Talking more about The Four Chimes AU because yes

so there’s been an interesting surge of apocalypse four (though most people call them vecna four) content recently, which i am very much thrilled to see

in line with that, i’m gonna share a bit more on the au that has been built from the ground up ever since last year, having definite arcs and various aus and sub aus of it already

the four chimes au

this universe has been mine and @lumaxramblings 's blood, sweat, and tears for the past year, ever since July 14

i've made a few posts about it, and shared some snippets on it in some wip weds and weekends, but i never fully explained the universe beyond the little bubble of the discord thread in the discord server im in

so let me explain now. we know this already but the apocalypse four are vecna's four sacrifices to make the four gates, but in this au, they're not just the four sacrifices. they're the four chimes too.

you see, vecna had a vision. he had remembered the story of the four horsemen of the apocalypse from a time victor creel had brought him and alice to the Church to listen

the four horsemen of the apocalypse, he had mused...and inspiration struck him.

he had a vision, and he saw it through.

and he got them all. he won.

and now he has his four horsemen of the apocalypse, or in this universe rather...his four chimes of catastrophe.

you all know who they are, but the question is, who is who? well, as @lumaxramblings has said in that fateful ask that started this whole universe in the first place, it would be:

chrissy = famine

fred = death

patrick = war

max = pestilence

as for the reason, canon itself gives some details and evidence to point out who would be who. (tw ed mention on chrissy's part)

chrissy is famine because of her eating disorder and her "hunger" to be free in a sense. fred is death because of his survivor's guilt and all the constant grave and death visuals. patrick is war because of his home life and how he's always in constant conflict. and finally, max is pestilence because of her thought process on being something that plagues others...and vecna!lucas' "you are sick."

there's quite a few more points that can be brought up, along with how some of the canon scenes actually fuel this universe, but i'll talk about that another time

so now, vecna's sacrifices are no longer who they were before everything.

now, they are his soldiers, his little experiments, his four chimes of catastrophe.

and just as they had been broken, they will now be the ones to break the world.

...

(but then...you remember, the apocalypse 4 weren't the only ones who got caught in vecna's curse and vision.

you know who else did?

nancy wheeler.

and in the four horsemen of the apocalypse lore, wasn't there something going on with the white rider of the horsemen? the fact that...there's a bit of confusion on whether the white rider is pestilence...or conquest?

...in another universe, nancy is conquest, the fifth chime of catastrophe.

an incomplete chime.

...but maybe that's a story for another day...)

i actually had started the fic of this already, but it's been a few months since i've updated it, oof :")

anyway, that's a bit of an explanation on the four chimes au.

it kind of becomes a s5 alternate universe in a sense? finnthony and i already have an idea on what happens all throughout the main story, complete with arcs already lmao (and that's not even talking about the sub-aus, like the conquest au...)

its lots of angst though, lemme tell you

i dont want to reveal too much but there is a lot of platonic and romantic dynamics here

platonic being the party's friendship (heh), the teens' friendship, best friend soulmates stobin ofc, and all other platonic relationships that can be connected with each member of this ragtag, traumatized group

for romance, we got lumax (with future elumax), byler, duzie, ronance, stongyle (aka steve x jonathan x argyle), jopper, and...well. a few others too, but i'll be keeping those quiet for now.

i’ll likely post more stuff at some point, to get it out here lmao and because this au is just <3

job/boyce (what’s their official ship name anyways?): 7/10 they were adorable you can’t lie. i mean jopper was always endgame for me but bob and joyce were so cute together they would’ve been great and as incredibly sad as bobs death was, i’m glad that we never had to see joyce break up with him bc that would’ve been painful

ranking four queer stranger things ships on how likely i think they are to become cannon!

Ships in question: ronance, byler, jargyle, steddie

from least likely to most likely

note: i’m more focusing on the thematic and meta stuff to determine whether it gonna happen or not

4. Jargyle

i mean, it’s cute, but there is very little evidence for this happening. the only reason i could see the writers doing it would be to give jonathan another love interest after a likely jancy breakup. I mean, neither of them seem the most straight to me, but not in a way that makes it seem that their relationship could be anything more than platonic. besides, if half of the ships on this list end up being canon, when you add it to the other canon ships, then adding jargyle would really make it a bit cramped in the romance department

3. Ronance

the chemistry is there! nancy and robin are looking at eachother in those posters, the same way all the other (basically) canon ships are. it might be a thing relating to getting the other person unvecna’d, but then it’s kinda weird that jopper is doing it. also, i feel like nancy being queer could also lead to some actual sibling bonding with you-know-who. good vibes here all around, plus it’s one of my favorite w/w ships ever!

however, there are some things that make me less sure it’ll happen. first of all, vickie. the only reasons i see robin and vickie not happening is A. vickie dies (lame), or B. vickie doesn’t like girls (unlikely). from the way it’s been building up it’s nigh impossible some sort of romantic confrontation (or something like that) between them won’t happen, and it would be kinda weird if it was built of that robin liked vickie only for her to end up with nancy, unless vickie dies, which would be not very cool (but i could see happening in vol 2).

second of all, i have a feeling nancy is gonna die, if not in vol2 then in season 5. but that’s an entire other post, so i won’t say much else. i’d really like this ship to happen, but i won’t be surprised if it doesn’t.

2. Steddie (bisexual steve)

steddie just makes sense for a lot of reasons! steve having an arc where he realizes he’s bisexual has been set up SO well, it works perfectly with his character, it would be a shame if it were wasted. eddie is heavily gay/queer coded, making it perfect for steve to realize things about himself. plus, it would be perfect for the kids to have someone they already look up to be queer, and make them more comfortable with themselves. im about 75% sure that steve is bisexual.

the only problem here is that eddie has some massive death flags in vol2. i really don’t want this to happen, but i can’t ignore the signs. but if he DOES survive vol2, then i believe it’s extremely likely we’ll get steddie in s5. if he doesn’t live, then it’s possible that steve could end up with jonathan, bc of the likely jancy breakup and the fact that it would be poor writing if stancy got back together. i think we’ll for sure see some queer steve stuff in s5.

1. Byler

it’s happening 100%. i have never been this confident in a queer ship (or any ship for that matter) before. i am so confident in byler happening that i am going to schedule a post on july 1st celebrating it. there is no doubt in my mind. too me it’s so obvious it’s happening that i feel like it’s redundant to explain to anybody who’s seen the show why. there are so many reasons (both external and internal) why byler is going to happen that im not even going to list them, just watch the show.

the question is not IF byler is happening, but WHEN byler is happening. In my opinion it would be better if they are established by the end of vol2, not only to haze out the homophobes early, but to give the relationship time to grow so we can see them as a fully fledged couple in s5 before it ends. there are other reasons, but those are the main ones. however i could also see the writers not having them get together yet, and only confirm that they both have feelings for eachother so they can get together early/mid s5 and we can watch them navigate a new relationship and what it means.

Okay I know I bitch about season 4 a lot so here are some things I actually liked:

I like the basketball/dice rolling mash-up. Felt like classic ST. I like that they remind us that the highest stakes in the kids’ lives should be D&D and winning the big game rather than interdimensional war.

I like that the big bad comes directly from the opening campaign like season 1.

I like that Max gets a lot of the spotlight bc she deserves it.

I like that this season gives Lucas more to do and that he’s amazing at it. Ditto Erica.

I like Jonathan having a little buddy since he’s literally had no friends since S1.

Same goes for Nancy. She needs a friend and Ronance friendship is one of the best things ever. Bonus if they fall in love later but honestly having a platonic friend won’t hurt her.

I like that Jonathan joins the Mike Wheeler hate club.

I like that Murray gets to keep his little Russian pal this time #justiceforalexei. I hope they’re very happy together.

I like that they brought back the bikes and added bonus older kids on bikes. I literally squealed at the shot that flipped upside down and mirrored all eight of them on the bikes. More bikes plz.

I like that they found Reefer Rick via video rental archives. Very classic ST, very Scooby Doo. I like that the show points out that these kids figure out mysteries not because they have resources or money or adult help (which they don’t) but bc they’re clever.

I like that it was pretty. For the most part all the shots were really visually stunning. There were def times when cinematography outshone writing by… a lot.

I like that Dustin went from no dad in season one to two dads by season four.

I liked every single moment the actors improvised and honestly all of their performances were top notch. No notes.

I like that one of Hopper’s useless deputies is now the chief. It was a good choice since he is slightly less useless than the other one.

I like that El blows up a helicopter, continuing the grand ST tradition of not being afraid to kill people who suck/are trying to harm children and having no moral back and forth about it. Blowing up a helicopter full of military child killers is morally good.

I like that the writers were like “you’ve seen Steve and Dustin dynamic, now get ready for Steve and Max dynamic!” I like that he fills the role of the big brother she should have had rather than the shitty one she got.

I like that Papa dies and there’s absolutely no question about it this time. He is dead 5sure. I like that El doesn’t forgive him or give him absolution in death. One thing this show really gets right is that one sacrificial act doesn’t erase a lifetime of abuse. The show gets that with Billy and with Brenner. Five stars.

Similarly, I like how complicated Max’s grief is. Of course you feel survivor’s guilt over someone close to you who died for you, but of course you have mixed feelings when that person was a racist and abusive asshole to you, your friends, and your boyfriend. Of course you feel a little relieved that your tormentor is dead, and of course you feel guilty for feeling that way. So many shows are guilty of “redeeming” a character through death without any actual change or accountability and I’m glad we don’t get that here.

I like Robin. She is everything to me.

I like Eddie. See above. I am not immune to white boy of the month especially when he’s like *gestures at him* that.

I like Jopper. I feel it has been extremely well handled from the first hints in season one to the unrequited pining from Hopper in season two (that he never makes her problem, he supports her) to their sexually charged bickering in season three to her saving his fucking life this season… it’s amazing and I’m so glad the parents of the group are finally together.

Aaaaaaaaaand that’s it. But honestly that’s more than I thought there would be when I sat down to write this list.

wish list for s5

will (and possibly max??) having powers and to use them alongside his sister el to defeat evil. i keep imagining a frame of all three of them with their hands out doing that yell as they take down the big bad of s5

max waking up, but also being loved and accepted for her likely permanent blindness and the duffer bros not pussying out on giving her a permanent disability

tbh i don't give a shit about the russian stuff so if they want to wrap all that up they can

jopper getting their happy ending if possible

some sort of epilogue about their adult lives? does lumax have kids? what careers did all the surviving characters choose? is nancy a famous journalist now? i need to know

doesn't have to be a happy ending necessarily but if they pull a got s8 i will literally never forgive them

Jeezus, is it a million and one degrees in here, or am I trapped in a Russian Prison with Enzo?

See, that’s funny because you’d think a Russian prison would be cold, but then there’s a hot DILF in there.

Question number one: ok yeah enemies to lovers but has anyone ever tried “helpful prison guard to sexy cell mate?” Is that a trope? Can we make it one?

Now you’re probably asking yourself, does this crazy bitch ship Hopper and Enzo?

And the answer is yes, of course I do, but not in an “I’m gonna be mad if this show doesn’t make this cannon” sort of way. I know nobody is queer-baiting me here. If anyone is queer-baiting me it’s me. I’m very good at it, thank you very much. I can imagine incredibly straight men are in love when they’re on screen together in my eyeline for too long. That said, Ronance, Steddie, Byler, and Jargyle: make it canon or we riot. [How fucking dumb was it when they just threw a random chick at Argyle to show the audience he’s got a big case of the not-gays? Who cares. This show loves smashing straights against each other. Show me some bi 80’s teens or shut the fuck up. Also, watch out, everybody, cause the Mileven Mafia is about to come gunning for me: I don’t give one single fuck about Mike and El’s relationship and I never have. El’s busy, guys. She’s got a whole “facing down an inter-dimensional existential threat/I’ve got two dads but one is abusive and one’s in a gulag” thing going on. Fuckin’ don’t make her date a boy right now.]

Now, back to that gulag. Ah, Enzo. Dimitri “Enzo” Antonov. My imaginary boyfriend that someone else imagined for me, who is never going to date my other imaginary boyfriend from Season 1 [on TV, at least. In head canon it’s already happening and you can’t stop it] for two reasons: A) because obviously Jopper is a thing and the writers aren’t going to suddenly drop that just because we got season 2 of the gay pirates. (But wouldn’t that be WILD? What if they had shot two versions of the ending and they held back Vol. 2 so they could use the gay ending if Our Flag Means Death got renewed? Would the internet survive the aftermath?) And B) my two boyfriends can never date because canonically Season 1 Hopper died in Season 3 when the Duffer Brothers got amnesia and started telling David Harbor to just scream at everyone in every scene. RIP, baby. I still love you.

(Her name is Azelia Moondragon, she has three different color eyes, she can change genitalia at will, she has an IQ of 3.6 billion, and and she’s more powerful than the Mind Flayer, Vecna,El, and eight demogorgons put together . . . Nah, just fuckin’ with you. Her name’s Kate Kauffman and she’s a 38 year old therapist from New Jersey with a secret drinking problem.)

Listen, my ice duke, my proud Siberian wolf, my shot of Svayak with a spoonful of caviar, we both know you could have an AMAZING arc in Season 5. We both know you could wind up snatched by the US government and forced to remain at the lab in Hawkins while the feds scramble to cover up the existence of the Demogorgon you saw, that you could have a moving side mission to bring your son to the US illegally while you help your bestest pal Hop and his annoying girlfriend [no, she’s fine, it’s fine, I like her, they’re good together, not all the hot men want to kiss each other, and that’s ok] parent their sulky teens and save the damn world.

We both know you could fall madly, passionately in love with the mysterious new psychologist that the lab hires to provide you and the other Demogorgon survivors “trauma and readjustment therapy,” but who has secretly been tasked with wiping your memory so you can never go back to Russia and tell the world what you know. We’re both well aware that after she succumbs to your arctic-foxlike charm, Dr. Kate Kauffman could never bare to wipe your memories, that she would instead confess that she is not a psychiatrist, she is in fact a powerful psychic, a subject of the experiment that preceded Hawkins Lab, that in a fit of tears as she laid bare her secrets she would lift up her sleeve to reveal the mark on her wrist, faded, but perfectly legible: “000,” and then as you took her in your arms and told me no harm has been done, all is forgiven, you’re here to protect me now, the two of us would begin to float into the . . .

*Ahem* At any rate . . .

My beautiful near-winter ermine, we both know you have so much potential as a character. But it’s time for both of us to face the harsh, cold facts, so much colder and more harsh than the winters of your beloved homeland.

Dimitri, my darling, here are the reasons we both know you’re definitely not making it out of Season 4 alive:

1) You’ve got a son to get back to. ROOKIE mistake, my love. I’m frankly astonished at you. And you revealed it RIGHT before the big monster battle? I mean, why don’t you just do a big monologue about how you two are going to open up an awesome rabbit farm when you get home? Do you WANT to die? Baby, I volunteer for a suicide hotline. Next time you feel compelled to confess touching details about yourself the night before you face a deadly threat right at the end of a season arc, call me. We can talk it through. You have so many reasons to live!

And of course, that is why you are going to die.

2) Where is Mikhail’s mom?

Now, this one’s interesting. Arguments COULD be made this could go either way.

The facts are these:

You’ve made zero mention of your wife in all this “reflecting upon our lives as we stare into the gaping maw of death” talk. MAYBE your wife divorced you, and that’s why you don’t like to talk about her. Seems unlikely, given Hop got you to punch him by implying she was disloyal. (Although we can’t rule out the possibility that that remark hit just a little too close to home. Perhaps your drive to be seen as a hero of the Motherland in the eyes of your son stems from a need to demonstrate you are the REAL daddy, a bigger, braver, cooler man than the stepfather his mother left you for? Interesting. We can discuss this again in your next session, Dimitri. That is, if we even do any talking next time . . . I mean, what? Huh? Oh! Right, the thingy. Yeah, sorry, I uh, got distracted by the . . . Nevermind.)

ANYWAY, the much more likely answer is, Mikhail’s mommy is deadzo. You are not only a DILF, you are a hot widower, and the show runners are saving this juicy detail for the inevitable “calm before the coming storm,” beat, the moment just before your heroic sacrifice during the final battle or the crazy escape sequence, when Hop says something cheesy like “You’ve got to rest up. Tomorrow you’re gonna need all your strength to hug that wife and kid of yours.”

And you’ll stare just left of camera with your gorgeous, steely gaze, and you’ll say in your low, haunted voice “I will need strength for only one hug. I am all the family my son has left.”

BOOM. You’re dead. The emotional stakes just got higher and all the Duffer Brothers have to do now is fry ‘em up in the bacon grease of tragic irony and serve them to the audience with a side of mashed dream-potatoes as we weep for you. Now your son is an orphan! And Season 5 has a ready-made cute Russian to bring in and fatten with all our collective emotional investment before the final slaughter. [Fun fact: the third ritual sacrifice of a beloved fictional Russian in a series opens an actual real portal to a hell-dimension in our world!!! The last one opened on January 15, 1968, when the finale of The Man From U.N.C.L.E was broadcast! You look back and see how young they look compared to now and you’re like “yikes! I know the actors were actually twenty, but please! No more babies fucking, thanks!” Glad they stopped doing that shit. If I had to watch El and Mike fuck I’d hurl, for more reasons than one. Ok, well, Antonov, sweetheart, do you remember Alexi? He was this really cute, funny, enjoyable Russian sidekick they had last season. We had so much fun with him! At first, we thought he was this bad Russian scientist who was going to help screw over our beloved friends, but in the end, he actually teamed up with them! We all really came to love Alexi! He was kind of a fan favorite! People wrote long, rambling things with a lot of weird jokes in them about him on Tumblr. And then . . .

Sound familiar?

Call me a pessimist, but I just don’t think the Duffer Bros can pass up an opportunity to murder a beloved fictional Russian. Besides, it has been long since the gate was opened. The Ravening One cries out for more tender flesh from our own corporeal plane. Its inessence rumbles, its dark mindlessness bends upon our dimension with all the fell, unfeeling intent and obsession of otherworldly instincts. The Duffer Brothers are thinking of doing a 60’s throwback for their next show, and Guy Ritchie is slated to direct the first seance, I mean episode! . . . Plus they’re like so attentive to details, they’d never kill three Russians on accident! Or forget their birthdays.

Dimitri “Enzo” Nikolai Andronic Niklosky Antonov, we could play this little game of denial, dream this little dream of happiness, torture ourselves a little while longer with what can never be. Let us let go once and for all of our wistful longing for all the dopamine-explosion moments as you interact and bond and integrate with the entire Stranger Things ensemble, the giddy spectacle of novel combination after novel recombination of beloved characters, that heady right of passage of exploring increasingly bizarre pairings and group dynamics all new ST characters who survive their first season are treated to, until the dread Season 5 finale ultimately tears them all assunder as the eldritch gods of the Upsidedown inevitably triumph and wipe all away with one mighty, slimy tendril of inter-dimensional horror.

All I can say, Enzipie, Dimipants, Antobutt, is that it’s been one hell of a ride. You may be just a corrupt guard of some remote, snowy prison in the middle of nowhere, betrayed by his crooked accomplice, imprisoned alongside his former captive, escaped with the aide of unlikely allies, and doomed by the conventions of narrative drama to die, but you melted my heart.

At least we get to keep Eddie! . . . Right? Duffers? DUFFERS?!

Not trying to sound annoying here, but I said many times that this play was going to most likely include a love story between Bob's sister and Henry while people disagreed and attacked me. Now it's revealed that what I predicted was true, now some people just seem to not accept this reality despite the reveal being obvious.

I also think that it's pretty likely that the writers will connect the story to the play and revolve the story around it by conforming that Henry wants to take revenge on the town and on Joyce, Bob, and Hopper because of something they 'did' in the past from Henry's perspective. Maybe they caused Patty's death accidentally and that's what made Henry be angry at town and Joyce, Bob, and Hopper. That may be the reason why Henry wants to take revenge on the town and Jopper + Bob. This also most likely includes Will's kidnapping. And it actually would explain a lot of things, if Henry wants to kinda take revenge, it explains why the Byers are the only family in the town who seem to get targeted in S1, why the MF/Demogorgon seems to not be fond of Joyce and was angry at her, why Will was the one who got targeted twice, and why Bob ended up getting killed, etc.

We may not like this story personally, but let's be real guys... it's very clear and likely that this is where the writers are going for in terms of the overall story and the play's plot.

Is the discourse really that intense right now? I barely see anyone talking about the play

I agree that Patty may play a part in Henry's downfall, but I don't think it'll be the only reason. Maybe just the start of it. The "memory that makes you sad but angry" and he starts spiraling as one bad thing happens to him after another. Patty, his mom, Brenner, all of it.

And you know, I've been wondering about this Alice thing as well. Why wouldn't she have been cast? It's so weird. It got me thinking, was Alice adopted? Did they try to "replace" Henry with a happier child? I dunno random thought that's been swimming in my brain.

Anyway, I still don't agree that Bob, Joyce, or Hopper will be directly involved int his or that Henry has a personal vendetta against them in particular. The Byers weren't the only ones targeted in town, only Will seemed to have been hand picked. Otherwise, the Demogorgon only cared about food and El. It chased or killed everyone else.

In season 2, yet again, it didn't give a shit about anything other than Will and only started caring about everyone else when it got burned and decided to kill anyone in Will's way.

In season 3, it only cared about El. Everyone else involved was meat food.

In season 4, he only cared about his 4 targets so that he could open a gate and kill everyone.

Imo, it's unnecessary to center this conflict on Vecna getting revenge against Joyce and Hopper specifically. I truly think Henry hates the whole town and everyone in it, including them.

I think Joyce, Hopper, and Bob probably witnessed what happened that upset Henry so much, but I'm really not sure why they'd be the cause of it. Not even accidentally.

An example I can think of is their biggest inspiration for Freddy Kruger. When he was alive, Freddy was burned to death by an entire mob of parents so now he hunts down the children of that mob, which is essentially the whole town. Whether or not the parents directly did something like pour gasoline or light the fire, they witnessed it and thus became his targets.

In A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy is introduced as a serial child killer, Fred Krueger, from the fictitious town of Springwood, Ohio, who kills his victims with a bladed leather glove he crafted in a boiler room where he used to take his 20 victims. He is captured, but is set free on a technicality when it is discovered that the search warrant was not signed in the right place. He is hunted down by a mob made up of the town's vengeful parents and cornered in the boiler room. The mob douses the building with gasoline and sets it on fire by throwing Molotov cocktails, burning him alive. While his body dies, his spirit lives on within the dreams of a group of teenagers and pre-adolescents living on Elm Street, whom he preys on by entering their dreams and killing them, fueled by the town's memories and fear of him and empowered by a trio of 'dream demons' to be their willing instrument of evil. He is apparently destroyed at the end of the film by protagonist Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), but the last scene reveals that he has survived. He goes on to antagonize the teenage protagonists of the film's sequels, including Jesse Walsh (Mark Patton), Kristen Parker (Patricia Arquette), Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox), and Lori Campbell (Monica Keena).

If I had to guess the plot:

Henry already had trouble fitting in and a pretty poopy home life. Maybe while his dad was at war in Vietnam (that is the war he was in right?), his mother didn't take care of him and was awful.

Suddenly, when his dad was finally coming back to war, his mother flipped her switch and suddenly became the model mother and wife and despite her neglect, tried to get him to do it too, be he wasn't good at pretending.

He finally makes a friend Patty and he feels like things are finally looking up, but something happens to her which is one of the triggers to his spiral. Maybe he was with her when it happened and gets blamed for it? Or at least suspected.

Being that Patty is Bob's sister, maybe Hopper, Joyce, and Bob try to investigate the circumstances of her death and they get really close to the truth? Maybe they do discover the truth and they're the only ones that know because no one believed them.

Anyway, what happens to Patty was so terrible and Henry was so deeply affected that his dad decided they should move for a "fresh start" in a new house. This also affected him deeply and he had trouble adjusting.

When his dad wasn't looking, maybe his mother was still awful, which is another crack in the mirror.

When the nightmares started, his mom called Brenner on him and that was another trigger for him.

And thus, it all came crumbling down and he tried to kill his whole family.

I dunno. Guess this will be by bingo card and I'll cross off everything I got right when the play gets here.

All that to say, no one should be arguing and getting mad over all this. It's just a play. Yeesh.

Max’s scene with Vecna was SO FUCKING SAD OML, AND HER HAPPY MEMORIES????

EL TRYING TO GET TO HER AND HER REUNION WITH MAX WAS SO EMOTIONAL OMG, AND MAX IS IN A FUCKING COMA????

Lucas and Erica being attacked by white kids for like 20 minutes felt SO FUCKING GROSS OMG (the only negative thing I have to say about the s4 finale)

all of El’s happiest memories involved being with Max WAS SO CUTE OMG, and I love you Mike BUT THAT WAS SUCH A FUCKING STUPID MONOLOGUE, AND SHE CLEARLY DIDN’T WANT THAT (I understand his intentions tho) ALSO YEAHHH Y’ALL M*LEVEN IS FUCKING DEAD. ESPECIALLY AFTER MIKE MENTIONED THAT THEY NEVER TALKED.

THE JONATHAN AND WILL SCENE PLUS HUG GOT ME TEARING UP OMG

AND THE HOPPER AND EL REUNION WAS SUPER CUTE!!!

I wasn’t very attached to Eddie, but his death felt sad BUT ESPECIALLY SINCE DUSTIN SAW AND WAS CRYING OVER HIS DEAD BODY :(((((

ALL THE FAMILY REUNIONS AND HUGS WERE SO COOL!!!! oh yeah, and the end of the episode showing independent El, Jancy, Byler and Jopper was cool too.

One thing that always bugs me is the whole “but if byler's canon, Eleven would be so heartbroken” argument. Mainly because of these three things:

- believe it or not but practically EVERYONE in their life experience break-ups. It hurts a lot most of the time sure, but it’s a common human experience, and it’s one that you eventually get over with. People grow from it, people learn from it, people look back on it, people cry about it… But at one point, it’s what it is. A break-up. Usually not something traumatizing people ‘til the day they die. (I wrote this whole paragraph having never experienced a break-up but uhmmm let’s pretend I’m an expert shall we?) I seriously doubt El will forever be hurt and heartbroken because of it. She’ll grow as an independent person and learn more and more about life everyday, and I think she’ll be happy with that. (*cough cough* let’s not also mention the fact that she’ll probably be the one to initiate the break-up in the first place…)

- okay but…milkvan staying together hurts Will? Will is heartbroken already. No matter the situation, it hurts one of them. So why not opt for the situation that eventually winds up to be the less hurtful, most beautiful and narratively coherent, for every character involved?

- it’s odd because I’ve never seen that said about jopper back in season 2. Let’s forget for a second about Bob dying, therefore Bob not being affected by jopper ending up together. Even during season 2, before seeing Bob’s death, a lot of viewers, while they liked Bob, were still rooting for Hopper. (MAKES SENSE, THE NARRATIVE WAS BUILT TO MAKE US ROOT FOR HIM, JUST LIKE WITH BYLER) Bob didn’t stop them from shipping jopper, the ship has good chemistry, history and is built on understanding and shared experiences (upside down), why not ship it? season 1, same thing about jancy. After the finale, everyone was rooting for jancy endgame, even if Steve seemed like a new improved guy by then. IT MAKES SENSE, THE NARRATIVE WAS BUILT FOR JANCY OVER ST*NCY, AT LEAST IN THE FIRST SEASONS. Season 2 was different since the GA sympathized more with Steve as he was becoming a genuinely good person and was faced with Nancy not reciprocating his love. Yet, even though people felt “bad”, most of them still shipped jancy. It wasn’t because they were sad for Steve that they wanted Nancy to stay in a relationship with him, they knew that they didn’t work and that jancy had way more build-up and chemistry anyway. It was probably exactly because they felt bad for Steve and liked him more and more as a character that they didn’t want him with Nancy! They wanted someone to like/love Steve for who he was and everything. Shouldn’t it be the same with milkvan? El deserves better, whether it’s by being single or, in a functional loving relationship. And Mike, Mike should end up with the one the story has been reminding us over and over again is the better choice for him (and the one he actually loves). Weird how byler is treated differently than the previously mentioned ships, that "boohoo they can't end up together because, poor El!"

Anyway, very sorry about the rant, I just got mad because I've been seeing that everywhere recently and I really needed to talk about it! This is in no way me minimizing the pain El could feel, I simply don't believe that she would be completely heartbroken about it. She seems pretty ready to give up her relationship with Mike as a whole at the end of season 4. I think in season 5 she'll be more focused on her best friend who's literally in a coma and the fact that she has to save the world... Not her teenage boyfriend ending up together with the boy he loves.

~ ok like what the fuck is up with the duffer brothers giving us amazing new characters that have so much potential just to kill them off while giving the main cast plot armor

~ I AM IN NO WAY OF COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW OUR MAIN PEOPLE SURVIVED I THANK ALL THE GODS FOR KEEPING THEM SAFE

~ the whole time Eddie was having his little hero moment I was raging because I’m tired of the characters I love trying to be the hero and then dying

~ Eddie deserves so much better.

~ I am a little (a lot) irritated about all the queerbating (is that the proper term for this) im not sure if I’m being over dramatic and making issues out of something that’s not actually a problem but I’m bummed that they hyped up Byler and made Steddie and Ronance so like there and then did nothing with it

~ I was stressing my actual balls off worrying about Steve. Like I was so scared I had to watch the end of the last episode to make sure he was still there (in the process I spoiled Eddie’s death :/)

~ the deaths weren’t giving. The way the duffer brothers and co talked about the deaths coming I expected everyone to die like I was imagining all our favorite characters dropping like flies. Instead a bunch of not exactly liked or well treasured characters died. And the two main important major deaths that happened either a) was unnecessary imo and the was ignored by all but one of the main characters or b) backed out of and brought the character sorta back

~ Steve looked so good in these episodes. Like everyone did but Steve was giving off that mom energy and I was dying and when he was talking about his little nuggets and exploring the country I wanted to like die because that was so cute. It made me particularly happy because I’m like in love with Steve and I’ve always wanted a bunch of kids

~ but can we address how the reason Steve probably wants a bunch of kids is because he has felt so alone his whole life he doesn’t wanna keep feeling like that so he wants to have a big warm happy family

~ the stancy stuff was killing me and not in a good way

~ we finally got some relief for our lack of Jopper

~ I really wish we got more in that Will and Jonathan scene like I genuinely thought he was gonna come out but didn’t flat out happen. I think the duffer brothers and co are allergic to having males (will in particular) admit to being gay

~ max my baby. I was crying when Lucas was holding her and crying and she was like I can’t see or feel anything im scared I don’t wanna die. I thought it was going to cause me to die from heartbreak

~ I really thought Karen Wheeler was gonna have a bigger part in volume 2 and im bummed she didn’t

~ I was getting so mad whenever Jason was on screen. I thought he was gonna be a decent character but this man is crazy and I get where he is coming from but the fact that he was set on the fact that Eddie was guilty and refused to even consider anything else made me mad

~ vecna touching the girls with his ugly slimy hands also made me mad

Claim: London Calling might be used in s5

Evidence: First and foremost, this is a The Clash song. Anyone remember Should I Stay or Should I Go? And well, the duffers have repeatedly said they want to go back to the stuff they had been doing in Season 1. Also, let's have a look at the lyrics.

"PHONY BEATLEMANIA HAS BITTEN THE DUST"

Now, literally it is supposed to refer to how the rock scene was about to come to an end in 1977. But with regards to the show? It could likely refer to how the first three seasons ended with a ray of hope (although that doesn't mean it didn't foreshadow darkness as well). But at the end of season 4, this has ceased. The town has been torn into four parts and everyone is leaving. The only positives that come from it are the reunions. Besides that, Hawkins has completely plunged into darkness. So "Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust" could refer to the illusion that the worst is behind them. It's yet to come.

"COME OUT OF THE CUPBOARD, YOU BOYS AND GIRLS"

Looking at you, Mike Wheeler. Since this lyric is in the first part of the song, it could mean they might address Mike's sexuality in the early episodes. Byler Endgame? Byler Endgame! It could also refer to the budding relationship between Robin and Vickie. I think Vickie is going to appear more frequently than she did in s4 and that she and Robin would have a heart to heart, again in one of the early episodes.

"MELTDOWN EXPECTED, THE WHEAT IS GROWING THIN"

Well, it's an apocalypse. This lyric could refer to all their dwindling resources and how they have no time to lose (although we know there's gonna be a time jump). I think the Upside Down particles' entrance into the earth's atmosphere could have detrimental effects on human health. They certainly are going to address this, if it's true, since Stranger Things first and foremost is a sci-fi.

"FORGET IT BROTHER YOU CAN GO IT ALONE"

Definitely related to Jonathan's character arc. Argyle may have to go back to California since well, he has a family, doesn't he? Idk fr. Anyway, it could refer to Jonathan and Will being #siblinggoals again. Or it could refer to... Jonathan being Vecna'ed? I mean, it's possible. He'd survive it though, Will definitely knows his favourite song.

"LONDON CALLING TO THE ZOMBIES OF DEATH"

Zombie Boy? Yeah, it likely refers to the more central role Will (and as a consequence, Mike) is going to have. I don't exactly think Will would die since it has been said that he'll get a satisfying ending. But he could come close to death.

"WHILE WE WERE TALKING I SAW YOU NODDING OUT"

A reference to someone being Vecna'ed. Or probably a flashback to Max being Vecna'ed from Lucas's perspective? To show us something we may have missed? (Although y'all are eagle-eyed, I must say.)

"AND AFTER ALL THIS WON'T YOU GIVE ME A SMILE"

Let's face it, a major character is going to die. And I'm of the opinion that the major character might be someone who just entered a relationship in s5. (Hopefully, they won't pull that stunt with byler those two are precious!) Because well, at the end of s3, Jopper planned a date but we know how that went... and at the end of s4, Lumax planned a date which didn't happen either but atleast it means Max isn't dead. In the same way, this is probably gonna happen in s5 too. And this time, someone might actually die.

"I NEVER FELT SO MUCH ALIKE"

El and One. Or in a more twisted way, Will and One. That connection is definitely gonna be explored.

Also, in the end of the song there's a Morse code message that says S-O-S. Could we expect a parallel to s2?

In conclusion, they're probably gonna use London Calling in s5.

Can’t really think of anymore that I like, edissy/hellcheer could have been cute, byclair is cute, elumax is cute, and stancy v jancy I just don’t really care for either and they both have their own stuff to work out so. thank you so much for the ask I did struggle a lot , honestly I like any ship as long as it’s not gross or invalidating a character’s sexuality then I don’t really care.

Thoughts on Vol. 2 (spoilers):

Things I loved:

-I love the story and most of what happened

-Very happy it ended on a cliffhanger

-Shoutout to El for not giving Brenner closure

-The sound design (soundtrack, ost, sound effects) *chefs kiss*

-Every Argyle moment

-Screaming at how well the set up for Vecna’s origin is

-Jopper kiss jopper kiss

-Master of Puppets. Wow.

-You know it’s great when even the things I wish were done differently I can still really appreciate

-Will Byler’s speech. That’s all.

Things I didn’t love as much:

-My biggest gripes are all the loose ends (what happened to Owens/the military, why’s the upside down stuck in 1983, where are the possessed Russians, etc.)

-Things that didn’t make sense (why didn’t Nancy or anyone else have a sense of urgency when there’s a massive fucking rapture in Hawkins when that was literally in her vision, why did it take 2 days for the upside down to bleed into our world, etc.)

-The entire 2 day timeskip felt like a rushed ending to give vague closure but threw everything off for me personally, don’t get me wrong Robin and Vickie are cute but that was not the time to set them up, it was nice to see the reunion but everyone’s acting way too calm, etc.

-Mike Wheeler continues to be an utterly unbearable character, I was hoping he’d get Vecna’d and some sort of arc but all that happened was a half-ass retelling of Will’s speech to El and the obligatory “I love you”

-On Byler: (let me preface with the disclaimer that I am queer) I do not support it in canon. I think Mike has inner issues involving his sexuality that prevents him from having a true connection with anybody. Mileven has been falling apart since s3, and there’s no way he out of no where does a full 180 and gets with Will. I think he isn’t straight and has some feelings for Will but without any acknowledgment of that this season I absolutely do not support him finding himself and all of a sudden dating Will in 5, theres just no way that’s plausible and I think the unrequited love story is 1) very true to the queer experience and 2) adds depth to Will’s character as an outsider (which I think will be important and have to do with Vecna in 5)

-On queerbaiting: (again, from a queer person’s perspective) I literally do not see what y’all are talking about. There isn’t queerbaiting. Robin is canonically a lesbian, Will is very clearly gay, coming out doesn’t have to be Will standing up and announcing “I’M GAY!!!” it feels a lot more natural and realistic especially given the time (period and the events of the show) that he wouldn’t say that. Jonathan clearly knows as well so I don’t get the issue. Yeah, Robin’s love interest is a side character, so what? Byler isn’t canon? Big deal, go watch another show with boys kissing. I think that the canon queer characters are done very well and given that the world is literally ending don’t see a point in focusing on forcing relationships between any characters at this point ???

-This is bleak but more of the main cast should’ve died. It felt like the stakes weren’t really that high when the only ones killed off was Eddie (who was introduced this season) and kinda Max. I love all the characters and would be upset at their deaths but it needs to happen for the sense of danger and reality, when everyone makes it out fine it feels like wacky spring break adventures, Steve or Murray or Dimitri or somebody else should’ve bit the dust IMO, but given how badly some people are taking Eddie’s death maybe it was a good idea on their part for the fans not to

-The Stancy moments were all so forced and even the Jancy moment felt off after Jonathan literally talked about wanting to break up with her days earlier

-There’s probably more I’m forgetting in general but current ramblings lol

Overall, I think it was good save for the final 30 minutes but the reality is with the set up of Vol. 1 we were bound to be underwhelmed, that was 7 episodes of a massive season where there didn’t need to be closure and even if they tried harder here they probably couldn’t have accounted for everything they should have. I have high hopes for 5 and that it’ll clear up some things and disagree with a lot of the hate the Duffers are getting right now?

volume 2 thoughts

ok so. byler never had to become canon in season 4. yes it would have been nice and probably would have been the better choice if they do ever end up going canon but it’s not queerbait just because they didn’t go canon in season 4.

but the way they handled will’s storyline in volume 2 makes me fucking sick. even if byler never went canon and will was another robin, is that seriously how they’re going to treat their queer characters? will giving mike pep talks about el and taking a backseat whenever mike and el are onscreen? if they make that whole-ass “you can tell me anything” scene and then don’t have will ever come out i’m quitting the show.

they’ve built up byler sooooo much over the past years, not only in the show but also in interviews and on social media. the fact that we’re still dealing with this in 2022 is fucking sickening and i’ve honestly lost all confidence that byler will become canon because of the fucking finale. “will and mike have a moment of mutual understanding and acceptance” WHERE??? WHERRRRRE IS THAT MOMENT? when will says “el will love you” and then cries? when el and mike kiss and will stares sadly at them from the kitchen??

and then they make that ONE SINGULAR robin/vickie scene at the end like “ohhhh look at us we support gay people! there are lesbians, look at them! one of them doesn’t even impact the plot but they’re there!”

mike’s entire storyline this season culminating in him saying “ily” to el makes me want to throw up and also why did they lowkey make his love confession scene parallel his “you said yes” scene? like there was literally no reason to do that.

and eddie??? why did they kill eddie off Like That? it was so predictable and they literally showed it in the fucking trailer? they’re obviously trying to pull some “oh look he didn’t run away! he actually WAS a hero! but so sad he didn’t get to graduate!! this was supposed to be his year :(((” but that’s literally what all the eddie fans were saying this past month so why did they give him this cookie-cutter ass death? if they were gonna kill him off they could have had him sacrifice himself to save an actual person, instead of just dying alone covered in bats. and why were dustin and wayne the only ones to react to eddie’s death? steve nancy robin mike and erica all knew eddie really well. even max and lucas were on good terms with him. i get that they couldn’t show a funeral or anything because hawkins fuckin hates eddie, but they could have had a dustin-and-wayne scene for the entire group.

fuck stancy. it doesn’t matter if you think they’re cute or not all this “will they won’t they” is dumb as shit and it’s not fair to jonathan, nancy, or steve. either get them together or have them stay just friends but what they are now is fucking annoying.

russia gang was cute i liked the jopper scenes. but it feels like they took up so much unnecessary screentime?

oh and another byler thing why tf did they do that with the painting?? it didn’t have to be will and mike making out or anything but the fact that will’s gesture of love to mike ended up propping up milkvan is just cruel.

max and lucas were neat is was fun to finally see jason get his ass handed to him but wtf is up with max? it’s kinda repetitive to make her almost die twice like that. again, just kill her and get it over with or keep her alive. i truly don’t have the energy to “wait and see” if she’ll live.

all in all i LOVED volume 1. it was fun, it was scary, it was everything i wanted in a tv show and made me excited for volume 2. but volume 2 was a HUGE letdown. there were some good moments like the gang stealing the camper, the will/el hug, and hopper reuiniting with el, but other than that i kinda hated it. it felt heavy on useless running around and fighting but lacked any real character depth, and the way they handled will’s storyline was fucking cruel. i kept sitting there thinking “okay they’ve just laid the groundwork for an amazing scene, i just have to be patient enough and wait for the show to get good.” and then it never did.

i commented in the tags of somebody else’s post a few days ago that whenever we get queer representation, it’s either a stereotyped queer in a show for cishets or a well-written queer in a show for queer people. stranger things had the chance to do both, to write a story about 2 gay childhood best friends falling in love. and they fucking didn’t. i was naive for expecting good representation, and i guess from now on i’ll only watch shows if i know how the queer characters end up because i’m telling you right now i CANNOT deal with another 2 years of will’s sexuality being “left up to interpretation” and then getting a season where he kinda just hangs out and cries and never confirms anything. i fucking hate it here.

fuck netflix, fuck the duffers, fuck every single one of the cast members who teased byler in season 4, and fuck all of the social-media managers posting about byler. i fucking hate all of you.
