#food intolerances
Text
For the low, low cost of absolutely free, you can just accept it and move on when someone says they don’t like a certain food/spice/food group instead of like.....being angry at them and insulting them for it? Like, it’s not your business and doesn’t effect you anyway, get over yourself.

There are lots of things I cannot eat. Including oats, peanuts, sweeteners, wheat AND gluten (not the same thing).
I used to love porridge with peanut butter and protein powder. Nope. Literally and figuratively.
I've been eating mixed nuts with a spray of olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt. Coupled with fresh apple and cinnamon. Very nice.
But fancied trying some "keto porridge".
So I've got a new amazon order on its way.
I already use collagen and inulin in other ways, but I'm throwing all these things together to see how it works as a hot breakfast. I'll add my half an apple and cinnamon into the mix. Maybe blueberries too. I also used to have those on my porridge.
It's all about trying new things. Working round what our biology, hormones and genetics throw at us from time to time!
It doesn't help my bank balance, lol. Just the cashew butter is a big jump up from much cheaper peanut butter, but I'll just have it as an occasional treat. A break from my usual breakfast.

jfc this fall is brutal. today's hell is under the cut.
I hate onions. The taste of *cooked* onion is great but I can't cut them without wearing goggles because my eyes burn for HOURS afterwards, raw onion literally burns my mouth, the smell makes me feel nauseous and the texture of them when I bite into food with them makes me gag and lose all appetite. I am very happy to put onion powder in anything with onions, or I pick around them in soups/green beans. My family knows this.
A couple days ago, I was visiting my sister and my mom made pizza. She'd already cooked the onions she was going to put on half of it so while my heart sank when I saw the onions I didn't say much of anything. The onions and other toppings went under the cheese (which is apparently not what anyone else does but that's how we've always cooked them) and when the rectangular pizza came out of the oven I carefully cut it into thirds.
"The onions are only on half," my older sister said.
"Yes, but I don't want to take a risk and bite into an onion. So I'll only eat this third."
The matter seemed settled, I ate my third, all was well until the next day when I came downstairs for lunch on a work break. I heated up a slice of pizza I was told wouldn't have onion but after I got it out of the microwave, I saw pieces between the cheese and the sauce and told them both (bc they were in the room and left it out for me) that I wasn't going to eat it. My mom apologized, and I... didn't assure her it was fine. I simply shrugged and said I wasn't comfortable eating the pizza even if she did pick them off for me and I went back upstairs to have the snacks I brought from home (for just this occasion) instead.
Today. I was accused of having 'too much of an attitude' in regards to refusing the pizza and I made my mother feel bad. My argument of "you know I can't eat onions" was downplayed into "we just thought you didn't like them, we forgot it makes you feel sick, and you were still too mean" so I fled to her in-laws place because we're a full hour from any town and. I'm still trying not to cry.
I have done, and will do, everything to make it easier for them to accommodate my sensory needs. I bring earplugs everywhere. I brought my own food. I make it a point to apologize any time they're cooking with peppers and onions and remind them I love them, the air is just making my eyes burn. I spend thousands of dollars on therapy and millions of hours talking with friends to learn how to communicate in a kind and effective way. And despite all of this, it's still my fault when I enforce a boundary that makes them feel guilty.
At a certain point, they have to stop cooking with onions.

IMPORTANT QUESTION REGARDING JOKER OUT:
Does anyone know or have the boys ever talked about their food allergies or intolerances?
Apart from Nace, I haven't seen anyone talking about it, so I'm wondering if they do.
Thank you 🫶

A thing that have decided is a bonus of having
A) awful dietary intolerances
And
B) no shame
Is situations like the other night.
We had an end of year dinner and one end of the table was advocating for everybody to get shared plates. Which would be fine but a corner of the table had intolerances plus we had people who didn't eat meat/only ate fish.
So advocating for my end of the table I pointed out that we had a lot of 'dietary requirements'.
The call back was "be quiet and eat your broccoli then" by somebody incorrectly assuming I was talking about being vegetarian when they were looking at BBQ platters.
Now, I'm not, but I was for eight years and am quite Sick Of That so I decided to make it awkward.
By cheerfully bellowing down the table
"Nah, garlic and onions make me poo myself!"
In the middle of the Nice Restaurant.
And then continuing
"Yeah, it's terrible. Complete gastric apocalypse."
...just to rub it in.
Anyway me and my dairy intolerant friend and our pescatarian companions all got our seperate orders and most of the rest of the table got their BBQ share plates except for the people who didn't want them, so win win really.

i'm made of spite so like, although i have found that a large majority of vegan foods that i used to eat are no longer available to me bc they contain gluten, i am willing to eat nothing if that means winning against the people who have repeatedly suggested that eating meat will magically cure all my disabilities but like also. gluten is so so present in vegan food alternatives and vegan options, especially in like in places where they'll have one non vegan gluten-free option and one vegan option containing gluten bc it's never occurred that someone wanting both niche little options will come along. i couldn't blame a single person who decided to eat meat again after losing the ability to eat gluten like it's rough out there

I risked soy for the first time in at least a year because for some reason I just desperately wanted sushi? And the nice thing about intolerances is that you can have a little bit every once in a while, so since I've been avoiding it I figured one packet of soy sauce would be worth the risk.
frankly, worth it even if I do get super sick. I have never enjoyed a tuna roll as much as I enjoyed this particular tuna roll. 🥺

My medical food restrictions are not a part of diet culture.
I can't digest gluten.
I can't digest eggs.
I can't digest dairy.
Soy triggers my migraines.
I have lynch syndrome, and am therefore not supposed to eat red meat, or highly processed foods.
For the same reason, I am supposed to be on a low carb, low sugar diet.
THIS IS NOT DIET CULTURE.
Please think twice before you tell someone what to eat.

Hmmm. Maybe the two bagel sandwiches, ice-cream, and tortilla chips wasn’t a good idea.

Jewish food kvetches ahead
CW: Food discussion
Just got back from the US (I'm typically UK based) and having to adapt to food and water changes has been rocky. Jewish genes don't help either, bro. We are very susceptible to food intolerance and allergies to certain food groups. Dairy? I can forget it in like a few years. Of course Dairy free and lactose pills are an option but it still sucks.
Don't get me started on Gluten allergies/celiac disease. There is of course a gluten free option for challah, our bread. But it's very egg heavy cause it's literal egg bread. This feels like G-d's many jokes. It's not funny, HaShem–/j
Like "Ah yes let's give the chosen people a gluten intolerance to LITERAL. HOLY. BREAD." Which again, work arounds and such exist, but STILL.

How to Spot and Address Food Intolerances
Food is an essential aspect of our daily life since it provides both nourishment and pleasure. Certain meals, however, might cause discomfort and unpleasant sensations in some people, indicating the presence of food intolerance. Food intolerance is a non-allergic reaction that affects the digestive system, as opposed to food allergies, which entail an immune system response. Food intolerances are becoming more common, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Detecting and treating food intolerances is critical for general well-being and quality of life.

Whinge...moan...grumble....bitch....
Day one without my peanuts.
Only joking with that first line. Kinda...
I had a cold hard boiled egg with a few brazil nuts with my strong coffee.
Now, I could have easily had the egg or the nuts on their own. That was enough. That will also keep the cost down a bit. A single egg just seemed a bit insignificant, lol. But yep, it was plenty.
Going to just go with nuts or egg tomorrow.
I have scrapped the sleep restriction plan. I am too wrapped up with the mucus thing right now.
So I'm going to bed at what used to be my normal time. That worked out fine the first two nights, but this morning I was awake and drinking decaff just after 5am. No biggie.
Then I had to get moving.
Bodyweight strength for my lower body.
Full reps for 30 seconds, pulses for 20, then ac10 second isometric hold.
Four circuits of three moves, two rounds each.
Then I put my raincoat on, and set off out for my little walk. Not seen a sunrise for a few days but I still get myself out there!
I'm plodding on, because that's better than throwing my arms up in defeat and sulking on the couch all day.
And yep, that is quite tempting, I gotta say!

If you have celiac and buy the brand Van’s for their waffles, please know that 9 days ago there was a recall because some of the packages of the gluten free waffles may contain “undeclared” wheat. And if you have celiac, you know “may” might as well mean “does”.
This recall only applies to boxes with the matching lot codes and numbers, and do not pertain to other products that Van’s has to offer. These boxes were distributed in AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, NC, & WA. Please check your boxes immediately to ensure your own safety and save yourself the painful reactions to gluten. It’s advised the purchased packages be either thrown out (or given to someone who can eat wheat so as not to waste it) or return the product to where you’ve purchased it from.

“The U.S. Food & Drug Administration website published the recall July 3. It applies to certain packs of Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles with lot code UW40193L, expiration date Jan. 19, 2024, and UPC 0 89947 30206 4. According to the Van's recall, some of the packs of waffles may contain undeclared wheat.”

So I would like to make a post about food allergies given the information I've been taught by my allergist regarding my food allergies.
The difference between food allergy, sensitivity, and intolerance.
Allergy. This is the classic anaphylaxis.
Sensitivity. This is caused by allergies, but the risk here isn't anaphylaxis. It's inflammation in gut that can cause fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, generalized ick feeling.
Intolerance. Your body is literally unable to process the food. It lacks the ability to, which means the food causes inflammation in the gut, causing similar symptoms as sensitivity.
Sensitivities will show up on an allergy test. Intolerance has to take a different test specific for that type of intolerance.
I mention this because I see a lot of fake claiming food allergies that's like "Yeah but I cross contaminated the food with eggs and that didn't kill her. She must be lying." Yeah food sensitivities can be pretty mild. Where if you give them an egg salad, they're gonna be having a bad day. But if you rub egg on their burger, they may not even notice.
Also like there's a lot of medical conditions that can affect a person's diet. They may have stomach issues that means they can't eat a lot of acidic foods, and if saying "Hey, I'm allergic to pineapple" gets you to not put pineapple juice in their drink because it'll cause a flare-up. I'm all for people doing whatever they need to make sure their health is taken seriously. Even if it's outright lying because food allergies is the only fucking thing people seem to take seriously in this world.
Anyways take people's "I can't eat this food" seriously. And don't fake claim them if they go "I can't eat this food but I'm not at risk if there's cross contamination"
-fae
