Enneagram Instinctual Variants Write-Up (03/12/2022)
The following is merely a port of an entry I wrote in my diary in an attempt to understand my instinctual variant stack, which then evolved into a brief extrapolation of what I believe the instincts truly are. Nothing more. If I conceptually understand the instincts, then even replication of each one should be relatively easy. Further, though I wish to know my instincts, it's a relatively useless concept that is more in the realm of spirituality than psychology. That is—it seeks to explain that which isolates humanity from any other animal, as well as that which keeps it in the kingdom of animalia. The question of old, "do humans have souls?" It seeks to derive from your interpersonal influence, as well as our drives fundamentally. If I avoid the use of instinct, readily this becomes somewhat akin to a, "soul journey," or that which spiritualists may describe as your "karmic path". The dominant instinct being that which is safe, what you know and what you are drawn towards the most. With the auxiliary, a ~~function~~ *instinct* that under normal circumstance of, "synflow" being that which the dominant instinct uses to fulfill its desire. Interestingly, while in synflow Sp -> So -> Sx, the way that the instincts are used is actually in reverse. In Sp/So, the social instinct reinforces the Sp, not the other way around. So since the auxiliary is seen as more of a tool than a basic necessity, it gets relegated to the healthiest expression. However in contraflow, the order of use is actually the opposite, the Sp would flow into the So, this would mean reinforcing the social realm with barriers, walls, likely a melting of one's self conception as isolated, with the social realm, ultimately viewing the social realm as an extension of the self and as such that general concept of "dying on the hill of one's beliefs". *The body as a social statement.* Cutting is an inherently So/Sp act. Ah yes, first we must define something: SP = Self Social = Others Sexual = Genes Yes, it really is this simple. No one is "blind" to an instinct, and a majority of people harmonize with those instincts to live fulling (as defined by their enneatype and instinctual variant order) lives. What the concept of "blindness" attempts to describe is a turning away from that instinct so that it's relegated from conscious action, and instead becomes an underlying thread within the unconscious. It becomes fully supplemental in the triad of instincts. Some people seem to think that in this instance, the instinctual variants are acted upon as 3 equidistant, intersecting, lines and that one can only move along the perimeter of the triangle. Shift your perception to include the fact that one can move *inside* of the triangle, within the area, and it becomes clearer. In fact, someone can stand right in the center of the triangle. Further, is that not the goal? Bodily closeness is an inherently Sp/So and So/Sp act. The body, Sp, reaches out towards another (So) and pulls them in to be as close as possible. Seeing touching, melting into each other's bodies, coexistence and bodily mixing as intimacy. Those that fall furthest from Sx, look towards those of their romantic interest as their body parts first. They wish to get as close as possible, your look and appeal. Collages made by them will feature isolated body parts or wishing to be swallowed whole into a higher concept, such as water (their emotion), absolving themselves of self concept because to exist is to survive. Endure. Looking to the stars, looking towards the unknown, do they wish to place their trust in that higher forces will take care of them. On the other hand, rather than reduce to the body, the Sexual instinct reduces others to their *genes* or *traits* which they will release into the gene pool. It's looking for the perfect *mate*. It's a fully objectifying lens, not seeking closeness but replication as a form of intimacy. The act of sex itself: to penetrate (live), to cum (die), to inseminate/birth (replicate). Thus you will see the femme fatale is a Sexual archetype. There is no use for another when the act of sex has been completed; the object of attraction is granted permission to die. Integrating back into broad definitions of the instinctual variants' individual roles in the personality, the tertiary instinct, *not* the blindspot, is supplementary. If SP is at L2 and SO is at L4, then the sexual instinct still has a gravitational effect on SP and SO, as do they have one on it. You could describe the person as the sun, the Dom as the Earth, Aux as the moon, and Tert as Theia(ignoring the fact that the moon and Theia logically can't coexist, as Theia's impact with Earth is what created the moon. Bare with me though). Curiously, this means that the instincts do not have complete control over one or the other, or that they are subservient to the Dom, but rather they have their own individual influences. However, it is the person themselves which anchors the instincts, not the other way around. Yes, instincts play the most significant role in our lives, but those instincts don't begin to manifest until just before birth. Ultimately more metaphorical approach, this means that Theia or the Tertiary instinct still falls into step along with the other instincts, it's just dancing to the beat of its own drum unlike the moon, the Auxiliary instinct, which is tidal locked. Certain concepts deal with the harmony of the personality, not its discordance and as such when you do introduce concepts such as tri-fix or tritype, you can only use it as a typing maneuver to encompass that which harmonizes, not the cacophony. Some use tritype to explain a push and a pull within their personalities, such as a push and pull between wanting individuality, feeling unique and disconnected from everyone else but also being chronically attached to others, desiring connection and sharing their life. Unfortunately, this is not a 94x, this is simply a 9. An axis between individuality and self-narcotization perfectly describes the inner turmoil of the 9: dissolution in others or complete stagnancy to hold onto what is them. "Do humans have souls?"
Enneagrammer answers this question through pointing to the Social instinct. It's the most traditional view of transcending or absolving oneself of karmic debt. Luckovich specifically references the social instinct as the instinct which searches for the meaning of life; the one would posit the premise of this altogether. To them, the social instinct is the journey to transcendence, as transcendence is to absolve oneself of the self entirely, and instead connect or attach oneself to a higher collective / the collective unconscious / the universe / God / Kami, etc. As they utilize the bhavacakra as a representation of the 6 instinct types, with Sx/So beginning life as the closest to transcendence and as such the easiest life or as they've so titled, "God" for they have already transcended. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have the Sp/Sx, but rather than refer to it as the "Devil," it is instead referred to as "Hell". This is entirely intentional, as to be the devil, one would have transcended to godhood and be aware or at the very least oriented and connected enough into the social realm to act as an antagonistic force against it. In limiting Sp/Sx to, "Hell," Gray attempts to dehumanize the social blinds stemming from the conclusion that they don't have enough personhood to be referred to as a *being* of representation. They are simply, humans in the most animalistic way possible. You'll hear this tooted often on the podcast, how social blinds lack the ability to connect altogether, and as such have no hope of ever being human or even a person. Through my interpretation, I'm actually awarding *more* humanity to social blinds than Gray does. Sx/Sp is referred to as the "Hungry Ghost" because it's looking to restore its humanity by feasting on the souls of those who are worth replicating through based on the gene pool. Obviously, it's determined through the realm of sex. Through feasting on a soul, it's able to take in as much energy as theoretically possible to change and transform itself in hopes of becoming something higher, or perhaps, in his interpretation they aren't even aware of that desire and instead feast aimlessly. You could think of it like a black hole, keeping up with my more astronomical reference of the instinctual variants. To eat and absorb as much energy as possible (live), feel it well up inside like a witch burning at the stake and lose oneself to the scalding of flesh and the melting of innards (die), and then reassimilate, born anew wearing a completely different skin, but retaining the gene pool of the mate and themselves (replicate). A common misinterpretation of the Sexual instinct is that it must be interested in others, intensifies *outward* experiences, is easily visible *outwardly*, wrenches attention towards it, and that it can't go unhidden or veiled even by the deftest of chameleons. Unfortunately, this is actually an incredible social view of the instinct. If someone is constantly looking to incite ire, flame, disrupt the social environment, intensify the social experience, lock onto others, they are using the *social* instinct. To put it simply, Sexual instinct when influenced by Sp intensifies the *inward* experience, and when it's influenced by Social it intensifies the *outward* experience. Social blinds are known for being able to entertain themselves without reaching outward because they are intensifying their own experiences without needing to be other referencing or receive reciprocation or reciprocity. However there's an interesting conundrum. If this possibility exists, why would the Sx/Sp be referred to as the, "Hungry Ghost" if it could simply feast on its own innards and asexually reproduce? That's the thing, *it doesn't*. Sp/Sx is what does that, *NOT* Sx/Sp. There's a difference between looking outward or pushing outward, and looking for *genes* to intensify the *self* or internal experience. In this instance, David Gray's Interpretation makes sense, because then Sx/Sp and Sp/Sx have no reason to be interested in anyone but themselves and the genes they want. Earlier, I referenced cutting as an inherently So/Sp act; using the body as a social statement; "I show my cuts so the world knows my pain and that they're not alone." The Sx/Sp uses cuts as a symbol of *sexual attraction*, the body itself, as a symbol of sexual attraction. It's a way to maneuver the gene pool by showing off their traits, their mating dance, to the person who will cause such visceral change in them that it is akin to self-rebirth. Their tune isn't as visible, or rather, they aren't trying to appeal to as many people as possible for mating purposes, but rather the *one* in the room. Referring back to "God," the Sx/So, we will see that it's referred to as such because it's injecting flame into the social environment, piercing it to the traits that it desires to evolve. So/Sx, dutifly referred to as simply, "Human" because it's what flows naturally, sorting through and orienting one's lens towards others, taking on the beliefs and convictions of others, putting the self out there in order to take care of the off spring as well as use those connections to find the genes that one would wish to spread. Perhaps one could refer to it as a maternal view of the social instinct in this case, because the dominance of the social instinct forces sexual into a more nurturing role. Here, the social instinct is viewed as a softer instinct. What Gray and Luckovich posit with "Sp blindness" is that here none of the energy is taken inward to protect oneself, create boundaries, and intensify one's own; self sacrifice for the sake of the whole. "God," "Humans," and, "Titans," represented by So/Sp; the Titans which procreate and create the gods or rather, facilitate the creation of a world which allows them altogether. The focus is not on procreation, but everything afterwards: society, nurturing, sowing the seeds of creation, dying for their causes, creating a world for others to live in and subsequently, food for the Gods to eat as they are birthed by the Humans on the other side of the heavens. Curiously, they also act as a symbol of reigning in the power of the gods, and acting as a stifling force to stop humanity from going out of bounds and destroying their foundation. This is the dampening effect of Sp, represented by the element of Earth. If you inject the social, represented by the element of Air into the Earth, all that is happening is an expansion of the crust. More space inside of the perimeter is created, but the bounds still exist. Much like when Chronus ate the Gods when they were born and trapped them in his stomach, limiting their growth, ambitions, and imposing a set area of which they were allowed to act. Hopefully, all of this will help everyone understand why this theory refers to Sp/So as, "Animal". The beings which exist in the bounds created by everything else, are poached as food for the Hungry Ghosts, forced into the rules and bounds of the Titans, and endure the revolutions of the Gods attempting to destroy or push the bounds, so that they can escape the limiters. It doesn't grant them significance, it doesn't grant them autonomy, it lowers them to food or fodder.

Sx-blinds Mistyping as So-blinds
I never made a proper post about this, but I’m seeing an ever-increasing number of people that from my observations mistype themselves as so-blind (usually as sp/sx, since secondary so is harder to type) or as so/sx but are actually sx-blinds that don’t understand the soc instinct or are in complete denial that they don’t understand sx either. This seems to be a popular topic as of late and I think it would now be an appropriate time to post this. As an sx-blind myself I hope to offer a different perspective on sx-blind motivations and faults. There are many questions about soc/sx-blindness that I wanted to answer in this post (like what passion means to sx-blinds, what do you think is soc’s best quality, how can I tell if I’m sx-blind or just have a 9 core/strong fix), but for some sort of consistency in this tertiary Ti infodump I will elaborate on those in a different post.

You know about my trauma, you know about my problems with dissociation, you have a boyfriend of your own, and yet you still spent years grooming me to do and say whatever you want, to let you try to plan my life for me by getting me to move across the world to a country with no safety net and isolate me from everything I know, by talking about how you loved me and wanted to marry me, all while putting on a show for everyone else pretending that you’d never get involved with someone so young and keep it secret. You sent me your porn blog and told me you’d been  thinking I would be into shit like hypno porn the entire time you’ve known me, when I was a minor for almost that entire time. You wanted to groom me to be into being a hypno slave so you could get me to join your cult and get special treatment from your master. You told me you and your boyfriend were both poly and he would come along, and you didn’t care if he did anyways, when it clearly hurts him. You’ve admitted you love controlling people, said I had an impressionable mind that would accept anything you told me, talked about what drugs you wanted me to take so you could make me into the mindless toy you want me to be, so I could perfectly fit into your cult. But then, all of a sudden, I talk to your boyfriend about what you were saying to me, and I tell you I’m gonna ask my friend what she thinks of how you treat me, and now you’re sorry? Now you’ve realized you fucked up? After two years of grooming me, all it took to understand how evil this all is was the chance that I wouldn’t lie for you and protect you anymore? Now I’m weird and gross because I couldn’t delete the feelings I had for you after you talked about wanting to marry me, the feelings you groomed me to have, because people are finding out about what you do? The Enneagram Subtypes Development Master Post!
This table is published by Susan Rhodes, “On The Nature of the Enneagram Subtypes”. She discussed ways in which the nine types and 27 subtypes can serve as a guide to discover dharma (our path in life) and to transform in a way that enhances our ability to be of service to life.
Table A-1 “The Traditional Subtypes” is what the author complied from existing books and articles.
Table A-2 “The Transformed Subtypes” depicted the positive roles for each subtypes. The idea what transforming the negative subtype behaviors listed in A-1 would result in transfigured behaviour described in A-2.
Table A-3 “The Dharmic Subtypes” is a devising set of descriptors that focus on the kinds of challenges we encountered in everyday life, but which reflect an appreciation for the value of each subtype in teaching us specific kinds of life lessons. To add some context, dharma in Sanskrit means: “that which upholds or supports the natural law of the universe” a.k.a. that which is life supporting and in tune with the purpose of creation or living in accordance to our nature and using our full potential to the best of our abilities.

(not all the nouns follow these rules, but they can still be helpful)
nouns ending in -(e)n in plural
nouns endling in -e, and most femenine nouns will add an -(e)n ending in the plural

“someone thinks/knows...” sentences in german
to think - denken (a weak verb)
there are two ways to form a sentence with the verb to think
the first one does not use any conjunctions:
ich denke, ich trinke Tee - i think i will drink tea
ich denke, ich fahre nach berlin - i think i will go to berlin
er denkt, wir sollten das zusammen machen - he thinks we should do this together
wir denken, das ist genug für heute - we think that is enough for today
sie denkt, sie kann das machen - she thinks she can do this
wir denken, nicht über das - we don’t think about that
don’t forget to put the comma after denken!
the second one uses the conjunction dass and puts the second verb at the end of the sentence:
ich denke, dass ich Niederlandisch lernen möchte - i think that i want to learn dutch
ich denke, dass anna Pasta isst - i think that anna is eating pasta
ich denke, dass ich schön bin - i think that i am beautiful
ich denke, dass ich jetzt nach Hause gehe - i think that i am going home now
sie denkt, dass ich schlafen bin - she thinks that i am asleep
don’t forget to put the comma after denken!
the same two ways work for the verb to know - wissen 
wissen is a strong verb:
ich weiß, du weißt, er/sie/es weiß, wir wissen, ihr wisst, sie wissen

ich weiß, dass du nach berlin fährst - i know that you are going to berlin

german imperative
imperative is used for instructions, guides, requests, advice, bans, warnings etc.
imperative can only be formed for the pronouns du (singular informal you), ihr (plural you) and Sie (singular formal you)
to form imperative for the pronoun du you need to take off the -st ending: 
kommst! fahrst! machst!
to form imperative for the pronoun ihr you need to just take the verb in the present tense for the pronoun ihr:
kommt! fahrt! macht!
to form imperative for the pronoun Sie you need to take the verb in the present tense for the pronoun Sie and put the pronoun Sie after it:
kommen Sie! fahren Sie! machen Sie!
some stem vowel changes:
there is a vowel change for the pronoun du: e changes to i or ie:
essen: iss den Salat!
geben: gib mir ein paar Minuten Zeit!
lesen: lies dieses Gedicht!
sehen: sieh dir den Film heute an!
imperative for the verbs ending in -t, -d, -m, -n:
these verbs add -e:
arbeiten: arbeite nicht bis zum spät! / arbeitet zusammen! 
atmen: atme die frische Luft! / atmet die Seeluft!
finden: finde dir ein Hobby! / findet das Geschenk!
heiraten: heirate nicht im Mai! / heiratet mal endlich!

How I Study German
@anikaness​ asked if I had tips to studying german, so here is a post! I’m starting with the basics, then branching out btw
I am on the german 6 memrise course, and when I get into the habit of studying (I definitely have off days and weeks where I only do reviews or ignore the app entirely), I try to learn at least half a level of words per day. memrise is an amazing source for vocabulary, and duolingo is better for context sentences.
speaking of, I’ve been strengthening my duo skills to level five lately. aside from vocab, duo is okay-ish at building a foundation for grammar. in my opinion, it doesn’t have enough structure for teaching grammar, so go out of your way to find practice exercises online. 
hinative – the language learner’s holy grail, second only to lang-8 – if you have a question about anything in your target language, ask on this app and get native responses.
“Slowly” is a phone app that allows to message people around the world, but I find it useful for language study. you can speak with natives in your target language, and it’s a good chance for you to actively reproduce the language.
journaling is another great way to reproduce the language. I post journal-esque entries on tumblr, but it’s usually the ones which I know I need the most help. I often try more difficult grammar points when writing on tumblr because I know I can get feed back. a couple times a month, I’ll also write in a physical journal (aim for more frequently if you can). I’ve been busy lately, but I hope to make another journal post here soon to act as redemption lmao
consume media! I haven’t found access to many german series unfortunately. I tend to watch short news segments, and when there isn’t anything I want to watch, I’ll just put on the german dub of an american show. (I’m essentially a child and honestly I dislike consuming new media, so watching gravity falls or ninjago dubs makes me happy). that said, you have to be an active viewer; look up words you don’t know, write down grammar questions to look up later, and try to watch without subs whenever you can if you’re at that level.
other tips:
listen to every new word’s pronunciation even if you think you know it
talk aloud to yourself as much as possible
find a reason to learn the language
question everything and be curious! why this declension? what’s the difference? can I also say ___?
say the sounds you can’t make constantly (for me, the german R is near impossible to make, so I need to practice constantly)
come to terms with your progress and proficiency… learning a language isn’t a race, and getting upset that you’re still X level won’t help you progress faster

ENTJ 1: efficient and organized, with a strong and sometimes unrealistic “perfect” vision it wants to attain in the real world through work / school, etc., more than willing to take decisive action to make it happen, but may blame others if perfection isn’t attained (due to low Fi / 1’s tendency to refuse to take responsibility when things go wrong). Prone to strong views of morality, and may push away from tert-Se desires for pleasure, and new experiences, etc., which may leave the ENTJ feeling imbalanced, angry that their morals prevent them from having fun, or envious of freer spirits. (x)
ENTJ 2: would feel a burning need to make massive changes on society, in pursuit of some futuristic vision; less hard-assed than many Te-doms, but also more vulnerable, and self-conscious about whether they are ‘everything their loved ones need’ (inferior Fi worries); often out of touch with their feelings, and prone to loneliness in their troubles, but covering it up through aggressive Te/Se behaviors. (x)
ENTJ 3: may have severe workaholic tendencies, which will result in further stinting inferior Fi development, rendering them unable to know what they truly want in life instead of simply pursuing monetary success; high Se will make them incredibly focused on impressive / expensive symbols of personal success (gorgeous partners, expensive clothing / cars, luxury items, etc); often extremely focused on their personal appearance; may ‘put all their eggs’ into one basket, and base their self-worth on whether or not they can achieve their great, over-reaching (maybe impossible) personal vision for the future. (x)
ENTJ 4: may struggle to find the right pursuit and want to craft the ideal ‘vision’ (sometimes unrealistic) to pursue; places much emphasis on their unique approach to problem-solving and has the soul of an artist; 4 stokes inferior Fi fears about relationship failures, not knowing how to connect to others, and may make them more dramatic / childish when young, when dealing with others who cannot accept them for themselves. (x)
ENTJ 5: confident in utilizing resources and in the workplace, but less social than other ENTJs and without the ‘expensive’ streak often present in tert-Se users (forgoes symbols of power or influence, possibly fearful it may draw undo negative attention); deeply analytical and tactical in their approach; may push aside intense feelings and inferior Fi refuse to deal with them, leading to relationship problems; may put too much pressure on their children to be self-reliant and frustrated if they are not. (x)
ENTJ 6: often builds their own system which enables them to feel safe, or distrusts authority other than their own; uses Se to deal with problems as they happen, but has a negative outlook on life and always prepares for the worst; may be indecisive and self-doubting, has inferior Fi issues of feeling anxious in their relationships, which combines with Ni ‘reading’ between the lines / into things overmuch. (x)
ENTJ 7:  good-humored and positive about the future, often focused on bringing about a personal vision that will make the world a better place; prone to over-indulgences via tert-Se, which paired with 7 might also make them restless and inclined to abandon projects or other people who have a more ‘dour’ view of reality; will find ways to re-frame reality to make them feel good about themselves, neglecting inferior Fi in the process. Good at innovating but prone to frustration if their vision doesn’t turn out as they planned. (x)
ENTJ 8: the energetic visionary who fills the room, who suffers no fools, and who may have a problem with grinding the opposition into dust in their pursuit of fulfillment. The 8 would play heavily into tert-Se “desires” and make them a highly energetic, insatiable type prone to over-excess; the inferior Fi might, as in the ESTJ, make their expectations for family members / children / employees higher than what they are capable of (paired with Ni’s tendency toward grand-scale expectations), while the 8 would play off Ni-perceptions in contributing to a black and white worldview. (x)
ENTJ 9: might turn their business mentality and futuristic planning skills toward global or national interests in terms of peacemaking on a huge level; their focus would be current benefits as well as long-range success; tert-Se would make them more decisive and opportunistic, but also much more inclined to avoid whatever 9 doesn’t want to deal with through excess (sex, drinking, over-indulgences, fast cars, and “playing”). Like the ESTJ-9, inferior Fi would be insecure about their emotional ability to connect to others, and lack the ability to ‘read’ them with Fe, but Ni would provide greater insight into others’ true motives. (x)
