You hear him before you see him. That’s generally how it goes with JJ, but today, he’d opted to use the front door. You turn your head and glance at your closed bedroom door, smiling to yourself knowing that he’s on the other side of it.
“Come in.”
The knob turns and JJ’s messy blonde hair peaks in, followed by his deep blue eyes. He finds you instantly, and that goofy grin spreads across his lips.
“Hey,” he greets you, “Guess what I have?”
You purse your lips, “Herpes?”
He recoils at that, furrowing his brows at your suggestion as he slides into your room.
“Gross. No. Why would you even think that?”
“I saw you flirting with that touron,” you shrug, “She didn’t exactly look clean.”
JJ smirks, digging around in his pocket and pulling out a wad of cash, “Relax, Y/N/N. I wrapped up.”
Your face falls for a split second at the mere thought of anything happening between JJ and this random girl. You shake your head and drop the expression, thankful that JJ’s too busy counting cash to notice you.
“What’s that for?” you change the subject, gesturing toward the bills in his hand.
He grins, “This is my first contribution to our deal.”
You laugh, earning every ounce of his attention. His eyes dart up; big, blue, and wide, as he stares.
“J, come on. Be serious. There’s no getting out for us.”
He stares blankly for a moment before his eyebrows furrow and he shakes his head.
“Wow,” he mutters, “I almost thought you meant that for a second.”
“I do.”
“No, you don’t,” he replies, only half listening to you as he steps to your closet and starts looking around, “You got an old shoe box or something we can put our money in?”
“Could you not dig through my closet, please?” you groan, rising from your bed and stepping over to him.
He ignores you, as expected, and pulls a box down from the top shelf of your closet. Wide eyed, you yank it out of his grasp before he can even consider opening it.
“Whoa, okay, what’s in the box?” he questions playfully, smirking as he eyes you and then the cardboard tucked tightly into your chest.
“Nothing,” you say sternly, praying he drops it, “There’s a shoe box under my dresser. You can use that one.”
With one last glance down to the box in your grasp, JJ crosses the room and kneels down to snatch up the empty shoe box from underneath your dresser. While he’s occupied, you shove the box back into your closet and close the doors before he can bring it up again.
“Alright,” he declares as he stands back up, “We’re officially thirty bucks closer to getting out of here.”
You raise a brow, “Thirty bucks?”
JJ purses his lips the way he does when he’s being playful; when he’s thinking more than he’s willing to say.
“I can only budget twenty from my checks,” he says slowly, then smirks, “And, y’know, ten for the piercing thing.”
Your jaw falls open, “JJ.”
“What?” he chuckles, closing the box now containing his cash and tucking it back under your dresser.
You shake your head as he crosses your room, collapsing on your bed but being mindful enough to leave his boots hanging off the edge. He removes his hat, then combs a hand through his messy hair as he smirks up at you.
“By all means, make yourself comfortable,” you mutter, crossing your arms over your chest.
He laughs, “Come on. Lay down with me. Let’s watch a movie or something.”
You chuckle and roll your eyes, “Your ass can’t sit still for twenty minutes. No way I’m ever watching a movie with you.”
“Y/N/N—”
“Besides,” you stop him, “I have to get ready for work. I need to rake in the tips tonight if I’m gonna keep up with your thirty dollar contribution.”
“Hey,” he narrows his eyes at your sarcasm, “That’s all the cash I could spare, considering you have a birthday coming up.”
The tenseness in your shoulders drops as you picture JJ, sitting in front of his cashed paycheck, dividing up his money. The image of him tucking cash away for your birthday, then for this fund to run away together, and another little bit that goes to John B for letting him stay at the chateau, you know JJ isn’t pocketing much for himself.
His eyes never leave you as you start to pout and step closer to him, swallowing down the lump in your throat at the mere idea of him pinching pennies to buy food for himself.
“I don’t want anything for my birthday, J,” you murmur, arms still tight against your chest.
Slowly, JJ sits up on your bed, but his hat falls from his chest to the floor. He doesn’t even flinch; keeping his eyes locked on you.
“Yes, you do,” he says, smirk teasing his lips, “You always want presents. Last year, you sent out a whole list of things for all of us to buy you.”
“That was last year,” you defend weakly, taking another step.
“You expect me to believe you’ve changed that much in one year?” he questions.
You take in a deep breath, unsure of what to say. Unsure of how to convince him that he doesn’t have to get you anything — not if it means he struggles financially for the next month just to buy you something you don’t need to survive.
“Maybe I don’t want a material gift this year,” you finally say, stepping in front of him completely.
As if on instinct, he widens his legs, as if expecting you to slot yourself in between them. When you don’t, refusing to look down or acknowledge his movement, he reaches out and grabs onto your arms.
“Really?” he questions, scanning your body, “Why’re you so tense? Relax. C’mere.”
Your heartbeat picks up, and for the first time in forever, you realize you’re thankful that JJ can’t hear it.
He loosens your arms and tugs them apart, letting them fall to your sides. His hands, greedy and selfish, run down your skin and latch onto your wrists, where he tugs you even closer to him.
“Better?” he asks.
You nod, “Mhm.”
Your mind feels fuzzy as you lock in on his eyes; so blue that you swear it’s the only color you’ll ever see for the rest of your life. He grins and squeezes your wrists, but it still doesn’t draw you out of your haze.
“So, what do you want for your birthday, then, Y/N/N?”
You don’t trust your voice, and the betrayal of your own body seems to push you over the edge. You’re sure JJ can feel you leaning into him, wanting him only closer, and just as his hands loosen on your wrists, as if he plans to place them elsewhere, your phone rings on your dresser.
He watches as your eyes finally fall from his own and you glance around the room, desperate to find the source of sound. When you tug yourself out of his grip, he sighs and lets you go.
You shake your head as you walk away from him to collect your phone, desperate to get everything straight.
You stare at the text from your boss for a few seconds too long, taking time to comprehend the request for you to come in early. JJ clears his throat behind you, but you don’t turn around right away.
“Who is it?” he questions.
“My boss,” you reply, your voice unfamiliar to you, “I have to go in early.”
“Well, you don’t have to—”
“Like I said,” you stop him, “I need the money. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
He scoffs behind you, “You’re kicking me out?”
You don’t reply, still trying to collect your bearings in your head. You shut your eyes and swallow, waiting to hear your bedroom door shut behind him. Instead, you’re just met with more silence.
“Y/N.”
“What?”
“Look at me.”
You open your eyes and turn back around, finding JJ now standing. His hat now rests in his hands, and his expression reads concern.
“Why are you being weird?” he asks.
“I’m not being weird,” you immediately reply, to which he sarcastically nods.
“You’re right, perfectly normal,” he mutters, “Can I come by and see you at work later?”
You’re not sure why he’s asking, because both of you know he’ll be there regardless of the answer you give. Instead of pointing that out, you just nod.
“Yeah.”
He smiles and places his hat back on his head, “Have a good shift. See you tonight.”
He escapes out of your room with one last gentle smile, leaving you to collapse on your bed and groan the second you hear your front door close behind him.
You and Kiara have been running food around The Wreck all night. Not a second of free time to gossip, complain, check your phone, or even take a sip of water is given to you, leading to exasperated looks between the two of you in passing every time you can.
Just when you think you can’t get any more stressed, any busier, any more overwhelmed, you look up and lock eyes with Barry.
He grins when he sees that you’ve seen him, then raises up a hand in a greeting that clearly isn’t friendly. You swallow and purse your lips, then turn on your heel and walk in the opposite direction.
“What’s that about?” Kiara asks as she fills cups with soda.
You shrug, plucking yet another tray of prepared food into your grasp. She stares at you as you turn around, doing your best to relax your shoulders.
“He’s probably high,” you mutter to her, to yourself, or to your customers. You’re not sure.
As you deliver your plates of food, your eye catches on Kiara. She’s talking to her dad, pointing at Barry’s table, then looks over to you. Without a word, you know exactly what she’s doing. Even though Barry is seated in your section, her dad will be taking care of him tonight.
You hear Barry’s loud, sarcastic laugh sound through the restaurant when he realizes that you’ve chickened out of serving him, and as you pass by him once more to run more food to tables, you hear his voice.
“I never forget when a debt is owed. Remember that.”
You clench your jaw but keep moving, refusing to give into Barry’s bullshit.
Everything shifts in the air as JJ enters. It’s about an hour later — time doesn’t seem to exist to you when you work — and it’s slowed down just enough for you to breathe. With an easy, effortless smile and the company of Pope, JJ takes a seat at the counter and removes his hat. Your eyes meet his from across the restaurant, where you’re waiting on a husband and wife to give you their food orders.
Grinning, JJ holds his hand up in a wave. You give him a smile in response, then focus your attention back on your customers. Once you’ve secured their order, you pass it off to Kiara to take to the kitchen, then step over to the counter.
“Busy girl,” JJ observes with a smirk, “Thanks for taking the time to come over.”
You shrug, feigning nonchalance, “I heard Pope tips well.”
“Only if you bring me a chocolate milkshake and a basket of fries in the next five minutes,” Pope fires out, earning a laugh from you.
“You got it,” you nod, “Want anything, J?”
“Fries,” JJ replies, and just as you turn away, he speaks again, “And, for you to tell me what you want for your birthday.”
You smile, and just as you shift back to face him, ready to name off the most ridiculous thing you can think of, Barry speaks from his now standing position behind JJ.
“Birthday?” Barry questions, raising a brow at you, “Oh, shit. Will the princess be twenty?”
Your lips press into a firm line, and just from one glance at you, JJ can tell you want no part of this conversation. With no hesitation, JJ stands from his stool and sizes Barry up, taking one step too close.
“Can I help you?” JJ asks, his voice low.
Barry’s smirk widens, “Nah. My business isn’t with you.”
“Your business isn’t with her, either,” JJ challenges, tipping his chin up, “Get out of here.”
Barry just chuckles while you remain still, unsure of what to say to appease either party without letting the other down. When Barry’s eyes move over to you, JJ takes one more step forward.
“Fuckin’ relax, Blondie,” Barry says to JJ, then turns to you again, “Everyone knows their place here.”
“Damn right,” JJ nods his head, not budging an inch.
With one last glance at you, Barry nods his head and turns around, walking out of The Wreck with no glance back. JJ finally stands down, but when his eyes meet yours, you can tell he won’t be letting that go anytime soon.
“I’ll get your fries,” you say quickly, spinning around to walk away.
You’ve made it exactly half a step before JJ’s voice rings out right where he stands.
“Hold it.”
Your eyes close, and slowly, you turn around to him. When you open them, you wince, given his harsh expression. One you’re not used to in the slightest.
“What?” you ask innocently.
JJ raises a brow, but with an intake of both of your surroundings, he sighs in defeat and shakes his head.
“I’ll take a milkshake, too,” he mumbles.
You smile, “You got it.”
JJ and Pope eat and drink in peace while you and Kiara finish up your shifts. It’s later than usual when you finally get to clock out, and Kiara notices when you hang back in the office, fidgeting with your bag.
“You good?” she asks.
“Yeah,” you lie, hoping to avoid JJ and his million questions, “Don’t wait up. I’m walking home.”
She nods, “Okay. See you tomorrow, then.”
You give her a smile and let her leave you alone, where you catch up on a few text messages before attempting your escape. You’re sure Kiara told the boys you were walking home — not wanting to hang out after such a long and grueling shift.
With the main restaurant being empty, you’re sure you’ve made it. The walk home is only ten minutes, which gives you plenty of time to reflect on your night, your tips, and to ignore anything relating to Barry. You’re just thankful your dad isn’t home to bug you. He works overnight throughout the week, so you mostly see him on the weekends. Which is more than fine with both of you.
You don’t notice the red hat as you approach the house, or the blonde hair peeking out from underneath as you climb up onto the porch. When you finally do manage to look over, however, eyeing the blue eyed boy with a blunt in his hand, you groan.
“Not my normal greeting from girls, but whatever,” JJ teases, blowing out smoke.
“I’m tired, JJ,” you sigh.
“That’s fine,” he answers, “I just want to know why Barry’s bothering you.”
If the circumstances had been different, you think, maybe you’d confess right there. Maybe you’d tell JJ — given that he’s your best friend, your confidant, your favorite person. But, now, on your front porch, all you can see when you look at him is the way he sat on your bed earlier, pulling you in to feel your skin. All you hear is him asking what you want for your birthday. All you imagine is him living under his means just to fill a shoebox with cash for a trip the two of you probably won’t even end up going on.
“It was a stupid thing that happened before you got there,” you lie, “He tried to sit at the counter and I told him I did want him in my section. He’s a terrible tipper.”
JJ stares, and for a moment, you’re not sure he believes you. Then, with a nod, he drops it.
“Guy’s a fuckin’ tool.”
“Yeah,” you agree, “Anyway. I’m gonna head in.”
“Uh, yeah,” he nods, taking another hit and letting the smoke fall from his lips, “You, uh, mind if I crash?”
You raise a brow, “You and John B?”
JJ shakes his head, taking another long hit, as if to stall from whatever words he wants to say.
“Nah, he’s fine. Just thought, y’know, your dad’s not here, and it might be nice to have a man in the house. Just in case.”
You furrow your eyebrows at his comment, watching as he grins the second he sees your expression. You laugh and shake your head, then nod toward the door.
“C’mon in.”
He tosses the remainder of his blunt off the deck and follows you inside, removing his hat and wiping his hands on his shorts upon entry. You guide him through the messy kitchen and into your room, where you toss your bag on the floor and remove your shoes.
“Do you ever get scared of being here without your dad?” JJ asks as he collapses on your bed.
“No,” you reply bluntly, swatting his shins, “Take your boots off.”
“Yes ma’am,” he quips.
You walk across your room and pull out the shoe box JJ had so carefully tucked away, then remove a wad of cash from your back pocket that you’d placed there on your walk home. JJ takes off his shoes and moves them out of the way, then leans back on your pillows and tucks one arm underneath his head as he watches you.
“This is my first official contribution,” you announce, “Thirty-one dollars.”
JJ laughs loudly, “Just had to outdo me, huh?”
“Yes,” you say proudly, tossing the cash in with his.
He laughs again, and the sound brings a smile to your face. He watches you tuck the box away again, letting his smile take up his entire face.
“I’m getting some cash from that grocery job with Heyward, so I’ll put more in this weekend,” he says.
Not knowing what to say, how to encourage him to keep the money for himself, you just nod. Wordlessly, JJ unlocks his phone and starts scrolling while you get out a change of clothes. You excuse yourself and shower, and when you return, JJ’s phone is tucked neatly on your nightstand. He’s already halfway asleep, cuddled underneath your comforter with his eyes glued shut. Even so, he can tell when you enter the room.
“Come to bed,” he mumbles, raising his left arm.
The command, while simple, elicits a number of reactions in your mind and body. Suddenly, no part of you is tired. You replay the words several times before your body feels even remotely ready to move, and once you do, you stare at JJ’s face against your pillow for far too long before falling into the mattress.
Once he feels the dip, he tugs you back into him by your shirt, then presses your back to his front while adjusting the blankets around you.
Your eyes are wide but your brain is foggy and empty. You can feel JJ’s even exhales against the back of your neck, and no part of you cares.
“Night,” he almost whispers.
Your response is late, weak, and pathetic. Yet, it’s all you manage to get out.
“Goodnight.”
