“Darling. I need you to breathe for me.” Yellow spirals consume Jade’s beautiful eyes. Soft pulses of light. Tender. Gentle. Warm olive and sunshine gold—a breath of fresh air fills your lungs like a summer breeze. One…. Two. “Good,” he presses a soft kiss to your forehead. “Keep looking into my eyes, Darling. I’m going to make you feel better…. Trust me. Let go….”

It’s easy to surrender to Jade’s gentle voice. Trust makes you melt. And it’s not as if you’re unconscious, or even unaware. But more… sinking into your lover’s signature magic. Shock the Heart wraps around you like a cloud of comfort, fogging your senses and filling you with this serene calm.

A velvet-clad thumb strokes over your cheek, as Jade leans closer. He tugs one glove off with his teeth, then the other. You gulp for breaths in the palm of his hand. And slowly…. Your dizziness fades….

“Good…. So good for me, my dear,” he sighs in relief. The praise lights like sparks in your gut. Butterflies flap drunkenly in your chest. A silly, tiny flush replaces that sickly panic-pale. His lips find your cheek, stamping softly beneath your eye. His tongue darts out, dabs a tear away. “...Answer me truthfully, my Love—”

“M… Mhm….” You nod, hazily. The sweet, if abrupt, confirmation makes Jade laugh a little.

“...Will you be alright if I take you somewhere quieter to calm down?”

“ ’s long as it’s with you….” Barely, you slur the words out. He lets out a pleased rumble as he steals a small, chaste kiss.

“May I pick you up?”

“Mhmn….”

“Do you need to go to sleep, Dear?”

“Don’t wanna….”

“Alright.” Before you know it, you’re settled into his bed. The faint scent of earth perfumes from his terrariums. He nuzzles in with you, curls around you in such careful constriction. The spell drops. The room goes dark.

And even despite your ‘wants’, you soon start to snooze against Jade’s chest.

Storm Spell to Ease Your Grief

You’ll Need:

An empty bowl

A black glass bottle

In parts of Scotland, this time of year is associated with a legendary figure known as the Cailleach. she brings storms and destruction, but in her wake, life and hope always return. If you are grieving for someone* or something that is no longer in your life, use the energy of an October storm to help you move on.

Place the bowl outside on a stormy night to gather rainwater. In the morning, pour the water into the bottle and take it to a place that reminds you of the person for whom you mourn. Hold the bottle close to your heart, and say “[NAME], you are absent but always remembered, you are mourned but always loved, you are gone but always honored.”

Pour the water in a circle around you, working in a clockwise direction, saying “I will remember you, I will love you, I will honor you. To do these things, I will allow myself to move forward and live again.”

When you have finished, take a moment to say goodbye, and return home.

I have things to say about white privilege and how that shouldn’t be discounted when changing white characters in canon to POC, but I’m having an old fashioned and have to stay up until 3 AM to see a person leave for the airport so you get drunk and sleep deprived thoughts from me.

So making Louis black worries me because Louis in canon is white and privileged. That privilege informs so much of his view of the world, of how the world interacts with him. Louis de Pointe du Lac is a slave owner, and he is accustomed to owning people. Is that not an essential part of his character? That he thinks owning other people, no matter how, is okay? When he is turned by Lestat he thinks he is superior to Lestat because he is used to being the boss. Being the slave-owner and being in charge. Will Louis the brothel owner be that way? Not in the same way. Sex work that isn’t forced is very different from forced labor.

I’ve often thought about if Rose could be POC but I always say ‘NO!’. Rose comes from a place of extreme privilege. She is never shunned from society because of the color of her skin or how she behaves compared to her white peers. Her issues come from other problems in her life that have nothing to do with her skin tone. And it’s so unfortunate that skin tone matters in this day and fucking age, but it does.

The Vampire Chronicles are different from recent fantasy adaptations. House of the Dragon and Rings of Power have both received some backlash for casting black actors in canon ‘white’ roles. I put ‘white’ here in quotes because the A Song of Ice and Fire AND The Lord of the Rings universes both take place in worlds different from our own. They are not on Earth, and therefore adding diversity, while receiving some backlash, is generally accepted by the mass population once the series begin.

Of course we have about a week before we all have Interview With the Vampire (2022) in our hands. But the reason The Vampire Chronicles is different is because it takes place in ‘our world’. Again, I use quotes because it is clearly an alternate universe of our current world. It is what makes VC so appealing as a book series. The idea that vampires could be lurking among us right now is enticing to anyone, much less the teenagers that mostly read the series for the first time. I remember being 14 and thinking Lestat was going to come to my bedroom window and take me away from my ‘boring’ life. The Vampire Chronicles take place in ‘our world’, warts and all. That means all of the racism and homophobia and vile hatred in our world, is in the VC world, because in canon, they are meant to be one and the same.

I’m a fucking woman of color, and I hate some people thinking I’m a fucking racist because I’m fucking worried about changing the race of a beloved character to suit modern appetites. Do I want more representation of my race? Ab-so-fucking-lutely. But I don’t want it at the expense of losing what makes existing canon characters work on the page.

Will the KHTTRPG be D&D 5E compatible? Asking so I can know if I'll be able to use it on Roll20, given the website can be a little less than friendly with custom rules at times.

KHTTRPG is a totally standalone system, with different rules for combat and a different set of core stats. However, I could definitely see myself converting a portion of it into a 5e module one day, if people were interested! Unfortunately, it may have to stay a pen-and-paper RPG for now, even though it's released online ):
