part one
In this universe, when a person turns 21, they gain the ability to communicate with their soulmate telepathically. For the borrower Pepper, this turns out to be quite a shock. word count: 2.9k
“Can you hear me?”
The words floated around Pepper’s mind for a moment, soft and fuzzy as if he was hearing them from a distance.
“Hello? Can you hear this?”
Pepper spun in a circle, searching for the source of the strange voice, but he was completely alone in the secluded area under a floorboard. He tensed up, briefly remembering a myth he had been told as a child, of soulmates and telepathic connections. He hadn’t thought it had been real, but…
“I’ll just try again later.”
After that, the voice went quiet, and the fuzzy feeling in Pepper’s mind vanished. He spent the next few seconds staring around at his surroundings, heart heavy. Once he was certain that he was completely alone, he tightened his grip on his satchel and continued his trek back home.
He could worry about the messages after he rationed out his food for the week.
The second time Pepper’s mind was filled with someone’s else’s voice, he felt more prepared.
The wiry black-haired borrower was sitting in his hammock, a thick piece of fabric being held up by two push pins in the wall. He had been absentmindedly scribbling in his journal when he heard it.
“Hello?”
Pepper bit his lip. He briefly thought back to the myth, stomach currently twisting in knots.
“It’s me. Your soulmate.”
A chill settled into Pepper’s stomach, and he drew his knees closer to his chest.
“Um, if you want to talk back, just interlock your fingers and press them to your chest. And then I’ll be able to hear you.”
Pepper didn’t really understand how moving his hands somehow would allow this mystery voice to hear him, but he knew that being heard was not something borrowers wanted. He drew his bottom lip into his mouth, vaguely wondering if he was going crazy.
The voice had gone quiet for a moment, clearly waiting for him to respond.
Pepper could hear the disappointment as the voice said, “It’s okay if you don’t want to talk. I don’t even know if you can hear this. But, I just wanted to say hi. We’re… We’re soulmates.”
Soulmates? Pepper swallowed hard. Most borrowers go their whole lives without seeing more than fifty others of their kind, and they needed to be incredibly lucky to find someone they liked enough to start a relationship with. The idea that there was another borrower out there, that was supposedly “perfect” for Pepper, was astounding.
What if his soulmate was hundreds of miles away, hiding somewhere across the country? Pepper would never be able to meet them.
“I just turned twenty-one a few days ago. You know, soulmate-connection age. Oh… maybe you’re not twenty-one yet and that’s why you can’t hear me. This is a little embarrassing, then. But I guess if you’re not listening, it doesn’t matter, right?”
Pepper was struggling to follow. He himself was twenty-two. You had to be at least twenty-one to communicate with your soulmate, then?
“I like to sing. I’ve always thought that my soulmate would maybe be a singer too. Or maybe not. I just get the feeling that you are artsy, too, you know?”
The borrower shifted in his hammock, peering down at the journal in his hands. He had ripped up thick sheets of paper and sewn them together with thread. He supposed he did enjoy making things.
“Are you artsy?”
The voice had lifted up a little, clearly hopeful that Pepper would respond. The borrower didn’t move an inch.
“...That’s okay. I’ll tune in later. Remember— interlocked hands on your chest. If you wanna talk.”
Pepper was left in silence. His small chest heaved with uneasy breaths, while tan arms hugged his journal close to his torso.
Despite his apprehension, it was kind of nice to hear about his… “soulmate.” His soulmate might even be sort of brave, considering the fact that he is apparently a singer. Pepper hadn’t met a single borrower that felt comfortable enough to even speak loudly, let alone identify themselves as a singer. A strange feeling of appreciation wormed its way into Pepper’s chest. Maybe this wasn’t so bad.
Maybe it’s just nice to hear from someone, the borrower concluded. He had lived alone in the walls of this apartment for a little over two years, and he couldn’t remember the last time he had had a real conversation with someone.
A smile settling over his face, Pepper continued doodling in his journal.
“Hey. My sister came to visit today.”
Pepper nearly jumped out of his skin. He spun around, tiny hands clutched around a grape twice the size of his head. When he realized that he was alone in the kitchen, he relaxed microscopically.
“She just wanted to stop by to wish me a belated happy birthday. And she made me a bracelet, which is so sweet! I moved out a few years ago, and since we’re both so busy it’s hard to see each other. It was really nice.”
Pepper’s mind wandered to his own sister. She was a few years older than him, but they could be twins, sharing tan skin and shaggy black hair, two dark features that every borrower wished to have. Basil, Pepper's sister, had moved out when Pepper was fourteen. He had seen her twice since then, on the rare occasion she was able to stop home and say hi.
He really did understand his soulmate. If his hands weren’t holding the grape, he might have considered saying so.
“I don’t have any roommates, or anything, so I’m alone a lot.”
Pepper was trekking across the counter, one arm holding the grape to his hip. He reached the edge, where his hook was latched onto the smooth surface.
“I’m an introvert, so it’s fine, but it’s definitely nice to hear from the people that I care about. You know?”
It only took a few seconds for Pepper to slide all the way to the floor, carefully holding the grape in one arm to prevent it from falling.
“My sister asked me if I had heard from my soulmate, now that I’m twenty-one. She’s really into the soulmate thing, but she’s only eighteen, so she has to wait. Anyways, I told her that I had reached out to you, but I think you might be younger than me, and you can’t hear me, maybe. Or you’re just shy?”
Pepper found the crack at the base of the counter and eased his way through, yanking his hook and his grape with him. He was met by a familiar darkness, and he subconsciously relaxed in the safety of the walls.
“Anyways, well… It’s late, and I should probably get some sleep. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight,” Pepper murmured, wishing he had the strength to truly say it back.
It had been a week since Pepper had first heard from his soulmate. Since then, the soft voice had entered his mind a total of five times— chatting about his sister, sometimes, or his favorite songs. Pepper was always left with a fondness, followed by a feeling of guilt, that he was ignoring his brave soulmate for the safety of his own comfort.
He was afraid that he would fall in love with this person. He would tell them all of his secrets and thoughts and desires, only to learn that they were miles and miles apart. Hell, even if his soulmate lived down the street, they would still be out of reach for a borrower.
But— why give up before even trying? Was it really that harmful to say hello?
So, Pepper pressed his shaky hands against his chest, feeling the pounding of his heart. He closed his eyes, focusing on the fuzziness in the back of his mind, tuning in. “Hello? Are you there?”
He felt his own heartbeat quicken as a voice immediately responded, bright and ecstatic.
“Yes! Hello! Oh my gosh!”
Pepper let out a sharp breath, a mix of a gasp and a laugh. Biting his tongue, he tried again. “It’s… nice to meet you. I’ve been wanting to talk back to you, but… I don’t know, I get scared every time. Um, yeah. I’m Pepper…”
Something strange happened, when he tried to say his name. He knew that he was saying “Pepper,” but as he did so, static had filled his mind, clouding the word.
“Oh! I guess you didn’t know. Soulmate telepathy doesn’t let you say your name. I didn’t catch that, I’m sorry.”
Huh.
“Why? That’s dumb.” Pepper’s brow furrowed.
“I don’t know. The universe makes the rules.”
Pepper laughed again, pressing his hands further against his chest. The warmth of his hammock surrounded him, but he was solely focused on the warmth of the voice in his mind. “Well, I guess I’ll always be a mystery to you.”
“I guess you will,” his soulmate said teasingly. Pepper smiled to himself, thinking hard before proposing his next question.
“Did you have a good day?”
“I did! I called my sister.”
Pepper blinked curiously. “You called her?”
“Yeah. To say thank you again, for the bracelet. I haven’t taken it off since she gave it to me!”
The borrower stared at the wall, trying to fit the pieces together in his mind. “Do you live close to her?”
“Oh yeah, she’s only like twenty minutes away. I just called her because I was out all day.”
Pepper nodded to himself. That made more sense, he supposed. If his soulmate lived that close to his sister he could easily call out to her while on a borrowing trip.
“I have a sister too,” Pepper admitted. “But I haven’t seen her in… maybe a year? She’s six years older than me, and once we both moved out, well… you know how it is. We are not nearly as close as you and your sister.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Were you two close growing up?”
“Yeah, definitely. We actually lived right next to a bakery, and she would always come home with the best stuff. She got me a big piece of this brownie thing once, and it was incredible.”
Pepper found himself smiling at the memory of Basil coming home with a big chunk of chocolate, beaming as she showed it to her younger brother. They had shared it and it had been the best thing Pepper had ever tasted.
He wondered how Basil was doing.
“Aww, that’s sweet! She seems like a nice sister.”
“She was.” Pepper relaxed into the hammock, closing his eyes. “I’d like to run out and visit her soon. Especially now that it’s getting warmer, and I can actually walk outside without drowning in snow.”
“Yeah, I get that,” his soulmate said with a note of amusement. “I still have a bruise on my leg from where I slipped on ice last December.”
Pepper raised an eyebrow. His soulmate must really be brave, going outside in the middle of winter! “I couldn’t imagine trying to walk on ice.”
“No need to rub it in,” his soulmate giggled, and he once again was left in confusion.
When Pepper said nothing, his soulmate continued. “So, how old are you? What do you do for fun?”
Pepper chewed his lip. “I’m twenty-two. And I’m crafty, I guess? I like to draw sometimes, when I have the materials. I really like to make things.”
“I knew you would be artsy!” His soulmate said brightly. “What do you make?”
Pepper stared around his room from the height of his hammock. A scrappy rug, fairy lights, and assorted articles of clothing surrounded him. “Decorations for my room. I’ve really started getting into clothing, too. I just finished up a jacket, actually.”
“That’s so cool!”
“…Thank you,” Pepper responded, mildly surprised.
“I’m not very good with my hands, but I’m pretty good at singing. I like to perform.”
“That’s cool, too,” Pepper admitted. “I’ve never sang in my life. I don’t really know how, and I would be so scared of getting caught.”
“Aw, that’s okay. I used to be super shy when I was younger, but the stage fright eventually goes away, I promise!”
Pepper blinked up at the ceiling. “…Thanks?”
“Oh— sorry, I should probably go. I’ve got to get up early tomorrow. But… I’ll talk to you tomorrow..? If that’s okay?”
“Yes,” Pepper said immediately.
“Okay, great! Then I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight!”
“Goodnight.”
Pepper’s heart was pounding out of his chest.
He stood stiffly, back pressed against a metal thermos. He was currently stranded on the counter in the early hours of the morning, and he had greatly underestimated how early the resident human would be getting up today.
The heavy sound of footsteps filled his ears. Pepper swallowed hard, praying that the human wouldn’t touch his thermos of coffee anytime soon. The human usually forgot his coffee half the time, as sporadic as he was. Hopefully Pepper will be lucky this time.
The borrower shuffled to the side, peering around the edge of the thermos. His stomach chilled at the sight of the massive human.
The human’s hands alone dwarfed Pepper in size. A torso the size of a house moved around the room, easily carrying an enormous backpack that Pepper couldn’t even imagine trying to budge. A head of sand-colored hair was turned away from the borrower, much to his relief. The human seemed to be typing something on his phone.
The human left his apartment at different times each day, which was frustrating for Pepper. The borrower wouldn’t have ventured out this morning if he knew the human would be up before the sun rose.
Pepper’s gaze darted over to a thin crack on the wall, a few feet to the side. He could make a dash for it, but it would take about fifteen seconds to get there, and the human could turn around in any of those seconds… Pepper could wait for the human to leave the apartment, but the human might not leave without grabbing his thermos first…
The sound of keys jangling filled his ears, and Pepper’s blood ran cold. He begged for the human to leave.
He heard enormous footsteps receding, moving away from him, and he nearly sobbed in relief before a murmur filled the air. “Fuck, almost forgot—“
It took less than three seconds for the human to cross the room, and Pepper slapped his hands over his mouth at the sight of massive pale fingers closing around the thermos. He instinctively flinched away, staring up as the thermos was pulled away, leaving him stranded on the counter with a human who was sure to snatch him up the moment he laid his eyes on the defensiveness borrower—
But… the human wasn’t even looking at him.
Pepper swayed on his feet, staring at the human who was now opening his front door and stepping outside. The human had grabbed his thermos and left the apartment without even sparing a glance in Pepper’s direction.
The front door clicked shut, and the second Pepper was alone he collapsed to his knees, hugging his chest. Heavy gasps left his mouth, as the terror of the last thirty seconds left his body in shaky waves. “Oh my god, oh my god…”
He swallowed thickly, squeezing his eyes shut. Without even realizing what he was doing, he slid his hands to his chest, clasping his fingers together. “Hello? Hello? Are you there?”
It took a few agonizing seconds to receive a response, and Pepper almost sobbed in relief at the familiar soft voice that filled his mind. “Hey, what’s up?”
“I almost just got caught,” Pepper blurted, heart pounding.
“What do you mean?”
“Caught! I almost got caught! I was out, and the bean almost saw me, I almost— oh my god, I could have… this could have been so bad. Oh my god.”
His soulmate was silent for a long time, and Pepper’s stomach twisted in apprehension, a feeling that quickly morphed into irritation, that his soulmate would just ignore him when he was so clearly upset.
“Did you hear me?” He demanded with more anger that he intended.
“Uh, yeah, I— yeah, I heard you, I’m just a little confused. Sorry. Are you okay?”
Pepper swallowed hard, squeezing his eyes shut. Suddenly filled with the horrifying thought that the human could return at any moment, he jumped to his feet, beginning to jog towards the crack in the wall. “Yeah… Yeah, I’m fine now, he’s gone. I— I’m sorry, I’m just shaken up. That was just a really close call.”
“Uh,” his soulmate said. “Were you in danger? Did someone attack you? Maybe you should call nine-one-one?”
Pepper nearly laughed at the absurdity. “Of course I was in d—“
He skidded to a halt suddenly. “…nine… one one?”
“Yeah? Oh, I’m sorry— are you not in America? What’s your emergency line?”
Ice seeped into Pepper’s veins. His hands remained clasped against his chest, although they were significantly shakier than they were before.
“Are you… a…”
Pepper couldn’t bring himself to ask. Despite being alone, terror was sinking into his stomach like a rock. There was no way. No way!
“I’m sorry,” Pepper said numbly, staggering towards the crack in the wall. “I have to go.”
“Wha— are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Sorry. I promise I’m fine. Bye.”
His hands fell from his chest as he squeezed into the walls, immediately stumbling against a piece of wood to catch his balance. His soulmate was sending him a confused farewell, but he could barely hear it over the blood pounding in his ears.
“I can’t believe this,” Pepper heaved, burying his face in his hands.  “My— my soulmate is a human?”
thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed :]

I want to read an absolutely ridiculous Gt soulmates!au.
Like, picture this.
You're going about your day, and bump into someone on the street. You turn to say something but they make some snotty comment and you get into a bit of a confrontation with them. Nothing serious but enough that it leaves you in a foul mood.
What a cold personality. Who raised someone who could be that rude to a stranger? Maybe you fantasize a little about them tripping into a puddle. You definitely replay that argument over in your head a few times, wishing you could replay that moment and say that banger of a comeback you thought of just a smidge too late.
As the day passes, this mood lingers. Isn't it funny how one bad interaction can just ruin a perfectly good d-
You hear a yelp.
You turn to face the direction, and it's like the world falls out from underneath your feet. You almost missed them initially, but you caught the movement at the very periphery of your vision. That nasty person from earlier stands right at your feet, tiny ... and absolutely terrified.
No.
No. No. No. No.
Not them.
Why them??
It wasn't supposed to go like this! You'd spent so long daydreaming of the day you'd meet your soulmate. It was supposed to be cute and fun. Maybe a little awkward, but this???
You feel your stomach in knots as you look at them. A thought that a piece of your soul that small was with them right now was chilling. Maybe it was a mistake? Could you accidentally drop a bit of your soul?
You sigh. As much as you want to doubt it, you know there's no doubting... something to do with compatible frequencies that create an attraction? You never paid much attention during that class in high-school...
You bend down to get a better look at them. They aren't bad looking... quite the opposite... and at this size? They're pretty cute. You take a deep breath. Everybody had bad days, right? They're probably-
"This has got to be a mistake."
Nope. That's it. They suck.
------
OK OK OK LIKE???
When you meet your soulmate this sort of metaphysical reaction occurs where the souls have complimentary frequencies and this somehow acts as a sort of magnetic reaction, pulling a small bit of someone's soul away from their whole. That small bit of the soul then physically manifests as them.
BASICALLY, soulmate au where your soulmate finds a tiny version of you, and vice versa.
You don't share a consciousness with your shed bit of soul, maybe some kind of shared dreams or something, so you have no idea what some part of you is dealing with.
AHH I love it. It's stupid and silly and adorable.
Angst potential?? Fluff potential?? CONSTANT SIZE SWAP DYNAMICS???
I beg of thee
Please use this silly au.
SoulSwap au? SoulShard? I dunno.
If anyone has any cutesy names for this, please share

Giant/tiny dream
Okay so basically what happened is Grumpy is a human and Sunshine (in the dream they didn’t really have names, so I’m just going off vibe) is a borrower/tiny. The two meet by chance and fall in love, but this is where the hijinks ensues. They finally have their first kiss after a long and arduous slow burn, where Sunshine is accidentally kidnapped, but that’s not the point.
So they have their first kiss and then fall asleep. Why do they fall asleep? Because they’re soulmates, and soulmates switch bodies after the first kiss. (Why? Idk, the dream wasn’t very specific.)
So Sunshine (the tiny) wakes up in Grumpy’s (the human/giant) body and full on panics. They remember falling asleep on Grumpy’s lap and all the sudden they’re waking up and he’s not there. What they don’t know is Grumpy is in their body and just unceremoniously tumbled off of their own lap into the couch (he’s fine, just not visible).
Sunshine however immediately rushes over to Grumpy’s roommate in a panic, not fully realizing what’s happened. They just know that Grumpy is gone.
And that’s where the dream ended.

It's Sunday night so why not read part 3/3 of "Zoro gets lost because he uses the red string of fate like a compass" ? Part 1 here, part 2 here, ao3 here Hope you guys like it ;)
Sanji is being weird. Ever since that day on Thriller Bark, he’s definitely been avoiding him, only interacting with him when strictly necessary (to feed him), never making eye contact for too long, and leaving as quickly as he came.
Shitty cook. What’s his fuckin’ deal?
Zoro lets it sit for a couple of days, too injured to move out of the infirmary or to do anything about it anyways, before he comes up with a potential reason for the cook’s strange behaviour. It must be because of the self-sacrifice thing. It can’t be because of that... other thing, he muses.
Back at the Baratie, when they’d first met, Zoro could immediately tell that Sanji didn’t know. The blonde couldn’t see it, or feel it...nothin’. It was painfully obvious. (It didn’t make him feel hollow at all!) So, he hadn’t said anything- what would’ve been the point? It wasn’t like it mattered to him either way: his goal was already fixed. Become the world’s greatest swordsman. Then, maybe look for the person tied to his soul.
He didn’t expect to meet them so soon.
He also didn’t expect for him to come aboard and join the crew. Sure, the ridiculous moron grew on him much faster than he expected, and he took great satisfaction from having someone of comparable strength look over their crew with him, someone who could handle him, his power, his ambition, his rough edges and biting words. He wouldn’t deny that. But he also hated how the proximity made his little...navigation problem way worse.
Learning that Sanji grew up on a moving restaurant in the East Blue certainly explained why the thread moved around so much. Being on the same boat, however, brought the realisation that the closer they were to each other, the more the thread moved- and when living in such close quarters, stuck on a ship, the thread was constantly bobbing around as the cook moved around his kitchen, the pantry, the bridge, happily serving freshly prepared meals and snacks to his crewmates.
If there was one good use that he got out of this, it's that he could always find the best time to sneak some booze from the kitchen- the red string a reliable indicator of Sanji being busy elsewhere. The downside was, of course, all the teasing his nakama, especially that witch Nami, made him endure. And it’s not like he could even reciprocate the teasing the day her tattoo turned the exact shade of a certain Miss Wednesday’s hair. He couldn’t risk his debt going up.
Even when off the ship, Zoro’s sense of direction had never been as comically bad before. Using the red thread to move around was like breathing to him, and it constantly caught his eye, getting him lost- even in the midst of battle- going up the wrong stairs, running off in the wrong direction, finding himself in the most unlikely of places because the damn cook wouldn’t. stop. moving. Around. (Somewhere in his mind, Zoro was aware that he couldn’t expect Sanji to not move- he just was oh so tired of getting lost.)
He noticed that Sanji never had problems finding him. Zoro’s chest felt light whenever he did. He didn’t linger on it.
His chest feels anything but light now that Sanji is avoiding him like the plague.
Strong enough to stand after a few days’ rest, Zoro follows the red thread to the galley. He pushes the door open and catches the sweet smell of Sanji’s stress baking. Of course.
“I’m not giving you booze, marimo.” Sanji doesn’t look up from behind the counter, hands meticulously working to decorate whatever baked goods he’s whipped up today.
“’m not here for booze, cook.”
“Then get the hell out of my kitchen, it’s not lunchtime yet.”
Zoro regards him cooly, standing between the counter and the dining table, and waits for him to look up. He has time.
“...You gonna stand here all day, shithead?”
“Mn.”
Sanji sighs and meets his gaze with an affronted look, hands finally stilling in his decorating.
“You’ve been avoiding me.” Zoro’s not one to beat around the bush. “Is this about what happened with Kuma?”
Sanji stays silent, absentmindedly worrying his lower lip.
“Look, I’m never gonna apologise for knockin’ you out and doing what I did- especially since everything turned out ok in the end. The crew couldn’t lose you, curls. This was my burden to bear. How can we move past this-”
His blue eyes look furious, like burning ice. “We can’t,” he bites out. Sanji reaches for his cigarettes, soothing himself with the familiar motion of placing it between his lips. It wobbles as he speaks. “And the fuck do you even mean, they couldn’t lose me- they can’t lose you, dumbass. You still have to beat Mihawk and become the greatest, right?”
Zoro sighs, tuning the cook out a bit as he nags him. Why Sanji can never see his own value, his importance to the crew, to him, he doesn’t know. He knows it’s not something he can fix with just a few words.
“Why would you even,” Sanji starts losing his words from his frustration. His thumb and forefinger pinch his cigarette and he waves it around angrily. “you silly moss- I can’t understand you!”
“That’s my line. Why did you try to take my place? Spoutin’ all that bullshit about finding another cook, huh?”
Sanji blanches, mouthing silent words as he looks for a way to answer Zoro’s question. His visible eye flits to Zoro’s hand on his chest. The swordsman notices.
“Y-you wouldn’t understand...” his face contorts painfully, brow furrowed.
Zoro takes it all in. Where he’s looking, the way he’s been acting strange...it was more than what happened on Thriller Bark, then. “Oh yeah? Wanna bet?”
“Not really, no.”
“All right. Then why don’t I let you in on a little secret.”
Zoro’s face is impassible as ever, and the cook seems intrigued.
“...sure, why the hell not.” Then, to break the tension, “You gonna tell me the secret to your ridiculous hair colour?”
“Better. ‘m gonna tell you why I get lost all the time.”
“...so you are self-aware. Good job, marimo. Maybe next you’ll figure out basic hygiene.” Sanji’s jeer doesn’t mask how intently he’s waiting for Zoro to reveal his secret.
The swordsman comes closer to the counter, placing his forearms and hands on the cool granite. Sanji’s eye follows the movement and seems to linger on the thread before returning to meet his own. This helps steel the swordsman in his decision.
“You see, the reason I get turned around and lost is ‘cause I don’t navigate like most folk do. Growing up, I relied on my inner compass, and it worked just fine- I could always tell where North was, back then. No matter where I was.”
“What changed?”
“My north started movin’ around,” he huffs.
“That doesn’t make any sense.”
“Yeah, didn’t make sense to me either. But then my friend told me that the red string on my finger wasn’t a compass.”
From how close they’re standing; Zoro hears Sanji’s breath hitch. He grins and brings his hand up from the counter, wiggling his pinky.
“Y-you can see it?” Sanji’s face is twisted with shock and confusion.
“Always have.”
“But then why- why didn’t you say anything?”
“Could tell that you didn’t see it too. Didn’t wanna make a fuss.”
Sanji’s mouth opens on an inhale- ready to retort, but Zoro cuts him off before he gets the chance. “Think, cook. How would’ve you had reacted if I’d told you?”
That shuts him up. Head slightly hanging, his unlit cigarette is in pieces, wrung out by his nervous hands.
Always a contrarian, Zoro feels calm, his chest now warm and light like bread fresh from the oven. He can feel his lips stretch into a lazy smile despite himself. The shitty cook can see it. He can see the thread. It’s a start.
“Sanji.”
His blue eyes are cloudy, distant, deep in thought, and it takes him a few seconds to realise that swordsman said his name. His actual name. Zoro’s chest feels a little tight at the cute blush that dusts his cheeks, spreading to his ears. Tempers the urge to tease him about it, watch it deepen. He should probably say the important stuff first, do what he came here to do in the first place.
“I won’t apologise for Thriller Bark because I'm selfish. I couldn’t bear to lose you.” Zoro prefers to speak with actions, not words, and he hopes that this action was loud enough.
Listen, cook. Please listen.
Sanji ponders his words for a moment, eyes searching his face with an intensity that keeps Zoro rooted to the spot. Under his crisp white button up, his chest rises and falls with a deep, deep sigh. He seems to come to a decision, and Zoro can’t deny his sweaty palms are itching to fidget with his earrings as he watches Sanji join him on his side of the counter. His footsteps suddenly feel quite loud, the light a bit too bright- but Zoro keeps his face schooled in a neutral expression and turns to face his crewmate.
The thread is short, now, their bodies, close.
“You won’t apologise.”
Zoro shakes his head no.
“Then you better be ready to make it up to me your whole life, you shitty marimo.”
I hear you.
Zoro’s heart beats like war drums, victorious and bold and indomitable, blood racing, making his body sizzle with restless energy. He watches in awe as Sanji’s hand- the one with a delicately corded red rope tied to the pinky- reaches for his own, interlocking their hands between them. It looks nice, the red string bright and proud against their skins’ neutral tones. Evidence of their unique bond.
His face must be saying something because Sanji looks handsomely mischievious, pearly whites peeking out from an idiotic grin.
“So, you’re gonna kiss me or what?”
Zoro doesn’t need to be asked twice, and for once, does as Sanji says.

Dancing Hug
back in the universe where borrowers meet their perfect partner in a dream. I need to update my master list, but this is a little follow up to Mira and Corus meeting each other.
Corus wants to dance with Mira.
Dancing Hug
Mira and Corus stood close together in a ballroom. The spotlight on them as Corus led them in a waltz. Music crescendoed in time with each step. The light of the chandelier hanging over them changed colors as they moved. Red, blue, purple, and more. A scene that he’d created just for her. Where the dance lessons he’d taken as a child could finally be used. A thing Mira could-
“Ow!” Corus lost his thoughts as he winced. They’d been at this for hours, maybe hours. He hadn’t gotten a good idea of how time passed in the dreams yet. Mira always seemed to know.
“Sorry,” she mumbled.
“It’s ok, you’re getting better.” He smiled down at her. Continuing to try and lead her steps to the music that played from nothing. “Just follow my lead, we’ll get this.”
“You’ve said that every time we do this.” Mira’s hold on his hands tightened. A glint in her eyes followed by a huff only solidified her annoyance. “I don’t get this. Dancing is just weird. How are you leading me when I can’t even look down at your feet? All of this is just too…”
The silence hung heavy. Corus leaned his forehead against hers. “Too human?”
The pink of her eyes disappeared behind pale eyelids. She didn’t speak, merely let her tight hold on his hands ebb. Eventually her arms fell to her sides and Corus stood with his arms kept up in their poor attempt to waltz. Mira pulled away, creating the distance refused to close. Everything he tried to show her failed. Each time she wound up confused… The worst times she didn’t talk to him, barely slept, for days.
“Mira, I just wanted to show you something I had been taught,” he whispered. That didn’t change the distance. Mira’s hesitance reflected in the world. The music stuttered, constant stops and starts. The nice ballroom filled with cracks. Plaster fell to the ground, even the chandelier shattered into a glittering dust.
“It’s just a human thing. It wouldn’t matter in the real world,” she said while wrapping her arms around herself. A tight hug that closed off the progress the two were making. The life Corus wouldn’t stop trying to build. Times like this she looked as small as her true height.
“It’s not a human thing, it’s a me thing. I have another idea.”
Corus stepped forward and offered his hand. Mira stared at him, but the ballroom continued to fall apart. Eventually it even grew. Shadows came to tower over them. Turning their private dance into a spectacle. The spotlight on them burned his skin.
“Corus I don’t… I’m not going to get it. There’s just too much and I don’t-”
He closed the distance, wrapping his arms around her and placing his lips against her ear. “Wake up with me.”
Corus blinked, happy to see the real world again. The world where Mira slept on the pillow next to him. The precious seconds he could watch her sleep had no match. He’d never give them up. At these times, the stern look on her face disappeared. A soft smile, her brow relaxed, her posture calm. No hint of the nerves she held inside constantly.
Those same signs told him when she started to wake up. Slowly her posture tensed, making her look smaller. A crease he doubted made sense for him to see appeared on her brow. The smile changed into a thin line. Finally the pink eyes blinked open, adjusting to the world before landing on him. Corus used a finger to pet the hair splayed out around her. It caused a spark of fear until she realized it was just him, just the human she trusted… The one who loved her.
“So what’s the plan?” she croaked. The tiny voice always had an edge to it. A warning that she couldn’t be taken advantage of. Corus loved that edge, loved everything about her.
“Give me a second,” he whispered.
He reached over the pillow Mira laid upon to his desk. A few taps woke up the screen of his phone. He purposely left it leaning against the wall so he could do this, just in case. A swipe of his password and the music app appeared. One quick tap to hit play and the same waltz music from the dream started. The small noise from Mira made him smile.
Next he sat up. A few movements to bounce Mira, each made her glare at him. Each made him smirk at her. He climbed to his feet then placed his hand down next to her. If she couldn’t make dancing work in the dream world, he’d make it work in reality.
“May I have this dance?” he asked. Mira shook her head, he knew all the objections racing through her mind. “Trust me, give this dance a try.”
Mira huffed before climbing to her feet. Slow, stiff steps forward until she reached his fingers. A nervous glance followed by, “You may.” Then her miniscule weight landed on his palm.
Corus wasted no time in bringing her up from the bed. He placed her tiny body against his neck, hugging her tightly to himself. His other arm spread wide as though he had a partner. Then he danced, a simple one two movement. Mira stayed frozen for a short period, not long enough for the song to end.
“Corus, what are you doing?” she squirmed as she spoke.
“I’m dancing with you,” he hummed. The song stayed as the only noise for a minute. As it faded to a new one she squirmed more.
“This is ridiculous, you’re just dancing with yourself.”
“No, you’re my partner. Leaning against my neck. It’s the same as when I tried to slow dance with you and held you close.”
“It’s not the same!”
“Is it different because you can’t try to break my toes anymore?”
“No! Just…” The squirming stopped. Corus slowed his own steps. Carefully, he wrapped his fingers around Mira and pulled her into his view. The damp spots on her face were almost too painful. “If anyone saw you they’d say you’re crazy. This… Maybe we shouldn’t be pushing this. We can both walk away still, a borrower will enter my dreams and you can forget about me. Meet someone the human way.”
“Mira, I don’t care what others see, what someone might say. The second we met I knew you were the only person I could love. I don’t plan to walk away from you.”
“I don’t… I’m not-”
“Don’t say it.” He brought his hand up to his eyes. A quick tilt of his palm left her sitting in the open. Just his fingers beneath her prone form. “Whatever it is, I know you’re wrong. You’re the only one I care about. I want to dance with you, the same dances I had been taught. The ones we will share in the dreams as I take you to all the things I want us to experience together.”
“I don’t understand you.”
Corus smiled. The smile turned to a smirk as he pulled his hand close. Mira’s eyes narrowed, but she didn’t stop him. She had about one second to object before he made his decision. The hand holding her pressed against his cheek. As much pressure as she could handle. The strongest hug he could give her.
“What are you doing!?” she shouted. No squirms, no fighting, she wasn’t trying to get away.
“Hugging the best woman I’ve ever met,” he laughed. They stayed quietly like that. Corus knew if anyone walked in they’d see him holding his hand against his face. A strange sight for an outsider. That would never matter to him. Mira was more than he could have ever hoped to find.
She knew him. Knew the things he could do. Saw the darkest parts of humans. Even then she gave him a chance. She trusted his words about his anger. Slept next to him without fear. Blushed when he let his own steps grow heavier than they had to be. Worried about his own view of their relationship.
“...do you still want to dance?” she mumbled. Corus moved her away and smiled at her.
“If you’ll be my partner.”
“...I will.”
This time Corus moved slower. Carefully cupping his hand against his heart. Leaving her space to move a bit more, but still hugging her to him. Mira was perfect. That was the only thought in his head as he started to waltz once more with his tiny girlfriend hugged against his heart.

blehh i hope this isn't too much for a request as a prompt ? idk I'm just mashing neat tropes together
mouse hybrid tommy avian wilbur soulmate au ? maybe just like a short reveal ?? aaa
I love this prompt! This also made me realize I don’t think I’ve ever written a soulmate au before? This was fun to write though! I hope you enjoy!
Warnings: Fear of death, fear of being eaten, being trapped
 Word Count: 1152
____________________________________________________________
Tommy banged against the thick plastic of the box he found himself in. He even tried to claw his way out but the trap held firm. It made sense though, after all, it was a mouse trap.
Tommy collapsed onto the ground as the exhaustion from trying to escape for the last hour came at him at full force. When he caught his breath, he brought his knees to his chest, his tail coming to curl around one of his legs. Tommy didn’t want to accept it, but he was completely and utterly trapped.
He knew he should have left as soon as he heard the owner of the house mention a pest problem. Actually, no, he should have left the second he realized the owner of the home was an avian hybrid. But Tommy had been too desperate for shelter and so he stayed despite his instincts. It wasn’t like he had anywhere else to go.
That was the problem with being a mouse hybrid or any hybrid that wasn’t considered ‘normal’ size. There was always a good chance that the bigger hybrids would see them as pests or-or even food, if their hybrid natures ended up being that of predator and prey. Sure, the smaller hybrids lived in colonies, hidden away from any bigger hybrids but if you were ever exiled from a colony, then there was really nowhere else for you to go.
Of course, Tommy had been exiled and had no choice but to act like an actual mouse. Living in the walls of a bigger hybrid’s house and scavenging in order to survive.
And now he was here. Trapped and most likely going to be eaten when the avian hybrid gets home.
Tears formed and fell and he buried his head in his knees, quietly sobbing at his fate.
A tingling sensation on his arm caused him to pause, however. He lifted his head and looked down at his arm. Hey, how are you doing? Was written across it, having just appeared.
 His soulmate.
Tommy’s breath hitched when he realized he would never get to meet them. Never get to actually know their name. Of course, he never really counted on meeting them. Sure, they could be another tiny hybrid but there was also a chance they were a big one and based on things his soulmate brought up, it was more likely he was big.
But even still, Tommy had hoped deep down they could still meet. That his soulmate wouldn’t care he was a mouse hybrid. That he would be seen as a person instead of a pest.
But now that hope was gone. Because Tommy was going to die.
Tommy reached into his pocket and brought out a marker. Or, well, the very tip of one, fashioned in a way that it wouldn’t get his hands dirty with the color red. He took a deep breath and began to write.
Not good, big man. I…I think this is it for me.
What? What do you mean by that?
Tommy hesitated on the next bit, but knew he had to tell his soulmate. It was now or never.
I’m a mouse hybrid. I got exiled from my colony. I decided to live in a big hybrid’s home and they decided to set up mouse traps. I got caught in one.
Tommy quickly wiped his tears away so they wouldn’t smudge his writing. He looked down at the feeling of more writing appearing.
What? I mean, that’s…that doesn’t mean you’re going to die. The hybrid could let you go, not all big hybrid’s see tiny ones as pests. I don’t.
That was confirmation then, that his soulmate was a big hybrid. Tommy smiled, at least happy to know that his soulmate didn’t think less of him now that he knew.
I appreciate that big man. But the owner of the house is an avian hybrid. And, well, I’m a mouse hybrid. It’s pretty obvious what’s going to happen to me.
Wait…did you say an avian hybrid?
 Yeah.
Tommy waited a few minutes, expecting his soulmate to say something else but there was nothing. Maybe he was finally realizing how screwed Tommy was.
Tommy was just about to write out his last goodbye to a soulmate he would never meet when he heard the door to the house open. He tensed, dropping his marker in fear. The owner was home.
He heard footsteps and Tommy curled back in on himself, hoping the owner would give him a little bit more time, that he wouldn’t check the trap right away.
 That didn’t happen though.
The footsteps only grew louder and he heard the creak of the pantry door open. There was a pause and then Tommy’s prison was being lifted. It was very quickly put down again though.
“Please…” He thought he heard the avian whisper. He didn’t have time to think about what the avian could have meant by that though because slowly the trap was starting to be opened. Tommy once again buried his face into his knees and shut his eyes tight.
The box was fully open, he could tell from the amount of light behind his eyes. And then a gasp came from the avian and Tommy’s heart skipped a beat.
“Hey, it’s okay…” The avian, his tone soft. Tommy’s heart felt like it was going to explode but he forced himself to look up and meet the avian’s eyes.
Just like his tone, his eyes were soft, nothing like the hungry look Tommy was expecting. Tommy didn’t want to trust it but a feeling deep inside him made him second guess his own instincts.
“I can’t believe all this time…” The avian started to say, trailing off a bit. But that only made Tommy more confused.
“What…What the f*** are you talking about?” Tommy spat out, still unsure of where all this was going.
The avian smiled and for some reason, Tommy didn’t feel threatened by it. “Well…I was just out talking to my soulmate when they mentioned they had gotten trapped. In a mouse trap set by an avian hybrid.”
Tommy’s eyes widened more and more as the avian talked. “Wait…”
The avian lifted up his arm, and plain as day Tommy could see his handwriting in bright red letters. “My name is Wilbur.” The avian said and then he looked sheepish. “Sorry about the mouse trap.”
Wilbur. His soulmate’s name was Wilbur and he was a big hybrid. An avian hybrid. And he didn’t see Tommy as a pest. Tommy smiled back at his soulmate.
“Yeah, well, you’re going to pay for that later.” He said, ideas already forming in his mind. “My name is Tommy.”
They were two hybrids from completely different walks of life. Hybrids of two species who, in the wild, were predator and prey. But somehow, Tommy knew this would work out. He just had a feeling.

Okay so initially this started because @mysterious-gizem wanted bee duo prompts but this felt too perfect to not be bench trio. So I tried to make this fit one of the fake fic titles but nothing fit. SO HAVE THIS REALLY COOL IDEA WHICH I WANT SOMEONE TO MAKE!
Ranboo has Heterochromia eyes.
One Red. One Green.
Its a part of himself he didn't particularly like at first. That was until he started having the visions.
Soulmate visions.
Or at least he thinks they're visions.
Red and Green, as he called them. His soulmates.
Its odd. One day he might see through the eyes of Red: a blonde, chaotic and daring character, and another he'll see through Green: a brunette, still chaotic but a much more easy going than red.
Whenever he sees through one of his soulmates eyes, its always in his house but way bigger. Which is why he's not sure if its a vision, or a really bizarre dream. But they're too consistent and real looking to be dreams.
Its extremely rare that a soulmate has the ability to see through their significant others eyes. Its often only one way too, meaning Red and Green probably can't see through his eyes. And while this would be great for Ranboo, it does nothing but confuse him.
For one, he knows what Red and Green look like. He knows this because it seems that Red and Green have already found each other because he's seen their soul marks, and they're identical to his. A yellow sunflower, a white tulip and a purple allium. But it still made no sense to him how Red and Green saw everything so big!
That is until one night, he wakes up in a panic, after he watched himself tumble over the edge of a cabinet tangled in his rope as Red.
He knows its pointless, but he rushes down stairs in search of Red and Green from where he saw himself fall. He's tried to do this before and found nothing, but he couldn't help the dread that bubbled up inside of him as he rounded the corner to the kitchen.
And that's when his eyes look with two sets of small beady eyes. There's a small person dangling from a rope as a second one is trying to help them from up above: both frozen in fear at his presence. Its them.
His soulmates.
They were real, and they were tiny.
Or a world in which soulmates exist and some have the rare ability to see through the others eyes. Just like how Ranboo can see through his platonic soulmates eyes: Tommy and Tubbo, who live in Ranboos walls and have no idea that their 3rd soulmate is the Human they live with.
SEE WHY IT HAD TO BE BENCH TRIO!!! MMMMMMMMMMM SOMEBODY WRITE THIS AND TAG ME! I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER! THIS WOULD JUST BE SO GREAT!

For the Old Friends Soulmates AU, Ikinda want to pull a plot twist with Techno.
Like, boi is adopted and he loves his family a lot but like
What if Techno was a size shifter and just hasn't really bothered with shifting because his family are all human sized?
But with the introduction of some borrowers in the house, he uses his power to investigate?
First off, thank you for remembering and liking one of my really old AUs and inspiring me even more to rewrite some of it, I really appreciate it!
And second omg yes I absolutely love this idea! Techno just never saw a point in mentioning his powers to anyone considering he rarely uses them and it's probably not important enough to really tell anyone so mah, this does change though when Techno starts noticing the signs of a borrower being in the house and when the food he leaves out isn't being taken he actually starts to get worried
Techno knows there's only two scenarios where borrower won't take food and that's if they've already moved out of the house or they're sick and just can't go out to get supplies at the moment, it's been a month since anything's been taken or gone missing but they're still clear evidence of a borrower being inside the house so Techno shrinks down and goes into the walls to find the borrower worried that they might be sick and wanted to see if you could maybe help bring them some food and water
But Techno doesn't find a borrower in the small house in the walls- but he does hear his lil brother talking with someone in his room so he decides it wouldn't be too bad of idea to be a bit nosy and walks down the tunnels eventually finding his brother's room and is very confused by the site he sees
His brother is just laying on the floor staring up the ceiling and talking to a borrower that's just sitting on his chest we'll a different borrower naps on his chest....Techno just slowly goes back into the walls and heads back to his room returning back to normal size and tries to process the information he has gained, he doesn't fully understand how the loudest person in the entire house is befriended borrowers- a very quiet and shy species that doesn't really like anything bigger than them -but he did and now Techno has to decide if he wants to share this information with anyone else in the house or just stay out of it

pepper & felix
part seven
Felix goes to his audition. word count: 3.1k
“Alright. I’m ready when you are,” Pepper murmured.
This was, by far, the strangest thing Felix had done in his life.
He was cautious as he took his first step, paying close attention to the almost unnoticeable weight on his left shoulder. He heard Pepper suck in a sharp breath, and the borrower shifted closer to his neck, tightening a tiny hand onto the white collar of Felix’s button-up.
When Pepper had spoken, Felix had nearly jumped out of his skin. That was the clearest he had ever heard Pepper’s voice, and he was thrown off by the heaviness of it. The borrower was undeniably terrified, and Felix honestly would be too if he was suspended on the shoulder of an actual giant.
“Are you sure this is okay?” Felix asked, approaching his front door. Something tiny touched his neck, and it took him a second to realize that it was Pepper’s hand. “This works?”
“Yeah,” Pepper said quickly, shuffling even closer to Felix’s neck. Felix fought the urge to turn his head to look. In his peripheral vision, he could vaguely see that Pepper had wedged himself between the collar of Felix’s button up and the lip of his cardigan, providing security as well as camouflage. Smart. “Now let’s go, I don’t want to make you late.”
“Okay.” Felix took a deep breath and finally opened the front door. He was incredibly self-conscious of his posture and gait as he walked down the hall of his apartment complex, focusing on the little shifts and fidgets on his shoulder. Thankfully, Felix lived on the first floor, and they didn’t need to worry about any stairs.
As he stepped outside and breathed in the cool breeze, he wondered briefly, once again, why Pepper had made this insane offer in the first place. Pepper had never even been held by Felix before this (aside from their devastating first meeting), and the borrower had made it abundantly clear recently that he did not feel comfortable around humans at all. Felix had secretly hoped he’d be the exception, but bringing Pepper to his audition felt a little over-the-top.
“You doing okay?” Felix muttered as he found the sidewalk, walking briskly but steadily. He slipped his hands into his cardigan pocket in an attempt to keep them stable.
Pepper’s voice was bright and clear next to his ear. “Yeah, I… I haven’t been outside in a while. This is… this is nice.”
Felix’s eyebrows raised, and he was grateful that the weather was decent today. It never really occurred to him that Pepper didn’t get a lot of fresh air, but he supposed that made sense.
The walk to the university was fairly peaceful. Felix passed a few people on the way, and in those moments he felt as Pepper squirmed underneath the fabric of his cardigan to hide himself better. Once again, Felix was left to ponder why Pepper would put himself in a situation like this.
Felix hummed his audition song under his breath and fiddled with the strap of his messenger bag, which hung over the opposite shoulder to Pepper. For some reason, it was a bit embarrassing to seem so anxious in front of Pepper. For his vulnerable size, the borrower seemed to be quite emotionally secure.
“Fuck,” Felix mumbled. “I’m gonna fuck this up so bad.”
He suppressed a flinch as a small hand suddenly patted his neck. “No, you won’t,” Pepper’s assured, voice firm. “I’ve heard you sing. They’re gonna love you.”
Felix’s heart warmed, and he exhaled. “...Thank you.” The university came into view, and his heart immediately dropped back into his stomach. His hands tightened into fists in the pocket of his cardigan.
Wanting to focus on something else, he turned his attention back to the small weight swaying slightly on his shoulder. “So… what made you want to come with me, exactly?”
Pepper didn’t immediately respond, so Felix added, “I mean, it’s nice to have you here. But— I’m curious. This doesn’t really seem like something you’d normally do.”
A small throat cleared, and when Pepper spoke, his voice was hesitant. “I… I just want to get to know you more.”
Felix’s eyebrows raised curiously. “You don’t have to come all the way to my university just to get to know me,” he pointed out, trying to keep his voice polite and playful. He briefly wondered if Pepper was being entirely truthful, suspicion flickering in his mind. He pushed it away.
“I wanna see what your life is like,” Pepper added quietly. “And I haven’t been outside of the apartment in forever.”
Felix nodded in response, but his mind was still wandering. Surely that couldn’t be Pepper’s only reason for wanting to join Felix to his audition. The borrower had always been so tense and jumpy around the human… for good reason, too. Neither of them had forgotten how their first meeting had gone down.
Something had significantly changed in Pepper’s opinion on Felix in the past week. How could the borrower change from a twitchy, mouse-like, nervous wreck around Felix to sitting on his shoulder within a few days? All Felix had done for Pepper was offer him some food and leave him alone. Was that really enough to gain the trust of a borrower who had been engrained to fear humans since birth?
Or… did Pepper feel the strange tug towards Felix, that Felix felt towards him? The need to learn everything about him? The emotional bond that left him wanting to protect the borrower with his entire being?
Felix exhaled, immediately pushing away the confusing and uncomfortable thoughts. He had more important things to focus on right now.
Being outside for the first time in over a year was absolutely mesmerizing.
The cool breeze hitting Pepper’s skin was unexpected, but not unpleasant. In the walls, he experienced almost no air flow, and now he suddenly felt as if the wind was going to send him tumbling off of Felix’s shoulder.
Pepper could tell that Felix was trying to walk carefully, but to someone of Pepper’s size, the effort was basically useless. The borrower could feel the subtle rise and fall of Felix’s shoulder every time he took a step, making his heart drop. He greatly appreciated that Felix was walking slower than usual as they stepped foot onto campus.
Other humans filled the area, standing and chatting, sitting and studying, walking and texting. Pepper swallowed hard, subconsciously inching closer to Felix and huddling between Felix’s collar and cardigan. It didn’t conceal him completely, but as long as the other humans didn’t look too closely at Felix, he would stay out of sight.
“This is freaky,” he muttered into Felix’s ear.
Pepper vaguely noticed the shallowness of Felix’s breathing underneath him as the human entered a wide, beige building. A quick, steady thrum rose up next to Pepper’s ear, and after a moment he realized that was Felix’s pulse.
When Felix had asked Pepper why he had joined him, the borrower had struggled to respond. Truthfully, he just… felt drawn to Felix.
No, he just felt drawn to his soulmate. And since his soulmate cared so much about this strange audition, Pepper cared too. Even if his soulmate was a massive human with the power to kill him in a matter of seconds… Pepper truly wanted to see him succeed at the thing he was most passionate about.
A few humans lingered around the hallway ahead, but Felix suddenly avoided them, ducking into a long, barren hallway. Pepper blinked in confusion.
“You alright, man?” Pepper asked quizzically, leaning forward to see Felix’s face better. Once he remembered just how tall Felix was (and how equally long the drop from his shoulder was), he swallowed, shuffling back an inch.
Felix was paler than usual. “Yeah, I…” He lifted a hand to his face, closing his eyes. “Fuck. I don’t want to do this.”
Pepper’s eyebrows shot up. Felix had rambled about this audition and this theater and mermaids (for some reason?) for over an hour last night, and although Pepper barely understood any of it, he could tell that it was important to him.
“Yes you do,” Pepper argued. Felix swallowed, and strangely enough, Pepper could see it. “You’ve practiced for weeks. This is everything to you.”
The human’s voice trembled as he spoke. “Exactly, I… I just don’t feel prepared for this at all, I’m gonna fuck it up, I’m gonna…”
“We just talked about this on the walk here,” Pepper pointed out, gray eyes searching Felix’s jawline. It was oddly fascinating to see a human scared, even if it hurt him a little to know that it was Felix. “Not to sound like a stalker, or anything… but… I’ve been hearing you sing for a year. So I know you’re talented.”
Felix blinked. He still couldn’t turn to face Pepper directly, his blue eyes lingering on the wall across from him.
“You have an incredible voice,” Pepper continued, reaching over to pat Felix’s neck. “I wouldn’t have come with you if I thought you were gonna fail. I want to see them cast you as the mermaid.”
Felix snorted, as if he was laughing at a joke, but Pepper didn’t really get it. “Ah— well, I’m not…” The human faltered, the corners of his lips twitching into a smile. “Um… thanks, Pepper.”
Pepper nodded encouragingly. “This is why I’m here. How much time do you have?”
“Um…” Felix tugged his phone from his pocket, peering down at it. “Ten minutes.”
“Okay.” The borrower suddenly chewed his lip. “Should I hide in your bag now?”
“Uh— oh, right.” Felix shot a look down the hallway, ensuring that nobody was around, before he opened the flap of his messenger bag. Pepper leaned forward, craning his neck to see the bag, which rested on Felix’s opposite hip. His heart swelled when he noticed the towel that had been stuffed into the bag for padding.
Felix hesitated, his hand twitching towards his shoulder. “You ready?”
“Yeah.” Pepper took a deep breath, forcing his stomach to settle as the massive hand approached. Felix held his palm up in front of his shoulder, and as Pepper stared blankly at it, he thought, I will never get used to this.
It made him feel better to know that in a few seconds he would be safely secured in a bag, human-free. Steadying himself, Pepper stepped off into Felix’s waiting palm.
Felix moved carefully and slowly. Pepper immediately clung to the fingers around him, vaguely aware that they were his size, and was more than happy to step off five seconds later onto a folded black towel.
“Good luck in there,” the borrower called up, stomach suddenly twisting to see Felix from such a low angle. “You’re gonna do great. Remember that!”
Felix let out a quick exhale, shoulders falling. Pepper hoped he hadn’t stressed the human out by wobbling on his shoulder for the last fifteen minutes. “Thanks, Pepper.” His voice was grateful. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
Gently, the flap of the messenger bag closed, and Pepper was left alone. A trickle of light crept through the top of the bag, allowing the borrower to see a bit of his surroundings.
A black towel scrunched up around him, providing him slight protection from the massive yellow binder, four times his height. Pepper inched away from it slightly, uncomfortable with its size.
A granola bar sat to his left, next to a small white bottle of hand sanitizer. Pepper supposed he should be grateful that Felix’s messenger bag was almost empty.
He could feel the shift of the bag around him, and the slight sway as Felix walked. Pepper distantly hoped that Felix had believed him when he said he had an incredible voice.
“Oh! Felix!”
“Felix!”
The sway of the messenger bag halted as Felix stopped, turning. Pepper’s ears tuned in to the sound of a female voice— no— two female voices. He squinted, trying to differentiate between the two as they spoke.
“Felix—! You’re auditioning soon, right?”
“Me and Breanna just finished our auditions— are you nervous?”
Felix’s voice wobbled. “Yeah, I’m— I’m a little scared,” Felix admitted. “How did your auditions go?”
Pepper hastily shoved at the towel, trying to form it into a pile.
“It was fine,” someone— Breanna?— said. “I forgot some of my lyrics, but I think I played it off okay.”
“You did great,” the other girl interjected. Her voice was sharper than either Felix’s or Breanna’s. “I could hear you in the waiting room. If you don’t get Ursula I will literally riot.”
Pepper huffed as he finally climbed to the top of his newly-made hill, knees digging into the towel. He peeked through a small sliver between the flap and the edge of the bag, trying to locate the source of the voices.
Across from Felix two girls stood, relatively the same height but much shorter than Felix. The sharp-voiced girl had fair skin and long, black, silky hair, vaguely reminding Pepper of a vampire he had seen in a movie once. A girl with dark skin and a soft smile stood next to her, holding a hand to her face.
“Thank you— god, I really hope I get Ursula. And you did amazing, Alice, I just know you’re gonna be Ariel.” Breanna turned to Felix again, eyes bright. “Don’t be nervous. You’re gonna do awesome. Just get in there and blow them away.”
“Thank you,” Felix responded, voice numb. “I hope so.”
Alice and Breanna offered Felix some last quick words of encouragement before leaving together. Felix took a deep breath before continuing down the hallway, where Pepper observed three or four other humans, quiet and tense, lingering outside a door. Felix stopped a small distance away, leaning against the wall, and after a moment a skinny girl left the room with a white binder tucked under her arm.
“Ricky?” A voice called from within the room, too far for Pepper to see clearly. A boy quickly entered and shut the door behind him with a click, leaving the hallway in silence. So, that’s where the auditions are happening?
Even from inside the messenger bag, Pepper could sense Felix’s anxiety. The human was swaying slightly, enough to subtly rock the bag back and forth, and if Pepper really focused he could hear the fiddling of Felix’s fingers.
The other boy’s voice, muffled by the door, filled the hallway in song. Felix took another deep breath.
Pepper felt bad for Felix, knowing that he was about to feel judged by the students in the hallway as well. However, a small part of him was happy, knowing that the borrower would be able to listen in on Felix’s audition. Despite still being unsure of what was going on, Pepper was rooting for him.
The other boy– Ricky– finished his song, and it only took another minute for him to exit the room, smirking. Pepper didn’t think he was that good.
“Felix?”
It took a concerningly long time for the messenger bag’s flap to open. Pepper felt the shifting of the fabric around him and looked up, seeing Felix’s pale face, and the borrower gave him a thumbs up. The human sent him a gentle but nervous smile as he closed his hand around his yellow binder.
Pepper didn’t risk saying anything out loud, but he placed a quick hand on Felix’s thumb, giving it a few quick pats. The human exhaled shakily in response.
Felix was cautious not to knock into Pepper as he pulled out his binder and carefully shut the flap of his bag. A moment later, the messenger bag was shifting and lowering, until it was placed gently on the floor against the wall. Pepper quickly scrambled up to peek outside.
Seeing Felix’s long legs at floor level sent a small jolt of stress into Pepper’s heart, but he quickly ignored it. The door shut behind Felix after a moment, and Pepper settled against the towel, listening intently.
When Felix began singing, Pepper’s lips couldn’t help but smile. The human’s voice, although slightly shaky, was clear and defined through the door.
Pepper never got to hear Felix sing all out before, considering the human chose to hum or sing softly for the sake of not disturbing his neighbors. Knowing that Felix was capable of projecting made the borrower’s heart swell. My soulmate is so talented.
The song was short and simple, but it told a story. Pepper’s heart was racing when his human finally went quiet after a long, pretty note. It’s over?
Felix had said it would be short, but Pepper wasn’t actually expecting to see him leave the room so quickly. Long, nervous fingers fiddled with his yellow binder as Felix approached, swiftly kneeling down in front of the bag to pick it up.
Woah. Pepper kept forgetting just how massive and fast Felix was. Swallowing down a bit of adrenaline, he perked up as Felix picked up the messenger bag, hooking it onto his shoulder and beginning to walk down the hallway.
The very second they were out of earshot and the flap above him opened, Pepper scrambled to his feet, beaming up. “You did great!”
“Ah, I don’t know,” Felix said doubtfully, dropping a hand inside. Pepper suppressed a flinch, then carefully stepped onto Felix’s awaiting palm. “They didn’t seem to like me.”
“Then they’re just idiots,” Pepper snorted immediately. He sat down and crossed his legs, gingerly holding onto Felix’s thumb as he was lifted to eye level. “I could hear you, and let me tell you, you fucking rocked it.”
A pink tinge crossed Felix’s face. “I wish the room was soundproof,” he mumbled.
“You’re definitely getting the part,” Pepper promised. “The guy that went before you definitely will not.”
Felix let out a breathy, amused laugh. “Wha…? Ricky wasn’t that bad.”
“Yeah, but you were better.” Pepper didn’t know much about singing, but he could tell when someone sounded good. Catching sight of Felix’s uneasy expression, the borrower tried to shove away his competitiveness for his sake. “It’s okay, though. What matters is that you went in there and did your best.”
Blue eyes blinked down at him. “Thank you,” Felix said genuinely. “I really appreciate you coming with me. It’s helped a lot more than you think.”
Pepper beamed up at him. “Of course. I’m glad I did.” He stiffened as a door shut loudly nearby, and he let out a long exhale, pressure settling down onto his shoulders like a blanket. “But let’s go home. I’ve had enough of being outside for today.”
Felix laughed sympathetically before carefully moving the borrower to his shoulder. “Sure thing, Pepper.”
--------
grrrr idk why i'm so unhappy with this chapter. i changed it a couple times and hopefully it turned out ok??
eeee but its fun to write pepper and felix learning how to work together :') my favs

Seit dem Tag an dem ich dich gehen lassen hab vermisse ich dich nicht. Du warst mir immer so nah, doch irgendwann so fern.

since it is going to be a long 3 months without our boys could you please recommend some fics that you liked? cause i really like your writings and how realistic they are and i wanted to get some of you suggestions for the break!
love you loads
Thank you, lovely anon, for your very kind message! 🥺 I must admit I have fallen behind in reading fics. I am sure I am forgetting some excellent Lestappen fics/writers, but these are some of my all-time favourites!
Lestappen Fic Recs:
And in the end I will seek you out amongst the stars by mandzilkos (@geeeooorrrge) - rating: G, 22k words
Soulmate AU where you see in black and white until you meet your soulmate, and the world goes back to black and white after your soulmate dies. This is ALWAYS the first Lestappen fic that comes to mind whenever anyone asks for a recommendation, and it is probably my all-time favourite. The fic that inspired me to write Lestappen, if I'm honest.
getting half of you just ain't enough by shybear_styles - rating: E, 20k words
The friends with benefits story that spans the 2019 season. The only thing better than amazing smut is amazing smut with feels. For sure a top 5 fic in the Lestappen fandom for me. Also, this author is simply amazing in general and you should read all of her fics! I haven't given up hope that she will return one day and write more Lestappen. 🤧
you feel the mornin' feel by shybear_styles - rating: M, 3.3k words
Remember that time Sebastian Vettel asked Charles, "Is he [Max] pretty?" And we never got an answer because Charles descended into gay panic? Well, worry not! We get an answer in this fic.
Monaco Malaise by ProngsfootxJily (@cupidskissx) - rating: E, 8k words
Rivals with benefits, takes place after the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix. Yes, this one is delicious smut but also a character study. Both of them are written so well, and it leaves you begging for more. Don't forget to check out the equally amazing sequel! (Don't worry, I have been relentlessly harassing her to write the sequel's sequel.)
algorithm by Anney (@badboy-george) - rating: M, 17k words
In a world where F1 uses simulation-based compatibility tests, five times Max doesn't find the right partner and the one time he does. Black Mirror ("San Junipero" and "Hang the DJ") vibes in the best way. Another one of my absolute favourite fics. If you've read any Lestappen fics, you've probably read "Every Other Sunday." This one is simply a masterpiece by the immensely talented Anney; definitely check out her other fics!
panem et circenses by Anney - rating: E, 13.2k words
Wow - simply devastating, haunting, an ode to these two as drivers, set in a dystopian future AU. The world building is absolutely incredible, but at its heart is such a beautiful story of love and hope. This one doesn't get enough recognition. (TW: implied non-con, not between Lestappen.)
Unlearn by wantinghopingwriting (Tazza1993) (@lightsoutfullhearts) - NR, 45k words
This is another all-time favourite, a must-read. Fake/pretend relationship to lovers multi-chapter story that is ever so satisfying; both of them are so well characterized. Set in a parallel-ish 2022 season. I really cannot recommend this one enough.
the edge of what can be loved by Ledger_m (@the-last-jedis) - rating: T, 13k words
The third wheel fic from the perspective of Max and Charles' various "Steves." It's funny, heartwarming, and everyone on the grid is nosy as fuck.
Charles Leclerc vs Red Bull caps by Ledger_m - rating: T, 6.4k words
Charles is the hero we all need, as he goes on a mission to get rid of all of Max's stupid Red Bull caps. This is REQUIRED reading! Kami is a genius. Go read all of her fics.
If You Don't Play, You'll Never Win by antimonyandthyme (@antimonyandthyme) - rating: T, 4.1k
Post 2021 Monaco Grand Prix. Max wants to take their relationship further; Charles... doesn't. Oh my God, where do I begin to describe how much I love this fic. The language is beautiful, both of them are so well-written, and I feel punched in the gut over and over again in the best way. The ending (well, the whole thing) is so damn satisfying.
all's well that ends well (to end up with you) by stylestappen (@stylestappen) - rating: G, 3k words
Max has a meltdown in the cereal aisle (yes, the cereal aisle) at 3 am when he realizes he is in love with Charles despite the latter's questionable taste in cereal. Dani has an absolutely wicked sense of humour! (Although I don't understand what she has against cocoa puffs 😭.) She also wrote a banger of a Lestappen soon-to-be teammates fic, so make sure to check out her profile.
Max Verstappen: Spotify Extraordinaire by frnndtorres - rating: G, 26k words
Max makes Spotify playlists for the grid. Fluffy, funny, care-free, liberal use of nicknames, with a healthy dose of feels between Max and Charles. A really fun read.
i love the way your green eyes mix with that malibu indigo by altissimozucca (@altisssimozucca) - rating: G, 11k words
Max and Charles spend summer of 2020 together in Malibu and try not to fall in love. Spoiler alert: they fall in love. I feel the urge to explain something: When I first started reading Lestappen, there were less than 250 fics in their entire tag (yeah I know, we are currently close to 3000 fics, which is insane). From 2019-2021, we truly lived off crumbs. So trust me when I say that we owe so much to altissimozucca, who wrote something like 40% of the fics in the Lestappen tag and nearly single-handedly kept us fed in those days. It's so hard to pick one of her fics to recommend, so make sure you check out her profile for more!
#803442 by altissimozucca - rating: M, 1k words
Max and Charles celebrate the end of the 2019 season in a hotel room. So soft, so fluffy, so satisfying.
Bruises by eefiplier - rating: E, 5.1k words
I think of this one as THE Lestappen smut fic. Oh my God, it's 5k words of amazing established relationship smut with all the feels. A classic. I can read this one over and over again.
outside the box by playclock (@endowataru) - rating: M, 6.1k words
Max falls in love with Charles' driving... oh and Charles himself too. They are ultra competitive idiots who are madly in love. There aren't enough established relationship fics out there, but this one is simply amazing. And don't forget to check out this author's profile for additional Lestappen fics. I promise every single one is a banger!
i made it link by link by purpleglasseswrites (@f-ferrari-forever) - rating: M, 4.2k words
Charles and Max try to be kinky, but who are they kidding - they are far too vanilla for that stuff. 🤣 This one is so sweet, and don't forget to read the sequel!
One man's trash, another man's treasure by AzziNow (@track-terror-apologist) - rating: T, 4.2k words
Charles turns into a raccoon and terrorizes everyone except Max. (Well, he terrorizes Max too... slightly.)
Call it madness, call it love… by AzziNow - rating: M, 3.5k words
Ferrari auctions off Charles for charity. No angst, just fluff. Alpha!Max/Alpha!Charles. So I confess that I never read A/B/O fics. There's nothing wrong with it - just not my cup of tea. But I really enjoyed this one. Al has such a chaotic sense of humour.
it all reminds me of you by grandprix (@grandprix-ao3) - rating: E, 3k words
Secret relationship Lestappen with flashbacks. Oh the yearning, the desire, the smut - incredibly satisfying. I must put a plug-in for this author's other Lestappen fics as well. Never misses - make sure to check them out!
burning you into my mind by thightattoos - rating: E, 4.1k words
Porn with feels and possessiveness. You cannot ask for anything more. I must have read this one a dozen times.
an evil plan or two by witchee_writer - rating: T, 5.2k words
Max and Charles are roped into a plan to get Brocedes back together; they come to a few realizations along the way. The only thing better than a Lestappen fic? A Lestappen AND Brocedes fic!
Fine Line by empireoffclouds - rating: NR, 7k words
One of the more light-hearted enemies to friends to lovers fics. I absolutely adore their dynamic here - it's snarky, warm, but also so them. The incomplete sequel is also a super fun read.
Into Darkness Of Thought by flamingosarepink - rating: T, 1k words
After the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix, Charles thinks Max isn't coming back to their shared space.
steal softly under castle walls by untouchableocean - rating: G, 521 words
Max gets home late from Milton Keynes and Charles has already fallen asleep. Short, tooth-rooting fluff of the best kind.
Zoomies by greeny1710 (@maxlambiase) - rating: E, 2.2k words
This one is just hilarious. A (mostly) naked Max walks into Charles' team Zoom call during the COVID lockdown.
...and many, many more that I'm sure I have forgotten! 🙈 You can also check out my AO3 bookmarks (the first few pages are pretty much all Lestappen fics).
Please remember to leave kudos and comments for these amazing writers. The talent in this fandom is absolutely incredible. They all deserve so much recognition. Happy reading!
