Let's talk about what seems to be a taboo subject in Buddie fanfiction fandom: Buck’s stutter.

Disclaimer: I am writing this as someone who has a stutter as well

Multiple times I've seen people (mostly Twitter but who is surprised) be annoyed by Buck stuttering in fanfiction.

BUT he does in the show. If you pay attention, you'll notice he stutters quite a lot or repeats words. Maybe I notice it more than others because I always watch with English subtitles for deaf and hard hearing people where they subtitle everything, including sighs.

He often stutters in the beginning of a sentence when he's confused, anxious, or frustrated etc. At least once he called after Maddie stuttering at the Ma-.

Another example, 5x11, the famous 'you need to move on' scene:

Buck: H-Hey, you okay?

Eddie: Uh, yeah.

Buck: You look tired. Look, man, you-you don't need to pretend with me. It's okay to miss the job, you know? I-I remember what it was like when I was Fire Marshal Buck.

Eddie: This isn't the same thing. I like what I'm doing.

Buck: Yeah, but it-it's not what you're supposed to be doing. Y-You're a firefighter.

Another example of repetition of words:

Buck CANONILY (is that a word?) has a stutter.

So why do people get annoyed with this?

Some say it makes sentences harder to read. And ok, I get that if every sentence is written with ... and - that for some it gets complicated. Sometimes it can be unrealistic or overdone when written by people who do not have experience with a stutter in real life.

BUT I've also been seeing people (*ahum* twitter) say that it is 'babying' Buck. Infantilizing him.

Excuse me??

Honestly, as someone with a stutter it feels kinda offensive to say that writing a character with a stutter stuttering is babying or infantilizing him.

What do you have against stuttering? Is it ableism? Idk if stuttering counts in that area but idk what other word would fit.

Why does Buck stuttering in fanfics bother you so much but not canon in the show??

Can they stop acting like stuttering is a bad thing? It's not! There's NOTHING wrong with stuttering. It's normal. Lots of people stutter. Lots of ADULTS stutter and it doesn't make them any less.

I know Buck is just a fictional characters and won't be affected by the erasure of something so simple about him, but others with stutters will notice how you talk about it.

Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk and reading my frustrated rant. I know it's probably not a big deal but I'm just annoyed.

Buck & Eddie: 7x4 and 7x5 stills in episode order???

When the two separate synopses were released for 7x4, I wondered how 9-1-1 was going to fit everything into the episode that was released via the BTS stills but then I realized they wouldn't be able to especially since the length of each one (without advertisements) is only 42 to 45 minutes. Also, it appears there will be three main storylines, i.e. Athena and Harry, Hen's life changing news and Buck being bothered and bewildered.

After considering all of the information that's been released, a few days ago, I figured the stills of Buck and Eddie in Buck’s loft, the ones of them talking in the firehouse gym and the one of Eddie and Bobby's conversation wouldn't be included in 7x4. Additionally, I remembered the way 3x5 "Rage" ended with Buck and Eddie still on the outs and they didn't reconcile until the end of 3x6 "Monsters" when Buck made Eddie talk to him. With OS recently commenting on someone's IG post about how the two pictures of Buck and Eddie in the loft are from 7x5, it added confirmation to my analysis.

Since I'm a visual person, I like to see things in their totality instead of in increments the way the BTS pics have been released. Therefore, I've put all the stills together in a way that IMO, could be how they'll play out during each episode and there's one picture of Buck by himself that was released but I believe it deals with something else. I've included it at the end because I'm going to do a separate post on it.

Before I delve into this, here's my UNPOPULAR OPINION. I ship Buddie and only Buddie but I have to admit, I'm not really excited about this storyline because IMO, the audience has seen it before in 3x5 and 3x6 when Eddie was temporarily partnered with Lena (post linked here). Sure, he didn't leave the 118 but Eddie did have a new work partner who Buck was clearly not happy about. Also, even though Eddie didn't tell Buck about her, it was evident by Buck's reaction, he was in fact jealous since he thought he was being replaced and it seemed to be part of the reason why he filed the lawsuit (not the only reason but part of it). Reminder, he was ok with being the Fire Marshall until he heard Lena call Eddie's name in 3x4 then once he saw her, he asked Bobby, "You replaced me?"

At this point, in six years, I hoped Buck and Eddie would be at a place in their partnership where they can actually discuss things like adults instead of Buck lashing out. Please don't misunderstand me because I get it, Buck's worried about being abandoned again so it's understandable and this time he doesn't have anyone to cling to. But if they would let him go back to therapy like he went on his own in season 4, maybe he could spend time working on himself and this storyline could have been avoided. Will I change my mind before Thursday... honestly, I'm not sure.

Back to the regularly schedule program...

7x4 "Buck, Bothered and Bewildered"

Based on the look on Buck's face in the stills from them at Air Rescue, IMO, it's likely this scene could happen first because he seems to be bothered and bewildered by how close Eddie and Tommy are. Hopefully there's a scene before this one that explains how they became fast friends but it's also possible it'll be another scenario where Eddie magically contacts Tommy or vice versa and they start hanging out but the audience won't see it the same way we didn't see how Eddie magically got M's phone number? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Full disclosure: I don't trust Tommy Kinard and I've already posted about my reasoning (linked here) and I may elaborate on it but I really don't want to because I'd rather not focus anymore of my attention on the character.

Buck's face in the stills below while he's at the firehouse, appear to be hopeful like he got his "Eddie" back but when he sees him walk away, he gets that sad look in his eyes like he's being left behind again. That's why IMO, it happens before the basketball court scene but after them being at Air Rescue.

I tried to put the pictures below in order but since there's no context for when some of them happen, I added them where I thought they should go. Also, since Buck's bag is still on his shoulder in the third picture with him holding the basketball, I figured it happens before they start playing. Maybe Chimney hands it to him and he looks at Eddie and Tommy like him and Chimney are going to win the game.

IMO, Buck will have a conversation with Maddie before the end of the episode and that's when JLH's leaked script will come into play. Also, I believe Chimney will be the one to tell Buck he's acting irrationally then he'll ask him if something else might be going on. Reminder, he's going to be on the court with them and he'll witness the event.

It appears 7x4 will end with them still upset with one another just like 3x5 ended with them not talking.

7x5 - "You don't know me"

I've already completed a post on the title of the episode (linked here) but I do believe multiple people will say, "You don't know me" throughout the episode, including Eddie possibly saying it to Tommy.

When the episode begins, Buck and Eddie still won't be communicating just like they weren't in 3x6. Also, since there aren't any stills that show Tommy and Eddie discussing an available job position at Air Rescue, the only information that was made available came from one of the promos that included Bobby telling Eddie, "I can't tell you how to feel about this job, only you can do that" so it appears Eddie's going to be presented with the option to leave the 118 again either at the end of 7x4 or the beginning of 7x5 but I think his conversation with Bobby will happen at the beginning of 7x5.

Now, ever since TM (showrunner) released the two pictures below in advance of season 7, they've always perplexed me and it's mainly due to the looks on their faces, more so Buck's because he doesn't look angry or frustrated, he just looks tired like he's retreating or giving up. Initially, I didn't speculate on the pictures because I had no idea what was going on and I'm still not sure but based on the things that have been released regarding the episodes, IMO, Buck will apologize just like he did in 3x6 followed by him telling Eddie that he'll have his back if he wants to leave the 118 and go to Air Rescue. Reminder, the last time Eddie left in 5x10, he told Buck in front of Hen and Ravi but the audience only caught a glimpse of Buck's reaction.

I believe the stills below will happen towards the end of the episode and it will be similar to their conversation that happened in the firehouse in 3x6 with a little bit of the 3x9 kitchen scene thrown in. My reasoning is because they're at Buck's loft and Buck will be sitting alone probably pondering what he should do next since it'll be a strong possibility (for him at least) that Eddie will leave and he'll have to find a new partner.

I think Eddie will say something similar to the things he said in 3x6, "I forgive you. Just don't let it happen again" but this time it'll be different and more along the lines of how they talked in 3x9 (related post linked here).

This is where their dynamic seems to change because unlike 3x9, Eddie's not leaned against the counter, he's actually touching Buck's shoulder and his waist the same way he did in 3x1 during Buck's surprise welcome back party but they're the only two present 👀.

When I saw the picture above, I had an immediate reaction to it because it reminded me of something the audience has seen before. I'm not going to include my thoughts on it in this post but I will do a separate one about it.

The point of this post is to illustrate with the BTS stills how the scenes in the next two episodes with Buck and Eddie could play out. Will they finally take the leap at the end of 7x5 and become a CANON couple or will the show continue to delay the inevitable? Only the showrunner, writers, producers, actors and actresses know the answer to that question. Hopefully, they will start their romantic relationship because it's been six years and there's no reason to keep delaying it.

WIP Wednesday

Not watermark this time but another AU that I am having WAY too much fun writing... I give you a glimpse of Retail Manager!Eddie and Fire Marshal!Buck. I'm actually really excited for this story to be finished, I have so much planned for it.

Eddie was going to commit arson.

Which probably wasn't the smartest thought to be having while the much too attractive Fire Marshall listed out every single thing the previous store manager had screwed him over on but…. But Eddie was going to commit arson. At this point, it would probably help the company out to just burn down the whole store, take the insurance payout, and start over from the ground up. Preferably while still keeping him employed but, well, beggers couldn't be choosers and all that. “Your score is horrible,” the guy said with a tone of voice that meant that he was at least mentally, laughing in Eddie’s face. “Like, seriously, I don't think I should even let you stay open for business with a score this low.”

“So shut us down.” Eddie grumbled, kicking his sneaker against the scuffed up, unfinished concrete floor in front of the management desk.

He had been there a week.

A week. And Eddie had already had to argue with several customers over the return policy because the previous manager - may she rest in absolute hell (no, she wasn't dead, she had just gone to another store down the road and Eddie hated her on principle) - had thought the sign explaining it was tacky and removed it from the registers (which was illegal. They had to be posted). He had already had three workers put in their notice, the assistant manager kept looking sorry for him and annoyed by his questions, and now this. The Fire Marshal's inspection.

Eddie had worked his share of retail jobs and none of them enjoyed when the Fire Marshal visited. Granted, none of his stores had failed as hard as this one was apparently going to, but he figured there was a first time for everything.

The Fire Marshal snorted, “I'm not shutting you down.”

Great. Of course he wasn't. He was just wasting Eddie's time by pretending to care about his job. “Listen -.”

“I get it,” the Marshal said, pen tapping on the clipboard he brought with himself. It had several stickers on the back. Eddie had spied one that had said ‘hello, I'm anxious and I'm trying my best’. It looked like Chris’ folder for school. “It's, what, your first week?”

Eddie tried not to twitch and, instead, crossed his arms firmly around his chest. “Yes.”

“We'll call this a test run. You see what I do this time around, I give you a… Progress report or whatever. I'll come back in a few weeks when you've had some time to settle in and fix stuff up. Give you your real grade then.”

“That's…” Nice. Unfairly kind, actually. Something Eddie really hadn't expected. Every Fire Marshal Eddie had ever had the honor of being inspected by had shown up in a stuffy suit and tie, their badge clipped to their front pocket, and the air of someone who was almost good enough to be a firefighter permiating their being. This guy had shown up without any grays in his hair, a stupidly kind looking professional smile, a crisp white shirt with a small stain on his sleeve and a dark navy tie. He had introduced himself with a quick, firm shake of Eddie’s hand and said hello to the cashiers. He had worn his badge on his belt loop, not his pocket, and he had waited until Eddie was done with a customer before asking go to his office. Eddie didn't have any reason to be being so cold towards him. He almost felt guilty about it.

“Here,” The paper ripped as he tore off Eddie’s copy, signed the bottom, and handed it to him.

A 23%?!

Eddie balked at the score, “Oh, come on, man.”

“You're lucky it's not worse.”

“How is this lucky? It's an F minus.”

“Your smoke detectors don't even work in half the store.”

“They work.”

“See that blinking red light?” The Marshal pointed to the smoke detector above Eddie’s head. It blinked mockingly at him. “Half your alarms aren't doing that.”

Okay, so that… was a problem. “You marked down,” Eddie glanced at the paper, the neat, blocky handwriting in all capital letters. “That our store is too dirty. We clean it every night!”

“Cleary, not well enough.”

Absurdly, Eddie was insulted on behalf of his dusters. “You're just being petty.”

The Marshal bristled, “No, I'm being thorough.” He clicked his pen and shoved it in the front pocket of his khakis, and like it was mocking him, the overhead light in his office flickered, threatening to turn off completely. “I'll be back in a few weeks. Get this stuff fixed, and I'll give you an actual grade.”

“Get this stuff fixed, and I'll give you an actual grade,” Eddie mocked when he had left, burying his face in his hands with a groan. “Fuck you, Fire Marshal…” he glanced at the papers, to the name written out in print first before signed much too neatly. “Buckley.”

(Way more than) Seven Sentence Sunday

Mirrorball (aka pole dancer Buck) won the poll yesterday so here are some sentences from that (prev snippet here) Unsurprisingly, he is producing as many feels (if not more) as I expected. So, uh, sorry about that (but also not sorry at all).

The pole – warmed by the house lights, previous performers, and heat from the three hundred something bodies legally allowed by the fire marshal – presses through his black mesh shirt, around the vegan leather chest harness, finally grazing his spine. He applies more pressure, allowing it to bear more of his weight, raising his arms and caressing the brushed stainless steel like a lover. A gentle touch he’s never experienced but aches with longing for anyway.

Just after the first musical bridge, a series of twangy guitar riffs and soulful keyboard notes, a member of the bachelorette party – maid of honor according to her hot pink sash – approaches the stage. There’s a bit of a wobble to her gait, but she’s still holding her own as she confidently struts forward to offer some bills she not so subtly clenches in her teeth.

If Buck was interested in her, he would make a show of crawling on all fours and take the proffered cash between his lips. But he’s not, so he holds onto the pole as he swings around, dipping low to pluck it from her with his fingers, giving her a wink as he does.

It’s possible she’s familiar with his act because she pouts a bit at that, even as the rest of her group cheers and wolf whistles, tugging up her cutoff short shorts to further reveal the swell of her ass as she flounces back to her seat. As if she’s daring him to reconsider lest he miss out. And maybe he will, if the offer’s still there at the end of his shift and he’s feeling lonely enough.

Buck tucks the money into a hidden pocket between the waistband of his royal blue hotpants and his dance belt. The stuff is loaded with enough germs, he’s not particularly interested in having it touch his sweat beaded skin before redistributing it out in the world.

When he resumes his routine, letting his gaze drift to the back of the room, he works to quickly recover as his breath catches in his throat. Dark eyes suddenly look impossibly darker – hungry and possessive – as lips wrap around the mouth of a beer. It’s tilted back in such a way that they never break eye contact. Maybe it should scare Buck, make him consider asking Bosko or Williams from security to see him to his jeep. But, strangely, it doesn’t.

The opportunity to let that process or sink in passes when his music ends and he begins collecting stray cash that’s been tossed on stage. In the time it takes him to stand back up, and throw a flirty kiss to the audience, he realizes the back table is empty save for a bottle and a chair sitting askew as if the occupant left in a hurry.

Okay, so we know Eddie gets jealous and possessive of Buck when Buck meets/flirts with someone, but my question is: what would it take for Buck to get all jealous and blatantly possessive over Eddie? I know he's been put off and kind taken aback when Eddie started dating Ana but that's all. (At least I think. My memory ain't the best)

Honestly we’ve seen Buck be jealous throughout the show, but it’s not as blatantly obvious as Eddie is. Where Eddie is more obvious and possessive, Buck is slightly more subtle in a very unlike Buck way. Here are some moments where we’ve had peak jealous!Buck.

Back in season 2 when Shannon comes back, we see the first few moments of Buck being jealous. They’re all in such subtle ways that someone would probably not consider he was jealous upon first glance. When Eddie is telling him about sleeping with Shannon again, Buck’s entire body language is closed off and he seems like he really doesn’t want to be in that conversation at all. The way he shakes his shoulders and doesn’t want to look Eddie in the eyes when he says, “You said it best brother” is typical deflating and minor jealousy on his part. We know he is because even when he’s complaining to Chimney about Eddie sleeping with his wife again, it seems like he’s upset that Eddie kept that away from him of all people.

Then, when Eddie is FaceTiming Shannon, we come to find out that Buck was just casually lurking around in the background when he jumps off the truck. Again, his facial expressions show he’s jealous over Eddie rekindling things with his wife. His little attitude response when Eddie asks him if they would have to get married again, further proves he’s not being a supportive friend, even though he’s trying to be. He’s very sarcastic and he immediately walks away from that whole situation, almost as if the idea of Eddie remarrying his wife is something that doesn’t sit well with Buck.

In season 3, the first glimpse we get of jealous!Buck is when he visits the firehouse when he’s a fire Marshall and sees Bosko. In that moment when she calls out Diaz, you can see Buck squint his eyes and close off immediately. He gets all prickly when he asks Bobby, “Uh who is that?” The man literally couldn’t help himself. He walked up to her name and ripped it off his nameplate. Show me a more jealous behavior than that please?!

Later on, the mere mention of Ana made Buck all prickly. But once again, whereas Eddie is overtly obvious in his jealous when it pertains Buck, Buck is the opposite. He says things that Eddie told him in confidence. Sure that’s not a good trait but we should look at how he says those things.

When he blurts out that Eddie may have met someone but he bit her head off, he purposefully mentions it in front of Bobby. Sometimes, when someone is jealous, they can’t help what comes out of their mouths. Clearly Buck is bothered by it because he says something Eddie told him in confidence, and then puts on that innocent expression, almost as if to say, oops I didn’t mean to 🥹. That’s a typical jealous behavior and once more it speaks volumes as to how much Buck dislikes the topic of Eddie with any other woman. He could have been supportive in that moment but he didn’t even try to be.

We all know how this episode ended and who was shown to be the better partner for Eddie in the end and it wasn’t Ana.

Before I continue about the topic of Ana and Buck’s subtle (or not so subtle) jealousy, let’s all remember the crossover episode. Sure we got a glimpse of Eddie being jealous and going so far as to playfully punch Buck’s arm because he thought he was looking at Marjan. But what a lot of people don’t talk about is Buck’s reaction to finding out Eddie is actually pairing up with Marjan.

He was all excited to be able to work with his partner in crime to tackle this wildfire. When Eddie broke the news that he won’t be working with Buck, we saw hurt flash momentarily in his eyes. But that was nothing compared to him realizing who Eddie would be working with. Once again, he squints his eyes and seems upset that not only will they not be working together, but Eddie would be working with the fabulous Firefox.

You can see how Buck does a full body wince. He’s taken aback. It’s not obvious, but it’s there. He looks on in disbelief because he can’t fathom his partner willingly working with anyone that’s not him. Not even that, but with the supremely competent, female firefighter. He seems to be at a loss for words and I find their entire interaction in this moment hilarious because Eddie was too smug for his own good. He knew exactly what he was doing and what games he was playing with Buck. Nobody can convince me that Eddie didn’t purposefully choose to work with Marjan to somehow make Buck jealous, almost to get back at him for staring at her earlier in the day. Case in point, both men were jealous over a woman who couldn’t be any less interested in either man lol.

Upon the reappearance of Ana in Eddie’s life, we got to see Buck losing his grip on his subtle jealousy. The second Eddie mentions running into Ana again, Buck doesn’t even wait to bring her up in front of the team when he casually asks Eddie what he thinks Ana’s love language is. When Eddie looks at him in a I can’t believe you said that right now way, Buck just puts on his little innocent eyes and shrugs, almost as if he didn’t realize it was meant to be a secret. He did the same when he blurted out about Ana to Bobby back in season 3. You can clearly tell he’s not sorry for letting everyone know Eddie ran into Ana again. It’s definitely a sign of jealousy when one person can’t help but talk about the person who may possibly be their competition in such a way that can bring forth negative reactions. He was hoping that would be the case here when he brought up her name because by the teams reactions, it was obvious that they weren’t all that happy about her reappearance. But of course to Buck, it didn’t register that he should be a supportive friend because he had his green googles on and frankly didn’t care to support his partner on his possible new romance.

We also get to see a glimpse of Buck’s facial expression in the end of that episode when Eddie tells the team he has other plans. The camera focuses on Bobby sure, but you can definitely see Buck squinting his eyes in disbelief. They don’t keep things away from each other and that is the first time Buck is clearly hearing about Eddie’s other plans. So I’m sure he had put two and two together and realized in that moment that Eddie is going to be meeting up with Ana. He kinda looks upset and looks away from Eddie, almost as if he really can’t believe his partner is choosing someone else to spend his time with. His expression is peak jealousy here but again, in the subtle, blink or you won’t notice kinda way.

It’s funny that we didn’t see these two talking about Eddie’s relationship at all. The next time we see Buck somewhat acting in a subtle jealous manner is when he was babysitting for Eddie. You can tell he really didn’t care for Eddie’s date but something was eating inside him where he just had to ask about the date. The way he went about it was most definitely not a best friend being genuinely supportive and interested but of someone who seemed to be wanting to torture themselves with knowledge they didn’t want or need. He was stuttering, almost as if it was a hassle to even get those words out.

Also, a key thing to remember about Buck during the whole Eddie/Ana phase is that he started dating the same exact time Eddie did. If that isn’t a key jealous behavior, a sort of way to preserve his own heartbreak and get out there to forget about the possible love of his life dating someone who is not him, then idk what that is.

The final time I believe we see Buck acting in a jealous manner is in the beginning of season 5, where the team is teasing Eddie about meeting Ana’s family and how serious things are getting. His facial expressions are super forced and he’s not being genuine with his support. The way he can’t even look Eddie in the eyes when he says, “Sounds pretty serious” speaks for itself. Not only that but you can kinda hear the pain in his voice. He’s now realizing that things really are becoming serious with them and that he may possibly be losing Eddie.

His lingering looks to Eddie just confirms how he rather not be having that conversation but he can’t help steal looks at the man who possibly means more than anything to him.

There’s just so much there that is left unspoken between these two. Buck has shown to be jealous throughout the entirety of him knowing Eddie. It’s just not as loud and as obvious as Eddie has been. They’re the opposite of their typical personalities. Where Eddie is normally reserved and calm, when he becomes jealous over Buck, he becomes possessive and loud. Where Buck is outgoing and loud, he becomes sassy and closed off when he’s jealous. I mean I would love to see Buck become a bit possessive in a healthy way soon but I guess we’re gonna have to wait and see. Just know that we have had moments where we’ve seen Buck act jealous over other people in Eddie’s life, it’s just not as obvious!
