Blood Night AU Beginning Part 2

The sun stung his eyes, even if the strange fog that had lingered for weeks took some of it away. Lyran inwardly cursed himself and why he hadn't gone to bed earlier, but in the end he had earned well and what was too little sleep. Wearing his traveling clothes and his lyre over his shoulder, he made his way to the marketplace, where the group of merchants he was going to travel with was to gather. Even from a distance, there was something strange. The noise level that usually accompanied the packing and gathering of such a group did not reach his ears. A glance up to check the position of the sun told Lyran that it was just after sunrise, as agreed. Arriving at the market, he found only the usual everyday bustle, but no merchant group. A deep sigh escaped him. "By the Five, not again…" "Thought you were from Wealzaryth," a familiar voice sounded behind him. Still searching his mind for where the voice belonged, Lyran turned to find Arritit before him, wrapped in several layers of thin cloaks. "What gave me away, dear Arritit?" "Your brightly colored clothing last night. Such colorfulness is usually found only in Wealzaryth. But what interests me more: What happened again?"

She tugged at her cloaks and pulled them further around her. Lyran reached out and pulled her closer to one of the stalls that offered hot food. Being near the fire should help a little against the cold, even if this early in the morning it was a wasted effort. "I usually travel with the merchants. The last group was supposed to take me all the way to Lagawood and left Dristwood without me, and the group I was supposed to set out for Lagawood with today isn't here." "Hey, bard, you mean the merchants from Stramsa'gonil?" the stall owner asked. Lyran looked over his shoulder at the young fellow. "I do. You know something?" "They took off as soon as it got bright, as if a horde of demons were after them. Never seen anything like it. Panicked and disorganized like kids playing trader." "Thank you, my friend. That helps a bit." Thoughtfully, Lyran had raised his hand and waggled his index finger. Beside him, Arritit chuckled. "If you want to go to Lagawood, we can team up. Provided you can wait another day." "One more day won't matter now. But isn't it too dangerous?" Again she laughed, then looked at him seriously. "I guess you forgot that I have magic. It doesn't get any safer than with me, dearest Lyran." "In that case, I'll gladly accept the offer. I'm too young and too talented to end up as monster food." A slight bow accompanied his statement, which made Arritit laugh again. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed some people watching them, though it wasn't clear why. "I couldn't agree more." "The only question then is how I can show my appreciation for it." "I have an idea or two." The flash in her eyes was already a warning. It was a manner he knew too well from Wealmoore's court, when some nobleman thought he could gain an advantage. "Will you fill me in?" "Let's start with you helping me carry. I clearly need different footwear and cloaks in this dreary weather. Especially if I want to keep going north." She shook herself at the last part of the sentence, clearly reluctant to expose herself to snow. "I'm not a particularly big fan of snow, either." "Then we already have something in common." "Then let me be your pack mule for the day, we wouldn't want you to catch a cold or worse." "How very thoughtful of you," she replied, amused, and turned to leave.

With purpose, Arritit walked toward one of the booths. The way she moved through the crowd, knowing where the farmers stood with their puny chickens for slaughter, and exactly where to go so she would be at the merchant of her choice, was not only elegant, but also a testament to the fact that this was not her first time in the city. Eyes always at the sides, Lyran followed her with a little more effort and also to soak up the atmosphere of the market. Something was different from the last days, but he could not name it. It was little things, like the kind of sounds that sounded clearer and at the same time strangely dull, the inhabitants in themselves, going about their day's work on one side and at the same time there was something invisible on their shoulders that depressed their attitude and mood. It reminded him of the scary stories he loved as a child.

"Welcome, welcome! What can I do for you on this cold morning?" the merchant shouted enthusiastically. Like a little box devil, he jumped off his stool. "I need a warm coat. It was still summer when I left, and I need to get to Stramsa'gonil," Arritit explained without mincing words. Her gaze already at a particularly thick one. "You'll need more than just a thick coat there. Do you have gloves and hats? Scarves? Sturdy footwear that's lined? Trust me, losing limbs to the snow is no fun." To punctuate, the merchant raised a hand with the little finger missing. Arritit raised her hand defensively with a smirk that Lyran felt confident but also playful, making him excited to see what she would do now. He leaned a few steps aside from her against the thick beam that held the faded fabric roof of the booth and observed. "Do not worry, dear friend, it is not my first trip to the north, but if you would be willing for a few Renvalis less to add one of your beautiful furs to me as a collar, I would not be averse. I would like to arrive at my mother's house in good health." The merchant put his hand on his chest and nodded gravely. Lyran almost laughed and just managed to make it end in a grunt. "You're visiting your old mother and traveling across the continent to do it? Great mother, what a great heart you have," briefly the merchant looked around at the goods Arritit had his eye on and sighed, "Such a deed must be rewarded. Twelve Renvalis for my thickest coat and largest fur." Even though Arritit clasped her hands in front of her mouth in a gesture of apparent emotion, Lyran saw from his position how she grinned broadly behind it. The fur alone was probably worth that much, and she had just cheated the poor merchant out of good money with her sob story, but if he fell for it, nothing could be done. "How generous of you. May the Great Mother bless you for it." While the deal was being transacted, Lyran's eyes wandered over the nearby stalls. At the candy stand, he stopped. "I'll be right back." "I'll find you, my pretty pack mule."

Briefly, his steps faltered, but Lyran shook the comment away. Arritit wasn't the first to think him handsome, even if it was one of the few times someone had dropped it so casually. "Morning, what can I do for you?" the stall owner mumbled sleepily. Lyran quickly surveyed the display and nodded in satisfaction. "I'll take three irons each from that one, that one, and that one." With the speed of a sleepy man, the owner readied the scales and weighed the dried fruits and nuts Lyran had pointed to. He had just paid and stowed the small bag of goodies in his travel bag when Arritit also appeared behind him as if she had come out of a portal. "Provisions for tonight or for the road?" "Both. The amount should last a few days." Lyran glossed over the part about how it only worked if he didn't pounce on the candy like a ravenous pack of wolves. "Did you plan on me, too?" she just grinned cheekily. "What?" "Now that I know you have candy, you have to share. Old travel rule." Slowly, she walked past him, but kept her eyes on him. A shiver ran down Lyran's spine as the thought occurred to him that she didn't just want dried fruit.

In all the years he had never responded to advances made to him, and he didn't want to start now, but Lyran couldn't stand the loneliness anymore, nor could he stand being alone again after a while. Maybe it was time to give up his principles. His breath clouded his vision as he snorted at the thought that this was probably the core of why bards were said to be unfaithful, chasing the next score everywhere. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy basically, if people just treated them like better brothel whores, then eventually they acted like it. The thought alone disgusted Lyran to the point of chilling him. Arritit looked over her shoulder, wavy hair hiding half her face, but it was enough to see that she cared. "Are you all right?" "It's fine, just some dark thoughts that the morning hasn't dispelled yet." Her gaze continued to linger on him until at the end, Lyran looked away. "Have you had breakfast yet?" "Not much." The serious look that probably all healers and shamans learn in their training met Lyran's eyes. At the same moment, Arritit grabbed near his hand and pulled him to the nearest food stall. "Two milk teas with honey and two bread pockets with meat and vegetables." "You don't have to do that," Lyran tried to contradict, but again the punishing look hit him. "I know enough bards. You're always on the verge of keeling over on me from hunger because you don't eat enough, so you can keep traveling. Besides, I need you to keep your strength up if you're going to haul everything for me, right?" Arritit grinned cheekily at him, paid the vendor, and passed his portion to Lyran in a way that didn't even make him think of objecting further. "Thanks." "You've got good manners, too, not just a pretty face." "I do what I can," Lyran laughed into his cup.

Gearshift x Slide & Glide? We haven’t seen a ton of Gearshift, but from what we’ve seen it’s pretty clear how it works at least nowadays, and… it just kinda seems like it fits really well with Slide & Glide. Like strangely well. I dunno, maybe it’s just their presentation or the way they give others speed being a little non traditional compared to other “speedster” Quirks in MHA. But I’d love to see how they combine.

This is about two OVA/anime only characters so feel free to ignore if you’re not interested. I was wondering how Saiko Intelli and Fujimi Romero’s quirks would interact. Romero’s zombies are strong, but stupid; however Intelli can increase her intelligence with her quirk. If she drank a load of tea before and after zombification, could she get the benefits of being a zombie without the downsides? Thanks for all the hard work, big fan of the blog!

This is a very simple and quick question, but one that I think is important: I'm making an OC that has one of his Quirks, the Gemcutter. In your opinion, what Quirks should this OC's parents have for it to make sense for my OC to have the Gemcutter? I know this is an extremely unusual question, but I'm not asking for a description of each Quirk, the only thing I want is your advice on what kind of Quirks parents should have. Maybe the father has a protection Quirk and the mother can produce gemstones? Or maybe something else? Could you help me with this?

I don't have any interest in reverse engineering my Quirks like this. If you want to make parents for a character, you can just make it a direct inheritance.

Bit of an odd question (you probably read that a lot) but i saw a fanfic where Monoma was an altered clone of All for One and that got me thinking: How different do you think the story would be if Monoma got a weaker version of All for One (or even All for One at its strongest) instead of Copy?

Why would changing the Quirk of a background character change the plot he has nothing to do with?

When sato powers up, does he also gain a speed and durability boost like other strength quirks such as one for all, stress, muscle augmentation, or beast? If it’s just strength then that makes sugar rush even worse since sato isn’t even getting the full strength buff

This is more of a Ben ten question but if Izuku found the omnitrix, what aliens would fit his personality and skill set ? Limit to being 10 aliens if possible and he won’t have one for all

The aliens in Ben 10 are basically costumes for the character to put on. There really isn't anything that would fit Izuku specifically or what I can really say about it.

I know that he was a minor character but how would you say how crusts quirk functioned from the parts we were shown.

There is barely anything to work off of with him and I don't think his Quirk is interesting enough for me to work around.

Do you think a quirk to control the speed of atomic vibrations essentially allowing the user to control the temperature of things is possible or too op? Maybe if the drawbacks are like the Todoroki family and too much freezing or heating overheats or freezes the user.

Can you make a quirk based off Rumble from Transformers? If you are unware, Rumble is a mincon capable of generating powerful Earthquakes by continuously punching the ground, in some iterations he does this by turning his arms into piledrivers.

i want to make a quirk that allows the user to propel themselves and ‘jump’ on air, granting them pseudo-flight, but i’m not sure how to incorporate some kind offensive ability in it. it’s very agility based but i want some way to round it out a little. do you have any ideas?

Could you make a quirk based on pyro from X-men? Basically like hellflame except the user can cannot create fire, but not only can they manipulate it with surprising control but also enhance and empower the flames that have access too, taking a small lighter and create a flame thrower or launch large blasts of fire.

Softening vs Elasticity

I had some ideas for cemedine and I wanted to run them by you first. The first idea was to copy Mina’s acid man technique and coat bondo in a semi dry glue armor to protect himself and potentially be able to crawl up walls with the semi sticky glue on his hands and feet. For offense he could harden the glue on his fist and punch someone or fire out small globs instead of a wave then harden the glue so the hardened pellets do damage. I was also thinking of him making a pile of glue then molding and drying it into crude tools like spears or hammers. Maybe he could layer the ground in slippery glue to slide around or trick an enemy by walking on it then if they walk on it he dries it.

Not sure if you’ve covered this but which pairs of students from class 1B do you think went up against what teacher for their final exams?

This ended up being really long so most of it is under the cut!

Jaune and Yang’s daughter find an old treasure when searching for her birthday gifts.

Huáng has always been curious. Her mother often states just how similar she was to her aunt in that regard. They both had questions, and would often voice them even when they're afraid. It was a point of pride for the young Xiao Long. In fact it was wanting to be more like her wonderful aunt that led her to digging through her parent's closest. It was originally to find her birthday gifts. She's only going to turn ten once, and who would it hurt to take a quick peak? No one, she decided before rummaging through their old clothes in the deepest parts of her parent's closest. With several face fulls of cobwebs, several plugged sneezes caused by the dusty corners, and many piles of forgotten clothes she was left with the bitter taste of failure in her mouth.

There was no presents anywhere. She could search the closest for the rest of her life and in the end she'd still not find them. Bitterly Huáng admits her defeat, but now her curiosity was left unsated. She hadn't found what she set out to discover, but that didn't mean her adventure was a waste! Filled with a sense of what her dad calls gung-ho. Huáng dives back into the closest. She'd either find something worthwhile, or her parents will find her there. A short time out, with maybe a few rounds of training after, and she'd be back in here. Still searching for something worthwhile. An answer to a question she doesn't even have yet. There was always something interesting buried in their closets. Anything her parents didn't have a place for was always abandoned it their furthest corners. Waiting patiently to be found by her and remembered. Even if they weren't her birthday presents.

It takes a long while before the young nine year old finally finds something other then clothes or shoes. What was buried beneath three coats was a shoe box. A shoe box older then the other pairs of her father's. It has a picture of yellow combat boots on the side. So it must've belonged to her mom. With the lid already cracked her dark blue eyes are drawn to this mystery box. Quickly she looks over her shoulders. No one had come to search for her yet. Tying her bright, blonde hair back into a ponytail, Huáng takes a deep breath. This could be a hidden treasure! Why else would it be tucked away so deep in this mess. Tucking the shoe box under her arm, Huáng shoves her way past the hanging clothes, and out of the closest.

Now safely positioned on her bed with it's green sheets and complimentary red pillows, Huáng pushes her best friend, an old beowulf stuff toy aside. Henrietta was in the way. No one smart got in her way when she was solving a mystery. Just like no grimm can stand in the way of her aunt when she's out on a mission. Carefully she sets the lid aside, as if mistreating it could leave permanent evidence of her escapade. Inside the shoe box was a book. Neatly printed in the leather cover were the words, 'Forever Memories'. She takes the book out of the box. With a quick wipe the dust is gone and the brown leather looks almost new. As if the book had barely been touched for however many years it was in there.

So of course the next logical step is to open it. The first picture was tucked inside a large plastic slot on the other side of the cover. There was a picture of herself as a baby. Her father, Jaune holding her as Yang smiles proudly while winking at the camera. Standing behind the two of them was Ruby, barely taller then her parents in the photo with one arm wrapped around each of their shoulders'. Standing next to Yang was the rest of team RWBY. Weiss and Blake smile awkwardly at the camera as they put just a small amount of space between themselves and her family. On the other side of her father was his team. Nora made no such effort to put space between Huáng's family and herself. She's got one arm looped around Uncle Ren's and her other hand tucked politely in the crook of Jaune's. Just enough to hold the two of them close to her without dropping little Huáng. Oscar stands with an embarrassed smile on the other side of a proud smiling Ren. Even Oscar was unable to escape the close knit group as he was leaning against Ren's side. Held there by Ren's free hand around his shoulders.

She's so enraptured by the faces of the dead it takes a long time for her to look throughout the rest of the book. Nora had been dead for the last four years. She couldn't even recall what shade her hair had been. Let alone what her voice used to sound like. Her father had such trouble talking about her and Uncle Ren. He'd choke up anytime he ever even thought of the two of them, and yet there was a book right here. A book that could show her the adopted aunt and uncle that died when she was little. Her memories hold a little of Ren. Specifically whenever she thinks back to her sixth birthday, it was the sad look in his eyes. He was thinner at her party then he was in the photo. In fact this was the only picture she has ever seen where he was happily smiling. Maybe he was always such a sad man.

Huáng doesn't know how he died. Her parent refused to let anyone talk about it when in the home. There was always this painful look form her father, and a steady steel-eyed gaze to whoever came close to bringing him up. All she knows is that he was sad about Nora. He missed her, and so Ren threw himself into work. He went on mission after mission alone, only ever taking a break when there was something happening with her. Still her father reminds her how much her passed on aunt and uncle loved her. He had several stories about the way her uncle would only smile when she was around. How far he would go to finish a mission just to be there for her birthdays.

But if he cared so much, why is he gone? Should she even call them family? They've been gone for so long.

No longer enjoying the questions the image stirs up Huáng moves on. The first few pages were of moments with her and her family. Her first steps chasing after her Aunt Ruby. That time her semblance activated as she watched her parents train. Her parents before and after photos when they had her. Her first day of school. These photos were placed erratically and no where near in chronological order. Almost as if someone had printed them all off together and randomly placed them into these pages. She flips through the pages, pushing past all the photos of her and the adults until gradually things did begin to have an order.

The organized photos start with a picture of her parents playfighting. Her mother holds Jaune in a headlock as he smiles up at her. Gradually they appear younger. More of their friends show up in the photos. The story they tell become less about the two of them and more about their teams. With every flip of a page the photos reflect moments that aren't even told in stories to her. Teams RWBY, and JNOR standing in front of a statue of a young women in a snow covered city. To a photo of her mother sleeping on her bike outside of a bus station. There's even a photo of her dad with a huge cut going up his arm. It must've healed well because she doesn't remember seeing any scars on his arms. At least, none that large.

Eventually she finds the pages of their time at beacon. Nearly none of their photos were of the two of them together here. In fact almost all of them were just of their teams. Her mother and Aunt Ruby chasing each other around a pond. Her mother's yellow metal arm now one of muscle and skin. There were a dozen more of team RWBY lazing around the school. Even more of pranks being done. One where Weiss woke up with a whip cream mustache. Another where Blake was drenched in water with a bucket of fish on the other side of the door. Half of them were just of her mom and Aunt Ruby.

The ones with her father were few and far between. There was Nora and Ren, but no Oscar in these photos. Instead someone with long red hair and a gold circlet was in them. She had pretty green eyes and a soft smile. In all these photos of Beacon Nora and Ren were always together. They appear even closer in these older photos. Yet her eyes keep drifting towards the red head. No one had ever mentioned her. In all these stories they have of their past nothing. All the fun adventures her parents love to share. She's never mentioned in one of them.

Carefully she slips the largest photo from it's socket. One with her father's original team standing side by side. An emotion she isn't quite sure how to describe fills her chest as she looks at the picture. Her heart beats faster, but her stomach twists something terrible. The same way it does when she eats too many of Aunt Ruby's cookies. Even her nose starts to itch like it tends to when she rolls down the hills nearby. It's impossible for her to know what the emotion is, but she knows what's causing it.

Everyone in that photo, they were all gone now. Everyone except her father. Her father who's still a hunter. Just like her mom. Huáng knows that hunting isn't perfect. It's not safe. People don't return all the time, but her parents always do. Aunt Ruby always has. Why didn't the rest of his team?

"Huáng?" She shoves the picture into the book before slamming it shut. Yes she had expected to be caught but not right now. Not when her stomach hurt.

"What'cha got there, kiddo?" Vainly Huáng pushes the book under the cover. Pale purple eyes follow it as if they were glued. With a smirk she leans against the doorframe. Muscly arms crossed she stretches her feet out to the opposite corner. Yang's body fills the doorway. There would be no escape.

The whole room slows down as Huáng tries to find a way out. There has to be. Her mother can't find out that she had been searching for her birthday gifts. She could just claim she was looking for some of her mother's clothes. Maybe she was curious about how they would look on her. Aunt Ruby had done that several times when they were kids. She told her so! Any excuse would work. As long as her mother didn't think about it for too long and realize the truth. It was just a book. There's no way she would be in as much trouble over some old photos as she would be for searching for her birthday presents.

"Uh," the creaking up the stairs fills the silence quickly. Giving her plenty of reason to stop talking. Dad was near.

"Hey," She sees his long blonde bangs before his face. They were messy with dirt and even a broken twig sticking out. He gives Yang a quick peck on her cheek.

"Your daughter is hiding something." Her tone's playful. That's a good side. Smiling her best, most innocent smile Huáng places her hands in her lap.

Jaune laughs nervously. "Oh no."

"Oh yes."

"You only call her my daughter when she does something that you did as a kid. Did she find her presents early again?" He slips a hand around Yang's waist. Burying his chin in her shoulder Jaune smiles sympathetically at his daughter. Silently he mouths the word, run.

Brushing her long ponytail back Yang throws her blonde locks right into his face. "You're not helping her out of this one."

Jaune coughs. He buries his face into her shoulder using her shirt to brush her hair from his eyes. "What?" Voice breaking at an absurdly high pitch he cries, "Help her! Y-yang come on. I just wanted to cuddle with my adorable, lovely," With a soft jab in his side, Jaune relents. Folding his hands over his sides he looks apologetically at Huáng.

All the while her parents were having their own little show Yang never looked away from Huáng. It gave her absolutely no chance to move. Why was her mother always so focus? Maybe Aunt Ruby would know how to sneak more stuff past her. Though that trick with the cookie jar she taught her hadn't worked either. If only she had a semblance like Ruby's. She could use it to dart down the stairs, straight out the front door! The birds were so quiet now. Did they know?

"Huáng what did you try to hide when your mama walked in?"

"It was just a book!" Which was true. It's just a book. A book she didn't find at all while searching for her gifts. Nah. Just an old book with a bunch of old photos.

"What book?" Jaune asks. Almost tripping, he squeezes his way past Yang into the room. He looks back at her and laughs. Yang juts her head back towards Huáng.

"This one daddy." With a sickeningly sweet voice Huáng uncovers the book. All the color in her father's face disappears.

"Oh." That was the softest she's ever heard his voice. Racking her brain for another example, Huáng's mind goes blank. His blue eyes cling to the book's cover. That recognition was so quick. The realization that this book was actually really important grips her tightly. Huáng freezes in place. Soft fingers, dig into the leather. It's course unlike before. Had she just not noticed, or did the cover change when she wasn't looking? Does knowing that this book actually matters, that it can actually terrify her father? She's seen him fight. He has never balked at anyone. Not even her mother. Never a whimper, no matter the scar. Yet he shakes at the mere sight of this book. Desperately Huáng looks to the only other person she can. Yang.

The bright sunny dragon of Vale. The fiercest warrior to ever grace the land. Her mother. Yang crosses the room with a speed Huáng doesn't even get to see when she watches the two of them train. She didn't even have time to blink and there was her mother. Gently holding Jaune in her arms. Her eyes pierce through Huáng. Had she done something wrong?

"I'm sorry." She starts to hide the book again but her father stops her. He pulls it out from under the covers carefully, as if their blankets could cut the book in half. He moves easily out of Yang's grasp and sits on the edge of the bed. His eyes were distant as they stare at the cover.

"What's wrong with the book mom."

"It's an old photo album."

"What's wrong with a photo album?"

"Nothing's wrong with it. It just holds some, precious memories." Her mother sits on the edge of the bed next to him. Her warm purple eyes still looking on at him.

"Why haven't I seen most of these photos?"

"They're old," As an after thought she adds, "hard to look at."

"Why?" Uncle Ren and Nora she new about. They weren't around anymore and that made dad sad. The photo album was filled with pictures of them, but her parents had never tried to hide the two of them from her before. In fact the only person that was in some of the photos she didn't recognize was the red-haired woman.

Letting out a sigh her mother bites her lip. She squeezes her eyes shut the way she always does when trying to answer Huáng's questions. "Because they're-"

"Is it because of the red haired lady?"

Yang looks to Jaune. She's nervous, hesitate, but he's smiling now. As if the bad cloud had finally moved from above his head.

"Her name was Pyrrha. She was an old friend. My first partner ever when I arrived at Beacon."

"I thought Ren and Nora were your first partners." If she was before them then why didn't her father ever talk about her?

He laughs. That was when Huáng knew the storm had passed completely. Her father was sad but it wasn't the bad kind of sad. Not the sort of sad Uncle Ren had been in her brief memories. Jaune closes the book and places it on the night stand next to the bed. He falls back onto the bed with a little oomf. Short strands of his yellow hair brushes against Huáng's pants. It tickles her legs just enough to make her laugh. Yang picks Huáng up. Her mother's arms were as strong as always. Being lifted felt like she was becoming weightless, even as it ends with a snug hug.

They fall back onto the bed next to her father. Poking her nose he smiles sadly before continuing. "We had teams of four. There were partners, like your aunts Ruby and Weiss, and your aunty Nora and uncle Ren." He stretches his hands up towards the ceiling. He holds up two fingers on either hand. "Two partners find each other and then they find another team of two. Then boom," he taps his hands against one another. He closes one hand and holds up four fingers on the other. "a whole team of four."

"Does that make sense my little phoenix?" Yang gives her cheeks a little pinch.

"Yeah."

"Great. Now next time you want to look through this book you have to ask first." Jaune pushes himself back up off of the bed.

"And we moved your presents out of the closest." Yang adds as she follows suit.

"Unfair!" Huáng crosses her arms and pouts. As her parents start to leave she realizes there was one more question she had. "So I get who the red haired lady was, but why was dad wearing a dress?"

Jaune's face turns tomato red. "Wait what?" Yang couldn't stop laughing to answer. "That photo is in there?"

Her mother holds her stomach as she struggles to speak. "It was a wonderful night. Would've bene a shamed if the best moment hadn't been preserved."

"I can't believe you didn't tell me you still had a copy of it."

"Oh don't feel too bad. My dad has some pictures of Uncle Qrow in a skirt from back in school."

"So where's the photo of you in your prom dress?" Her father was moving his arms around quickly. Yet despite all of his energetic talking Yang merely stood still and watched him with a pleasant smile.

"Destroyed. It was a boring dress anyways."

"Plain white dresses did seem like the theme that year."

Yang clicks her tongue and points her finger guns at him. "Exactly." They were lost in their own world. Huáng wasn't sure if that was entirely normal because she never saw anyone else get like that besides them, but her parents were always smiling during these little sessions of theirs. It wasn't like they were arguing, not really. It was surprising to hear that either let alone both of her parents had worn dresses at some point. Huáng had never seen either of them get dressed up in those kinds of clothes before. The photo may have been old but what would her father look like in one now?

She slides off the bed. Skipping across the room towards her parents who were now right outside the room in the hallway she smiles. Huáng raises her voice just enough so she would absolutely be heard. "So can we all wear dresses to my school meeting next week?"

Jaune and Yang look at their daughter surprised. Her mother smiles nervously at her dad. His own smile was much larger. "Of course sweetie."

With a sigh her mom rolls her eyes. "Guess we have to go dress shopping again."

"It'll be fun. Just the three of us! We'll get matching outfits!" He picks Huáng up and sets her on his shoulders. "How does that sound?"

"Perfect! I want a green one!"

"Green's not as boring as white."

Yang rolls her eyes and laughs. She was definitely looking forward to the shopping trip too. Her mom may never go out of her way to look pretty, but she always was. Maybe one day she'll be as tall and beautiful as her. Huáng hopes she will be.

An exhaustive list of Dark Souls 3 bosses I would or would not date

Iudex/Champion Gundyr

We’re starting off this list with a strong yes. Our boy Gundyr has had a hard, difficult life, and he deserves some good company. He’s tall, strong, and I trust him to protect us as we set a lovely camp site outside of the fire link shrine.

Vordt of the Boreal Valley

Vordt is big and he is feral which are truly the only two qualities I look for in a man. Together we’d be unstoppable. I mean, think about how easy it would be to go around with him: just climb on his back and let the rodeo begin, baby. This argument alone should be enough to convince you that Vordt is a suitable boyfriend, but here’s another one: if you get too hot in the summer, worry fucking not for your gigantic man can hold his equally gigantic hammer over you and cover you with snow like an italian man covering his pasta with parmesan.

Cursed Rotted Greatwood

Now while I’m certain it would be a perfect partner for some people, the Cursed Rotted Greatwood isn’t for me. For one, I am not fan of curses, or rot, or weird sticky balls, or strange orange acid, or pale white and slightly viscous hands bursting through a living tree. Secondly, I feel like the crowd of Hollows who group up around the tree would be a big impediment to our intimacy, and I’m not ready to be the mother of 20 Hollows.

Crystal Sage

No offense but you’d be an idiot for not wanting to date the Crystal Sage. All wrapped up in one package, you get a super competent sorcerer bf, who wears the coolest hat in the galaxy and an equally cool cape, and who overall looks like the upgraded version of a plague doctor. In addition to that he also has a pretty rapier so you can both engage in some sparring (which we all know is the most romantic couple activity).

Deacons of the Deep

Probably one of the worst options on the list, they’re all crusty, rotting men moaning around a biggass coffin. There are many technical questions. If I dated a deacon, would I have to date all of them? Can we go out on dates or are they obligated to stay next to the coffin at all times? Can I even date them at all?? Not that I would, because I have standards. The only pro to entering this relationship(s?) would be that I’d probably get one of their robes for free, but the cons are so numerous that I’d rather buy it myself.

Abyss Watchers

Let’s be real and honest even if it hurts. Would I date an Abyss Watcher? Yes. Maybe I’d even date two. However, would an Abyss Watcher date me? No, because they’re all in love with Artorias, and I can’t blame them for that.

Old Demon King

At first I considered dating the Old Demon King like a Russian Instagram model dates an old, rich American man: with a great deal of fake love but above all great patience in order to be the only person on the will. But then I thought about it more, and what does the Old Demon King have to offer, really? A big firework show that will leave him exhausted like the old creature he is, and maybe some pyromancies. Truly, it is not worth it, especially since I’d have to take residence where he lives, in a big old room filled with the corpses of his kin.

High Lord Wolnir

I’ve got nothing against Wolnir personally, but I have no interest in skeletons, nor in his army of skeleton children. As stated above I’m not ready to be a mother. I feel like if we got in an argument and he sighed, he would poison me with his awful breath and I would die a horrible death. Also, living on the brink of the Abyss doesn’t appeal to me that much. However I would like Wolnir to be a good friend I can talk jewelry with because let’s be honest, the man (skeleton?) is blinged the fuck out even in death and I respect that.

Yhorm the Giant

Yes, I would date Yhorm. He was nothing but a sweet, misunderstood giant who always tried to get people to trust him and he convinced me. I would put my life in his big hands. Think of the possibilities. Just like with Vordt he could carry you everywhere but in a less reckless way if you prefer proper manners. You’d never have to worry about not seeing anything at a concert. Also, may I add that waiting for you to show up while sitting on his biggass throne is an absolute power move? Yhorm is a Lord of Cinder, but above all, a Lord of this heart.

Pontiff Sulyvahn

Would I date him because of his appealing aesthetic? Yes. Would I date him for anything else? No. Sulyvahn is absolutely terrifying, completely unhinged in the most frightening way, which is that he doesn’t look bat shit crazy. I could be thinking that everything is going well in our relationship then suddenly he’d lock me in a dungeon then would feed me to his weird friend because I put a fork in the knife drawer. He could pretend to propose and give me a weird fucked up ring with his eye in it and the next thing I know I’d be running in a field on all fours. I don’t trust like that.

Aldritch, Devourer of Gods

I’m so sad about Aldritch because literally everything about him is completely unappealing, unacceptable, unnatural, unholy, abhorrent, but he has the delicate and beautiful face of Gwyndolin. While our lovely Gwyndolin looks gorgeous as ever it doesn’t make up for the fact that Aldritch devoured people and probably wouldn’t find love to be a good reason to not eat his partner. The only reason I can find to have a friendship (not even a romantic relationship) with him is if you really like experimenting with cooking and you really, really need someone to taste your inventions.

Dancer of the Boreal Valley

I feel attraction, which means that just like any other being who feels attraction, I would date the Dancer. She is beautiful, graceful, a bit feral, and would not hesitate to put a flaming knife to my throat, which is the description of my dream woman. Imagine walking the streets with her, trying to hold her hand while it dangles 3 feet above you and she insists on holding her sword, actually, so she might slay anyone who tries to approach you, which she communicates through icy breaths and murmurs. The date of a lifetime.

Oceiros, the Consumed King

Another awful choice on this list, Oceiros is RABID and also, as far as we know, still a married man. You really want to date a man that hasn’t even gone through his divorce but already looks like this? Me neither. I’m already not big on dragon fucking but the fact that he’s all viscous and has weird growths all over him is not helping. Also, he has children, and we know how I feel about that — although, given how he treats them, he probably won’t have kids very soon (too far?).

Ancient Wyvern

So I’ve stated that I’m not very big on dragon fucking. With that said, do I think the wyvern is sexy and beautiful? Absolutely so. You’re probably like « Blue you’re sending mixed signals, are you gonna date the lizard or not? » and to that I say, date? Perhaps not. I would however like to form a lifelong bond with this wonderful force of nature and fight by its side, live a long and fulfilling life travelling along with it, only to die at the same time atop the tallest mountain in the world, where our skeletons will be discovers hundreds of years in the future by brave explorers, who will confirm that the legendary songs that were written about us were in fact not just a myth.

Nameless King

You’ve just read what I said about the wyvern. I feel like the Nameless King really understands me and would respect me for that. We could bond over our love of dragons and other flying scaly beasts and perhaps share some chaste kisses while soaring the sky on our companions. It’s nice to date someone who loves pets as much as you. I feel like he would be a fun guy to hang around in general, maybe he’d let you braid his hair or try on his crown. He can arrange personalized fireworks shows for you with his lightning powers. I don’t think you’d ever be bored around him.

Dragonslayer Armor

Dating an empty suit of armor has never bothered me (see: ds2 Ruin Sentinels), however I have beef with the dragonslayer armor. Is it a beautiful armor? Perhaps a bit worn off, but the reply remains affirmative. However, it is controlled by Pilgrim Butterflies, which basically means I’m dating one to multiple of these things in the shape of an armor, and I’ve gotta confess that I’m not down for that.

Lorian Older Prince and Lothric Younger Prince

Here comes the delicate moment where we have to make a choice without offending anyone. I personally, speaking for myself, in my own opinion, would rather date Lorian. Reason: he is big, strong, and a bit rabid, which I’ve made very clear is my type. I don’t dislike Lothric, but I feel like we’d be better off as best friends who have a really snarky group chat where we shit talk the entire kingdom. That’s pretty good because if I even just slightly disliked Lothric I’m pretty sure Lorian would sense it and would not hesitate to murder me on sight.

Champion’s Gravetender and Champion Greatwolf

Well the full name is just a formality here, I’m not completely insane so I don’t want to date this rabid wolf. I feel like the Champion’s Gravetender is just a normal dude who’s a bit in over his head and it’s not his fault but he just seems a bit boring compared to all my other options. Instead of a date I think he’d be more of an awkward flirt I had when I was bored and then I came to my senses but didn’t know how to disengage, but in the end it worked out because he was more interested in his work anyway.

Sister Friede and Father Ariandel

Again a choice has to be made and I will have to be predictable and say I’d date Elfriede. Just like Dancer she’s what the woman of my dreams is made of. She’s graceful and could easily take my life and I think it’s awfully sexy of her to be like that. I think I’d be accepted into the family pretty easily, which is important since Father Ariandel cares about Friede so much. I’d go visit him sometimes, play chess with him, bring him his flail, normal interactions with your girlfriend’s dad.

Soul of Cinder

I’m gonna be a tiny bit freaky here and say I’d date the Soul of Cinder. Dating it is just like opening a Kinder Surprise egg, you never know what you’re gonna get (sorry Americans for excluding you here). That makes life exciting and doesn’t let routine stall your relationship. Every day you can wake up with the question « What weapon will my darling walk around with today? The flaming sword, or the sorcery staff? » and be surprised by the answer. Truly ideal, but I understand it’s not for the faint of heart.

Demon Prince

I’m gonna go with a maaaaaaybeeeee? leaning towards no. I mean yes, the Demon Prince is a weird fleshy flaming demon, and that may be a bit gross, but I’ve gotta admit I admire his style, the drama of it all. The care he puts into his entrance, the attitude in his moves. If we don’t date I’d at least want to be friends so he can teach me his ways.

Darkeater Midir

I have very intense and contradictory feelings towards Midir. In one hand, holy shit, absolutely epic dragon, the spirit of companionship is growing in me. On the other hand, this beast is RABID and pretending I could tame him is foolish, and pretentious. I guess in the end the answer remains that I don’t date dragons, I just want to adopt them as my extremely exotic pets.

Halflight, Spear of the Church

Yeah I’d date Halflight, I know it’s the easy answer but look at him. I mean shit he’s walking around like a little thotty with his shirt open and you mean to tell me I’m not supposed to wanna date him because he looks pretty much like a regular dude? My boy Halflight WANTS me to date him or else he would not show up with his tiddies out to a sword fight, which as an activity already has enough erotic implications on its own.

Slave Knight Gael

I’m gonna say it unashamedly and I’ll say it again: I would date Gael. He’s been nothing but helpful and when he tries to attack you it’s to help his little lady that he’s adopted as his niece. We love a chaotic parental figure. Maybe he’s a tad bit old and dirty but there’s nothing a good bath can’t fix and I’m sure he’d appreciate having someone taking care of him for once. Again, he’s got that slightly unhinged quality to him that makes him delightful. When I walk around with my partner I want us to instill both fear and fascination in people which we would be able to accomplish perfectly well.

Based on last popularity poll, characters like Paradigm, Justice and Kliff appear to be on the low end of the list. Considering trying to keep the spirit of the character the same, and without forcing players to like them, what could they do to make the characters more popular? (Note, I assume Fanny could gain a following once she gets transplanted into the main game).

By and large, a character like Kliff Undersn still has plenty of fans, but most that are his fans also tend to prefer his "younger incarnation", compared to how he usually looks as an old man in the main games.

Kliff is a historical figure within GG's mythos, so even if he's not that popular as-is, he's still a permanent fixture within the story.

That being said, Kliff left behind several legacies in the form of other characters: Testament, Ky Kiske, Leo Whitefang, Sol Badguy... and lesser known Tyr and Fenrir.

In terms of what players would expect out of a character like Kliff, he is very similar to Kagura Mutsuki of BlazBlue fame, so even if Kliff never shows up in the roster ever again (being deceased), it's still possible for other characters to take up the role he once played in terms of gimmicks and gameplay.

One of my personal expectations would be for someone like Tyr to inherit Kliff's massive Dragonslayer Sword... Imagine it: a young small-looking kid wielding a giant sword in much the same way Kliff used to... but there's a TWIST: Tyr has a Dragon arm on his hand and can cast powerful blasts of Magic with it, and even transform in to a Dragon-like form. Such a recast in place of Kliff would be very welcome if you ask me.

Now, for someone like Dr. Paradigm... while he's been on the sidelines for a while, that doesn't mean he's not incapable of fighting or being an interesting character.

In GG2 his role served to rely heavily on his Servants to do most of the fighting, so in that sense Paradigm probably relies heavily on assists and helpers to do the work for him (much like Captain Ginyu in Dragonball FighterZ).

Lastly, there's Justice... Justice has split in to several types of characters throughout the series: Jack-O', Elphelt, Ramlethal (Ram in particular has a unique style that invokes many of Justice old movesets), and then of course there's the lesser spoken of Happy Chaos Valentine.

Justice has always invoked some aspect of being a "final boss", so in her own way, she's not too dissimilar to Dark Susanooh in BlazBlue.

If you consider who Yuuki Terumi was, Hazama, Hakumen, and then finally Susanooh... that's one way of looking at the history of Justice as a boss character.

But there's another variant as well: Noel Vermillion (the Origin), Lambda-11, Mu-12, Nu-13, Hades Izanami, even Es... all of these are incarnations of a major godlike character.

Consider what Happy Chaos is... a "dark copy" of Jack-O'... a darker incarnation of Aria. There's a lot of foreboding in a character of this nature.

Don't say I didn't warn you... but I'm warning you: most likely there will be a "Dark" incarnation of Justice at some point. Something far more dangerous than Elphelt or Ramlethal... or even Ariels ever were as a boss character.

It's only a matter of time before more characters are revealed for GGStrive... so patience is key.

As for Fanny... I have no expectations, but her fighting style was based on Dr. Baldhead's original version before it was tweaked for GGX. If they seek to make a variation of her, that's up to them...

But, ultimately it boils down to what Ishiwatari wants to do with the game and the story, no matter how highly or how lowly fans think of the characters we've come to see at this point.

What jaune ships do you like?

Ok, so now to talk about the Jaune ships I DO like, this should be nice! Also I just want to reassure you guys, just because I like a certain ship doesn’t mean I’m calling anyone’s favorite ships inferior or anything. (That’s not what I like to do here) Already let’s get started!

10. Jaune x Penny or Circuit Breaker

I think it’s cute, gives off a robo girl likes boy feeling. Honestly reminds me a bit of the Life as a Teenage Robot cartoon I watched as a kid.

9. Jaune x Glynda or Arcwitch

The only reason I kinda dig this ship is because of my experience reading Professor Arc by Couer Al’ Aran. (Which is a super funny set up and story) Although I would only ship this if it’s in an AU where Jaune is older than his canon self.

8. Jaune x Velvet or Scarlet Knight/Bunoculars

I’ve seen a lot of fans ship these two together and I honestly don’t blame them. Usually stems from nice guy helps out bullied girl or shy girl set up. Also it makes for cute interactions.

7. Jaune x Cinder or Knightfall

I gotta say I was suprised that this ship got rated as high as it did. I’ve seen a few writers make this ship work in a redeemed Cinder story or Cinder is Jaune’s wife while also being a servant of Salem in secret. (Yes I’ve read A Monster’s Marriage, and I loved it)

6. Jaune x Nora or Nora’s Arc

This ship honestly doesn’t get much love, and it’s not hard to see why. (Renora being a staple ship for the canon series) I love to see this sometimes because it comes from how well Jaune and Nora get along. They form a very close familial bond in the series and it would be fun to see how this power couple would do.

5. Jaune x Blake or Knightshade

I like this ship because of the chemistry that fans have created for these two. We never get to see much of them interact for the most part but the fan base more than makes up for that. Plus it’s heartwarming to see this as one of the more healthier relationships Blake could have.

4. Jaune x Weiss or White Knight

Ah the classical ‘guy gets the girl of his dreams’ ships that in a way. Weiss is one of my favorite girl characters of the series and I adore how these two have grown since how they interacted in Volumes 1. This shows how much the two have matured throughout the series as a whole, in which Jaune becomes more mature and more considerate of people’s space and Weiss becomes nicer and more tolerable of his shenanigans. So good ship overall.

3. Jaune x Pyrrha or Arkos

.....Honestly looking at this ship still hurts. Because of what happened to this one was nothing less than a tragedy. I really liked this ship and was my second favorite for awhile (Still kinda is because this and another ship were battling for #2 spot) and still carries a great following. I loved they way Pyrrha was in a sense that Aerith archetype character where they were supportive to Jaune and loved him unconditionally. The bond they have is powerful and still stands when she’s gone. (Let’s get this going before I start crying on the inside)

2. Jaune x Yang or Dragonslayer

Honestly this one was a weird one for me, normally I didn’t see myself liking this ship way more than I thought I would, but I do. It mixes the nerdy kid meets cool girl, and their personalities fills in gaps where the other is lacking and works well. Where Yang is a act first, think later kind of person and where Jaune is a think first, act later type of guy. Plus their fighting styles polar each others in a fun way (Yang=Melee/Brawler vs Jaune=Support/Tank) and have the potential for great chemistry.

1. Jaune x Ruby or Lancaster 💛❤️

Now I’m sure a lot of you aren’t that surprised that this one is my favorite ship. (Icon is a dead giveaway lol) I love both of these characters dearly and they have natural chemistry because of their similar likes and goals. The way their dynamo works is very fluid and often they can trade roles almost flawlessly. The way they interact is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen and they scream couple potential.... even if it doesn’t get shown a lot, but when it shows it SHOWS! If I had to say which ship in my opinion was most likely to be canon, if would be this.

1) Do you have a favorite OC?

I’m quite attached to the children in my Embracing Entropy series. Probably because they are based on my kids. But the book is currently out of print and I have some editing to work on before finding a 2nd print run publisher for it since my previous editor dropped the ball.

2) Which WIP has changed the most? Why?

My current WIP is a monster that is weaving one hell of a spell. It’s a nonfiction spirituality book, so of course it should. It’s just a tall order and it’s drawing things out of me that I didn’t know existed.

3) Do you enjoy worldbuilding? Do you consider yourself good at it?

I love shaping worlds from nothing. It’s pulling me back and making it believable for readers that’s the problem. My fiction is all over the place, that’s why I balance it with my nonfiction.

4) Have you ever made a conlang/fictional language for a WIP

YES! The aliens in Embracing Entropy have their own language that took a lot of planning and linguistics research.

5) Do you like to keep faceclaims of your OCs? Do you find them online or draw them yourself?

No. Everything I write is kept in my brain.

6) Has anyone ever made any fanfic or fan art for you?

I had a talented instagram artist do a piece based on my short story, “Resurfacing.” He drew one of the seahorses from the scuba diving adventure and used a quote in the picture. I was so thrilled. I asked to buy it but it’s part of a sketchbook project so he was reluctant to sell haha

7) Who is your writing buddy/confidant you always come to about your work?

My husband Dash Crowley. he knows what I need to hear and how to get through to me when things get tough.

8) Big or small cast?

I read this as big or small cats haha

I let the story decide how many cast members come in. It often starts small and more characters just come in without asking. They can be very rude sometimes.

In regards to CATS, I love big and small ones. I used to work as a veterinarian for one of my area’s top zoologists so the big cats have their special place in my heart. Especially African servile, but I truly believe they should be left in the wild.

9) Were any of your characters inspired by others you saw or read about?

I don’t generally base my work on other characters. real people inspire me more.

10) Favorite trope(s)?

I used to be a sucker for tragedies, but the older I get, the more value I see in stories of redemption.

11) How do you waste time not writing?

I never waste time haha I hike, swim, dance, sing, play guitar, chase butterflies, climb trees, test out local restaurants and annoy my family. Wasting time is boring.

1. Which is your current WIP?

It’s a giant book about the magick of instinct and how humans are less domesticated than we think we are.

2. How many WIP’s do you have?

I always have a few going at one time. I currently have 3 going. The rule of 3 usually works well here.

3. If you could live in any of them, which one would it be?

I AM currently living in my major WIP and I love it.

4. How do you come up with titles for them?

I suck at titles. I usually have to beg my husband for help. He is the title master haha

5. What’s your worst writing habit / habits?

Writing until my fingers throb.

6. What’s your favorite style of writing?

First person works that were written by hand.

7. How many books do you read per year? (You can always guess)

It depends on the year. Usually about a dozen.

When Guillot is tasked with slaying the last of the dragons in Duncan M. Hamilton's Dragonslayer, the first in a planned fantasy trilogy, the character is way past his prime. All bets should be on the dragon, but a semblance of that knightly duty remains—even though Guillot struggles with alcoholism and is actively thwarted by someone high in power, there's tension in the narrative. Could Guillot actually win?

Knights and dragons -- it’s a tale as old as fiction and mythology. The traditional sort of dragon—winged, fire breathing—was popularized in the Middle Ages, the most famous story being St. George slaying the dragon. That story was immortalized in a Raphael painting, circa 1506, titled "Saint George and the Dragon," that now resides in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.

Dragons have been an enduring story and iconography throughout history. You’re hard pressed to find a culture without a dragon or dragon-like entity. Ancient China, Sumeria, Nepal, Tibet... even the Aztec had a dragon-like creature woven into their iconography. A fantastical creature possibly derived from a combination of imagination and seeing real creatures like crocodiles, or in some cases finding fossilized dinosaur bones, the dragon is something as universal as the act of telling stories.

Dragons were thought of as creatures to be overcome by the most gallant and saintly, and thus you can hardly see a story involving a knight without a scaly, fire-spouting foe. Even though the book The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, published in 1903, didn’t contain any dragons, the many variations on that tale since have often incorporated the creature as something for King Arthur’s knights to surmount. By the time we get to the BBC’s Merlin, the wise yet destructive dragon was such an important part of the narrative, he was voiced by none other than British acting icon John Hurt.

We’ve seen the image of the dragon take a decidedly friendlier turn. Perhaps the beginnings of this could be seen in Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series published in 1967. There, the series was science fiction instead of the usual fantasy, because the dragons were genetically engineered. It made McCaffrey the first women to win a Hugo Award, and spawned a rich fandom in which fans "play" Pern, creating original characters to inhabit the fictional world.

In movies, we’ve seen Pete the Dragon (1977 and 2016) and Dragonheart (1996), both unabashed family romps that basically give the character a magical best friend. The Inheritance Cycle, a book series by Christopher Paolini, also played on the dragon-riding fun, and was eventually made into a lackluster movie.

Not all dragons had to be series either. Ever read Myth Adventures by Robert Asprin, published from 1978 to 2002? Because you should. The main character has a pet dragon called Gleep who only says the word “gleep.”

History is cyclical. What’s old becomes new again. As you might have noticed, dragons have returned to popular fiction in recent years as their fearsome selves—most notably the Cumber-beast Smaug in The Hobbit, Daenerys’s besties in Game of Thrones (both adaptations of books published in 1937 and 1996, respectively.)

The kids get How to Train Your Dragon’s Toothless. The grown ups with an HBO Go password get what happens if you don’t train your dragon to be a big puppy. The shift from monster to friend to monster again—it’s paralleled in fiction's exploration of other fantastical creatures, like vampires, werewolves, etc. (I have yet to hear of any angsty sparkling dragons and, if there are some, feel free not to share them. Some things are meant to be slain.)

We’ve had fantastic stories told that resonate with an audience long after the last pages or last episodes have aired. You still hear shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad mentioned -- these shows broke down the usual expectations about gangsters and drug dealers and created quality entertainment. We’re seeing that in our fantasy and science fiction, too. A classic foe—the dragon—can return to fiction and represent an audience’s need for more than just a good guy fighting a bad monster.

Reinvention has kept old stories and concepts fresh. Take for example, the bold brash action in the Amazon Prime series The Boys. Gone are the usual tenets of a hero’s compulsion to seek justice. Instead we get a super violent, ugly view of a corporatized hero system designed to sell movies and stuff and pander to the American dream while sweeping accidental and wrongful deaths under the rug.

When speaking to Den of Geek about his creative process, author Duncan M. Hamilton explained: “For the dragons, I leaned toward real myths and legends as a starting point, then embellished to my own taste as I went.” That embellishment created more than just a monster of legend, but a being with a rich inner life that allowed the reader to take a peek inside his head for a few chapters.

In many ways, Dragonslayer represents a return to the classic story of a gallant knight riding into battle against a fire-breathing beast. What it does well is the fact that our hero is hardly suited for the task anymore, and that our dragon is even questioning his own motives. In Dragonslayer, chapters take turns seeing from Guillot the knight’s point of view, the sorceress he befriends, his human adversary, and the dragon himself. From each character’s perspective, we see their wants and needs, their motivations and the dangers they face. We empathize, even, when faced with the adversaries of the hero. Even when that adversary is a great scaly beast.

Hamilton told us: “I think being able to empathize with the dragon makes for a far more compelling story.” It does. Looking at the dragon in a new light also helps illuminate how special our protagonist is. Guillot is not a knight in shining armor. He was, once, but he’s let himself go. He’s almost reprehensible, wasting away his days as a drunkard and a nuisance to his town, languishing in his bad memories.

Guillot often bemoans his ineptitude in the beginning, even feeling guilty when the sorceress thanks him for rescuing her from certain death: “The praise made Gill feel uncomfortable. He was a drunk who had pissed his life away because things hadn’t gone his way. He thought about admitting that he had still been drunk when he’d rescued her, but couldn’t bring himself to say it.”

But when the call to action comes, he answers, even if he begrudges being out of shape and out of practice. In this way, Guillot is more like the reader than many heroes in classic fantasy stories. Once a skilled swordsman, he’s woefully out of practice, and rides forth believing full well that this could be his end.

Add to this the search for a relic that may be even more important than anyone realizes. This relic ends up having a deep significance to Guillot, something that he and his allies won’t realize right away until the pieces start falling together with each new discovery. And who happens to have that relic in their claws? I think you might see how this all ties together...

Alliances are made, promises broken, secret histories revealed—and it all revolves around the discovery of a dragon waking up from a long snooze.

Taking something old and making it new again—it’s a way to show familiar ideas but make them fresh. It’s an opportunity to explore new territory. Hamilton certainly accomplishes this in Dragonslayer.

Fuckton of OC questions: HM

Questions from @liaraliara‘s post here. Doing these for HM, will do more for other characters eventually, whether y’all want me to or not.

anyway so the prompt is clearly intended for, like, normal human OCs rather than murderous dragons, but let’s see where this goes

1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything? H.M. Deshulian. The initials stand for [DATA REMOVED], although he’s rather sensitive about anyone he doesn’t fully trust knowing that. And by “sensitive” I mean “vicious and lethal.”

2. Do they have any titles? How did they get them? At least one town calls him the Green Reaper, which he’s rather proud of, but often times, much of his antics are attributed to Dzamie, a fact that annoys both of them.

3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory? Rather average for a dragon, actually. Instead of sparring with clutchmates or playfighting with his parents, he and Dzamie would hone their skills against each other - particularly useful, as it gave Dzamie experience against a real dragon, and HM experience against a dragonslayer’s style of fighting. Regardless, he certainly didn’t go hungry, and keeping the warm-blooded and soft-furred Dzamie around kept him comfy at night (the Katul eventually got used to being used like a mattress).

4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents? Has no clue who his father is or was. His mother is definitely dead; there is no need to go looking for her, especially if you’re a dragonslayer tracking a large bounty. He will eat anyone who claims to the contrary.

5. Do they have any siblings? What’s their names? What is their relationship with them? Has their relationship changed since they were kids to adults? Dzamie’s his half-brother. They’re very close, despite what seem like occasional attempts to kill the other. The two have gotten closer since childhood, owing in part to spending most of their lives around each other and also a mental link that they often forget about.

6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate? HM associates “school” with dragonslayers, and thus doesn’t think too highly of it. He’s great at mechanical and electrical engineering, though. Not sure where he learned it.

7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood? He had approximately one friend, who happened to have spotted fur and a full set of dragonslaying gear. Other friends generally didn’t stay long or died. Being around either Deshulian is pretty dangerous, since one is a danger magnet and the other seems to seek out violence.

8. Did they have pets as a child? Do they have pets as an adult? Do they like animals? Occasionally jokes that he has a rambunctious cheetah as a pet. He likes animals! They’re usually very tasty!

9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals? He tends to terrify animals. This means their instincts are functioning well.

10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/ect? Can’t stand ‘em. Generally asks permission to maim and/or eat them after about 10 minutes of being around them, grants himself permission anyway after another 10.

11. Do they have any special diet requirements? Are they a vegetarian? Vegan? Have any allergies? 100% carnivore, ideally live, sapient food. Vegetables and grains are mildly poisonous, though a built-up resistance means they just taste bad and don’t do anything for him.

12. What is their favourite food? Dzamie.

13. What is their least favourite food? Porcupines. Far too much effort and risk for such a little reward.

14. Do they have any specific memories of food/a restaurant/meal? Nothing in particular.

15. Are they good at cooking? Do they enjoy it? What do others think of their cooking? He can stop meat from being raw, but he’s not good at making it appetizing for non-dragons.

16. Do they collect anything? What do they do with it? Where do they keep it? A nice hoard of shiny stuff - gold, gems, armor, stolen won weapons, and a few trophies with the nameplates removed that he refuses to tell anyone where he got them.

17. Do they like to take photos? What do they like to take photos of? Selfies? What do they do with their photos? Nah. Cameras are hard to work with his paws.

18. What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else He likes racing games and Smash Bros, is a fan of what he nebulously describes as “flying music,” and most any movie or book with a dragon protagonist (at least, the ones where it’s not “yeah he’s a dragon but he spends 99% of the time looking human because reasons”).

19. What’s their least favourite genres? Death metal for music, rhythm games, and soap operas. For books, it’s a tie between romance novels and historical fiction and nonfiction.

20. Do they like musicals? Music in general? What do they do when they’re favourite song comes? Theaters rarely allow dragons, especially dragons with his body count track record. Music’s definitely more Dzamie’s thing, but he’s got a few songs he likes. When a song he enjoys comes on, he’ll usually at least move his head to the beat, fall in step with it, or time his flaps to the music.

21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper? It’s pretty hard to make him truly lose his temper, but that rarely matters because “kill and possibly eat non-dragons in the immediate area” isn’t too high up on his reactions scale. When he does get truly angry, the best course of action is to either return the important hoard thing to him and pray for mercy, or to vacate the surrounding twenty miles or so immediately.

22. What are their favourite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someone’s back? He doesn’t usually see a reason to insult people. He knows where he is on the food chain.

23. Do they have a good memory? Short term or long term? Are they good with names? Or faces? He can recall every bit of treasure in his hoard, and has also memorized pretty much all of the pseudo-laws he has to follow as per the agreement with the dragonslayers’ guild. Knows it better than most actual dragonslayers, really.

24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress? Generally diurnal. Does not snore, prefers to sleep on Dzamie, part of his hoard, or a firm mattress, in that order.

25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humour? Are they funny themselves? He finds dramatic irony to be the absolute best, particularly when it involves someone underestimating him or Dzamie.

26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions? He tends to hold his head higher, and his tail swishes back and forth, or taps whatever it’s resting on if he’s lying down - though he’s careful to make sure it lands with the flat of the blade, so as not to accidentally ruin whatever he’s sitting happily on.

27. What makes them sad? Do they cry regularly? Do they cry openly or hide it? What are they like they are sad? I don’t think he’s ever actually been sad, at least for long.

28. What is their biggest fear? What in general scares them? How do they act when they’re scared? Death, so generally only an angry Dzamie or Kenneth can actually scare him. Or a literal deity, or the few dragons who are significantly stronger than he is. When scared, he pretty much throws up all the defensive spells he knows and tries to escape the situation. Also scary: seeing Dzamie running very quickly away from, not towards, something. “Tactical retreat” means the cheetah annoyed someone strong; “flat out booking it” means everything in its path is is in peril.

29. What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very over protective? Tease or exploit, depending on if he likes that person.

30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-work out and post-work out? HM likes to fly and fight rampage/slaughter, but he’s not much for structured exercise. If someone does get him to work out, he’s generally grumpy going into it and ready to set several things and/or people on fire afterwards.

31. Do they drink? What are they like drunk? What are they like hungover? How do they act when other people are drunk or hungover? Kind or teasing? Nope. Drunk firebreathers are a bad idea.

32. What do they dress like? What sorta shops do they buy clothes from? Do they wear the fashion that they like? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear makeup? What’s their hair like? He sometimes wears his wingblades, but for the most part he’s completely naked. Scales are handy.

33. What underwear do they wear? Boxers or briefs? Lacey? Comfy granny panties? Once more, quadrupedal dragons tend not to wear clothes.

34. What is their body type? How tall are they? Do they like their body? At his usual size, HM’s about 3′6″ at the shoulder, carrying his head just under 6′. If he undoes his size transformation (or it’s forcibly undone), he’s roughly two stories high. He’s very fond of every part of his body, especially his jaws (he has a very strong bite, and has paralytic saliva if he so chooses).

35. What’s their guilty pleasure? What is their totally unguilty pleasure? His guilty pleasure is letting Dzamie rub or scratch him in just the right places. He purrs for very few people. His unguilty pleasure is probably wanton destruction. Or eating Dzamie, though that involves significantly less fire.

36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing? To quote TF2′s Spy, “your deadly skill is jogging? Mine is murdering people!” Though, to HM’s credit, he really just hunts a lot; most of his kills vanish down his throat. He’s definitely fond of the whole violence thing. He can sing, to an extent. He doesn’t have the best range, and he doesn’t really compare to a human or Katul singer, but he’s better than the average dragon.

37. Do they like to read? Are they a fast or slow reader? Do they like poetry? Fictional or non fiction? He’ll read short things if Dzamie suggests them, but is otherwise uninterested.

38. What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had? Strength and fighting ability (and taste, but he doesn’t envy that). He does wish he had the quick spellcrafting of Kenneth or Dzamie’s impressive range of abilities.

39. Do they like letters? Or prefer emails/messaging? Emails. He’s accidentally incinerated too many would-be important letters to be fond of them.

40. Do they like energy drinks? Coffee? Sugary food? Or can they naturally stay awake and alert? He sees energy drinks and stuff like that to be human things. Sweet things are nice, especially when his prey is covered in it, but a fine-tuned survival instinct keeps him as awake as he generally needs to be.

41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship? Physically, 100% into dragonesses. Human women are a nice substitute, but he tends not to think highly of them (though, considering his baseline for humans is “food”...). He generally isn’t much for long-term relationships, though Dream is an exception - primarily by way of being more a friend-with-benefits than a romantic partner.

42. What are their goals? What would they sacrifice anything for? What is their secret ambition? His goal is to have a very big hoard, and possibly see if he can’t start a cult that ends up occasionally sacrificing a member to him or something. He’d sacrifice anything but Dzamie’s life to preserve his own, and anything but his own life to save Dzamie’s. His secret ambition is to be able to solidly beat Dzamie in a fight - they’ve always been pretty even.

43. Are they religious? What do they think of religion? What do they think of religious people? What do they think of non religious people? HM is not religious at all. He acknowledges the existence of some deities, generally because either he or HM has met several of them (again, some of the few times one can actually see them actively prepare many layers of backup escape plans), but isn’t interested in worshipping anyone. He’s generally neutral about most religious and nonreligious people, and hasn’t quite made up his mind about the religious ones who think he’s a demon to exorcise - on one hand, they’re annoying, on the other, they’re generally unprepared enough that they make an easy snack.

44. What is their favourite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most? Summer. Dragon likes heat. He complains about the snow a lot, and generally doesn’t leave his fuzzy heat source Dzamie’s side during the wintertime.

45. How do other people see them? Is it similar to how they see themselves? As a violent psychopath who’d probably eat the world if it was feasible and tasty enough. He’d agree.

46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves? He can make a good first impression - he’s not completely tactless, and can even hold a small Facade for a while. It’s pretty quick to tell his personality, though. HM prefers to introduce himself a couple seconds after his most recent victim dies, but, to his distaste, he far more often introduces himself in a more normal manner.

47. How do they act in a formal occasion? What do they think of black tie wear? Do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event? He can act all proper and stuff, especially if Dzamie’s nearby to give him pointers, but not for an extended period of time. He prefers to wear as little as necessary, but will put on a few things to keep up appearances when needed. He enjoys chit chat to the extent that it can lure unsuspecting prey towards a secluded area.

48. Do they enjoy any parties? If so what kind? Do they organise the party or just turn up? How do they act? What if they didn’t want to go but were dragged along by a friend? He does actually host more casual parties somewhat often. Generally, his guests are dragons, though occasionally a Serperior or a sphinx has shown up. He’s actually a pretty good host. Though, remarkably often, he and a bunch of guests end up in a scaly pile on or around Dzamie when they awake.

49. What is their most valued object? Are they sentimental? Is there something they have to take everywhere with them? Well, there’s Dzamie.

50. If they could only take one bag of stuff somewhere with them: what would they pack? What do they consider their essentials? A water bottle and as much of his favorite non-Dzamie things from his hoard as will fit. Everything else necessary can be found pretty easily, especially as a flying, magical dragon.

Fair Warning, below the line are spoilers. If you’ve not watched the episode yet (which you probably have) then do not read below the line. Else wise - this is my ‘live’ blog of T6T (aka, my comments and thoughts as I am watching).

Fair Warning 2, there’s a lot surrounding John that I don’t like and I get kind of angry about it. Like, a lot angry.

SO – A brief reflection of the episode.

So, all in all it wasn’t as terrible as I was expecting. I don’t lie when I say I hate Moffat. He convolutes things and leaves plot holes galore. He has this way of leaving POC out of his work and being a general twat about LGBT. The episode was well done.

I’m a bit rusty, of course, and feel poorly about my ability to foretell the events of the episodes as well as I have in the past. (I’ve not read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories).

Back to content, I think they humanized Sherlock in a beautiful way – and it did seem OOC but it was OOC in the right way. Transitions always feel off and ill-placed. We as people have to make changes and it shows, we are always uncomfortable in the early stages of change – doubtful of ourselves. So Sherlock’s OOC nature was not a problem for me.

But John… I don’t like what is happening with him. I don’t like the shady affair business. I don’t like him deferring and submitting to Mary and Sherlock. I don’t like his shutting Sherlock out for something that wasn’t even his fault. JOHN TOLD MARY TO GO – and were John there he’d have done exactly as Mary did. John is a smart man, emotional to boot, but intelligent and reasonable. Whatever is happening with his character reeks of poor writing. I’m not particularly excited to see what becomes of his character.

This may be the season that taints Johnlock for me – as a friendship or otherwise.

This episode made me appreciate Mary more, and I hadn’t liked her at all. Not because she was a bad character or anything. I didn’t like her for John, it never felt right. But now – I have a lot of respect for her because she did give John the option of knowing what she came from. He chose not to know. So I feel she’d been fairly transparent from that point on. I don’t agree with her choices but she clearly was trying harder that I believed prior to the whole random affair that had 0% purpose to the story.

IT DID NOT BELONG.

And Molly, she’s cold. She felt off. She’ll bit at Sherlock for being a git, but it’s almost like she’s eaten up this false story of Sherlock being a villain – some poppycock John is surely spouting off in his fits of rage. And John has those, those complaints about Sherlock and his work and his flaws… But nothing that would convince anyone he genuinely hates Sherlock. This just…

I feel like Sherlock has gained some humanity to appease those around him, but not the people around him have decided “Just kidding, we’re still over it.” Like, I don’t know. Maybe I’m seeing through a lens that holds Sherlock on high… But these characters are turning on him, it feels, right? Not like in season two when Moriarty ripped apart his reputation – but genuine friends turning their back to him.

Like I said, I know people reach a point where they can give no more tolerance. There is a point in time where we can’t give any more of ourselves to a toxic person or a toxic relationship; and it is good to walk away when it becomes an issue for him. But I cannot believe that is what is happening.

And return to the point of John’s affair.

What poor writing – unless it gets addressed in the next episode.

Sherlock didn’t hint to knowing.

Mary didn’t hint to knowing. If anyone would know – those two would know.

And I don’t feel confidently any lines in this episode suggest that either Mary or Sherlock actually know. I had my theory that Sherlock did know and was encouraging John (or rather protecting Mary by keeping her busy – he did seem more protective and invested in Mary than John this episode, and he’s even been someone inclined towards Mary over John in the past in one way or another).

That’s the sort of stuff that bothers me about projects Moffat is associated with… There’s also something missing that makes the project feel wrong. Incomplete. Wrong.

As for the plot – it was nice to have more about Mary revealed. It was nice to not be delving right back into the Moriarty business. It’s also nice to have more domesticity in the show – a way to keep older characters relevant who don’t feel quite as important anymore with the case searching that Sherlock does on his own. And there didn’t even need to be a compromise to the content that people actually watch Sherlock for: a mystery.

If I had to give this work a grade or a rating – I think I’ll give is a solid A- or 8/10.

It’s hard to say for sure because I couldn’t read all the text because of my live blogging and details surely went unnoticed. For now I’m pretty impressed. It exceeded my expectations but didn’t completely “wow” in any way except this affair nonsense that will eat away at me for the rest of all eternity.

Will Olaffub gets his own entrance to no music and a chorus of cheers which is completely bizarro. But that’s the Hammerstein Ballroom for you!

Eddie Edwards enters first as the challenger to a big reaction. A “Fuck him up Eddie fuck em up *clap clap*” chants that resonates throughout the Ballroom. Edwards salacious smile as he feels he has home turf. Edwards even starts jaw jacking with Casey Alfonso sitting in the front row.

Jake Awesome enters to a mixed reaction. Chants of “Fuck Jake Awesome” clashing with “Awesome Sucks”

Awesome even stops halfway down the aisle way to notice a fan in full on Captain Falcon gear

M1: XPWEW World Heavyweight Title

Sixty Minute Ironman Match

Jake Awesome (c) vs Eddie Edwards

Creative chants throughout this match go:

After 27 minutes of action Awesome gets his Awesome Bomb countered as Edwards absorbs the impact and rolls hum into a crossface and Awesome taps out

Edwards is up 1-0 with 33 minutes to go

About 8 minutes later Awesome connects a big splash for the top and a slow pinfall gets him the 1-2-3

It’s now tied 1-1 with 25 minutes left

19 minutes pass without a fall and Edwards starts to show his desperation and tells Olaffub to hit awesome with a weapon, it’ll get him disqualified and cost him a point but maybe he can catch up and make it even before time expires. Will Olaffub hits Awesome with a steel chair and it doesn’t even phase Awesome and the ref awards a point to Jake for that DQ making it 2-1 Jake up; Casey Alfonso gets fed up with Ollafub’s subtle remarks to him at ringside the whole night and he jumps the rail and tackles Ollafub and starts to wail on him and Jake pulls him off but the ref deducts a point from Jake as a DQ making it 1-1 now after all that about 5 minutes remain. Edwards starts to get some chain Olympic style wrestling on Jake to make the time expire but Jake starts to outwrestle him quite a bit and somehow Edwards locks in the crossface with about 2:35 left. Awesome powers out and lifts up to his feet meanwhile Edwards still has his crossface haphazardly allpied Jake drops him outside onto the thin mat outside the ring. Jake goes to the ropes, Suicide Dive connects and Jake rolls Edwards in the ring Edwards seems done, Jake covers 1-2 KICKOUT! 40 seconds remain and Jake hits a quick awesome bomb and this time that’s enough for the 1-2-3. Jake then dumps Edwards out to the outside of the ring landing on the exposed concrete and Edwards can’t get up as 19 seconds slowly expire. Awesome wins 2-1 and still the XPWEW World Heavyweight Champion

Winner: Jake Awesome 2-1

Awesome celebrates and begins a proper Hey Hey Hey Nah Nah Nah Nah goodbye chant. Edwards scowls at Jake and walks off with the crowd hitting him with that chant. The crowd play made this seemingly long match a lot more enjoyable. Well paced

Those odds aren’t great but I always have a plan A, Plan B even C.

M3: Champagne Clausen defeats GG with no help from the Freight Train which was a huge criticism from General Manager Romeo Roselli. Curt wins both falls in the contest 2-0 over GG! Freight Train comes out and nervously asks for the mic, Troy graciously gives him the mic, sure Freight Train you are apart of the family. What did you want to say? Post Match Interview Champagne Clausen pops a bottle of Champagne and says his little sister Regina Clausen is going to become the women’s champ tonight!

M4: Chris Johnson defeats Dragon Kid and he’s now the #1 contender for the XPWEW Juniorweight Title (current champion Based Fabian)

Interview: Nick Simmonds is joined by Slayer. Slayer says this match is over a decade in the making. I’ve been wanting to see the myth that is John Moxley in that ring for so long. Ruckus & Lexoni defeat Vinny Testaverde & Rondo in a bloodbath. Easily one of the best matches for Free Agency as a team.

nZo blood smeared in his face tried to talk but this Hammerstein Ballroom crowd can’t let him get a word in without some creative chants; “you may have won the battle but you smucks have not won the war”. Ruckus and Lexoni laugh it off holding their titles in the air!

Priscilla Kelly retains the title defeating Regina Clausen and Audrey Carbine

Closing sequence Priscilla Kelly puts her tampon in Regina’s mouth causing Regina to forfeit. Curt Clausen tries to interfere and Audrey applies the art of ballistics on him and while she’s got the armbar applies Priscilla comes off the top rope with a steel chair straight to the face. Stuns her! Priscilla pins Audrey 1-2-3 for the win! The crowd goes insane! Priscilla is really over here!

Backstage: Troy Clausen is banging on the door of General Manager Romeo Roselli! Jocelyn Washington jumps the rail and tries to wake up Golden Bryce and Brodie Croyle grabs her and hits her with the Silent Echo and crowd pops huge. Croyle scales the ladder, Leonard McGraw tips the ladder slowly backward and Croyle does a sick no look bump falling onto A table. Unbelievable spot!!!! Leonard McGraw goes to climb the ladder (Dragon Kid and Ms. Ryu cheering him on, he hesitates to climb and Dragon Kid gives him the mask and he puts it on but that might of spent too much time because when he grabs the case up top he’s hit by some powder - like substance by this bust blonde woman wearing a milk man? I guess milk woman suit. The powder was a little distracting but then she pulls a flourscent light tube out of a belt holster and nails McGraw across the back. McGraw drops like a sack of potatoes and All Man in a raven taunt slump in the corner gets lifted up by this female and hoists him on the ladder, All Man regains consciousness enough to speed up the ladder and he unlocks the hook and wins the case Your Luck Ladder match! All Man is Mr. Case Your Luck

Winner: All Man thanks to a busty blonde female in a milk woman outfit. Who turns out to be Emma from WWE under a new name

After the match: Crowd is boo-ing throwing garbage and trash and this female grabs the mic and excitedly announces herself as Emma, Tenille Dashwood she is the ALL WOMAN!!

All Man and All Woman Walk up the ramp with smiles on their faces and they look at the entrance setup with basically a tribute to the All Man and they give each other this look and go to the right side and pull down a curtain to reveal a giant poster of All Woman as well. Great moment. What a debut. Show Ends

Bookshelf Briefs 3/26/18

Blue Morning, Vol. 7 | By Shoko Hidaka | SuBLime – Encouraged by Akihito to pursue his own individual ambitions for once, Katsuragi becomes determined to save the workers at the spinning mill he briefly had charge of, and most of this volume depicts his plans to wrest control of the mill from a powerful ally without jeoparding said ally’s support of Akihito. It’s interesting, but of course the most important thing is Katsuragi finding something he really wants to do that does not involve serving the Kuze family. After a volume that’s 95% chaste, he finally travels to the remote villa where Akihito is recuperating and, okay, yes, they totally get it on. It’s not just smut, though; there is so much love between these men. Mutual respect, the sincere wish for other to find happiness and fulfillment… Blue Morning continues to be something special. – Michelle Smith

DNA Doesn’t Tell Us, Vol. 1 | By Mintarou | Seven Seas – Now that Monster Girls have become the new trend, it’s perhaps inevitable that we’ll get Animal Girls along with it. And so we get this series, which has animals spontaneously turning into human girls for no real reason. (Yes, always girls.) They’re still basically animals, though, so they go to a school to learn how to be human. This first volume follows the “tame” animals through the eyes of Youko, a Bighorn Sheep who is a bit more together and sensible than the rest of her goofy classmates. This edges towards the ‘fanservicey’ edge of the spectrum, but is essentially harmless, and didn’t really bother me too much. That said, I’d only recommend it to fans of animal girls—there’s nothing beyond that. – Sean Gaffney

Dragon Half, Vol. 1 | By Ryusuke Mita | Seven Seas – Before reading the first Dragon Half omnibus, I only knew the series by name, mostly due to the fans of the anime adaptation from the early 1990s. The manga itself was originally serialized between 1988 and 1994. Dragon Half is a ridiculous, absurd, and incredibly silly blast from the past. As a gag manga heavily inspired by fantasy and role-playing games, the series has its fair share of powerful, scantily clad women, including the titular half-dragon Mink. The daughter of a red dragon and a famous swordsman, Mink is on a quest to become human so that she can win the love of the dragonslayer (and teen idol), Dick Saucer. While I was amused from the very beginning, it wasn’t until about halfway through the omnibus that Mita’s sense of humor really started to click with me. The comedy can be a little hit-or-miss, but at it’s best, Dragon Half is hilarious. – Ash Brown

The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún, Vol. 4 | By Nagabe | Seven Seas – There are many scenes in this volume of The Girl from the Other Side that elicit a pang of empathy. There’s Shiva, feeling so bad for lying to Auntie about having been touched by an Outsider. There’s Auntie, gradually losing her memory of her humanity and revealing to Teacher that the worst part about the curse is that after it fully takes hold the afflicted can’t die, putting a new spin on humans killing those who are only suspected of having been exposed. And there’s Teacher, watching Shiva and Auntie together and concluding that the girl no longer needs him, that it’d make no difference if he was around or not, and that perhaps he’s harming her by trying to keep her close. At least Shiva has other ideas about that, but it’s hard to see how a happy ending is going to be possible for this story. – Michelle Smith

Horimiya, Vol. 10 | By Hero and Daisuke Hagiwara | Yen Press – We don’t seem any closer to wrapping up, but there is a bit more forward progress here, though anyone expecting a straightforward answer to last volume’s proposal may be disappointed. Instead, the reader can enjoy seeing the over-serious Sengoku dealing with the pangs of love, and his conversation with Remi is also something of a proposal in a way, spoken through the plots of books. I enjoyed it. There’s also a nice helping of humor here, as we see Sengoku’s dad was friends with the Horis—and is not fond of that fact. We also see Hori’s dad with his hair up, and I straight up did not recognize him at first. We seem to be back on an upswing, and I’m looking forward to more. – Sean Gaffney

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Four-Panel Comic: Days of Goddess | By Masaya Takamura and Fujino Omori | Yen Press – These sorts of spinoffs are all over the place in Japan, but we rarely see them over here. It’s exactly what you’d expect—the DanMachi story told as 4-koma gags with the cast in superdeformed mode. Since it’s “Days of Goddess,” we follow Hestia more than Bell, as she struggles to get by despite only having one follower. It’s sort of nostalgic given how far the series has come since then. The other early cast members appear as well, though given Ais’ running gag of always eating, you’ll wonder if the author confused her with Saber. There’s another volume in the fall—twice a year seems about right for this cute and funny spinoff. – Sean Gaffney

Kemono Friends: Welcome to Japari Park!| By Fly and Kemono Friends Project | Yen Press – Sadly, this is one of those series where the real-life travails of the franchise prove to be far more interesting than the manga that came out of it. Based on an unsuccessful mobile game that got an anime that was VERY successful… until it blew up… the manga concerns a young woman named Nene, who is hired to essentially be a zookeeper for various young animal girls who are able to talk to humans and are basically eccentric young women with animal characteristics. Cute ensues. This volume contains both volumes of the original series, and as such wears out its welcome quite fast—series this fluffy should not be omnibuses. If you really like Kemono Friends, get this. – Sean Gaffney

Land of the Lustrous, Vol. 5 | By Haruko Ichikawa | Kodansha Comics – Although the narrative as a whole remains somewhat ambiguous, Land of the Lustrous continues to be one of the most visually striking series currently being released in English. With world-building and character introductions happening in fits and starts, the manga tends to favor mood and style over an obvious, logical narrative, but the melancholic atmosphere that Ichikawa has created with the manga is a compelling one. There is an intensity of emotion that makes it feel as though the gems’ psyches are as precariously close to shattering as their physical manifestations. Phos, the manga’s lead, has suffered immense trauma over the course of the series and has transformed dramatically as a result. However, as more is revealed about the characters and world, it becomes clear that Phos isn’t the only one hiding both secrets and pain. I’m still incredibly intrigued by Land of the Lustrous. – Ash Brown

Nameless Asterism, Vol. 1 | By Kina Kobayashi | Seven Seas – The premise of this sweet but deliberately frustrating series is that all of the main cast are in unrequited love with someone else in the main cast, and none of it ever goes anywhere. As such, it can be a bit teeth-grinding to see everyone confess over and over in their head but not do anything. A lot of the unrequited relationships are between girls, which explains some of the angst—indeed, one of the girls who goes on about all the boys she dates and talks about how that’s “normal, right” is possibly in the most transparent closet I’ve ever seen in any media. It’s decently written, and the kids are all likeable, but I have to admit that the volume did not really do anything for me. Still, if you like frustrating yuri. – Sean Gaffney

The Young Master’s Revenge, Vol. 1 | By Meca Tanaka| Viz Media – An unfortunate trend of most Meca Tanaka series that I read is that I enjoy them while also having very little to say about them, and that’s the case here. The premise is also remarkably similar to Masamune-kun’s Revenge, another series licensed over here, but fortunately the core audience are almost total opposites. Our hero was traumatized by an unthinking childhood friend when he was a kid. He returns, as a gorgeous rich teen, to make her fall for him and then dump her, as a somewhat petty revenge. Sadly, she’s no longer rich. Also sadly, she’s cute, plucky and adorable, and he rapidly finds himself falling for her for real. This fits the Shojo Beat line admirably, though I wasn’t wowed. – Sean Gaffney
