Enneagram Instinctual Variants Write-Up (03/12/2022)

The following is merely a port of an entry I wrote in my diary in an attempt to understand my instinctual variant stack, which then evolved into a brief extrapolation of what I believe the instincts truly are. Nothing more. If I conceptually understand the instincts, then even replication of each one should be relatively easy. Further, though I wish to know my instincts, it's a relatively useless concept that is more in the realm of spirituality than psychology. That is—it seeks to explain that which isolates humanity from any other animal, as well as that which keeps it in the kingdom of animalia. The question of old, "do humans have souls?" It seeks to derive from your interpersonal influence, as well as our drives fundamentally. If I avoid the use of instinct, readily this becomes somewhat akin to a, "soul journey," or that which spiritualists may describe as your "karmic path". The dominant instinct being that which is safe, what you know and what you are drawn towards the most. With the auxiliary, a ~~function~~ *instinct* that under normal circumstance of, "synflow" being that which the dominant instinct uses to fulfill its desire. Interestingly, while in synflow Sp -> So -> Sx, the way that the instincts are used is actually in reverse. In Sp/So, the social instinct reinforces the Sp, not the other way around. So since the auxiliary is seen as more of a tool than a basic necessity, it gets relegated to the healthiest expression. However in contraflow, the order of use is actually the opposite, the Sp would flow into the So, this would mean reinforcing the social realm with barriers, walls, likely a melting of one's self conception as isolated, with the social realm, ultimately viewing the social realm as an extension of the self and as such that general concept of "dying on the hill of one's beliefs". *The body as a social statement.* Cutting is an inherently So/Sp act. Ah yes, first we must define something: SP = Self Social = Others Sexual = Genes Yes, it really is this simple. No one is "blind" to an instinct, and a majority of people harmonize with those instincts to live fulling (as defined by their enneatype and instinctual variant order) lives. What the concept of "blindness" attempts to describe is a turning away from that instinct so that it's relegated from conscious action, and instead becomes an underlying thread within the unconscious. It becomes fully supplemental in the triad of instincts. Some people seem to think that in this instance, the instinctual variants are acted upon as 3 equidistant, intersecting, lines and that one can only move along the perimeter of the triangle. Shift your perception to include the fact that one can move *inside* of the triangle, within the area, and it becomes clearer. In fact, someone can stand right in the center of the triangle. Further, is that not the goal? Bodily closeness is an inherently Sp/So and So/Sp act. The body, Sp, reaches out towards another (So) and pulls them in to be as close as possible. Seeing touching, melting into each other's bodies, coexistence and bodily mixing as intimacy. Those that fall furthest from Sx, look towards those of their romantic interest as their body parts first. They wish to get as close as possible, your look and appeal. Collages made by them will feature isolated body parts or wishing to be swallowed whole into a higher concept, such as water (their emotion), absolving themselves of self concept because to exist is to survive. Endure. Looking to the stars, looking towards the unknown, do they wish to place their trust in that higher forces will take care of them. On the other hand, rather than reduce to the body, the Sexual instinct reduces others to their *genes* or *traits* which they will release into the gene pool. It's looking for the perfect *mate*. It's a fully objectifying lens, not seeking closeness but replication as a form of intimacy. The act of sex itself: to penetrate (live), to cum (die), to inseminate/birth (replicate). Thus you will see the femme fatale is a Sexual archetype. There is no use for another when the act of sex has been completed; the object of attraction is granted permission to die. Integrating back into broad definitions of the instinctual variants' individual roles in the personality, the tertiary instinct, *not* the blindspot, is supplementary. If SP is at L2 and SO is at L4, then the sexual instinct still has a gravitational effect on SP and SO, as do they have one on it. You could describe the person as the sun, the Dom as the Earth, Aux as the moon, and Tert as Theia(ignoring the fact that the moon and Theia logically can't coexist, as Theia's impact with Earth is what created the moon. Bare with me though). Curiously, this means that the instincts do not have complete control over one or the other, or that they are subservient to the Dom, but rather they have their own individual influences. However, it is the person themselves which anchors the instincts, not the other way around. Yes, instincts play the most significant role in our lives, but those instincts don't begin to manifest until just before birth. Ultimately more metaphorical approach, this means that Theia or the Tertiary instinct still falls into step along with the other instincts, it's just dancing to the beat of its own drum unlike the moon, the Auxiliary instinct, which is tidal locked. Certain concepts deal with the harmony of the personality, not its discordance and as such when you do introduce concepts such as tri-fix or tritype, you can only use it as a typing maneuver to encompass that which harmonizes, not the cacophony. Some use tritype to explain a push and a pull within their personalities, such as a push and pull between wanting individuality, feeling unique and disconnected from everyone else but also being chronically attached to others, desiring connection and sharing their life. Unfortunately, this is not a 94x, this is simply a 9. An axis between individuality and self-narcotization perfectly describes the inner turmoil of the 9: dissolution in others or complete stagnancy to hold onto what is them. "Do humans have souls?"

Enneagrammer answers this question through pointing to the Social instinct. It's the most traditional view of transcending or absolving oneself of karmic debt. Luckovich specifically references the social instinct as the instinct which searches for the meaning of life; the one would posit the premise of this altogether. To them, the social instinct is the journey to transcendence, as transcendence is to absolve oneself of the self entirely, and instead connect or attach oneself to a higher collective / the collective unconscious / the universe / God / Kami, etc. As they utilize the bhavacakra as a representation of the 6 instinct types, with Sx/So beginning life as the closest to transcendence and as such the easiest life or as they've so titled, "God" for they have already transcended. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have the Sp/Sx, but rather than refer to it as the "Devil," it is instead referred to as "Hell". This is entirely intentional, as to be the devil, one would have transcended to godhood and be aware or at the very least oriented and connected enough into the social realm to act as an antagonistic force against it. In limiting Sp/Sx to, "Hell," Gray attempts to dehumanize the social blinds stemming from the conclusion that they don't have enough personhood to be referred to as a *being* of representation. They are simply, humans in the most animalistic way possible. You'll hear this tooted often on the podcast, how social blinds lack the ability to connect altogether, and as such have no hope of ever being human or even a person. Through my interpretation, I'm actually awarding *more* humanity to social blinds than Gray does. Sx/Sp is referred to as the "Hungry Ghost" because it's looking to restore its humanity by feasting on the souls of those who are worth replicating through based on the gene pool. Obviously, it's determined through the realm of sex. Through feasting on a soul, it's able to take in as much energy as theoretically possible to change and transform itself in hopes of becoming something higher, or perhaps, in his interpretation they aren't even aware of that desire and instead feast aimlessly. You could think of it like a black hole, keeping up with my more astronomical reference of the instinctual variants. To eat and absorb as much energy as possible (live), feel it well up inside like a witch burning at the stake and lose oneself to the scalding of flesh and the melting of innards (die), and then reassimilate, born anew wearing a completely different skin, but retaining the gene pool of the mate and themselves (replicate). A common misinterpretation of the Sexual instinct is that it must be interested in others, intensifies *outward* experiences, is easily visible *outwardly*, wrenches attention towards it, and that it can't go unhidden or veiled even by the deftest of chameleons. Unfortunately, this is actually an incredible social view of the instinct. If someone is constantly looking to incite ire, flame, disrupt the social environment, intensify the social experience, lock onto others, they are using the *social* instinct. To put it simply, Sexual instinct when influenced by Sp intensifies the *inward* experience, and when it's influenced by Social it intensifies the *outward* experience. Social blinds are known for being able to entertain themselves without reaching outward because they are intensifying their own experiences without needing to be other referencing or receive reciprocation or reciprocity. However there's an interesting conundrum. If this possibility exists, why would the Sx/Sp be referred to as the, "Hungry Ghost" if it could simply feast on its own innards and asexually reproduce? That's the thing, *it doesn't*. Sp/Sx is what does that, *NOT* Sx/Sp. There's a difference between looking outward or pushing outward, and looking for *genes* to intensify the *self* or internal experience. In this instance, David Gray's Interpretation makes sense, because then Sx/Sp and Sp/Sx have no reason to be interested in anyone but themselves and the genes they want. Earlier, I referenced cutting as an inherently So/Sp act; using the body as a social statement; "I show my cuts so the world knows my pain and that they're not alone." The Sx/Sp uses cuts as a symbol of *sexual attraction*, the body itself, as a symbol of sexual attraction. It's a way to maneuver the gene pool by showing off their traits, their mating dance, to the person who will cause such visceral change in them that it is akin to self-rebirth. Their tune isn't as visible, or rather, they aren't trying to appeal to as many people as possible for mating purposes, but rather the *one* in the room. Referring back to "God," the Sx/So, we will see that it's referred to as such because it's injecting flame into the social environment, piercing it to the traits that it desires to evolve. So/Sx, dutifly referred to as simply, "Human" because it's what flows naturally, sorting through and orienting one's lens towards others, taking on the beliefs and convictions of others, putting the self out there in order to take care of the off spring as well as use those connections to find the genes that one would wish to spread. Perhaps one could refer to it as a maternal view of the social instinct in this case, because the dominance of the social instinct forces sexual into a more nurturing role. Here, the social instinct is viewed as a softer instinct. What Gray and Luckovich posit with "Sp blindness" is that here none of the energy is taken inward to protect oneself, create boundaries, and intensify one's own; self sacrifice for the sake of the whole. "God," "Humans," and, "Titans," represented by So/Sp; the Titans which procreate and create the gods or rather, facilitate the creation of a world which allows them altogether. The focus is not on procreation, but everything afterwards: society, nurturing, sowing the seeds of creation, dying for their causes, creating a world for others to live in and subsequently, food for the Gods to eat as they are birthed by the Humans on the other side of the heavens. Curiously, they also act as a symbol of reigning in the power of the gods, and acting as a stifling force to stop humanity from going out of bounds and destroying their foundation. This is the dampening effect of Sp, represented by the element of Earth. If you inject the social, represented by the element of Air into the Earth, all that is happening is an expansion of the crust. More space inside of the perimeter is created, but the bounds still exist. Much like when Chronus ate the Gods when they were born and trapped them in his stomach, limiting their growth, ambitions, and imposing a set area of which they were allowed to act. Hopefully, all of this will help everyone understand why this theory refers to Sp/So as, "Animal". The beings which exist in the bounds created by everything else, are poached as food for the Hungry Ghosts, forced into the rules and bounds of the Titans, and endure the revolutions of the Gods attempting to destroy or push the bounds, so that they can escape the limiters. It doesn't grant them significance, it doesn't grant them autonomy, it lowers them to food or fodder.

Why do you think the BHE crew + their fb group gatekeep 4s and soc-blind stacking so much? I understand that 4s and soc-blind users are less frequent than other types and instincts, but I don't know. The only avowed core 4s are two mods and the ex-SO from one of them. And the only collages typed as sx/sp in their ig account are by, again, two mods and the ex-SO again. There are some, but very, very few, whom have being typed as sp/sx. This, for me, is weird because according to their own literature is the three more common stacking, being sp/so and so/sp the more frequent. But, instead, there are tons of people being typed as sx/so, the least frequent (according to their site). I don't know, some things feel weird.

One could argue that soc-blind users don't tend to lingers in typology communities due their lack of needing to... well, connect. But, then, at least four of them have stated that they actually meet through typology forums. How can the mods be social blind and still building a huge community? It didn't happen by accident, they put effort on the site, the fb group, the pod... I don't know if I am making sense here.

I think the 4 thing and the social stacking thing are separate issues; one potential reason for them not typing many 4s or 4-fixers is that 4s don't ask for help. They are withdrawn types, which means they are self-reliant and not as inclined to ask for someone to tell them who they are -- they are busy projecting and cultivating who they are, every minute of every day. The one "for sure" 4 I know would never ask anyone else to tell her what her Enneagram type is -- but if you showed her a 4 description (not a 9-as-a-4 "happy" 4, but a real one) she would completely identify with feeling like a broken alien who got stuck here in a world where nobody understands her. It's similar to why so few 5s get typed -- they also don't ask for help as much. But the attachment types (3/6/9) want help the most, because they feel confused, may relate to multiple types (especially if 9, who "sees themselves in a lot of numbers"), and need others to affirm their evaluation; they also get "attached" to whatever type they think they are and can be defensive about it, since they are attaching to and using that type as a projection of "identity."

The second possibility is that tritype is not only nonsense and irrelevant, but a way to confuse the issue, explain away all inconsistencies, and make a wrong typing fit -- the ability to say "oh this person doesn't relate to this number, but that's just cuz of their second fix." IE, "I am a 4 with a 9 fix, so I don't broadcast my sense of alienation or negativity in order to keep others happy." Nah, you are just a 9 if that's the case. Regarding the stacking issues... well, Emeka doesn't update the Instagram account that much, does he? I wouldn't know; I don't do most social media. The explanation might also be that social blinds wouldn't see the point of submitting collages (who cares what others think of me; I don't need their feedback) and that social-users are more inclined to share a lot of collages / make a lot of them, as a way to connect to others.

Joseph started the Facebook page -- he's a social-dominant; but I don't think most of the soc-blinds interact on social media much. But yes, they are building a following -- as a source of revenue (sp), because they want paid (a lot) to tell you who they think you are, based entirely on visual typing. They have assumptions about how certain types act, take photos, dress, what they put on their Instagram pages, and present themselves, and type you and/or celebs based off these things rather than internal motivations or core desires. If you wrinkle your forehead a lot, or are visually facially expressive, you are a 6, etc. They look at your Instagram page to see what stacking you are, then they watch your video on mute to visually type you, and then having decided what type they think you are, they listen to your video to see if what you say confirms their assumption.

If you feel something is "off" about them, use your discernment. Trust your instincts. Question everything you learn from them, to see if it makes rational sense. If it doesn't (such as "most people are sp/so, but we have mostly sx/so collages in our Instagram"), then take note of that inconsistency and use it going forward in being skeptical and seeking more evidence. If something seems wildly off, don't trust it.

Hello, I was wondering on your thoughts on typing IVs by photo collages/moodboards? I saw that the enneagrammer does this method but I’m assuming it’s not a very good way to type someone

Just a few months ago i would have been more generous and have said that yes, there can be some information be drawn from collages/moodboards/blogs. But actually the more research went into it, the more "IV aesthetics" turn out to be just "heart-fix aesthetics" and have almost nothing to do with IV.

A 2-fix sx-dom will make blander and more normie moodboards than a 4-fix sx-blind.

I know they don't judge by blandness but instead more on the chosen themes or something? Maybe they are seeing something I don't (entirely possible) but on the examples that I found so far i couldn't see any actual clues and typing based on that all just seemed like rolling a dice.

(Mis)Understanding Type 4 PT 2

Introduction 

This is a Rant/Informative post on how people misunderstand enneagram 4.  I would suggest checking enneagrammers type 4 section cuz its well written and its probably one of the best ways to clear allot of misunderstanding plus I'll be referencing it allot...like allot. ill go over some common mistypings ive seen around as well as misconceptions and certain nuances people often ignore. 

Every type is and wants to be special its not limited to E4. 

“4’s don’t want to be separate, they’re coming from a place of already being so. 4's are unaware of how to modulate themselves to anything if it contradicts their inner experience.” This often leads for people to not understand how type 4s work and end up mistyping others due to certain believe that wanting to be unique and special is SOLELY a type 4 trait. All enneatypes want to be special and stand out in their own way. Especially when it comes to attachment types because “Often the attachment types get stuck to the idea of being a 4 because they are dealing with a type structure that consciously fighting against the unconscious urge to actually be in sync with others.”

Some Misconceptions 

“Being candid about traumatic experiences (this can be anyone, but less likely a withdrawn type)

Self-deprecation (this is seen most often in 6's and 9's especially if there's 4 in the trifix, also 7w6)

Being artistic (any type can be artistic, 4's just have a specific aesthetic expression need that's tied into their type structure)

Being depressed (depression and/or sadness are emotions/conditions that can be experienced by all types, even bright 7's, and many 4's are not depressed at all)

Being moody/dramatic (4's do tend to be reactive and moody, but so do 6's and 7w8’s)

Being unique or weird (4's individuate constantly, but any type can do unique and strange things, ex. Lady GaGa is a 7, Björk is a 9)

Being overly emotional (all types have emotions, not all types identify with them, but type 6 as the most outwardly emotional type in some cases)

Enduring pain on the inside and having to smile on the outside (this is highly 9ish and not ever 4ish)

Feeling detached from mainstream things (this is true of 4, but any type can be sardonic and biting about "basic" people or mainstream things, type 6 for example can either be the one doing what everyone else is doing or the one who's sarcastically speaking out against it)

Fearing being flawed (4’s feel that the world is shallow and flawed and they are too deep for it, this creates a frustration and fantasy around their superior self-image)”

Mistyping 4s 

 When it comes to 3s- Two common mistyping when it comes to attachment types are Pearl (ESFP 3w2 so/sx) and Asuka Langley Soryu (ENTJ 3w4 so/sx) Being typed as  4w3 sx/so. Due to their need to stand out HOWEVER their need to stand out and be their BEST SELF Pearl being a Star who is seen as great and love by the public while Asuka being the best EVA Pilot and proving her competency. While a sx 4 would present an image of brokenness and sadness look at Prince Zuko for example (ISFP 4w3 sx/sp) he presents an Image of brokenness and constantly over indulges in anger and melancholy. Also Pearl and Asuka a wtihdrawn type...no. Both of these two are way too expressive to be 4s. Also very clear attachment types. In Asuka’s case we see she searches for love in being the best Eva pilot and creating interpersonal relationships in school while Pearl does this through status and becoming a Star.

When it Comes to 6s- a common mistyping I see its Mitski (INFP 6w5 sp/sx) Due to the self preservation 6 being on the most reserved side of things and both can complain allot due to both being in the reactive triad however when it comes to separating and differentiating these types is that a 6 is still craving connection (due to being an attachment type) and 4s are a rejection type while sure they want to make connection they might negate it all together. Also 6s are incredibly interested In problem solving and are interested in dissecting an issue while 4s dont really care about problem solving “However, 6's will still display a need for acceptance, a fear of being cast away, and they will emphasize how different/problematic they are as if it's a problem/danger to be put on the table right away. Even when 6's are at their most negative, they still tend to be funny and likeable.”

When it comes to 7- I typed Jules Vaugh as a 4 in my ENFP characters post and I might go back on that however for a very clear mistyping of a 7 as a 4 is Laurie “Theodore” Lawrence from little woman 2019. In my opinion Laurie is a ISFP 7w6 sx/so rathe than a sp 4w5. The differences between 4 and 7 are a bit more notable even tho both of them are frustration types. 7s tend to be highly positive individuals who are constantly looking for good expiernces and understanding of the world. 4s on the other hadn't complain about what they don't have and focuses on the negative aspects more. 4s are withdrawn types while 7s are positive types. I just dont get how Laurie is a 4 im sorry. I thought his journey was very clear that Amy pushed him to integrate to his 1 while he was wasting his life and talents. it

 Comes to 9s- This is probably the most continuous out of the previous type you'll notice that most 4s in media are probably mistyped 9s (I myself mistyped Amanda Young From the Saw Franchise as a 4w3 when it makes more sense for her to be a 9w8 sx/sp) But the most common mistypings ive seen in this case is Wanda Maximoff (INFP 9w8 sx/sp) and Camille Preaker (INFP 9w8 sx/sp) Mostly you'll see them typed as 4w5 sp/sx or sx/sp in Wanda’s Case. 4s tend to hate masking their disdain for things and others while 9s tend to present a more calm exterior. In the case of Camille and Wanda both Sx 9s they care about interpersonal relationships and dont have the boundry in interpersonal relationship 4s have. They see themselves as specially unique in comparison to orders. Due to being in the gut type 9s are prone to anger and tend to struggle with this. A thing we see with Wand and Camille struggle with. Both of them go into a haze of sort when it comes to dealing with problem rather than dealing with them like any assertive type like 4 would. Also it's very clear that both of them are attachment types not frustration types. 

There are some other mistyping such as 8 vs 4 but I just think that’s plain misunderstanding.

what are questions you ask yourself when determining one's mbti, or more specifically functions? same with enneagram, instinctual variants, and tritypes.

just asking because I feel like it's best to ask someone who knows about this pretty well than having an amateur like me try to determine these things myself.

I recommend you do most of your studying from books, since they usually collect all the data you need in one place. For example, if you thought you were an ISTP you could read the Ti-dom section in my book on personality types and then spend time considerng if that's how your mind works. And so on. Beyond that...

For MBTI - learn about the functions and then spend time self-observing to see if that is how your mind works and that reinforces certain behaviors that fit that type. Ask yourself how you are at ease and what you prefer to do vs. what is hard for you to do and/or what behaviors manifest under stress, and match them up with a type.

The Enneagram involves deeper inner work and being honest about your motivations. That involves a process of learning about the types and then introspection. Some people immediately know their type and can start inner work (the hard part), others get confused, are unaware of their inner self, don't know how to self-reflect, or do not want to "be" the type that stung them the hardest. Finding your type is something of a painful experience because it exposes all your flaws and deeper anxieties and people find that quite shame-inducing. But it can also be easier to start with the traids --

Assertive types (3, 7, 8) -- when they want things, they get them, sometimes by going around or through people who get in their way. Out of touch with the heart center/disconnected from soft feelings.

Superego types (1, 2, 6) -- move toward people to solicit help or a sense of community, work with people to find a solution when things go wrong, have an internal critic that harps on what they "should" do. Out of touch with the head center/disconnected from productive thinking (finding solutions instead of over-thinking about perfection, relationships, or strategizing "in case" things go wrong).

Withdrawn types (4, 5, 9) -- rely on self over others to solve problems, retreats from others to solve problems. Out of touch with the gut center/disconnected from productivity (they think about things but don't do them, procrastinate, wind up with not much to show for their time, struggle to act quickly).

Subtypes -- read John Lucovich's book on them, or the page about them on Enneagrammer and then pay attention to your focus of attention, what thoughts preoccupy you -- that's your dominant instinct.

Tritype -- save this for last and don't try to find it until you are solid on all other aspects of the Enneagram, since it's relatively unimportant and too easy to use fixes as an "excuse" for why a core type does not work the same way in you that it does in other people (mistype). If you are being honest, your core type should align pretty well with what's written about it at the medium health levels, and you should have evidence of the wing and accessing the lines. Tritype-wise, apply the same self-introspection you used to find your core to the other heart/head/gut centers and let it bleed to the surface.

The purpose of Enneagram is introspection and self-awareness, so there are no short cuts. This will be hard, but worth doing.
