summary: in which after going into the framework and experiences a life with you, daisy avoids you and you finally have enough

warnings: swearing, angst, fluff, that’s about it i think

notes: oh my god, i have been working on this since august and its finally done!! it's still a little rough because i haven’t edited it but i hope you like it and i’m so sorry it took so long <3 all spelling errors and grammar mistakes are my own.

Despite only being in the framework for a week, it was difficult to adjust to her everyday life before it happened. It was hard to trust the people she once trusted more than anything after seeing what their framework counterpart was capable of. It was hard to come to terms with the things that they did weren’t of their own free will. It was hard to come to terms with the fact that you weren’t hers like you were in the framework. It was hard to come back to a reality where you were nothing but a friend and a teammate. It was hard to return to a place where you didn’t love her the way she loved you.

As bad as the framework was, she got to experience a life where she was with you and it felt great. She was able to hold you and kiss you and call you hers whereas she couldn’t do that in real life. Daisy couldn’t kiss you or hold you or say you were hers because you weren’t and it hurt so bad. She didn’t know how to continue to be your friend after experiencing a life with you. It hurt Daisy to know that she could no longer feel the softness of your lips, touch, or see the unconditional love in your eyes.

Being in the real world forced her to realize that she could never have that. Daisy was forced to realize that she would be nothing more than a friend to you and that you’ve made that abundantly clear but she couldn’t. She couldn’t just be your friend anymore because her feelings were too strong. They were so strong she felt suffocated by them.

The inhuman used to be okay with that because it kept you in her life but now… now after getting that glimpse at being with you, she knew that being just friends was not enough. She wanted more but she couldn’t tell you that.

“You need to talk to her, Daisy,” Jemma tells her when they’re sitting in the lab one day, her eyes not leaving the computer. Daisy rolled her eyes at the words Jemma has said to her at least once a day every day since leaving the framework.

“I can’t, Jemma. You know I can’t.” Daisy tried to hide the bite in her voice but it didn’t work. Since leaving the fake reality created by Aida, the inhuman has been avoiding you, not sure how to tell you what happened while she was in there.

“Yeah, I know and so does everyone else that went into the framework. Everyone but Y/N that is and she misses you.” Jemma moves around the table searching for her printed lab results. “You aren’t doing anyone any good by avoiding her and your feelings. It’s quite sad, actually. Reminds me of when Fitz and I used to do that but now look at us.”

Daisy sighs and hangs her head. She thought back to the moment she woke up in the framework and felt her pulse quicken. The inhuman remembered walking out of the bathroom and finding Y/N in the bed, scrolling through her phone, and wearing a shirt that was one of Daisy’s. She still felt like her heart would burst out of her chest just thinking about it.

“I want to tell her but I can’t. Everything will be weird between us if I do, and I don’t want to risk that. Plus, she’s made it clear that I am nothing but a friend to her.” She explains to the biologist. Jemma looks like she wants to say more but refrains and goes back to her work leaving Daisy to sit in silence with her thoughts.

Daisy sat in the control center, ignoring Mack as he talked aimlessly with YoYo about something that was probably important but she couldn’t give a damn. She probably should have been listening but her mind was focused on you and how she could act like she could be friends with you without her feelings getting in the way. It had been a month since everything happened and Daisy has yet to say more than five words to you and she could see how it hurt you, especially on the recent mission. You and Daisy have been partners for as long as the inhuman could remember but on the last mission, Daisy made it a point to partner with Mack in another attempt to avoid you and she saw how it hurt you which made her heart sink to her stomach.

“Daisy, are you listening?” Mack’s voice snaps her out of her thoughts.

“Huh? Sorry, no.” She shakes her head, turning around in the chair. She looks at Mack, who was staring at her with concern. “What were you saying?”

“I asked if you were okay. You look out of it.” Daisy nibbles on her bottom lip, her stomach churning and her blood running cold.

The inhuman looks at the other agent and wonders if she should tell him what bothers her. He was her friend and would understand better than anyone what it was like to be in the framework and see a glimpse into a life with someone they loved. The circumstances were drastically different but still.

“Tremors?”

“I’m okay,” She decided not to tell him. Mack doesn’t look convinced but he didn’t pry. Daisy turned back to stare at the screens when a voice echoed through the room. Your voice.

“Daisy Johnson!”

Oh, God…

Daisy stood from the chair and went to rush the other way when she felt herself being pulled back by a gust of wind. No doubt your powers doing. “Okay, I have been patient and I have been kind while you recovered from whatever the hell went on in framework but I am out of both kindness and patience.” Daisy sees Mack and YoYo slip out of the room leaving her alone with you.

“Y/N…” She turns to face you.

“If you aren’t going to tell me what the hell is wrong with you or what I did to make you avoid me like I have the fucking plague then I do not want to hear it!” You snapped. “I don't want some bullshit excuse, Dais. I want to know why you won't talk to me or even look at me.”

Daisy’s eyes stayed trained on the floor until you spoke those last words and lifted them to look at you, her eyes lined with unshed tears. “It's nothing.”

“Why are you lying to me?” You take a step closer, your own tears forming. “What did I do to make you hate me?”

“I don't hate you. I just… Coming out of the framework… It's taking longer to adjust than what I thought.” Daisy explained. It wasn't exactly a lie but it wasn't the full truth either. She didn't know how to tell you and she was scared that if she did then she would lose you but she could see that she was already losing you.

You looked at her with tears in your eyes and a look on your face that made her stomach twist with guilt. “It didn't take anyone else this long.”

“We're all handling what happened to us in there differently because we experienced different things, Y/N! Mack had his daughter and she was ripped away from him again and he's not okay but he is putting up a strong front for everyone when he is not okay. May worked for Hydra and probably did some unspeakable things. Fitz was a leader of Hydra and did worse! He killed somebody, beat me, and shot Jemma and he still isn't okay. He still blames himself for everything. Coulson watched kids get taken away because they were like me and he couldn't do anything about it. Jemma dug herself out of a mass grave after taking over her dead body and then got shot by the evil version of the man she loves.” Daisy paused to wipe away the tears rolling down her cheeks. “Coulson and May watched Mace die saving kids in a building that May had blown up and they aren't okay. None of us are okay, Y/N, but we're handling it in our own ways.”

You stood there in shock, tears streaming down your face. You had yet to hear what actually happened in there and you couldn't believe it. “And you? What happened to you?”

Daisy screwed her eyes shut and threw her head back, letting out a deep breath she had been holding since she stopped talking. This was her chance. This was her chance to tell you how she felt and she hoped to a God she didn’t believe in that it didn’t backfire in her face.

“Me? What happened to me is that I woke up in a reality, expecting the worst possible thing, and it was horrible in there but… I had you. I had you there in my bed, in my shirt, and that smile I love so much on your face when you saw me. I had you telling me you loved me and kissing me and wearing a ring on your finger with wedding pictures on the dresser and lining the hallway. There was also Fitz and he beat me until I could barely breathe or stand but I didn’t even care about that because you were there. You showed up with May and dropped a crystal at my feet to give me my powers and you holding me after I broke through the mist. In there, I got to be with the woman I love but out here… out here I don’t. Out here, in reality, I have to deal with the fact that I cannot have you and it’s harder than looking at Fitz, which believe me is a hard thing to do. I love you and I can’t just be friends with you anymore because it is killing me. I’m avoiding you because my feelings for you are so strong they suffocate me. They’re drowning me and I don’t know how to stop it any other way.”

Staring at the inhuman, you felt your heart race against your chest as you took in her words. Out of everything Daisy could have said, you were not expecting that. You weren’t expecting her to tell you that she loved you and that despite everything that happened in the framework, you not being hers was worse. You weren’t expecting her to tell you that being friends with you was killing her because she loved you so much that it killed her.

“Daisy… I-”

“I know you only want to be friends, you made that clear but I can’t help the way I feel and I need time to figure it out because going into the framework and experiencing that only to come back to reality where I can’t have you is jarring. I may have been there for a short time but it felt so much longer and I found myself getting used to it when I shouldn’t have.” Daisy smiles sadly, her tears finally coming to an end and the crushing weight of keeping this from you lifted off her chest. “I’ll get over it sometime but I don't know when.”

You step closer. “What if I don't want you to get over it?”

Daisy feels her breath hitch. “Please, don’t. Don’t say something you don’t mean.”

You take another step and you’re so close to the inhuman you could leave forward an inch and touch your lips to hers. “I’m serious, Daisy. Don’t get over it because… I love you too. I only told you I wanted to be friends because I never thought that you could love me back but you do. You do love me which means I can do this.” You cradle her jaw in her hands and press your lips to hers, giggling at the muffled gasp that Daisy let out.

She didn’t push her lips against yours right away due to the shock but when she did, goosebumps littered her entire body. She lifted her hands to your wrists and held them to make sure you wouldn’t take them off her cheeks. When the need for air grew too strong, you pulled away but leaned your forehead against hers not wanting to go too far away and lose her warmth.

“Say it again,” Daisy mumbled, her eyes still closed, scared that if she opened them all this would fade away and be nothing but a dream.

“I love you. And I have for years.”

“Good because after that kiss, you’re stuck with me.” She let out a breathless chuckle, her smile widening and her eyes opening to meet yours. “I love you so much.”

“Finally!” A voice with a british accent exclaimed loudly causing you to break away and look at the source. “Fitz and Coulson owe me twenty bucks.” Jemma smiled and turned on her feet with a victorious smile on her face.

Coulson's face at Jemma when she's talking about her and Fitz's daughter, and May's face at Daisy when she's talking about her and Daniel's talk about having a baby, it just owns my heart.

I mean, before you come at me I know having kids it is not maybe the most important things in a women and men's life, but after all what they lived, after they went from being three kids (just like May once called them) to one of the strongest and smartest agents, after all the strange things that happened to them and the rollercoaster they lived the last 7 years, after all the happiness and sadness they went through, looking that they are going to live a better life that even they did, watching that they are having the opportunity that they never had in, maybe, the three person they love the most, watching them took that opportunity and that they are so happy makes me cry a lot, this looks literally screams PROUD PARENTS (AND GRANDPARENTS) OVER HERE

I know this has been said before but I just want to appreciate how this is the first time the whole team immediately got along with one of daisy's love interests (and shipped them even before they were a thing). I just love that so much

No one was particularly fond of miles...Coulson and may because she lied to them and fitz because of his little crush on daisy

Everyone eventually hated ward (and rightfully so because he was a hydra nazi bitch (stans/skyew*rd shippers DNI))

It took them a while to get with lincoln, as far as I remember they were a little apprehensive at first

But sousa...for sousa it didnt take them that long to make him part of the family...and I love that so much. This dorky square who called their bluff within their first interaction...they saved his life, made him a part of the team, made him a key part in their final mission, and they all just immediately got along with him SO WELL

Coulson had been fanboying from minute one and he gave his dad seal of approval ("that makes me happy too" 😊 it makes all of us happy phil)

Yeah sure jemma and sousa didnt have the greatest first interaction...but after their initial fallout he apologizes and I love their dynamic (the few seconds that we got, that is). Her making him a new prosthetic after he enters the ship?? That's the fitzsimmons way of saying welcome to the family. Like she knew he would stay. Her small smile when he decides to stay with them for daisy? Her knowing look after watching him and daisy interact?? The whole "they're your everything" scene??? Girl has always been captain of the ship (even with a scrambled memory)

And mack was just on a whole other level. He interacted with sousa for a whole of maybe 10 seconds and decided that yes we are going to save his life fuck the history books he's one of us now and I love that. Their dynamic may be one of my favourites in the whole show. And let's be honest..without him dousy would have remained pining and clueless idiots for a while. "I dont have any intentions""well then you better get some" As far as shovel talks go, this was one of the best ones out there. And his bet with yoyo? Amazing. Him preventing sousa from running of into the chronicom ship and getting himself killed because daisy will come back and when she does she will need her dork in one piece dammit? Incredible

I don't know what the terms of their bet was, but I will not even for a second believe that yoyo didnt ship them, okay? Because "dont worry too much about daisy"? Their mutual acknowledgement of the fact that they will never not worry about their SOs? She been knew

Even deke...with his what was an extremely childish (and borderline weird) crush on daisy and endless unrequited pining...he saw how happy daisy was around sousa, how crushed she was when she thought danny boy was going to stay behind...and so he took the bullet before she got hurt any further and I love him for it (seriously though deke had such incredible character growth this season it needs to be addressed more)

(Yeah we didnt really get much interaction from may and fitz..but the fact that may is an empath now would mean she knew something was up for a while (esp after the time loops 😏) and considering the fact that fitz saw the future through the time streams...he would have known for years)

(Also sousa writing the fitzsimmons fam letters! As if that isnt the cutest thing ever!)

And the super soft looks that the whole team had during their framework meeting when daisy was talking about sousa 🥺. They're so happy for her I'm so soft for this family

They really said dousy rights huh
