The sun is kissing the earth goodbye and the buzz of the city is settling into a soft hum. You’ve been back a total of five days, four of which you spent unpacking and gushing to your roommate about your experience. You decided that the fifth day would be one of leisure and indulgence, so here you stood, pulling the door open to your favorite cafe.

A few chairs have been replaced and new desserts sit in the display case, but the comfort that comes with familiarity still squeezes you tight like a mother who misses her children. Even though there were things you were running from, this place and its amazing strawberry shortcake was never one of them.

You rock on your heels as you stare at the expanse of the man’s back in front of you, the black compression shirt highlighting every single one of his muscles and slim waist. You watch him point at the display case and his voice comes out velvety smooth and familiar.

Heart-wrenching familiarity.

“Two slices of the strawberry shortcake, please.”

Everything except your heart is frozen, which aches as it pounds in your chest. It echoes in your ears, drowning out the sounds of the cafe.

You don’t even care that he’s bought the last of the dessert, you don’t care that if his hair was out of the confines of the beanie, you would’ve turned around at the door.

And you’re trying not to care about how much you missed him.

But then he’s turning around, eyes meeting yours and his expression is like looking in a mirror. And your name tumbles from his lips, so softly, so sweetly.

Almost as if nothing had ever changed.

Like nothing ever went wrong and your hearts were never broken.

All you can do is stare at your reflection in his sunglasses; you can’t see his eyes and it’s slowly killing you from the inside. You want to know if they’re swirling with similar emotions.

You want to know if seeing you hurts as much as seeing him.

“Excuse me. Could the two of you move to a table, please? It’s hard for the other guests to walk up to register.”

“Sorry.” You both say with an apologetic bow. And embarrassment moves you to sit at the nearest table.

And that’s how you end up with a free slice of strawberry shortcake and a hot tea. The things you were coming for, of course.

WHAT IS THE "SUN GODDESS" PARTICLE??

Over the years, scientists have managed to unveil the existence of quite a few intriguing particles, pushing the entire field of physics forward with each discovery. There's the "God Particle" for instance, aka the Higgs Boson that grants all other particles their masses. There's also the so-called "Oh My God!" particle, an unimaginably energetic cosmic ray.

named the "sun goddess" particle — and is fittingly extraordinary.

This particle has an energy level one million times greater than what can be generated in even humanity’s most powerful particle accelerators; it appears to have fallen to Earth in a shower of other, less energetic particles. Like the "Oh My God!" particle, these bits come from faraway regions of space and are known as cosmic rays. The particle has been dubbed "Amaterasu" after Amaterasu Ōmikami, the goddess of the sun and the universe in Japanese mythology, whose name means "shining in heaven."

And just as its mythological namesake is shrouded in mystery, so too is the Amaterasu particle.

Its discoverers, including Osaka Metropolitan University researcher Toshihiro Fujii, don’t know where the particle came from or indeed what it is. They also still aren't sure what kind of violent and powerful process could have given rise to something as energetic as Amaterasu.

"This is the most energetic charged particle ever detected by the Telescope Array experiment," Fujii told Space.com.

The hope is that, just as Amaterasu is credited with the creation of Japan according to the Shinto tradition, the Amaterasu particle can help create an entirely new branch of high-energy astrophysics.

High-energy cosmic rays are extremely rare to begin with, but Fujii said the Amaterasu particle has an energy level not seen in a staggering 30 years of cosmic ray detections.

In fact, when the researchers spotted Amaterasu with the Telescope Array experiment — involving 507 detectors spread across 270 square miles (699 square kilometers) of the high desert of Millard County, Utah —they initially thought the detection must be some kind of mistake.

"I thought it would be my mistake or bug, and then after checking the details of the event, I was excited to find it was not an error," Fujii said.

First spotted by the Telescope Array experiment on May 27, 2021, the Amaterasu particle exhibits an energy of 224 exa-electron volts (EeV). For contest, one EeV is equivalent to 10¹⁸ electron volts. This puts Amaterasu on a similar energy level to the most energetic cosmic ray ever discovered — yes, that's the "Oh My God!" particle, which was detected in Oct. 1991 by the Fly’s Eye camera in Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. The latter had an energy of 320 EeV.

"The Amaterasu particle should be an important messenger from the universe about extremely energetic phenomena, but we need to disentangle the origin of this mysterious particle," Fujii explained.

There isn’t an astrophysical object, or any cosmic event for that matter, in the direction from which the sun goddess particle appears to have come from. That's why scientists are pretty unclear on what led to its creation.

But, while the origins of the Amaterasu particle may be currently unknown, Fujii does have some avenues of investigation to follow up on. Importantly, some of these ideas could extend beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, which is the best outline we have of the universe’s particle zoo and how each of those particles interact with one another.

why do people still spread around that yellow is a gl’s weakness if it hasn’t been for like… a while according to some gl fans

Is there a comic that i missed? is it just a weakness that hasn’t been remembered in a while?

Tldr: The yellow weakness has not existed since the establishment of Kyle Rayner as the singular Green Lantern back in 1994.

A brief history of the Green Lantern ring’s yellow weakness

The yellow weakness was introduced in the same issue as Hal: Showcase #22. According to Abin Sur, the former Green Lantern of sector 2814, “once you have the battery you will have power over everything–except what is yellow!” From this point onward, Green Lantern comics would not let you forget this fact with almost every issue saying some variation of “Editor’s note: due to a necessary impurity, Green Lantern’s ring is powerless over anything yellow!” This explanation is similar to one presented in Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn (1990), the post-crisis rewrite of Hal Jordan’s origin with one major change, discussed below.

While Green Lanterns cannot directly affect anything made of yellow (or surrounded by “an invisible yellow aura” such as the Shark), their constructs can indirectly affect yellow objects. For example, Hal would not be able to make a baseball bat to bat away a yellow cloud, but he would be able to make a fan to blow away the yellow cloud. In addition, because yellow is based on how it appears, various tricks are used to make yellow into green.

The yellow weakness is treated as a necessary and essential aspect of Green Lantern lore, and thus not questioned, until the psychodrama arc in Green Lantern (1960) #166 - 170. At this point in the timeline, Hal is well into his “space exile” arc, i.e. the time that the Guardians forbid him from returning to Earth for a year after he put his home life above his responsibilities as Green Lantern. The psychodrama was a way of testing Hal’s loyalty after Myrwhydden, a wizard trapped in Hal’s power ring, put him in a trance like state (Green Lantern (1960) #164). In this “psychodrama”, a rookie Green Lantern dies because her ring is unable to work against yellow. This, in addition to Green Lanterns learning that the Guardians had rings that could work against yellow and was withholding them for an unknown reason, caused several Green Lanterns to rebel against the Guardians. Hal is immediately against these rebel Green Lanterns -showing his utter devotion to the Guardians at this point. Eventually, the rings without a yellow weakness are revealed to make their users evil, and Hal proves his devotion to the Guardians, allowing him to exit the psychodrama. While the exact details are not necessary in this discussion, this is the first time that the yellow weakness is treated as not something completely necessary and more like a conscious choice on the side of the Guardians.

The yellow weakness especially became important at the end of Englehart’s Green Lantern Corps run (Green Lantern (1960) #201-224). At this point, the Green Lanterns agreed to execute Sinestro for genocide, but as they executed him, we learn that a billion years before the Guardians had made a pact that no Guardian or agent of the Guardians (aka the Green Lantern Corps) could murder a male Korugarian without the yellow impurity taking control of the Central Power Battery, causing the destruction of the Green Lantern rings, Oa, and eventually, the Universe itself. When the Green Lanterns execute Sinestro, the Green Lantern power battery almost becomes a black hole that would suck in the whole universe as the yellow impurity takes it over, but Hal Jordan enters the power battery and stops it from exploding.

Now, as I said earlier, in the mid 80s, there began to be question about the true essential nature of the yellow impurity, and this question became full on disbelief in the late 80s/early 90s. In Secret Origins (1986) #36, Hal says, “My ring has a built-in impurity—it won’t function on anything made of yellow! I suppose it’s a safeguard against any one Green Lantern becoming too powerful!” Hal very explicitly believes the yellow weakness was added to stop Green Lanterns from becoming too powerful and this is backed up by the events within the psychodrama and the flashback scenes in Green Lantern (1990) #19. In this issue, we see a flashback to a former Green Lantern of Sector 2814, a Green Lantern with no weakness at all-not to yellow like the corps, not to wood like Alan- who eventually went power-hungry. At this point, we see the wood weakness added to his ring, as the Guardians had already removed the yellow weakness as he was the Greatest Green Lantern of that time.

In the end of 1993/beginning of 1994, Emerald Twilight was published. This story made Hal a living conduit of the ring energy and established Kyle Rayner as the last Green Lantern. The idea that the Guardians added the yellow weakness is the implicit subtext within Kyle Rayner’s run. From issue 51 onward, we see Kyle’s ring is different from the former Green Lantern rings; it has no 24 hour limit, it does not automatically protect the user, and most importantly for this discussion, it does not have a weakness to yellow.

There are a few different theories for why, in universe, this change happened. The most well-support theories are that

A.) Ganthet removed the yellow weakness while reforming the ring, so that the new user would have a chance against Hal.

B.) The Parallax entity leaving the central power battery, and taking root within Hal, caused the necessary impurity to no longer be necessary.

However, the actual reason for the change in universe does not change the fact that the yellow weakness was not necessary, it was imputed as a form of control, and it caused people to die. The yellow weakness has not existed since 1994, outside of flashbacks, but it is still an interesting aspect of Green Lantern history when not reduced to banana jokes.

The reason people still bring it up is because no one reads Green Lantern comics but Green Lantern fans.

[Return of Ultraman is the third Ultraman series, the fourth in the Ultra series altogether, and the first that establishes any sort of continuity between one-off cameos. If the original Ultraman is the toku version of Green Lantern (space cop gives power to human fighter pilot), Ultraman Jack is the toku Spider-man before the actual toku Spider-Man. Hideki Go is thrilled to get powers and rapidly goes too far with them, and has to learn that with great power comes great responsibility. Plus, the series has as much of a focus on his home life as it does on his monster-fighting antics, and Ultraman Jack often loses fights and has to regroup and rethink his approach before winning.

Arstron here (referred to as Earthtron in English before Tsubaraya made official Romanizations for their many many kaiju) was the first kaijur that Ultraman Jack fought, and it's one of his most iconic opponents. Arstron has reappeared in multiple Ultra Series, has a lot of toys, and even appears in the opening credits of the next series, Ultraman Ace. Not bad for most transparent Godzilla knockoff of the franchise not actually made from an old Godzilla costume.]

Arstron CR 21 CN Magical Beast This creature resembles an oversized, slightly humanoid dinosaur, its arms short and legs massive. Rows of low plates grow along its spine, and it has a huge crescent horn growing from its forehead.

An arstron is an enormous burrowing predator that superficially resembles a theropod dinosaur. They spend most of their lives underground, hunting other large subterranean creatures like purple worms and supplementing their diet with organic minerals like coal and oil. Arstrons are territorial and belligerent, and the movement of dragons, kaiju or other enormous and powerful monsters through their territories may provoke them to go on violent rampages. Arstrons enjoy combat, and their rare interactions with other members of their species are typically sparring matches.

Arstrons care little for stealth, and they are pursuit hunters rather than ambush predators. Their burrowing is often felt in the form of small tremors before the monsters emerge to the surface. Arstrons prefer to use their breath weapons and spit fireballs in order to hunt—animals, monsters and humanoids killed by the flames are eaten carbonized, and arstrons typically char their food before consuming it. They use their teeth, claws, tails and scything horn primarily when fighting an enemy that is fire resistant and/or large enough to fight back. An arstron can launch itself into a frenzy similar to a barbarian’s rage, and if anything survives that onslaught, the arstron is likely to burrow back below ground and try to flee.

daily reminder day 222: eddie k-tozier is alive and well and right now he’s making up his and richie’s bed. there’s a method to his madness, the bed always has to be made a particular way which is why eddie’s always the one to do it. richie is quick to throw the blankets and pillows on the bed where they’re still very much wrinkled and out of place; it drives eddie INSANE. he’s almost done with it now, propping and fluffing up the pillows against their headboard neatly. that is until suddenly he’s being picked up from behind with strong arms and the smell of Old Spice with a mix of musk filling his senses, yelping and kicking wildly in the process. eddie knows who it is and knows what’s about to happen next, and because of that he begins yelling “richie no! the bed!! i just made the be- !!!” but before he can get it all out, richie is already tossing eddie onto the bed with a laugh, the force of him hitting the bed wrinkling their comforter and making the pillows scatter and fall to the floor. and before eddie can bitch and complain, richie climbs on the bed and kisses eddie a little silly. they stay like that for a while, languidly kissing and eddie letting himself get distracted. but richie’s not off the hook yet, eddie’s gonna let him HAVE IT when he finally remembers how they ended up kissing on the bed in the first place.

daily reminder day 228: eddie k-tozier is alive and well and right now he’s trying to steal richie’s glasses as they play fight. once he gets them he laughs in richie’s face and puts them on and tries to run away, only to end up yelping and falling on his face. it was then that he realized that richie wasn’t exaggerating about his eye sight and now eddie cant see either. needless to say he’s learned his lesson.

Erotophobia And the Colonization of Queers/Nature

“The rhetoric and institution of Christianity, coupled with the imperialist drives of militarist nation-states, have been used for nearly two thousand years to portray heterosexuality, sexism, racism, classism, and the oppression of the natural world as divinely ordained” and though today’s Western industrialized world claims to be largely secular, these countries with Christian and colonial origins retain the ideology of divinely inspired domination” (122). “All eco feminists who have addressed the topic of spirituality, have observed that Christianity has been used as both an authorization and a mandate for the subordination of women, nature, person of color, animals and queers” (123).

Christianity originated as one cult among many in the Roman Empire—Christianity is then by its very inception, an urban religion. It appeared during a time of increasing militarization in the Roman state where stoic morality held chastity as ideal--with heterosexual intercourse allowed only for procreation within marriage; the belief was that procreation was the only legitimate reason for intercourse (Greenberg 1988, 219)(124). “To be like the angels was to be spiritual; to be carnal, unspiritual. Sex was the essence of carnality, hence the antithesis of spirituality” (1988, 224).

What distinguished Christianity from the many other ascetic cults of its time was the severity of its asceticism, its complete intolerance of other religions, and its high degree of organization aka hierarchy (124). Two accounts in Genesis have been used in Christianity to legitimize human/nonhuman hierarchy (human domination over nature, Genesis 1) and anthropocentrism (man as the center of creation, Gensis 2) (124). Moreover, the word ‘hierarchy’ itself means ‘holy order’. As Apostle Paul once said: “Let everyone obey the authorities that are over him, for there is no authority except from God, and all authority that exists is established by God”.

Christianity fit quite nicely with Roman state ideals, and it spread through the Roman military where eventually the cross was adopted as a military symbol and the Roman Empire became the Holy Roman Empire—the union of church and state as representing God’s will on earth was sealed.

“The inferiority and subordination of women, animals, the body, nature, the erotic, and all their associates was proclaimed by law, decreed by religion and relentlessly enforced” through violent assaults such as the Inquisition, the Crusades, the witch burnings and the ‘voyages of discovery’ (124).

Chapter One: Pilot Pt.1

Summary: Y/N Kane was a mechanic apprentice that worked under Jake Griffin and Sinclare until Jake gets floated and you get locked up for treason. Now you are part of the 100 getting sent to earth. Of course you miss your best friend Wick but is stopping your dad Marcus Kane from coming down to earth worth losing Wick forever, the hot (totally not a guard) Bellamy Blake thinks so, so you just might follow him.

A/N: Thanks so much for giving this a read, sorry the summary sucks ass but I promise this will be worth the read. I've been working on this for months and I keep rewriting it until finally, I decided to just post it I don't know how many chapters this will be but I'm planning on doing the whole show so bare with me. Hope you enjoy!!

You lay upside down on your bed looking up through the skylight in your cell drumming lightly on your stomach. You jump a little hearing your cell door open but don’t move from your position.

“If it’s not Wick then I don’t want to talk.” You say blandly expecting the guards to be bringing your father into the room.

“Prisoner 224 please stand.” You flip over so you are sitting upright, crossing your legs.

“Why what’s going on?” Jason stood in the doorway, he was a guard you knew all too well. Jason was the main guard that arrested you.

“Kane you need to get up, I’m not going to ask you again.”

You sit back on your bed and cross your arms

“Then you’re gonna have to make me because I’m not going anywhere.” He sighs a little and gets out some kind of metal cuff while looking back at the other guards who put their hands on their weapons. They were smart to send more than one guard, you were notorious for putting up fights. Jason walks forward and reaches for you. You waste no time uncrossing your legs and kicking him straight in the balls. He hunches over groaning. The other two guards reach for you, you fight back one but the other gets you with his taser stick making you seize.

Jason stands and puts the cuff on you before you have a chance to recover. He and One of the other guards grab your arms and drag you out.

It took a second for you to recover but once you had control over your limbs again you immediately start kicking and thrashing against them. You had no clue where they were taking you but you knew it couldn’t be good, guards don’t just show up to your cell randomly.

“Where are you taking me! Let me go!” You scream trying to rip your arms from them but they only tightened their grip.

You saw your dad, he could give you answers. You have a rough relationship with him but you’re hoping he will help you.

“DAD!! Dad, please help me. what’s going on!?” You could see the pain and regret in his eyes as the guards struggled to get you to walk.

“Sedate her Abby.” Your heart dropped at his words.

“Marcus are you sure?”

“I said sedate her.” She nods and Jason gives her access to your arm.

“No no no please Abby please just tell me what’s going on” you cried.

“Sh it’s okay Y/N, you’re going to earth.” She sticks you with the needle and immediately you start to feel drowsy. Kane steps forward.

“Give her to me, I'll carry her to the dropship.” Kane picks you up bridal style and begins walking. “I’m sorry it had to be this was Y/N. I hope you know that I will always love you.” You try to speak but you could barely keep your eyes open, it wasn’t long till you were knocked out cold.

You jump awake trying to stand but you were strapped to a seat, looking around and see that you are in a drop-ship surrounded by the delinquents you’ve become friends with within the time you’ve been a prisoner.

“Monty, Jasper what’s going on?” Monty looks at you with a bright smile.

“Well, would you look at that, sleeping beauty is finally awake. We’re on a dropship going to Earth. Did no one tell you?” You scoff.

“Yeah after I got tased, yanked out of my cell, and drugged.” Monty and Jasper look at each other before laughing.

“Yeah you’re missing a key detail, the entire Ark probably heard the fight you put up.” You did a little bow in your seat.

“What can I say I needed to go out in true Y/N fashion.” Monty goes to say something but the ship suddenly jolts and alarms start to go off.

“What’s going on?!” You try to speak over the other delinquents and the blaring alarms.

“I think we just entered the atmosphere!” Monty yells back. It doesn’t take long for the ship to hit the ground. You look around and everyone freezes. “Listen, there’s no machine hun.”

“Woah, that’s a first,” Jasper half chuckles.

“I don’t think that’s a good thing Jasp,” You say hesitantly. Everyone starts to unbuckle themselves and go towards the door of the dropship.

“No. We can’t just open the doors” You look up hearing a familiar voice. Clarke. You didn’t know her very well but you knew her father Jake Griffin. Back on the ark, you saw him a lot while you were training under Sinclair to become an engineer, that’s also where you met your best friend Kyle Wick and where you were first introduced to Monty. You shook your head pushing Wick out of your thoughts. Not the time to think about him y/n.

“Hey, just back it up, guys.” Your head turns to another voice, one you didn’t recognize.

“Stop. The air could be toxic.” You roll your eyes a little.

“If the air is toxic, we’re all dead, anyway.” You step forward so you were in the view of both of them.

“He has a point, no reason for us to be locked in this metal coffin. I’d rather die out there than in here.” He smirks a little and Clarke shakes her head.

“Bellamy?” You had heard that voice before. Octavia Blake. You didn’t know her well, you had talked to her a few times in lockup.

“My God, look how big you are.” You step back a little not wanting to ruin the moment and look at Monty.

“Do you think we can get this backup and running?” He furs his brows.

“It’s not gonna be easy, I highly doubt they left us with the tools we’re gonna need.” You sigh before your head whips over to see the ship door opening and Octavia walking out. She takes in a deep breath stepping into the grass before raising her arms in the air.

“We’re back, bitches!” You laugh and run out with everyone, stopping as soon as your feet hit the ground. You look around in awe, bending down and running your fingertips over the grass. You stand back up and look at the dropship.

“Okay let’s see what’s going on with you.” You wipe your hands on your pants before climbing up the side of the ship. You look around the roof seeing missing panels and fried wires. “Well son of a bitch”

“Communication to the arch is impossible.” You jump a little almost falling but a hand catches your elbow.

“Maybe don’t sneak up on people when they are standing on a roof.” You look over at Finn who had caught your arm and then over to Wells who had been the one that scared you. You knew Finn, the infamous Spacewalker. Wells you also knew and he drove you absolutely insane. You sigh and rub your face.

“Thanks, Finn.” You look over at Wells “Gee great observation,” Wells puts his hands up in defense before going back down the side of the ship. You turn and look at Finn. “What do you think they’re gonna tell them?” He looks up at the sky and sighs.

“I have no clue. If we can’t talk to them maybe they’ll tell them we got some crazy virus and died.” You rub your face.

“We didn’t even get to say bye.” You took a deep breath and look around. “At least it’s beautiful here.” He nods and gives your arm a gentle reassuring squeeze.

“It’ll all work out one way or another.” You hun and look down at your wrists

“This thing is fucking uncomfortable.” Finn reaches over and grabs a small metal bar that got knocked off in the landing.

“Let’s try and get them off then.”

“If you stab me I will push you off this drop-ship” you tease.

“Oh ye have little faith.” You snort and playfully push his face. Finn takes the metal trying to get the bracelet off but ends up scratching the cuff.

“Here let me try” he hands you the metal and you end up doing the same amount of damage Finn did.

“What are you gonna do now, Wells?” You look over to the side of the ship and then back at Finn with a raised eyebrow.

“Come on. Come on.” Finn rolls his eyes at Murphy’s Taunting.

“Can’t they just leave the dude alone?” You snort.

“He deserves it if you ask me.” Finn gives you a pointed look and rolls his eyes. Finn goes forward jumping down from the roof in between Murphy and Wells.

“Kid’s got one leg. How about you wait until it’s a fair fight?” Murphy rolls his eyes.

“Yeah whatever” Octavia walks up to Finn with a flirty smile.

“Hey Spacewalker, rescue me next” you clap your hands over your mouth to stop you from laughing. You take a moment to stretch before jumping down.

“We’re you trying to take this off?” You look over at Finn and Clarke.

“I tried taking it off of him, they make my arm sweaty.”

“This wristband transmits your vital signs to The Ark. Take it off, and they’ll think you’re dead.”

“and why Should we care?” You say crossing your arms over your chest.

“Well, I don’t know. Do you want the people you love to think you’re dead? Do you want them to follow you down here in two months? Because they won’t if they think we’re dying.”

“All the more reason to get these bracelets off. Let Kane think I’m dead because he’s already dead to me.” She shakes her head and Finn steps in.

“So when are we leaving.” Clarke turns her attention to him.

“Now.” Monty looks over at you.

“Are you coming with us Y/N?” You nod your head and stand next to Monty and Jasper. You were in for a long journey but you were on earth so it didn’t matter to you. Nothing else mattered to you.

What an Arizona tree reveals about Earth’s hottest year and future warming

Deep in the Sonoran Desert, high on a mountain’s wind-swept peak, there lives a tree known as Bigelow 224. With its stout orange trunk and long, graceful needles, the tree looks like any other ponderosa pine growing on Mount Bigelow. But a sliver of its wood, taken amid Earth’s warmest year on record, shows that this tree has a story to tell — and a warning to offer. Bigelow 224 germinated nearly 200 years ago — a spindly sprout rooted in meager soil. Yet the pine has grown taller and wider each year by adding another ring to its trunk. Amid the balmy temperatures and lengthening days of the spring and summer, the newly formed tissue — known as earlywood — was the pale gold of morning sunlight. When autumn arrived, the tree switched to denser and darker latewood, signaling the beginning of the end of the growing season. All that the tree experienced — the winds that shook its branches, the rain that soaked its roots — was recorded in the rings. An extra-wide band attested to the prime growing conditions of 1856. A thin line bisecting the following year’s ring is the relic of a springtime drought that ended with the arrival of a summer monsoon. For centuries, Bigelow 224 stretched sunward while history unfolded below. The tree witnessed the rise of industrialization and the devastation of Native communities. It watched Arizona become the nation’s 48th state in 1912. Generations lived and died, wars were lost and won, humans walked on the moon and transformed Earth. Still, the tree has survived. But then came 2023, the hottest year that humanity — and Bigelow 224 — had ever seen. All around the planet, temperature records fell like dominoes. Up on Mount Bigelow, an unrelenting heat wave made the air feel like an oven and sucked moisture from the thin soil. The toll of those unprecedented conditions was etched into Bigelow 224’s trunk. Scorched by relentless heat and parched by a delayed monsoon, it appeared to stop growing midway through the season. The ring for this year is barely a dozen cells wide. It is a silent distress signal sent by one of Earth’s most enduring organisms. A warning written in wood.

Chapter 224 Trivia

Happy birthday Senku! He's finally in space! 🎉🚀

We can see the approximate distance to Treasure Island from the mainland in this shot, the only other indication of where the island is is in the (non-canon) Reboot side story. My guess is the exact island used is Aogashima.

Another summary of the journey, this time including prehistory. We have depictions from the most recent ice age (though could be later, mammoths and sinomegaceros were around for a while afterwards, even in Japan), early civilization similar to Ishigami Village, and ancient Rome.

For the parts present in the manga itself, I've added the chapter numbers to each of the panels.

The books Senku has here are "General Chemistry" and "たのしい科学" ("Fun Science"). The latter may be a reference to a children's science education book series named "たのしい! 科学のふしぎなぜ?どうして?" ("Fun! The Mysteries of Science: Why? How?").

We get a glimpse of the docking system here. Possibly based off the SSVP, as it was used with almost all the Soyuz craft and Russian space stations to connect modules.

This docking area then opens up, becoming the transfer tunnel so astronauts can enter/exit.

I suppose the astronauts were completely naked in their space suits so that when the revival fluid is released, their skin will definitely get touched?

I can't think of any other reason for it, but it does make the previous chapter funnier.

Senku's petrification scars are now fully healed!

(Stanley's are too, poor Xeno is the only one with them now.)

The mystery of how Stanley is meant to use these "cigarettes" remains.

These belts are the middle part of the external space suit, so it's probably how the top and bottom parts are locked in. After they change, they tighten the fabric inside so that it stays attached to them.

I'm not entirely sure why they need it, since current space suits usually just attach the top to the bottom directly.

They're using both CRT and LCD screens. My guess is the LCDs are more convenient (it's easier to display things from computer->LCD than it is to a CRT, also text is more legible due to the pixels), but they still have several CRTs from earlier so they may as well use them too.

Stanley asks about their oxygen supply, meaning they may be limited until the rocket is assembled. Normally, there's recycling systems onboard to collect waste products and convert it into clean air or water, but Stanley and Xeno's discussion makes me think they don't have one.

Obviously, the astronauts have new outfits, but they don't seem to follow any previous astronaut outfits depicted in the series.

Senku's popped collar is still present, but now he lacks his signature equation.

Stanley's outfit changed the least, it remains form-fitting and solid black, with white gloves.

Oddly, Kohaku is still wearing a dress in space, but it's a lot neater and more modern than her previous roughly-hemmed one. She's also got both long socks and boots without a heel.

The spray dryer does a similar preservation process to what they did when freeze-drying ramen, however this process is better for foods (and pharmaceuticals) that are sensitive to temperature.

Here, they dry a liquid (like ramen broth) using a hot gas, turning it into a powder.

In true Francois fashion, the ramen packets made by them contain more meat and garnishes than the ones Byakuya ate. They're also visibly more delicious-looking.

Without regular boosts, the ISS would fall to Earth in around 6 months, however this number can vary a lot depending on atmospheric conditions and the relative angle/position of the ISS to the direction of travel.

Basically, unless someone/something continued to control it almost immediately, the ISS is definitely gone.

(Rei didn't, the Reboot isn't canon.)

Ending apartheid is the only path to peace

“Things couldn’t stay as they were — and so, they didn’t. After almost a year of escalation, which was largely ignored by the international media despite near-daily death tolls, Israel and the Palestinian territories have erupted into a brutal and devastating war ...

“After many years of attempting to achieve statehood through non-violent legal and political means, the mainstream Palestinian movement has reached the end of a road. The world is now seeing the consequences of that reality. As Israeli newspaper Haaretz wrote in its editorial: ‘The prime minister … failed to identify the dangers he was consciously leading Israel into when establishing a government of annexation and dispossession … while embracing a foreign policy that openly ignored the rights and existence of Palestinians.’ That is a charitable perspective. Benjamin Netanyahu and his government must have been aware that this was one of the likely outcomes of their policies.

“As a result of those policies, between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea today, there is only one state. It governs two peoples who live by different rules: Jews, who enjoy the highest standards of human, civil and economic rights, even when these conflict with international law; and Palestinians, who cannot claim equal citizenship in any part of their historic homeland and instead live under varying degrees of oppression.

“In Gaza, this has meant a sixteen-year blockade which controls almost every aspect of what enters and leaves the territory — resulting in regular shortages of essentials from electricity to water to medicine, food and building materials. Two million people live in the Strip, almost half are children, more than half live in poverty and they have now been subjected to six wars since the blockade began.

“In the Occupied Territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Palestinians are divided into 224 ghettos, denied the rights to travel or associate freely by hundreds of roadblocks and military checkpoints, subject to arbitrary and prolonged detention (1,260 are currently interned without charge or trial), forcibly evicted on a regular basis, and killed, in the first half of 2023, at a rate of almost one per day. Then in Israel itself, they are also second-class citizens: denied the right to occupy as much as 80 percent of the land in a country that, since 2018, has been enshrined exclusively as a ‘nation state of the Jewish people.’

“The world’s leading human rights organisations, from Amnesty International to Human Rights Watch, describe this as apartheid. So, too, does the South African movement which lived under and fought that system. The Palestinians have a right to resist apartheid. Those who are appalled by violence must contend with the indisputable fact that every legal and political route to such resistance has been systematically closed off by the Israeli government ...

“In the coming days, Israel will accelerate efforts to erase Palestine by flattening large parts of Gaza. It will do so with one of the most powerful militaries the world has ever seen. It will do so as a policy, with its Defence Minister describing Palestinians as ‘human animals’ and army spokespeople saying, ‘our focus is on (creating) damage, not on precision.’ And it will do so with the complicity of the West, whose governments fly its flags on their official buildings.

“It will do this in the name of ‘eliminating Hamas.’ But Hamas, whose atrocities deserve bitter condemnation, is a product of alienation, desperation and dispossession. The movement is seen by millions of Palestinians as part of a resistance to exactly the kind of indiscriminate destruction Israel is now unleashing upon a defenceless population. If Israel truly wanted to ‘wipe Hamas off the face of the earth,’ as its Defence Minister says, it would deal with the conditions that created them. But of course, it has no intention of doing that.

“When you restore context to the situation in Palestine, it becomes clear that the only path to peace is the end of the apartheid system. And yet, anyone who makes that case can expect to be roundly demonised in the coming days and weeks. The established consensus is that the ‘normality’ which prevailed until just a few days ago must be restored — even if it is abundantly clear that such normality has led us precisely to today’s disaster.”
