Things I Enjoyed in 2020 Despite Everything
Seasons Greetings! This year has felt like an eternity for so many reasons, and before it’s over, I’d like to take a look back on the distractions that got me through it. Along the way, I’ll occasionally point out where I was emotionally at the time and whether I got into a particular thing before or after the pandemic hit in mid March. I hope you enjoy this little retrospective of some of my experience during one of the worst years of human history!
Games & Mods
Might & Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven
When I was making my 2020 resolutions list late last year, one of my goals was to play more old games in my backlog and not buy many new games this year. That goal largely went on hold, because, well, I sought out enjoyment wherever I could find it instead of forcing myself to play one thing or another. But before Covid, I was really enjoying my new playthrough of M&M6. I’d made attempts at it before, but it was really GrayFace’s mod that made the game click for me. Modern features like quick saves and mouselook make the game much more accessible, and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to try an old-school RPG. It’s a great stepping stone into a mostly-dead genre. I’m hoping to get back to it soon. I just jumped ship to simpler ventures like Doom Eternal after the pandemic hit and haven’t looked back since.
Pathologic 2
I learned about the Pathologic series late last year and have since become a little obsessed with it. Hbomberguy’s lengthy video essay on the original game really intrigued me and lead me to trying the sequel/remake in April via Xbox Game Pass. In a weird way, it was cathartic to be a doctor in an even more dire situation than our current one and still see signs of the townsfolk trying to help each other deal with a supernatural plague and little help from their local government. The game helped me express a lot of what I was feeling at the time, when I was still getting used to working from home and wondering just how long this could go on for. I’ve gone back to it recently, and I’m hoping to finish it someday, if I can find a way to stop dying. Above all, Pathologic 2 teaches you how to make choices in no-win scenarios with little information or resources and still persevere, despite the world going to Hell around you. And that’s maybe the most important thing to practice at the moment.
Overwatch
I’ve continued to look forward to weekly Overwatch nights with my friends every Thursday, and it’s really important to have something like that right now. Even if it’s just a new episode of a show airing, a new video from a favorite YouTuber, or a regular Zoom call with coworkers, it helps so much to have something to anticipate from week to week and month to month. Otherwise, it’s really easy to feel like nothing’s going on besides the entropic deterioration of the universe. Overwatch itself helps with this, because it’s such a positive, bright, and optimistic game, as only Blizzard can create. And it’s improved a ton in the past couple of years, in a lot of ways. If you haven’t played in a while, hop in and check out all the new content with your friends; I think you’ll have a great time. It’s looking more and more like Overwatch 2 is right around the corner, and I’m very much looking forward to it.
Go
I learned how to play Go after watching a documentary released this year about  AlphaGo, the computer that beat the Go world champion, and I have a huge appreciation for the game now. I think it’s even more beautiful than chess, though even more insidious to learn. If you haven’t played before, start with a 9x9 board, teach yourself the basics, and try playing with another beginner friend. I guarantee you’ll be amazed at the amount of strategy and imagination that a game ostensibly about placing black and white stones on a grid can inspire. Go’s one of several new hobbies I’ve picked up this year, and those new hobbies have really helped me pass the time in a way that feels productive as well as take my mind off whatever depressing news just got blasted across Twitter.
Doom 64
Doom Eternal was fine, but Doom 64′s where my heart lies. The PC port on Steam is great, allowing everyone to easily play the game with mouse and keyboard. Its levels are tight and colorful, often asking the player to backtrack multiple times through the same areas to unlock new ones and take on whatever new twists await down each darkened corridor. It’s a surprisingly fresh experience. Unlike many modern Doom mods that strive to be sprawling marathons, 64′s levels are short but memorable, and the game is a great entry point to the series for newcomers because of that. Retro FPS’s continue to inspire and entertain me, and Doom 64 is one of my new favorites.
Golf With Your Friends
I’m not usually that into party games, but Golf With Your Friends strikes the right balance between casual tone and skill-based gameplay. The maps are vibrant and devious, the different modes are creative and often hilarious, and the pacing is near-perfect. If you’ve got a squad itching to play something together for a few nights, I guarantee you’ll have a lot of laughs trying to knock an opponent off the course or turning them into an acorn just as they’re about to attempt a nasty jump.
Quake 1 Mods
I probably sound like a broken record by now to a lot of you, but I won’t rest until I get more people into retro FPS’s. The outdated graphics and simple gameplay can be off-putting at first, but it doesn’t take long at all to get hooked after you’ve played the likes of excellent mods like Ancient Aliens for Doom 2 or Arcane Dimensions for Quake 1. And it’s only getting better, with this year marking probably the best year for Quake releases ever. The industry even seems to be taking notice again, with many talented mappers getting picked up for highly-anticipated, professional indie projects like Graven and Prodeus. And while the marketing around the retro FPS renaissance as the second coming of “boomer shooters” should be much maligned, the actual craft involved in making mods and brand new games in the genre has never been stronger. I even contributed four levels to the cause this year, but you’ll have to play them yourself to decide if they’re any good: https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/?filtered=burnham.
Streets of Rage 4
I had not tried Steam Remote Play before this year, but it works surprisingly well if you have a decent internet connection. Because of Remote Play, I was able to complete Streets of Rage 4 with my friends, and it was very close to the experiences I had as a kid playing brawlers like Turtles in Time on the Super Nintendo. The game is just hard enough to make you sweat during the boss fights but just easy enough that the average group of gamers can complete it in a night or two, which is ideal for adults with not a lot of free time.
Hard Lads
Hard Lads is a pure delight of a game by Robert Yang about the beauty of a viral video from 2015 called “British lads hit each other with chair,” which is even more ridiculous than it sounds. It made me smile and laugh for a good half hour, and I think it’ll do the same for you.
Commander MtG
The Commander format for Magic: the Gathering is one of my favorite things, and in 2020, I dug into it more than any other year. More so even than playing or watching it being played, I created decklists for hours and hours, dreaming up new, creative strategies for winning games or just surprising my imaginary opponents. I sincerely believe this little ritual of finding a new legendary creature to build around and spending a few days crafting a brew for it got me through the majority of this summer. I didn’t have a lot of creative energy this year, but I was able to channel the little I did have into this hobby. Especially during the longer, more frustrating or depressing days at work when I had nothing else to do or just needed a break, I could often dive back into card databases and lose myself in the process of picking exactly the cards that best expressed what I wanted to do for any given deck. And it’s nice to know I can always fall back on that.
Yu-Gi-Oh!
I played a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh! growing up but never had the cards or the skill to be particularly good at it. I just knew I enjoyed the game and the 4Kids show, but I quickly them behind when I got to high school. Fast forward to 2020, and the game and franchise have evolved substantially, not always for the better. But I do find it so intriguing, with a skeptical kind of adoration. It’s not nearly as well-supported as Magic, but what it does have are gigantic anime monsters on tiny cards with enough lines of text to make your head spin. And it’s so interesting to me that a franchise like that can continue to thrive alongside more elegant games like the Pokemon TCG and Hearthstone. And the further I’ve delved into how the game has changed since I stopped playing, the more invested I’ve become, going so far as to start buying cards again and looking into possible decks I might enjoy playing. An unequivocal win for Yu-Gi-Oh! is Speed Duel, which seeks to bring old players back to the game with a watered-down, nostalgia-laden format with fewer mechanics and a much smaller card pool. So if all you want to do is pit a Blue Eyes White Dragon against a Dark Magician, that’s 100% still there for you, but the competitive scene is still alive, well, and astoundingly complicated. And I think that’s kind of beautiful.
Black Mesa
I wasn’t expecting to have the tech to play Half Life: Alyx this year, so Black Mesa seemed like the next best thing. And it really is a love letter to the first game, even if it’s far from perfect. I even prefer the original, but I did very much enjoy my time with this modern reimagining. If you’ve never played a Half Life game before, I think it’s a great place to start.
VR via the Oculus Quest
Around halfway through this year, I started to get really stir crazy and yeah, pretty depressed. It seemed like I’d be stuck in the same boring cycle forever, and I know for a lot of people, it still feels like that. So VR seemed like the perfect escape from this dubious reality where you can’t even take a safe vacation trip anymore. And you know, I think it works really well for that purpose. The Oculus Quest is especially effective, doing away with cords or cables so you have as much freedom as you have free real estate in your home. I don’t have a lot of space in my studio apartment, but I have enough to see the potential of the medium, which is completely worth it. Next gen consoles are neat and all, but I’ve got my heart set on picking up the Quest 2 as soon as possible.
* Beat Saber
I was most looking forward to trying Beat Saber on the Quest, and I was not disappointed. You’d think rhythm games had reached their peak with Rock Band and DDR, but the genre keeps on giving with gems like this. It’s hard to convey if you’ve never tried it, but the game succeeds so well in getting your entire body into the rhythm of whatever song you’re slashing through.
* Half Life: Alyx
Again, I really did not expect to be able to experience this game as intended this year, and I still don’t think I really have. The Oculus Link for the Quest is admittedly a little janky, and my PC barely meets the minimum specs to even run the game. And yet, despite that, Alyx is one of my top three games of 2020 and maybe one of my all-time favorites. Even as I was losing frames and feeling the game struggle to keep up with all the AI Combine soldiers running around, I was still having a blast. For me, it is one of the best reasons to seek out and own VR and a pinnacle of game design in its own right.
Hades
For me, Hades has mostly been similar to every other Supergiant Game that I’ve played: fun and well-polished but ultimately not engaging enough to play for very long. And there’s always this sheen of trying to be too clever with their dialogue, narration, and music that rubs me the wrong way. But Hades is certainly their best game, and I can’t deny the effect it’s had on people, much like Bastion’s reception back in 2011. And I’m really hoping Hades gets more people into roguelikes, as a more accessible and story-driven approach to the genre. Timing-wise, I wish it hadn’t come out around the same time as Spelunky, because I think it did make some people choose one over the other, when the best choice is to play both and realize they’re going for very different experiences. The precise, unforgiving, arcade-like style of Spelunky isn’t fun for everyone, though, and Hades is thankfully there to fill in that gap. I’m really glad I found more time to play it this year at least to succeed on one escape attempt; it’s a fun game to think about in a game design context. And I do think the game has a lot of merit and is doing some clever things with difficulty that the studio likely could not have honed nearly so well without the help of Early Access. The most impressive part of the game to me is not the story or the music or the combat but the massive amount of contextual dialogue they somehow found time to program, write, and record at a consistently high level. All of this is just to say, Hades is obviously one of the best games of the year, and you should play it if you have any interest in it at all.
Spelunky 2
I’ve spoken a lot about this game on Twitter, so I’m not going to rehash much of that here. For me, it’s been a journey of over 1,000 attempts to learn the intricacies and secrets of a deep and demanding game that’s been as frustrating as it’s been rewarding. But it remains a constant source of learning and discovery as well as mastery and pride for me, and I still have hopes of reaching the Cosmic Ocean and getting all the trophies someday. It’s been a joy to watch other Spelunky players too, even as some fair worse than me and others fair far better. And the Daily challenge keeps me coming back, because seeing my name high up on the leaderboard just makes me feel so damn good (or at least I’ll get a good laugh out of a hilarious death). At its heart, Spelunky is a community endeavor, and I think it succeeds at that better than almost any other game this side of Dark Souls. I think it is my Game of the Year or at least tied with Alyx, I really can’t decide. If you don’t think you’d enjoy it, all I’ll say is, the frustration and difficulty are integral to the experience of discovery and surprise, and your brain is better at video games than you think.
Chess
Okay, yes, I watched and enjoyed The Queen’s Gambit, but I think 2020 had already primed people to get into chess this year regardless. Like Yu-Gi-Oh!, chess was a childhood pastime of mine that I really enjoyed and then quickly left behind as I discovered things like music and the internet. If I had to assign a theme to my 2020, it would be rediscovering old hobbies to remind myself how good life actually is. And now I’m more committed to chess than I ever was before. I’m watching international masters and grand masters on YouTube (as well as the incomparable Northernlion), I’m playing regularly on Chess.com, and I’m even paying for lessons and probably my own theory books soon. Like most fighting games, chess is a complicated form of dueling a single opponent with zero randomness, so mistakes are always on you. And modern chess platforms offer extremely good analysis tools, showing you exactly how, when, and why you screwed up so you can do better next time. Like Hearthstone, it’s a quick, addicting, tense, and rewarding way to train your brain and have fun. And it seems more popular now than ever, in part due to a certain Netflix original TV show...
TV
The Queen’s Gambit
I think a lot of people want to be Beth Harmon, even if they know they shouldn’t. It must feel so good to be the best at something and know you’re the best, even while under the influence of certain substances. It’s what makes characters like Dr. Gregory House so fun to watch, though you’d never want to work with the guy. For me, anyway, I always wanted to be a prodigy at something, and what little success I’ve had made The Queen’s Gambit very relatable to me. More so, it’s easy to relate to growing up in a conservative environment with few real friends and fewer outlets of expression, only to realize you’ve finally found your thing, and that no one can take it from you. That’s mostly what I’m going to take from The Queen’s Gambit anyway, more than chess or the Cold War commentary or the problematic relationships Beth has with her cadre of rivals/boyfriends. The show gets a strong recommendation from me for fans of chess as well as lovers of optimistic coming-of-age stories.
March Comes in Like a Lion
Similarly, March Comes in Like a Lion features a protagonist who is scarily close to a version of myself from like eight years ago. My best friend has been urging me to watch this show for years, and I’m still only a few episodes in. But I love how it portrays a young person who’s moved to a big city away from home for the first time, with nothing more than some meager possessions and the hopes of becoming the best in the world at something. And Rei is not confident in himself or outgoing at all, he’s extremely depressed despite pursuing his dreams and trying to distance himself from his somewhat toxic family. It’s a great reminder that the smallest kindnesses can often change our entire perspective on the world, and that even the people that seem the most well-equipped to handle life often still need help. I’ve been very fortunate to have people like that despite mistakes I’ve made, and I hope to be that person for others too.
Umbrella Academy
I’m pretty burnt out on superheroes, but UA put a good enough spin on them that they felt brand new. The show is rough in places, but it’s surprising in some really clever ways. And the comics are some of the wildest stories I’ve ever read, like Hitchhiker’s Guide meets Watchmen.
HunterXHunter
I binged about 100 of the 148 episodes of HxH this year, which I recognize is not a significant number in the wider world of long-running shounen anime, but it’s quite an undertaking for me to finish a show of this length. The series goes places I never expected and made me care so strongly for characters I thought I’d hate at first. It’s the smartest and most endearing show about a band of misfits going on crazy adventures and punching people for the good of the world that you’re likely to find.
Hannibal
This is the rare show that’s simultaneously comforting and nightmare-inducing if watched for extended periods. I can remember nights after binging a few episodes where I couldn’t get many of the disturbing images out of my head. Fair to say, Hannibal is not for the faint of heart, nor is it without some low points. But for those who enjoy gory thrillers or gritty detective dramas, it’s a must-watch.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Original Series, English Sub
You can probably imagine my surprise as I discovered this year that the Japanese version of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime is not only much better than the 4Kids version we got in the States, but it’s actually a decent show. The plot makes much more sense, it’s more interesting, the stakes are higher, the voices are better, and overall it’s just more enjoyable to watch. I don’t know if I’ll stick with it long enough to finish it this time, but this is definitely the way I’d do it and would recommend to others.
Fargo Season 4
It’s a miracle we even got another season of Fargo this year, let alone on time and of the same high quality as the first two seasons. It has a great setting, cast, and conflict. I love Chris Rock, and it was so cool to see him act so well in such a serious role. There’s a Wizard of Oz homage episode that is nearly flawless. And the post-credits scene at the end of the season is just the cherry on top. If you haven’t checked out Fargo by now, you are really missing out on some of the most interesting stuff happening in TV. I can’t wait to see what Noah Hawley does with the Alien franchise.
Movies
Cats
I had to include this one because it was the last full movie I saw in theaters before the pandemic hit. I technically went to Sonic too, but my friends and I walked out after about 30 minutes. The less said about that movie, the better. Cats, though, is a strange and curious beast (pun intended), adapting an already unruly animal (pun intended) to the big screen and yowling to be recognized (pun intended). But for every awkward or embarrassing scene, there’s one of pure joy and magic, like the extended ballet sequence or Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat. The film knows exactly what it is and leans into it hard, like a familiar yet slightly insane feline begging to be stroked, which I imagine is exactly what fans of the musical wanted.
Children of Men
There’s not much I can say about this film that probably hasn’t been said better elsewhere. I was intrigued to watch it when I learned it was one of my friend’s favorite movies. And I have to say, it’s really profound in a prescient way. Clive Owen gives one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. You should watch it, but only when you feel like taking a severe hit to the feels.
Basic Instinct
Vertigo is probably still my favorite film, so when I learned this year that Paul Verhoeven made a bloody, sex romp homage film to it in the 90s with Michael Douglas starring, I simply had to watch it. And you know, it’s not bad. It’s nowhere near as good as Vertigo, and you can see the ending coming a mile away. But what it does have is the immaculate Sharon Stone, who you cannot take your eyes off for the entire movie. And the movie knows it, making her look as alluring and suggestive as her character is to the detective investigating her. You could do worse than to watch it, just don’t expect any of Hitchcock’s subtlety or looming dread to seep into the final product.
Books
Dune
I finally finished Dune this year, and I can genuinely say it lives up to the hype. It’s not the easiest book to get through, but it’s by no means one of the most difficult either. I’m still bummed that the new film was delayed, but it might give me time to read the rest of the original book series.
The Fifth Season
Another fantastic piece of fiction, I cannot recommend this book enough. N.K. Jemisin is one of the best living authors of our time. If you want an original setting with a brilliant magic system and complex, compelling characters, look no further.
Video Content
Northernlion
I’ve been a fan of NL for years, though I’ve never been that into The Binding of Isaac. He just has a charismatic intelligence to him that sets him apart from most “Let’s Play” YouTubers to me, and he’s very funny to boot. I guess I’d say he seems a lot like me or the person I could picture myself being if I were a professional video content creator. So I was really excited for NL’s series of Spelunky 2 videos, and I still watch them every day, months later. And now he’s teaching me how to get better at chess, being a good 600 ELO higher than myself at the moment. His sarcastic and improv-laden banter have withstood the test of years and gave me some much-needed comfort and laughter in 2020. Somehow, the man even found a way to keep up his prolific output this year while raising his firstborn child. There are those who said it couldn’t be done...
The Command Zone - Game Knights
Josh Lee Kwai and the rest of the crew at The Command Zone continue to put out some of the most well-produced tabletop gameplay videos on the internet. It’s perhaps no surprise, seeing as how Lee Kwai created trailers for such blockbuster films as Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Jimmy Wong had a supporting role in the live action remake of Disney’s Mulan. But the crew around the two hosts are just as important and talented, and it’s clear that they all share the same singular vision for the channel’s future. They’ve carefully crafted a team of expert editors, animators, cosplayers, and voice actors to deliver one delightful video after the next at a consistently high level. If you’re into Magic: the Gathering at all, you simply need to watch Game Knights.
Cimoooooooo
I found Alex Cimo’s channel shortly after the algorithm learned I was interested in Yu-Gi-Oh! again, and at first, I was less than impressed with him. But it’s clear to me now that he not only loves what he does, he’s an expert Yu-Gi-Oh! player and analyst. Plus, he’s very good at explaining some of the more complex concepts in the game in a way that newcomers can understand. I’ve watched every new episode of The Progression Series and The History of Yu-Gi-Oh! so far, and they’re the best way I’ve found to learn how the game developed and changed over the last 20 years.
Team APS
This is another great Yu-Gi-Oh! channel, focusing more on skits, gimmick videos, and casual games rather than analytical or theoretical content. Mostly, they seem like a really great group of friends that just have a blast playing Yu-Gi-Oh! together, and their love for the game makes me want to play more too.
Tolarian Community College
Somehow, a community college English professor’s channel went from a quirky little deckbox review platform to the most popular Magic: the Gathering channel on YouTube in only a few years. But it’s easy to see why when Brian clearly loves what he’s doing more than most people ever will. He’s not only a fantastic reviewer and MtG scholar, he’s one of the most outspoken voices for positive change in the community and the game. Is he too hard on the Magic team at Wizards of the Coast? Perhaps, but without his measured and well-reasoned takes on all things Magic, I think we’d be much worse off.
IRL
Cooking
Even I get tired of eating the same things every day, so I’ve taken it upon myself to learn how to make more dishes, mostly out of sheer boredom. And I know I’m not alone in that, but I have to say it’s been a rewarding and fun adventure. It’s really surprising what you can throw together with a decent recipe and a little creativity in a modest kitchen when you decide to break away from the microwave for once.
Chinchillin’
Like many people, I felt that I needed a pet to survive this year, and I’ve always wanted a chinchilla. So I took a risk and bought one from a seller on KSL a few months ago, and my life has definitely changed for the better. No longer simply alone with my thoughts all day, I have a furry little companion to commune and bond with. And it’s more difficult to find time to feel sorry for myself when a basically helpless tiny creature depends on me for almost everything. Not to say it’s been a perfect experience however, people don’t say chins are difficult to care for for nothing. And I have learned more about them than perhaps I ever cared to know before, but that’s only made them more interesting to me as a result. Overall, I would recommend them as pets, just be prepared to give them a lot more time and attention than you would to say, a fish or a hamster. I’ve seen the commitment compared to that of a large dog, and I think that’s fair, though chins seem far more difficult to train and are far less cuddly. Basically, imagine a fluffy, super fast squirrel that can jump half your height, shed its fur at will if grabbed too tightly, that sleeps all day and bathes in dust, and that cannot get wet or too hot or eat 99% of human foods without serious complications. And they get lonely, and they all have their own surprisingly distinct personalities, some shy and mischievous, others bright and social, and everything in between. But I’m glad to be part of my little buddy’s life and hope to make it a long and enjoyable one for him. Part of why I wanted a chinchilla so badly is they typically live between 10-20 years, much longer than the average rodent or even many cats and dogs. And they’re sadly endangered in the wild, poached for their incredibly soft fur, which is why I believe it’s critical that we care for and learn more about them now. And above all, I adore my chinchilla’s antics, even when he continually tries to dig up and eat the paper bedding below his cage when I’ve provided perfectly edible hay and pellets for him in much easier to reach locations.
And that’s all, folks...
If you’ve read this far, know that I really appreciate it and hope you learned something new about yourself, art, or the world. And please do let me know what’s kept you going the most this year too, as I suspect I’ll still be searching for new distractions next year, even after I’m able to get a Covid vaccine injection. As Red Green would say, we’re all in this together, and I’m pullin’ for ya. <3

Hey there ! Apparently you like video-games (or at least Smash), so what's your favourite one ?
Hookay, so… I know this is going to get long, so adding a Read More, but the short answer is: I don’t have a clear cut favorite, but some of my favorites include such well known properties as Mass Effect and lesser known ones like Sudeki. I’m not some gaming guru but I definitely have some Opinions™ about video games.
Favorite First Person Shooter: Halo: Reach. Generally, I don’t ask for much in my FPS; let me kill shit and the less I have to reload, the better. However, Halo: Reach, being at the time the 4th game in the franchise that served as the prequel to the entire series, provided an excellent story with great characters and an underlying message about the indomitable human soul.
Favorite Real Time Strategy: Halo Wars. Okay, yes, another entry from the same franchise, but!!! This one also has some fantastic characters and a great storyline, even if it’s… somewhat confusing when considering the bigger narrative (Halo in general is just messy af and retconned-but-not all to hell anyway). Still, it’s a fun, mostly intuitive RTS, which is notoriously difficult on consoles.
Favorite Horror Game: Resident Evil. Listen, this game came out when I was seven, and my Uncle let me play it to fuck with me. Nothing will be scary than those early PS1 graphics, the loading screen a constant tease of ‘what’s behind this door? Is it death? It’s probably death!’ that got me good. Fear Factor comes a close second, as though it wasn’t much of a horror game, the game mechanic of your character’s rising stress level kept me on the fucking edge.
Favorite Final Fantasy: Final Fantasy X. Listen. I don’t care how awkward Tidus’ laugh was. I don’t even mind how passive Yuna was. Blitzball was amazing and I have forgiven all sins. No, seriously, I loved the cast in FFX, much like other FF games, and Seymour was a villain I enjoyed hating with every fiber of my being, and even some of the mini games were fun, too. But Blitzball could’ve been a standalone game and I would’ve bought it. Still would.
Favorite JRPG: Sudeki. If you didn’t get a chance to play this on the original XBOX, you missed out. The characters were fun, if a bit goofy, and the high fantasy mixed with science fiction was a nice touch. What really sold me, though, was the AI. Not only could you switch between different available characters in the middle of a fight- very easily and very intuitively- but the AI actually behaved very well, saving my ass more than a time or two. In most games, AI are either cannon fodder, immortal, or require close attention/precise manipulation of their preset actions. Not in Sudeki; some fights, I could actually stand back and let my party do their work, and that was immensely gratifying. Yeah, the ending was a bit of a let down, but it didn’t erase how much fun I had with the rest of the game.
Favorite Super Smash Brothers: Super Smash Brothers Melee. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of the elements in the sequels but SSBM was the version I played most heavily with friends, so I have the most fond memories of it. Plus, it was before they changed Link’s moveset, which I’m still high key upset about. (I don’t like the new bombs or his new down attack.)
Favorite Series: Mass Effect. Now, one might expect Halo to be my favorite series, seeing as two of the games are some of my all time favorites, but… nah. When you take out the multiplayer element, the Halo games didn’t have much left. Yes, they had a galaxy spanning conflict with twists and turns but, honestly, Mass Effect did it better, with better world building and exploration, and a lot of interactive features that I enjoyed. From what I played of Andromeda, (long after it released, so no weird bugs yet), it continued to build on the foundation of the original trilogy, though I would’ve preferred to stay in the Milky Way, and Ryder can’t hold a candle to Shepard. Still, even what issues I have with the series (LET ME ROMANCE KROGANS, DAMNIT) don’t detract from the excellent story, fun gameplay, and intriguing mystery.
Favorite Elder Scrolls: … okay, I actually don’t like any of them, tbh. And??? I’m not sure why??? I actively can’t stand Skyrim.
Favorite Soulsborne: There is only Dark Souls, and it’s the pinnacle of ‘I don’t need my brain for this’ for me. It’s just… run around and kill things. Nothing matters. I think the main difference between this and Skyrim is the way the player character moves. ES games look so… silly. At least Dark Souls looks silly for a reason.
Favorite Sports Game: NCAA 2007. I’d rather play as a college team than a professional one. Although, NFL Blitz comes a very close second, purely because it gave no fucks and only barely qualifies as a sports game.
Favorite ‘Oh Fuck’ Game: It’s a tie between Minecraft and ARK: Survival Evolved. And you’re asking ‘how are those two in the same category’ and the answer is ‘because the only difference between the two for me is, which is going to kill me, lava or a raptor?’ and don’t ask how I die to these two things with equal frequency. More to the point, I usually play these games with friends, and thus my ‘oh fuck’ moments are witnessed by others, or I witness their ‘oh fuck’ moments. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re sad, but they leave an impact and, hey, that’s fucking impressive.
Favorite Pokemon Game: Blue Version. Yeah, it’s a bit of a cop out, but the original game I got back when Pokemon first came over to the States actually taught me a life lesson: that it is possible to play a game wrong, which is what I was doing. So, I started over, and I was much happier for it! No matter what features are added to the franchise, I don’t think I’ll ever gain such an important life lesson from one again, so it’s gonna stay at the top of the list.
Favorite Chill Game: Any Harvest Moon. Let me tend my farm. (I haven’t had a chance to play Stardew Valley, which is basically Harvest Moon but gay, so that’ll probably take the top spot once I get a chance to play it.)
Favorite Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Although there are some aspects of Majora’s Mask I liked better, OoT had fishing. Yes, that’s honestly my favorite part of the game. I love fishing in video games. Don’t judge me.
Favorite Team Game: Overwatch. Love the character designs and gameplay. Witch!Mercy still owns my soul.
Favorite Battle Royale: Apex Legends. For some reason, one of the few ‘competitive’ games that doesn’t spark my frustration when I lose. Dunno why, it’s just fun. Lightning rounds are great, too!
Favorite Hack-n-Slash: Brutal Legends. Heavy metal, axes, and guitars- everything from the aesthetic to the gameplay is fun and the story is interesting as well. The RTS portion can get a bit annoying but, other than that, no complaints here.
Favorite Fable: Fable III. I endorse any game that allows me to woo as many people as I can find who are attracted to me. Let me have as many spouses as I want, one in each city. I will marry half the kingdom, damnit, just watch me.
Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I know I’m missing some but I’ve sunk perhaps hundreds of hours into the games listed, so, yeah.

V and Y for the fandom même :)
V - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms
WELL I am a bit of a multishipping whore so I’ll tell you my true OTPs as in the ones where they’re my only true ship in the fandom and while I may have dabbled in a few others I always return to these. Yes they are all hetero, don’t @ me about it.
Max/Alec - Dark Angel. Two hot, genetically engineered supersoldiers who have a shared life experience but also not and really do not understand each other, but absolutely understand each other, and hate each other but also are kind of Best Frenemies? Sign me the fuck up.
This ship has been ruining my life for goddamn eighteen years, OK? THIS SHIP is old enough to fucking vote. Fuck this ship.
Jeff/Annie - Community. You know what, I didn’t hear the whole ‘thats kinda creepy’ commentary on this ship until relatively recently, probably because when I was actively involved in the fandom it was the biggest ship. Regardless, I never found it weird, probably because the show called out the age difference really early on so it kind of made it not weird? IDK. Whatever, these two absolutely kill me ok? And even though it kind of got resolved in the finale it also didn’t, so the show never had the chance to ruin it.
Why do I love them? LBR I love friends to lovers via lots of mishaps and misunderstandings and these two literally epitomise this. They’re also equally as dumb and smart as one another
Beth/Rio - Good Girls. Y’all know this one because the show’s still on but whatever. I have never had a ship jump up and slap me in the shocked and unprepared face like these two. At the end of season 1 I was asking myself if it was weird that I wanted them to bang, and immediately went on reddit to see that other people were saying the same thing. At the time there wasn’t a lot on AO3, maybe like a page and a half but THANK GOD that changed or I may have died.
Enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers FUCK ME UP.
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)
Hmmmm this is a hard one because I blacklist a lot of stuff and/or have generally seen/read whatever at least some of the content.
I guess any gaming fandom though, I don’t play a lot any more and when I do I don’t get into the fandom side of things. So like Dragon Age, Overwatch, and even Pokemon. Never got into it as a kid and only play Pokemon Go now. Will still reblog anything from the live action movie until the end of time though JSYK.

Commission Guide
Commission Rules and Guidelines + How to Request
-Fandoms-
My list of fandoms I write for is constantly growing as I read and watch and play more things. I also may have forgotten to list a few, so don't be afraid to ask about a fandom! An up to date list of fandoms I write for can be found at the end of this post for easy reference, or via the link in my description.
-Genres, Prompts, and Content Rating-
I can write for any genre you would like. Specify which you are interested in, or let me surprise you.
I can write from prompts you see on my page, prompts you find other places, or a plot you came up with. Just be sure to word it carefully so the right idea is portrayed! A fun idea is using a song as a prompt. It allows for lots of ways to interpret it!
Content I write is most often PG-13, but I can do R-Rated. This being said, please notify me of anything that may offend you so I can create something you will enjoy reading. Alternatively, let me know what is okay to incorporate into the story.
-Default Writing Style-
There are things I do in my writing if there is no specifications made in that area:
- If it is a x Reader story, I write in first person (Example: I adjusted my bag.)
- I usually follow the plot of the canon universe, save for a few changes necessary to make the story work
- I use some swearing, if it is in character (This can be censored or omitted)
-Things I Will NOT Write-
- Incest, pedophilia, beastiality
- Anything that glorifies suicide or self-harm (different from depicting it)
- Anything that glorifies abusive behavior (different from depicting it)
- Anything that promotes racism, homophobia, or sexism (that includes the kind of fake feminism that states that women are better than men)
- Fanfiction of real people is not my thing. I don't want to write it.
- Anything that gives out personal information about you or others
- Any sort of hate promotion
- Real life politics (Not my area of expertise at all)
If you have questions about if your request breaks my rules, please ask! The worst I can do is tell you I won't accept your request.  I am happy to clarify anything you may have questions on.
-Examples of information to give for a commission-
The more of the following you include in your request, the easier it will be for me to have a handle on what to create for you. Here are the things I recommend listing in your request:
- the main character(s), and how to refer to reader character (If doing a reader based story)
- a prompt or plotline (a song can work as a prompt too)
- Point of view
- Any alterations to the fictional universe being used as a base (Alternate Universes and Universe Alterations)
- Word count limit (This determines how much you pay. If more is written, it is not charged for.)
- When you would like to have it done by
All this being said, there are lots of ways to go about this. If you only have a general idea of what you want, that is fine too! I am happy to work with you to get what you want out of the story. Alternatively, the more details you give, the more of them I can integrate into the story. Last, you could go as simple as asking for a character and giving a word limit and let me work my magic! It is completely in your hands on how to make a request.
-Pricing-
Price is a penny per word up to 2000 words.
After for pieces longer than a limit of 2000 words, the price is 1 and 1/2 pennies per word.
For easy reference, a 500 word commission would cost $5. A 2500 word piece would cost $37.50.  A table of word counts and prices is at the end of this post for easy budgeting.
You set the word limit. If I go over the limit, you only pay up to the limit. Consider the rest a bonus for getting me inspired. Standard limits are between 200 words and 2000 words. Anything longer will require more planning.
-Logistics-
Keep in touch - We can communicate via email or messaging. It’s your choice.
Payment - When the commission request is accepted, I will send you an invoice via PayPal or Square based on your preference. The invoice can be done one of 2 ways, either pay in full up front, or pay half before and half after completion.
Publishing - I will not publish the commission unless I have your express permission to do so. If it is published, you can choose to be tagged in it or not.
Receiving the document - I will send you a PDF file with your completed commission.
Altering a finished commission - If there is something you want changed about the commission for any reason, I will do so and send you the new version. If the alterations require 100 or more words to be added, the base rate of a penny per word will be charged. If the alterations remove 100 or more words, the amount removed will be refunded.
When you send in your request, please use the phrase 'Cybernetix is the future' as a pass code so I know you have read through this and understand my process.

Excuse me! But where is my Sanders Sides Gamer AU???
Voices in my head: Gee Bunny, it seems you have no problem writing a lot of other fics and stuff yet you still haven’t even finished the next chapter of your Spiderverse fic???
Me: SHUT THE FUCK UP DISEMBODIED VOICES IN MY HEAD!!! IF YOU WANT THAT FIC DONE SO BADLY TELL MY LOGIC AND CREATIVITY TO GET THEIR ASSES IN GEAR AND GIVE ME SOME GOD DAMN INSPIRATION!!!!
Voices in my head:.....
Me: Yeah, that’s what I thought! Anyways, idk if I just missed a memo or something but I haven’t seen any Gamer AU of my boys and that is a crime in and of itself! Like, how dare! But fret not, I am here to provide content (Read: headcannons) that you did not ask for! Let us begin! Or should I say start!
(please note that I am not a gaming expert so feel free to add or correct stuff)
NOW WITH A PART 2!!!!
MAIN SQUAD
Roman Rosewood
Obviously loves RPGs! Anything with a good story line really! Or has medieval fantasy aesthetic!
Skyrim, Diablo, Undertale, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Undertales, Dragon Age, God of War Dark Souls, Assassins Creed, Earthbound, etc.
Played West of Loathing just so he could rip on it but actually ended up loving it and spending way to many hours playing. Then he found out there was a game called Kingdom of Loathing by the same creators and went down that rabbit hole as well.
He was iffy about getting into JRPGs but then Virgil convinced him to play Persona 5 and he absolutely fell in love with the music!
All the music in his phone is either from musicals or Video games!
Also really likes choose your own adventure games like Detroit: Become Human, Life is Strange, and Telltale Games
So much video game merch! Usually figurines because he likes to make little shelves and display cases for them.
He also really likes multiplayer games because he’s a social butterfly and likes to play with his squad.
Sucks at first person shooter games but still willingly plays Fortnight or Call of Duty or Left for Dead with his friends because he doesn’t want to be a drag and complain. But also they sometimes die in game in the most hilarious ways and it just leaves everybody wheezing.
Virgil Dante
Horror games, obvs!
All about that dark aesthetic!
Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, Fran Bow, Sally Face, Resident Evil, The Witch’s House, Amnesia, Little Nightmares, Bendy and The Ink Machine, Alice: Madness Returns, SCP-Containment, Pony Island, etc.
Yes, he’s played all the Five Nights At Freddy’s games. It’s a good series and it isn’t his fault the fandom is bat shit crazy and full of ten year olds! Fuck you Roman!
Every time the Walking Dead comes out he knows he’ll end up crying by the end of it. He and the squad make and event out of it.
Japanese horror games are usually his favorite because they deal more with the psychological aspects of horror instead of the jump scares
So, yes, he’s also a fan of Corps Party and Fatal Frame
Also really good at first person shooters because he has a really steady hand (you usually have to when playing horror games least you want to restart the level) and it pisses Roman off to no end every time Virgil randomly headshots him.
Usually likes to by merch in the form of posters, t-shirts, or beanies. He only buys figurines if it’s a game he really, really likes.
At first didn’t know why people kept bugging him to play Doki Doki Literature Club but then he finally caved and...oh...that’s why.
Logan Mill
My boy loves puzzle and strategy games yo!
Legend of Zelda, Portal, Tetris, Unravel, World of Goo, Inside, Limbo, Pokemon, Shadow of the Colossus, StarCraft, Command and Conquer, Age of Empire, Heart of Iron, World of Warcraft, etc.
He likes Overwatch but doesn’t like playing with people online so he usual solos or asks the others to play. But that too usually ends in chaos.
Hates rage games because he gets frustrated easily and has broken at least four keyboards and two controllers
He still plays them anyways because he can beat it damn it! Just give him a minute!
Enjoys the God of War series despite all the mythological inaccuracies
He plays a lot of Minecraft to relax or destress and has build beautiful works of architecture and sometimes entire cities.
He thought it was stupid and childish and was embarrassed about it for a long time until the squad came over to his house one day uninvited and caught him playing. He was getting ready for them to make fun of him but they instead gushed about how AMAZING everything looked and how TALENTED he was for building all himself.
Logan ends up showing them how to play afterwards and they work together to make weird sculptures and complex tunnels underground.
He likes practical merch like backpacks, coffee mugs, pencil holders, notebooks, ect. as well as a few t-shirts and novelty ties.
Yes, he does collect Pokemon cards!
Patton Adley
Silly dating sims, farming games, and any cute game really! Plus a few side scroller games!
Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, Slime Rancher, The Sims, Dream Daddy, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Monster Prom, Hatoful Boyfriend, Scribblenauts, Night In The Woods, Ni Nu Kuni, etc.
Big Nintendo fan!
He made the mistake of playing Doki Doki Literature Club without reading the warning tags and regrets it immensely...still a good game though.
He did the same thing with Huni Pop but that one made him laugh more then anything and he kind of got addicted to it. Then he found out there was a sequel called HuniCam so he went down that rabbit hole too.
He likes a lot of phone app games too like Cut the Rope, Neko Atsume, and Candy Crush.
Loves trashy dating app games, he thinks they’re so funny and cheesy
He was addicted to Mystic Messenger for a long while
Just because he has his preference doesn’t mean he won’t try other games too, Logan got him hooked on World of Warcraft (though really he did that to everyone), Virgil showed him Hollow Knight, and Roman suggested he play Undertales.
Prefers merch in the form of plushies and key chains!
He likes to bake and decorate cookies, cakes and pastries in the form of his favorite video game characters.
RED SQUAD
Duncan [Deceit] Adley (Patton’s twin)
A lot of first person shooter and combat games!
Doom Series, Super Smash Bros, Mortal Combat, Halo, Fortnight, Grand Theft Auto, Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Destiny, Wolfenstein, Bio Shock, Splatoon, PUBg etc.
Patton was the one that introduced him to Splatoon and he won’t admit that it’s actually super fun.
Doesn’t mind story driven games and RPGs but he really just wants something he can zone out to and relax
He likes to troll people online, mainly assholes picking on little kids who just want to play.
He once teamed up with a group of kids on Call of Duty solely for the purpose of collectively kicking the asses of this groups of so called “real gamers” that were being jerks.
Has memorized all the combos! He doesn’t have time to sit and look up a cool finishing move, he needs it now!
Always mains the weakest/most useless character in fighting games and still manages to kick everyone’s ass.
Doesn’t have a preference in merch and usually grabs whatever he likes be it figurines, t-shirts, posters, plushies, or whatever, so long as he likes the game it comes from.
Has several tattoos from his favorite games
Emile Picani
Classic retro games, cartoonish games, and Nintendo are his jam broham!
Mario, Classic Sonic, Paper Boy, Transylvania, Spyro, Pac Man, All the Saga Disney games, Duck Hunt, Mario Kart, Galaga, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Secret of Mana, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, etc.
Absolutely fell in love with Shovel Knight when it came out!
Remy got him into all the indie pixel games: Towerfall, Terraria, Owlboy, Hotline Miami, Papers Please, Celeste, One Shot, etc.
Duncan was the one that introduced him to Cuphead and the usually play it together and see how far each of them can go without dying.
The game is difficult but the art is still so breathtaking!
Likes the occasional psychological thriller game
Bet Virgil showed him Alice: Madness Returns and Doki Doki Literature Club (after he’s played it of course)
Likes plushies and figurine merch with the occasional poster and coffee mug.
Likes to doodle a lot of his fav video game characters and cartoons and is actually really good at it. He helped design most of Duncan’s tattoos.
Remy Knightly
Likes a lot of indie games and old online flash games!
The Stanley Parables, Oxenfree, Inside, Firewatch, Super MeatBoy, The Binding of Issac, Donut County, Henry Stickman series, Impossible Quiz, Crush the Castle series, Hyper Light Drifter, etc.
He always gets everybody hooked on one game or another
He convinced everyone to play Undertales so for like a month they all went through a HUGE Undertales faze.
Was the actual, ACTUAL one that showed Duncan Cuphead because he knew the dork would be reminded of Emile because of the animation and would want to show it to him and play multiplayer (*cough* subtle matchmaker *cough*)
(Do not be fooled, he is a pinning boy himself)
Is up to date in all the gossip of the latest games and consuls, indie or mainstream! He’s in the know, know and if you need to know something chances are Remy probably knows it.
Weeds out through all the indie horror games for Virgil and recommends what he thinks are the best ones.
Same thing with Logan and his puzzle games, he’s usually is able to find very strange ones and Logan seems to likes those best.
Obviously has a lot of merch in coffee mug and thermal form as well as a few key chains.
Occasionally streams on Twitch with Duncan and Emile (sometimes inviting the main squad too), they’re commentary is usual hilarious.

Ramblings
Ok, so I just found out that one of my favorite gamers ever (that had basically sparked my loving for gaming in the first place) was actually Fire Emblem.
I'm not going to go into too much detail, but basically I had this one game on my Gameboy I absolutely LOVED eons ago, however at the time I was young and illiterate as fuck so I could never remember the name was. After some time of playing the game, I grew to really enjoy playing it even if my tiny young brain could barely read half of what they're saying, but one-day I lost the game cartridge......forever.
I had spent so much time loving the game that loosing it really frustrated me, but as kids usually do, I moved onto the next thing; though never really forgetting about the game.
Trails of games
If it wasn't obvious, I love games and gaming, but I didn't realize how much until now.
Over the next decade+ of my life I would fall in love with several other games I could get my hands on. Games such as: Disgaea, Makai Kingdom, Phantom Brave, Pokemon, Overwatch, Dead by Daylight, Nier Automata, Persona 5, Final Fantasy, Minecraft, Kingdom Hearts, Monster Hunter World, Infamous, etc. There are probably a bunch others, these are the ones that really come to mind. I love all these games, even if some of them made me want to tear my hair out and others made me feel like my heart was being torn out of my body (I'm not salty, I promise).
In conclusion
The reason I remembered all of this was actually because of the new Fire Emblems that came out "recently". I saw gameplay of it's combat and it reminded so much of the old game I had to look it up, and to my absolute surprise, it turns out the game I had played all those years ago was "Fire Emblems: The Sacred Stones".

What are some of your favorite videogames?
I’m super bad at making decisions so here’s an essay about this ask. If you just wanted a list I put the relevant games in bold.
I’m a sucker for a good strategy game and have loads of hours logged in Paradox grand strategy games (Crusader Kings 2 and Stellaris mostly, I keep meaning to learn EU4 but somehow always end up murdering my CK2 second cousins instead). I like the Total War franchise a lot (some more than others – Attila is my fave) but I do get tired of them pretty quick, I have to take them in small doses. And of course there’s Civ V (VI is aesthetic goals but the diplo sucks). I like squad strategy games like XCOM as well (I still log into XCOM 2 occasionally to attempt their dailies). I used to go NUTS for Soulsborne games but kinda got burnt out after DSIII – I have yet to decide if I wanna play Sekiro or not. Dark Souls 1 is definitely still my favorite of these, with Bloodborne close behind it.
I love Mortal Kombat just for the gratuitous violence (It’s WWE with gore, what’s not to love?) and can’t really rank these – though I was really fond of 9.But my first and last love is character-driven western RPGs, which are unfortunately few and far between these days with Bioware getting gutted. Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is one of my favorites of all time, and I don’t even want to know how many hours I have in various playthroughs. I replay Dragon Age Origins once a year or so (though I’m not as fond of the other installments in the franchise). Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is an oldie but a goodie, and it’s worth a play if you can get past the fact that it was made in like 2002 and controls like asscakes. I like Obsidian RPGs a lot, but seeing as I’m a sappy romantic at heart, I really hate that you can’t romance anyone in their games (I’m still sour that Fallout: New Vegas didn’t let me date Veronica). I’m hesitant to name Kingdom Come Deliverance, because even though I was in love with that game when it came out, it’s been soured for me by the monumentally bad takes its head developer decides to fart out on a regular basis. Also faves, and in no particular order: Portal 1 and 2, Half-Life 2 + Episodes, Okami, Horizon: Zero Dawn, the reboot Tomb Raider series (I know, they’re trash, but I love them), The Sims franchise (guilty pleasure), Titanfall 2, Dishonored 1, Shadow of Mordor, the Mass Effect series, Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice, Pokemon games, Fire Emblem games, the Metroid series– and probably a lot more that are slipping my mind at the moment.
You’ll notice almost none of these are multiplayer games. That’s because I am uncontrollably competitive and multiplayer games make me cause property damage, so I have cut myself off from them because they are bad for my: controllers, blood pressure, headsets, television, interior walls, and marriage. That said, I do still attempt them. I have been known to break things for Apex Legends from time to time. Back in days of yore, I was pretty handy at the original Titanfall. I loved Evolve when it first came out, before DLC and microtransactions ripped it to shreds, and went through a really intense Overwatch phase that ended when Sombra was released because I was too impatient to learn a new hero. Usually you’ll only find me playing these sorts of games for about a month before I get burned out on rage and go back to murdering people to gain the throne of England.

Self-Insert Positivity Day!!
I think I’ll just...go through all these questions in order. I can’t really think of any way to really tweak it or improve on it.
What got you into self shipping/self insert content? Who or what inspired you?
Honestly, like a lot of the replies I’ve seen, I’ve been shipping myself with characters and inserting myself into their worlds since before I knew it was a common thing that people did. It seems like for as long as I can remember, with every movie or TV show I watched, or every game I played, I’d find some way to imagine myself right in the thick of things, making friends with the different characters, helping them with their fights...and eventually, in some cases, even dating some of them.
It wasn’t that I had a particularly troubled childhood--I had friends at school, a brother to play with at home, and things at home were pretty good for the most part. But I had--and still continue to have--a very active imagination. Being in the “real world” wasn’t good enough for me; I wanted more. I wanted adventure and action and fun, a chance to make a different somewhere, and self-inserting made that possible for me. I still kept in on the down-low, though. I’m...a little too used to the weird glances and questions people sometimes give, so for the most part it’s just between me and fellow self-shippers!
I didn’t actually get into the self-insert/self-ship community until around October of last year. I’m not even sure what really prompted it--I just remember noticing a lot of blogs at around the same time, openly posting and gushing and sharing content about things that I’d...always done, but had never realized that other people do this, too. It was a great moment for me to realize that I wasn’t alone, and that there was a whole online community who would understand my hobby!
What do you like to do when it comes to self ship/self insert? Are you a content creator, or do you enjoy taking part in things?
Tumblr media
I’m largely a writer, and I’ve written all sorts of self-indulgent things for my various ships throughout the years. Most of them were pretty bad, not gonna lie, but I had fun writing them anyway. I kept most of them tucked away in notebooks--sadly, I don’t have much of my older pieces, but I remember filling three separate notebooks purely with a self-insert series set in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (and these were three separate “books”. I’m actually very proud of past me for cranking out that much work, and I envy that level of executive function).
I haven’t posted much recently, but it’s mostly because I have too many ideas of what to write, and not enough ideas of how to execute any of them. I’ve also tried to get back into drawing more self ship content, too--I’m not always confident in my art, but you can’t improve if you never practice!
I really like taking part in the events the self ship community has--takeovers and “to my S/I” are probably my two favorites, just because it’s a great chance to get to know each other and their various F/Os.
How long have you been self shipping or creating self inserts for?
Like I said above, it’s pretty much been going on for as long as I can remember. Most of my self inserts are just me, but tweaked in some way--stronger, or faster, or with some sort of skillset I only wish I had in real life. In my ff.net days, my self inserts were under the very thin disguise of being OCs (I named them after myself 95% of the time, and looking back I doubt this really fooled anyone. But I was 14 at the time, so I convinced myself that this was a Very Clever and Foolproof Thing).
Have you made any friends within the community?
Tumblr media
Oh geez, yes! I’ve met so many wonderful and lovely people in the community, and I’m partially scared to list them all out in case I forget someone by accident ;-; But I’ll list of a bunch of notable people that come to mind, either because we’ve talked a lot, they’ve inspired me in some way, I admire them and their blog, or some combination of all three.
@mezzanottespazzatura (Discord friendo and always listens when I constantly bombard her with half-baked AUs xD)
@tayshipping (Fellow AC and Overwatch shipper!!! We don’t talk much but I’d love to change that sometime)
@catbov (We haven’t talked much but I see you in my notifications all the time and I love you)
@raspberrylimerickey (Fellow Grimm shipper, also your ship names are A+)
@justafictionalthing (You’re so nice to me I know we don’t talk much but I love you)
@sun-bea-m (You’ve also popped up in my notifications a lot lately--I see you and I love you)
@comic-books-and-snipers (We should definitely talk more, your blog [and also your old one at @xdigital-hearts] is part of what got me to make my own blog!)
@selfshippingsylveon (I remember you being one of the first blogs I followed and I’m so glad I did, I love seeing you on my dashboard!)

List-O-Muses
So, I have a lot, a few I cannot remember, a few I’ve never put on Tumblr... So I shall put up a list of them all... by category! Only certain muses will get an explanation and not all have blogs, the ones I remember that do will have them!
Also some blogs might have autoplay, I will label the ones I remember. Some of these blogs have not been touched in years, I apologize
Muse I’ve Had since Before Tumblr
Lexara (OC)- Originally a special agent of some kind, I made her around about 2005, when I first started to read Manga and started drawing characters. She had short hair- Like me at the time, and she was tough and rugged... because my protected catholic ass hadn’t learned the word ass or any swear word ever.
Muses I’ve had on Tumblr
Category 1- KH and FF
Leon/Squall (Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy VIII)- This blog still exists for the nostalgia. I don’t rp on it, but this was my gateway to RP in 2011 on this sight. I made it to be on an AU KH RP community, but it never happened, but I found some of my oldest and closest friends there, so yaaaay!! URL- http://transient-awoken.tumblr.com/ AUTOPLAY WARNING
Zidane Tribal (Final Fantasy IX)
Data Sora (Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded)
Reeve/Cait Sith (Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerberus)
Vincent Valentine (Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerberus)
Zack Fair (Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, Final Fantasy Crisis Core)- Url- https://gongagan-soldier.tumblr.com/
Axel/Lea (Kingdom Hearts)- URL- http://flamesxofxeternity.tumblr.com/
Vanitas- URL- https://menfilik.tumblr.com/
Category 2- TOME Canon Characters (because I have OCs too)
Nylocke- WAAAAAAY Back in 2011, I made him a blog, no one else was around, I cried, i deleted, but back them was when I started thinking of Omega... so that’s a plus
Zetto/Kirbopher- My second attempt at a TOME blog that I loved! the icon is from Muffin, I remember seeing the older one going omg it’s perfect, then I got to know her and she is very nice from what I remember (it’s been a while) URL- http://thexcyborgximp.tumblr.com/
Alpha/Kajet- URL- http://godsheritage.tumblr.com/ idk if it is auto play, but there is the possibility of music so AUTOPLAY WARNING
Sofdti/GC- http://lifelinkoftome.tumblr.com/
Category 3- TOME OCs (I’m putting them all here, even though some might fit in other categories)
Omega- He is one of my all time favorite muses I’ve ever made, I love using him, and I even named my car after him, same orange he has on his outfit. URL-http://remorseformistakes.tumblr.com/
King- Based off of an AU with a character named Lady Tigerlilly where the Virus takes over Zetto’s life. URL- http://incurableshadows.tumblr.com/
Squire- Same AU as above, but the other half of King’s code. Same URL.
Velvet- The Prototype to the Antivirus and ‘Older Sister’ of Cake’s oc Amber. I have done a lot more with her in private RP, so she’s grown more than the blog shows. URL- http://purpuravitae.tumblr.com/
Mocha Latte- The Barista of the Netkings named Jane Doe.
Category 4- Canon Misc (the muses on Tumblr that I used that aren’t big enough to class on their own like 1-3 were)
Yang (RWBY)- URL- http://blazing-beauty.tumblr.com/ AUTOPLAY WARNING
Sombra (Overwatch)- URL- https://boop-the-planet.tumblr.com/ Possible AUTOPLAY WARNING
Ryuko Matoi (Kill La Kill)- URL- http://alliancexofxlifexfibers.tumblr.com/ AUTOPLAY WARNING
Yami Yugi/Atem (YGO from Season 0 to 5 and the movies)- URL- https://forgotten-monarch.tumblr.com/
Raiden (Metal Gear Solid 2, 4, and Revengeance)
Pikachu (Pokemon)
N (Pokemon)
Male Pokemon Trainer (Pokemon Black and White)
Endrance (.hack series)
Haseo (.hack series)
Jade Curtiss (Tales of the Abyss)
Amaterasu (Okami Series)- I think I managed to get the blog url ‘Mother of All’, but that was ages ago
Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic Series)
Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
Nagito Komaeda (Danganronpa)
Rin Matsuoka (FREE!)
Link (Legend of Zelda)- I remember deciding to RP him as a mute, so I got really good at describing actions with him
Dark Link (Legend of Zelda)
Hsien-Ko (Darkstalkers)
B.B. Hood (Darkstalkers)
Sesshomaru (Inuyasha)
Category 5- OC Misc (same as above, but OCs)
Xurik (Kingdom Hearts)- Based off of a story I wrote for FANFICTION.NET (so ages ago) And never put up... I also have to heavily edit it, my vocabulary had found out about words such as ‘damn’, ‘shit’, and ‘fuck’ and I thought it was cool to use it a lot. I’ll take a pic of that notebook one day. it is a MESS. URL- http://ashenxheart.tumblr.com/
Kirara (Naruto)- A ninja with a demon that had an amazing voice, used songs to buff and debuff her allies and enemies.
Ezekiel (Final Fantasy IX)- the soul that became Zidane, he is the part of Zidane that craves the blood of Gaia’s Citizens. Can use a scythe made from blood and has Blood Wings......... I was just out of high school and very depressed XD
Riboruba (Final Fantasy VIII and Kingdom Hearts)- She is the personification of Squall’s/Leon’s Gunblade! Fun Fact: Riboruba is the Japanese pronunciation of Revolver, to which that is the style of Gunblade Squall has.
Category 6- Main Characters that are heavily AU-d
AU Abridged Yami Bakura (YGOTAS and Kingdom Hearts)- Yes... a parody character, which is it’s on AU in a way, in an AU where he is a keyblade wielder................................ tada! I made this with my good friend millennium-hearts at a con, and because of this blog we are practically family. URL- http://thiefxkeybladerxbakura.tumblr.com/ Possible AUTOPLAY WARNING
AU Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)- He is basically Sephiroth, but winning, the world is pretty much dying/almost dead, so like.... Worst Case Scenario/Apocalypse AU
AU Nylocke (TOME) I’m putting this here because this is the Nylocke that is apart of the Omega Timeline. Where Nylocke had a twin brother (Nye is Colin-based on tta Nai’s name, and Martin- because Martin Billaney), who died. He is also the world’s best hacker, even better than the main villain of the blog, which was revealed once, but never by name. URL with Omega.
Hao Asakura- This was semi-based on the manga and the anime mixing. the story the blog was based off of is actually still on Fanfiction.Net i named Angel of the Devil (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6203556/1/Angel-of-the-Devil) Feel free to read it! There are 9 chapters!
Glitchy Red (Pokemon Creepy Pasta)- He was based off of many different piecemeal creepy pastas (Lost Silver, Pokemon Black, Strangled Red, Glitchy Red, small stories about the candle instead of flash, but used in a house it would burn it down, and the rope inside would make you hang yourself). This blog got me into KORN.
Category 7- Muses on Blogs that belong there, but are not the main reason people went to said blog
Xirra (TTA)- She is a re-purposed character with a whole new look to fit into TOME, and I used her on Remorse for Mistakes
Darkeyes (TTA)- Much Like Xirra, but never got onto the blog much.
Demon Eyes Kyo (Demon Eyes Kyo)- I read this manga in the 6th grade... it is fucking bloody and gory, so don’t look it up if you are weak stomached. I used him as the Guardian Spirit of Hao on his blog instead of the Fire Spirit.
Beelzemon (Digimon)- I had him on a blog I have yet to mention, but you’ll see why I haven’t yet, that blog is in a category all of its own~
Keldeo (Pokemon) He made a brief appearance on Kirb/Zetto blog... Chris named him Vic........ because voiced by Vic......
Muses I’d love to make, but I finally have self control so I won’t make them
Infinite (Sonic Forces)- Because he is my super floof boy and I must PROTECC
Qrow Branwen (RWBY)- I must protecc the birb boi too
THE LUKA-POCALYPSE I have had a lot of Luka’s in my time RPing, and I loved the name so much, I use it as my online pseudonym now... now you will learn where I get it from!
Luka Crosszeria (Uraboku)- This was the man I fell for, he is extremely loyal and protective of the one he loves through every reincarnation they have, and will do anything, even betray his own kind for love. So in a way, I can relate. I want to do the same with my friends and family and girlfriend. This is the blog Beelzemon is on.  URL- http://crosszeriaxbetrayer-blog.tumblr.com/ AUTOPLAY WARNING
Luka Crosszeria (Final Fantasy XIV)- She is my character from my favorite and most played MMO. And while she no longer has a blog, she does have an instagram! URL- https://www.instagram.com/luka_of_eorzea/
Luka Cross (OC- No other affiliation)- She is a girl with the power to summon elementals. From fire and ice spirits, to even the goddess of the moon. Her goal is to gain the power of Elder Summoning. Aldo Omega is in this AU as the guardian of the Library of Summoners, and he is an Elder Summon.
Luka (TOME)- She is the little sister of Xirra. A different kind of virus, hers is a contact epidemic virus that spreads through touch. She has her hands covered at all times, and is very shy, but is almost second to none in hand to hand combat, being at least 30 time stronger than her just 4 foot stature would lead you to believe. she is also a lolita that wears extremely tall boots, and yet she is still very short... like just under 5 foot short. She also dates a giant dragon... and she sounds like Hinata from Naruto... she is an actual baby that is months old

a tag game for gaymers noice!!! thanks for tagging me @mpregnate!
Favorite game from the last 5 years? hoooghgh i cannae just choose one! i love pokemon moon, undertale, night in the woods, stardew valley and overwatch, they’re all [chef’s kiss]
Most nostalgic game? pokemon gens 1 and 2. i’ve played them through hundreds of times and yet i always have pangs of nostalgic memories!
Game that deserves a sequel? dunno, i am generally wary of sequels and worry they won’t live up to the previous game. the exception being for long-running franchises that already have multiple games anyways
Game that deserves a remaster? if you asked me half a year ago i woulda said PS1 gen of spyro games, but those are being made now!
Favorite game series? GEE I WONDER WHAT IT COULD POSSIBLY BE! it’s pokemon, of course it is ;O
Favorite genre? idk. there isn’t a common link for the games i like, except that they fit specific niches rather than a genre!
Least favorite genre? military shooters are a genre i will never, EVER like, however.
Favorite song from a game? it’s a three-way tie between “National Park” from pokemon g/s/c, “There She Is” from portal 2, and every song from undertale is a banger so i’m just gonna go with “Metal Crusher”
Favorite character from a game? mae borowski is painfully relatable!
Favorite ship from a game? ALPHYNE!!!
Favorite voice actor from a game? i don’t know of game voice actors much :( reinhardt’s voice actor seems very nice though!
Favorite cutscene? wheatley’s heel turn
Favorite boss? GLaDOS ;)
First console? handheld: original gameboy, home console: sega mega drive
Current consoles? a gaming pc, 3ds, DS i, gameboy colour + SP, gamecube, n64, nes, sega mega drive, ps1 (literally the only recent console i own is my 3DS, the gamecube is the most recent home console i own jghfsjkblg i’ve kept all my old consoles over the years!)
Console you want? huurghghgh if the main series pokemon game looks good, i might have to save up for a switch!
Place from a game you want to visit? the alola region of pokemon looks so beautiful!
Ridiculous crossover that would never happen but would be super fun? overwatch pokemon AU, but then pokemon AUs work with almost every other franchise out there!
Book that would make a good game? i barely read in general, let alone fiction haha ;; though i think a hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy game could be fun, depending on how it’s structured!
Show/movie that would make a good game? listen. i’m a predictable bastard. a welcome to night vale rpg could be SO fuckin fun if done right!
Games you want to play? the stanley parable is next on my list once i’m finished with okami!
Have you ever gotten 100% completion in a game? yup!
Have you cried over a game? i ugly cry at undertale every single time. i just need to think about the last fight on pacifist run or hear certain songs from the OST and i just tear up :’)
What power-up or ability would you want in real life? i want frisk’s good-willed DETERMINATION!!!
uuuhhh idk who to tag! @hushpupper @whokilledcecilpalmer @goldenslaughterer @deerfolx @pomegranateoctopus @squawks @ghostcrebs @puffbadgersandbees uuhhh idk i’m worried i’ll miss out on folk so if we’re mutuals and you wanna do this, you can say i tagged you in!!!

Aside from Dragon Age, what other video games do you like?
*deep breath* my dude (i say, in the most gender neutral way) *pulls out all my games and lays them on the counter*
RPG’s (mostly played on XBOX or Nintendo consoles)
Mass Effect Trilogy - ME was my first Bioware game and changed MY ACTUAL LIFE™. i played the entire trilogy 3 whole times before i even picked up Dragon Age Origins (which i also played 3 times…)
Mass Effect Andromeda- sure it had its flaws but Vetra Nyx is my actual wife and I love all the teammates and it’s a pretty game and the dialogue is so funny i just love this game ok
Fable 2, Fable 3 - before finding Bioware games LionHead Studio’s Fable games were my RPG of choice and they, especially Fable 2, still have a big place in my heart and in my replay-ability list
Fallout 4 - I’m such a softie when it comes to companions so the “companions can permanently die if they go down”gave me mass i’ve anxiety and prevented me from playing the earlier Fallout games but I really enjoyed 4 (plus it was the first Fallout with romance options which is what I’m all about)
SWTOR- Star Wars the Old Republic (just recently)
FFXV - I came for gorgeous boy band with cool weapons and was caught off guard by TRAGEDY AND ANGST
Divinity Original Sin: just started this a month ago and I love it, great dialogue and creativity for an old-fashion RPG
More: Monster Hunter World, Kingdom Hearts, Borderlands/Borderlands 2/Borderlands Pre-sequel, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon (probably my first RPGs and I played on Gameboy then Wii lol), Legend of Zelda Games, Kirby (just, most Nintendo games)
Non RPG’s-
Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 (my favorite games when I actually want to shoot things with friends), House of the Dead, Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare (i used to be a HUGE zombie geek in high school)
Overwatch (a little bit…i suck lol but I love the characters and have met some of the voice actors. I Mercy mained),
League of Legends (just during the first 2 and half seasons back in 2012-2014. I kinda dated a pro league player who got me interested. i Annie/Soraka/Sona main)
Other: ARK, Minecraft (a looong time ago when it was still in early stages), American McGee’s Alice and Madness Returns (beautiful psychological horror-action game), Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly (another great horror, played on my friend’s Playstation 2), Pom Gets Wifi (hilarious and cute, short computer game about a dog trying to find Wifi in Heaven)
Games I’ve tried/played but couldn’t get into: Fortnight, Halo/Halo 2 (i liked the story, im not big on multiplayer), Ace Combat (i like these games but i’m just trash at any driving or flight simulators), Gears of War, any Call of Duty Game :/
Games that have been on my To-Play list forever but I haven’t got to yet: Bioshock trilogy, Assassin’s Creed series,
——
I’m probably leaving out some but those are the ones off the top of my head. SORRY for the essay, thanks for asking :)

Prompts
Character
Character A has been stealing from another thief, Character B, for a better half of the year and it never stopped being amusing.
The duo was unlikely. Character B was a young man with a wise, old soul. Character A was a hopeful man with a child-like heart that had seen far too much over the years.
Character A is a time traveller who’s been traveling for so long they can’t remember what time they came from. Character B tries to help them.
Character A is a dragon who loves music and kidnaps young men asking their betrotheds to sing them a song as ransom. Character B is their newest beloved.
Managing Character B’s temper would be so much easier if there weren’t so many people trying his patience, and Character A just happens to be their biggest annoyance yet.
Character A wishes they were braver, stronger, smarter. Character A wished for all these things without knowing they were already brave, strong, and smart and Character B is going to prove it.
Character B is rude in every sense of the word and impatient to a fault. They were the kind of person to shove “lesser people” into a trash bin if it meant entertainment. Things change when Character A knocks them from their pedestal and they realize their actions have consequences they aren’t sure they can fix.
Character B has a tendency to apologize for anything, even if they have no reason to and Character A is getting sick and tired of it.
Character A collects stones and arranges them on their shelf by color.
Character B was always dirty and cut up with wraps over their bruised knuckles and Character A just wants to figure out why.
Dialogue
“I don’t know what’s happening but I love it.”
“So you’re the guy who saved my life?”
“If you could stop collecting angry children and turning them into vigilantes, that’d be great.”
“That was definitely not just the wind.”
“Oh yes, I’m super friendly. All bark, no bite.”
“He had lots of love to give and no one to give it to.”
“Stop asking me if I’m alright. My last answer was ‘annoyed’, why would it change any time soon?”
“Why do you always disturb me when I’m in the zone? It’s like you just know.”
“I’m happy when I have freedom to do whatever I want, not stuck here with all these obligations.”
“Look, it’s not my fault I died.”
“The ambulance was painted black.”
“The lights sizzled and burned out, one by one.”
“His eyes were hollow and dark, a strange quirk to follow his dazzling smile.”
“My daughter always said that I had to be quicker than quick.”
“And so his meal turned against him.“
“The creature continued to softly sing.”
“The only thing that stood out of the rubble of the old stadium was a single row of seats.”
“The crowd cheered as the man fell down to his knees, screaming for his child.”
“He took the record off the player but the song continued to play.”
“A person walked in, clad head to toe in yellow, carrying a large suitcase.”
“He could swear he saw the gargoyle move.”
“It’s not like I’m starved for attention or anything. I just need to be acknowledged every few minutes so I don’t have an existential crisis.”
“Beautifully crafted stick figures, just for you, at a low cost of nineteen payments of nine thousand dollars.”
“Don’t look at me, this is not my fault.”
“Look, I don’t particularly like being a cold-blooded killer, but it is my only marketable skill.”
“For a self-proclaimed god among mortals, he seemed awfully bothered by a little knife in the ribs.”
“Are you serious? You want your last words to be a pun? It wasn’t even a good one. I’m giving you another shot.”
“Hey, remember that ‘if I ever see you again, I’ll be morally and legally obligated to kill you conversation’ we had a while back?”
“Sorry, I’m not sure what to say. Usually someone’s told me to shut up by this point.”
“That’s the first time I’ve died in a while. Guess I was overdue.”
“I asked for a helpful opinion, not…whatever that was.”
“You can tell me anything and I wouldn’t judge you. Probably.”
“This was fun. Let’s cause more chaos again, later.”
“You lucked out. If I hadn’t been there, I don’t want to think about what could have happened.”
“I was trying my hardest to mind my own business, but you’ve really done it now. I have to know.”
“Oooh, so mysterious. Look at you, so tough! So cold! I’m intimidated, really.”
“I was going to thank you for your help, but I did most of that.”
“How did you not notice you had a fever?”
“I know you said we were going to focus on me and my problems, but how about we don’t?”
“Disappointment comes in many shapes and sizes, you know? Mine comes in the shape of you!”
“I can’t believe you’re making me do this. It’s humiliating.”
“People see your scowl and run for the hills. I can’t have this when my guests come over.”
“Next time, when you try to kiss me, please don’t go for my eye. My lips are better.”

rules: answer the questions and tag some blogs you’d like to get to know better
nicknames: Mei (from my usual online identity) or Maxie (my main OC)
time right now: 09:15
last thing i googled: fisto I got stuck trying to find Fisto on FNV so I was looking up where to find him XD
fave music artist: Varies depending on my mood but Goldfrapp and JT Machinima song stuck in my head: Goldfrapp - Human last movie i watched: Carry On Girls last tv show i watched: I don’t usually watch many TV shows but I think the last one was Tattoo Fixers. what i’m wearing now: What I passed out in last night.
BONUS - what I should be wearing: Probably something else LOL when i created this blog: I can’t remember exactly but the blog itself is around 2-3 years old (It was converted from a disused blog I remembered the password for). But it’s been in its current form for around 1 year now?
i post: It’s a clusterfuck of things. Mostly Fallout content but there is some occasional gay porn posting (reason I advise being 18+ to follow me), cat porn, music and other interesting things.
do i have other blogs: Technically yes but they are very disused.
do i get asks regularly: Not really. I only get the odd ask here and there.
why did i choose my url: Mostly goes back to Maxie’s solo verse when he was travelling around the Mojave a lot. Even though his main verse is in the Commonwealth now XD
gender: Non-binary with slight male lean
hogwarts house: Hufflepuff (because badgers) or Slytherin (because sneks)
pokemon team: Main Pokemon games, I’d have to go Team Magma. Pokemon Go, Team Valor.
fave color: Black, red and purple (YOU CANNOT MAKE ME CHOOSE JUST ONE)
average hours of sleep: 6-7 usually
favorite characters: Arcade Gannon, Nick Valentine, Hancock, Preston Garvey, Ulysses, Christine Royce, Magnolia, RJ MacCready, Three Dog, Sarah Lyons (all from Fallout), Jesse McCree (Overwatch), GLaDOS and Wheatley (Portal), Gordon Freeman (Half-Life).
dream job: It’ll never happen but I’d like to work for Bethesda. <.<
number of blankets i sleep with: 1
If you want to do it then I tagged you :P

Play Time (D.VA/Sombra)
A/N: No smut this time, just some stress relief / playing around with voices.
“This wasn’t easy to get, you know.” She held a thick plastic case between two hands, fiddling with it. Hana’s fingernail ran over the bumpy edge, rattling and scraping. “I had to have my dad snail mail it to me.”
“Of course, kid,” Sombra said. “I owe you one.” Sombra moved to take it, but as she did Hana flinched back.
Sombra paused with her hand outreached, clawtips hovering within grasping distance. “Having second thoughts?”
“...Maybe.”
Sombra’s face tightened, lips pressing firmly together to try and fight off a smile. She failed miserably, smirk coiling up like a snake.
This was ridiculous. If Sombra was going to run off with anything, it wouldn’t be an old game from a system no company built anymore. Then again, Hana could distinctly see in her mind’s eye a vision of Sombra sailing away with everything-- all of Overwatch’s secrets, and her favorite game, adding insult to injury.
“I’m only going to borrow it so I can make a copy."
“I know!” Hana pushed the game into her hands. “Just bring it back quickly, okay?”
The woman saluted her with the square disk, winking. “Te lo prometo, mami. But more importantly, we need to discuss the price of your help.”
Again, alarm bells started ringing.
None of them were sure how this happened, to be frank. One day, Sombra appeared in their life, offering services and information in exchange for clemency. Any and all attempts to capture her had always failed, and here she was, deciding before they did that Overwatch would win the upcoming conflicts.
In any case, getting rid of her was almost harder than trying to catch her.
(Sombra often mentioned something about stray cats, half of it in Spanish too quick and low for Hana to understand.)
“I’m not selling it,” she firmly reminded Sombra, about to snatch the disc back. But Sombra turned, tutting at her and waving her finger.
“Not what I mean. You did me a solid, now I owe you one.”
She opened her arms out wide, almost taunting as she vanished into a haze of glitching air.
“I’ll leave you to think about how you want me to pay you back.”
Hana lunged forward, waving her hands through the spot where Sombra had disappeared. But her fingers combed through it and found nothing but air, and she was left quietly fuming.
This cryptic motherfucker!
No more, Hana decided firmly, heading back to her room. It doesn’t matter if Sombra always had the shiny versions of her favorite pokemon with perfect IVs. No more trades!
True to her word, though, Sombra returned the game as quickly as possible. It appeared on Hana’s desk the next day.
And when she booted up her computer to play Starcraft, she found an inbox full of heart emojis and skull ascii art. Under a particularly, viciously long string of that, Sombra attached a link to an emulator she’d created “so they could finally play together.”
Hana was disgusted. Keeping up the cutesy act while streaming was one thing, but Sombra was near-constantly theatrical.
“Can you grow up?” she muttered under her breath, deleting the emails.
Then her inbox pinged again, the low bloop custom noise of an incoming message that just said one word
No
And another ascii sugar skull.
Hana unplugged her mic.
It was a bit of an open secret on base that Sombra was trying to break into their classified records. Clandestinely at first, so as to not tip her off, they upped the security. Then she escalated. And so the arms race began, and by the end of the year Sombra was satisfied that Overwatch was impenetrable.
Still, she liked to poke at them from time to time. If they defeated her, then Overwatch was safe. If it wasn’t, then Sombra had something to dangle over their heads as they scrambled to patch the leak.
She won either way.
Winston in particular found it to be a source of unexpected inspiration. Hana could hear them, casually chatting over which one of them would prevail during that day’s scheduled cyber attack.
“Come on Athena, cut me a little slack. You know I’ve got a soft spot for AI with sexy voices.”
“Winston, please tell Miss Sombra that flattery will not persuade me to lower my firewalls.”
“Admit it. You liked it when I was inside of you.”
Winston pushed the monitor away from Sombra as though that actually did anything. He spoke softly, sounding almost heartbroken in his chastisement. "...Sombra.”
“Whaaat?” Delighted, Sombra grinned, a big full smile that showed all her teeth. “I have to be thorough. If someone can hack us by seducing Athena, we need to know about it!”
Leaning over on Winston’s desk, Sombra lowered her voice to a purr.
“And Athena, have I mentioned that you could literally just spout code at me and I’d be putty in your hands?”
“I don’t have hands, Sombra.”
Rolling her eyes, Hana knocked on Winston’s open office door. He swiveled around in his chair at her approach, giving her a short wave. With his foot, he opened up on of his desk drawers and pulled out a hunk of what looked to be scrap metal, faintly flickering with inlaid lights.
“Is this what you had to show me?” Hana wondered, picking it up and examining it from side to side. “Is this really supposed to be an improvement on my shield matrix?”
“I wouldn’t offer you a faulty product, Hana.” He frowned deeply. “Especially if it might put you in danger.”
Sombra laughed under her breath at that, though Hana didn’t see anything funny about it. The older woman ambled over to the other corner of Winston’s office, making a big show of examining the photosets and knick knacks on his bookshelf as if she wasn’t in here every day.
“Still.” Hana tore her eyes away from her to focus on her friend. “You have no sense of style, Winston.”
“Tell me about it,” Athena said.
Winston glanced between the two of them. “I’m feeling distinctly outnumbered here.”
“Women,” Sombra said knowingly, pulling up her holovid to peruse through what looked to be fifteen different blogs. Hana recognized a few of them as conspiracy websites just by the font color alone. “Can’t live without em. Can’t press the mute button. Need help installing that?”
“I think I know how to install new features onto my own M.E.K.A.,” Hana said.
Sombra blew out her cheeks with a huff. “This is what I mean, Winston. Do you hear this?” Before Hana could question her, Sombra continued. “She’s always like this. Never asks for help.” She waved at the new hardware in Hana’s hands. “Unless you’re a scientist, evidently.”
“I ask people I trust for help,” Hana clarified. “Thank you Winston. I’ll let you two get back to...” she let her gaze drop from Athena to Sombra. “...Whatever it was you were up to before I arrived.”
When she turned and left, Sombra followed her outside. The woman was light on her feet, nearly bouncing around until she maneuvered herself in front of Hana. “Hey, hey, hey,” she said, one hand on Hana’s shoulder to halt her. “No need to be so pissy with me. I thought we were getting along pretty well. What happened?”
“You hacked into my microphone,” Hana said stiffly, holding the new shield to her chest.
Sombra waved it aside. Her shoulders rolled, neck cracking as she arched it from side to side. “Is that it? That was like three months ago.”
“I don’t take breaches of my privacy lightly. Now get out of my way.”
Sombra’s grip tightened. With a loud slam, she shoved Hana up against the wall, free hand pinching her cheeks together and holding her face up.
“There you go again,” Sombra said with a faint smile, eyes narrowed. “How am I supposed to pay you back when you act like you don’t need anybody else?” Hana wrenched her head free, speechless with fury. Sombra let her, only to trail her palm down the center of Hana’s chest. “Maybe I wanted you to hold it over my head a little, huh?”
Shoving past her, Hana left back the way she had came, livid, and flushing red all the way up to the tips of her ears.
