Ooh! Re: book recs for the new year, do you have any lesser known fantasy (or sci fi tbh) recommendations? Or better known but pre-2010s books - I've kind of devoured a lot of the modern stuff, and we have a shockingly similar taste in books
Ooh, excellent! I never actually know what's lesser known? So I'm going with things I haven't seen a lot of internet buzz about, with a decent amount of indie and self-pub. A lot of it will be fantasy romance, but I'll try for a variety!
The Devotion of Delflenor by R. Cooper (I'm going to keep trying until someone reads this piney piney lady knights book, damn it)
The Tea Princess Chronicles by Casey Blair
Salt Magic, Skin Magic by Lee Welch (a lot of people were talking about Seducing the Sorcerer by the same author a year or so ago, but I like this one better!)
Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and then if you like the concept behind that, try the Steerswoman books by Rosemary Kirstein
Ariah by B.R. Sanders is very worldbuildy and cool
Sharon Shinn flies under the radar sometimes but tends to have cool worldbuilding concepts, I'm midway through the Elemental Blessings series and really enjoying it
Felicia Davin's Gardener's Hand trilogy is great, and Davin now has a historical fantasy romance(/verging on erotica in places) epistolary series coming out, of which I've read the first, The Scandalous Letters of V and J is very fun.
I've only read the first of Effie Calvin's Ieflaria series of largely sapphic fantasy romance, but I had fun with that one!
I like Amy Rae Durreson, who usually writes m/m fantasy romance, try Reawakening on for size but be warned the second book has a plague in it
If you like middle grade, I really like Merrie Haskell's fairy tale retellings and her short stories for older readers too, she's very Robin McKinley-esque
(Speaking of, if you haven't read Robin McKinley, please do, any of her you can get your hands on but particularly her fairy tales and Chalice)
Three Princes by Ramona Wheeler is one I don't remember a lot about but the concept is great, it's the kind of alternate history I wish more people were writing instead of 18,000 "The Nazis/Confederates Won" books (and similarly, P. Djeli Clark's Dead Djinn books, though those have a much bigger dose of fantasy)
CJ Cherryh can sometimes be a bit dense for my mood, but I've read the first three books in her series that starts with Foreigner and there is SO much fun politics and worldbuilding. (I haven't read fantasy from her, just sci fi, sorry, almost posted this without making that clear, this is very much sci fi!)
Okay, that's what I've got for this exact second! I'm on a different floor from the bookshelf that has the most of my older fantasy on it, so there's not quite as much of that as intended, but it's what I've got in me!

drop your wlw fiction recs pls <3
I keep this list updated in a discord server I have for myself. I just took a second to update this with my recent reads, though not the one I'm currently reading.
I can attest to the quality of these. At minimum, something on this list is 4 out of 5 stars
Big ship at the edge of the universe - Alex White (fantasy Space opera, the whole trilogy is incredible)
Queen of Coin and Whispers - Helen Corcoran (medieval political intrigue)
This Is How You Lose The Time War - Amal El-Mohtar (SciFi I guess but mostly just romance)
Daughter Of The Sun (and the entire Tales Of Inthya series) - Effie Calvin (DND fantasy, usually Romance)
Sexiled - Ameko Kaeruda (goofy ass isekai style fantasy)
Deadly Education - Naomi Novik (traumatic dark fantasy magic school book)
Otherside Picnic - Iori Miyazawa (light novel cryptid horror series)
The Girl Who Drank The Moon - Kelly Barnhill (fairy tale) (not explicitly queer but highly recommended)
The Rise / Shadow of Kiyoshi - F. C. Yee (it's Avatar the last Airbender but you don't need to watch the show for it)
Of Fire And Stars - Audrey Coulthurst (royal fantasy romance) (the sequel is more tame with romance and focuses more on magic and drama)
The entire "a book of underrealm" series - Garrett Robinson (fantasy) (this is a publisher that was made to produce lgbt books)
The One Who Eats Monsters - Casey Matthews (modern fantasy cryptids romance)
Outlaw - Niamh Murphy (gay lady Robin Hood retelling)
Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller (regular (gay)
Achilles ancient Greek mythology retelling)
Three Parts Dead - Max Gladstone (dark fantasy) (there's like 7 of these)
The Mermaid's Daughter - Ann Claycomb (modern tragedy Fantasy romance. TW for very realistic presentation of trauma and chronic illness)
Meddling Kids - Edgar Cantero (Scooby Doo turns eldritch horror)
Gideon / Harrow / Nona the Ninth - Tamsy Muir (dark fantasy sci Fi) Harrow is the way gayest
Huntress - Malinda Lo (Eastern fantasy)
Making A Tinderbox - Emma Sterner-Radley (medieval fantasy romance)
This is Devin Jones - Kristen Conrad (cop thriller)
Gear Breakers - Zoe Hana Mikuta (pseudo apocalyptic with mechas, trans humanism)
We Lit The Dark On Fire - Tehlot Kay Mejia (spanish misogyny dystopia rebellion)
Crier's War - Nina Varela (Robot x Human slow burn magical dystopia rebellion)
The Witch Queen's Mate - Jennifer Carter (tribal warriors enemies to lovers)
Leviathan - Eric Schubach (sci Fi 10,000 year journey with magical creatures)
Carmilla & Laura - A D Simper (Carmilla retelling to be made properly gay)

things my best friend has said as marauders quotes
Sirius at James and Lily: don't breed. breed is bad.
Sirius: he (remus) would be a good stripper I think
James to Sirius: you're a hoe. but a lovely hoe
Barty: listen. I've cut open humans before and they have big breathing sacks-
Sirius about Regulus: he's a middle aged child
James explaining Sirius and Remus's relationship: they're besties...with benefits 😏
Peter: is there an ankle kink?
Regulus: because ALL ghosts just HAVE to be white don't they?
Evan, mispronouncing androgynous: yeah I feel a bit an-dro-gy-noose today
James: [sirius], please stop assaulting my pen
Evan: I'm a little German boy, I'm gonna get your toes with my little German boy fingers
Barty: give me the dead fetus, I have plans
Peter to Remus: do you have... a knee kink?
Marlene: I think the eggs for breakfast caused my period actually
Marlene: monkeys are the ancestors of cats
Barty, to Regulus: are you a keyboard? cos I'll play you like one
Sirius: I swear to [Merlin] I will sniff your arse
Sirius to Remus: can I unwrap you like a Christmas present?
Marlene: step-mummy please😩
Remus: no one likes a dog that vibrates [padfoot]
Mary: if a bee hit it from the back would it die before it could orgasm?
Peter: I think I could top a spoon
James to Lily: im not wearing anything under this mirror👀
Barty about Regulus: evil dick, giant brain
Sirius: haha [marlene] ate dick
Marlene: BOOBIES? WHERE
Lily, after a marauders prank: I could write a sixteen page essay on how much I wish I were a lesbian
Sirius when Remus walks in: hello sexy male
Sirius: a secret, third thing, my deep ass cheeks
Remus: Lma-no.
Remus: stop saying thick-arse rim!
Marlene, drunk: horse shoes don't go on horse cock, that's why they're horse shoes not horse condoms
Barty, about Regulus: I'd let him punch me for free, but you got PAID?
Sirius: [Regulus!] you devious little dog!
James: I can confirm, [Marlene] and my mum did not have sex to make me
Sirius: someone cummed in a glue bottle, that's why it's so hard
James, panicking to Pomfrey: MY JUGULAR IS JIGGLUNG
Remus: mate stop fingering the biscuit
James: I don't want your drug pens!
James at Marlene: stop underlining your nipple
Sirius: haha there's a man on your tit
James: my mum is not a man! nor a football!
Sirius: [Dumbledore] is a BOTTOM everyone
Barty: I'd be the one DOING the fucking, not getting fucked
Regulus: can I refer to you as a travelling circus?
Barty, in response to ^: well I am a walking joke
Sirius: if you're homophobic you get sent to bitch jail
James: I'm just too quirky for my own good
Sirius: does that mean pussy is dogwater
Sirius when Remus gets rid of his trousers: how much are you selling your arse fabric for?
Remus: I dare you to drink the bananas cum
Lily: I don't want to hold hands with Jesus, put him back on his cross
Sirius, after losing his virginity: I started celebrating because I got to touch arse
Remus: christ no I don't want to touch God's nuts
James when Remus gives him anything: thanks. it doesn't have weed on it, right?
Sirius: I'm like a bird hi-YAH oh shit I pulled a muscle
Remus: the wake up woman touched my penis
James: please stop serenading my father
Marlene: whore core?? I think you mean me when women
Sirius and Regulus about slow walkers: you know what career they can pursue? ROADBLOCKS
James: be careful. I'll beat you up with my Calvin Klein man muscles
James: im clutching my house keys
Effie, about Sirius: I saw him and I knew immediately I should put him in my child jar
Sirius after drinking water: im gonna break records with how much I piss today
Evan, seeing Sirius from afar: is that Jesus christ? why is he so white? absolutely translucent
Barty, holding Regulus's diary: I think this may be a gay sex book
baby James: what do you do? I'm a snot picker
Sirius: thaddeus with the phatteus
Sirius about Regulus: stop babygirl-ifying him! he is not babygirl material! I am :(

James: oh, you did competitive ballet when you were young? my parents loved me so I can't relate
James, trying to help Remus and Sirius get together: do you like balls bursting in your mouth?
Barty: stop playing with balls in your mouth
James, watching Regulus, Evan and Barty walk into the toilets: three men just walked into the loo, they might kiss~
Remus, trying to find a body wash: does this smell like weiner or hydrangea
Sirius when McGonagall: turn your bagpipes off for [Merlin's] sake
Evan: thumb me bitch
Sirius to Marlene: you already knew you liked women! you were in her boohs!

Hi, Garrett! Hey, just letting you know I referenced you in the Forward to my (hopefully!) upcoming novel, The First Empress. The sentence in question reads, "One of the best things I learned from reading Effie Calvin and Garrett Robinson’s novels is that truly excellent and inclusive stories with engaging characters, world-building, and conflicts can be created without some need to incorporate real-world prejudices." Just wanted you to know that your stories have been an important influence on my writing, and I appreciate your work and effort!
Currently I'm looking into publishers and literary agents to find a home for my novel. Any advice on finding and appealing to agents and/or publishers? Thanks and take care!
Oh man oh jeez oh wow, that is really like the kindest thing. Seriously, thank you. That means the world to me. Please tell me when I can get your book, I want to read it!
As for publishers and agents, my experience is limited. Almost all my books are independently published, except for the most recent one. And the publishing deal on that one came because an old writer friend of mine was working for the publisher and called me.
That honestly might be the best answer I can give. Get out there, speak to people, make friendships and relationships. It's just networking. And I'm abysmally bad at networking, I just happened to have this one friend who led to a great opportunity.
The other advice I'd give is that even if traditional publishing doesn't work out, there's always going indie. It's a lot of work, but so is traditional—just a different kind of work. Regardless of how it makes its way to the world, just based off knowing you on tumblr, I suspect your book is going to be damn good and something the world needs and wants.

Shortly after the funeral, Eugene went to his father for some advice and help. The news of late had not been good and he wanted to secure his future any way he could. First his cousin, Josephine, had succumbed to her illness. Instead of the whole family taking time off from school and their responsibilities, only Effie had gone to pay her respects. Then Goldie's father suddenly passed. He'd choked on a sandwich whilst laughing at a joke! Eugene didn't want to seem like he was taking advantage of the situation, but with 2 unmarried daughters and a young son still at home, Mrs. Hughes was going to have her hands full. "Father, I would like for you to begin speaking to Mrs. Hughes about Goldie's hand in marriage. We have corresponded since my first year at university and I want to make her my wife."
"Well, I'll be... that's wonderful news, son. I can speak to the widow on your behalf, but I might be dealing with her eldest boy, Calvin. I don't know how they're working the family dealings, but I'll see what I can do."
Just before the end of his 2nd term, Eugene received notice from his father that the betrothal was ready to proceed forward as long as Goldie agreed. Eugene swiped his hand through his hair. He was going to have to ask her after all. He sighed to himself. "Why couldn't he have just secured her hand without her agreement? I like her well enough and she seems to like me, that is going to have to be enough. I'm not going to lose myself in anyone. It hurts to damn much to get that close. I suppose I'll just have to get her to say yes. A politician can't be unmarried. Voters won't trust a man without a wife. I want children as well. They'll grow up knowing both of their parents from day one, but they need to understand that emotions make things complicated and it's best just to leave them at the door."

You should read Effie Calvin's tales of iflaria.
Book one is a story about a lesbian arranhed marriage between princesses and one has ADHD and it's really good.
Premise: princess isofie arrives in iflaria to marry the prince but turns out he's dead so now she gotta marry the princess, she's fine with that but the other princess has Selfworth issues because of her lifelong struggle with adhd.
Also there's a looming dragon threat.
ooooo i think i have the first book already! i’ll need to check it out soon 👀
