summary: You'd been in the same class as Regina George since kindergarten. You'd lived on the same street even longer. Once upon a time, when life was sandbox disputes and who got the swing first arguments, you'd even been friends. Now, in junior year of high school, you doubted she even remembered you. The same couldn't be said about you. You definitely remembered her.

Making the scrapbook was cathartic. Remembering the good times, the innocence of your childhood, was as much of a joy as it was painful. The pictures were all quite good quality since Abuela had had a film camera. Some photos had been taken with a digital camera, which had probably originally belonged to the Georges and ended up in your possession somewhere along the way.
Regina and yourself playing in the Georges' backyard and swimming in their pool, beaming smiles directed at the camera. You could almost hear the laughter. I miss when we used to be able to just have fun together like this. I guess it's a part of growing up.
Regina in a white frilly dress, carrying a small basket of flower petals, donning a crown of roses on her head. She was pouting, clearly unimpressed by the whole thing. You hadn't been at the wedding since it was a George event, but Regina's mom had been so elated her daughter had gotten to be the flower girl. I remember I was so jealous you got to go to a wedding and I couldn't. You hated it, though, which was funny. You used to leave the room whenever your mom insisted we watch the tape. I wonder if she still has it.
You sitting with Regina, hip to hip, on plastic chairs while a newlyborn Kylie slept in your laps. Regina, eyes stuck on her baby sister and a thoughtful look on her face, while you looked at the camera with a smile. She's growing up so fast. Don't think I don't know you care about her. There's gonna be a time you'll regret not spending time with her. I already feel it.
Mrs George, Abuela, Regina, Kylie in her mom's arms, and you grouped together at a parking lot. You and Regina had on little graduation gowns and had scrolls in your hands. Elementary school graduation. The summer before middle school. End of an era. I love your mom's clothes, they're so nineties. Does she still have those jeans? You should get ahold of them before somebody else does...
Remember when I sliced my hand open when we were peeling apples? That was a time for sure. I still have the scar!
You taped pictures onto the pages, wrote little things here and there, hoping the labour of your love wouldn't end up in the garbage. Or if it did, Regina would read skim through it first.
I think this album was the first time we agreed on music. Britney Spears really brought us together, huh? We even learned the choreography of Baby One More Time. Mrs George loved it. I bet there's a video of that somewhere.
Mostly the scrapbook was filled with anecdotes about your childhoods together. You did write a letter of sorts on the first page, regarding your intentions with the whole thing.
I made this for you to commemorate the good times we had. You know me regrettably well, so I think you know how I tend to hold onto things. I still have that gaudy pink Build-A-Bear you made me for Valentine's Day that one time. It's one of my most important possessions, only second to the memories we have together. You'll always be a friend to me, Reggie. If not forever, or from now on, then back then. I love you. Yours, Jorts.
You'd pretty much finished the whole thing by the end of the weekend. You spent Monday and Tuesday decorating the front cover, mostly because you purposefully put it off. You cut out letters from magazines and glued them there, painstakingly forming the words Reggie & Jorts. You'd tried to come up with something clever, but making a pun or a dumb joke felt like cheapening the whole album. A simple name made up for with fabulous decorations!
You weren't much of a painter, but you figured it'd be fitting if the album reflected its contents. It was fine if the roses you painted looked like a five-year-old did them. A good majority of the pictures featured you and Regina huddled around a crafts table, similar projects scattered all around you, young with clumsy hands but filled with artistic passion.
The album in itself was an earthy green colour, something Regina undoubtedly found ugly. The flowers brightened it up somewhat, but there was only so much ages-old acrylic paints could do. You outlined some with Sharpies. If you didn't know better, one could assume it looked like that on purpose.
You took it with you to school on Wednesday. You had it weighing your backpack down the whole day. You sweated under all your layers, and by the end of it, you were sure you were sporting some epic pit stains. Gross, but you were so nervous. You hadn't broken into anyone's locker in so long. And it was Regina George's locker.
You loitered around the hallways as they emptied out steadily, people heading home or off to extracurriculars. As you approached Regina's locker, you swallowed down your nervousness and got to work.
It wasn't hard. The combination locks were all old and weak, more of a formality than an actual barrier between one's stuff and a burglar. The lock clicked open easily and you wasted no time in stuffing your album inside.
"Hey!" Just as the resounding click of the lock going back into place came, a voice called out to you. "What are you doing with Regina's locker?"
"Uhh..." Gretchen Wieners stood at the intersection of hallways, hands on her hips and accusatory eyes burning holes in you. You made the swift decision that you did not have time for this. You booked it.
"Hey! Get back here!" Gretchen, surprisingly considering her heels, started after you. "What did you put in it? You cannot prank Regina, or- or, oh, was it a bomb?"
"It's not a bomb!" You shouted over your shoulder, sprinting towards the exit. The aggressive clacking of Gretchen's heels on the floors as she ran after you would surely haunt your nightmares. How could she even keep up with you?
"If it's not a bomb then what!" How was she closing in on you? It seemed like she was not even fazed by your little race, meanwhile, you were already winded. The exit was not that far away, but it felt like miles.
"It's Regina's business now! Ask her tomorrow at school or something!" The doors to freedom approached. "Stop chasing me!"
"Stop running!"
"No!"
You burst out and quickly hopped down the stairs, two at a time. Gretchen was still on your tail, but once she got to the top of the stairs shouted: "Karen! Tackle her!"
You hadn't even noticed Karen fucking Shetty. There was no not noticing her when the girl sprinted at you with perfect athletic form and squashed you like a linebacker.
You collided and flew into the snow. Better than the concrete of the footpath but it still hurt like a bitch.
"Get off of me!" You tried to get out from under her, but Karen was surprisingly dense. She was small but it was as if there were stones in her body instead of organs. "Fuck!"
"Keep her there, Karen, very good."
"Thanks!" Karen beamed, which was a much more common expression on her than the bloodlust she'd shown earlier.
"This has nothing to do with you." You snarled, still wriggling. "This is between Regina and me."
"Whatever's between Regina is between us," Gretchen said, all hoity-toity. "Now, tell me exactly what you put in her locker."
"A fucking photo album." You hissed, closing your eyes and clenching your jaw. What lie could you come up with? "Our families used to know each other. It's mostly pictures of her, so I just thought to... Return it."
"Oh, that's so nice!" Karen's hold loosened and you went to escape.
"Nuh-uh, not good enough." Just like that, Karen's weight slammed back down onto you. Your breath wooshed out of your lungs.
"What more do you want?" You wheezed out, getting sick and tired of this.
"Why was it in your possession?"
"I don't fucking know! It just was!"
"Hmm. And why couldn't you just give it to her?"
"You think that would've gone well, Gretchen? Seriously?" You turned your head with great effort, staring up at the girl. "Please, just let me go."
"I don't think I believe you." Gretchen squatted next to your head. "We're going back and checking it's what you say it is. And then you might be free to go."
"Fuck you." You hissed but made no move to book it when Karen hauled you up.
"That's not very nice." Karen pointed out.
"I don't want to be nice to Gretchen right now." You had no real issue with Karen, even if she had just tackled you.
"Oh, okay." You couldn't see her when she was holding your wrists behind your back, but you could imagine she was bobbing her head up and down like she was known to do.
You were walked back into the building, going mostly without a fight. Gretchen strutted along proudly as if capturing you was some great victory. Regina had trained her well. You weren't sure if that was impressive or just sad.
"Open it." Gretchen gestured once you were back at Regina's locker.
"I need my hands to do that." You helped out, smiling at Gretchen like she was stupid. Sputtering and offended, she instructed Karen to let go.
Instead of running like you should've, taking the chance you could get out if Karen didn't get a one-up on you, you obediently cracked the code again. Was it selfish that you kind of wanted others to know about you and Regina? Was it totally horrible of you to want to know it was real and have proof of that? Well, if it was, there was no helping it.
Gretchen snatched the album from the locker before you could even think to touch it. Karen sidled up to her, peering over her shoulder as she opened it.
You stood by, waiting for their judgement and looking at the ceiling. There'd been a water leak right there, based on the discolouration. Gross.
"You... You're J. J is for Jorts." Gretchen said. She sounded weird, like hollow or something. "J is for Jorts." She said again, breathy and disbelieving.
"What?" What the fuck was going on?
Karen spoke then. "She talks about J a lot. Like, a lot a lot. A whole lot." You nodded slowly as Karen went on. "J's like, her true love. It's so cute."
"J is not her true love, Karen! They are both girls." Gretchen pointed out. You had to agree. "Are they?" She looked you up and down judgementally.
"Yes. I am a girl." You said. It was true, you were female and around the age that it was acceptable to be referred to as a girl. Even so, it made you distinctly uncomfortable.
"Hmm." Gretchen didn't seem to believe you. Karen was busy cooing at the pictures of small Regina. It was sheer luck they hadn't bothered to read your writings.
"Look, can I go now? I know I'm busted, you're probably gonna confiscate the album, and Regina will never see it. Happy?"
"No. Karen, please put it back in the locker." Gretchen said, not taking her eyes off of you. Karen did as asked with a pout. "What is your relationship with Regina?" The album was back in the locker, but it hadn't been locked again.
"Nothing." And that was true. There was nothing there anymore.
"That's a lie and you know it. If you're J, then you've known each other at least since middle school. Based on the pictures, even longer."
"Who is J?" You asked in exasperation.
"Somebody who she has protected for years now. Somebody who is always better than we could ever be." Gretchen pointed between herself and Karen. "J is important to her."
"Okay, well, good for J, I guess."
"You're so infuriating." Gretchen sighed, pinching the skin between her eyes.
"You aren't the first to tell me that."
"Of course, because Regina has said that to you. Because you've known each other forever. Because you're J."
"Listen, I may look a bit butch, but I have a perfectly ordinary girl name."
"That is not the point!" She spoke fast and high-pitched. "You. It's you. You've been under our noses this entire time! Do you realize how much easier things could've been if you were around?"
"Excuse me?" Now, you were really lost.
"You're excused," Karen said cheerfully. You nodded to her in thanks.
"We could never be as good as you. It was like we were placeholders for the ultimate pretty girl she'd somehow let slip. And it's you. In a flannel and hoodie, ratty jeans, dirty shoes, no fashion sense to speak of. It's you." She said that last part with contempt.
You were reeling. Regina had talked about you to these two. Had compared them to you, cited that you were better. For years she'd done that. She'd never forgotten about you.
"Look, Gretchen, I'm sorry Regina's treated you badly." You'd lost the need to defend her, even still. Then again, even if you hadn't, there was little you could argue about with the two she'd tormented the most. "You can probably tell this is something Regina doesn't want coming out."
"What does that matter?" Gretchen asked, eyes far away and legs beginning to pace. "We could- could finally bring her down. Yes. We have J, we have everything she wants. She'll come grovelling."
You took a deep breath. You didn't feel angry, you were too tired to get angry at mean girls at this point. Besides, nobody could rile you up like Regina.
"You're wrong." You put it plainly. "What Regina's been doing to these people, to everyone around her, is wrong. But what I find despicable is how everybody is the same. I know her reasons, I can sympathise with her, but I can't say the same for you. So tell me." You paused to take a deep breath. "Why?"
"I'm not good at riddles, I'm sorry." Karen said, looking genuinely apologetic.
"It's okay, Karen, Gretchen can answer for you both."
"She deserves it." Gretchen said, steel in her tone.
"You sound just like Cady Heron and Janis 'Imi'ike. She hurt them too. What do you think ruining her life will achieve?"
"I'll be the new Regina George."
"Do you hear yourself? You still idolize her. If you're gonna be the new Regina George, it's always going to be a Regina George world. Don't you want to be Gretchen Wieners?"
"No!" She screeched. "Gretchen Wieners is lame, boring, too eager, a slut, desperate-" She took a deep breath.
"Okay." You said. "Why? Because Regina said so? Why would you believe her? She's just the same as you. Look," You pulled the album back out.
"Here we're in the Georges' pool. She would not go to the deep end. Y'know, she refused to even go in without those arm floaties for the longest time. Eventually, some boy made fun of her for them and that was the last time.
"And in this one we're driving back from summer camp. Regina was already tall enough to go without a booster seat, but I wasn't. She'd just thrown the biggest tantrum 'cause Mrs George didn't allow her to take off her seatbelt to sleep. She went out like a light, anyway.
"We're in Six Flags there. We'd just gotten those ice creams and you can see that Regina's isn't sticking to the cone all that well. Right after the shot, it just slid off. Regina was inconsolable. I offered her mine so we could share, and that seemed to be good enough for her but her dad was not having it. He threatened to take us home if she didn't stop crying right then, that it'd be all her fault that their whole family wasted money and time on this stupid trip. Eventually she calmed down and Mr George didn't have to drive us back."
You sighed. "I already tried this with Janis, in a way. I don't think Regina would appreciate me airing out her personal life like this, but... I don't know..." You closed your eyes for a moment. "I just want people to stop making things worse for her. She's been so wrong for so long, and I know I can't keep defending her, but I just don't think revenge will make her regret anything that she's done."
Karen hummed. "My auntie's been teaching me about karma. So, like, if she feels what she's made others feel, then won't that like... Fix her?"
"I don't want to hurt her." You said, resolute. "Maybe, it could be the most effective way to make her see her shortcomings. But I don't want to. I do not want to hurt her." You looked between the two. "And that's where we differ, I guess."
Gretchen didn't say anything, eyes glued to a picture from the Six Flags trip. Regina had mustard and ketchup smeared all over her face while she was holding a napkin to your lips, in the process of wiping your face.
With that, you snatched the album from her hands, deposited it back into the locker and slammed it shut. The lock clicked. Without a word, you began to talk towards the exit. Neither of them followed you or said anything to you.
You couldn't stop people from taking their revenge. You had done your best to be diplomatic. Evoking sympathy in hormonal teenagers wasn't something easily done, or maybe you were just shitty at it, but there was little else you could do. If you went ahead and retaliated, hurt them for hurting someone you cared about, the lines blurred.
You'd just be another mean girl.
Notes: Sorry for the delay! The next chapter will be the last one, unless I start rambling or something. After that, I'll do a less structured series of epilogues. Loosely related oneshots, that kinda vibe.
Also, my writing assistant stopped working in the middle of this, so if there's stupid typos I'll come fix them later.

The Importance of Amae in My Personal Weatherman
Masterlist || Language Analysis Part 1
I have seen a lot of discourse in the English-speaking fandom surrounding Segasaki's apparent dismissal or trivializing of Yoh's desire to pursue his manga, and most of it is negative. His comments about wanting Yoh to remain dependent on him, or that Yoh does not need to earn money are seen as patronizing or controlling at best and oppressive at worst. It appears that Segasaki does not understand nor respect Yoh's need for independence, and that is what strains their relationship.
But what if I asked you to consider that Segasaki's behaviour is actually an invitation to Yoh to reinforce their relationship? And what if I told you that Yoh's withdrawal from Segasaki constitutes a rejection of that invitation, and it is that rejection that strains their relationship instead?
Of course, the end result is the same - a strained relationship - and in reality there is never one side wholly responsible for this. The point of this is to simply challenge the cultural notion that a successful relationship is the coming together of two equally independent individuals, as opposed to the co-creation of a relationship formed by two interdependent individuals.

This isn't about Segasaki wanting to keep Yoh is helpless and dependent on him, but about wanting Yoh to be able to be true to his feelings and express his own desire for affection honestly, without having to hide behind "I hate you" or rejection.
Or, let's try and talk about how Segasaki and Yoh reinforce their relationship through the use of amae (featuring a brief mention of tatemae/honne) who am I kidding this is not brief at all
First: Cultural Context
The way people conceptualize and make meaning of the Self differs between Western and East Asian cultures, and this plays into the differences we see in the basis for our self-esteem, the personal attributes that we value, and even what constitutes the behavior of a mature individual. Broadly speaking, Western cultures tend towards the Independent Self Construal (whereby the Self is a distinct entity separate from others) whereas East Asian cultures tend towards Interdependent Self-Construal (whereby the Self is connected to and defined by relationships with others). Thus, in the West, expressing one's individuality is very important for one's self-esteem, and being able to communicate clearly and confidently is valued and a sign of maturity. Conversely, in the East, one's ability to integrate and become a member of the group is prized, and contributes significantly to one's self esteem. In order to be seen as a mature individual, one must learn not only to read a social situation but also how to modify one's behavior in order to respond to the changing demands of that situation, with the ultimate goal being to maintain group harmony.
tl;dr - In East Asian culture, behaviors and attitudes that emphasize interdependence and promote group harmony actually play a big role in reinforcing relationships and one's membership towards the group.
Segasaki is an expert at this - his "public mode" that Yoh refers to actually shows us how good he is at social interactions. This is the Japanese concept of tatemae/honne (crudely translated as public self/private feelings) - which I could link to a bunch of articles for you, but I'm going to suggest you check out this 9 min street interview instead. At 6:41, one of the interviewees comments that another is sunao, or "honest" (we'll cover this later too) and at 6:49 specifically talks about how reading situations is important as an adult. Segasaki reads the room well, but most importantly, he reads Yoh well.
Yoh is not good at this, at all. In Ep 6, we see that he does not integrate well with the group, and he doesn't realize how he might appear to others when he stares and sketches from afar. Yoh does not read the room well because he doesn't pick up on social cues and does not adhere to social norms (I'll point these out in Ep 6's corrections). He cannot read Segasaki, and especially cannot read Segasaki's amae, or his attempts at reinforcing their relationship. Part of this is because his low self-esteem causes him to withdraw from Segasaki's affection as a means of self-protection, and so he valiantly tries to deny his feelings for Segasaki. As Man-san commented in Ep 4, Yoh is not sunao - he has difficulty with being true/honest about his feelings, even to himself.
Sunao is another term that usually pops up when talking about feelings/relationships. It can be used to describe one's relationship with oneself, as well as the relationship with another/group. With oneself, it is usually used to mean "being honest/truthful/straightforward/frank/open-minded about one's feelings". With another person/group, it is usually used to mean "to cooperate/listen/be obedient, or "to be humble/open-minded". In essence, the word encompasses an ideal virtue that is often taught from early childhood - that we should treat both ourselves and others with humility and honesty, because that is how we accept ourselves and stay in harmony with other. This is what becoming an adult, or gaining maturity, means (not gaining independence, as adulthood is often equated to in the West - do you see a running theme here 😂). Of course, that's actually really hard to do, so you'll often hear children (and immature adults too) chided for "not being sunao" (this can therefore sound patronizing if you're not careful). We'll revisit this in a little bit.
Second: What is Amae?
Amae is a key component in Japanese relationships, both intimate and non-intimate. It happens every day, in a variety of different interactions, between a variety of different people. But it is often seen as strange or weird, and those unfamiliar with the concept can feel uncomfortable with it. This stems from the difference in self-construal - because independence is tied so strongly to an individual's self-image in the West, it is very hard to fathom why behavior that emphasizes interdependence could be looked upon favorably. It is telling that every possible English translation of the word "amae" carries a negative connotation, when in Japanese it can be both negative or positive. The original subtitles translated it as "clingy", for example. Other common translations include "dependence", "to act like a child/infant", "to act helpless", "to act spoiled", "coquettish", "seeking indulgence", "being naive" etc.

*Note - the word "presumed" or "presumption" or "expectation" or "assumption" used in the above definition and in the rest of this post, can give the impression that all of amae is premeditated, which adds a calculative component to this concept. Whilst amae can indeed be used in a manipulative manner (benign or otherwise), it is not the case for every single situation, and often amae that seeks affection is often spontaneous and without thought, precisely because the situation allows for it to appear organically. This is the amae that Segasaki and Yoh most often exchange - so think of these assumptions and expectations as "unconscious/subconscious" thought processes.
Third: Amae Between Segasaki and Yoh
Yoh shows a lot of amae when he is drunk:

He whines, buries himself into Segasaki's embrace, refuses to move or let go of him, and keeps repeating "no". In these interactions, Yoh wants Segasaki's affection, but instead of asking, he does, well, this, and he presumes that Segasaki will indulge his behavior. Leaving to get some fresh air might not be as obvious - but it is a form of amae as well, because Man-san is his guest, not Segasaki's, and he shouldn't be leaving Segasaki to entertain her. The expectation that this is okay, and that neither of them will fault him for it, is what makes it amae.
Segasaki obviously enjoys indulging Yoh when Yoh does amae, because he recognises this as Yoh's request for affection from him. It's not that Segasaki enjoys Yoh in this drunk, helpless state; it's not even that Segasaki feels reassured by Yoh's requests for affection. Segasaki knows Yoh likes him, and recognizes that Yoh is struggling with those feelings. That Yoh is actually able to do amae to Segasaki is what delights him the most, because it is something that requires a lot of trust in Segasaki and a willingness to be vulnerable in front of him. This is how amae reinforces relationships - when a request for amae is granted, both the giver and the receiver experience pleasant feelings.
That said, an amae request can also be perceived negatively - if amae is excessive, or if the person responding feels they are obligated to do so. In Ep 5, Man-san chides Yoh for his amae - the fact that he expected to do well from the beginning, and became upset when he failed. He told her about his unemployment, presuming that she would comfort him, but alas.

Segasaki also does amae - but unfortunately Yoh misses many of his cues, and so neither of them really gain pleasant feelings from the interaction (ok so maybe Segasaki does, but I will argue that is more because Segasaki also enjoys it when Yoh obeys him - see @lutawolf's posts for the D/s perspective on this!).

Did you catch it? Segasaki wants Yoh to pass him the Soy Sauce, which, clearly, he is capable of getting himself. He tells Yoh to feed him, because he wants Yoh's affection. And the real kicker - he asked for curry, and expected Yoh to know he wanted pork. In all these interactions, Segasaki presumes that Yoh will indulge him and do for him things he can do himself perfectly well (and even better at that) - this is what makes this amae. But look at Yoh's reactions:

Yoh just stares between the Soy Sauce and Segasaki, between Segasaki and his food, and then just at Segasaki himself. He doesn't recognise any of this as amae, and in the case of feeding Segasaki makes the conclusion that this is somehow a new slave duty he's acquired. And therefore, he does not gain pleasant feelings from it.
In Ep 3 we see a turning point in Yoh's behaviour - his first (sober) attempt at amae (the argument in Ep 2 is debatable - it's not amae from Yoh's POV, but Segasaki responds as if it were, with a head pat and a "when you get drunk, you talk a lot don't you?").

Here, Yoh wants to express his desire for Segasaki's affection, but he can't bring himself to say it aloud. Instead, he dumps bedsheets on Segasaki's lap, as if the bigger the scene he makes the greater the intensity of his desire he can convey. It is the presumption that Segasaki will understand him that makes this amae. And then, we get this:

Not only a happy Segasaki and a sweetly shy Yoh, but also a Yoh who's emboldened by Segasaki's response, and who finally, for the first time, reciprocates touch, and considers the possibility that Segasaki might actually like him.
With every episode, Yoh gets more and more comfortable with doing amae towards Segasaki, because Segasaki picks up on his cues and always responds to them. In Ep 5, Yoh's amae comes out naturally, triggered by the stress of his unemployment, and we see it in all those moments he sounds and acts like a child, and as I mentioned, Segasaki spends the whole episode reassuring Yoh that his amae is welcomed, and that Segasaki likes responding to it. If you've been wondering why the relationship between Segasaki and Yoh can, at times, feel somewhat parental in nature - this is it. It's because Segasaki sees the contradiction between Yoh's childlike insistence that he does not like Segasaki and his desire for Segasaki's attention and affection, for what it really is - Yoh's struggle with accepting himself. When Yoh is able to be sunao, he does amae naturally, and Segasaki responds to him in kind.
Now, all we need is for Yoh to recognize when Segasaki does amae, which will likely happen soon, given that Yoh has grown with every episode.

Robin watches Steve walk past the “Action” section with an armful of Schwarzenegger films three times before she says anything.
“You’re distracted today.”
“Hm?” Steve looks up at her, snapping out of whatever vacant thought he’d slipped away into and entirely proving her point. “Sorry, what?”
“Distracted. You.” Robin points down the correct aisle. “The Terminator and his ilk go down there.”
Steve shakes his head. “Right, sorry.”
Following him over, Robin leans against the end of the shelf while Steve sorts through cases that Robin knows have already been organized. “So what’s got your head in the clouds?”
Steve is quiet for a moment longer. He doesn’t seem unhappy – he seems lighter, actually. He’s not in the same weirdly good mood he’s been in for the last week, but he’s a little more settled, so whatever it is, Robin figures it can’t be bad.
Finally, he glances around the store (it’s empty; Sunday nights hardly even require two employees once the afternoon rush has died out, but Robin won’t complain about being paid to sit around and do nothing for a while), and then says, “Eddie and I are dating. Like, for real this time. I think.”
The words come out in a bit of a rush, and it takes Robin a moment to decide that, yes, she’d heard them correctly.
“Excuse me?”
Her tone is exactly as pointed as she’d meant it to be, if the way Steve winces at the question is any indication.
“The last you told me, you two were ‘talking about it’ and ‘taking it slow.’” Air quotes are heavily employed to illustrate Robin’s new skepticism.
“And we were!” Steve says quickly.
“That was, like, two weeks ago, Steve!” Robin says. “That is not slow!”
“Well it’s not like we just jumped into it! We did talk, and we went on a couple of dates–”
“What? When? Why is this the first I’m hearing about it?”
“I mean, the first was last weekend, so–”
Robin gasps, jabbing a finger at Steve. “You lied to me!”
“I did not,” Steve insists, pointing a finger right back at her, though it doesn’t have quite the same effect with one arm still full of clunky plastic cases.
“You did! You asked me to take your shift because, and I quote, you were going to do something for yourself,” Robin shoots back.
“And I did! I gave myself the chance to see where this thing with Eddie was going,” Steve says.
“Or, you gave yourself the chance to fall right back into the same pattern that hurt you before,” Robin says.
Steve shakes his head. “It’s different this time,” he says, more quietly.
“How?” Robin demands. “Because ‘dating for real this time, I think,’ doesn’t sound that different.”
“I mean, we didn’t say the word dating, exactly, but…” Steve shifts a little on his feet, but stands firm. “He told me that he loves me.”
“Uh huh,” Robin drawls. “And was that before or after you slept together?”
She regrets it the moment she says it, regrets it the moment the words form and she knows they’re going to come out, but it’s too late. She can see the flash of genuine hurt on Steve’s face before he buries it beneath a layer of cool indifference.
“We didn’t actually have sex, but thanks for the vote of confidence,” he bites out, turning and rounding to the next aisle.
Shit.
No one who Robin has personally seen tear a monster in half with his bare hands (feet?) has any right to look as much like a kicked puppy as Steve does, but he somehow manages it.
And the thing is, she knows how important that is to him – for someone to say the words out loud. She’s learned about his parents in bits and pieces; she even eventually got the full scoop on Nancy. She just– she worries. And when she worries, she says things before she really thinks them through.
Sighing, Robin walks around to the next aisle, finding Steve kneeling and paying entirely too much attention to the stacks of cases in front of him. When her slow approach isn’t rebuffed, she sinks down on the floor next to him, cross-legged with her back facing the shelf.
“I’m sorry. That was a cheap shot,” she says.
Steve shrugs.
“If it helps, it wasn’t directed at you,” Robin goes on. “I just– I really don’t have any reason to trust Eddie’s motives, and I don’t like it when you’re sad, and it’s my job as your best friend to look out for you and be mad at people on your behalf. Especially if you’re not going to be mad at them yourself.”
“Isn’t it also your job as my best friend to trust me and my judgment? And, like, support me when I’m doing something that’ll make me happy?” Steve asks quietly, a little dry.
“I guess,” Robin groans, leaning to the side so that her cheek is pillowed on the round of Steve’s shoulder. “But come on. If some girl made me cry, are you telling me you’d get over it in a snap?”
Robin can feel Steve tense beneath her for a moment, and she absolutely knows he’s thinking about lying to her.
“That’s different,” he finally says.
“It really isn’t, you big goddamn hypocrite.” Robin doesn’t bother to hide her smile, even as she smacks Steve on the back, ignoring the whiny ‘ow’ he gives her for it. “So tell me about the date.”
“Which one?” Steve asks.
“The first one. Must’ve been pretty good for you to agree to another,” Robin says.
“It… really was, actually.” Steve shifts carefully out of his crouch, giving Robin enough time to sit up before he settles onto the floor in front of her, back to the opposite shelf. “I mean, it was weird at first. He took me out to some random neighborhood and then we walked a little ways into the woods.”
“Creepy,” Robin says.
“A little bit, yeah.” Steve nods. “And then we came to this little, like, forgotten park? Had some playground equipment and a gazebo. And when we got there, he told me to turn around, so I couldn’t see what he was doing.”
“Creepier.” Robin wrinkles her nose.
“Yeah, but I was curious, so I did it.” Steve shrugs and Robin snorts at him. “But when he let me turn back around, he’d uh – he had a bunch of candles lit up all around the gazebo? It was… really nice. And he brought dinner – something he cooked. Like, with one of the recipes I taught him.”
Robin’s brows go up, reluctantly impressed. “Damn, alright, point to Munson, that was pretty good,” she admits.
“It was,” Steve says with this dumb, smitten little grin that Robin will absolutely tease him about later.
“Okay, okay, so he picked up on you being a romantic, that’s great, but,” Robin holds her hands out in front of herself in an emphatic sort of ‘here’s the thing’ gesture, “where was all of this before?”
“Right?” Steve bursts out, flinging his arms out in front of himself, narrowly avoiding knocking into one of Robin’s hands. “Thank you! I’m not crazy for wondering that!”
“Of course you’re not,” Robin says, narrowing her eyes at him. “He didn’t tell you that you were, did he?”
“No, no, he– he didn’t.” Steve quickly shakes his head. “I just… I don’t know, I felt like I was being kind of unreasonable, I guess. Like, maybe for wanting any of that at all. Or wondering why he didn’t do it sooner.”
“You’re not,” Robin says again. “You deserve to get what you want, Steve.”
“Yeah, that’s what Eddie keeps saying.” Steve sighs, leaning his head back against the shelf.
“Well… good,” Robin says, a mildly reluctant concession. Maybe Eddie’s getting on the right page after all.
“He says he wants me to tell him when I need something,” Steve says. “Like… he wants me to talk to him.”
“What, about your feelings?” Robin asks, playfully wrinkling her nose. “Gross.”
“The worst,” Steve agrees drily, but he looks pleased, and a little thoughtful. Robin gives him the minute to think, before he says, “I did kind of blow up at him, though. Before that.”
“Good,” Robin laughs, nudging his knee with hers.
“It did sort of feel good,” Steve admits, glancing down through his lashes at Robin. “Just… to kinda get it all out.”
“What happened then?” Robin asks.
“Well, it’s – last night kind of went sideways,” Steve says. “It was supposed to be another date, but…”
“But…?”
“He just – when we were having dinner last weekend, he kept calling it our first date, and it was, but it also wasn’t? I kept thinking about what I thought was our first date.”
“Wait, was that the time in your car out by the quarry?”
Steve lifts his head up so he can shift the full brunt of his scrunched look of disapproval onto her. “No, hooking up in my car out by the quarry was not our first date. That didn’t happen until later.”
“Well it’s not like I have timestamps on these things, Steve!” Robin groans.
“It was that night at the diner,” Steve says, and Robin’s mouth falls into a little “oh” of recognition.
“The diner.” She nods.
It’s obvious in retrospect; Robin has heard everything about that night and then some, from the way Eddie had managed to get ketchup everywhere to “and he can do this thing with his tongue, even I didn’t know you could do that, but I’m gonna try and figure it out, it was so good–” (Robin had teasingly asked him if he’d need to practice on a peach or a banana, and he’d thrown a handful of balled-up receipts at her before deciding “both”).
“But he wanted me to tell him about it, so I did, and then last night, for our date, he took me to the diner,” Steve says, raising his eyebrows at Robin.
“What?” Robin’s eyebrows scrunch down in answer. “Did he think he just gets a do-over?”
“That’s what I asked!” Steve says, before subsiding a bit. “But I don’t… I really don’t think he thought that far ahead. I think he just wanted us both to have, like, some kind of special memory there.”
Robin hums, squinting at Steve skeptically.
“Anyway, I kinda yelled at him and I left, but then he actually came and found me,” Steve continues.
“Where did you go?” Robin asks.
“The lake.”
“Why were you all the way out there?”
Steve grimaces. “Mostly because I knew he doesn’t like going out there.”
Robin snorts, and Steve’s grimace shifts into a guilty sort of smile.
“But he came out there, anyway. And we talked, and– I really think he means it, Rob,” Steve says, looking at her like he needs her to believe it, too. Or at least like he needs her to believe him.
Robin sighs, letting her head fall back slowly, as if she’s deflating. “Fine,” she says eventually. “Munson is off death row. He can have a parole hearing.”
“I think you’re getting a little too into this whole execution metaphor,” Steve says.
“You’re both lucky I didn’t decide to make it literal,” Robin shoots back, and Steve laughs. “So, wait,” she looks back up, “you seriously haven’t had sex again? Since the whole…?”
“Oh my god, get this: he actually walked me to my door last weekend,” Steve says, halfway between incredulous and amused. “He didn’t even ask to come inside. Said the rule is to wait until the third date.”
“Oh, I bet you loved that,” Robin teases.
“I mean, I wouldn’t have said no if he had asked to come in,” Steve scoffs. “But I’m… kind of glad he didn’t. It was different.”
Robin smiles. “Different is promising,” she says, reaching out to pat Steve on the knee. “Now come on; we close in, like, half an hour and I don’t want to stay late cleaning.”
“Yeah, alright,” Steve agrees, hoisting himself off the floor before offering Robin a hand up.
“Also, you owe me dinner for all the secrecy,” Robin declares, heading back towards the front of the store with the intent of putting the counter back in order.
“What?” Steve groans. “I already spent, like, two weeks with literally no one to talk to about all of this. Haven’t I suffered enough?”
“Nope,” Robin says, and for all she can hear him grumbling, it only takes a minute before Steve is standing next to her again, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. “Sap,” she mutters, putting arm around his waist and squeezing him back.
“And yet, who agreed to be my best friend?” Steve asks.
Robin sighs. “I did,” she says, and she doesn’t even have to look to know that Steve’s grin mirrors hers.

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 8 of 12 - Mhok is about the most indulgent boyfriend on the planet. Why they dressed as 1930s gangsters for the wedding? I have no idea idea, but it’s adorable. IFYLITA mark 2? And they’re even dancing together using bits of the same steps that were used that show too. Cute nod.

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 6 of 10 - Everything but the kitchen sink includes lesbians apparently. Excellent. Carry on. Also a lot of filler about the sides. (Boring, stop that.) I wish the doctor were a little bit more of a multifaceted character (and less evil snakey), and that we had some of his backstory + Tharn. If we saw them as kids, having a longer true friendship, it would make Tharn’s attitude a little bit more sympathetic and forgiving.
For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 5 of 10 - I like this show, but it’s awfully one-sided in the romance arena. I mean shouldn’t they be trying to support and make each other happy? Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 9 of 10 - Now I’m having a hard time keeping the twins straight. Who’s getting beat up for whom, what’s going on? No matter who, First caught himself a live one. I like those bits.

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 7 of 14 - I got little crumbs of my sides but not enough, and then they dropped the mpreg bomb. Kinda like blowing the BL diaper. Trash watch happening here.
Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 5 of 12 - They are so cute. And mostly such good communicators. Except evil dad is evil! I didn’t have OffGun tango on my bingo card, but I'm happy to check it off. After making everyone sing, GMMTV is now making everyone dance. I much prefer it. Kiss came a bit out of nowhere. But it was sweet.

Bake Me Please (Mon Gaga) ep 6fin - I don’t know, I feel like this just wasn’t good enough for the class of talent involved. Which means it’s mostly the story and script's fault. In the end I kinda just wanted Guy to get the guy.
In cluclusion:
A lack-luster story about a group of bakers coping with (mostly) a shoddy script that could not be saved by either the beauty nor the talent of the actors involved. It suffered for lack of narrative backbone and so did I. 6/10
Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI ep 8fin - Mai is an adorable clingy boyfriend, and that bit was kind of cute.
Summation:
Office clown, Jade, a manic pixie dream dork, is courted by the new intern, Mai. This show is right in my wheelhouse but it fell flat for me. I wish it had lived up to the concept behind the title (if nothing else). If we had done more of Jade‘s family and the reasons behind his self-worth struggles and self-acceptance issues, they might have been easier to bare. Without backstory, the show had no through line. In the end, Jade was a largely intolerable character, and Mai felt flat and lacking in personality. I was disappointed with this show, and I hope they don't blame the pair for the poor ratings. 6/10

i groaned as i opened my eyes, fluttering them multiple times so i could adjust to the sunlight hitting my face through my window, lighting up my room and painting a beautiful orange-like color onto my walls from the early morning sunrise. i extend my arm out from under the warm comforter, to turn off my blaring alarm. i move to my side to look over at the alarm as it reads, 6:04am.
i sit up, stretching and yawning as i grumble a few breathless words as i place my feet on the cold hardwood flooring of my bedroom.
i quickly shuffle my way to my closet to grab some clothes to change into. considering it’s the middle of august in boston, it’ll most likely be warm today, so i grab a short sleeve plain white t-shirt and light washed baggy denim jeans. also, of course socks, bra, underwear, the good stuff.
today is the first day of my junior year. which means, it’s the first day of senior year for my annoying brother, nathan doe, and the triplets, whom i’ve known since i was at least 5 years old. i’ve grown up with them. i’ve seen them pick their nose, pee in the pool, and scream that girls have cooties into my face. i’ve witnessed them going on dates for the first time and their first sip of alcohol. i’ve seen it all.
nick is my best friend in the whole wide world. hes the one person who knows every single detail about me. when mine and nate’s parents used to get into fights when we were younger, nick was the first one to distract me from it. i’d bring my barbie’s to the triplets house and play with him, while nate played x-box with matt and chris. speaking of those two, im very close with matt. he and i bonded in my freshman year, when i was discovering what having anxiety meant, so was he. we kind of helped each other along the way, ive always viewed him as a second brother. chris on the other hand? not as a brother.
christopher sturniolo. the guy i’ve had the fattest crush on since the age of 10. below that age, i also thought boys had ‘cooties’. until one day, when i was playing tag with chris on the playground in elementary school.
flashback
i was chasing chris down the sidewalk that separated the playground from the grassy area at recess, when i tumbled over and landed on my hands and knees. which caused my knees and palms to be scrapped up. as i stood up, my knees were slightly bleeding, along with my palm. i guess chris heard that i stopped, he hurried over to where i was.
“are you okay?” chris softly asked.
“n-no.” i softly cried.
he gently picks my right hand up, planting a microscopic kiss on the back of it.“here, i’ll take you to a teacher. okay?” he says, slightly holding onto my elbow.
“okay.” i sniffled.
from that moment. i knew. i liked him.

i sigh at the memory as i finish getting dressed.
once im done, i put on a pair of air force 1’s, and make my way to my vanity. i opt on just putting on some mascara and lip gloss, deciding that i dont want to do a full face of makeup today.
i pick up my hairbrush, slowly brushing out any kinks or knots in it. once im done, i walk towards my bathroom, and brush my teeth.
“hey! are you ready? the triplets are on their way!” nate yells from down the hall.
“yeah! almost! give me 3 more minutes!” i yell with a mouth full of mint toothpaste.
once im done in the bathroom, i make my way into my bedroom, picking up my backpack off the floor, and grabbing my phone off the nightstand. almost as soon as i head toward my bedroom door to open it, i hear a faint honking coming from outside.
“are you ready? they’re here.” nate says to me as i walk down the rigid, old stairs of my house.
“yes.” i say as i walk past him, to outside.
i make my way to the minivan in my driveway, as i walk around to open the door behind the passenger seat. as nate and i get into our usual spots. matts always driving of course. chris in the passenger seat, nick in the middle backseat, me sitting behind chris, and nate sitting behind matt. it’s the ‘unspoken seat chart’ we randomly came up with.
“you guys ready for senior year!” chris yells loudly.
“yes. my last year in this hell hole!” nate exclaims.
nick and matt just say ‘yes’ in unison.
“what about you, kid? you ready for junior year?” chris turns around in his seat to ask me.
“kid” how i hate that nickname.
“uh yeah, sure.” i mumble.
“junior year really isn’t that bad. don’t stress to much over it.” nick whispers to me
after 15 minutes of chris’s loud rap songs giving me a blasting headache, we finally arrive at the school. once we walk in, we all split our ways to head to our first period classrooms. this year, i have english, so i make my way there.
once i get into the room, i head to the seat furthest in the back. as soon as i sit down, the bell rings, signaling it’s time for first period to begin.
“good morning everyone. my name is mrs. steven’s, ill be your english teacher for this year. now let’s go over…” mrs. steven’s speaks to the room full of teenagers.
i allow her words to trail off as my brain blocks her voice out. i hate school. how long until summer break again?

hello i am once again thinking about grim, and by extension the heartslabyul duo because if there’s anything else that lives in my head rent-free it’s how the main four are as close as friends as they are throughout the entire game so far.
(help this ramble became longer than i intended)
-> i know it's a pattern that the previous dorms help out in the next book which means once book 7 ends, we’re assuming book 8 would be about ramshackle(?). which means it’s diasomnia’s turn to have a big role in the following dorm. -> but it got me thinking. throughout the books, heartslabyul (specifically adeuce) is always present somehow. no matter how much screen time they actually have and how relevant they are to the conflict at that time. (actually i think something similar could be said with diasomnia but i want to focus mainly on adeuce) -> throughout the books, we're just set up with how good of friends the four are. the prologue, books 1 and 2 start to develop the four's chemistry together, and by book 3 we get one of the first signs that yuu cares about these three to the point they're willing to risk it because their dumbasses decided to sign a deal with azul. -> in book 4, while adeuce didn't have much involvement, i believe twst JUST hammers home that all four of them are friends friends. we are shown how ace and deuce went through all the trouble of transportation DURING THE HOLIDAYS because they thought yuu and grim were in trouble. like they could've easily just went "hey it must have been nothing" but they were worried enough to go check on them, not even thinking that someone else could've had handled it already.
-> since the pattern was that the previous dorm helps the next dorm, why does it seem like in book 5 it seems that heartslabyul, or at least, adeuce has as much of a big role as scarabia? the scarabia duo was there to notice the signs with vil but it was deuce who dealt the last blow to him. (honestly i don't remember much but i don't know how much help scarabia even helped pomefiore other than being in vdc hhh) -> so then it made me think, huh. it's like twst is setting up that these two will be more important than we think and will definitely not be going away soon. -> and then THE END OF BOOK 6. ouughh the end of book 6. their reunion just solidified for me how much they all care about each other. adeuce were not prompted by a direct "we're in trouble, help us" text this time. they just found out yuu and grim were somewhere in danger and it agonized them that they could do nothing about it but wait and hope they're safe. -> book 7 finally we're back to finding out ways to help yuu get home. and since they're all admittedly close friends (dare i say found family) at this point without explicitly stating it, i get the vibes of "we'll help you get home because we care about you but we're not going to think about the depressing possibility we might never see each other ever again".
-> so very abrupt transition;;; this led me to thinking about the overall “alice in wonderland” theme throughout twst. -> is that why adeuce has been with us this entire time? to remind us of that theme? we are in twisted wonderland after all. (I'm not really sure about the thought of yuu being alice but it's an interesting one to consider too) -> to tie in more with the alice in wonderland theme, i'm briefly going to go back to diasomnia. in book 7, there's like a theme of dreams. in fact, throughout the game it was all about dreams and visions and stuff. and in book 7 we're just diving into it. -> and in the story of alice in wonderland, there seems to be the implication that everything that happened in wonderland was just based on a crazy dream that alice had. like we don't know if anything was ever real. (i'm not really a fan of the "it's all a dream" twist but the connections got the gears in my brain turning) (also mickey must be relevant too but i have no thoughts about the implications of his existence at the moment 💀) -> i know we're not done with diasomnia's book but it seems to be set up as a catalyst for something bigger along the line (thinking about the possibility that there is even something bigger than a malleus overblot is very wild to say the least)
-> SO ANOTHER abrupt transition but still related, i thought about the parallel between the "overblot grim" in the beginning of the game and the "jabberwock(y)" in alice in wonderland. they're both chimera-like creatures that are like the final bosses or something. -> and what if a way for yuu to "go home" is to "slay" the jabberwocky (or in this case the overblot grim) just like in the story of alice in wonderland / through the looking glass. -> there's theories i believe that ace is set up to be some kind of "trump card" based on his name and the fact his unique magic isn't revealed yet. but also i want to add deuce in there too remembering how he held a big role in stopping vil in book 4 like some kind of foreshadowing. -> maybe the main role diasomnia will have is only about all these dream shenanigans. and i'd like to think instead that at the end of the day, this conflict with an overblotted grim is ultimately between our main four. some representations based off alice in wonderland. -> going full circle, is this why we have been shown so much of the friendship between all four of them? to establish this possible eventual conflict? and to make it harder for us to choose about "going home"? do we even get the choice?
do we "slay" the jabberwocky or will we decide to stay in this seemingly dreamlike fantasy wonderland instead?

Predicting Future Fountains in Deltarune: The Missing Ingredient

I’ve noticed a trend of Deltarune fans trying to predict what will happen in future chapters. It’s a common trait of a fanbase undergoing hiatus brain. One of the most common forms of prediction is trying to guess where future dark worlds will pop up in the light world. Some fans’ predictions have made more convincing arguments than others, but so far all of the ones I’ve seen seem to be missing a key ingredient—one I intend to share today.
To begin, I’m of the opinion that it is more or less impossible for anyone outside of Toby’s development team to accurately predict all of Deltarune’s chapters outside of making a wildly lucky guess. We have been teased some information regarding chapter 3 and, to a lesser extent, 4 and 5. The further removed a future chapter is from 1 and 2, the harder it is to predict. On top of that, I’m anticipating that the full game will introduce some earthshaking twist that will throw the narrative on its head—this will likely occur around chapter 6 or 7, but it could be sooner.
Despite this, fans (including myself) have attempted to predict each chapter’s dark world location by scraping together what little evidence we can. One of the most common arguments is to assert that each dark world so far has followed a trend that future dark worlds must follow as well. Perhaps the most popular trend argued for is the “double door rule,” i.e., the argument that each dark world’s entrance in the light world will be a pair of double doors.
The Double Door Rule

The strongest piece of evidence supporting the double door rule is the entrance to the librarby computer lab: in Chapter 1 it was a single door, but in Chapter 2 it became a double-door entrance. Apparently this was such an important detail that Toby was willing to retroactively change content from a previous chapter. This has led fans to speculate that other locations in Hometown with double doors will become future dark world locations.
On the one hand, I do think that light world locations with double doors have a decent chance of becoming future dark worlds. However, I think many fans neglect to mention that this “rule” already has exceptions to it. The most obvious exception is the Dreemurr house in Chapter 3. None of the doors in the house are double doors, and it’s 99% confirmed at this point that this location will be Chapter 3’s dark world location.

On top of that, it could also be argued that the dark world inside the unused classroom does not follow this pattern either. There is a double door that leads into Castle Town, but this is a separate dark world from the unused classroom. We see the great door, which is a double door in the dark world, and going through it takes us to the Card Kingdom dark world. However, in the light world we can see that neither door leading into the unused classroom is a double door.

Even if one were to argue that the Great Door still “counts” as Chapter 1’s dark world having double doors, it doesn’t do us much good if those double doors only exist in the dark world—by that logic, any door in the light world (single or double) could lead to a future dark world. On that note, the fact that the librarby’s door was “retconned” into being a double door in Chapter 2 means that the same could happen to any future dark world location as well, even if that’s not the most likely outcome.
Despite its flaws, I don’t think the double door rule is completely without merit. I think the purpose of double doors is to indicate a potential location where Kris and Susie will use their dark world entrance animation first seen in Chapter 2.

I think the likely reason for the library’s door being changed was to allow for this new animation to play upon entering Cyber World. In other words, this rule may help in predicting dark worlds that Kris and Susie will enter intentionally, but won’t help when predicting “unexpected” dark worlds that appear like the one at the end of Chapter 2.
The Missing Ingredient
With this in mind, I believe I’ve stumbled upon a more reliable pattern that can be used to predict future dark worlds: one that has applied to the first three chapters’ dark worlds and may likely apply to Castle Town as well. I’ve seen many fans point out that dark worlds are strongly associated with the idea of escapism: toys and games, the internet, and television. I think this idea is on the right track, but it’s missing one key ingredient that I alluded to earlier.

To better explain what this missing ingredient is, we need to take a look at Chapter 3’s upcoming dark world. This dark fountain was made inside of the Dreemurr living room, and although previews have shown some possible influence from other parts of the house, the dark world appears to be primarily themed around the television that Kris turned on. I think the fact that the dark world is primarily themed around television rather than the Dreemurr house as a whole tells us a lot about how future dark worlds will operate.
The way I see it, it’s not enough for a dark world location to be somewhere “important” in the light world. It’s not enough for a dark world to have a double door entrance. A dark world needs to exist as a playing field for gameplay scenarios to take place. But above all else, a dark world needs a theme. And so far, the themes we’ve seen all relate to escapism—specifically, a type of escapism that can be expressed as a relatable interest or “medium” of some kind—that’s the missing ingredient.
Chapter 3 seems to codify this trend, as what we know of that dark world implies that it is not simply a “house-themed” dark world, but instead a TV-themed dark world with perhaps some flavoring from the rest of the Dreemurr household sprinkled in. We see something similar in Chapter 2 with fair fliers from the computer lab appearing as set dressing in an otherwise computer-dominated light world.

I think that a “house-theme” dark world theme would not have been sufficient for Toby’s purposes, especially if there are future dark worlds that will also take place in the homes of other Hometown residents.
In other words, I think this trend of media/medium-based escapism does limit the likelihood of certain locations from becoming future dark worlds. For example, the Mayor’s office may not become a dark world unless it’s established that the Mayor has some specific interest or hobby that she brings to work that would become the theme of her dark world. Otherwise, an “office-themed” dark world would break the trend of escapism and would likely be bland to boot.
Additionally, this might also make Asgore’s shop less likely as a future location, as his dwelling area only has a TV (which has been done) and, given Asgore’s meager living situation, it seems less likely that he’d have paraphernalia from some escapist hobby locked behind his double doors. We do know that Alphys lends comics to Asgore, but these are already present in his main dwelling area, and the prevailing theory among fans is that a flower shop dark world would be in the mystery room in the back instead of the rooms we’ve already seen.

Another reason I doubt a flower shop dark world, at least in Chapter 4 or 5, is that Toby said in his summer newsletter that Chapter 3 “is shaping up to be a pretty strange one. I mostly focused on unusual gameplay elements, and it’s not too heavy on the story… Anyway, Chapter 4 will be a much more standard chapter!” Since Chapter 3 is implied to focus on the Dreemurr family, it would feel odd to me that Toby would deem this chapter as “not too heavy on the story,” only to include another Dreemurr-focused chapter in Asgore’s shop so soon after it.
My takeaway from Toby’s assessment is that he doesn’t consider Chapter 3 story-heavy because Chapter 3 focuses more on gameplay than story, but I believe it’s also because the Dreemurr focus will lend itself more to a character-focused narrative rather than one that moves the immediate main plot forward significantly compared to Chapter 4. This also implies to me that Kris may not be the Knight, given that the chapter where Kris creates a dark world is viewed as a “strange” outlier and less story-focused, but the subsequent chapter is viewed as “more standard,” which would make sense if chapter 4’s dark world is created by the real Knight.
Predicting Future Dark Worlds
So where do I think future dark worlds will take place, based on this trend? Well, so far we’ve had dark worlds based on toys and games, the internet, and television. In addition, the game has also made reference to three other forms of escapist entertainment that may play a future role in the plot: literature, art, and video games.
To start, we have literature—specifically, fantasy literature. We’ve seen multiple references to Gerson’s Lord of the Hammer series, and this series is near and dear to the heart of Father Alvin, one of several Roaring Knight suspects. I’ve theorized that Alvin is the Knight, so it would make sense that he’d create a dark world themed around his father’s book series.

Now, you might ask: shouldn’t that have been in the Library? Well, I argued in my Alvin Knight theory that the librarby fountain was botched—if Alvin is the Knight then he likely didn’t intend to create a computer dark world, but was forced into the equipment closet when Berdly and Noelle entered and he created Cyber World from there. The fact that a literature dark world wasn’t used in this instance could imply that it’s being “saved” for a different dark world.
So where might a literature-based dark world take place? A possible location could be the school—there’s currently a locked classroom on the opposite side of Castle Town from the former Card Kingdom.

The school is connected to Gerson and besides the librarby it’s the place that would most likely have books in it. However, the church is another possibility.
The Church

Many have theorized that there will be a church dark world, likely in Chapter 4. I don’t disagree with this notion, but one thing I partially disagree with is the idea that this dark world will be purely themed around the town’s religion or that it will portray the town religion as a form of escapism to fit with the trend of dark worlds as escapism. I somehow doubt that Toby would make a commentary on religion that on-the-nose, given that he removed a series of Clover lines that merely hinted at charged topics like religion and gun control.

Instead, I think a church dark world will follow the trend of Chapter 3’s dark world: it will primarily be themed around an escapist hobby or interest, Gerson’s literature in this case, and the church-y elements will be background dressing. On that note, I think there’s a strong possibility that the church will have more than one room in it. If it does, then I think the dark world will not be in the main hall of the church and will instead take place in a back room, either Alvin’s room or a classroom used for the church’s youth group.
There is a snag with this prediction, however: Castle Town. In the past, I’ve thrown around the possibility that Castle Town may have been created by Gerson—specifically, created from his old writings (hinted at by the old papers seen on the floor of the supply closet).

If this is the case, then Castle Town would satisfy the role of being a “literature” dark world and it would follow the same theming pattern as the other dark worlds we’ve seen.
So where would this leave the Church? Well, a church dark world would still be possible without breaking the pattern I’m arguing for. Instead of the church being a literature-themed dark world, it may instead be an art-themed dark world instead. My evidence for this mainly relies on one line of dialogue: Spamton referring to easels and CRTs.

“WE DON’T NEED ANYONE ELSE!!! WE DON’T NEED [[Easels]] or [[CRTs]]!”
For those unaware, a CRT is an old type of television—the type that the Dreemurr household has. Spamton makes numerous references to future Chapter 3 characters, namely Mike and Tenna, but the easel line is the odd man out—it could be a patented Spamton-grade non-sequitur, but the fact that it’s paired with a reference to television makes me think it’s significant.
An Artistic Alternative
Unless if Toriel has a hidden artistic side, there’s no evidence of any easels in the Dreemurr household. It’s implied that Asriel has some artistic talent, given his framed drawing and the game assets on his computer, but there’s no easel in his room either. Whoever drew the Neo body might have some artistic talent—if so, I suppose this doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Blook house dark world. However, I think there’s another artist candidate: Alvin.
I’ll admit, I am stretching things a little, but I think there’s a possibility that Alvin could be an aspiring artist—emphasis on the “aspiring” part. We do see an old drawing of his in the unused classroom--it’s heavily implied that he drew this as a child, which would explain why it’s yellowed and why (presumably) Gerson held onto it.

Most people draw when they’re kids so it’s not unusual to see that Alvin did so, but from a narrative standpoint this could be intended to plant the seed of the idea that Alvin is associated with the arts.
We know that Alvin’s youth group also partakes in arts and crafts, as evidenced by the angel doll that Noelle and Dess made, so it’s likely that Alvin has at least some experience as an art teacher, even if it’s for something as pedestrian as afterschool children’s crafts.

We also know that Alvin hung around with Asriel, and both of their drawings are described as “poorly drawn,” perhaps suggesting that Alvin may have mentored Asriel at one point.

I could see “poorly drawn” being a flavor text calling card to describe art associated with Alvin in the future, perhaps with a joke where the flavor text describes his childhood art interchangeably with his most recent attempts. Alvin being an artist would also dovetail nicely with my past musings on whether Ralsei was created from a drawing.

If Alvin’s an artist then this would line up with his questioning of whether his father was proud of him—while this line could be referring to any Knight-related activities that Alvin’s engaged in, it could also double as his overall view of his career choice and talents (or lack of). It’s hard to make it big as an artist, and having a father who’s far more successful in his own field would highlight Alvin’s perceived inadequacies even further. To top it off, I’ve previously pointed out how Gerson’s life parallels the life of J.R.R. Tolkien and Alvin may or may not parallel his son, Christopher Tolkien. Well, it just so happens that one of Christopher Tolkien’s professions was being an illustrator, best known for drawing the maps of Middle Earth.
How sure am I of Alvin being an artist? Not very, but I think it’s a distinct possibility. If one were to ask me what interests Alvin would likely have outside of his religion and his father’s work, then art would be the first thing to spring to my mind. At best I’d give it maybe a 60% chance of being true. I mainly bring it up as a “backup option” for the Church’s theme if literature is already taken by Castle Town, given that there’s some scant references to art that can be cobbled together around Alvin, at least when it comes to teaching children. Seeing various doodles come to life as darkners would be interesting, at least.
Chapter 5
So Chapter 4’s potential church dark world could account for either a literature theme or an art theme. Earlier I mentioned a video game theme, so where does this fit? Well, I think the answer is obvious:

Deltarune has been heavily associating Noelle with her interest in video games and comparing them to dark worlds. The Spamton Sweepstakes has only doubled down on this association by teasing a future ice palace location from Dragon Blazers.

I think it’s more likely that this location will be in chapter 5 than, say, 6 or 7, because it was teased as one of the final images in the Spamton sweepstakes, which primarily teased content in the next chapters coming out.
On top of that, Noelle is an important character and Chapter 2 heavily implies that she will return to our party at some point, given that there’s unused dialogue referencing her being in Castle Town and equipping items that she currently can’t without hacking. Each member of Noelle’s family also seems poised to play a role in the narrative, so it would only make sense for things to come to a head in the Holiday household for Chapter 5.
Chapter 5 taking place in the Holiday house would also align with my earlier observations on Chapter 3’s dark world: a “house-themed” dark world would be too drab and would be less appealing if future dark worlds take place in other character’s houses. Having a Dreemurr dark fountain and Holiday dark fountain makes a lot more sense when one can be themed around television and the other around video games.
Another strength around this prediction is that, despite my attempts to tie my dark fountain predictions to my Alvin knight theory, I think overall this prediction can complement most major Knight suspects. I’m no stranger to the fact that Dess and Mayor Holiday have become rising stars in the field of Knight speculation—having dark worlds in the church and Holiday house would fit with ether of them being the Knight, given that they’re a religious family with history in the church, and the house fountain’s reasoning should be obvious. On the flip side, I think both locations also work for Alvin: the church is obvious, and Alvin learning (or already knowing) that Noelle is connected to the Angel would give him incentive to pursue the Holiday family.
On that note, if Alvin is the Knight then I think his arc will not only involve him trying to use a dark world to revive his father via his dust-covered hammer (likely during Chapter 4), but also using said revival as a means to tempt Noelle with the idea of reviving Rudy in Chapter 5, assuming his health takes a turn for the worse when he tries to go to church. This turn has some foreshadowing in Noelle’s line about wanting healing magic to be real for her father’s sake—Alvin could have the means to make such a wish come true, or at least make Noelle think that it will.

The Future
So where does this leave Chapters 6 and 7? I have no idea. Like I mentioned, I think there are major plot twists yet to be seen or hinted at in this game, and chapters 6 and 7 could break the pattern of previous dark worlds (if 6 and 7 even have dark worlds at all). If I had to come up with another form of escapism, then I suppose the town festival could be seen as a form of escapism in a similar vein to the toys and games of Chapter 1.

We have seen a few references to fairs and carnivals in dark worlds, so this would bring things full circle. If all of Hometown takes part in the fair, then a dark world with a fair theme could occur anywhere, even outdoors, or possibly even encompass the whole town.
Last on the list is the shelter.

Honestly, I have no clue about the shelter. I’m not even sure whether the shelter will be opened in Chapter 6 or opened in Chapter 7. Most fans say 7, but making it Chapter 6 would fit the Gaster theming that’s been associated with that location, and ending Chapter 5 on the gang heading into the shelter would be one heck of a cliffhanger. I can’t say what escapism could be associated with the shelter. If the shelter is the final chapter, then maybe Deltarune itself will be portrayed as the escapism, though I’m not sure how you’d make a Deltarune-themed dark world when you’re already playing Deltarune. If the game is going to have a chapter that’s the odd man out, then 6 and/or 7 are the likeliest candidates, imo, which basically makes them impossible to predict.
As I’ve alluded to earlier, any number of things could derail my prediction: there could be a huge twist, the festival could come sooner than Chapter 6, or the church could be a red herring. I remember in Chapter 1 when several fans (myself included) were confident that chapter 2’s dark world would be in the hospital due to the early screenshot of the fun gang dressed as doctors.

It’s very possible that Toby knows we’re going to assume there will be a church dark world when he has no such plans. It’s also possible that dark worlds won’t follow a consistent pattern at all and everything so far has just been coincidence.
Still, I think if we are going to make predictions to pass the time then it helps to come up with predictions that are internally consistent, or at least ones that have something narratively or thematically interesting that’s driving them. To me, throwing darts at a board and deciding fountain locations based on a building’s doors just seems far less intriguing. Those are my two cents, anyway. Either way, I can’t wait to see the next status update prove my prediction wrong before it even gets off the ground. Until then…

How Much Does the H.E.V. actually Weigh?
Hey folks. So as a resident loser and wonderer of useless things I have been trying to figure out how much the H.E.V. Suit from hl2 actually weighs.
There’s no actual good indicator in hl1 for how much the mach 4 weighs so we’re going to be focusing on the hl2 mach 5 model.
Part 1: The Puzzle
First thing that I did was figure out how many cinderblocks gordon weighs. In one of the First puzzles in the game after you get your HEV and the Crowbar + 9mm You have to use 7 cinderblocks to make one side of the See-Saw go down enough that you can jump to the other side. However, if you use 6 cinderblocks it will act as a See-Saw, leading me to believe that gordon, with his crowbar and his pistol, weighs about 6.5 cinderblocks.
Part 2: Cinderblocks
Now, there’s a few different types of Cinderblocks that exist. There’s the standard ones with the two holes and the prongs which I’m sure many have seen before. But the thing is, Is that the Cinderblocks used in the game are not standard Cinderblocks.

As we can see here the cinderblocks used in half life are the largest and therefore the heaviest cinderblocks on aforementioned chart. (bottom right)
Therefore a singular cinderblock used in the game weighs 52lbs/23.5kg
“But wait Tony!” you say “What about the weapons??”
fear not loyal half life fan, I’ve got that covered.
Part 3: The Weapons
So after reviewing a couple videos and confirming, the two weapons you have at the See-Saw puzzle are the Crowbar and the 9mm

Now after a little research, The 9mm weighs about 1.7lbs/.77kg
The crowbar weighs 18lbs/8.2kg
Part 4: The Guy himself
I want to preface this that this is a lot of speculation that’s based on game lore.
So, Gordon. He’s 6′2″ and looks like a bean pole.

i mean seriously look at this guy. He looks like your average STEM dad.
But the thing to remember here is that he has been going through Hazardous Environment training, including the Hazardous environment course. Along with being taught how to use the H.E.V. which the weight (we will get to it at the end of this post) will absolutely need him to bulk up at least a little for it.
So now we’re assuming that he has an athletic body type.
Unfortunately the USAmerican health system HEAVILY relies on BMI as a “Healthy Weight” indicator so that’s what i have to use (I tried finding something else if anyone has some good resources for this it would be wonderful if you replied or reblogged this with those)
According to places like Banner Health (which is what i used as reference) the average 6′2″ Athletic man falls between 171-210lbs/77.6-99.25kg. I assume here that Gordon falls around 202lbs/91.6kg
Part 5: The Math
Okay so, we have the weight of the cinderblocks used, we have the weight of Gordon himself, and we have the weight of the weapons. Fantastic! Now to do everyone's least favorite thing, Math.
First The cinderblocks since they’re the foundation (haha get it) of our entire project here.
52/2= 26lbs                                                                  23.5/2=11.75kg
52x6= 312 lbs                                                               23.5x6=141kg
312 + 26= 338lbs                                                         141 + 11.75= 152.75kg
Next we’re going to get the weight of the two weapons
1.7 + 18= 19.7lbs                                                              8.2 + .77= 8.97kg
Great. Now we have all the numbers we need.
338-19/7= 318.3lbs                                                         152.75-8.97= 143.78kg
318.3-202= 116.3lbs                                                       143.78-91.6= 52.18kg

The H.E.V. weighs 116.3lbs/52.18

Gun doesn’t think of them as love letters.
Everything that he has written or typed, more a statement of fact rather than him dwelling too much on the words. 
He tells you he thinks about you because he does.
He tells you he misses you because he does.
He tells you you have a hold on him because you do.
Gun’s train of thought, as he admits that he misses you - a startling vulnerability that he has never exposed or felt before, does not follow his usual logic. 
He thinks having it spoken, not written, makes it less of a weakness. Simply because it’s less tangible. Invisible.
A confession made all the more intimate spoken in the dead of night. Travelling hundreds of miles, across seas and valleys and fields, to reach your ears.
Which makes everything he does, all the more romantic. Because Gun Park does it without thinking, without logic. 
He just is. Innately so.
An unforeseen characteristic that only you could tease out.

You read and re-read the messages until you could recite them, imagine his fingers gliding over the screen when he has something to tell you.
Scan over the images, inspecting each and every pixel. A glimpse into this side of his life that you’re not privy to but he is slowly inviting you in. 
Listen to the voice message so much that you think you would be able to pick out his sigh like you can his handwriting; the timbre and inflection and articulation as unique as a fingerprint.

The day of Gun’s return draws nearer.
You find yourself staying at his place later and later. Eventually sleeping over every night, curled up on the sofa like a cat. 
In case you hear the click of the front door, the footsteps, that sigh. 
Every small noise makes you jump.

8:37pm
They finally concluded all business.  Everything went to plan, everything running to schedule.
Gun and Goo didn’t even make it back to the hotel for a night of rest.
Instead, they climb into the car, racing to Seoul and chasing the sun across the sky as darkness and starlight followed. Roads turned from dusty tracks into tarmacked lanes and then super highways.
Your texts start to come through at once.
“Is that Y/N?” the curious blonde tries to peer over.
“Focus on the road.” 
Gun’s voice comes out amused without meaning to. He couldn’t hide the smile on his face as he scrolls through your messages.

.
Even though he mentioned he would not be able to contact you, your fingers still twitch when anything, no matter how minute, happens or a random thought pops into your head - Gun being the first person you want to tell.
You draw back at first, not wanting to bombard him with messages when he is unable to receive them.
In the end, you give in.
Besides, you reason, it's nice to know when someone is thinking about you.

Goo feels the eyes burning into the side of his head. Had felt it for probably a good minute how. It's unnerving.
"Can't you drive any faster?" Gun growls.
“What you in such a rush for?"
“...”
“I’m not going to drive any faster with you glaring at me, you bastard!”
“...”
“Stop looking at me!”
"..."
Ugh. Goo presses down on the accelerator.
The speed increases from 120kmh to 130, ticking up to 140... 150... 160 and higher still.
"You're paying for any speeding fines!"

.
.
Gun never thought he would fall for someone.
And never that the way to his heart is through his stomach.
Because even with the push and pull of your blossoming relationship, that was how it all started wasn’t it?

He realised fully how he felt about you, the depths of his affection, with the first picture he sent, when he said that your food tastes better.
It’s the truth.
Goo had declared his meal the most delicious thing he has ever had in his mouth with a suggestive waggle of the brows.
To Gun it was bland and tasteless. Goo, in disbelief, stole a bite from his plate then looked at him like there was something severely wrong with him.
Maybe there is.

Each time he read a message from you, it was a dopamine hit straight to his brain and his heart.
Something to look forward to after a long day.
Gun doesn’t remember ever feeling so tired with work, especially not when there is the thrill of a fight waiting just around a corner.
Now all his thoughts are invaded by you.
He lies in bed awake at night wondering what you are doing.

12:35am
"I've been driving non stop for 4 hours man!"
"..."
"Either we pull in at the rest stop or I piss on you. You choose."
Gun doesn't want to test him. Usually one to be so meticulous about his car but the blonde menace might just really do it. The possibility is, worryingly, not at zero.
"Just hurry the fuck up."

Gun can barely believe it. Usually one to bide his time and wait, to lament the end of fights and violence; now he's rushing home to see you.

The business trip was nothing short of a complete success.
They’ve expanded HNH’s influence, secured a promising business partner and pocketed themselves a pretty penny.
Goo had even made himself a secret friend. He thought for sure he was going to have to fight Gun for them, the person fitting all their criteria:
Excellent fighter with ample raw talent, patient and shrewd, the fun side of mentally unwell.
"Wanna flip for them?" Goo nudged his partner.
"You can have them."

1:01am
There's a convenience store selling bouquets when they stop.
As Gun waits for Goo, he wonders if this will be too much.

1:15am
"Huh. Gun Park pulling out all the stops? I never thought I'd see the day."
Goo comments on the bouquet as soon as he sees it. Gun ignores him, studying the flowers in his hands. He nearly went for red roses until he saw the pink camellias.
It's the same shade as your lips.

2:18am
Goo pulls up with a screech outside the building, streets empty and only the sound of his engine purring filling the early morning air.
"Don't say I never do anything for you, you bastard."
"...Thanks."

2:24am
Gun spots your shoes in the hallway.
Had wanted to bang on your door anyway despite the early hours. Held back just enough to collect his thoughts. This just makes it easier.
He takes his own shoes off and softly lowers his duffle bag, holds the flowers in his hand feeling like a fool with their first crush.
Which is true, he supposes.
The apartment smells like you, your scent lingering in the air. Sweet and fragrant.
With quiet, measured steps, he strides through his home. Something in him knows where you are. Senses your presence like it calls out to him.
Gun sees you fast asleep on the sofa. Wrapped in a blanket and remote control held loosely. In the background, the TV hums, low and almost muted. Casting everything in artificial light.
He plucks the remote from your hand, rests it and the camellias on the floor. 
You stir at the disturbance.
“Gun?” you murmur, sitting up, trying to see if it really is him.
“I’m back.” He tucks your hair behind your ear with a gentle hand.
You blink the sleep out of your eyes until they adjust and focus. 
Gun Park. 
That face and company you have so dearly missed.
“Hi,” you whisper, shy and face blooming under the intensity of his gaze. 
“Hi.” 
The moment is desperately sentimental and soft and everything that Gun isn’t, but completely is with you. 
"These are for you," and he nods at the bouquet on the floor and you burn crimson. 
Pink camellias. Longing. You wonder if Gun even realised. But even if he didn't... he got flowers. For you. You don't know what to do with how full your heart is.
"T-thank you."
Gun gives you a small smile, the one that makes his eyes crinkle and light up, and you smile back. That smile he has missed more than he thought he was capable of.
His eyes drop and follow the curve of your lips, the slant of your mouth.
He can’t resist. 
Gun curls his hand under your chin, running his thumb along your bottom lip, feeling your small intake of breath as you gasp.  He has never wanted anyone, anything more.
“I’ve missed you,” you whisper as Gun leans his forehead against yours.
“Me too.” 
You glance up from his lips to find his black eyes staring back. 
What should have been intimidating from the start, yet you never thought it was. How can you ever find them intimidating when he looks at you like you’re everything.
Gun tilts forward, just slightly. 
Enough to slot your mouths together. A tender caress of the lips. 
Tentative, like you’re fragile and could break any second. Like this is fragile and could break any second.
This will never do, you think.
So you kiss back with all the energy you have, throwing your heart into it, desperate and a little messy-
Until Gun matches you beat for beat. Smiling and humming against your lips.
Until he’s the one taking charge. Kissing you deep and passionate as you hit the back of the sofa, arms wrapping around you. Rough and a different type of desperate, teeth nipping at your lips.
Gun wants you and he wants this and-
He pulls back, leaving you chasing and whining. 
He’s got so much on this, so much to lose. He’s never been in this position before.  Never wanted something so at odds with everything he has ever known. 
Never done this before, feeling a fear that he's not sure he likes.
His gaze pierces into your soul.
“I need this to be real.” 
Is that all? 
And you tell him,
"It is. This was real from the very beginning."
Your pour everything into the next kiss and Gun has no choice but to believe you.

MPW: Segasaki & Yoh - Language Analysis Part 1
Subtitle Corrections: EP 1 || EP 2 || EP 3
My Personal Weatherman is a story about the relationship between Segasaki and Yoh, so rather than being introduced to the characters, we the audience are dropped right into the middle of their relationship, and the only way we learn about the characters as individuals is through the way they interact with each other, and how that contrasts with how they interact with the people around them.
The show does an incredible job of keeping the portrayal of their relationship consistent across the use of character design, wardrobe, lighting, cinematography, acting choice, directorial choices and of course language use. But not everyone who watches has equal access to that last one, so I try to be as detailed as possible in my subtitle corrections posts. I'm also a bit of a language nerd. Now, I want to get into their actual relationship, because I think there is a lot of information about how they feel towards each other that's just getting missed. Also I love them and this is how I spazz.
This post is the first of four in which I hope to show how the dynamic between Segasaki and Yoh is reflected in the way they speak - specifically, in the way they address each other, and the style shifting, or speech level shifts that they both demonstrate with each other, using scenes from Ep 1 - 3. I'll be using my own translations for this, some of which differ from the Eng subs. (Please bear with the nerdiness - I don't want to assume how much people know about Japanese)

Prefacing this by saying that this language analysis is made specifically in the context of Segasaki and Yoh's relationship. There is a power imbalance here both in terms of social hierarchy (senpai/kouhai, age gap, successful/non-successful) as well as self-image (self-confident/self-conscious). Now, most of the time we see this manifested linguistically as the party with more social power using casual language forms, whilst the one with less power remains polite or formal. However, there is much more to human interaction than that, as we see in MPW where both Segasaki and Yoh shift in and out of Speech Styles often, depending on what they want to say and accomplish, as well as their emotional state.
1) Quick & Dirty Guide To Speech Styles/Formality Levels
Formality/Politeness is a spectrum and is expressed mostly through grammar and tone (sorry for the shitty word doc screencap):

1) desu/masu = formal/polite. Standard go to with the anyone you meet. 2) Generally speaking, the longer the sentence/the more syllables you hear, the more polite the sentence 3) The less direct you can be, the more polite you will sound 4) Word contractions (tsuzukereba -> tsuzukerya) = informal + impolite (but not always rude) 5) Slurred end vowels (iranai -> iranee) = informal + mostly rude, but not always (you just sound uncouth) 6) Most words have "formal", "informal" or even "rude" variations 7) CONTEXT DETERMINES EVERYTHING Btw when I say "speaks roughly" or uses "rough speech", I mostly mean (4) + (5)
2) Speech Styles and Shifting Between Them
tl;dr Japanese Speech Styles function like the verbal equivalent of personal space - the more formal/polite the level, the bigger the circle of personal space you maintain. Shifts in speech styles indicate: 1) perceived changes in vertical and/or horizontal distance 2) the assumption of a position/role of the speaker in relation to the listener 3) changes in emotional state/the desire to convey emotion 4) the consideration of "polite company" In this post we will look at examples of the first one - Vertical and Horizontal Distance.
Speech Styles: The Long Version (English Speaker POV)
Consider the way you speak if you were to say, give an important presentation in front of potential clients, versus the way you'd speak to an acquaintance you ran into on the street vs the way you'd speak to your closest friends. Different situations call for different ways of speaking - you're more likely to speak in full sentences and pronounce your words clearly for the first situation, and say "yes" instead of "yep" or "uh huh". You're also more likely to be blunt/direct with your friends than you are with clients - "You know ILU but do not under any circumstances buy that ugly ass shirt".
These context-dependent changes in speech patterns are similar to the changes in speech styles/formality levels in Japanese. Think of speech styles as the verbal equivalent of personal space. The more formal/polite the level, the bigger the circle of personal space you maintain. Dropping a level when you shouldn't is the verbal equivalent of invading someone's personal space and can make people uncomfortable and sometimes even angry. In Japan, the baseline "distance" with the average person is the way you would speak as if you were giving a presentation. Dropping to casual/informal speech might be tolerated (just like how you can tolerate someone sitting close to you and asking some questions, but it's uncomfortable), especially if you guys are around the same age, but dropping to "what's up bitcheees" when you should be at "hey how're you doing" basically tells the other person "I don't have even the basic level of respect for you".
In the same vein, the closer you are to someone, the more welcome you are in their personal space, and thus the lower the level of formality/politeness you'll keep with them. You trust that even if you speak bluntly, they'll understand you aren't trying to insult them. When and to what extent you drop a level is usually negotiated between individuals (either directly or indirectly). Once a level of casualness is established, your friends are going to look at you funny if you suddenly get all formal with them. They might even come ask if anything's wrong, or if you're angry at them or why you sound "cold". These shifts in speech levels therefore mark more than just the vertical distance between two people (ie, differences in social hierachy), they mark the horizontal distance (ie, how close people of the same "in-group" are to each other) too.
Having said that, there are times when you will shift to a more formal tone even with your friends or family - for example, when you're hosting a game at a large party and want to explain the game rules to everyone, you might enunciate your words better or keep the jokes to the minimum in order to convey the information is clearly and efficiently as possible. Similarly, if you've been appointed the leader in a group project and need people to pay attention and listen, you might change your tone of voice to command attention. In other words, when you assume a particular position, the way you speak changes too.
Finally, the way you speak to your friends/family in the presence of others (or "polite company", as they used to say) might also change - you might have no qualms cursing up a storm with your best buddy at the bar, but you might do your best to avoid being too vulgar when you're in front of their parents or your boss/university professor.
3) Segasaki and Yoh: Vertical & Horizontal Distance
Segasaki and Yoh are part of the same "in-group" in that they are in a relationship, so the horizontal distance between them is very small and before sunny days it's a negative distance - this is shown in how both Segasaki and Yoh use informal speech with each other (they generally omit the desu/masu forms aka use plain forms, and both use the informal pronoun "俺/ore" for "I" with each other).

That said, there is also a hierarchy within that relationship (though their individual perceptions of that vertical distance differs) which stems not only from the nature of their living agreement, but also is likely to have carried over from their university days, when they shared a senior/junior relationship. Thus, generally speaking, Segasaki speaks quite roughly with Yoh whilst Yoh tends to use polite forms more often. Keep in mind however, that Japanese is a gendered language, and "rough speech" tends to be seen as a masculine speech pattern and can sometimes be normal between close male friends/family (otherwise, it is the verbal equivalent of getting up in someone's face and pushing them). The key here is that Yoh sticks to an informal, but more polite level than Segasaki does, and it is that difference that shows the power differential.
Horizontal Distance aka "We're Very Close"

Despite Yoh's very valid complaint that Segasaki takes "man-of-few-words" to the next level (itself a liberty you'd only take with someone close to you), Segasaki only drops to rude forms in Ep 1 once:

晩飯いらねぇ(banmeshi iranee) - slurred vowel [literally - "dinner, not needed"] Banmeshi is a more informal way of saying dinner (normal = yuu gohan). Despite the slurred vowel, this sentence is not dismissive nor rude - it's what you'd expect between close friends/family.
In Ep 2 we hear Segasaki speak a lot more roughly to Yoh, as below, and of course during the almost-argument. But though his words are rough his intonation is often soft and he's quite tender with his touch. So, we can see that Segasaki isn't being disrespectful per se - he's not speaking roughly because he sees Yoh as beneath him in the social hierarchy - rather, he's demonstrating intimacy, familiarity and possessiveness, all at once. In fact, the more possessive he feels of Yoh, the more he drops his levels. As mentioned earlier, you only do this with people in your "in-group", with whom you know will understand you aren't insulting them.

遅くなるからいらねぇっつっただろう (osokunaru kara iranee ttsutta darou) - slurred vowel, word contraction, informal end particle [I told you I wouldn't need it cause I'd be late right?] Though somewhat in keeping with Segaski's curtness, this is still a pretty harsh sounding line - but note how Yoh doesn't seem offended or intimidated in the slightest - he understands that Segasaki is tired after a long day, and in return Segasaki softens his tone when he next asks "What did you make?"
Vertical Distance
It's easy to focus on Segasaki's use of rough, assertive langauge as an indicator of vertical distance, and I pointed out quite a few scenes in Ep 3 where he ends off what is essentially an order with assertive sentence-final particles. But focusing on this alone gives the mistaken impression that relationships with vertical distance go one way only - down - when in fact they are bidirectional. There is a mutual dependency between both parties, as we see clearly in MPW. Linguistically, this is portrayed through Yoh's choices to shift up a speech level.

Just like how Segasaki is introduced to the audience through his proposal direct, informal and very forceful speech style, the first interaction we see Yoh have with Segasaki is a proper, standard greeting:
おかえりなさい (okaerinasai) [Welcome back] Okaerinasai is the full, proper way to say this, but a more casual and common way to say this would simply be "okaeri". See Ep 3 for discussion on standard greetings.
When Yoh thinks about Segasaki in his head, he often uses rough speech the same way Segasaki does, including the rude pronouns "aitsu/koitsu (that guy/this guy)", and yet when he speaks directly to Segasaki, he maintains an informal but still polite/neutral speech style. He rarely shifts down to rude forms, barely coming close even when drunk and emotional, but he does often switch up to a more polite level. In the above example, Yoh uses the full standard greeting in response to Segasaki's unspoken request:
俺、帰ってるんだけど (ore, kaetterun dakedo) [I've already come back, you know] Ending with "dakedo" implies that speaker is going to follow up with something, usually a request or a question. In Japanese, this request/question is often left out, because the context given prior to "dakedo" is usually enough for the listener to fill in the gaps themselves. In this case, Segasaki might want a greeting or dinner, but at the very least, it's clear he wants Yoh's attention.

We know the standard greeting earlier was a style shift upwards because later in the episode, when Yoh says good night, he uses the casual version "oyasumi" instead of the full "oyasuminasai".
Even outside of standard phrases, Yoh's baseline is informal but not rude:

あ、いま準備する (Ah, ima junbi suru) - plain form [Ah, I'll prepare it now]
Probably the most telling is in Ep 3, when he's caught off guard whilst folding laundry.

あ、なに? (Ah, nani?) - plain form [Oh! What?] He answers Segasaki naturally, with just a word, as opposed to a proper “Hai/Yes?”, which he’s done sometimes when he’s unsure of himself, or if he's addressed directly.
So, we've established that Yoh’s baseline with Segasaki is informal but not rude - he feels comfortable enough with Segasaki to default to casual speech, but he acknowledges the power differential between them by simultaneously accepting Segasaki's rough speech as well as not dropping to it himself. This also tells us that the shifts up to formal/polite speech are deliberate and mean something. In EP 2, the shift demonstrated his insecurity surrounding his jealousy and their lack of physical affection, whereas in EP 3, he does it as a way to convey his gratitude.
In the next part, we'll look at how both Segasaki and Yoh use speech style shifts to convey emotion as well as to assume a particular position. Hope you enjoyed this!

Ex Diris and the Card Spread
Just read the Ex Diris lore entry exotic grande launcher from the season pass and haven't seen anyone try to do a breakdown of the cards and how they align with cartomancy yet, cause I am gnawing at this.
So, the Deck of Whispers is an oracle deck (think tarot, but the cards and meanings are different).
One of the ways that people engage with cartomancy is by developing spreads, aka the order you draw the cards, and the places that you put them, add to the meaning of the cards.
Eg, a three card spread of past, present, future. The first card you draw represents the past, the second is the present, the third is the future.
I don't believe Eris' spread has an exact match (please let me know if it does), but it is very very close to the Celtic Cross Spread, particularly the expanded version.
I'll break down the spread, the meanings, and the cards below. There's very little theory crafting, but a lot more meaning finding, so I hope you enjoy!
The Labyrinthos link above is a very good full breakdown, but tl;dr, each card in this Celtic Cross Spread has a different meaning, which I'll get into (at a basic level), and it looks something like this:

Card 1 - Your current situation [Blades]
Eris interpretes this to mean Sword Logic. Yes, but I think it's also about the First Knife, and the Final Shape, aka this whole fight / saga is centered around whether or not the Witness is right.
Card 2 - The Challenge / Obstacle [Adherent]
Eris clearly sees this as Xivu Arath. I agree, an Adherent could also be known as a Disciple. The meaning also supports it: she's the threat of the season, the thing we have to overcome first.
Card 3 - Foundation / Cause of the situation [Sisters]
Eris clearly sees this as the Hive God's first selves. I agree, as the meaning supports this: who the Hive Gods once were is the foundation of who they have become.
Whilst this feels like a limited meaning (there are more causes than just them), I think it's a deliberate choice to set up the next card:
Card 4 - The / Your Past [The Harbinger]
Eris can only see this as herself. The spread meaning becomes tenuous here, perhaps because she is the Oracle and from the past she foretells the future? Perhaps it is her card because it is her past that is in play? Or perhaps it's because the writers wanted to have that very interesting line
Perhaps now she counted among those sisters. Savathûn, Xivu Arath, and Eris Morn. A game between siblings. A love that sharpens.
I've got a bit of a crack theory developing about this (particularly with what implies about her role as a Navigator), but that's for later.

This is also when the normal spread and Eris' differ. Traditionally, you then place Card 5, which represents the present. Eris skips this (perhaps because she doesn't need to know what's happening now), and goes straight to
Card 6 - Near Future [The Lie]
Eris wonders if this is the Guardians, or maybe the lie of the Deep. From a simple standpoint, perhaps it could just mean that the future is a lie, or that to know the Future is to know a lie? Or, following the way each card is an entity, perhaps this is the Witness? After all, they're going to be in our near future.

This is when the normal and Eris' spreads diverge again. Sometimes, at the end of a reading, people add three or four more cards across the bottom, which shows the more subtle influences around the person doing the reading. Eris does this halway through, creating:

Because she does it halfway through, I think Cards 6, 7, and 8 are clarifiers of the three columns beneath them, rather than the reading as a whole. (I'm also toying with the idea that they could also represent the Surface, the Sky, and the Deep, but eh)
(Lmao I've just realised that because I made the second graphic, now the numbers don't align, and I'm going to repeat Card 6 and now use the numbers from Eris' spread, sorry!)
Card 6 - aligned with Harbinger/Eris [Liminal]
Imo these match, Eris is currently occupying the liminal space between Hive and not-Hive, Light and Dark.
Card 7 - aligned with Sisters [Ascension]
Again, a match, their rise from being sisters to godhood.
Card 8 - aligned with The Lie [Lacuna]
Now, a lacuna is a gap, particularly where there should be, or once was, something. Eris saw it as part of a Guardian's Light, but I think it's specifically her Light - and the fact that she no longer has it.
She had not held it for centuries. The Hive sisters below beckoned more loudly than the Light did.
Aligned with The Lie, either she is tempted to fill it with the Lie (aka the Darkness), or the fact that she doesn't have it is the Lie (?).

Then we get to the final four cards, also known as the Staff.
Card 9 - Current approach / Your influence [The Witch]
Eris is torn between Savathun and herself, and I think that's reflected in what the meaning of the card could be. I'm leaning towards Savathun, because it's highly unusual to have two cards representing one person in a spread, and because she is, you know, the Witch Queen.
Also, that which is influencing us and dictating our approach right now is Savathun. So if we continue with our current approach, we will continue up the staff/column of cards to:
Card 10 - What you need to know / External influence [The Truth]
This is a fun card because it states The Truth, then Eris goes and says
There were too many truths for any one to triumph.
This is a very interesting line to me, and immediately brought to mind the final Veil Log, the Von Neumann-Wigner hypothesis mentioned, and this breakdown from Reddit. Tl;dr the Light is about creating possibilities, and the Darkness is about collapsing all possible states into one reality.
I also find Eris' use of the word triumph interesting - what will the final truth (final shape) of the universe be?
Card 11 - Hope / Fear [Lament]
Eris sees this as Oryx's death. I immediately thought of The Lament sword from Beyond Light. The sword was a gift from Clovis Bray to Banshee, due to his regret at not caring about the living whilst he was alive. In it, he states
Stay alive. For legacy.
However, when we activate the Clovis Bray AI, he threatens to kill Banshee. His initial lament is forgotten. Similarly, Savathun and Xivu Arath both once died, and Oryx brought them back.
So, these combine in two interesting ways; that of fear of total loss then rejection upon regaining it, and perhaps a fear/hope of sword logic being true.
Card 12 - Outcome [The Wish]
The particle The Wish feels important, and my immediate reaction was The Last Wish or Eris' Wish? Now Eris' was in the past, and I think both the meaning (Outcome) and Eris' interpretation suggest that this is something that will occur.
Eris had wished before. It had led her here. Would she be asked to wish again? What else would her desire wrought?
This post breaks down those lines really well. Or perhaps it is about the Last Wish, fulfilling it, that of the fireteam wishing to keep the Dreaming City / Awoken/Humanity safe?
A wish is desire, the greatest power in this universe.
Which is pretty much a direct quote from the Last Wish cinematic. This also reminds me of the reddit post, as being able to choose your reality feels like a pretty darn great power.

Eris' interpretations of these cards are built on each other, like a tower working up. A Witch, from whom Truth flows, which causes Lament, to the final outcome of The Wish.
This could be the story of Eris, actually. She asked for the way out of the tunnels under the moon (knowledge, and truth), losing and gaining something in the process, to obtain the wish of being free.
But also, according to Labyrinthos, with the staff (this column of four cards),
We learn how the context of this situation can affect the reader's life outside the situation, and also - how to change it, if desired.
I think these cards are not just for Eris, but for the story/season - the wider picture, and also how it may change later.

I also think that these cards do a really good job of bringing together a lot of different areas of Destiny story together - from Forsaken and the Last Wish, to Lament and Beyond Light, with the Hive and Witch Queen.

Loki: an analysis on how his sentences get interrupted and how this hints at Lokius
Season 2 Episode 1 spoilers ahead.
In Season 1 Episode 4, at around the end of the episode, Loki initiates a ‘speech’ towards Sylvie.

In this scene, it was implied that Loki wanted to confess his romantic feelings towards Sylvie, since throughout the entire episode, everything was pointing towards them having a romantic relationship. Aside from that, the entirety of Episodes 5 and 6 of Season 1 were gearing towards their kiss in the finale.
Now before he can get his confession out though, Loki gets interrupted by Renslayer, who prunes him and physically transports him to another dimension.

In Season 2 Episode 1, Loki has been slipping through time in the TVA. To remedy this, Mobius, OB and Loki formulate a plan. Before he sets off to put the plan in action (to prune himself), Loki has a moment with Mobius.

Before he could say what he wanted to say, though, he gets physically transported away, again.

In the first instance with Sylvie, it fully points towards a romantic confession. In the second one with Mobius though, it wasn’t clear what Loki wanted to say.
However, user @/sherlokius on Twitter pointed out that the Lokius theme (from the Season 1 soundtrack by Natalie Holt) plays in the scene with Loki and Mobius mentioned above.

Now I’m not sure if this is intended or not, but I did some digging on the Lokius soundtrack and the scene.
The Lokius soundtrack is in D minor (correct me if I’m wrong, my music theory is shit). I cannot be sure what the tonality is in the Loki and Mobius scene mentioned above, but it is probably in G minor because of the F# after the three notes that play during their conversation (which aligns with the harmonic minor rule), so I was convinced that the Lokius soundtrack wasn’t playing during the scene.
However, (and I might be reaching HARD on this, but hear me out). In ‘Lokius’ (the soundtrack), there’s a string solo that starts on a G, and then the background strings play a B flat chord and then an A chord. Attached is the moment in the track for your reference.
In the ‘confession’ scene, there’s three prominent notes in the soundtrack while Loki is speaking to Mobius — G, B flat and A. (i can’t attach the video here because Tumblr won’t allow me to attach more than one video in one post, but its timestamp is 31:32 into Season 2 Episode 1.)
So if we really want to fit the narrative that the Lokius track was actually being played in the scene, I would go so far as to say that a variation of it was playing. Similar chords, similar notes. Besides, multiple users on Twitter mentioned that they could hear it.
So what does that mean?
With the knowledge of a) that the scene is a parallel between Loki/Sylvie and Loki/Mobius, and b) a variation of the Lokius soundtrack is playing, we can infer that there are some implied Lokius shenanigans going on here in Season 2, and that Loki’s interrupted ‘confession’ might just be a love confession. Now I don’t know if this parallel is deliberate, but you gotta admit, there’s been a whole lot of amazing Loki and Mobius interactions this season, so… I’m gonna accept whatever we get gratefully. Beggars can’t be choosers, right?
