Low Energy Witchcraft - Chronic Fatigue Edition
Tumblr media
Making a post such as this is something I find absolutely vital. Many of us deal with fatigue. Many of us deal with chronic fatigue and don't know it. This comes in tiredness, drowsiness, exhaustion, lethargy, brain fog, memory issues, slurring of words and muscle weakness.
I deal with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis aka Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). My Fibromyalgia accompanies that which is a chronic pain condition.
Sometimes you feel stuck in your own body. Bedridden for hours, days, weeks and sometimes life in extreme cases of ME/CFS. Weather can affect this, environment and pushing yourself past your limits. Rest is important.
Now how does this tie into witchcraft? Simple. We use our energy for spellwork, raising energy, energy work, devotion, basically everything. So much of our practice requires personal energy being manipulated and used, leaving us exhausted after in a lot of cases.
I'm going to share some helpful tips with you today.
Now remember, witchcraft is an aid. Nota cure or a replacement for medical aid. Please still take any and all medication and go to the doctors when needed.
Now let's get into it
Sustaining and drawing energy:
Borrowing energy from elements, crystals, tendrils (I'll go into this), space. It's limitless.
Tendrils. Tendrils are a form of vampiric magic I learned. Where you can borrow energy from another person. I will not go into the ethics of consent. I believe you need to do what's right for you at the moment. However, consent is something vital and needs to be practiced. How do you do it? Visualize or focus on feeling these energy tendrils coming out of your fingers. They can suck up the energy from the space or from another person with contact and focus. If not immediately needed, you can store this excess energy in a crystal or an amulet for later use. Always try to ground after so you don't feel overcharged. Being overcharged can cause shakiness, anxiety and sometimes manic-like states.
Sigils
Sigils are a great form of aid. You can make them for lifting brain fog, fatigue, memory, etc. I will link some when I make a few.
Spells
You can do mini spell workings on higher energy days to aid in many ways. I will link some when I make a few.
Deities Worship
If you work with certain deities they may aid you in health. Honouring and working with Apollon (Greek), Apollo (Roman), Sekhmet (Egyptian), Eir (Norse), Airmed (Irish) and many more are associated with healing. A simple prayer can do.
What can I practice when I have little/no energy?
You can practice mindfulness or elemental box breathing. How I do that is breathe in Earth, Fire, Water, Air. Hold Earth, Fire, Water, Air. Breathe out Earth, Fire, Water, Air. and Hold Earth, Fire, Water, Air. Repeat as needed. You will feel more connected to the elements that way.
Take any medication you have with intention. Drawing the sun symbol on your bottles, the planet sun is great for healing.
Prayer to any deities, guardians or ancestors you are currently working with.
Grounding your energy may help you feel better with brain fog. It tends to help me on heavy days.
Doing something as simple as opening a window on a windy day to connect to the air element. Helps cycle air in a stuffy environment as well.
Opening your curtains and basking in the sun's rays can feel very soothing. Alternatively, if you have a sun lamp for SAD, you can bask in its glow and envision the sun's rays on your skin to connect with solar energy.
I will add to this post as time goes on.
Do you want to see more posts I have? Check out the Masterpost.

I love planning all the little witch activities I’m going to do only to not do them because my body is always tired, and I’m disabled, and disability doesn’t care about what I want to do. :’’’)

realizing that part of why I find it so hard to do any witchcraft lately is because I literally don't have energy to do anything, let alone energy manipulation and magic that takes a lot out of me even on a good day. huh, I might need to start with some energy replenishing to help raise my tolerance,,,

“There was a time, Becket knew, when holy people were not safe. When they were not tame. When they were not the gentle shepherds, but the keepers of mysteries and the guardians of fire. As a priest, he turned wine into blood and bread into flesh—why had that ever become a tame thing, a safe thing? God was not safe. The numinous was not safe. So why then had he hemmed in his faith with safety? His hunger with rules? His zeal with bloodless, methodical praxis? He loved rituals, rites, and liturgies, that was unchanged. He loved the motions of them, the ancient words, the less-than-ancient words made to sound older than they were. But he’d been reduced by them, he saw now. Or perhaps not him personally, but his understanding, his relationship with God and belief. He’d hoped to wrestle it into submission, that relationship, and make it something that matched the way other people believed. He’d hoped to hide his zeal, stuff it into the corners of himself, bind it and lash it to his heart so it could never make it to his mouth to his hands and deeds. So that it could never make itself known. All he’d wanted, all he’d ever wanted, was to believe like other people did. Communally and pleasantly, and with glad hearts that could easily bear the distance between themselves and God. Not wild and alone. Chasing after God like an abandoned bridegroom. … Yes, the zeal was dangerous. Yes, it could consume him if he wasn’t strong enough. But he was tired of fighting it. Tired of pushing away love and sex and feral fun, tired of keeping his hunger for God locked in a box because he felt like he had to.”

Hello, friends! Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life, and I am thrilled to share it with all of you. My name is Nixie, and I am embarking on a remarkable journey towards wellness while living with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Over the past eight years, I have faced numerous challenges, but I am trying to find a multitude of methods to cope.
In this blog post, I want to introduce you to the tools that have become my companions on this journey—art, allotment gardening, gaming, and reading. These activities have not only helped me navigate the physical and emotional hurdles that come with my disabilities, but they have also become powerful sources of healing, inspiration, and personal growth.
Living with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome has presented me with a unique set of challenges. The constant pain, fatigue, and unpredictable nature of these conditions have often left me feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. However, I have refused to let these challenges define me. Instead, I have sought out ways to cultivate a sense of well-being, joy, and purpose in my life.
Art has become an essential part of my healing process. Through painting, drawing, and other creative expressions, I have discovered a means of self-expression that transcends words. Art has allowed me to convey my emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a way that is both cathartic and empowering. It has become a sanctuary where I can immerse myself in the present moment, finding solace and a renewed sense of self amidst the canvas and colors. The irony is I can't actually draw or paint.
In addition to art, I have found solace in allotment gardening. Tending to plants, nurturing life, and witnessing the miracles of nature have provided me with a profound sense of connection and purpose. Despite the challenges my conditions present, I am creating a small haven where I can find peace and tranquility. Gardening has not only become a source of physical activity but also a form of therapy, allowing me to reconnect with the earth and experience the healing power of nature. Right now, my allotment isn't the most practical and it's a huge mess - I need to sort out raised beds so I don't need to bend over.
Gaming has also played a significant role in my wellness journey. While some may view it as solely an entertainment medium, I have discovered that gaming offers a unique blend of mental stimulation, social interaction, and emotional escape. Engaging in virtual adventures and exploring immersive worlds has not only provided me with a much-needed distraction from pain and fatigue but has also fostered a sense of community and camaraderie with fellow gamers. It might sound silly, but on the bad pain days, I like to do things I can't in my day to day life in a video game.
Another thing that helps is reading, it has become a cherished refuge in my life. Immersing myself in the pages of a book allows me to embark on journeys of the mind, transporting me to different times, places, and perspectives. Whether it's fiction or non-fiction, reading has been an invaluable source of knowledge, inspiration, and comfort. It has opened doors to new ideas, expanded my understanding of the world, and provided me with a respite from the challenges of my conditions.
In addition to the art, gardening, gaming, and reading that have become pillars of my wellness journey, I also draw strength and guidance from my practice as a Wiccan and my exploration of witchcraft. Wicca has provided me with a spiritual framework that emphasizes harmony with nature, the celebration of life's cycles, and the power of intention. Through rituals, spells, and the connection with the natural elements, I have found a profound sense of empowerment and healing. Witchcraft, for me, is not about casting spells for personal gain but rather a means of tapping into the inherent energy of the universe to manifest positive change in my life and the lives of others. It has become a source of inner strength, mindfulness, and a reminder of my own resilience as I navigate the challenges of living with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. My Wiccan beliefs and the practice of witchcraft have deepened my connection to the world around me, providing a spiritual foundation that complements and enriches my other wellness methods.
As I embark on this blog, I hope to share my experiences, insights, and discoveries with all of you. My aim is to create a space where we can engage in open and honest conversations about wellness, disability, and the various methods we can embrace to nurture our minds, bodies, and spirits. Together, we can explore the transformative power of art, gardening, gaming, and reading and discover new ways to thrive in the face of adversity.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I look forward to connecting with each and every one of you as we navigate the intricacies of life with chronic illness and explore the boundless possibilities of wellness.
With love and resilience,
N.

If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your comic making process? I find it hard to make comics that look eye-pleasing to read and yours are like candy.
Tumblr media
Ah, comics! Dig under cut to see some old wips as I attempt to explain my nightmare thought process to you.
For making a comic AESTHETIC and APPROACHABLE:
I've noticed that it's easier for people to be pulled into a comic if I set the environment first and foremost, so people have some vague context for the scene. Of COURSE that's not always necessary ( there are a lot of comics that start out without environmental story telling and it works perfectly) but I've always liked having a lil illustration before digging my rat claws into the meat of the story.
For example! “Emmet and Elesa have a clandestine meeting in the library at 4 am.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sketch was sort of the jumping point to where I wanted to go with the comic. I wanted to a. explain wtf is happening and b. draw a nice conclusion about what the f is happening.
You don't need to make the environment available in every panel too! I'd suggest making your first panel tell all the environment detail you need and then like... slowly removing irrelevant detail from there. And then hit folks with the background again at the end. (So basically, you don't see the library in this comic until the beginning and a bit towards the end. I have tricked you! aha!) So that's one tip i have. For Readability: Anyways, to make a comic easy to read, spacing is super important. Dialogue tends to cramp a shot by a WHOLE lot. For example! Remember the "Lamp is told she's beloved (and has a tsundere moment over it"? That used to be TWO panels. Man. Nightmare fuel. Lemme find it. (This is the rough. I Lined It, realized the pacing is off, and then withered. Please don't look at it too hard.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So here's the thing. This READS. But the sheer amount of dialogue in the beginning is fatiguing for me and the "you are beloved, Lampent" NEEDS that oomph of both characters realizing that over the span of years, their relationship stopped being antagonistic and started being family instead. Some folks are fine with blocks of dialogue, but I have the attention span of a patrat on candy. I will not make it. SO! To match the almost moody atmosphere, I stretched the comic out. I stretched that bad boy out a LOT. And I got this out of it.
Tumblr media
Something to keep in mind in comics is there's always going to be one or two iconic lines. Lines that make people FEEL things. Those lines deserve their own panel, their own shot, their whatever. A good story has lulls in its conversation. If you can replicate it, you're winning. Character Blocking:
So basically no, it's not all witchcraft. It's only a bit of witchcraft. Another thing that helps is differentiating characters if they're on the same panel is by solid blocks of color. I have, for the longest time when working on storyboards, blocked characters different tones in order to help differentiate them. Don't be shy! Do that if it helps your comics read! Ingo will always be darker shaded then emmet. The angry nightlight will always have some hint of purple on her (unless I forget). The first goal in a story is to convey information, hehe. Here's an example of color blocking! (This is from a VERY old botw comic I did for linktober in 2021.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's, ah, rather rustic compared to what I do. usually. I know! BUT the primary goal here is to convey where the characters are in relation to each other. And the fact they're color coded makes life easier for both reader and artist. Alright! That's all the tips I can think of off the top of my head. Time to get off that soap box, haha. Overall: Basically, my work process is-- draw a story telling image/ write a funny piece of dialogue. Build the comic around that. Pace it so the important lines stand out. Color code the characters for max visibility. And then four to twelve hours of lineart, but that's neither here or there.
Thanks for coming to my unregulated rambling!

Composure, Tiers of Fear, and Monsters in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy
Tumblr media
Time to make another post about a cool mechanic in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy, this time about Composure, a mechanic that has actually been mentioned a bunch of our other posts because it interacts with a lot of other mechanics, but hasn’t gotten its own post. Hopefully this will make all those other posts make a lot more sense.
So, every PC in Eureka has a Composure of 7. Think of Composure as kind of an emotional HP, though it is not ‘sanity’. Composure loss represents stress, fear, fatigue, and anything else that can make people not quite work at their peak performance.
Tumblr media
Here’s how that works:
Normally, a character’s base stats for any skill max out at +3. +3 in Eureka is actually a very good modifier and will make the roll very very likely to succeed, and it represents expertise in the subject of the skill in question.
Composure, however, caps those skills. If a PC has 7/7 Composure, they’re fine, and their skills are unaffected. But a base skill modifier(the modifier that comes from putting skill points into a skill) can never be higher than the level of a PC’s current Composure. So if a PC has only 2/7 Composure, then that +3 becomes a +2. Skills that were already +2 are unaffected, but the PC now can’t make use of the full extent of their skill. Their hands are shaking, sweat is dripping in their eyes, they’re tired, and they’re more likely to mess up because of all this. At 1/7 Composure, their skills max out at +1, and at 0/7 Composure, their skills max out at +0. Thankfully, Composure cannot go into the negatives, but having +0s at best for all rolls is pretty bad.
Tumblr media
There are ways to get around the Composure cap, but I’m not going to get into that for the sake of simplicity. You can find the full rules explanation for free in the shareware version of the rulebook on our website.
One way that PCs lose Composure is by making Composure Rolls whenever they encounter something particularly threatening. Failing these rolls takes away Composure. The modifier for these rolls is dictated by their Tiers of Fear.
-3 Horrific: -2 Terrifying: -1 Frightening: 0 Unnerving: +1 Creepy: +2 Obnoxious: +3 Ridiculous:
Tiers of Fear is a little chart on the character sheet that tells you how scared they are of certain things. There are mandatory Fears that must go on this chart, such as gunfighting, but players can also add their own.
What is “horrifying” and what is “ridiculous” varies from person to person. For example, an adventurous whip-swinging college professor who brawls with Nazis on a seemingly regular basis might consider a fistfight Obnoxious and a shootout Unnerving at worst, but any kind of snake is firmly in the realm of Terrifying or worse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whip-slinging Archaeologist Example Tiers of Fear -3 Horrific: Snakes -2 Terrifying: -1 Frightening: Monster +0 Unnerving: Witchcraft/Magic, Gunfight, Blood/Gore, Death, Corpse +1 Creepy: Arachnids +2 Obnoxious: Extreme Heights +3 Ridiculous: Fistfight, Melee Weapon Fight
So when gun combat starts, the PCs must first make a Composure Roll with a modifier based on how much they fear getting shot at. A worse modifier, obviously, makes it more likely they will lose Composure points.
There are also ways to lose a flat amount of Composure points, such as by skipping a meal or staying up all night, and ways to restore Composure points, such as eating 3 meals a day and getting a full night of sleep(resulting in a restoration of 2 Composure points a day.) Composure points can also be restored by the PCs comforting each other. See the rulebook for the full rules.
Here’s where it gets really interesting, though.
PCs that are literally Monsters.
Tumblr media
Monsters are not limited to +3 in Skills, they’re supernaturally powerful, certain skills can go up to +6 or sometimes even higher. (They can still only put 3 skill points into a skill though. See the full rulebook for rules on how to make a monster PC.) link
Because their skills can go so high, they obviously start feeling the effects of the Composure cap a lot sooner, but for a lot of types of monsters, the way they gain and lose Composure is very different. Vampires, obviously, do not fear guns very much, nor do they have to worry about eating normal food or getting a good night’s sleep. This means that while their opportunities to lose Composure are fewer, they also have fewer ways to gain it… that’s where the part about eating people comes in.
Tumblr media
Monsters eat people to restore composure. Not every monster literally “eats” people, but you get the idea. They hunt people and do their thing, or else, organically by the way Composure works, their supernatural powers will start to wane. This gives monster PCs a choice: Do they eat innocent bystanders to keep their strength at its peak, or do they let themselves wither and soldier on weak and helpless in the hopes of sparing more lives?
Note: No, you cannot just eat “bad people” who “deserve” to be eaten. If you have enough time, foresight, and detective skills to effectively and consistently determine if every meal is a “bad person” that “deserves” to die, why haven’t you already solved the whole mystery by yourself then, hotshot? Engaging in one’s True Nature may be a necessity for continued existence, but do not pretend this is an act of heroism.
You can pick up the free shareware version of this game from the download link on our website, or the full version for $5 from our Patreon.

a case against fucking around and finding out: sometimes the finding out is not worth it.
Not to hit the coffee and immediately say something melodramatic, but here we go:
In the context of learning witchcraft or similar occultish pursuits, the quip fuck around and find out seems to put a lot of emphasis on the fuck around
and I think a lot less focus on the finding out.
I think that the finding out is assumed to be something that can be swept up and tidied under the rug, like:
Whoops, time to learn counterspells!
Well thank goodness I saved that bookmark for protection amulets.
What a relief! I saw a fairy doctor talking about how to correct offenses to the fae, that's really going to come in handy.
But I don't know if people consider that the finding out is sometimes, like:
I've had intermittent recurring pain in my heart for over a decade where a demon implanted energy tentacles into me, and energy healers have warned me to leave it alone. This is something I live with now.
I did a spell in the forest - I didn't know I needed to ask for permission - and now the trees are haunting me; I can't close my eyes without seeing a corpse-like dryad attacking me. I consulted with a spirit doctor and now I have to make offerings in the forest eight times a year just to appease those spirits, and my green magic has stopped working. It's time to rebuild my path.
I accepted the first spirit that appeared to me as my spirit guide. Six years of chronic fatigue later, after losing most of my friends and being able to move nowhere with my life, someone in a Discord told me that spirit is an energy vampire.
I learned to speak with ghosts and the first thing that happened was one of them implanting an energetic cord in me. It told me it was a symbol of honor, but since then I haven't been able to shut the ghosts out. It's affecting my relationships and my ability to work, and I need help.
I feel like I swing on the pendulum between "yeehaww, get in the back of the pickup truck y'all, let's go wrassle that magic!" and "last week Earl got his ankle run over by the truck and he needs seven surgeries to keep his foot."
I don't think either side is more correct than the other. Magic is a big landscape, and it's filled with mountains and valleys.
Just, like. Be careful out there, y'all. Sometimes the finding out really isn't worth it.
