Season 4 AU where Steve, Johnathan, and Nancy are in a poly relationship and are keeping it quiet because it’s Hawkins in the 80s. Johnathan and Nancy present themselves as a couple so Steve can also date other people without eyebrows being raised.

So when Eddie is like ‘you should get back with Nancy’ Steve considers the black bandana/handkerchief/whatever in Eddie’s pocket and figures he’s safe to talk to and is just like ‘oh actually all three of us are together’

And eventually Nancy gets with Robin and Steve gets with Eddie

As someone who used to ship Stoncy and Stonathan but now ships Jargyle and Steddie, I think it would be markedly hilarious if Jonathan and Steve had previously unacted upon feelings for each other (bc obviously the other person is straight! look at how they look at Nancy!) and then when everyone came back together - they're now in their new relationships of Jargyle and Steddie, respectively. And when that comes out, they both outloud in front of everybody (their partners included) yell something along the lines of "You're telling me I could have been dating you this whole time?!/I went through two and a half years of needless pining for nothing???" and then having to navigate, "no don't worry, I don't have feelings for him anymore" to Eddie and Argyle.

BONUS: Eddie thinks it's hilarious and is only slightly jealous, Argyle just assumed they were ex's based on how Jonathan used to talk about Steve.
