Confession time... I've spent the last year writing this fic under a new (and strictly explicit) pen name on Ao3. I figured it was time to post it here since it's now coming to a close. For those who like strictly jopper x smutty things, this one is for you! More on the way in the form of a sequel and one shots, so follow my alt pen VirginiaSlim if you'd like to read more :)

Joyce and Hopper get sidetracked in Alaska on their way home from Kamchatka. Caught up in a bad storm, they take shelter in an old cabin where they are forced to confront their past and the turbulent present if they ever want to survive a future together.
An attempt to fill in the blanks on the Russian plot and those missing days before the return to Hawkins (contains canon divergence)
-- Joyce was tossing and turning, still coming down from the adrenaline rush she'd had since she left California. Almost a week had gone by, her mission was finally complete, and she didn't have to worry anymore. Her body was still in fight or flight though, so she had forced herself to fall asleep with a mantra of sorts... Hopper was alive. He was right next to her. Everything was okay. As okay as could be expected for them, anyway.

Sometimes Joyce sits up in the middle of the night, calling for Will.
Sometimes she even gets out of bed, stumbles through the dark and walks straight into the wall, because the door isn’t where she thought it would be.
At first, she panics. Her fingernails scrape at the wallpaper, trying to manifest a doorknob out of nothing. Her eyes dart around. She doesn’t let them settle, adjust to a solid image in the dark.
She feels wide awake but she can’t string together a sentence. Her questions and pleas leave in broken syllables, shallow puffs of air. Usually Will’s name is the only intelligible word.
And then a voice burrows in. A deep and gentle murmur. Slow. Familiar. It comes from the bed.
“Joyce,” he says. “Look at me.”
She does. Finally, she looks at something. She looks and sees the shape of his shoulders against the faint light of the window behind him. The slow blink of his eyes. He sits on the bed in a room she doesn’t know. Not yet. It always takes a moment.
“Will?” she croaks.
“He’s safe, Joyce. He’s in his room.”
She leans back against the wall, the whole world tilting, taking on a slightly different shade of gray. Ah. Now she remembers. A heavy sigh tumbles through the dark as her mind heaves itself out of the corner it got lost in.
They don’t live in that house anymore.
They found Will. Back in 1983.
They’re safe.
Sometimes, she slides down to the floor. It’s a lot to believe all at once. Always will be.
For Hopper, it’s the dogs.
When nightmares don’t leave him panting and thrashing in the bed, flinching from invisible fists and the butts of rifles, the dogs will almost always take him back.
Not if he sees them. Not if he watches from the window while the neighbor walks them on the leash across the road, two big labradors with dangling pink tongues and wagging tails.
But if he’s standing on the back porch, cigarette on his lips - or curled up with El watching reruns of their favorite shows - or skimming the newspaper over coffee, reading crossword hints to Joyce - and he hears the dogs -
He also hears the rattling of chains, the crunching of paws in the snow, the deep tolls of clashing metal like discordant funeral bells. The dogs bark from behind a fence on the other side of the road, but Hopper sees them lunging, snapping, white teeth aglow in cool wintry light. And everyone has to hold stone still, until enough time passes that he knows they’re not lashing out to strike - that he remembers who they even are.
Joyce wants to move again. But Hopper won’t make them. He wants them to feel like they’ve finally got a home. And everywhere, he knows, there is someone who’s got a dog.
So, he flattens the torn and crumpled newspaper against the table, watches it soak up brown splotches of the coffee he spilled. Joyce releases her grip on the refrigerator door. Set in motion again by the shift of light in his eyes, she comes close. She drapes gentle arms around his shoulders and uses gentle words.
“You’re home, Hop.” That’s usually all she says. Her chest rises and falls against the top of his back.
And he reaches for her hand, warmed by a coffee mug, soft and small and familiar. Then he tilts back his head in search of her face. She always smiles when their eyes meet.
Sometimes, he can smile back.

Note
i feel like there isn't enough time for jopper to go the "true love is boring" route, all we are gonna get from them is 2 episodes of st4 and another season, in the middle of scifi show with multiple plots
Yes, exactly.

What if hopper and Joyce don't end up having romantic chemistry? They have mastered the "will they or won't they" chapter. It's been so long and I'm actually nervous that it won't be as special once they actually cross that threshold.
I hate to say it, but it probably won’t be as special for them in the end, regardless if they have romantic chemistry or not… I have a distinct feeling Jopper is about to go way of TV Tropes’ Shipping Bed Death or your scenario of True Love is Boring. The way I see it, there’s only a few ways their story can play out imo and really only one true path the show will take for our two lovebirds.
Joyce and Hopper finally get together only to discover…
Scenario 1 (the nsfw one) -  they only have chemistry in bed. Joyce and Hopper decide they are Better As Friends, and see each other sometimes when they feel the kids should spend the holidays together. And occasionally boink, ofc. This doesn’t work out at all and one or both end up jealous and even more unhappy, maybe even blaming one another for why they can’t work. They basically go back to where they were in the first episode ever. But there’s been a bit too much character growth for this one to happen I think. Also, see Belligerent Sexual Tension...
Scenario 2 (the unlikely one) - they have zero chemistry. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Etc. Aka the relationship equivalent of wet noodles. There’s an amicable break up and they move on to date different people. I don’t know about anyone else, but I really feel like ST is invested in a “Happily Ever After” ending for all the main characters, especially the Byers-Hopper clan. Unless they’re going to play this up as jealous Hopper (which they already did in S2) or jealous Joyce (maybe?) and start the will-they-won’t-they trope again. Or maybe they just do what my friend's parents did growing up and become Platonic Life Partners? They won’t have time to explore this Jopper ending in-depth though, and also I think Winona and David have far too much chemistry as actors… I just don’t see this scenario happening. If it did though, it's the definition of True Love is Boring.
Scenario 3 (the one we deserve) - all they do is fight. Because that’s all they know how to do with each other when they spend a significant amount of time together! They get to the point of wondering if they should break up and see other people, only for one (or both) to realize that a committed relationship doesn’t actually come easy once you’ve exchanged the first magical I Love You’s. Especially between two deeply stubborn people like Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper. They decide to work on it  (‘for the kids’) and show great progress at the very end of the series. They get to say 'I do' in the end and we get a very realistic representation of a somewhat healthy, middle aged relationship on television. Huzzah!
Scenario 4 (the one we’re getting) - it’s pure, boring candyfloss fluff. They finally hook up, maybe even get married, and roleplay Yours Mine and Ours. They still bicker, but Like An Old Married Couple. The show gives them approximately 40 min of screen time in the entirety of ST5 where they mostly hold hands and make heart-eyes at each other, or act as fodder for the kids to go “ew, gross!” The fans are happy they're happy, but we are all left feeling hollow. We live out our Jopper dreams in fanfic and fanart after the show ends. Womp womp :(
Personally, I’m setting my expectations low here. Like, low-low. I don't expect to see much of them, or their relationship when they finally do get together, just because there’s a million other plotlines to resolve in only a dozen episodes. But I am still very hopeful they at least get their happy ending, no matter how cloyingly sweet and boring it is. The writers owe it to them, after everything they’ve been through!

The thing ab BAMF! Joyce is that she isn’t necessarily this..stereotypical violent badass. She’s badass because her presence alone is powerful and she’s fueled by pent up, unbridling rage and will roast any asshole in her way because all her life, men have doubted and stomped all over her and my mom has simply had enough! Of! Your! Shit!
Joyce Byers is the type of badass who can absolutely destroy a person in just the smallest ways possible. And that’s the best kind of badass. She don’t need to shoot guns or get ripped like Sarah Connor. This tiny woman will unleash her fury and FUCK. YOU. UP. When you least expect it.
She’s a force of nature and y’all must bow down to milf queen. Periodt.
