loud even when you’re still learning the words. Katie’s airy but confident vocal delivery is the cherry on top, with a breathy verse adding allure before the choruses’ more self-assured, sultry lines exert an extra layer of dominance, together intertwining with the sound for a journey you’ll hardly be able to tear yourself away from. Singing of a passionate relationship filled with heat and tension as well as an almost toxic cyclical nature and addiction, ‘Symptoms’ captures that overpowering kind of love you just can’t get enough of, getting withdrawals from being apart. Settling into just the steady beat and intermittent guitar plucks for the verse, an intimate feel somewhat takes over, slowly building back up with an ever ebbing and flowing sound of delicacy and intricacy. The chorus re-introduces backing synth flourishes while an evolving electric guitar riff dazedly plays out, sung over by the lightly subdued vocals of Plant Dad, a hazy and airy indie and lo-fi laced delivery. Grazing through a dainty higher range and falling back to occasional melancholic lows, the way Plant Dad sings is completely mesmerising, a beautiful serenade that feels directed personally towards you while you listen along. Chasing Shadows - ‘Emily’
Since their 2016 musical debut, the up-coming quartet known as Chasing Shadows have been gracing the music scene with addictive tracks worthy of being played loud and on repeat, and their newest single ‘Emily’ is no exception. Channelling a broad mix of indie-rock and pop-punk textures, ‘Emily’ soars from the get-go with an infectiously bright but rocky sound perfect for dancing away late summer nights. As vibrant thudding drum beats and emphatic but rough electric guitar strums lead things in, the soundscape of ‘Emily’ is right away completely mesmerising, carving out a sound that’s easy to listen to but stylistically creative. the ghost tapes - ‘ballad for the twenty something’
The Northern-island based duo the ghost tapes have just two songs within their discography: their debut release ‘barely holding on’ shared last year, and their new offering ‘ballad for the twenty something.’ Taking their time to carefully curate and pen their releases, this new single is one stemming from personal experience and a sound clearly perfected to the tee. Initially led in by acoustic guitar strums and a soft electric guitar riff left to ring out, ‘ballad for the twenty something’ shines as something raw and real when it first commences, stripped-back to place almost the entirety of focus on their vocalist’s delicately sung lines. As he carefully weaves between the intimate sounds and displays an almost pop-punk-esque whine in his emotionally delivered lines, it’s hard not to be mesmerised by every word. Soft backing vocals add a haunting edge to the chorus, laying down a tranquil bedding to rest within, but it’s not long before this perfect image comes crashing down as gritty electric guitar strums and striking drum beats take over the new verse. The song becomes much more dominant and empowered within this shift, and it’s not long before a guitar riff adds an additional emphatic flair to their ever-growing sound. Merging opening soft-rock with clashing alt-rock that only becomes more industrial and fuzzy the longer the track plays out, the ghost tapes are here to not just give you a song to enjoy but an entire whirlwind of a journey to follow through with. Goldthrone - ‘Scale It Down’
The second single ever ‘Scale It Down’ from Australia-based alternative-rockers Goldthrone closes out our Roundup for the month, displaying a ferocious hard-rock edge with alternative-rock angst. Led in by a slow and intimate guitar riff, ‘Scale It Down’ almost feels eerily and unexpectedly soft, but it’s not long before this tranquil intro is cut short and replaced with a heavy wall of sound. Opening with a chorus that bears thundering drums, gritty electric guitar strums and hoarse vocals, ‘Scale It Down’ right-away seeks to set its anthemic tone, pulling you right into its harsh soundscape from the get-go. The verse simmers down slightly, revolving around a looping electric guitar riff and more sombre steady drum beats, allowing their vocalist’s emotional richness to shine through in every raspy word sung. A pre-chorus takes even more of a step back, with haunting vocals over just guitar strums ringing out into the vast open soundscape, infusing moments of delicate personal resonance with a constant explosion of rock-y tenacity. random extra wavernot4love lore: i grew up going 2 shows & fests like warped in the mid 2010s scene, starting when i was 13 (sup, monumentour darien). sws, ptv, mcr, & fob were the first bands i ever really loved. i grew up on a LOT of 2010s pop punk , but over the past year & a half or so have been diving into the 2000s scene, especially in terms of post hardcore, much deeper than i had before!

I Won’t Let Go (or Run Away)

Nari won’t fight Skrael alone. Douxie won’t let it happen.
Based on this post by @archies-litterbox . I have never watched Pacific Rim and don’t know what drift compatibility is, but the idea of Douxie co-piloting Nari’s titan Vibes With Me.

“No. You have a titan.”
Nari’s eyes started to glow, and her titan rumbled up.
She looked so… ethereal. And terrifying. And… a little bit sad. A titan fighting for them, a titan fighting against them—either way, she was alone.
So when Claire opened the shadow portal for them to get off the titan, Douxie didn’t go through it.
“Hey, c’mon! I can’t keep this open, I’ll need all of my magic for the titan’s portal.”
Douxie shook his head. “I’m not going to leave her alone again. I promised I would protect her.”
“Douxie,” Nari murmured, “You cannot share this with me. It is my burden.”
Douxie took Nari’s hand once more. “No more running, Nari. This is my fight, too. You are my fight.”
The world lit up, and he was huge, he was powerful, he could crush forests with his steps and destroy anyone who got in his way. Douxie let out an exhilarated laugh, lifting one arm and watching it crack stone with the force it came down with. He was unstoppable, he had the power of raw, untamed magic at his disposal and he was a god!
Nari’s hand in his anchored him to himself, reminded him who he was. Douxie. Punk-Rocker. Customer Service Expert. A master wizard. Certainly not a god.
Claire’s shadow portal surrounded them, transferring them to a forest. Nari leaned forward, and Douxie followed her lead. The titan ran forward at full tilt towards Skrael.
What if…
Douxie used his magic to light his regular hand on fire.
The titan fist he swung towards Skrael’s titan was wreathed in blue flame.
Skrael howled, whirling around to face them. “What—Impossible! You cannot pilot a titan!”
“Not alone!” Douxie responded.
Nari’s hand squeezed his, and she brought their other fist careening towards Skrael. The ice titan dodged, but barely.
“You cannot contain such power,” the ice demigod taunted, “It will consume you, and spit you out!”
“I won’t let it!” Nari howled. Vines shot out, reaching towards Skrael. With a thought from Douxie, they glowed blue and sent off a sleeping spell that made Skrael’s titan sway on its feet. Another punch from Douxie’s fiery fist sent the ice titan reeling.
Maybe Skrael was right about this consuming him—the scale of magic it took for the whole titan hand to light was exhausting, and Douxie could feel himself starting to fail.
A blow from Skrael sent them skidding to the side, and Douxie’s hand slipped out of Nari’s, instantly severing his connection to the titan. He fell, tumbling off of the titan towards the distant ground.
Falling.
Again.
“Douxie!”
Nari lunged out of her titan’s control sphere, holding onto a vine with one hand and grasping Douxie’s hand with the other. A vine snaked out, lashing their wrists together.
“Don’t leave me,” Nari begged.
Douxie gave her hand a squeeze. “No more running,” he murmured weakly, “I’ve got this—I can do it.”
The vine in Nari’s other hand retracted back into the titan, pulling the two of them up. They resumed control just in time to scramble out of the way as Skrael charged towards them. They whirled around, and Douxie lit his hand on fire, ignoring the wave of dizziness that swept over him. They slammed the fiery fist into Skrael again, knocking him back into the mountain. Nari’s vines stretched out again, and again Douxie set off another sleeping spell. Almost—there—
And then, all at once, there was blinding, horrible pain in his side, a freezing, stabbing sensation that seemed to freeze the blood in Douxie’s veins. He and Nari screamed in unison, their voices blending together into a harmony of agony.
Through the blizzard of pain, Douxie saw Nari raise their hand and stab Skrael back.
And then they were falling away, still connected by the vine at their wrists.
And by their hands, clutching each other.

Claire screamed as the titan fell, running forward, stumbling over rocks and roots, but making her way to the fallen titan. Skrael was gone, reduced to dust, and she staggered over the pilot’s area of the earth titan. Douxie and Nari were still there, a barely-conscious Nari cradling a passed-out Douxie in her lap, their hands still linked and a vine wrapped around their wrists. Ice was spreading up their bodies from their sides, and their breaths were visible, little clouds in what was otherwise warm air. Claire skidded down next to them, checking Douxie for a pulse. It was there, but barely—and it was getting slower.
“Nari, you have to let go!” Claire begged, “You have to let him go—he’s dying!”
Nari shivered violently. “D-dy—”
The vine slowly retracted, and she started to pull her hand out of his.
Douxie’s hand clenched harder, and his eyes opened just a fraction. “N-no m-more r-r-running,” he chattered.
Claire felt Jim’s hand on her shoulder, but she was more focused on the wizard in front of her. “Douxie, please—”
“Sh-sharing the curse,” he murmured, his eyes unfocused, glowing slightly. Pulses of blue magic were rippling over his skin and spreading to Nari, slowing the ice down, only for a second, but each pulse prevented the ice from killing him just a moment longer. “S-stronger to-together. Camelot.”
“I can’t get you there, Douxie, I’m spent, that titan portal took too much—please, Douxie, I can’t lose you!”
He reached out with one hand and brushed Claire’s face. “Magic i-is emo-emotion. Use—use your fear. It—it doesn’t control you—you c-cont-trol it.”
Claire gripped his hand. “Come on,” she howled at the air, “I’m not going to lose him! ONE! MORE! PORTAL!”
It flickered, small, unstable. Shadows pressed at the corners of Claire’s vision, whispering and tugging at her soul, and she pushed them away.
“YOU! OBEY! ME!” she screamed, and the portal opened, swallowing them up and dropping them on the floor of Arthur’s throne room.

Douxie staggered to his feet, pulling Nari along with him. He stumbled to the table with the gems in it, overshooting and spilling to the floor.
“Hngh—no—"
Blackness pressed at the corners of his vision—he was using so much magic, had used too much to fight Skrael and now it was all he could do to keep Nari and himself alive—but he summoned his staff, using it to haul himself up. “The gems,” he gasped, “They—” He scrabbled for one, prying at it with his fingers, but he was shivering so hard he couldn’t get a good grip. “Claire! Grab that yellow one!”
Claire pulled out a pocket knife and pulled it out. Douxie grabbed it, hobbling to Merlin’s study.
“What’s going on?!” Claire demanded.
“It’s—the gem—different gems hold—power—”
“Like the triumvirate stones?”
“Yeah—this one—fire—” Douxie grabbed a hammer, and handed a chisel to Nari. “Right—right there.” She held the chisel in place, and he slammed the hammer down on the gem.
Too hard, too hard, Merlin’s voice chided in his head, to shape a gemstone, you must be gentle, but firm.
But he didn’t have time to be gentle—he hit the gemstone again, and a surge of power flooded out, filling his veins with fire. It joined his own magic, and he and Nari floated up.
“Nari, now!”
He didn’t know how he knew she could save them—he just knew, the titan bond still joining them. He just felt it, deep in his soul, that their magics combined could stop the spread of Skrael’s curse.
Nari was chanting something in a language he didn’t know—or maybe he just couldn’t figure it out because everything was getting fuzzy, and now Nari’s magic was the only thing keeping him up. Her magic pulled on his own, and the power of the gemstone. They were surrounded by a maelstrom of flowers and vines made of dancing blue flames.
And then they were collapsing to the floor. He still felt cold, but the deadly ice no longer crept through him.
Nari pressed her forehead to his. “Share the curse, share the burden,” she murmured, “Thank you, Douxie.” She got up. “Bellroc still remains, and they will remake the world in fire. My task is not finished yet.”
Douxie grasped for her hand. “No!” he protested weakly, “We barely managed to defeat Skrael—you can’t—”
She giggled, holding out a hand. A flower made of ice formed. “I survived. I have assumed Skrael’s powers. I think—I think it will be enough. Not as good as you and I, but… enough. You cannot accompany me this time, Douxie. Stay here and rest. You are not a demigod—even together, piloting the titan cost you too much power. You cannot fight in this shape.”
Her face kept flickering in and out of focus, but Douxie clutched her hand as tightly as he could. “You can’t go—I have to go with you!”
Nari held up their linked wrists. The vine dissolved into green and blue magic, making a glowing, connecting thread that faded out of sight. “You do not have to be close to be with me, Douxie. We are linked like the moon and the tides—even separated by the expanse of space, they still know each other, are still affected by each other. You will be with me. Now rest.”
She tapped his forehead with one finger, and the world went black.
Xxx
“Shhhhhh, Steve, be quieter, you’ll wake him up!”
“He’s been asleep for ages, just wake him up already!”
“We told you, piloting the titan took a lot out of him. Regular wizards just aren’t built for it, and besides, he used a lot of magic in the fight—let him sleep.”
Douxie yawned, stretching. “Morning,” he mumbled. Everything was sore—and his whole body felt weak—but fuzzbuckets, he hadn’t gotten this much rest in, well, ever.
He tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over him, and he lay back down.
His friends all crowded around his bed. Jim was clutching Excalibur in his hands, and Douxie gestured to it. “Hey! You did it!”
Jim nodded, beaming. “We weren’t sure we could do it—I figured out what the ninth configuration was, but we needed you.”
“Me?”
“Yeah! And we were thinking ‘well, that’s it then, unless Claire teleports his unconscious body over here’ and then this—this glowing blue ball of light appeared, and it split into eight pieces and hit each of us, and then we… I don’t know, it just felt sort of… comforting? And hopeful? And then the eight of us were able to pull out Excalibur. I think… maybe you unconsciously sent out some magic?”
Claire gave him a warm smile. “You knew when we needed you. And you pulled through.”
A bolt of panic shot over Douxie, and he sat upright, ignoring the fatigue. “Nari! Where’s Nari?!”
“She’s fine,” Jim promised, “She was amazing—she fought Bellroc’s titan and got it down so we could face Bellroc, and then Toby used the anti-magic ray, and we… we finished the fight. Together.” He chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. “Even with their titan out, Bellroc put up a heck of a fight—it took all of us to finally take them down.”
“And—where’s Toby?”
“He’s okay, too. A few broken bones—he got pinned under rubble from the titan. But Nari got out of her titan and to him in enough time to save him. Guess what?! She found Strickler, too! He fell from the explosion and went under the ice! It froze him and sent him into a kind of hibernation, but she pulled him out. She’s resting now. Two titan fights in a row plus healing Toby and finding Strickler really took it out of her.”
“She grew a whole garden in the courtyard,” Aja breathed, “It’s beautiful—I wonder if she could make one for me back on Akaridion 5?”
“But after she wakes up, she’s going to use her empathy magic to find coordinates for Archie,” Krel volunteered, “And then we’ll just wormhole in!”
“And… the Chronosphere?”
Blinky gave a short nod. “In Camelot’s vault. Saving it for a rainy day. We saw the ninth configuration in it, and Claire managed to see and prevent Bellroc from stabbing Jim, so I suppose it served its purpose. Meddling with the powers of time is a dangerous endeavor.
Douxie nodded. “I know that one for sure.”
The powers of time moved on their own, in one direction. Forward. They managed to open a wormhole to the Hong Kong trollmarket, so Archie and Charlemagne could come and go as they pleased. Mrs. Lake became Mrs. Strickler-Lake. Jim refused to change his name.
Douxie still felt stabbing icicles in the night sometimes, waking him up from the pain.
Winter always filled him with dread.
And he almost always felt cold.
But Nari would always come—every time he started feeling just a little too frozen, every time he jolted up in the night, she was there.
And other times, he could sense her feeling the same, and he would be there for her. They shared the same curse, the same chill in their bones.
But they also shared the same fire. The same determination.
And that was enough.

I'm always in the mood for write about Warren, also I didn't knew how to out 34 on this but well...I hope that's not a problem
I know Warren is a tough, punk guy but DUDE I love writing about his soft side 😫
The dim light fell on Warren's features almost perfectly, his pale skin looked smooth and the golden locks falling down on his forehead made him appear like a sort of ethereal creature. A fallen angel who has lost it's purpose and been forbidden to go bck to heaven.
He used to call himself that way when the alcohol made his poetic side come out. There always was bitterness taste in those words, Warren always tried to skip your gaze by nuzzling his face on the crook of your shoulder and kiss on the soft skin of your neck.
Warren surely was an angel, a beautiful one who was too broken to realize his greatness.
"You good, baby?" Warren smiled sadly at the feeling of a soft kiss on his bare shoulder. It has been so long since you two abandoned that party, but he couldn't take anymore being in a crowd.
For a big guy like him, being afraid of being around too many people was nothing but pathetic. That was Warren's way of seeing things, he hoped you didn't mind that much being stuck with a joke like him.
"Kinda," Warren mumbled in your chest, not daring to look up since that smell of your cologne was oddly comforting.
Among the sound of music and people chatting, your humming was enough to make this scene feel far away from the party going on downstairs. It was mesmerizing how always when you were together the outside world seemed to put itself in second place, allowing you to enjoy yourselves at the fullest.
This made Warren feel safe, something quite weird looking at his past. Nobody has made him feel this way before...he didn't even knew what to do but he was grateful.
"You don't wanne go back, do you?" you trembled your fingers against the old, cracked leather of his jacket, letting them roam free and caress those fluffy feathers in the base of Warren's wings.
Warren finally looked up to you, those tired blue eyes meeting yours. He was pouting, clearly not content with the idea of going back to the party." I don't want to go" he simply said. " why, do you want to?"
You tilted your head, thinking about it for a few seconds before grimacing." Nah, I prefer to stay with you, bird boy."
Warren grinned softly, a dim blush covered his cheek, but before you were able to see it he went back to rest his head on your chest. "Cool..."

bad kids playlists breakdown
thanks for all the love on my bad kids playlists! at the request of people here’s some of my thought process behind each of the songs/artists on their playlists :)
these playlists are mostly made up of songs i think they would enjoy listening to, but there are also some that i personally associate with them :)
fig’s playlist needed to be mostly, if not all, female-fronted bands and artists bc she is 1000% a very active voice for supporting women in rock. paramore is personally one of my favorite bands of all time and their earlier stuff really strikes me as fig’s taste. mitski is an incredible artist and i KNOW fig would be obsessed with her. i threw a bunch of queen songs in there bc they’re incredible and i believe fig would take after their dramatics a lot in her own performance. chase petra is a small band from california that i found on tiktok and became obsessed with ever since. their music is incredible and is exactly what i think fig and the sig figs would sound like. taylor swift is on there bc she slaps and i refuse to accept that fig wouldn’t know every word to all of her songs, especially from her cheerleading songs.
similarly to fig, i wanted fabian to have primarily black artists on his playlist in honor of lou’s mantra of always playling black characters in dnd. fabian’s taste is a little outside of my own, so i took a lot of inspiration from my friends who were jocks in high school or otherwise reminded me of fabian. frank ocean was the first artist i knew i wanted on his playlist, bc his music just strikes me as so intrinsically fabian (also i have a hc that fabian is bi and would probably look up to frank ocean as a bi person). childish gambino is one of my favorite rap artists bc his songs are all very hype and this is definitely a hype playlist. i put harry styles on there bc fabian was definitely a directioner and then got obsessed with harry once he started putting out his own music. there are a few wildcards on this playlist (see the two sea shanties and musical theater songs) however fabian would listen to sea shanties all the time and is definitely a musical theater nerd.
adaine’s playlist was super fun to make. i think when she was younger she probably didn’t get a chance to listen to music other than what her parents played (which i think was probably just classical or lots of piano music bc they’re ‘proper’) so i kept that in mind when choosing the songs. a lot of them have piano as the primary instrument bc i think even if she associated piano with her parents, she would find beauty in it as an instrument. as a departure from that, i put vivaldi’s four seasons on there because i can’t think of anything more properly ‘fuck you’ to her parents than listening to baroque music (i love baroque music, it slaps). i think adaine is a bit of an old soul in some ways, which is why i put some older songs on there (see: elton john, billy joel, the beatles, fleetwood mac). phoebe bridgers is one of those artists that makes me emotional when i listen to her bc of the weight in her lyrics, and i think adaine would seriously relate to some of her songs in a number of ways. florence + the machine is an artist whose music is completely ethereal to me, and that is the perfect vibe for adaine. monet issues by chase petra may seem out of place, but the lyrics are really what made me choose it for adaine’s playlist. it’s about letting go of your shitty family and choosing your own path and if that’s not adaine to a t i don’t know what is baby!
gorgug’s playlist is the most similar to my own music taste (as a former emo kid, i cannot escape). green day is usually a gateway for people to get into more hardcore/similar music that’s away from the mainstream so it was only fitting that i put them on there. nirvana is one of my favorite bands and i thought gorgug would love them both for their lyrics and dave grohl’s drumming. i stole some of the artists from my friend who’s in a punk band (descendents and misfits) but they still suit gorgug pretty well! i don’t know where the idea of gorgug listening to the mountain goats came from but i couldn’t agree with it more, so theyre on his playlist too! the vibe i was going for with gorgug’s playlist was chill rock mixed with some intense songs that could represent him going into a rage, and i think i managed that!
kristen’s playlist was the hardest to make, no contest. i wanted to capture her music taste from her helioic days and the music she would listen to as a queer teenager, which is why her playlist is absolutely a mess lmao. carrie underwood, bruce springsteen, and taylor swift are leftover from her childhood even though she still loves them (i can’t stand most country songs so there was a limited selection for me to be able to tolerate, i apologize country fans). i wanted a bunch of queer artists on here as well, so teagan and sara, frances forever, and girl and red were guaranteed. i don’t know why, but i think kristen would listen to 100 gecs and i think its hilarious so that’s why theyre on here as well. the last few hozier songs are mostly just what i associate with kristen (especially work song and foreigner’s god) so that’s why theyre on here.
i love riz to death but there is nothing you can say to convince me that before he met the bad kids his music taste wasn’t god awful. i have a friend who almost exclusively listens to video game soundtracks and 8 bit songs (which aren’t bad, just not my own taste) and that’s where i got some inspiration for riz’s playlist from. the rest of the playlist was inspired from another friend of mine, who listens to soft rock AND video game soundtracks so that’s where the killers, cosmo sheldrake, and bastille came from. i put johnny cash on there with the idea that sklonda and pok probably liked him a lot and riz started to like him by association (and also as a way to remember his dad). the last few songs, like on kristen’s playlist, are songs that i personally think of as ‘riz songs.’ brave as a noun is definitely not something riz would necessarily listen to all the time, but i think its a really good representation of his character (or at least the one i think of him as having). there are also some orchestral pieces that i think adaine would have showed him! the planets is a personal favorite of mine so it was only natural to include it.
