"I just don't understand how you can stare out at all that beauty all the time. Like, yes, it is beautiful, but don't you ever get tired of just how beautiful it is?" Elliot laughed at Heather's ridiculous complaint.
"Are you sure you're even human? Who doesn't love a beautiful vista? Elliot lounged back against the sofa as Heather started to doze. "I get it though. Just once I'd like to see a big 'ole giant Cypress and some low-hanging Spanish moss, but I'm definitely not going to see that here." Elliot fidgeted with the carpet fibers for a bit. "Hey, I wanted to ask you something. Something...er...I...um... I wanted to ask you something."
Heather drowsily murmured something, but rolled onto her side and looked at him. Elliot played with her fingers as he gathered her thoughts. That was something she noticed about him. He couldn't sit still. He had to be fiddling or doing something with his hands or fingers. "So my contract at work ended."
"I thought you still had a few months!"
"I thought I did too, but I had the conversation earlier this week with them and I guess they don't need me anymore."
"Do you want to move in with me? Seems like the universe is trying to tell us something by having this align with us." Heather interrupted him before she thought the better of it, but once it was out it was out. Elliot smiled at her and booped her on the nose.
"You are adorably impatient. I was going to ask you the same thing. Well, I was going to ask if you'd take in your poor jobless, soon-to-be homeless boyfriend, but your way was way better."

Elliot came up to Oasis Springs three weeks later. Thank goodness their long-distance plans were good, because the number of minutes the two of them spent on the phone was impressive, but talking on the phone was nothing compared to actually being together. After grabbing some lunch from the restaurant behind Heather's apartment, the pair toured the original town square. As they came upon a small gazebo, Elliot stopped.
Heather looked at him questioningly but didn't say anything. She had spent the whole day trying to get him to kiss her, but she didn't know how to make that happen and she really wanted him to kiss her. She'd never felt this way about anyone and now that she had she wanted more of it. Finally, she spoke, "Hey, is everything alright?" He ruffled his hand through his hair. She grabbed his hand as he brought it back down. "Elliot?" He moved to move a strand of hair out of her face, and as she looked up into his face, she wrapped her arms around him and pulled his face down to hers. The kiss was tender and timid at first, but then Heather surprised even herself when she hopped up and wrapped her legs around Elliot's waist and deepened the kiss.
When they finally parted, Heather was flushed but excited. Elliot spoke first. "I've been wanting to do that all day."

Where should I even begin to look for him? Heather started off towards the park and stables where she'd met Elliot the first time. Lady Luck must've been with her because she watched him walk out of the barn and stretch. "Elliot?" She called out almost timidly. He turned toward her and waved. He didn't smile, but a wave was friendly, right? "Can we talk? I feel like I need to apologize for last night. Is there a spot we could speak in private if that's ok?"
He nodded and beckoned her to follow him. He took her to an upstairs balcony that was empty. They sat on the bench and Heather fumbled for the right words. Luck was with her again when Elliot took the lead. "Look, I don't know what that was all about last night but clearly you guys have some history. I'm not looking to get caught up in some drama, but I did enjoy my time with you." In his gesturing, while speaking his hand hit hers and it was like an electric spark. Heather felt it so keenly that she glanced at their hands. Her reaction to the touch paused Elliot's speech. Heather took the opportunity to explain herself.
"You're right, we do have history. He's my father, but more like he's a sperm donor. He wasn't, and isn't, involved in my life at all. He left my mom when she was still pregnant with me and never looked back. The times he has tried to come back and stake some paternal claim, it has always been because he needs something. None of this is an excuse. The way I behaved was not normal. I don't start arguments. I certainly don't do it in public, but for some reason seeing him last night just set me off. I really enjoyed my time with you, as well, and I think maybe we could be something but I get it if you don't want to." The words tumbled out of Heather's mouth before she could edit what she was going to say, but pausing now she could feel the warmth of Elliot as he playfully shouldered her.
"You know, I didn't know what to think last night, but now it makes more sense. Terrell is an ass and the whole town knows it. He thinks he's better than everyone else, but he's not. Clearly, your mom is a rockstar because I think we could be something too. She did a good job with you." A mischievous twinkle came into Elliot's eye as he continued, "So if you think you want to explore what's between us then you wouldn't mind if I pull a move like this..." And with that, he melodramatically put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her in close. Heather couldn't help but giggle. This man was a weird combination of goofy and serious and she was enthralled.

Heather had a terrible time falling asleep after the drama with her father, which is how she found herself at the cafe a good hour before she and Adrian had agreed to meet. Heather sipped her latte and stewed about the events of the night before. She was in a state when Adrian finally came through the door. Heather didn't even let the poor woman sit down before she launched into the drama of the night before.
Adrian listened and offered what advice she could, but as the pair left the cafe and began to part ways Adrian turned towards Heather and offered one last piece of advice. "If you really like this guy, then I think you should try and find him before you leave to make amends. I've known you a long time and I've never seen you this upset over a guy - so either it's just the bloom of a first crush or it's something more. You're never gonna know unless you talk to him again." Heather turned in shock towards her friend ready to denounce any soft feelings towards Elliot, but as she began to argue she realized that Adrian was right.
"Ugh! As much as I want to argue with you and tell you that you're wrong, you're not. Talking with Elliot last night was amazing and the butterflies in my stomach were unpleasant yet exhilarating all at the same time. It was kind of awful. I want to feel it again, but I'm so embarrassed. What would I even say to him to explain my behavior?"
"The truth? We've all got families and families come with drama. I'm sure he's got some experiences of his own. Besides, if that doesn't work and he's a jerk then you didn't waste that much time, but what if he's not a jerk?" Adrian threw her arm over Heather's shoulder and pulled her into a big hug. "I'm going to miss you. We should do this again. It was fun."
"It was a lot of fun. Thank you for setting this up and being you," Heather choked into Adrian's shoulder, "I'm going to find Elliot before I leave. I'll let you know how it goes."

Elliot found a seat as Heather went to freshen up. An older gentleman sat next to him. "What are your intentions with my daughter, handyman?" Elliot turned towards the man in dumbfounded confusion. Heather sat down opposite the gent before he could respond. She looked like hell frozen over. The frosty gaze that accompanied the scowl on her face told Elliot that this was no chance meeting. Startled, the older gent turned towards Heather with an affected shrug of innocence, but Heather was undeterred.
"What do you want Terrell? What are you even doing here?"
"I do not care for your tone, young lady. You're my daughter and it's my business with whom you socialize. I don't want you dragging my family's good name through the mud."
"I may be your daughter, but you are not my father. Ken was more of a father figure than you could ever hope to be, and I don't have your name. I have Mom's name and thank goodness too! I wouldn't want to be associated with the likes of you."
"You watch your tone. You are here because of me. You are nothing but an exact replica of your mother."
"Hey. I don't know the history here, but you are out of line." Elliot's interjection was ignored, so he exited the situation. He did not need to be part of that drama.
Heather noticed Elliot's departure and that fueled her rage. This man was nothing more than a sperm donor and came into her life when he needed something. She was not his puppet and she was not beholden to him for anything. Everything she was, was because of her mother and her family, and was damned if she was going to let Terrell drag her through the mud. "You're right. I am who and what I am because of my mother and her family. They raised me, taught me, and supported me. They did everything that you didn't because they stayed. They took responsibility for their actions and they loved me despite me being your daughter!" Terrell stood in a huff and stalked out of the bar. People actually clapped and cheered. Heather was offered a drink on the house, but after that one drink, she left the bar alone.

Heather got to the bar a few minutes before Adrian, so she ordered herself a nice chilled, light white wine. Heather reflected that she really enjoyed this respite as Adrian came up behind her. Apparently, a crowd had followed Adrian as the area quickly filled up. Adrian moved off to the dance floor, and a familiar face slid into the seat she had occupied.
"Hey, mind if I take this seat? It's Heather, right?" Heather turned to see the handsome, shirtless man from the equestrian center earlier. Only he wasn't shirtless now but he was still just as handsome.
Heather stammered, "Uh... yeah... yes, it's free. It's nice to see you again. Elliot, right? Despite her profession, Heather was uneasy talking to strangers about anything of substance, but Elliot was easy to talk to and the two hit it off. Heather discovered that he was a handyman type, but he really loved woodworking. Originally from New Orleans, he loved the simple life he'd created for himself in Chestnut Ridge, but he missed the charm of New Orleans.
Adrian stayed close enough to monitor Heather, but she was proud that her friend was talking to someone outside of her circle. She loved Heather, but no one could claim that Heather was an extrovert. Sure, she put on a good show but interacting with people could be draining for her friend. Adrian smiled as she saw Heather become more relaxed. Adrian smiled to herself as she heard Heather flirting with the handsome local. Adrian quietly disappeared as the pair moved to the dance floor. She couldn't wait to hear everything tomorrow. Breakfast could not come soon enough!

The friends couldn't have asked for better weather for their little escape. The plan was to meet downtown and then head out in one of their cars to their line dancing class. Heather had started to worry that she and Adrian weren't going to get on as they once had. They'd been friends forever, but Heather hadn't actually seen her friend in some time. The last time Heather had seen her was at Adrian's wedding. They'd had a blast, but Heather didn't much care for Adrian's husband. He was fine, but Heather felt like Adrian had settled. None of that mattered as soon as Heather saw Adrian she ran up and enveloped her in a huge bear hug.
"It's definitely been too long!"
"I'm so glad you called! It's definitely been too long!"
The friends headed off for the first part of their adventure. Dancing had always been one of Heather's favorite activities and as she sashayed around the dance floor she remembered all the fun she used to have before she moved out on her own. There was a picnic lunch after the class, but Heather spied a water balloon tub and decided some childish fun was called for. Adrian was more than happy to oblige. Neither one was very good at throwing the but the laughs they shared more than made up for their lack of skill. They wandered towards the equestrian center where Heather was keen to talk to everyone, while Adrian was distracted with all the horses. They agreed to meet up at the bar later that evening.

"You're almost 25. When was the last time you took a vacation? Hell, when was the last time you hung out with me?" Adrian was never one to pull any punches, but Heather was glad to have been able to reconnect with her childhood friend.
"I know you're right, but it just never seems like the right time. I've got the shop and who would run it if I'm not here?"
"You're not chained to it. I already booked some stuff. It's just one night and Chestnut Ridge isn't very far from you. You could drive out and hang out with me." Adrian was pleading now, and the idea of a night away did sound wonderful.
"Ok. I'm in!"

Moira's luck did not improve much, but as she descended what she hoped was the end of her quest in the temple she couldn't help but feel sad. Her trip was coming to a close and she couldn't help but feel like she should spend more time here. There was so much for her still to learn!

Wandering from the baths, Moira found herself in yet another area. The sun was fully set now and the moon was high in the sky. Moira knew she should head back to town, but she just wanted a quick look. She surveyed the area for a possible dig site but came up empty; she did find a chest with some loot in it though!
