I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.
Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.
In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

Edward England
Edward England was an Irish pirate who operated in the Caribbean, the Eastern Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean between 1717 and 1720 during the Golden Age of Piracy (1690-1730). Captain England’s successful but brief pirate career came to an end when he was marooned by his crew on the island of Mauritius in 1720.
Early Career
Captain England has his own chapter in the celebrated pirate’s who’s who, A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates, compiled in the 1720s. The book was credited to a Captain Charles Johnson on its title page, but this is perhaps a pseudonym of Daniel Defoe (although scholars are still debating the issue, and Charles Johnson may have been a real, if entirely unknown pirate expert). As with many other pirates, the General History is an invaluable source on England’s career, even if there are fictional additions to the factual information laboriously garnered from such sources as court records, official documents, and letters of the period.
Edward England’s real name was possibly Jasper Seager (or Seegar). Like many pirates of the period, England was obliged to join a pirate crew after the ship on which he was serving was captured. England had been an officer on a Jamaican sloop when it was taken by Christopher Winter, who was based at the pirate haven of New Providence in the Bahamas. The General History gives the following not unfavourable assessment of England’s character:
England was one of those men, who seemed to have such a share of reason, as should have taught him better things. He had a great deal of good nature, and did not want for courage; he was not avaricious, and always averse to the ill usage prisoners received: he would have been contented with moderate plunder, and less mischievous pranks could his companions have been brought to the same temper, but he was generally over-ruled. (114)
Following the successful attacks on pirates in their haven at New Providence (now Nassau) by Woodes Rogers, Governor of the Bahamas from 1717, England sailed across the Atlantic to continue his piracy elsewhere. Several merchant ships were captured in the Azores, Cape Verde Islands, and off the coast of West Africa.
In 1718, England himself obliged an otherwise honest man to turn pirate when he captured the Welshman Howell Davis who had been chief mate on a slave ship, the Cadogan of Bristol. The captain of the Cadogan was murdered, and Davis was given command of the slaver despite refusing to formally sign England’s ship’s articles and become a part of his pirate crew. Impressed with Davis’ courage, England allowed him to sail off. Davis ended up in Barbados where he was captured. Davis managed to escape prison, and he continued a pirate career on both sides of the Atlantic, a spree that ended with his death on Principe Island in 1719.
England was, for a time, an associate of the most successful of all pirates in the so-called Golden Age, Bartholomew Roberts (aka 'Black Bart' Roberts, c. 1682-1722). In the relatively small world of pirates, Roberts had taken over the crew of Howell Davis after the latter’s death. Roberts and England operated off the coast of Guinea, West Africa. England operated two ships: his own sloop and another prize renamed Victory. Command of the latter was given to John Taylor and together they raided the western coast of India and took more prize ships. When required, provisions were taken on board at the pirate base on Madagascar.

You may have seen Anthony Boyle on your screens recently as Harry Crosby in Apple tvs 'Masters of the air' or as Kevin Maxwell in 'Tetris', but where have you probably seen him before?
Before he rose to fame in 2016, he was in an episode of 'Game of thrones' as a Bolton Guard in the episode 'The laws of gods and men'. But he doesnt stay for long as he gets his throat cut.
His rise to fame started in 2016 when he landed the role of Scorpius Malfoy in the play 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' for which he was nominated for an Olivier and won. He went from a small local actor from Belfast to suddenly the main actor in a play that the world couldn't stop talking about. He spent three years running around in a blonde wig at the Palace theatre in London and the Lyric theatre in New York where the play is still shown to this day.
After this, he landed small roles such as David Donnely in 'Derry Girls', a comedy which is set in the town of Derry in Northern Ireland which is his home country. His friend, the writter of the show, approached him and asked him if he wanted to be in the show and he accepted, being in it for two episodes.
In 2018, he was cast as Jack Argyle in the BBC drama 'Ordeal by Innocence' which was written by Agatha Christie. A show about a family of adopted children who must work out who killed their mother, unfortunately, the blame is landed on Anthony Boyle's character.
In the same year, he played Liam Farrell in the drama series 'Come home' where he starred along side Christopher Eccleston. A mother unexpectedly abandons her husband and three children and they try to figure out what may have caused this.
In the year after, he played the role of Geoffrey Bache Smith in the biopic 'Tolkien' about the life of JRR Tolkien. Boyle plays one of thr actors closest friends through their time at school and during the war.
In 2020, he was in 'The plot against American' featuring Wynona Ryder. Based on the 2004 book by the same name, the story follows a Jewish working class family set in an alternate America where they watch popularist Charles Lindbergh, an aviator-hero and xenophobe, become President.
In 2021, he played Brian Wood in the true story of 'Danny Boy', a soldier who is accused of war crimes in Iraq.
2022 was a quiet year for Boyle as covid had stopped the production of most tv shows and movies but in 2023, Boyle starred along side Taron Egerton and Toby Jones as Kevin Maxwell in the biopic 'Tetris' which revolves around the game Tetris, its origins and how it became one of the most famous video games in history.
However, in 2024, Boyle seems to have won the lottery with four projects coming out this year already. The first, 'Masters of the air' where he plays an air sick navigator in world war two with Austin Butler. The series which is made by Apple tv is set to be released over two months from January 26th to March 15th.
And if you're not already sick of seeing his face, his new show (surprise surprise, on Apple tv) is set to release on March 15th. Boyle plays the famous actor John Wilkes Booth in 'Manhunt' who assasinated President Lincoln in 1865 and follows the days after this as the nation slides to a halt in the search for the actor.
He is then set to play Jack Barak in the Disney plus show 'Shardlake' which is set on the book by the same name. Set in the reign of King Henry VIII in the 16th century, Boyle plays former Cromwell henchman turned law clerk and investigator for the main character.
Boyle is also set to feature in the New York times best seller book adaptation say nothing which is about the struggles and troubkes in northern ireland which comes out this summer.
These are just some of the many tv shows, movies and theatre shows that Anthony Boyle has and will star in. When he was just starting out acting, he said that he would take any role that fit his description (white male with dark brown hair) meaning he was in alot of embarassing but funny stuff. One where he dresses up as a mummy for halloween and must escape a group of killer clowns, one where he plays a man who is inlove with a pillow and one where he plays a convict on the run in Northern Ireland and has to wear a dress and a wig to escape authorities. However, if you lived in Belfast in the late 2000s, you could probably see him lurking behind big Tescos with a plastic bag on his head.
It seems that Boyle is turning out to be a very promising actor with lots of work lined up. Infact, he is set to record a new show which is set in Scotland. He said on the British talk show 'Sunday Brunch' that he is looking forward to it and has to talk in a Scottish accent.

I make period drama style gifs. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

America’s rich tapestry of stories is woven into the fabric of its landscape, with many tales embedded in the place names of the cities and states. Understanding the meanings behind these names offers insights into the development of the land, its history, and its culture over the centuries. Not only does this deepen our appreciation of our surroundings, but it also enriches our vocabulary and occasionally aids in solving crossword puzzles, a sentiment strongly endorsed by WordTips.
Take, for example, Missoula, which translates to “River of Ambush” in Montana, evoking memories of inter-tribal conflicts. Similarly, Manchester, New Hampshire, derives its name from “Breast-like Hill,” harking back to the voluptuous mound upon which a Roman fort was constructed around 79 CE in Manchester, UK. Centuries later, Samuel Blodget, inspired by the barge canals of the British Manchester, spearheaded the construction of similar waterways in his New Hampshire town and suggested adopting its namesake.
But what about the rest of the U.S.? Armed with our etymology hats, we delved into dictionary country, scouring sources such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Online Etymology Dictionary, the Encyclopedia Britannica, the American Library Association, and regional news reports. Our quest uncovered the literal meanings behind the names of each U.S. state, its capital city, and 178 of America’s largest cities.
Literal Translations of State Names and Their Capital Cities Across the U.S.
Names sometimes transcend boundaries. Both the state of Kansas and Kansas City, MO, derive their names from the Kansas River, which, in turn, honors the Kanza tribe, translating as ‘People of the Southwind.’
Interestingly, there exists a lesser-known Kansas City within the state of Kansas itself. This city adopted its name from its Missouri counterpart, hoping to leverage the fame of the Missouri town. According to local history teacher Matt Beat, “KCK wanted to capitalize on the success of KCMO and essentially mislead visitors into believing they were in the authentic Kansas City.
While numerous state names honor Native history or describe geographical features, others carry traces of colonial influence. The Carolinas, for instance, owe their name to King Charles II and his father, Charles I. The territory was initially chartered by Charles II, who bestowed the name in honor of his father. Additionally, the capitals of both Carolinas pay homage to European explorers, with Sir Walter Raleigh and Christopher Columbus lending their names to these cities.
The Literal Translation of Major City Names in the Northwestern U.S.
In addition to the straightforward meanings of city names like ‘Anchorage’ (a place suitable for anchoring) and ‘Portland’ (land surrounding a harbor), the Northwestern U.S. boasts some lesser-known etymologies, both of Native and settler origin.
Honolulu, for instance, derives from the Hawaiian language: ‘hono’ meaning ‘port’ and ‘lulu’ meaning ‘calm.’ Interestingly, the name traces back to British Captain William Brown, who initially named the port Fair Haven upon his arrival in 1794. Before this, Hawaiians referred to the area as Ke ʻAwa O Kou, meaning ‘the harbor of Kou.’
Meanwhile, Boise, Idaho, takes its name from the French word for ‘wooded area.’ However, the name’s origins are influenced by English as well: fur traders passing through the region called it the Wooded River, a name later translated by French trappers.
When surveying the area in the 1830s, the French United States Army officer B.L.E. Bonneville had the final say, choosing French over English.

Many major cities in the Southwestern U.S. bear names that honor notable individuals. Reno, for instance, pays tribute to Jesse Lee Reno, a Virginia-born Union general who met his demise during the battle of Fox’s Gap. The official announcement regarding the city’s naming stated:
“The name of the new town on the C.P.R.R. at the junction of the contemplated branch road to Virginia City in Nevada, is Reno, in honor of General Reno, who fell gloriously fighting in defense of the flag against the assault of traitors in rebellion.”
Similarly, Orem, Utah, derives its name from Walter Orem, a prominent figure in mining and railroad development who constructed the state’s inaugural electric railroad. However, the town’s naming was more an act of flattery than gratitude towards Orem’s contributions. In 1919, as the town faced a critical juncture in its expansion efforts, requiring investment for incorporation and the establishment of a networked water system, it was named after Orem in hopes of securing his support. Prior to this, the area had been known as Provo Bench.

In September 1687, Henri Joutel noted in his writings: “We arrived at the said place called Chicagou which, according to what we were able to learn of it, has taken this name because of the quantity of garlic which grows in the forests in this region.”
Other accounts suggest that the name Chicago may have originated from the Algonquian word sheka:ko:heki, meaning “place of the wild onion,” or possibly from the Ojibwa word for skunk. Regardless of its precise origins, it appears that odor was a prominent characteristic of the area before the establishment of the town of Chicago in 1833.
Topeka, on the other hand, translates from the Kansa (Siouan) language as “A Good Place to Dig Potatoes.” The founders chose this name in 1855 with originality in mind. Fry W. Giles, a banker and city founder, described Topeka as “a name not found in the list of post offices of the United States, nor in any lexicon of the English language. It was novel, of Indian origin, and euphonious of sound.”

Understanding that Baton Rouge means “red stick” doesn’t require fluency in French. But why was Louisiana named “red stick”? In 1699, French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville stumbled upon the area and spotted a reddened pole adorned with sacrificial fish and bear heads by the Native inhabitants. This visual left an impression on d’Iberville, leading him to refer to the area as Baton Rouge when the French colonized it.
Among the most intriguing place names in the study is Memphis. The city took its name from the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, which translates to “enduring and beautiful” or “Place of Good Abode,” depending on interpretation. The founders, John Overton, James Winchester, and Andrew Jackson, were less concerned with etymology; they chose the name because both cities stand beside vast rivers.

Some city name translations in the Northeast are well-known or easy to understand, such as Philadelphia (from the Greek for “brotherly love”) or Portland (the land around a port). Others require a bit more digging.
Would you be able to identify the city name that translates to Botolph’s Stone if it wasn’t labeled on our map? Boston was named after a town in Lincolnshire, England, which, in turn, was named after Botolph, the patron saint of travelers. The second part of the name could derive from “stone” or perhaps from “tun,” the Old English word for village.
The Dutch colonized New Netherland, which included parts of present-day New York City, Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey, with the city of New Amsterdam located on today’s Manhattan Island.
However, in 1664, James II of England, the Duke of York, captured the island, leading to the city receiving its eventual name.
If that sounds odd and European, remember the city was briefly called New Orange when the Dutch briefly recaptured it in 1673.

The investigation delved into various aspects of etymology, considering cases where a state or city was named after a person or significant event, where the words in a location’s name evolved in meaning from an earlier version of English or another language, or according to the significance behind another location after which a U.S. state or city was named.
