On Minfilia

When you take Minfilia at face value, she’s honestly a good character. And her writing is consistent enough that I can’t completely say that the way the community reacted to her was due to it but at the same time... it kinda is, in my opinion, and most of the arguments given to “hate on her” by people are mis-attributed griefs with the storytelling itself or the gameplay.

(The way some choose to mis-attribute it speak more of those people than of the story or devs, though.)

To me, Minfilia is a just and kind woman, if a bit politically naive, who tries her hardest to fill in the shoes of Louisoix when it’s very much not what she signed up for in creating the Path of the Twelve. It’s a hell of a role to take on at 22 (time of the Calamity, since she’s 27 in ARR) and she did an admirable job with it. You can understand why those who’ve known her for a long time feel like she’s incredible, given the facts.

But if you’re not a Legacy player, you don’t know those stakes, you don’t know her, and she doesn’t know your character either (she recognizes Legacy WoLs from what I've gathered).

So your actual introduction to Minfilia goes like this: you get told by Momodi that a secret organization is interested in hiring you and to go to Vesper Bay. You go there and speak to Tataru.

The named Scion depends on where you started: Thancred for Ul'dah, Y'shtola for Limsa, Yda and Papalymo for Gridania. It's not Minfilia who recruits you, it's them. She just gets to make it official because she's the boss and got the last word.

And not only that but you've traveled to the town, then get to pass three doors (and two loading screens) in total before meeting her: to enter the building, to go to the basement and, finally, to enter her office where she's talking to the main Scions.

Which seems entirely trivial but I feel like it create a pre-existing distance before you even get to meet Minfilia.

In the Solar, she introduces herself, then immediately puts some distance between you and her by walking behind her desk—ironically while telling you that you're amongst friends—and starts her speech about the Scions, the Echo, the Primals and the fact that your Echo is especially strong. A speech she ends with this (notice the crossed arms—distance, again):

The next cutscene is about the perks of the job, settling once and for all that your relationship with her, even though she calls you friend, is transactional and hierarchical.

Which is fine, I'm not complaining. But she's our boss, which sets her apart from every other character in the story, Scions included.

The next hours are literally spent executing her orders, going back and forth between Vesper Bay and wherever she sends you (and we didn't have the aetheryte tickets until patch 5.3) until she gets abducted.

We meet quite a lot of NPCs who tell us that she's a great diplomat (something we didn't get to see so far since she doesn't accompany us on our diplomatic mission to talk to the Sylphs about Ramuh) and talented to bring people together (which is probably true but always happens off screen). We don't get to see it until well after they made her go from our boss to a damsel in distress we need to save.

To quote Erenville: first impressions last.

Especially when the story doesn't give you opportunities to change it for hours of gaming time.

She's not as passive as people tend to remember, but they botched her introduction to non-legacy players, in my opinion.

So I can't say it's entirely fair to pretend there's no reason to dislike her, or at least to not care much about her. There are other characters who play a similar role to her up to a point: the Exarch for example. But the Exarch goes, literally, outside to meet with us. We get to see him deal with Ranjit and the threat of Eulmore. By the time he needs saving, we've seen what he can do, even discounting his help in the first dungeon. I don't think he would have received such a warm reception if he'd just been waiting for us passively in the Ocular for the first half of Shadowbringers.

It's worth mentioning that the writers were working on the 1.X patches at the same time they were writing ARR, though. And to me, it feels like they either forgot or didn't care that new players wouldn't have a pre-existing rapport with Minfilia.

After all, Louisoix tells her in one of the short stories to wait for "one who bears the light". When we meet her in the Solar, we doom her: her role was to serve as a bridge between 1.0 and 2.0. To wait for us.

And we're here now.

(I don't think they meant to keep her around, even without the general disliking of her that players had—and that's probably why the twins were here from the start.)

You recoil as your boisterous colleague all but shouts in your face, bringing you out of your work related reverie.

"You're coming out tonight, right?”

You quickly hit save on your document and swivel your chair around to face them.

They are perching on bare space next to your keyboard. Between the invasion of your space, and the wall behind you, you begin to feel uncomfortably boxed in. Yet maybe that is the point.

"Umm..."

"Please, honey." Out come the puppy dog eyes. "You haven't been out with us in so long."

You are squirming like an introvert in an improvisation drama workshop but you do it internally; there is no way you are going to let them know how much they are triggering you right now.

"I guess I could go for one drink." You compromise.

There's a squeal of delight that causes several people to stare at you both from across the open plan room. You long to turn invisible.

"Okay, so we'll be in reception around 17:30. And don't even think about changing your mind and sneaking off home like you usually do."

They waggle a finger at you in teasing admonishment.

"I don't sneak off," you say quietly.

"You kinda do, honey. Have done every day for months. Everyone thought it was really weird."

What you really wanted to say in this moment was: Well, next time, everyone should mind their own fucking business.

But instead you go for the more diplomatic: "I had a lot going on at home."

Their expression is the epitome of pity. "Oh, honey. You want to talk about it later?"

You almost laugh out loud. There was no way you were ever going to tell anyone you worked with about your break up and how it led to your encounters with The Sandman. In fact, it was probably better to tell no one in your life about Morpheus.

It has been 19 nights since you had seen him last. As predicted, you have really missed him and your thoughts often stray to his wellbeing.

Was he doing okay after all that he divulged to you? Had it actually been a good move to put distance between yourselves?

In your most regretful moments, you reassure yourself that he has at least Lucienne and Matthew to talk to, if not others. But it's a difficult task with the guilt that surfaces every time you think of his forlorn face.

You know that guilt is one of your all-consuming emotions; it was just trying to convince your taunting inner voice that the guilt would be much keener if you were a proven distraction for him.

You give your colleague a jokey answer: "Talk about my problems on a Friday night? Definitely not."

They laugh way more exuberantly than your reply called for but at least you are moving the discussion in the right direction. A direction that hopefully meant they would leave you in peace to finish your lukewarm cup of tea and continue your research.

Taking advantage of the lull in words you jump in with a conversation closer.

"So, I'll see you by the front desk at 17:30?"

"I'm so excited!" They sing, grabbing your hand. "This is going to be so good for you."

You plaster on your best fake smile. Perhaps if you tried hard enough, you might actually enjoy yourself. And if not, then at least you would be able to say that you had shown your face.

The bar round the corner from your building is heaving with people dressed in a similar category of attire to you: Office wear. Completely appropriate. Somewhat restrictive. Devoid of self-expression.

Lanyards hang from 90% of the necks you can see; the only real splash of vibrancy in a sea of charcoal grey, pallid white and navy blue.

You stay close to the colleague who coerced you into coming and sip at an orange juice while trying to follow the group’s conversation through your mild anxiety.

About 45 minutes in, there's a delight filled vocalisation that grabs your attention. A couple walks hand in hand towards a party of people already situated at a large table. You catch glimpses of their side profiles between the heads and shoulders of other individuals.

One of the pair, you realise with a sickening drop of your stomach, is your ex.

You shouldn't be surprised to see them here, this is their local. It was where you met, glued to your seat in the corner at your office Christmas party while your colleagues insisted loudly from the bar that you needed another drink.

You had already had way more than you could handle by that point, walking the line between drunk and sick, when a stranger sat down next to you with an unopened can of tonic water in their hand.

You had thought in that moment that maybe they were a guardian angel sent to save you from your tipsiness, and when you started to find you had things in common, you were truly convinced that something celestial was afoot. You had talked for hours into the early morning and texted all the next day. Moved in within six months and broke up just after two years.

Nosiness getting the better of you, you leave your memories and adjust your standing position to get a better view of them and their new partner.

Everyone is standing up and hugging in turn and then something happens that makes your brain stop processing.

The proffering of a left hand towards the centre of the table.

The very same one that had been presented to you some 5 months earlier.

That was all it took for them to move on and propose to someone else. 5 months.

You can't bear to witness anymore.

Your ears can't ignore the situation however.

“Let me see it!” A voice cries, followed by a chorus of swooning.

The excited sounds in response to the diamond set band of silver echo in your mind as you walk towards the bathroom.

Sobs bubble up as you twist the lock on one of the stalls.

A multitude of sorrowful emotions are enveloping you, yet you are unsure as to why. You had turned down the marriage proposal. You had said no to trying for a baby. You had ended things. And despite that you can’t help but feel betrayal and grief at their rushed actions.

You begin to question whether it was always just the idea of settling down that most appealed to your ex. And if that were true, did they ever sincerely want you. Or were you, like their new partner, just a means to an end. There would be no way of knowing without a direct confrontation and you definitely don't want to do that. You need to leave as soon as possible.

With blurred vision, you're reaching into your pocket to find your phone and order a taxi. You normally walk home from work but you don't think it wise to do so in your current vulnerable state.

The app estimates 30 minutes; usually you would stay inside for the duration of taxi wait times however you cannot stand the thought of being spotted by them.

You slip outside and stand in the summer evening sunshine.

The ride home is painful. The driver keeps chancing looks at you in the rear-view mirror. Not surprising really, you haven't stopped sniffling since the moment you flopped down onto the back seat.

You manage to squeak out a sentence of gratitude at the other end.

Despite it being only 19:30, you know that you need to tell Morpheus of your threat-inducing situation to the Dreaming immediately and so your rush to get to bed is feverous.

Outerwear is discarded in the hallway, makeup quickly removed and pyjamas thrown on. Skincare and teeth brushing is a tad less hasty however, you end up in bed within 15 minutes of entering the door.

You call his name in a broken whisper.

“I’m really sorry. Something’s happened.”

You close your eyes and wait.

The cottage materialises around you with its crackling fire and pattering rain.

Morpheus is there instantly, forgoing formalities, entering the space without knocking on the door.

He stops a few paces from you.

You can instantly feel his soothing energy; combined with the tranquillity of your surroundings, you know you are safe yet you can’t stop the anguished noises you make every time you take a breath.

He moves slowly, watching you cry, approaching like you are a baby deer that might bolt at any second.

Morpheus speaks your name tenderly.

You look up at his beautiful face, the expression on his features a reflection of your own pain portrait.

He is feeling for you.

Desperation to be held by someone takes over all logic. You practically throw yourself into his personal space.

As with all physical contact that has been initiated by you in previous times, he stiffens in the initial moments.

But you keep your arms around his neck regardless. You need to be close to him.

Then, slowly but surely, he begins to emulate your stance.

The feeling of his arms snaking around your back has your eyes closing in relief.

"Can you stop the nightmares again, please?" You ask shakily.

"I have already done so," he whispers as he pulls you further into his embrace.

1 DECEMBER - Catherine and William visted Greentown Labs and Roca Incorporated in Chelsea. They later attended an East Boston Climate Resiliency event at Piers Park. Subsequently, Catherine held a Meeting via telephone with Professor Marc Brackett (Founder and Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence). Afterwards, Catherine and William took part in rehearsals for the Earthshot Awards to be held the next Day.

2 DECEMBER - Catherine attended a Reception at the Four Seasons Hotel along with William. Afterward, she visited Harvard Center for the Developing Child. In the evening, The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the Earthshot Prize Awards 2022 at MGM Music Hall. Following this for their last engagement in Boston they attended a Reception at Fenway Park before departing Boston International Airport for the United Kingdom. Behind the Scenes photos of Catherine and William during the rehearsals the previous day were released by Kensington Palace.

3 DECEMBER - Catherine and William arrived at Heathrow Airport in London following their working trip to Boston.

U.S. legislators, key to the sale of dozens of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, have indicated that they are receptive to the proposal, according to a report published on Thursday.

The matter was complicated by the purchase of Ankara of the advanced Russian anti-aircraft system S-400, which led to a continuous dispute with Washington that resulted in sanctions and the expulsion of Turkey from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.

"Several important legislators" who were instrumental in removing Turkey from the F-35 program told the Defense News website that they are now potentially inclined to approve the sale of 40 F-16 fighter jets and 80 kits to modernize the existing fleet of the Turkish Air Force.

The apparent bipartisan opening to the agreement comes after Congress and the government praised Turkey's diplomatic efforts with Russia and the supply of necessary weapons to Ukraine during Moscow's ongoing attack on its Eastern European neighbor.

"We hope that Turkey will continue alongside its NATO allies who are in tune with support for Ukraine as it defends its homeland," said the cabinet of Congressman Mike McCaul, the main Republican of the House Foreign Relations Committee.

"We hope that if the government seeks authorization from Congress for this sale, Turkey will still play a constructive role in the conflict, but also addressing concerns about Turkey's role in other global conflicts," he added.

The Turkish government made the request for the F-16s and modernization kits in October, and Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on April 8 that the negotiations were "progressing positively".

The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Adam Smith, an important Democrat, recognized the "need to find a way to" restore the bilateral relationship with Ankara.

"The president is probably right in terms of trying to balance this. It is difficult because the S-400 has complicated our relationship in several ways, but it is not a relationship from which we can move away," he said.

Still, Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, can block the sale, signaled a less willing view of the F-16s.

"At some point, we have to decide whether Turkey is the kind of NATO ally we expect or not," Menendez told the news site. "He acts contrary to our interests in a number of things. I think the government has to stop seeing the aspirational part of what we would like Turkey to be and realize that Turkey is under Erdogan."

He was referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Biden administration has on several occasions signaled its opening for sale, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who said last Thursday that foreign military sales to major U.S. partners, such as Turkey, should be accelerated and bureaucratic obstacles removed.

Asked during testimony in Congress about what the Biden administration can do "to eliminate bureaucracy and help our work with our allies such as Turkey and India," Blinken acknowledged that processes need to be accelerated both at the executive level and in Congress.

"I think we can and should do better in sales, especially how quickly we can do things, review things. I think that's up to us in the Executive. It is also up to Congress," he told the House Appropriations Committee.

Naz Durakoglu, the main employee of the State Department for legislative affairs, acknowledged last month in a letter to Congressman Frank Pallone the ongoing tensions over additional arms sales to Turkey, but maintained that the sanctions and the removal of Turkey from the F-35 fighter program represent “a significant price paid” for the acquisition of Russia's S-400 missile defense system.

He claimed that Israel "has been openly committing war crimes for 22 days", as he alleged a "similar mentality" was being shown to the Axis members during World War Two.

He said: "In the past they were massacring the Jewish people in the gas chambers and they were indeed wiping out whole regions with bombs." The Turkish premier then added: “A similar mentality is being shown in Gaza today.”
