I was watching a video of Mario RPG glitches and saw the level up ally move glitch, and saw Geno with a pink cape. Was like gonna draw that hehe it’s silly. Geno would so love pink capes any color in general no questions ask alshdklrkrj xD the third and fourth drawings were sorta a stupid idea idk why it was in my mind lmao ;w; for those who don’t believe me the pink Geno glitch is real the screenshot is under the cut :)

Luigi: You're the most repulsive nenemy I've ever met.
Bowser: Once I teamed up with your annoying brother, princess Peach, prince cloudman and pinocchio to save the world from King Smithy.
*Luigi and Bowser in their wedding suits standing opposite of each other in the wedding ceremony at Bowser's castle*
Bowser in full confusion: Where the *1-up life sound* am I? 0_o

What Simpsons quote would work best for Geno?
(In the context of experiencing tiredness with his new doll form and losing the star pieces to the Smithy Gang twice)
Geno : *sigh* this is the worst day of my life.
*Bowser puts his hand on Geno's shoulder*
Bowser : the worst day of your life so far !

Wishes - Mario x Geno One-Shot
Every day, since the Star left, Mario would talk to the night sky. About what's been happening since the adventure ended, how he'd been handling life, what was new but also the same.
How he missed Geno.
How he wished he could see the Star on more time.
Fandom: Super Mario & Releated Fandoms, Super Mario RPG Rating: General Audiences Relationship: Mario/Geno (Nintendo), Additional Tags: Other characters are at least mentioned, Missing Someone, If you constantly wish will they come back?, They're gay your honor, And that's in no way a bad thing.
@nintendonut1, this one's for you. Fun little 2 hour exercise to write this up. And another 2 for typing and editing.
Link to Comic Reference.
“Um, hey Geno… It’s been about a week since you left. I hope the reconstruction of Star Road is going well. I’m kind of assuming it is. I mean, I’ve been seeing a lot of small…I don’t know, miracles happening? That’s the best way to put it, I suppose. Maybe small wishes? Either way, good moments have been happening again and I know…I know that has to be you.”
“I hope you’re okay. Mallow misses you. He’s talked to Peach and I a few times. Gaz was nice enough to give the doll to Mallow after learning what happened. And Mallow…gave it to me. Gave you to me… Said I probably needed you more than he did…”
“I really want to see you again. I know that’s a really big ask. I’m sure you’re busy. But I really, really miss you. Just…Just one more day. If you could manage that. I’ll take an hour, a minute even! Just…”
“I wish I could hold you again…”
“Hey again Geno. I’m seeing a lot more of your handy work. Only after 23 days, that’s impressive. You must be close to finishing it all up, if not already done. I mean, I’m sure you had help, it wasn’t all just you. The other Stars you were talking about helping out. You all no doubt working together to get everything finished.”
“Luigi’s still curious about you. Well, he really wants to know what it’s like to kiss a Star. B-But he also keeps asking me to retell the different portions of our adventure. How I met Mallow, what it was like working together with Bowser, how stubborn Peach is as well as how she is as a fighter.”
“How…How we met, what you’re like, your experiences while being down here. When I fell for you, the first time we kissed, what I…admire about you…”
“I think he’s trying to make sure I don’t forget about you. I mean, I never could. But…he knows how I’ve been feeling lately… He is my brother after all. He knows I miss you and…he knows I’ve not been myself. His questions…help me focus on the good times we had…”
“I wish you could meet Luigi, I think you two would get along great.”
“Hey Geno. It’s been about a month and a half since…since our adventure ended. Luigi thinks saying ‘since you left’ isn’t the best way to think about it.”
“Um, things have been going pretty well. Peach is as supportive as ever, she and Luigi have really helped me. Mallow’s done well falling into his title of prince. It helps that he has so many people supporting him.”
“We’ve finally heard from Bowser. He’s been quiet since…well, you know. He asked us to come to his keep. All three of us, if you can believe it. We were a little concerned for a moment thinking he was planning something devious. But he just wanted to show us around. Show off what he and his minions had been able to clean up and rebuild. It’s quite impressive.”
“Granted, the moment was ruined when Bowser announced he had his next plan laid out. Still, it was a rather enjoyable experience…”
“I wish you could see the progress we’ve made.”
“Hey Geno, we’re about 4ish months out. Stopped a few of Bowser’s plans. I saw your handiwork first hand. Felt lighter on a few jumps. Found a few hidden Power-Ups that shouldn’t have been there. Thank you, for that. I mean, I know you can only help if someone wishes for that boost for me. Can you…make wishes as well as grant them? Can you see me from where you are? I can’t…I don’t think I can see you. I’ve tried…”
“I wish I could just see you up in the sky.”
“Hey Geno.”
“I wish I could know that you’re doing okay.”
“Hey Geno.”
“I wish I could hear from you.”
“Hey Geno.”
“I wish I could really talk to you.”
“Hey Geno.”
“I wish you could have spent more time here.”
“Hey Geno.”
“I wish you knew how much I missed you.”
“Hey Geno…”
“I wish you could come home.”
His soul was practically singing with joy and excitement as he descended from the night sky. Fully focused on the house with the green roof lying below him.
He should probably get Mario’s attention.
But he also wanted this to be a surprise.
Oh, this was going to be so great!
He was thrilled to find an open window, easily gliding in. Excitement grows further upon finding the familiar puppet. His body. Sitting so contently on one of Mario’s shelves. Kept close to where the human slept.
Where Mario dreamed.
He hoped he was able to provide good dreams to Mario in some way.
Floating into the familiar form felt like returning to a safe space. The return of the weight of gravity welcoming as he became familiar with his limbs once more. The weight of it all providing a way of grounding him again, to tell him he was finally back and-
Geno let out a rather undignified yelp as the shelf below him collapsed. Said puppet banging his head against the wooden floor.
Ah, yes, pain. The one thing he didn’t miss.
“Ow, ow, ow…” Geno mumbled as he carefully massaged his head. Slowly moving until he was kneeling on the ground. Slowly opening his eyes, Geno took a chance to better look around the room.
Even with how dim it was, light only provided from the open doorway, he could still make out enough of what the room held. It was an overall simple layout. Two beds, each dressed with either a red or green comforter laying across each bed, sat across from each other in the room. Allowing enough space on either side for a dresser and desk.
The doorway leading out to the rest of the home that was providing the only light for the bedroom was quickly blocked by a large shadow.
Looking over found Mario standing in the doorway. Appearing both frazzled and shocked. No doubt startled by the loud crash.
Suddenly feeling self-conscious by still being on the ground, Geno swiftly got to his feet.
“Ah…sorry. I kind of wrecked your shelf.” Geno said quickly. Not sure what he should be saying at this point.
“I should’ve gotten your attention first, I was just… I was really excited to…um…”
It dawned on Geno that Mario had not moved an inch since appearing in the doorway. Gripping onto the door frame as he just stared in disbelief at the puppet.
Had Geno been a bit too hopeful in being accepted once again?  That they would fall into their similar patterns as before? Has Geno been gone too long? Was Mario…upset?
“I-I know it took me a while!” Geno attempted to explain, “The work up on Star Road never ends, y’know? But…”
Even if Mario was upset. Even if Geno had missed his chance to return properly. He still needed the human to know what he’d done for the puppet.
“I’ve always heard them,” Geno choked out, hands pressed to his chest. The familiar feeling of tears spilling from his eyes, his throat tight as if stuffed with cotton. “All those words, for me to… To come home… I’ve heard every last one. To see you again, to see all that you’ve talked about, it sounds so wonderful…”
Geno’s eyes flickered down, “I just hope I’m not to late-”
The puppet tensed as he felt warmth pressed to his cheek. Eyes snapping back up to find that Mario had moved much closer. The human now looks back in absolute shock. Geno doing his very best to not melt into the touch as Mario’s thumbs gently brushed across his cheeks.
“N-No way…” Mario eventually whispered out, “Am I dreaming? Is this real?”
“Is it really you, Geno?”
The puppet was absolutely stunned at how happy, how joyful, how relieved Mario sounded. The worry he felt about the quiet before completely gone with how radiant Mario now looked at him.
Letting out a relieved laugh, Geno replied with, “Y-Yeah, that’s me! Let’s get this show on the road, right?”
He faltered slightly as tears started to silently fall from Mario’s eyes. Unable to ask if he was alright before being pulled into a tight hug. Mario calling out the puppet’s name with absolute exhilaration.
“I th-thought I’d never see you again!” Mario choked out, still crying, “But-But you’re here and you’re real and-”
Geno felt the sob that escaped the human. Mario desperately clawing at Geno to get him as close as possible as he whispered softly, ‘I can’t believe it!’.
As his own tears started to fall once more, Geno allowed himself to sink into the warmth Mario created. Wrapping arms around the human as he buried his face into the crook of Mario’s neck. Even as he was shaking from Mario’s gentle but happy cries, Geno knew this was what he wanted.
Geno loved Star Road.
Geno loved the Mushroom Kingdom and this world.
Geno loved this body.
But he knew that it would always be Mario that he would pine for the most.
Geno would always go back to Mario.
Mario was his home.
“Y-Yeah, I’m here,” Geno eventually whispered back, “I’m here, Mario…”
He wasn’t sure how long they remained like that. Each tangled up in the other. Soaking up the warmth and joy each other was providing.
But Geno was broken out of the moment when something bitter entered his nose. The puppet pulled back slightly to ask, “Is something burning?”
“Mamma Mia, my pasta!”
Mario was out of the bedroom before Geno could fully process what had been said. A few seconds behind in following the human out. Freezing as his eyes landed on a large fire on the stove top.
“How did this even happen!?” Geno called out frantically. Mario rushed as he filled another post with water and flung it onto the fire.
It all eventually calmed down when the pot on fire was put out and reduced to smoke. Both staring at it with a mixed feeling of disappointment and residual shock. The contents inside a dried, brunt puck of food.
“Well…” Mario broke the silence, “do you mind if your first meal back is take out?”
Geno couldn’t help but laugh, “I totally do not.”
Pizza was an absolutely amazing first meal to have. Made even better that they could sit across from each other. Regaling each other with tales from what’s happened for the past few months.
Luigi was thrilled to properly meet Geno. The puppet understood in an instant the protective older sibling feeling Mario had for the other human. Geno immediately promised to keep the younger brother safe at any cost.
It was a joy to see everyone once again. Peach, Mallow, Gaz, it was all amazing. Seeing how they’d changed yet remained the same.
Running into Bowser was an interesting interaction. As the Koopa was surprised yet happy to see Geno. But was also in the middle of trying to kidnap Peach when spotting Geno.
It was a wonderful experience to see the world once more.
Even more so with Mario right by his side.
Geno was finally home.
And he was more than happy to stay.

Was thinking of the "Who will be the sexyman of the SMRPG remake?" debacle and I have some Cursed (tm) sexyman options that haven't really been suggested:
Bowyer (self-explanatory)
Culex (also self-explanatory)
Exor (bc he is hugelarge and also a pathetic little meow meow based on his bestiary entries)
Smithy (a 3-way venn diagram of "People into robots" vs. "People into old men" vs. "People into Santa Claus")
I think it's none of them. Geno has already won it-- he's the shipping bicycle for Mario, Bowser, Vivian, and even Dimentio… and the source of plenty AUs.
I do wish it was Culex tho, he's the most objectively attractive character in the game-- my friend and I even toyed with the idea of Culex x Mario
Although it seems like Yaridovich is the runner up, since he is paired with Jonathan, other Smithy Gang members, or original characters. Hell, whenever I share him with people who haven't played the remake, they go "I like him he's a loser."
And in Japan, I think it's… surprisingly Jonathan, followed by… the clown brothers??? It was a shock to me, given how little the latter end up doing.
Claymorton and Bowyer are less sexyman and more happy meal scrunkly toy.

'Quest Tober (31/31)
What is this?
'Quest tober is an event where people can request fics for a certain time period! I usually like to challenge myself, aaand I've certainly been slacking on regular requests, so I figured I'd give this a go for a second time. You may request anything, as long as it goes along with the rules in the pinned guidelines. Send a PM or ask if you're not sure about something, or if there's a character you think I might do and or have done before but isn't up there.
Are there any specific rules or notes for this event?
Only a handful:
If you want to submit a request for this event you MUST have something orange in it or an emoji that follows the Halloween theme 🎃👻👽. Ooor something else that lets me know that your request is for this event, such as... 'hey, this request is for the 'Quest-Tober event,' etc etc.
You can only submit ONE request to give other people a chance to request too.
There are only THIRTY ONE (31) request slots available for this event. Once the title above reaches (31/31) I won't be taking requests for this event anymore, so request while you still can!
Where will the event's fics be?
I will post all fics on tumblr and onto my ao3 as soon as I get done with it for that day. Down below will be the fics that have been requested and what specific day they'll be posted on in October.
Requested Fics (Whoops didnt have time to finish all of them, will post them when ready![by the end of the year])

Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel idea
Plot:
A few months after the events of the first movie, Mario and Peach are developing strong feelings for each other and Mario is planning to tell her how he feels about her. However, Bowser breaks free and accidentally gravely injures Peach during his breakout.
In a desperate attempt to save her life, both the heroes and villains go on a journey to Sarasaland, another dimension within the Mushroom Kingdom, to find the mythical 1-UP Mushroom created by the god Arceus.
At the journey through Sarasaland, the heroes meet Princess Daisy, Peach’s friend from another world, and her bodyguard Geno. And Bowser recruits Wario and Waluigi from the Human World to stop Mario.
Plot Differences:
.Obvious new thing needed like the Super Star: The 1-UP Mushroom
.ACTUAL character development!!
.Mario X Peach moments!!!! (Mostly expressed through flashbacks or at the end where they would FINALLY KISS!!!)
.Mario and DK’s friendship builds up more
.More Mario and Luigi bro moments
.Geno has angst and Spider-Man 2099 vibes
.Bowser’s past is explored more
Cast:
The original cast returns and has some new additions:
Daisy: Hailee Steinfield (Notable Roles: Spider-Gwen from Spider-Verse, Vi from Arcane, and Kate Bishop from Hawkeye) or Jenna Ortega (Wednesday Addams, Brooklynn from Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, and Tara Carpenter from Scream.)
Wario: Danny DeVito (Notable Roles: Phil from Hercules, Harry Wormwood from Matilda, and The Penguin from Batman Returns)
Waluigi: Willem Dafoe (Notable Roles: Green Goblin from Spider-Man and Ryuk from Death Note)
Geno: Benedict Cumberbatch (Notable Roles: Doctor Strange, The Grinch, and Smaug from The Hobbit.)
Arceus the Alpha Pokémon: Mel Brooks (Notable Roles: Vlad Dracula from Hotel Transylvania, Bigweld from Robots, and Governor William Le Petomane from Blazing Saddles)

7,8,13 for mario or pokemon please please please i love reading your hater thoughts
7 : what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them? i don't know.... i don't think there's any character i have it in my heart to hate solely because of the fandom.. mario specifically is something i've always been into in a very self-contained way because being a nintendo series with like 200 games will, by nature, give many people many different interpretations of the characters. and i have a very specific interpretation myself so if i disagree with something it doesn't really affect my own viewing of the characters? if that makes sense. i will admit though i don't really understand the geno hype. i have played most of smrpg but he hasn't really done anything noteworthy yet????? (i'm not DONE but i'm at like the cloud kingdom place where mallow found out he's a prince) and a lot of people ship him with mario but i just don't get it yet. idk if it's a fanon substance thing or if it's just my own fault for playing the game too sporadically to really pay attention to the original characters.. but i love booster. i love mallow. i love how mario and peach and bowser are written in the context of this specific game. but geno has just not wowed me. less of a "began to hate because of how fandom acts" but "fail to see the appeal despite how fandom acts". this will probably change but it's my biggest mario series confusion. what do you all see in him 8 : common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about on a light note i will say luigi autism mario adhd. i have always seen mario autism luigi adhd personally. this has never been a big deal i just think that the roles should be switched occasionally on the "mario bros autism-adhd solidarity" posts. on a more annoying but slightly related note people like to write that mario is more impulsive than luigi to a significant extent like "luigi has to hold him back from doing stupid shit" extent and that is WRONG. we are clearly not talking about the same luigi who just randomly slept on a magic bed in a resort's museum and jumped on a glowing magic artifact in the middle of a wedding and published a book about himself where he lied about every single detail and renovated his house to build a secret diary room that he then sealed after like a week... and has literally anyone ever seen mario do something and luigi try to hold him back from it. no he is god's #1 enabler 13 : worst blorboficiation YOU KNOW WHAT. honestly mario. luigi is treated like shit also but mario has it so so bad. like we all know luigi has it so bad but SO DOES MARIO and no one talks about it. he has silent protagonist syndrome where people go "no dialogue? time to project EVERY annoying trope onto him so i can make his dynamic with luigi really weird!" like not to quote my own post but.
Tumblr media
it bothers me so much because people who are obsessed with luigi (SPECIFICALLY bowser x luigi fans) LOOOOOVE writing mario as this like extremely overprotective older brother figure in a way they JUST DON'T ACT LIKE in canon and it's SO BOTHERSOME. it's exactly like how people write sans with papyrus x mettaton and it's just so. aren't we all tired. aren't you all tired.
just. fandom be normal about characters who are twins for 2.7 seconds challenge IMPOSSIBLE. and it's hard to talk about mario's characterization without luigi's because a lot of it is linked to me but dear god there is no shortage of he would not fucking say that. and there's not as much of this now but like. MATPAT. has RUINED my LIFE. that stupid fucking mario is evil theory makes me so mad like NO THE FUCK HE IS NOT.
it might just be me being crazy but i feel like where luigi DOES get treated like an incompetent baby or really resentful/jealous or whatever he's just such a more widely written character than mario by virtue of often not being the player character / protagonist the same way. like with luigi there's always a sense of (barring a few obvious things) "i can imagine him acting like this under certain circumstances" (not always the way that he's portrayed but often enough comparatively) whereas with mario it's like. dude has 7 personality traits and you're fucking it up.
Tumblr media
like did you even read the source material 😔did you play A mario game. once. i just feel like he has it bad in a way that's less surface level. like peach and bowser and daisy also get pushed aside pretty frequently and reduced to surface level characteristics but with mario it's like. that's the protagonist. and the surface level characteristics he's reduced to aren't even ones he actually has. NOT TO MENTION that he has a really bad case of post-movie adaptation characterization 😭 HE IS NOT THAT INSECURE. WHERE IS HIS WHIMSY. HIS SILLY SWAG. PLEASE!!!! IT'S ALL HE HAS!!!!!!!!

Amelia/(Good Mimi) x Good Iggy Koopa?
This is a relationship that I don't think Piantissimo, Mario, Peach, Rosalina, Luigi, Daisy, O'Chunks, Nastasia, Lemmy Koopa, Roy Koopa, Bowser or even Nostradamus seen coming!!
(Geno however seen it coming, due to his ability to sense souls as a star-spirit, he could sense their slowly growing love for each other but told no one until the relationship began.)
I MEAN HOW?!! How did this even happen?! How can the former terror of Gloam Valley, who's evil-half is classy and condescending towards others, date someone as goofy, weird and formerly crazy as Iggy Koopa?!! (WHAT IS EVEN GOING ON?!)
The Prelude to the Relationship:
(Amelia has been already helped by Rosalina's star-spirit magic after she reverted to her evil-possessed personality as Mimi for the 2nd time and was made good again as Amelia.)
It started during late Part 4, Iggy (who was still a Koopaling) and Amelia were already best friends, due to how the two work together well during times of heroic duty and leisure.  Both kept discovering similar interests they had in common, such as how both liked having tangerines as a snack and using their legs to hang upside down from trees. Lastly, both liked Sherbet Shy Guy's ice cream and both liked to play "Rock, Paper, Scissors" using their shift-shaping capabilities to turn into the literal objects of the game.
Plus, the two kept supporting each other whenever they dealt with the adversities of fitting in with the Mario crew as former villains. Amelia and Iggy often isolated themselves from the Mario crew whenever the crew was too unfair to them. Whenever they stayed together, despite being best friends, they subconsciously felt subtle romance towards each another.
Tumblr media
How Amelia and Iggy fell in love:
During the beginning of Part 5 after Iggy accidentally turned himself human, Amelia saw Iggy as a human for the first time with surprise and instantly fell in love with him. On the other hand, when Iggy saw Amelia through human eyes for the first time, he instantly fell in love with her too, but he got scared of Amelia and hid under a table. Amelia told Iggy not to be afraid, Iggy shyly came out from the table and embraced his new feelings towards her.
(Due to Iggy having the mind of a human now, he found human-like girls more attractive than other koopa-girls, despite Amelia being a Beanish girl).
Iggy on the same day he fell in love asked Amelia if she would like to be his girlfriend, despite how he's really a koopaling. Amelia gleefully agreed by hugging him and gave Iggy a 3-second kiss on the cheek. She told Iggy as she hugged him that it did not matter whether he was a koopaling or human, he will always be her sweet, brave goofball. Iggy also told Amelia that she can decide whenever she would like for him to be human, whenever the spell wears off.
If you want to know more about Mimi and Iggy's Relationship, just visit my DeviantArt account named "unarpan0816".
(These are not my characters, Iggy is the intellectual property of Nintendo. (Amelia is a semi-original character), Mimi is the intellectual property of Nintendo and Intelligent Systems).

It's the Same Damn Moon, Bud
I can't believe it's been over three weeks since I said I wanted to put some pressure on myself to write about "Slay the Princess," and I didn't do it. I just didn't write!
Instead, I wrote many thousands of words of my actual novel and also spent more than a hundred hours converting dozens of files from one programming language to another for my actual job, which, in case I haven't reminded you in the last few entries (I PROBABLY HAVE, THOUGH), is "computer programmer for large and faceless company you've probably never heard of and have almost certainly been affected by and we like it that way."
So, now, I'd like to write about it. It's been a while since I even played it! I'm going off of memory here, which is one of my favorite ways to write.
Slay the Princess is a visual novel that uses Ren'Py as its engine. It's creaky and not terribly well put-together, but I love it anyway, because that's the kind of gamer I am. I enjoy seeing people do strange and interesting things with engines like Ren'Py, and this is a game that absolutely does that. I imagine that its code is a mess of true/false flags that determine what dialogue appears and what options you can choose at any given point. It's part of who I am, as a computer programmer. I love imagining how things are coded.
When the game starts, you don't have to follow the title directive, that is, you don't have to go slay the princess. You can walk away. You can, in fact, continue walking away over and over until the game ends. There are achievements for it and everything. There are achievements for everything else, too. I normally don't like achievements like these in games. I like them in this game.
What bothers me about achievements in a lot of games is that I just want to play the damn game and be left alone. I want to explore. I want to see things on my own, and sometimes that means missing things. It actually means missing things quite often. I'm okay with that. I believe that everyone should have their own unique experiences when it comes to video games. It is one of the things that makes video games unique.
Recently, Super Mario RPG was re-released on Switch, and several podcasts I listen to covered it. Invariably, the first question asked by one host to the others was "What party are you using?" They all discussed how they played the game as individuals. I love that, even though I think they all made the wrong choice (everybody picks Bowser over Geno, which is simply objectively the wrong choice: Bowser can't use Geno Boost, the best goddamn ability in the game, and his attack power isn't even as high as everyone thinks it is). The fact is, that freedom to choose is what makes games special. Your choices matter. They mean something.
They mean everything.
They are the only thing that means anything.
When I played the demo of Slay the Princess roughly a thousand million years ago, I got every achievement. All the achievements were related to which Chapter 2 I saw. The choices made in Chapter 1 determine how Chapter 2 begins. That makes sense. By replaying and seeing them all, I got a sense of what kind of a game Slay the Princess is.
If you haven't played the demo, but you have played the game, then don't go back to play the demo. It's alright.
If you haven't played the demo or the game, you should probably play the demo. It's very good.
The demo ends very early in Chapter 2. You meet the Princess again, and see what has become of her, and the game ends. Or, really, it restarts. Your choices in Chapter 1 shape who she becomes. Who she is. How she greets you. If you killed her in Chapter 1, she might show up as a ghost in Chapter 2, with an X-shaped scar on her chest from where you plunged your pristine blade into her and pierced her. If she killed you, she might show up as a giant, a monster, physically imposing and powerful and ready to do it again. If you were kind to her, and did everything you could to avoid harming her, then you'll see one of two Princesses in Chapter 2: the Damsel or the Prisoner. My favorite ending of the demo was the Prisoner.
To see the Prisoner, you have to take the pristine blade when you see it in the cabin. You have to listen to the Narrator, who tells you that you have to kill her. You have to go into the basement of the cabin with the pristine blade in your hand. It doesn't matter what you say to the Princess as you descend the stairs. Of course it matters. All of it matters.
What matters more is that you mustn't actually attack the Princess. You must drop the pristine blade and speak to her. She'll speak to you. You can ask her questions, if you want. It doesn't matter, except for the fact that everything you do matters. You can ask her for name. She won't tell it to you. She is simply the Princess. You have to tell her that you don't want to kill her. That you want to rescue her. She's shackled to the wall by her wrist. She tries to gnaw off her arm like a feral wolf in a trap. You have to free her. You use the pristine blade and sever her arm. Good job, hero. She's free. You have to resist the pull of the story's Narrator and warn her that you're being forced to kill her against your will.
She'll take the pristine blade away from you, and, with her remaining hand, cut your throat, killing you.
Chapter 2 begins much like Chapter 1, except now there's an additional voice in your head joining the Narrator and the Hero: the Skeptic. You return to the cabin. The Skeptic forces you to take the pristine blade before you descend into the basement of this new cabin. It's not like the old one. It's fortified. It's solid. There's no escaping this one, and there's no escape for the Princess, either: she now has three chains attaching her to the wall. There's one for a shackle around each of her wrists, and a third iron ring around her neck. Your previous plan won't work this time. You won't be cutting her free.
I loved the Prisoner when I played the demo. She was my favorite. I liked seeing the Skeptic. I liked the idea of approaching the Princess with caution and deciding that I liked her more than the Narrator. That I didn't want to hurt her, but only after I made it clear to her that hurting her was an option. It was a fun story: two people who don't trust each other learning that they can. Then the world conspired to make sure that they couldn't try the same trick twice.
To say I was a bit disappointed by how this turned out in the final version of the game would be… well, it would be exactly right. I was a bit disappointed, but just a bit.
The Princess has a plan to escape, and it's the same plan she had the first time. She won't trust YOU with the pristine blade, so you have to give it to her. If you don't, she beats you up. This is a recurring theme in the game: the Princess beats you up in most of the paths. It's kind of sad, in a way, just how poorly you do in physical confrontations against the Princess, but I suspect that if the game had it the other way around that it would be even sadder. Can you imagine how pathetic a character she would seem if you could just slap her around at your leisure? And how pathetic a character you would be, too, for that matter?
If you trust her with the pristine blade, she will use it to cut through her own neck. This, as you might imagine, causes her to die, and her head hangs on a thin strip of flesh before gravity tears the strip and her lifeless head falls to the floor. But she asked you to take the head with you when you leave the cabin, so that's what I did. I trusted her, and she trusted me, to an extent, and now she was dead. Whatever she had planned, I would go along with it. And so, carrying her corpse's head by its long, beautiful hair, I left the cabin, and she revealed that she was actually still alive, and able to speak, and she thanked me, and then the world ended.
That's what the Narrator said would happen if I didn't slay the Princess, and I had not, in fact, slain the Princess. The Narrator was right. The world ended. Ghostly hands appeared from nowhere and they took her head away, and I saw myself in a mirror, and the voices of the Narrator and the Hero and the Skeptic fell away and I was left in the void at the end of the world with those magical hands puppeting the corpse of the headless Princess I had just saved, the one I had spent a hundred million years wondering about, wondering who she really was, what her real name was, how she was meant to end the world. Here she was, dead and possessed and confused and doing her best to give me the answers and not yet able. But she would be, if I kept going. If I started over. If I went back to Chapter 1, with no knowledge of what I had just done, and tried again, tried something different, because I would be forced to try something different, so that I could bring a new vessel to this Princess made of hands in the void at the end of the world.
What else could I do?
The game opens with this message:
Whatever horrors you find these dark spaces, have heart and see them through.
There are no premature endings. There are no wrong decisions.
There are only fresh perspectives and new beginnings.
This is a love story.
And it's true. There are no wrong decisions.
In fact, none of the decisions you make matter at all, except for all of them, and they are the only things that do.
And I did, in fact, love the Princess, and I wanted to know her better, the way one might love a statue, or a painting, or a god, and wish to know it better.
So back into the cabin I went, at the start of Chapter 1. I couldn't make the same decisions this time around. The game would not let me. So I chose a new Chapter 2 this time: the Tower.
I'll spare you the details of each choice I made. All of them mattered, but I'll tell you a secret. I'll tell you something that I've not seen a single write-up of Slay the Princess tell me, and I sincerely believe that it's the most important thing of them all: I keep saying all of your choices matter. And that's true: they do.
But they only matter to you.
My choices, the ones that I made, only matter to me.
The fact that I sent the Prisoner to the Princess made of hands first matters only to me.
The fact that I sent the Tower to the Princess made of hands second matters only to me.
The fact that I sent the Damsel to the Princess made of hands third matters only to me.
The fact that I sent the Fury to the Princess made of hands fourth matters only to me.
The fact that I sent the Witch to the Princess made of hands fifth matters only to me.
It is the only thing that matters when one plays Slay the Princess. What do you do? What do you choose? Who are you, to the Princess? Who are you, to yourself? This doesn't matter to anyone else. Nobody else will ever, ever care.
Even the Princess doesn't care. The Princess made of hands will finally gain enough knowledge after the fifth vessel brought to her to regain her full consciousness, and you will have an opportunity to speak with the Narrator a final time before you meet her. He will answer some of your questions.
So will she, each time you see her.
I won't bore you with the details.
What matters is that the Princess, as we all suspected, those of us who played the demo, and who played it dozens of times to see everything we could, is indeed a Lovecraftian cosmic horror. She contains multitudes. She contains all the vessels we gave to her and more. She is all of them. She is change incarnate: the Shifting Mound is her name. She was never a Princess, but that's how you saw her. You saw a Princess before, but now she is a goddess capable of destroying universes, and she wants you to join her, to take her many hands and end this world just like the Narrator said she would.
You have choices here, of course, just as you had them every other step of the way. None of them matter any more or any less than any other choice you've made. What did you ask the Narrator when you had the chance? It doesn't matter. What vessels did you bring to the Shifting Mound? Doesn't matter. You'll reach this point no matter what you chose, unless you ended the game early. Here you are, and here she is, and now you have a new set of choices.
I didn't want to kill her.
I didn't want to destroy the universe.
So I didn't.
I went back to the cabin, one last time, along with the voice of the Hero. The Narrator was gone, but I was there, and the voice of the Hero was there, and the pristine blade was there. I chose not to take it.
The princess greeted me as I made my way down the stairs for the final time. "And there you are," She said. "Hands empty. So you don't feel like reacreating our first meeting detail for detail. I wonder what else will be different."
She misspelled the word "recreating." That bothered me. I wonder if it was ever fixed. I saw several updates saying that typos were fixed, but I haven't checked this one in a while.
I learned later that this can be different if you didn't take the pristine blade with you when you first met her the first time you played through Chapter 1, but it doesn't matter any more than anything else.
I told her I didn't want to be a god, and she said she didn't, either. I asked her to leave the cabin with me, and she agreed.
I told her I loved her.
She was embarrassed, and said she loved me, too, but didn't want to be all sappy about it.
We left the cabin.
The game ended.
I was told that my unique path through the game would be represented by "Our Song," and here it is.
Tumblr media
And none of this, none of it, matters, except to me, and to me, it's the only thing that does.
The game has a lot of achievements. I mentioned that before. No matter what you do, you'll unlock achievements. If you meet the Witch in Chapter 2, you can gain enough of her trust to get her to agree to climb the stairs out of the cabin with you. You can let her go first and stab her in the back, or you can go first and she'll stab you in the back. These choices are mutually exclusive, and each have their own achievement. This encourages you to see everything. To see how much and how little each choice you make matters. To encourage you to keep replaying the game, to get your perfect "Our Song," to see all of her forms and her shapes and how you can shape her, and that is what you do with your choices.
The Princess, the vessel for the Shifting Mound, is a reactive creature. You are the only thing in the game world that makes choices. She will always react to you coming down the stairs with the pristine blade with the same dialogue each time you do so. It's mechanical. It's a computer program. There's nothing random about it. There are no ghosts in this machine: she is only a machine. Your choices are all that matter, even though none of them do. You will, no matter what you choose, eventually reach a point where the world ends and the hands of the Shifting Mound appear from nowhere to claim a new vessel. Sometimes the vessel is nothing more than a heart, cut out from a body made of metal blades. Sometimes the vessel is so large that all you can see is the giant head, hands of the Shifting Mount covering its eyes. Sometimes the vessel is a head and torn-open torso without a heart at all, and sometimes the vessel is a beast, a six-legged lion, a ghost, or a rotted skeleton.
It doesn't matter. The Shifting Mound does not care.
Some of her dialogue does change, it turns out. The first couple of times you see the Shifting Mound, her dialogue is always the same, but if the vessels liked you, or made it outside, then some of the Shifting Mound's dialogue is more positive. If they didn't like you, if you were always hostile and cruel, then some of her dialogue is more negative about the world outside. It's subtle, but it's true. I can prove it. I've seen it.
But nothing will change the fact that, after the fifth vessel is taken, you will face off with the Narrator and then with the Shifting Mound, and then you have to make your choices. How does the game end? Do you end the universe with her? Do you kill her, once and for all? Do you leave the cabin with her for an unknown world where neither of you are gods? Do you kill her in the cabin and start the entire cycle over once again, either kicking the can down the road or, perhaps, perpetuating a cycle that's always been happening and always will?
No matter what you choose, you will find a page that tells you "Our Song." And it will be yours, and yours alone, and it will matter only to you.
According to deeply-flawed website Goodreads.com, the sex-and-alcohol-loving Buddhist monk Ikkyu once said that "Many paths lead from the foot of the mountain, but at the peak we all gaze at the single bright moon." In other words, just because the ending is the same, everyone can take their own path to get there.
You won't see that in a movie, or in a novel. You might think you're being clever by saying "What about Choose Your Own Adventure novels?", but fuck you, those are just single-player games, and so is Slay the Princess. It's a single-player game, and it has the same final screens no matter what you do, except for the fact that we all took a different path there.
Statistically, given enough players, I'm sure that someone else has or will get to the ending the same way that I first did. And that's okay. Ikkyu didn't say that everybody was unique, and neither shall I.
All I'll say, and what I think Slay the Princess is saying, even if the writers didn't mean for it to, is that your choices matter, even if they don't seem like they do. Even if they don't matter to anyone else.
So choose carefully. It all matters.
