How much do you think the Signal’s debut shook the supervillains, and indeed all criminals, of Gotham? He destroyed their longstanding definition of a Gotham vigilante. All the rules went out the window. From now on, apparently anything goes.
[Early morning in a plain, modest safehouse. Jonathon Crane cracks his eyes open, yawns, slowly gets up and groggily shuffles to the kitchen/dining area, where he takes out a cup and prepares to use the coffee machine. Behind him his scientific equipment and notes are arranged neatly on the counter. A relaxed Duke is taking photos of them.]
Duke: (jovially) Good morning.
Jon: Good morning.
Jon:
Jon: Who the hell are you?!
Duke: I’m the Signal! (pats symbol proudly) The newest hero in town.
Jon: (blinks, still half-asleep) Like… the Bat-Signal?
Duke: Yeah, I’ve got this whole light theme going on.
Jon: But - it - it’s 6:30 AM.
Duke: Yep. Turns out crime doesn’t just vanish when the sun comes up, so I patrol in the daylight hours. The night shift has seven people; the day shift should have at least one, right?
Jon: But you’re a Bat! Bats don’t do that!
Duke: Actually, some species of bat, like fruit bats, are diurnal. I got precedent.
Jon, on the verge of a breakdown: Okay, okay, look. I have lost a great deal of sleep lately evading capture by the frankly ridiculous number of vigilantes active at night. You’re a teenager, a student with a very strenuous job. Surely you understand what sleep deprivation feels like.
Duke: I do.
Jon: Just please, please let me have my coffee.
[A weighted pause. Duke narrows his eyes, then softens.]
Duke: You get one cup.
Jon: Thank you.
[He makes his cup of coffee and lovingly inhales the smell. Just as he’s about to drink it, Duke bats it out of his hand like a cat. It smashes on the floor.]
Jon: YOU -
[Duke quickly cuffs him.]
Duke: Stop! Making! Trauma: The Inhalant! That’s all you have to do, man!
***
[Duke is fighting Poison Ivy in her greenhouse of killer plants.]
Duke, popping out the blades in his escrima sticks: Your vines are no match for my bat-chet blades!
Ivy: Great, another one who puns.
[She sends a new wave of vines, but he gracefully slices and weaves through them. Too gracefully. His reflexes are faster than even Batman’s. Curious as scientists are wont to be, she halts her attack, and then suddenly, silently strikes with a vine straight at the back of his head. He cannot possibly sense it coming. He ducks.]
Ivy: Wait… oh God, you can’t predict movements before they happen with crazy extreme ninja training like Black Bat, can you? I’m not fighting another Bat like that. No way.
Duke: Oh, no, no, no, don’t worry. I’m not nearly as well-trained as Black Bat. I just have superpowers.
Ivy: You what?
Duke: I’m a metahuman. I’ve got superpowers.
Ivy: But you’re a Bat! Bats don’t do that!
Duke: I get that a lot.
Ivy: Well, what superpowers?
Duke: I’m not telling you all about my powers - I’m literally fighting you - but basically I can process light differently. Part of that is seeing where it’s been, the past, and where it will be, the future. I call it ghost vision.
Ivy: How far into the past and future? Hours? Months? Years? Can you see before your birth or after your death? Can you predict other people’s deaths? Watch the rise and fall of civilizations?
Duke, whose ghost vision currently goes under a minute both ways: That’s for me to know and you to… (stares into the middle distance) I believe, never find out.
Ivy: (raises hands) I’ll go to Arkham.
***
[Duke kicks open the door to Edward Nygma's hideout.]
Duke: Give it up, Riddler, I've got a... whoa.
[He trails off as he takes the space in. There are papers - plans, to-do lists, riddles, ciphers, trap and gadget blueprints, maps and more - everywhere, in stacks, folders and scattered loose across every surface. A bin in the corner is overflowing with crumpled pages. Intricate model traps line a shelf, one fallen on the floor. One wall bears a large corkboard with green and purple strings connecting annotated pictures of the Batfamily, including a screenshot of Oracle's digital logo. Edward himself has not reacted whatsoever to Duke's entrance. He's hunched over at his desk, typing away at an expensive computer setup. On one side of him sit many energy drinks, on the other is a massive pile of empty cans. All this detail requires Duke's night vision to see, because the lights are off and the curtains are closed, the only light the computer's cold glow.]
Edward: (only briefly looking up to give him a haughty stare) Yes, yes, the Signal, I've heard. Rest assured, it will be my utmost pleasure to obliterate you in a battle of wits. I just need to finish a couple of things.
Duke: When was the last time you slept?
Edward: (slightly hysterical chuckle) Please. I have transcended my mortal weaknesses thanks to intense focus, indomitable drive and the miracle of stimulants, much as I presume you Bats do. You're in no position to lecture me on getting enough sleep. I mean, you're late, so you're clearly not on top of things.
Duke: What?
Edward: You're meant to be a daytime hero. It's a little late for that, isn't it?
Duke: (concerned) It's 8:00 AM.
[Edward blinks and looks at the clock on his screen. He frowns. He stands up, strides over to the window and opens the curtains, flinching at the bright morning light. Duke notices that he has deep bags under his eyes and looks even more tired than Jon did, but his movements are as energetic as ever. He stretches and winces from back ache.]
Edward: Ah. So it is. ...What day is it?
Duke: (more concerned) Monday?
Edward: Monday?!
Duke: Okay, you've clearly been in the zone for a while. And I know being autistic can make it hard to recognize and interpret your body's messages. When was the last time you ate?
Edward: None of your business. I'm perfect condition.
[He picks up another can. Duke punctures it with a batarang. Edward scoffs and throws it down in indignation.]
Duke: I don't think you should have any more of those. (scans the rooms with X-ray vision) Oh my God, there's no food in here. Did you forget to buy it? Listen, if you come quietly, I'll get you a full breakfast on the way to Arkham.
[Edward is distracted, rummaging through his rooms in search of food.]
Edward: Of course I have food, Duke. It's right... it's somewhere around... (finds the fallen model) oh, I was looking for this!
Duke: No, with my powers I - you know my identity?
Edward: (still distracted, talking increasingly fast) What, like it's hard? I know everyone's except Oracle and the Red Hood. If Jason had survived, he'd be a perfect fit, but he's dead. Now, true, Stephanie is still alive when I distinctly remember visiting her grave, but those are completely different situations. There was a motive to fake her death, to escape the criminal overlords she'd angered with that gang war; I cannot find any such benefit from Jason's faked death and relocation. Stephanie was gone for, like, a year. Jason has yet to return after most of a decade. Even -
Duke: You visited Steph's grave?
Edward: She was a brilliant adversary, I had to pay my respects. Anyway, even if Jason's death was somehow inexplicably faked, he wouldn't have chosen to live only as the Red Hood. Especially who the Red Hood was at first. That would mean sacrificing his close familial relationships and becoming his beloved father and brother's enemy. And why would he ever be a crime lord? It's a radical betrayal of all his values, and based on his backstory, he should resent organized crime. And Batman would never fight his own child. None of it makes any sense! But I can't figure out what else could work. Is he really just a random person the Bats took in in adulthood? So that's been weighing on me. And also -
[He trips over a folder and, weak and lightheaded, crashes to the floor. He's so exhausted that merely lying on a flat surface has him sleeping soundly in an instant, resting his head on a stack of paper. Duke stares at him incredulously.]
Duke: I'm buying you breakfast.

Have you thiught about what kind of CT reader from Typical Family has? do you think you’ll ever expand on it?
i have thought about it. fair warning to literally everyone—gege is much much smarter than me (seriously i understand maybe three cursed techniques maybe) so it’s nonsensical and ridiculous.
nonetheless, in my mind her cursed technique compliments satoru. so we’ve got creation (reader) and destruction (satoru, naturally).
following what’s been said about readers family, and her general attitude towards jujutsu, my automatic assumption was that her ct needed to affect the way she interacts with her parents and the way she grew up. it’s been mentioned that her family basically thought she was insane for seeing the curses when she was little
but
let’s take that a bit further, shall we? so readers nine or ten and she sees a fly head for the first time, somewhere in her room or out on the street whatever. and she’s scared, obviously (she’s a child) and like any good parent would (no comment) her mom or dad tries to console her, they try to soothe her with words, and then with hands.
but because reader is the only sorcerer in her family, they don’t realize that when they’re hugging her—rocking back and forth and trying to get her to stop crying—that she can’t feel any of it.
her ct essentially allows her to create—a lot like mai’s with her bullet (but better, naturally)—so when she was a child, she was the physically putting a wall between herself and her parents, trying to subconsciously protect herself from the monster in her room.
haha, get it? unlike satoru’s infinity, her ‘wall’ is a literal stop between her and the rest of the world, and is easily broken (but improves with time and training obviously). so when the two of them meet and satoru sees her training or geto tells him about the first years and what they can do his first reaction is “:( but that’s my technique.”
it’s part of why he’s interested in her—because he wants to prove that infinity is much better than whatever she’s doing. and then he’s like ‘oh we’re the same.’
as reader advances rankings and learns more about cursed energy she develops her ‘creation’ into more than just protection (offense, duh). but it’s very strenuous and she doesn’t have unlimited amounts of cursed energy (unlike some people).
basically my whole thought process about the series revolves around satoru and reader being opposites and needing different things, complimenting each other, and then becoming so similar that it hurts them both.
satoru recognizes that he needs to pull reader out of her head at any given opportunity and reader realizes that satoru doesn’t want to talk about the things that happen to him, so she doesn’t push. they both understand each other in this way. (and eventually, it comes back to bite them in the ass because reader doesn’t want to talk to satoru about how she feels and satoru doesnt want her to worry about it).
as for going forward, i’m not an action writer so to say, but i do have a very interesting request where readers ct might come into play. we shall see. also if i write about reader and satoru going on missions when they were younger it’ll be necessary.
and, just another cool thing about them. i mentioned that no one can see readers ‘creations’ except for her because while they physically disrupt the space around her, they have no actual appearance. but because of satoru’s six eyes he can see it.
he’s the only person to see her.

How would Nebul react if he ever went too far with punishments? Like to the point where his human becomes distant. They are still there, but not mentally. Barely even acknowledging Nebul.
Only to Nebul, mostly because now the genuenly fear and distrust him, blocking out the world and him the moment Nebul is close. Not something you want in a pet.
How would he go on about fixing that?
He usually doesn't go too far. You're not the first human he's trained, Nebul knows how far he can go before he breaks a mind, he knows how to read people and understand what type of punishment will unravel them faster. That being said, he also knows when to stop.
I can only see Nebul going to far if you managed to do something that upset him beyond measure. Because even when he's mad, this monster has superb self-control. You would need to make the wraith truly livid. And that's not something you want to deal with by any means.
Your disassociaton is met with vast disappointment. Even if he realizes he went further than he should have, the wraith believed you would be mentally stronger than this. He botched it, he botched the training process because you got under his skin, you successfully managed to irritate him and he got sloppy. This is a lesson for both himself and you. While there is a very present sadness in his tone, Nebul knows there's no point in crying over spilled milk.
There are only two outcomes to this. Either you're forcibly nudged into acknowledging him via mood alterations induced by his hypnotic qualities, or you're broken entirely so he can shape you into a proper pet, someone else.
Which route he takes depends vastly on how you acted during captivity. Were you someone who mostly cooperated and listened to him? Someone he could get along with in choice moments? Congrats, you get a second chance and Nebul will make the strenuous effort to rip that trauma-induced disposition right out of you, maybe eat the memories that caused it for a faster recovery process- Even if erasing punishments is bad in his eyes, since it also removes the lesson.
Did you make everything difficult? Were you always determined to disobey and disrespect? Then your identity will be swiftly remodeled according to his personal tastes. All memories are wiped from your mind, you're given a carefully crafted fake identity that reinforces and encourages your role as his pretty submissive pet, and all is well in the world for you because you don't know anything else except Nebul and The Clergy.

Why and How to Track Recruitment Metrics
Recruiting the right talent has always been a strenuous task for companies irrespective of their size, brand, global presence, emoluments offered, etc. Most companies are adopting creative and value-driven recruitment strategies which are quite visible in most social media platforms. But are they really gauging the effectiveness of these efforts? This is something that we need to delve into further. Measuring recruitment effectiveness adds to the hassle since most companies are unsure on why and how to do the same.
If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it
Create candidate experience:
This is a widely discussed topic nowadays since companies started realising the importance of the same. As per PWC reports, 49% of candidates turned down offers due to bad recruiting experience. Some of the reasons can be unclear communication, lack of timely response, etc. By understanding how to professionalize the recruitment process, companies can deliver an exceptional and ,engaging candidate experience.
Organizational reputation:
Most organizations use their brand name to attract top talent since there is an existing perception about assured job security, exceptional employee benefits, etc. A very few candidates would be willing to apply in companies they have never heard of. But the changing times have proved that even companies with a strong reputation of what they stand for, have started attracting the best talent. Tracking candidate perception about most notable factors like training opportunities, work life balance, culture, diversity and inclusion, etc. helps companies to develop strategies to reinforce the strengths and restore the weaknesses.
Optimize recruitment process:
Most candidates complain about the time taken for progressing into each recruitment step and the lack of an effective feedback mechanism. While analysing the timeline for recruitment of each role, we will be able to find out the exact reason for the same and bring in proper mechanisms to address the issue.
Channel recruitment efforts:
Companies come up with a variety of recruitment efforts which at times involve huge cost. But most of them are unsure on the impact it has created since the effort outcome is not tracked. Analysing the same can give a better idea on creating engaging ads, sources/top channels to attract quality candidates, target audience, candidate application pattern, etc.
Impact of changing times:
We are all going through a different phase of time since the outbreak of Covid, where complete virtual recruitment has become a new normal. How prepared companies were to tackle the situation in terms of technology, is still a question. This new normal is creating new trends across every function which is still an ongoing process. Companies need to foresee these trends and evolve to match the new expectations.
Diversity & Inclusion (D&I):
According to PWC reports, 62% of job seekers are more likely to apply for a job where a company is openly committed to improving diversity and inclusion in their workforce. D&I efforts need to be formulated and implemented based on the business goals which again needs to be tracked for better results.
Understanding the reasons for which we need to track the recruitment metrics is a stepping stone towards success in talent recruitment. There are a bountiful number of metrics which we can track to measure recruitment success. Let’s discuss a few of them which attributes directly to the cause we are working towards.
Recruitment metrics are of two types: Qualitative and Quantitative in nature. While qualitative metrics speak about tracking subjective information, quantitative metrics are more about representation using numbers.
Qualitative Metrics:
Source of hire: Companies need to track the source of each resume like whether the candidate applied through any job boards, referrals, social media platforms, etc. This data helps companies to identify where to focus their recruiting efforts like posting job ads, publishing engaging content, etc., to control recruiting costs and to implement the system effectively. Tips: Tracking each candidate source and analyzing the data is a strenuous task when done manually. So companies need to invest in a good recruitment automation platform which would automate the whole process, thereby delivering meaningful insights to the recruitment team.
Candidate Experience: Creating an exceptional candidate experience is one of the main focus areas for most companies in this present scenario. READ MORE........

NINE PSYCHOLOGICAL WAYS TO BE HAPPIER
Happiness can seem like an elusive concept, something that’s always just out of reach.
According to psychology, however, the road to happiness can be simpler than we often make it.
The trick is to understand that happiness is a choice, and there are certain habits and routines you can establish to make that choice easier.
In this article, I share with you 9 simple ways to be happier in life, as backed by psychology.
These aren’t just empty platitudes or vague ideas, but concrete steps you can start taking right now. So, let’s dive in and find out how to make your life a little bit happier!
1) Practice gratitude
Attitude shifts can make a world of difference, and one of the simplest ways to improve your happiness is to practice gratitude.
According to Harvard Health:
“In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”
Gratitude helps us focus on what we have rather than what we lack. Instead of dwelling on the negatives, we start seeing our lives through a lens of positivity and abundance.
Start by keeping a gratitude journal where you write down three things you are grateful for each day. This helps train your brain to look for the good in every situation.
It’s not about denying life’s challenges but about acknowledging the good that exists alongside them.
Practising gratitude is a small change that can lead to big improvements in your overall happiness.
So why not give it a shot? After all, what do you have to lose except maybe a bit of unhappiness?
2) Incorporate exercise into your daily routine
Believe it or not, the link between physical activity and happiness is quite strong.
Multiple studies have shown that regular exercise can increase your mood and decrease feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress.
In fact, I can personally attest to this. A few years ago, I was feeling particularly low. My mood was often gloomy, and I was constantly feeling stressed. It was then that I decided to incorporate exercise into my daily routine.
I started off small, with just a 10-minute walk around every morning. Slowly but surely, I began to notice a change. My mood started lifting, and I felt less stressed. Over time, I increased my exercise time and introduced more activities.
Today, I can’t imagine my life without daily exercise. Not only am I physically healthier, but my mental health has significantly improved as well.
So, if you’re looking for a simple way to boost your happiness, try moving your body more. It doesn’t have to be anything strenuous – even a quick walk can make a difference!
3) Get enough sleep
Sleep is often overlooked when we think about happiness. But getting a good night’s rest can significantly impact your mood and overall well-being.
When we sleep, our bodies undergo various processes that promote physical health, including tissue repair, hormone regulation, and brain function.
But it’s not just about physical health.
A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that people who were limited to only 4.5 hours of sleep a night for one week reported feeling more stressed, angry, and mentally exhausted.
When they returned to a normal sleep schedule, their mood significantly improved.
The researchers concluded that adequate sleep is crucial for maintaining a positive mood and overall emotional health.
Ensure you’re getting enough ZZZs each night. It’s not just good for your health – it’s fundamental for your happiness too!
4) Connect with others
We humans are social creatures. We crave connections and thrive on healthy relationships. In fact, connecting with others is one of the most effective ways to boost our happiness levels.
Building strong bonds and maintaining social ties can enrich our lives in many ways. It can provide emotional support in tough times, offer joy and companionship, and even improve our sense of self-worth.
An 80-year Harvard study found that the quality of our closest relationships is the biggest predictor of happiness.
These relationships do not need to be many or complicated. A simple conversation with a friend, a warm hug from a family member, or even a friendly exchange with a stranger can greatly enhance our mood.
Therefore, take the time to nurture your relationships. Call an old friend, spend quality time with your family, or make an effort to meet new people. You’ll be surprised how these connections can light up your life.
5) Find purpose and meaning
Happiness isn’t just about feeling good all the time. It’s also about feeling that life is good, worthwhile, and meaningful.
A study found that when people feel like they have a purpose, they’re more likely to feel happy feelings like being content, relaxed, excited, and joyful.
They’re also less likely to feel bad stuff like anger, worry, tiredness, or sadness.
Plus, they generally feel more satisfied with their life and just feel better overall.
Purpose gives us a reason to get up in the morning, fuels our motivation, and helps us overcome challenges.
This could be anything – from your profession to a hobby you’re passionate about to volunteering for a cause you believe in. The key is to find something that resonates with you and aligns with your values and passions.
Take some time to introspect. What drives you? What makes you feel fulfilled? Once you find it, pursue it wholeheartedly. Not only will it bring you satisfaction, but it will also guide you on the path to genuine happiness.
6) Practice kindness
In a world where you can be anything, be kind. It’s a simple phrase, but it holds a profound truth. Kindness is a universal language that transcends borders, cultures, and languages.
A published review of decades of kindness research found that people who were kind tended to have higher well-being.
When we perform acts of kindness – whether large or small – we’re not just helping others, we’re also helping ourselves.
Helping others triggers the release of serotonin in our brains, a hormone that gives us feelings of satisfaction and happiness.
But the beauty of kindness is that it doesn’t have to be grand gestures. It could be as simple as complimenting someone, lending a helping hand to a neighbour in need, or just sharing a smile with a stranger on the street.
These actions might seem small, but their impact can be enormous. They create positive ripples that spread outwards, touching lives in ways we might never fully comprehend.
So go out there and scatter kindness around like confetti. Because in the end, it’s not just about making others happy – it’s about creating a happier world for all of us to live in.
7) Learn to let go
Holding onto negative feelings like resentment, anger, or disappointment can be like carrying around a heavy backpack. It weighs you down and prevents you from moving forward.
I learned this the hard way. I used to hold onto grudges and dwell on past mistakes, constantly replaying them in my mind. This didn’t just rob me of my present happiness, but also affected my future.
It was only when I made a conscious decision to let go and forgive – forgive others and more importantly, forgive myself – that I truly began to feel happier.
The process wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. By letting go of the past, I freed myself from its chains and opened up space for positivity and peace.
Susanna Newsonen MAPP explains why in Psychology Today that happiness is not about being happy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s about having the full human experience, including positive and negative emotions.
We all have the power to release these negative emotions. It might not happen overnight, but with patience and perseverance, it is possible.
And trust me, the feeling of freedom that comes with letting go is incomparable.
8) Spend more time in nature
There’s something incredibly calming and rejuvenating about being in nature. The fresh air, the greenery, the peace and quiet – they all contribute to a sense of serenity and happiness.
Psychology research supports this, too. Studies have found that spending time outdoors can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety, and enhance mood.
Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or just sitting in your backyard, spending time in nature can do wonders for your mental well-being.
So make it a point to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. You will not only feel more relaxed but also more attuned to yourself and the world around you.
9) Embrace self-compassion
At the end of the day, the most important relationship you have is with yourself. Therefore, it’s crucial to treat yourself with kindness and compassion.
Higher levels of self-compassion are linked to increased feelings of happiness, optimism, curiosity and connectedness, as well as decreased anxiety, depression, rumination, and fear of failure.
Self-compassion involves acknowledging your own suffering, failures, and inadequacies, and responding to them with kindness and understanding instead of harsh self-judgment.
It’s about accepting that you’re human and it’s okay to make mistakes. It’s about being patient with yourself, especially during tough times.
When you learn to treat yourself with the same kindness you would treat a dear friend, you create a nurturing space for growth and happiness.
So remember to be kind to yourself. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s more than enough.
Final thoughts: Happiness is a journey
The quest for happiness is as old as humanity itself. It’s a complex, multi-faceted journey that can often feel elusive and out of reach. But psychology has provided us with valuable insights into how we can navigate this journey more effectively.
Each of the strategies I have explored – from practising gratitude and kindness, to connecting with others and finding purpose – are stepping stones on the path to happiness. They are not quick fixes or magic solutions, but rather habits and mindsets to cultivate over time.
It’s important to remember that happiness is not a destination but a journey. It’s about embracing the highs and lows, learning from our experiences, and striving to create a life filled with joy, fulfilment, and well-being.
As renowned psychologist Carl Rogers once said, “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” This holds true for happiness as well.
So take these strategies, apply them in your own life, and embark on your unique journey towards happiness. Remember, it’s your journey, and every step you take brings you closer to creating the happy life you desire and deserve.

Renovation of the Heart | Dallas Willard [John 4:14]
Tumblr media
Prelude: JESUS of Nazareth
Tumblr media
John 4:14 | ¹⁴ But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
When we open ourselves to the writings of the NT, when we absorb our minds & hearts in one of the Gospels, for example, or letters such as Ephesians or 1 Peter,
the overwhelming impression that comes      upon us is that we are looking into another      world and another life.
It is a divine world & a divine life.
Yet it is a world and life that ordinary people have entered, and are entering even now. It is a world that seems open to us—and beckons us to enter.
We feel its call.
The amazing promises to those who give their life to this new world, thru their confidence in JESUS leap out at us from the page.
For example, we read JESUS' OWN words, that those who give themselves to HIM will receive a “living water,” the SPIRIT of GOD HIMSELF — that'll keep them from ever again being thirsty —being driven & ruled by unsatisfied desires, & that this “water” will become a well or spring of such water “gushing up to eternal life.”
[John 4:14, PAR]
Indeed it will even become “rivers of living water,” flowing from the center of the believer's life to a thirsty world. [John 7:38]
Or Peter's words about how those who love & trust JESUS “rejoice with an indescribable & glorious joy” [1 Peter 1:8, NRSV]
with “genuine mutual love,” pouring from their heart [1 Peter 1:22, NRSV] ridding themselves of “all malice & all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander.” [1 Peter 2:1, NRSV]
— silencing scoffers at the Way of CHRIST by simply doing what is right [2:15] and casting all our anxieties upon GOD because HE cares for us.
[1 Peter 5:7, NRSV]
………………………………………………………………… The vision is clear, and no one open to it can mistake what it means. But while all is clear & desirable—we must admit that, in many historical periods as well as today — Christians generally only find their way into this divine life slowly & with great difficulty, if at all. …………………………………………………………………
I believe one reason why so many people do in fact fail to immerse themselves in the words of the NT, and neglect or even avoid them, is
that the life they see there is so unlike      what they know from their experience.
This is true even though they may be quite faithful to their Church in the ways prescribed, & really do have JESUS CHRIST as their only hope.
Therefore, the clear NT presentation of the life we are unmistakably offered in CHRIST only discourage them or makes them hopeless.
Why should this be so?
Surely the life GOD holds out to us in JESUS was not meant to be an unsolvable puzzle!!!  And that only leaves us with the explanation that,
for all our good intentions & strenuous      methods, “we do approach & receive      that life in the right way.”
We do not comprehend & convey the wisdom of JESUS and the Bible about the human being, and about its redemption by grace from destructive powers—that have come to occupy it in all of its primary dimensions.
*         *          *          *          *          *          *          *
It really isn't true that where there is a will, there is automatically a way — though of course will is crucial.  There is also needed an understanding of exactly what needs to be done, & how it can be accomplished:
Of the instruments for the realization      of that life, and the order of their use.
Spiritual formation in CHRIST is an orderly process.
Altough GOD can triumph in disorder, that is not HIS choice.  And instead of focusing upon what GOD can do,
…………………………………………………………………      we must humble ourselves to accept      the ways HE's chosen to work with us. …………………………………………………………………
These are clearly laid out in the Bible, & especially in the words & PERSON of JESUS CHRIST. HE invites us to leave our burdensome ways of heavy labour, especially the “religious” ones, step into the yoke of training with HIM.
This is a way of gentleness & lowliness, a way of soul rest. It is a way of inner transformation that proves pulling HIS load, and carrying HIS burden with HIM to be a life that is eay & light.
[Matthew 11:28-30]
The perceived distance & difficulty of      entering fully into the divine world &      its life is due entirely to our failure to      understand “the way in” is the way of …………………………………………………………………      pervasive inner transformation—and      our failure to take the small steps that      quietly and certainly lead to it. …………………………………………………………………
This is a hopeful, life-saving insight.
For the individual
it means that all of the hinderances of      our putting off the old person & putting      on the new one — can be removed or      mastered.
And that will enable us to walk increasingly in the wholeness, holiness, & power of the Kingdom of the Heavens.
No one need live in spiritual & personal defeat.
A life of victory over sin & circumstance is accessible to all.

Summary: Dallas Willard's Renovation of the Heart
Tumblr media
Lesson #1: Feed Your Spirit Man
The human spirit is an inescapable, fundamental aspect of every human being. It takes on which- ever character it has from the experiences and choices we've lived through or made in our past.
Our life & how we find the world now & in the future is largely a result of what we've become in the depths of our being.
Lesson #2:
The Way of JESUS is a revolution of the human heart, not the formation of social institutions & laws. It is a revolution of character that changes people’s ideas, beliefs, feelings, and habits of choice.
It proceeds by changing people from the inside out—rather than threats of punishment. HE is in process of creating new attachments & desires.

Energy is the fuel that propels us forward, enabling us to tackle our daily tasks with enthusiasm and vigor. However, in the relentless pursuit of our goals, we often neglect our wellbeing, leading to depleted energy reserves. But fear not, for in this comprehensive guide, we will explore essential wellness tips to supercharge your energy levels and reclaim vitality like never before. I. Understanding Perplexity and Burstiness Before we delve into the actionable tips, let us first unravel the concepts of perplexity and burstiness. Perplexity measures the complexity of text by assessing how difficult it is for readers to understand. Burstiness, on the other hand, scrutinizes the variations in sentence length to add dynamism to the writing. Human writing exhibits burstiness, as authors often combine longer, more intricate sentences with shorter ones to create a captivating flow. Conversely, AI-generated content tends to lack this natural burstiness, resulting in a uniform tone. To ensure an engaging article, we aim to strike a balance between perplexity and burstiness, captivating readers with a diverse range of sentence structures and complexity. II. Unleashing Your Energy Reserves 1. Prioritize Quality Sleep One cannot stress enough the importance of quality sleep in maintaining high energy levels. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Create a peaceful sleep environment, practice a relaxing bedtime routine, and avoid the disruptive glow of electronic devices before turning in. 2. Nourish with a Balanced Diet Fuel your body with a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients. Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats into your meals. Avoid processed foods, excessive sugar, and refined carbohydrates that can leave you feeling sluggish. 3. Stay Hydrated Never underestimate the power of water in boosting energy levels. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and mental fogginess. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day and increase your intake during strenuous activities. 4. Exercise Regularly Engaging in regular physical activity not only improves cardiovascular health but also enhances energy levels. Incorporate a mix of aerobic exercises, strength training, and flexibility workouts into your routine. Even a brisk walk during breaks can invigorate your mind and body. 5. Prioritize self-care and seek support from loved ones or professionals when necessary. 6. Optimize Your Environment Declutter your physical and digital environment to reduce distractions and improve focus. Ensure proper lighting, comfortable seating, and an organized workspace to promote productivity and prevent fatigue. 7. Stimulate Your Mind Challenge your brain regularly by engaging in intellectually stimulating activities. Read books, solve puzzles, learn a new language, or take up a musical instrument. Mental stimulation keeps your mind sharp and wards off boredom-induced fatigue. FAQs About Supercharging Your Energy Levels Q1. Can caffeine boost energy levels? A1. While caffeine can provide a temporary energy boost, excessive consumption can lead to dependency and disrupt sleep patterns. It is best to consume caffeine in moderation and seek natural energy sources for long-term vitality. Q2. How does regular exercise enhance energy levels? A2. Regular exercise increases blood flow, improves sleep quality, and boosts endorphin production, all of which contribute to sustained energy levels. The best exercises for building muscle
Tumblr media
In the introduction section of this article, I will highlight the significance of muscle gain and the purpose of the article, which is to give information on the most effective ways of increasing muscle. Muscle growth has several favorable effects, including higher physical appeal, increased strength and power, and enhanced sports performance. Understanding which workouts are ideal for gaining muscle is essential for optimizing one’s training regimen and achieving the desired outcomes. It has been argued that adding muscle might improve an individual’s overall health and well-being. This can be accomplished by decreasing the probability of developing chronic illnesses and injuries, maintaining good weight control, and boosting bone density.
The studies supporting the idea of muscle growth will be the subject of the next section. This article will discuss muscular hypertrophy, or the process of growing muscle mass through resistance exercise. Different forms of muscle hypertrophy, including sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar, as well as the body’s stress reactions, will be explored. In addition, we will discuss the importance of proper nutrition and progressive overload in the process of muscle development. Progressive overload is the process of gradually increasing the amount of tension placed on the muscles. Nutrition is essential for muscle growth because it offers the building blocks required for muscle repair and recovery. Muscle growth and repair are dependent on consuming sufficient calories, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, l discuss muscular hypertrophy, or the process of growing muscle mass through resistance exercise. Muscle growth and repair are dependent on consuming sufficient calories, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, and minerals. Pay particular attention to the quantities of protein, carbs, and fats as well as vitamins and minerals consumed.
Among the most effective workouts for muscle building are the squat, the deadlift, the bench press, the pull-ups and chin-ups, the standing military press, the barbell rows, the dumbbell curls, and the tricep dips. In each of these exercises, a barbell is employed. Each of these operations is a strenuous workout since it involves several muscle groups and joints. Therefore, while attempting to increase muscular mass, compound workouts are superior to isolated sessions. Each exercise will be described in depth, including its advantages for muscle building and how to execute it correctly. Various exercises, including squats, deadlifts, and bench presses, target the primary muscular groups in the legs, back, and chest.
separately for the breasts and chest You may increase your overall strength, power, and muscle mass by following the offered workout regimens. By performing pull-ups and chin-ups, back and arm strength may be considerably enhanced. By completing the standing military press and the barbell row, shoulder and back strength may be significantly increased. The biceps and triceps can also be targeted with dumbbell curls and tricep dips, respectively. These muscle groups can be strengthened and sculpted by isolating them. The importance of doing these exercises with perfect form and technique cannot be overemphasized in order to maximize muscle activation and minimize the danger of injury.
In the next paragraph, we will provide some suggestions for combining these activities into your current training routine. We will discuss appropriate form and technique for your safety and to maximize your workout outcomes. It is crucial to practice the exercises under the supervision of a trainer or an experienced workout partner in order to verify that you are completing them correctly and safely. Combining progressive resistance with progressive loading is also essential for sustaining muscular growth over time. As you train and your muscles adapt and become stronger, you should progressively increase the amount of weight you lift or the number of repetitions you perform for each exercise. Rest and recuperation time between workouts is vital for muscular growth. Rest and restoration are also advantageous to muscle growth. In addition, it is vital to select workouts from a range of categories in order to avoid plateaus and promote overall muscular growth. You may minimize training boredom and plateaus by varying your program so that different muscle groups are worked at different times.
Finally, we will address the significance of muscle growth and the efficacy of the exercises covered in this article. If our readers aspire to achieve their goals of developing muscle mass, we propose that they include the aforementioned workouts into a continuous and thorough training regimen. You will be given additional training programs, videos, and articles in order to understand as much as possible about the muscle-building and exercise processes. Gaining muscle is a long process that involves commitment, effort, and perseverance. Remember this, since building muscle takes time. Before beginning a new workout regimen, you should always pay attention to your body and see a doctor. If you are in pain, it is recommended that you take a break and relax.

How the Germans Defined Auftragstaktik: What Mission Command is - AND - is Not

How the Germans Defined Auftragstaktik[i]: What Mission Command is - AND - is Not
Donald E. Vandergriff
In general, one does well to order no more than is absolutely necessary and to avoid planning beyond the situation one can foresee. These change very rapidly in war. Seldom will orders that anticipate far in advance and in detail succeed completely to execution.
The higher the authority, the shorter and more general will the orders be. The next lower command adds what further precision appears necessary. The detail of execution is left to the verbal order, to the command. Each thereby retains freedom of action and decision within his authority.
-- Helmut Karl Bernhard von Moltke, Instructions for Large Unit Commanders (1869)[ii]
Auftragstaktik or Mission Command,
Is not a Command and Control doctrine.
It is not a Command and Control system.
It is not a technology.
It is not a ticket to a “free for all.”
It is not a way to write short or no orders or to rely on verbal orders.
Auftragstaktik is a cultural philosophy. It is the highest form of military professionalism. The overall commander’s intent is for the member to strive for professionalism, in return, the individual will be given latitude in the accomplishment of their given missions.  Strenuous, but proven and defensible standards will be used to identify those few capable of serving in the profession of arms.  Once an individual has been accepted into the profession, a special bond forms with their comrades, which enables team work and the solving of complex tasks. This kind of command culture cannot be comprehensively conveyed in a sole block of official instruction. Instead, Mission Command must be integrated into all education and training from the very beginning of basic training. Even more importantly, it must be integrated into all aspects of so-called “garrison” life, in everything the military does.
Yet the ultimate command culture—because it empowers by trust the individual to best solve problems after extensive professional development—did not come into official being until the publication of the German 1888 Drill Regulations.[iii] The reform process that led to the first formal adoption of Mission Command by an armed force began with Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst, (1755—1813) in the early 1800s and was taken up by August von Gneisenau (1760–1831) after his mentor’s untimely death in 1813, and later Leopold Hermann Ludwig von Boyen (1771–1848).[iv] This continued after decades of professional debate, implementation in officer development, and real-world application in three wars: the Danish-Prussian War of 1864, the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.[v]
In parallel, the U.S. Army has some great examples of similar command climates and approaches. As an institution, the U.S. Army has yet to see Mission Command as what it really is - a culture of professionalism.  All too often, we have sought tangible metrics at the expense of holistic understanding. As a great practitioner, LTC Chad R. Foster says,
The intent behind changing the terminology was to get away from viewing the application of command merely in terms of technical systems and tasks. As usual, we seem to be missing the mark—Mission Command as we SAY we want it to be is a cultural concept, and one that can't be quantified in an easy metric. It also can't be standardized, at least not in the sense of specific step-by-step processes (our institutional favorite, of course).[vi]
Since the 1870s, when General Philip Sheridan and Lieutenant Colonel Emory Upton were sent by the U.S. Army to study the Prussian military system and other international militaries, we have failed to understand and apply the meaning of Auftragstaktik to our own organizational cultures.  The U.S. Army like many other nations, copied the verbiage of Auftragstaktik verbatim, but failed to operationalize the concept. The same holds true today. The U.S. Army has always conflated Mission Command with bureaucratic efficiency, stemming from a time when the theories of Max Weber were emerging in Europe and the United States. As Muth writes,
Auftragstaktik. The word sounds cool even when mangled by an American tongue. What it means, however, has always been elusive to Americans. The problematic translation of that core German military word into 'mission type orders' completely distorts its meaning. Auftragstaktik does not denote a certain style of giving orders or a certain way of phrasing them; it is a whole command philosophy.[vii]
German officers who served in U.S. Army schools and observed the U.S. at war, sometimes tried to explain their command culture to their American counterparts. Captain Adolf von Schell, an exchange officer to the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia in the 1930s, translated Auftragstaktik into mission tactics:
In the German Army we use what we term “mission tactics”; orders are not written out in the minutest detail, a mission is merely given to a commander. How it shall be carried out is his problem. This is done because the commander on the ground is the only one who can correctly judge existing conditions and take proper action if a change occurs in the situation.[viii]
Although it has been translated into English in several different ways, it is difficult to understand unless one strenuously researches the origins of the concept. That research shows that the Prussian/German concept is interesting for two reasons.
First, it explains how the Germans believed they could operate mentally faster than their enemies. The Germans mean “faster” not just in terms of raw, physical speed, but “faster” in terms of making better decisions. Timely and better decisions results in better physical speed relative to the enemy. The German armed forces accomplished this with a progressive and innovative approach to leader development. Technology was only viewed in terms of enhancing their leader’s abilities make more effective decisions.[ix]
Secondly and more importantly, it defines what kind of officers and soldiers a military needs in order to operate successfully under this concept. This is key to understanding what kind of culture a military force must cultivate in order to be successful.
U.S. historians have long explained away German victories in the early years of World War II with tales of superior German equipment and numbers. Nothing could be further from the truth. As prominent historian Dr. James Corum explains in the introduction of Condell and Zabecki’s book On the German Art of War: Truppenführung:
For years after the 1940 campaign the German victory was explained by Germany’s employment of masses of tanks, motorized forces and aircraft against an enemy bound to the Maginot Line and a defensive strategy. However, we know now that in terms of numbers of troops and weapons, the Wehrmacht in 1940 held few advantages. Indeed, it was often at a disadvantage against the Allied forces.[x]
Dr. James Corum dismissed the Western or Industrial-age tactical principle that an attacking force must have a force ratio advantage of 3:1 to defeat an enemy in a prepared defensive position. He explains the German success in terms of the intangibles of leadership and good ideas, rather than raw numbers of men and material. What counted more was how the Germans developed and nurtured leadership. It was not the content of their training courses, but the environment in which leadership was taught and developed. This is a foreign concept to the U.S. Military, which prefers to focus on content, time, and inputs, rather than outcomes or results. To effectively practice Auftragstaktik a military force must incorporate these ideas every day in everything they do, in war and in peace.[xi]
Auftragstaktik is a, broad concept...embracing aspects of...a theory of the nature of war, character and leadership traits, tactics, command and control, senior subordinate relationships, and training and education. It...[is] a comprehensive approach to warfighting.
The common translation of Auftragstaktik as “mission-type orders” or as “mission command” can be misleading. This focuses attention on the mission statement of the U.S. Operations Order. A true understanding of Auftragstaktik would focus attention on Paragraphs 3a (Concept of the Operation) and 3b (Coordinating Instructions).[xii]
Auftragstaktik emphasizes commander’s intent, which provides subordinates a framework for making their own decisions in harmony with the overall plan: “The German Army used mission statements...in the form of the commander’s intent...The commander then assigned tasks (Aufträge) to subordinate units to carry out his superior’s intent. The subordinate commander decided upon a specific course of action which became his resolution (Entschluss).”[xiii]
Auftragstaktik “explains basic principles of giving orders for operations.”
Fostering this kind of individual initiative was the guiding principle of German military education. In short, officers were taught how to think, not what to think. Generals Hermann Balck, and von Mellenthin, during discussions with Col. John Boyd and Pierre Sprey in 1979, said they “considered the individuality of the German fighting man—his freedom to take initiative and the system which engendered these policies and attributes—to be the key to superlative German performance.”[xiv]
In the German Army culture, a commander rarely, if ever, reproached a subordinate for showing initiative. This is where the term Selbständichkeit (to change an order) is important. According to military historian and author Dr. Rob Citino, this was the term that the Germans used, while Auftragstaktik was hardly discussed, if at all. The culture of Auftragstaktik created the conditions for adaptability, while with Selbständichkeit a leader could change their order based on the circumstances of the moment guided by the higher commander’s intent. They believed it was better to make a good decision immediately than to wait and make a better decision later, possibly missing a fleeting battlefield opportunity.[xv] An unforgivable mistake in such a culture is one of inaction. Waiting for perfect information before making any decision was not tolerated. This attitude extended down through the ranks, to the individual soldier. As Dr. Bruce I. Gudmundsson has written, the German Army was, since the days of Frederick the Great, one of “the most decentralized ones in Europe.”[xvi]
In situations where contact with the higher commander was lost, subordinates could be trusted to take the action he thought appropriate, rather than stopping and waiting until contact could be re-established. This aggressive attitude allowed units to take advantage of fleeting opportunities and local successes. In short, “... nothing laid down from above in advance is sacrosanct. A subordinate commander ... is justified ... in modifying or even changing the task assigned him” as long as his action supports the higher commander’s intent.[xvii]
The core of the success of Auftragstaktik was the strenuous selection and development of German leaders. There were three personal qualities the Germans clearly valued in their officers: knowledge, independence, and the joy of taking responsibility. Knowledge served at least two purposes. First of all, knowledge was what made the officer know what to do, a foundation for making a decision.  At the same time, it generated trust among your subordinates. Independence was related to decision making. Independence matters as an officer may be the only one present with the authority to make a decision at a given time. One cannot always wait for others to tell you what to do and when to do it. The last and the most important personal quality was the joy of taking responsibility. The joy of taking responsibility was what kept you on the battlefield. “It was what forced you to stay despite the horrors you were experiencing. It was what made you endure.”[xviii]
The best way to separate the great from the average is to hold everyone—from the top commander down to each individual soldier—responsible for their actions. Not only are you responsible for their own units but for “service to the people.” This leads to the introduction of the term Verantwortungsfreudigkeit.[xix] The 1921 manual of Führung und Gefecht der Verbundenen Waffen in 1921-23, says that “the most distinguished leaders’ quality is the joy of taking responsibility.” German doctrine used this term as early as World War I, but it is emphasized in the 1933 Truppenführung.
Truppenführung delves thoroughly into the concept by stating that “all leaders must in all situations without fearing responsibility exert his whole personality. The joy of taking responsibility is the most distinguished leadership quality.” This clearly states how important the Germans viewed responsibility. They strove to cultivate officers who not only accepted responsibility, but actually thrived and excelled in situations where great responsibility was suddenly thrust upon them.[xx]
Why is it important for an officer to enjoy responsibility? Independence equips an officer to handle uncertainty and make good decisions in the absence of direction. When faced with the horrors of the battlefield, an officer needs more than just independence to reach his or her potential. When everything is difficult and everyone around him seems to have given up, that is when the feeling of responsibility kicks in. It is the feeling that no one else can determine the outcome of the engagement, when one must face the “emptiness of the battlefield.”[xxi] This is why “Verantwortungsfreudigkeit” is what makes the officer “endure the situation” on the battlefield and is the most important quality for a leader.[xxii]
One may note that there is no discussion of a single individual in this examination of Mission Command. I do not write about leadership with discussions of a George Patton or Ulysses Grant. Individual personalities do not play a major role in Auftragstaktik. The Germans were able to teach it to a great many officers and NCOs. They discovered a way to make it stick as their culture. The culture matters more than the individual personalities involved.

Eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon: Book Review [2022]
Weight loss isn’t as simple as most celebrities make it appear. One of the most common methods people use is dieting. People run out of discipline in most cases because dieting is not a natural process. The body reacts to changes in food patterns as a survival mechanism. Sometimes exercising for weight loss will make things worse by increasing your appetite. It’s a huge task to accomplish the required outcomes in a healthy way that doesn’t harm your health and helps you reach your target weight because most of us are prone to misinformation and long-held myths. If you’ve struggled with other diet programs, then Eat Stop Eat could be the right choice for you.
Eat Stop Eat is written by Brad Pilon, who left behind a career in the sports supplement industry so that he could understand the true rules of weight loss and what we should eat. Brad says that he’s found “The Shocking Truth That Makes Weight Loss Simple Again.” Following an ideal fasting method should not be a “daily” uphill struggle. For the first 3 to 7 days, you are wondering if you can do this. Your body isn’t used to going without its immediate energy source (that box of donuts) and it certainly isn’t used to not eating. Sugar addiction is also very real and the withdrawals can be difficult. However, this only lasts about a week. As your body adapts to using fat as storage you can feel pretty terrible. Headaches, lethargy, and a bad mood are all common side effects. After the first week or so, however, your body starts to be more adapted to burning fat for fuel, you start to feel better and once you see the pounds start melting off, you feel positively inspired.
Instead of overwhelming you with complicated weight-loss strategies and complex diet rules, Eat Stop Eat focuses on simple, attainable eating actions you can implement today. By following a basic intermittent fasting program twice a week, you could achieve powerful weight loss effects. This procedure can delay aging through a process known as autophagy, where the body gets rid of old cells and generates new ones. This system explains the wrong strategy of eating for the sake of living and teaches how to cope with the food-eating intervals by indulging in other activities. Individuals can also get rid of their addiction to eating and will also witness an increase in energy levels, stamina, and strength.
By fasting throughout the day, you can lose weight and achieve other health benefits. Fasting is easier than dieting: instead of eating small meals multiple times per day, you simply abstain from eating for a few hours, then eat during certain “feeding windows.” I love that Brad does not provide meal plans, workout plans, or a list of key steps to follow. What he does provide is sound advice, gleaned from years of research and personal practice. You can reduce the fasting window to 20 hours to make this intermittent fasting method work for you. You can also try fasting once a week if you cannot sustain fasting twice a week. However, if you are fasting for two days a week, make sure not to fast on two consecutive days.
There are no set workouts to follow although you are encouraged to do some type of resistance training. Pilon argues that this is a positive and not a negative. The truth is that you can follow your workout plan and get great results. You are encouraged to work out 3 times a week while following this diet. That does not mean that you need a gym membership or expensive equipment though. High-intensity workouts should be avoided until the body settles to eat stop eat way of eating. However, moderate walking, weight-training, and resistance exercises can be taken up as usual to build muscle. It is better to avoid strenuous exercise on fasting days.
In my opinion, Eat Stop Eat is not a scam. It is a legitimate weight loss program that has been created by a nutrition and fitness expert. The program comes with a money-back guarantee, which shows that the creator is confident in the results it can deliver. I have been following the Eat Stop Eat program for over two months now and I have seen amazing results. When I started using the intermittent fasting plan, I was amazed by how well it worked. Even though I’m overweight, I can still lose weight and keep fit. I have lost weight, inches off my waistline, and my energy levels have increased. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is looking for a way to lose weight and improve their health.

Archery Practice ... Yandere Childe x Harbinger!Reader
warnings for genre typical portrayals of unhealthy relationships... ngl childe is kinda tame in this one tho
Word Count: 2k
Mid-evening tended to be an unpopular time to train. Most were having dinner, finishing their work day, and getting ready for as restful night as possible in the frigid climate of Snezhnaya. You typically would as well, but with a lot to reflect on and frustrated energy, you brushed off the snow on your person as you entered a Fatui training facility. You gave a quiet greeting to the guards who manned the building, who stood at attention at your arrival. You paid them no second thought as you began to navigate the pristine building.
You followed a path down the corridors you knew by heart, as even years before your ascension to being a Harbinger you found yourself here more than at home whenever your weren’t on assignment. Most windows into the various gyms were dark, and the ones with people in them had young recruits of little consequence to you.
You turned a corner when you heard someone calling for you. You processed the distinct voice as Childe, the most recent addition to the Harbingers. You ignored him, hoping that your increase in pace would not catch his attention. You mentally pleaded that he would avoid the archery range in favor of the other combat gyms.
He didn’t stop, as he never did, as his voice continued to come your way. You closed your eyes in weak attempt to hide your wince as he addressed you by name, by your real name, not your Harbinger title as the other nine would.
You stopped dead and turned to where he was trailing behind you and gave him your attention, unfortunately rewarding his bad behavior, “Titles only, Childe.”
“I wasn’t sure you could hear me” Childe responded, now standing tall right in front of you, his smile still the same, ignoring or otherwise completely unbothered by the standoffishness on your end. “I wanted to see if you wanted to spar while you’re here.”
Like clockwork. Every damn time you came in here and he was here too he’d ask. Each time you’d say no. Each time he’d hover around you until one of you had to leave. It had worked for the other Harbingers, as he now paid them no mind but for whatever reason, he still engaged with you. Tonight, you hoped your verifiable excuse and unfriendly aura would be the last straw for him.
“I’m just going to be doing target practice today,” you said, hoping to deter him. “I don’t want to do anything too strenuous today.”
“Oh you are? Do you mind if I join you?”
You blinked, “I didn’t know you knew how to use a bow,” you verbally dug your heels into the ground, even though you knew he could just walk into the range and practice along side you if he so wanted. There were no restrictions to who could use what when, but you desperately wished he would take a hint and leave you alone.
“I’ve been practicing on my own more recently, actually,” explained Childe, “And considering you’re the best archer among us, I can’t imagine having a better training partner.”
You narrowed your eyes at his compliment, while delivered earnestly, you couldn’t help but interpret his words as being subtly facetious. Since Childe sidestepped your frustrated hint with ease, you relented with a sigh, “Do as you please.”
The two of you headed to an archery range, Childe walking along side you, while you stewed in silent annoyance. So much for introspection time.
No one quite knew how to pester quite like Tartaglia. It was the popular opinion among the other Harbingers that the 11th was obnoxious. While you and your contemporaries preferred to work in the shadows and keep the often extreme extents of your servitude to your Archon hush-hush, Tartaglia, or Childe, as he preferred, ended up with a style that was far more akin to a performance. However, unlike most performers, he would make sure that his performance would be the last his audience would ever see.
You stopped in front of a door to the small range, opening it up unceremoniously, and Childe followed close behind. The room lit up, and illuminating the long room with three suspended targets, at three distances. Even with the unwanted company, you stretched and warmed up on autopilot, the silence between you and Childe surprisingly comfortable.
You glanced over, Childe having gone through his warm up routine faster than you. He had called his bow already, and you found yourself gawking at the absolutely abysmal posture he held as he aimed at the closest target, the one on the far left.
His shoulders were hunched and his bow hand gripped the bow in such a way that seemed entirely unsustainable. The arrow sat flimsy in his drawing hand, the only saving grace of the shot being the strength with Childe drew, which was borderline disturbing. You weren’t sure if he was showing off, or if he genuinely didn’t know to hold back.
You held your tongue as you watched him fire the shot, your eyes barely able to follow as the arrow swiftly embedded itself deep into the target, although the hit was only one by the smallest of margins
You watched him fire two more arrows, the second being a ring outside of the bullseye, and the third a near miss from the top. Both would be a challenge to pull from the targets as the fletching of the arrows were barely all that stuck out.
“See, I have a problem with being consistent in the hits I land,” Childe sighed, aware that you were observing, “What would you recommend?”
You took a deep inhale, “I think most children who pick up bows for the first time don’t have posture as bad as you.”
Childe flinched, his body language exaggerated, a pout resembling a kicked puppy having formed on his face, “Cut me some slack, I’m self taught!”
You remained unrelenting in your onslaught, “That’s obvious,” you scoffed, “You put way to much strength into the draw, especially when you can barely hold the bow itself. I’m amazed you hit the target at all.”
As as satisfying as it was to drag his form through the mud, Childe’s hurt expression only seemed to deepen, and you let yourself be worn down. “Draw the empty string, I’ll tell you what you need to fix.”
He did as you asked, and you rationalized to yourself that you were ultimately helping the Tsaritsa if you assisted Childe here. If he were ever stuck in a situation where he could only use a bow, you didn’t want him to be caught with his pants down. As invasive as he was, you didn’t want him to die or anything.
You lightly tapped his upper back, “Don’t hunch.” He fixed himself quickly. You moved his elbow up on his drawing arm, and went around to bend his elbow on his bow arm, going in quickly, and touching his as little as possible. You gave explanations for why each mistake would be detrimental for any kind of combat, and how to develop instinctive shooting, while making him maintain proper posture.
You were surprised how well he seemed to internalize what you explained, and you didn’t stop yourself from going into more detail than was feasibly retainable, but he stayed attentive, and showed a passion you weren’t expecting. You eased into a comfortable rhythm, and with rudimentary fixes, Childe was able to improve.
Time passed quickly, your engagement far more than either of you had expected. Childe had been trying to gauge you for a long time, but your persistence into giving him as little as possible became entertaining in and of itself. He enjoyed the open resentment of the other Harbingers, and before you had let your shell crack, he had enjoyed yours just as much.
Your patience with any mistakes was unexpected, your exasperation and irritation with his presence having dissipated entirely as you focused on helping him despite yourself. It was endearing seeing this side of you, a side that showed itself with surprisingly little prodding or string-pulling. It felt… natural, and unfortunately for you, it was also very endearing.
“Hey, [Y/N],” he started, interrupting a demonstration you had started about sights, earning a surprised look from you as he got your attention.
It took a split second, but you noticed he used your name instead of your title, your guard went back up, and you narrowed your eyes at him, “Don’t speak informally with me, use my title, Tartaglia.” You hissed out, using his official title instead of his preferred to emphasize your distance.
“Why? You can call me Ajax,” he offered, testing the barrier you set up. He hid his surprise when you hesitated, pursing your lips. He saw through how you tried to treat him apathetically, and forced yourself to be unkind to him. You were so much softer than you wanted anyone else to be privy to, and Childe was excited to exploit it.
In your own head, you had reached a conclusion that you weren’t sure he had reached, or if he even noticed in himself. You could have been way off, but as someone so at odds with his peers, seen as a tool by his superior, and feared by enemies and underlings alike, the pieces fit in your head and spelled out the fact that Childe was probably lonely.
Realizations clicked together quickly upon this conclusion, but you kept them to yourself.
“I won’t,” you maintained, refusing to let up. You couldn’t stop sympathy and understanding from now changing the tint of your interactions or how you viewed them, but you didn’t have to let him know any of that. Childe wasn’t your business, no matter how much he wanted to be.
“Aw, don’t be like that,” Childe cooed, holding back a patronizing urge to pinch your angry cheeks, “I just wanted to ask why you’re helping me, since you seem to dislike me so much.”
You shifted your weight where you stood, “I don’t think you’d leave me alone either way.”
“That hasn’t stopped you from ignoring me before.”
Resentment bubbled in your chest, “So you are aware that you’re a pest.”
“Only because I like you.”
You were baffled that he could just say something that familiar, and you hoped any warmth that showed itself on you wouldn’t be interpreted as anything other than embarrassment on his behalf. “Well, stop.”
Childe seemed more amused than anything at your words, it only feeding into his idea that you’re just playing hard to get, “Am I really so unlikable?”
“You have no idea.” Any understanding you gained during your interactions being emotionally tossed to the wayside as your couldn’t bring yourself to care about someone with such a deliberate lack of regard for boundaries.
You disarmed yourself and made way to the door, pulling it open only for it to shut fast before you could blink. Your eyes followed the gloved hand that slammed it shut, Childe now far closer than you have ever let him get before.
You didn't want to turn around, and when you did you found yourself regretting it. His eyes were cold, completely unamused at your intent to leave while he was enjoying your company so much. He didn't mind a chase, but he needed you to realize that he was serious, and very difficult to deter.
If being pleasant and fun wouldn't get you to loosen up, he could change his approach until you changed your mind.
It had been a very long time since you felt this small. You’ve always been aware of Childe’s strength, but at the end of the day, despite his irritating nature, he was an ally. Or was. In that moment you looked up to see his lighthearted facade disappear so completely, you understood that regardless of your allegiance to your Archon, he was a threat.
“Don’t go, I still have so much I’d like to learn from you, [Y/N].”

Sakusa
Tumblr media
Dating Sakusa was the last thing you ever thought would happen to you. He filled your days and nights with such love and passion. You had broken through his stoic and cold shell and had seen him for who he truly was deep inside- a loving partner through and through.
Of course, old habits die hard. Since he had spent years of his life being a reserved person, only putting up with his family and teammates, he still was very hesitant when it came to affection. Sometimes all he wanted to do was to be alone with his thoughts and nothing else. It hurt to see him like that, knowing that no matter what, you couldn’t help him, but you understood and gave him the time he needed.
Five months into yours and his relationship had lead to a few disputes, but nothing too serious. He was a prideful, headstrong man which lead to you having to bite your tongue during arguments and keep your snarky words to yourself, refusing to let them slip off the tip of your tongue. If they did, the argument would escalate.
You loved Sakusa for everything he was, bad parts and good, but sometimes he was too much.
And, that’s how you were here, biting your lip harshly as you stare at him, refusing to let your anger get the best of you.
Sakusa had been coming home quite late due to volleyball practise, but it got to the stage where you were scared that he was doing to overwork himself and injure himself. Instead of letting it slide, you confronted him about it and suggested that he should take some time to let his body heal from the strenuous training regimen that he was doing. It seemed that Sakusa wasn’t in the best of moods and had snapped at you, shooting abhorrent words towards you as if you were nothing but a pile of shit, accusing you of restricting him from reaching his full potential and trying to turn him away from volleyball because you were too clingy for his liking.
“Fucking hell (Y/N), you’re so fucking clingy! Just because you’re an attention whore and want me to worship you doesn’t mean you can try and take me away from what I love doing. You’re so fucking obsessive it’s driving me crazy!” Sakusa bellowed and clenched his hands together, his nails digging into his hands.
Taking a deep breath to keep yourself as calm as possible, you spoke in a soft tone, “Omi, I’m not trying to keep you from anything. I just think you should rest your body before you overwork yourself and become ill or injure yourself. I know you want to improve but that can happen gradually over time. I doesn’t need to happen all at once.” You murmured and gently placed a hand on his, trying to reassure him.
Letting out a deep, angered growl, Sakusa pulled away from your grip harshly and pushed your hand away, “don’t fucking touch me! You’re fucking disgusting! All you do is hold me down and try and control my life, you obsessive pest!” He hollered out.
His words ripped open your chest and stabbed you in the heart repeatedly. You felt like you were choking on your own heartbeat. It hurt knowing that your lover found you disgusting. A strong feeling of rage surged through your veins. “How fucking dare you, Sakusa! I’ve done nothing but tried to help you and all you do is treat me like shit. Every time we argue I have to bite my tongue because I know that if I retaliate, you’ll just get even more angry. I can’t express how I feel to you anymore and I feel as if I don’t matter in this relationship. If you want to overwork yourself and injure yourself then fine, go ahead, but don’t blame me for saying I told you so after it’s happened!”
His eyes narrowing at your words, Sakusa swiftly turned to glare at you and raised his fist, poking your chest aggressively, “Fine, I will then because I’m not letting you control me anym-” He paused mid sentence, his eyes widening when he noticed you flinching when he raised his hand. Slowly, he lowered his hand and dropped them at his sides. Your shaking figure made his heart clench painfully tight. “(Y/N) I-”
“I can’t do this anymore, Sakusa.” You voice whispered, barely loud enough for him to hear. Tears rolled down your cheeks and you sniffled quietly. “I can’t handle this pain anymore. I can’t handle feeling like I’m walking on egg shells with you. I can’t handle being afraid of how you’ll react when I speak about how I feel. I just can’t do this anymore.” You voice got quieter and quieter the more you spoke. Looking up at Sakusa, you swallowed thickly. “I can’t do us anymore.”
Sakusa was frozen, watching you carefully. It was deathly silent. The only sound he could hear was the sound of his heartbeat beating rapidly.
“I’ll pick up my things tomorrow. I’m going to stay at Atsumu’s for the night.” You whispered and turned away, heading towards the front door.
A small, almost whine-like noise left Kiyoomi’s mouth. He reached out and clasped your hand gently, tears forming in the corner’s of his eyes. “Please.” He begged quietly.
Looking back at the man you loved, your heart shattered into small pieces when you noticed his dampened eyes. Never had you seen him cry before. “What is it?” You asked quietly, biting the inside of your cheek.
Sakusa pulled you in tightly for a hug and pressed his lips against your cheek gently. “Please don’t leave. Please please please… I’m so so sorry (Y/N).. I didn’t mean anything I said. I love you and I’m grateful for everything you do for me. I’ve just had a really bad day. Please I love you. Please don’t leave. You’re my baby... “ He pleaded softly and held you tightly, as if afraid that you’d disappear if he let go.
Letting out a sigh, you caved in. You were still mad at him but at the end of the day, you loved Kiyoomi more than anything else. You would give up everything for his happiness. “Kiyoomi...” You whispered softly and then turned around so you were face to face with him. Gently cupping his cheeks, you sighed, “I love you so so much Kiyoomi... But you can’t say stuff like that to me even if you’ve had a bad day. You really really hurt me even though I was just trying to look out for you.” You explained and frowned softly, kissing his tears that resided in the corner of his eyes.
Pressing his lips softly against your hands that rested on his face, he let out a shaky breath that he didn’t realise he was holding, “I know... I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. I promise I’ll do better..” He whispered gently and pressed his nose into your hair lovingly. “I love you so much...”
Leaning in closer to Sakusa, you inhaled his scent, “I love you too, Omi..”
He never wanted to see you flinch like that again.

Kenma
Tumblr media
Kenma was an erudite genius when it came to the art of strategy. His deep understanding of the game and the unspoken pledge to win is what drove him forward and kept him reaching, grasping, clutching for new strategic idea that would leave his opponents breathless.
For days, maybe even weeks, on end, Kenma would be researching, training, and repeating the process until he felt confident in his methodology that would be used in a game. Thus, led to a breakdown. After weeks of undereating, lack of sleep, training beyond his physical capabilities, and his mental strain thinking of ways to defeat the opposing team, Kenma was at his wits’ end.
As his partner, you immediately noticed the changes in his personality. Of course, concern was your initial reaction and you were somewhat frightened of irritating him more, but you knew you had to confront him about his lack of self care. Seeing him train during lunch and falling asleep in lessons led you to realise how hard he was working himself.
So, after school you managed to pull him to one side before he proceeded to train at the club. A frown was present on your lips and you took a deep breath. Looking at him now hurt a lot: his eyebags had considerably increased since the last time you saw him; you could now see physically where he had lost weight from undereating for weeks; his eyes seemed a lot duller; his body slouched over slightly, as if it was begging for a break. It was agony to see your partner slowly harm his body and mind like this.
"Kenma, just know I love you so much and I understand that volleyball means a lot to you right now since it's your final year with your team as you know it with Kuroo as captain, but look at yourself. You're not taking care of yourself at all. You aren't helping you or your teammates by undereating and not sleeeping." You murmured gently, taking Kenma's hands in your own. You knew that you had to be careful and not push your boyfriend, but you couldn't let it continue.
Kenma simply frowned at your words and pulled his hand away from yours, "(Y/N), I don't need your lecturing. I'm perfectly fine taking care of myself. I don't need you." He hissed out and turned his back on you, proceeding to head to practise. He had no time to waste on pointless conversations.
(Y/N) grinded their teeth together, their heart aching slightly at the harsh words, "I'm not lecturing you, Kenma! I'm doing what a s/o should do and I'm looking out for you! Please just take a small break before you overdo it!" You hallooed, as if that would make the words sink in.
Vexed, Kenma turned around with a deep scowl on his face, "Why don't you just back off, (Y/N)!? I don't care about you right now, all I care about is me and my teammates winning this game!" He shrieked, which caused you to trip back and swallow thickly.
A small whimper escape your lips and tears formed in the corners of your eyes as you flinched. You were normally fine with Kenma's salty attitude, but he never usually shouted at you. Taking a shaky breath, you looked at your boyfriend dead in the eyes, "fine! Do what you want to do! Since you don't care about me I won't bother anymore! Don't you fucking dare come running to me when you overwork yourself and can't handle it anymore!" You retorted and turned away.
Kenma's eyes widened slightly at your words as he watched you turn away. "Wait...." He whispered out, his hand reaching towards yours. Lightly, he grasped your wrist and sighed, pulling you close and burying his head in your shoulder. "'M sorry... I'm just so stressed..." Tears brimmed his eyes and he sniffled softly. "I didn't mean it..."
Letting out a soft sigh, your shoulders relaxed and you pulled your lover in for a cuddle. "I know you didn't mean it baby... But remember your health comes first, volleyball after." You whispered and gently stroked his hair. He simply nodded in response and hugged you tighter.
Maybe you both could work things out. You just need to learn to communicate more.

Solace.
SUMMARY: you find yourself going to visit General Kirigan in the night.
PAIRING: The Darkling/General Kirigan x heart render! reader
Warnings: the beginning of a toxic relationship
--
The urge to flinch away from and melt into the feeling of his fingertips, too temptingly warm, as he grazes them across my knuckles and up to my wrist is almost overwhelming. When the unexpected contact is something I manage not to shy away from, Kirigan’s touch becomes more confident, turning my wrist in order to expose my palm. He lets out a low breath, if he was anyone else I’d think that a sound of tiredness. He drags his index finger down the back of my wrist and over the lines etched into my palm. There’s a new tension to his touch as if he’s searching for invisible answers in the natural creases of my skin.
“You could stay,” Kirigan’s voice is as supple and alluring as sin, “Just for tonight.”
Waiting him in any capacity twists at my heart in a way I can’t comprehend or justify. There is so much of him I do not know, so much of him that’s darker than the inky shadows he bends to his will. “People will speak.”
It’s the kind of shy cop-out he doesn’t like. The kind of shyness that leaves everyone losing. I can make out the way he pulls his eyebrows together despite the only light in the room coming from a small lantern on his bedside table. I’m not sure if I’ve displeased him. Perhaps I’ve reminded him of why he felt the need to take me from everything I’ve known. Maybe he’s seeing how far I am from what he wants me to be, or maybe he’s seeing the opposite. I’m not sure which possibility scares me more. I’m not sure if I want him to turn me away or persist that I stay.
“If you’re defined by what people say,” he taps the back of my hand as if to mark his point, straightening and letting the contact between us disappear, “You’ll never be what you want to be.” The tone he uses is one you’d use to scold a child, “Did anyone see you?”
I don’t think he’s trying to fluster me with potential scandal, but the lack of warmth from the returned absence of his proximity is making this situation a lot less appealing. And without his easing touch, I’m too clear headed to ignore the dangers of this.
“No,” I try to sound factual, nonchalant and at peace with this entire situation.
The tilt of his head tells me that none of the casualness I’m desperately trying to manufacture on a surface level at least came off as believable. He takes a partial step forward, extending his hand and casually squeezing my hand, pressing my fingers into my palm.
“You came to me, little wolf.” I swallow back my embarrassment. It had been a lapse in judgement driven by what...a deep loneliness that comes with being taken away from everyone you’ve ever known? “Why?”
I wish I had an answer to that for myself. Because he’s the only one that speaks to me as if I am not less than? Because each short brush of our hands has made me yearn to know what purposeful touches from him would feel like? Because it’s dark and I hate being alone in the dark? Because I can’t sleep without seeing every mistake I’ve made?
Yes. I could attribute my lapse in judgement to all of this. I could attribute my mistake to some other factor that my mind cannot process. Exhaling slowly, I reach for his pulse with my mind, hoping to see if he truly is as calm and steady as he seems.
“You’re not as subtle as you think you are.” The words are enough to stall me before I can feel more than two heartbeats. They seemed even, but I didn’t hear enough off of them to be sure.
I swallow back the embarrassment of being caught. “How?”
If I didn’t know any better I’d consider the easy quirk of his mouth as an almost smile. “An answer for an answer?”
More generous than he usually is. I keep my jaw as set as I can manage. “I don’t--I’m not sure why.”
He keeps his face unreadable. “You swore you’d never look for anything from me, that you would never…” Kirigan shifts closer. “That I’d always be a villain to you.”
There’s a surprising amount of restraint in his words. Had I hurt him? The ridiculousness of my thoughts causes me to wrinkle my. He is a villain, he has to be, and yet here I am. “My insults do get particularly creative when I’m upset.” My attempt at humor falls oddly flat. Kirigan’s clearly not in the mood for a lighter atmosphere. “I wish I knew why I came here.”
Shifting even closer, he raises a hand. I don’t understand what his intentions are until I feel a brush of knuckles against my cheek. The touch is too soft, too much of a reminder of all the absence...all the places where we’re not touching and the fact that I resent that.
“When you tap into your abilities your brow furrows,” he pulls his hand away from my cheek and gently taps the space above my left eyebrow, “Right there.” Oh. Such a small thing to pick up on. “Even when you’re not doing anything particularly strenuous--it’s more an act of habit.” I don’t know if there’s a way to respond to that. “And when something upsets you that you want to play off, your eyebrows furrow here,” he touches the space between my two eyebrows. “As opposed to when you’re particularly focused on something and your,” he pauses, thumb brushing my bottom lip, “Lips press together.”
My stomach flutters and knots all at once. His thumb stays on my bottom lip for longer than it needs to, neither  of us in a hurry to leave this moment. I wonder if he’s as afraid of what comes after this moment as I am-- thoughts of both the potential more and the potential nothing make my heart ache. His thumb brushes down the corner of my mouth and chin.
“There’s a danger in desire,” his voice is so low I almost miss it, “But I think you know that by now, little wolf.”
Feeling like a chided child, I dare to raise my chin a fraction of an inch but all that does is press my face into his touch more. “I’m not a victim of desire.”
“I’m glad you feel that way.”
So now he finds humor in the situation. Fantastic. “People should know you more for your wit.”
I don’t hide my sarcasm, but his expression retains all of its easiness. “I guess the ones that matter already do.” The touch of lightheartedness evaporates as quickly as it appeared. “Will you stay?”
This is different from the first time he mentioned me staying. The first time it was an option he presented, but this time, with his voice the closest to vulnerable I’ve ever seen it, he’s requesting my presence. For the first time I let myself picture it. Staying here. Falling asleep here. With him.
Cautiously, I meet his gaze. “Just for tonight, right?”
“Stay with me.” He repeats, a bit more certain, a bit more...needing. “For tonight.”
My body nods once without my permission. I wonder if this is how people feel after I use my abilities on them. That one tiny, unrestrained signal is all he needs. Kirigan angles my head slightly before brushing his lips against my cheek, the warmth of his breath against my skin is enough to leave me melting.
“I--I wish I knew why I came here.” The words are more honest than I intended them to be.
Kirigan pauses, warm breath still fanning across the side of my face. “Maybe it will become clearer when I turn you into my solace and my solace alone so that I may be the only thing you can find comfort in.”
His words are gilded tar, dark and suffocating blackness disguised beneath a thin sheath of gold. “I don’t understa--”
“You will.” The urgency of his tone strips him of all lazy softness. Something in me tenses, the shift too sudden and cold and similar to the way he was in the beginning. The tension does not go unnoticed, Kirigan fights against it easily, brushing his lips against my skin again. “Lets get some rest my little wolf.” He squeezes my arm easily, the touch leaves my skin tingling in warmth. “Tomorrow things will be different for you.”
“Different?”
“Training,” he replies easily, “Together we’ll see what you can do.” His fingers brush up my arm and across my shoulder easily, my breath stalls. “We’ll bring out that facet of your abilities that came out the day we met, and with that we’ll change the world.” I do not think myself a world changer, but the softness of his touch and the praising quality of his tone leave me with no protest. “And we’ll find solace in only each other.”

pt. ii || pt. iii [series complete]
a/n: I am so sorry for how painful of a series this turned out to be. I promise it'll end happily at least? Had to break it into two because of how long this was getting, but pt2 should be out in a few days
warnings: angst with a happy ending; eventual smut; natasha being publicly mean to wanda and calling her awful things which leads to her crying; idk this just.. hurts..
summary: wanda tends to be clingy. nat finds she can't always handle being the support, but wanda is actually the one trying to support her this time.

There was nothing like coming home from a mission, especially one as strenuous as this. After four days, three destroyed HYDRA bases, and one really aggravating tryhard crime boss, Natasha was more than ready to collapse in her own bed. There had been a few losses and although Clint tried to frame it as a few vs many situation and he was technically right, but any life unsaved hit Natasha harder than it ever did him.
Decompressing was an essential part of the former assassin’s recentering process. She had a tendency to experience delayed reactions; stone cold and the rock of the team until she could be by herself with her thoughts. Only then could she safely feel wholeheartedly. It could be lonely, but it worked and prepared her for the next world-saving feat.
Her suit hit the floor with a thud; she’d pick it up whenever she woke up next. The shower was quick, just enough to get the dirt and sweat from the past days off of her skin. She washed her red hair as efficiently as she could, silently grateful it was still on the short side as she rinsed the soap from it under the showerhead. An old t-shirt from some small country she’d swiped for cover stretched sloppily over her head and her towel-dried hair was pulled up into a half-assed ponytail before she flopped onto her mattress with a grunt. “Finally..”
Natasha was somewhere between rationalizing her mission mistakes, analyzing how she could’ve saved everyone if she’d just been better, and sleeping when she felt her mattress dip behind her. She’d been staring blankly at her wall, facing the dark window and somehow missed the door opening, but she knew who it was without having to turn. There was only one person who’d dare come in without explicit invitation.
Resisting the urge to tense and push away when a thin body pressed up behind her, Natasha only let out a rough sigh to acknowledge the girl’s presence. She didn’t want to talk or be around anyone, much less be sought out for support while she was trying to sort herself out. “I’m sorry.” The voice was so small- tired- if the room wasn’t dead silent, Natasha wouldn’t have heard.
Wanda’s warm body was wrapped in her typical red blanket, an object she rarely slept without. The only thing she’d been missing was Natasha. It had become routine for Wanda to spend at least part of her nights, if not all on particularly hard weeks, near Natasha or cuddled up to her in some form. Since the Ultron incident, Natasha and Wanda had grown closer, mostly because Wanda decided to pick Natasha as her new person. In training, she was often paired with Natasha; at meals, she sat next to the redhead silently for the most part and if she spoke, it was either to Natasha or Vision, usually the former. Their arrangement had grown into something akin to a relationship, a deep fondness for each other with an added strong protective force from Natasha. She didn’t fully understand it and if she thought about it too hard, it unsettled her. Growing close to someone wasn’t in the original plan; Natasha only wanted to make the Sokovian’s transition as smooth as possible.
She wasn’t helpless, far from it. Wanda was more powerful than Natasha, but in the day to day, Natasha was usually the one to step up for Wanda. She helped her adjust to life in America, taught her how to hide her thick accent when necessary, trained her in physical combat so even without her powers, she wouldn’t be lost. In their time alone together, Natasha held Wanda while she cried and held her through her nightmares, but they also laughed together, sharing their favorite things with one another and Natasha never said no to Wanda accompanying her on various errands.
“How were you while I was gone?” The breathing behind her told her Wanda wasn’t asleep yet, waiting for her to say something- anything. Her eyes stayed trained on the sky outside, scared if she looked at Wanda, her face would betray her exhaustion.
Truly Natasha loved and cared for Wanda deeply, but she was used to being alone, doing her own thing without worrying about someone else. And she did constantly worry about Wanda, mostly for reasons such as now. Wanda rarely slept well without Natasha close by, she hadn’t had to often since she came from Sokovia. The two fell into a routine and Natasha hadn’t had time to process the change before the girl had just grown used to her presence. It hadn’t been a problem, things had thankfully been calm in the past months, but with this latest mission Natasha had been tasked to leave for days at a time- something Wanda was not used to.
While she worried about how her brunette was fairing each night alone, Wanda too missed her more each day she was gone. As much as it made her feel alone in the too quiet nights, it made her angry with herself that she couldn’t deal with the lack of Nat for less than a week. After the first night, Wanda had given it a full effort to sleep well and it worked alright. She was proud of herself, but of course she still looked forward to Natasha returning. “It was alright.” She was as much of a comfort blanket to her as the fluffy fabric she’d inadvertently covered both of them in, but Wanda was glad to have the opportunity to find out she could manage on her own whenever she wanted to. “I missed you.”
“Yeah…” Natasha didn’t want to turn her away. Wanda didn’t do anything wrong, she just had bad timing. She needed some alone time at least, just to settle in, switch from the intense mission environment into the strange domesticity of life at the Avengers Compound. They hadn’t talked about Natasha’s rituals yet; it hadn’t come up until now so she knew she couldn’t fairly hold it against Wanda. The thought of being emotional support right now set a pit deep in Natasha’s stomach; she didn’t know that’s not what Wanda wanted anyways. “Go to sleep, Wanda. It’s late.”
The brunette nodded slowly against her neck, nose brushing the still damp hair at the nape of her neck. “Goodnight, Tash.”
“Goodnight, Wanda.” She pushed her wrestling thoughts down, unable to feel like she could think through them with a clingy mind reader attached to her hip.

“Ah, reunited with your puppy again!” Tony was pushing it today and he knew it. But what was the point of visiting the Compound if not to annoy everyone in his path?
Natasha turned to growl at the man, ignoring the hand that tightened reflexively on her wrist. It was true that Wanda tended to hang out with her when she didn’t have anything better to do, but she disliked being likened to a needy dog and Natasha hated the comparison for both of them. Nonetheless she let the comment slide for once, too irritated to humor him.
Still he wandered around the lounge, tinkering with some internal hardware around the room. “Taking the passive route today, Romanoff? You must be tired.” He wasn’t looking at them, but his eyes went wide when a perfectly aimed butter knife rooted itself into the wall inches from his nose. Tony turned slowly, eyes narrowing at his tightly wound teammate.
“Keep talking and you’ll need FRIDAY to help you get that screwdriver from your ass, Stark.” Natasha sat stiff as a board on the otherwise comfy couch and Wanda looked up at her, concerned. Everyone was used to Tony’s teasing, especially Natasha. It was unlike her to lash out so quickly. She was the one with the witty retorts, one of the only people who could shut Tony up instantly with a sharp-tongued insult and she never threatened anyone physically over something so small.
“Tash? Are you-” But Nat was shushing her with a pat to the cheek before she could finish her sentence. Comforting, but hard enough to add edge, warning Wanda not to push it.
Before Wanda could analyze the situation further, Tony was backing out of the room with his hands up. A dangerous smirk set in on his face as he rounded the corner to safety with one last daring push, “Give your puppy a few head pats and I’m sure you’ll feel better. I hear it’s therapeutic!”
Natasha was out of her seat so fast Wanda barely saw her move. “Nat, stop! It’s just Tony being Tony.” The redhead rolled her eyes, jaw clenching impossibly tight. “It’s fine.” She could feel her ire growing, bubbling under her skin, but she shook it away yet again. It was not fine, she was not fine.
“Yep, peachy.” She sat back down and forced herself to relax before she was pulled into a cuddly embrace from Wanda, knees pushing onto her lap.
Wanda could sense something was off, but Natasha was a steel trap- she said she was okay. She wanted to ask, but was sure she wouldn’t get more than a ‘I’m alright’ so she let it pass and laid her head on Natasha’s firm shoulder. After all, Natasha would tell her if she needed to know; she trusted her to be honest. The only thing she could do was try to offer whatever comfort she could in the form of her arms around Natasha’s slim waist, thumb rubbing calming circles into her hip. One of the subtle aspects of her personality- a facet Wanda figured out for herself after many nights swapping life experiences- Natasha didn’t always feel safe. Not in the physical sense, but emotionally; she had at least five brick walls up at any given time and breaking those down only exposed a tidbit of vulnerability.
Opening her up was easier once Natasha was relaxed, often wordlessly leaning into Wanda’s hold before voicing what’s on her mind. She’d never brought it up to Natasha, scared she’d pull away if she even hinted at having sensed a bit of perceived weakness from within. But Natasha enjoyed feeling needed sometimes; finding it safer to be honest with someone who’d be unguarded right back. “I missed spending time with you while you were gone.”
And I miss having both of my hands free. “Me too, Wands.”
✣ ✣ ✣
Training was set for outside that evening, field endurance becoming a necessity the more they seemed to end up fighting their enemies in rough terrains. Unfortunately the unpredictable northeast weather blew in a storm and after a dreaded drench from the sky, Steve and Natasha decided to call everyone inside for an early end. “Alright, the weather’s given you a pass, go get cleaned off!” Steve’s voice boomed through the main training atrium, everyone’s mumbled responses following as they scattered and fell into their own small talks.
Natasha was grateful for the short night, hoping she could maybe get in a good turn with the punching bag and work out her frustrations. Surely that would help.
However, mid conversation with Steve about shifting surveillance focus, a familiar presence wandered up to her side. Tired as she was, brain disoriented and cluttered, Natasha took a double step and Wanda bumped right into the back of her. “Oh, sor-”
“Could you maybe give me two inches of space? Just for a few seconds even?” Natasha spun around in a fury, calloused hands pushing Wanda away from her with way more force than needed. The brunette stumbled back, but caught herself with the help of the wall, more so with the wall catching her.
Stunned by Natasha’s mood change and the impact of the metal to her back, Wanda could only mumble a simple “I didn’t mean to...”
“You didn’t mean to what? Hover so close to me that taking one misstep makes you fall into me like a toddler?” She was overreacting, she knew it, but she couldn’t stop now. Every shouted word eased her strained mind. “Tony was right, you are a puppy! But, I didn’t ask for one. You’re around me all the time, you can’t even sleep without me. You’re an adult and yet all you think about is where I am and just how long you can glue yourself to my side every single day!” It wasn’t true, they both knew it. Still the accusations cut deep from those full lips.
She didn’t know what to say… what could she say to that? “I didn’t know it bothered you that much, Tash...” Wanda was on the brink of tears, face hot from the upset of Natasha turning on her so quickly, so publicly; the embarrassment of the entire team being privy to her weaker moments and just how much Natasha apparently despised it.
“Having someone right by my side 24/7 is more than bothering, it’s infuriating! I can’t stop worrying about you because you’re always right there.” Vaguely she registered Steve warning Natasha to leave her alone, at least continue the conversation privately. She kept going.
“I’m not your mom or your brother or your Tash, I didn’t ask to be your anything so WHY are you around me so much?” Her frustration finally found an outlet in Wanda and she hated how good it felt to finally decompress. She shouldn’t do this, shouldn’t take advantage of the fragility she’d been entrusted to keep safe. “It’s pathetic, you’re acting pathetic.”
“Just give me space for a minute, can you handle that? Or will you cry about that too?”
Wanda bit her lip hard, drawing blood without care. She nodded quickly, eager to get out of there and away from all her new teammates watching her with dreaded pity. “Y-Yeah... “ Her bottom lip quivered and she felt the first stinging tears streak her face. “I would have left you alone if you asked. Forgive me for believing you when you said you wanted me around.” She hated how shaky her voice sounded, betraying how rapidly she was falling apart. Red grew around the rims of irises, sparking at her fingertips as her emotions started to get the best of her. It hurt her to run away like a frightened kid, but she was frightened and unlike the woman in front of her, she wouldn’t use her powers to hurt.
Natasha caught one last look at Wanda before she ran off, all big watery eyes and shivering form. She looked so small and scared, exactly like when she first arrived-Natasha’s heart cracked with the weight of what she’d just done.
She didn’t mean it. Not really. Space would be nice once in a while, but she hadn’t meant to break the poor girl down so hard- she wasn’t mad at her directly. Wanda was long gone from the space, but Natasha went to go after her, to apologize before she did something she shouldn’t. Her powers still scared her, Natasha knew that. They could overwhelm her and she constantly feared accidentally losing control and hurting herself or others. Past that, she needed to apologize. Knew it was of the utmost importance before the one person she loved spending time with shut her out for good. Steve’s hand grabbed her arm before she could, gripping with the restraining force of the super soldier he was. “Steve, let go. I have to go get her.”
“I think you’ve gotten to her enough for one day, don’t you think?” His expression was terse, disapproving. He wouldn’t budge. Everyone else’s face was the same; those who dared sparing her a glance at least. “You wanted her away, she’s away. Now let her be.”
Her head hung in shame, red hair shielding the others from the few tears that now fell from her own eyes. “Fuck.” She’d used the wrong punching bag by mistake.
