The more she looked, the more she could see hints of darker blue in the vision shards; the vision itself. They were too far away for Mirabel to tell exactly what the shapes were though.
It was a good thing Mirabel liked swimming.
Feeling more and more nervous, Mirabel gingerly climbed over the railing, clinging to the cold metal for dear life. She balanced precariously, staring at the shimmering water.
“Help Isa,” she whispered to herself. “Help Casita. Help the family.”
Mirabel took a deep breath and dived.
*
As the pieces slowly begin to fall into place, Mirabel discovers that even her fearless big sister can get scared.
Julieta makes a small rebellion.
Mirabel goes for a dive: she's got a vision to uncover.

Can I know more about the treatment Madrigals received from scientists?
Absolutely!
Warning: potentially sensitive topics below.
Julieta never went through much treatment - they would bring in injured/sick people and she would heal them. The scientists just swapped out what tools/equipment and ingredients she could have, to see if it changed anything. She got off the easiest - sometimes she would treat the injuries of the rest of the family.
Pepa was given a lot of hormonal enhancements to test the full capability of her gift. She was drugged so often, she usually ended up sick and would have to be healed by Julieta. They also put her through other forms of torture to elevate her emotions - at one point, she was impregnated and forced to carry the baby. The infant lived (they let her keep it, in the hopes it was powered) but the scientists forced Pepa to accidentally kill the baby in a severe hurricane a few months later.
Pepa, Isabela and Luisa were also made to test their gifts on each other - fighting against one another (one v. one). To see what would be the best in battle.
Bruno didn’t have much testing. He was just making visions - how far into the future could he see? How informative could his visions be? At worse, he might have gotten insomnia and some bad headaches, but it was never vital enough for him to see Julieta. As the years passed, he became more compliant with the staff and learnt some favouritism.
Beyond the above, Isabela didn’t have much testing either. She was expected to learn about nature and went through lessons, if you will. Her tests were more about the manipulation side of her gift. They would put her in difficult and/or deadly situations to see if she could use plant life to save herself. She also grew a greenhouse in the science lab to give them access to a wide range of drugs/poisons. She was sexually harassed and assaulted by some of the scientists.
Dolores was usually tormented by the staff, who would purposefully slam doors loudly or scream into her cell at night to startle her. Besides that, her tests were some of the more humane ones. They would make a variety of quiet and/or distant sounds and expect her to write down what she had heard. She always got the answer right. She was also sexually harassed but not to the extent of Isabela, due to favouritism.
She and Julieta would usually find themselves rewarded for their compliance by gaining a bathroom in their cell and full access to food/water. This would be extended to Bruno later on.
Luisa was heavily abused. They would massively beat her, have her fight against some of the strongest/most dangerous animals and weapons, and they forced her into manual labour. They just wanted to know how far her strength could go, how far they could push her before she snapped. They had a machine that restrained her and they would drop weights for her to hold - adding more and more, only stopping when her bones started breaking.
Camilo was also pushed to extreme levels of working out and other strenuous activity, to see how long he could hold a variety of forms. They tested to see if him having little energy or food would also make a difference, resulting in him being behind on growth as he wasn’t fed enough. He did briefly engage in the fights with Pepa, Isabela and Luisa, but stopped when the scientists realised he didn’t gain the actual strength when shifting into a more muscular form.

I wanna write a fic maybe expanding over ten chapters (to those waiting for the next gen AU fic I swear it’s coming isjdjdn) with a gift swap scenario but the switch leaves everyone with a power that’s very unconventional to their lives.
Because in the movie the reason many of the family members had quarrels with their gifts was due to the fact that Alma got to dictate how they’d be used. The gifts are meant to be extensions of the family, but I want to see a situation where the magic goes “you guys are straining again ✨family bonding time✨” and swaps their gifts.
My current idea is:
Julieta - Shapeshifting - I want to see an introvert like her get a gift that forces her to be in the spotlight. By getting Camilo’s gift she’s encouraged to be more risky and makes mistakes.
Pepa - Future sight - A little on the nose with this one but I think because of her anxiety, her main takeaway would be she can’t control the future and whatever happens happens.
Bruno - Enhanced Super Hearing - Somewhat same vain as Pepa where he learns he can’t control what people think and feel about him, as the enchanted hearing allows him to hear all the negative things people say about him.
Isabela - Animal Communication - had a debate with myself between giving Isa super strength or animal communication but I decided the ladder because she might have too much fun with super strength and I can’t have that. Working with animals might make her a little more emphatic and give her a better understanding towards nature.
Dolores - Super-Strength - Still a little in the edge with this one but perhaps time management? Dolores often uses her gift by just milling around where with Lusia’s gift she’d have to constantly be running and running.
Luisa - Healing with food - PATIENCE. Cooking is an extremely difficult and tedious process. And though Luisa is a hard worker, she only really knows how to run not walk. At first I’d feel she’d be very frustrated, moving too fast and trying to get a recipe done so she can move on, but eventually she learns to slow down and take it one step at a time.
Camilo -Weather Manipulation - He has to learn to be vulnerable with people. Camilo is absolutely that kind of person to bottle shit up but with a cloud over his head 24/7 that’s not an option anymore.
Antonio - Plant Manipulation - ehhh I’ll be honest I’m still figuring out what his lesson would be. Antonio is pretty baby so unlike the rest of his family the magic might not give him a super hard time with this one. Perhaps it’d be a case of learning control and also a chance for him to communicate with other walks of nature outside animals. Also it’d be hella funny if he’s making flower crowns and behind him Camilo is quite literally laying in a puddle of his own sorrow, Dolores broke down the guest room door, Luisa is covered in flour, Isabela is trying to get a cat off her head and Mirabel is screaming at the sky because now she has to babysit the other idiot grandkids that have dangerous gifts.
Mirabel — No gift — yeah she’s not getting dragged into this— or not getting dragged into this with a gift at least. She still has to help figure out how to switch things back and also acts as a second hand when the swappies begin floundering too much. So in short: she is still the therapist.
If anyone has ideas on how they could be swapped let me know. Again the swap is meant to really challenge the person by giving them a gift they wouldn’t do well with so it forces them to adapt.

Power swap au.
Just, Alma ignores the cloud and sends Mirabel to water the crops. She doesn’t want to let go though, and so it doesn’t rain. She hears the farmers talking about her being useless even with a gift and. HELL. BREAKS. LOOSE. (Do you know what a supercell is? Imagine it but ten times worse. She totally causes a flood)
Also, the way I thought the gifts would scramble is a bit different than the one annon said;
It would only affect blood Madrigals
Alma gets the visions, so now it’s HER job to tell the villagers the bad things that will happen and SHE gets the hate for it (Or not, since she is kind of the leader of the village)
Julieta and Pepa are the gift less ones since they are overworked and have depression
Bruno can talk to animals (This one was not decided, and when that annon made their ask and mentioned “Bruno talking to the rats” the only thing I could think for the next ten seconds was “YES!”)
Isabela gets shapeshifting; (I don’t have to be perfect anymore, I can literally be ANYONE!!)
Dolores gets the healing food, since I think it was going to be her gift in the beta version of the film
Luisa gets the super hearing, as she NEEDS to feel useful by doing SOMETHING, even if it only is to deliver messages. Until she hears the whispers about her baby sister 🫤. Suffices to say, she gets MAD (and she’s the tallest in the whole family
Camilo would get the plant gift. At first he’s like “And what am I supposed to do with this?”, but then he starts pranking people with it (I gave him too much power)
Mirabel OBVIOUSLY gets the weather gift, or this would not be funny (hehehe, I like angst)
Antonio get super strength, and even though some villagers try to get him to work for them, he just points out some tasks are stupid (moving the church?), some others are completely doable without super strength (you should gather your donkeys yourself. And fix that fence!), and some are… (WHAT did you do to TILT your HOUSE???). And if a villager gets too pesky, he’ll do the task. But will “accidentally” mess up (what do you mean? OFF COURSE it was an accident 😇)
Nahhhh that’s not gonna slide 😭😭the fact that Alma is still tryna force them to use gifts…like yess!!!! Go and give us nothing!!!! At least this way the family can play off not doing as many chores because they don’t know how to properly use their gifts 💀

Encanto Power Swap (Julieta)
I try to imagine a Gift Swap AU, but I have trouble to give a power to each person, so I’m trying to imagine what would be the Madrigals like given their personalities, with another Gift.
We begin with the eldest of all, Julieta.
Weather Emotions : The weather would be a lot sunnier given the woman’s serene attitude, but don’t try to provoke her or hurt her family, because her storms and hurricanes are ten times worse than Pepa’s.
Future sight : Julieta would become completely superstitious, though not as bad as Bruno, and is often compared to La Llorona because of her water visions and her distant looks. Her animal friends are frogs. Everytime she gets a vision, she tries to warn the concerned person/party, and never gives up in helping people.
Chlorokinesis : Being the eldest, Julieta was expected to be an example for her younger siblings, and with the ability to make flowers, it’s not an easy task. She can grow flowers and vines, but also medical herbs for chemists and became the non-official doctor until one of the grandchildren’s healing gift… unless one of her siblings is the healer.
Super Hearing : Julieta is a great mother, but she can be a worrywart if she can’t hear her daughters. After 45 years of hearing everything, she has learned to adjust well to her hearing, but her daughters are often annoyed because they feel like they have no private life with their mother who can hear everything.
Super strength : Julieta is often asked to help in town with her strength, but unlike Luisa, she is ready to drop everything if a family member is in trouble or if we ask too much from her, as she doesn't care about her reputation.
Shapeshifting : Julieta might have a sense of humor, but she doesn’t really use it to make people smile. She uses her power like a therapist. She shifts into the concerned person for therapeutic purposes, so they can feel better about themselves.
Zoolingualism : The first thing she will do is to ask the bees to stop stinging Agustin and give an animal for each of her children and nephews : A cat for Isa, a donkey for Luisa, a puppy for Mirabel, a bat for Dolores, a chameleon for Camilo, and a jaguar for Antonio, much to Pepa and Félix’s dismay at the latter. But what seems like an affectionate present is to secretly spy on the grandkids to know if they’re alright.
No Gift : Julieta will feel burdened by the absence of power and the fact that her mother ignored her or told her to step aside. She feels taunted by her siblings, but she doesn’t hold it against them nor the other family members, and decided to cook as a way to compensate. When her daughters were born, she did her best to become the mother she never truly had.

So I listened to the podcast with the Jared/Charise/Byron interview shared by @madrigaljail and I noted some things said in there! I'll make some comments between brackets sometimes.
You can listen it here!
Powers were often swapped around (Like Dolores having Julieta's gift!!!)
The project started 2 years onto Zootopia
Encanto is a family story different from other family stories
Family is complicated
They didn't know the names at first, they only knew that there will be a bunch of kids and one is ordinary
The backstory of Abuela is the core of the story
The project started fall 2016
They spent months researching
Disney prioritized researches (obviously)
It's not a religious miracle, only a miracle for the family
It's a story of families around the world
Things aren't always fully explained in magical realism, it's open to interpretation and Disney typically never have done that (They talked some times about Magical realism I don't know if they really understood it. I didn't understand Magical realism either when seeing things about it)
The magic in the movie is unique (Really? Maybe)
The antagonist had to be from inside the family so conflict are more nuanced because they all love each other, they're missing each other (Of course! PEPA LOVES BRUNO!)
Isabela is antagonistic toward Mirabel
Not having a villain permitted them to concentrate on the characters
At some point they thought about making Julieta the antagonist (That would have been wild wow!)
They ended up spending a lot of times with the characters and it helped for making the movie (I can understand that.)
It was overwhelming to write the dinner scene because of the number of characters
The song The family Madrigal is super important
Bruno's role on the concept of the family's symbolic role is "The outcasted, the troubled family member"
When thinking about his power it appeared seeing the future and be blamed for that would be horrible for Bruno
First he was 1 or 2 years older but finally it appeared to be better if he was already gone when Mirabel is "experiencing a sort of kick in"(?) (What the heck are you saying Jared?)
They wanted to have Mirabel have the stake "if something doesn't go right with you in this family you can have to leave it" (AAAAAAAAA)
Because it would be a fate worst than death, her biggest fear (Oh my!!!)
No way Abuela didn't come to Bruno to ask him for any danger "I have to protect this family"
The most important thing about Bruno is he loves his family and leaving was the better act to prove it
WDTAB came late in the project
The animals were talking at some point and in WDTAB the Toucan was saying about Mariano "he's hot" (...Bruno is ho*sbaff*)
They hope that WDTAB's demo will one day be released (me too lol, could be funny)
In a version Mirabel was directly going to Bruno's tower
Mirabel is doing all of that to prove her worth to Abuela more than to save her family
Abuela is a complex character because she's the Abuela, she's the matriarch
She's not a true antagonist
She was one of the earliest characters
She was sometimes too antagonistic, and some other times not antagonistic enough
Dos Oruguitas was meant to make audience's heart understand Abuela better and feel her
The scene in the hideout was pretty difficult because you have to shift from a goofy scene to a sad discovery. At some point it was too sad (for example the scene were Bruno is talking to one of his rats I guess)
Waiting on a miracle is that big angsty teensy song where Mirabel is wondering if she belongs in the family
Abuela was 25 when she lost her husband
In the prologue Abuela is telling the story to Mirabel and gives out all of the hard parts, then it was interesting for the story to be retold through a different lens
Again, thank you @madrigaljail for the link!

Encanto Sequel TV Show Ideas Part 2
1. Idea of each Madrigal child in the same order placement working together - meaning the oldest children (Julieta, Isabela, and Dolores), middle children (Pepa, Luisa, and Camilo), and youngest children (Bruno, Mirabel, and Antonio) in teams working together for some reason.
2. A flashback of what the family was going through during the time Mirabel ran away.
3. The life Alma had prior to meeting Pedro and prior to them being forced to leave their home.
4. An out there one but Mirabel has been stated to be 15 and usually I don’t like retcons, but this would be (arguably) a small one. What if Mirabel celebrates her 15th birthday, her quinceanera? And she’s almost 15 in the first movie. Wouldn’t be a HUGE plot hole. But the story would center on Mirabel’s 15th birthday and the family excited, but Mirabel isn’t. After what happened at her fifth birthday, I wouldn’t be surprised.
5. A “Home Alone” style episode featuring either Mirabel or Antonio.
6. An episode where everyone swaps magical powers.
7. What Bruno’s life was like when he was hiding in the walls of Casita.
8. Antonio trying to be more “grown up” for his siblings and cousins when he somehow notices the huge age gaps between them and feels like he’s not as mature as them.
9. Visits from the families of Agustin and Felix.
10. Doloriano, Feliepa, Agulieta dates
11. Alma announcing that Mirabel will be her successor of the family, causing the latter notable self-confliction.
12. Mirabel revealing that a part of her is still angry with how the family (notably Alma and Isabela) didn’t believe her claims and thought the worse of her.
13. Camilo showing some of the issues he has with identity that wasn’t explored in the movie.

Oops...
Succession to this, this, and this.
The family talks about mishaps while using their gifts. Inspired by a post I saw of the triplets having much worse scars but idk where it is so if anyone can find it and link it that'd be greatly appreciated!
Madrigal Family x gn!reader(familial)
Warning! This chapter contains mention of scars and nasty accidents! If that's not you're thing keep scrolling.
---
You were working in your room. A part of your project was bothering you, so you brought out some of the tech in your room to test. Leaving it run while you made a list of variables to test.
CRACK!!!
Searing pain shot down your spine, leg and arm on your (non-dominant) side. You yelled because that is a reasonable reaction to whatever the hell happened.
You checked the damage, spiraling burn marks ran down your arm. You pulled your hand away from the desk, revealing a hand-shaped burn mark and further marks running down the desk's leg.
Electrical discharge.
The fact you could still feel and move your arm and leg meant there wasn't any nerve damage, at least. But you figured you should at least go get some food from Tia Julieta, as the parts in question still felt tingly.
---
You find your Tia in the kitchen. She just started preparing lunch. "Hey, Y/n! Getting hungry?" she pondered.
"Getting hurt." You replied, holding out your arm.
Julieta wipes her hands on her apron, holding your arm gingerly.
"Ay, Y/n... Did you forget to turn something off?"
"You could say that."
She walks away, coming back with an arepa, pressing it into your hand. "Here. Eat up, Mijo."
You took a bite, and while the tingling faded, the scar remained.
"Um, Tia...?"
Julieta, however, wasn't concerned. "You really are part of the family, huh."
Your confused silence prompted her to explain.
"Surprising as it may be, every Madrigal, gift or no, has had a mishap within a year of their gift ceremony, leaving something that doesn't quite heal right." She displays her left hand to you, and you notice the tip of her index finger is... Well, squarer than the rest. "That happened literally the next day. Abuela was teaching me how to cook, funnily enough." she giggled like it wasn't that bad, but you just stared in a weird mix of awe and disbelief.
"You guys talkin' about gift scars?" You hear Bruno, and spin around to see him poking his head in through the doorway.
"Gift scars?" You're only further confused.
"Yeah, everyone in the family has one."
You hear Julieta sigh as she steps into view, "Bruno has this theory that the magic is "getting used" to you and gives you a scar as a reminder of how dangerous your power can be if you're not careful. But it doesn't explain how Mira, Felix, Augustin and Abuela got theirs despite not having gifts." She emphasized each name with a flick to Bruno's shoulder.
"That doesn't mean it's not a big adjustment! A new person is joining the family, lots of uncertainty."
You glance between your Julieta and Bruno, and decide to leave them to arguing about the semantics of the arcane. You had things to do, anyway.
---
An hour later finds you by the riverside, helping Isa set up a raft to grow aquatic plants on. You'd swapped your pants for shorts and had rolled up your sleeves, so of course she was going to notice.
"So you got yours too, hm?" She asked, planting a bundle of basil in one of the raft's baskets.
"That was oddly nonchalant, the way you asked."
"Doesn't answer my question, Y/n."
You sigh. "Yeah. Left something on while workshopping."
...
"Do you have a gift scar, Isa?"
"Ugh. Don't tell me you actually believe Tio's theory." she groaned.
"I don't!" You reply quickly, "I just don't have anything else to call it."
Isa hums, "Well, I do, to answer you question." She steps her foot onto the raft, showing her ankle to be slightly swollen, "Turns out, I'm allergic to daffodils. The other one's like this too."
You wince. "That's... Good to know though! Just because you can grow it doesn't mean you should in case of, like, an allergy or something." You tried to be positive, you really did.
---
After lunch, you and Dolores were reading together in her room. She had a book you would call a classic, and you had a book from your time that the miracle was able to conjure up for you.
...
You notice the silence is a tad heavier.
You hear Dolores squeak, and she flips to the next page.
"Yeah, I got a scar from my gift." You say.
She squeaks again, "I didn't want to bring it up, you sounded so... Conflicted about the whole thing."
"Well..." You mark your page and close the book, "If it's just another part of proof I'm a Madrigal, why question it at this point, si?"
"Yeah..."
...
...
Dolores pipe up again, "Y'know, it's hard to get a scar with a gift like mine. But I have one."
You glance in her direction, "Really?"
She nods, pulling up her skirt to show a darker-colored patch on her knee. "I got distracted by a cart giving out and tripped. My hands got roughed up too, but they healed completely."
You hummed in thought.
---
Dinnertime rolls around and you're at the table, wondering about the rest of your family's scars. But at the table feels too impersonal, so your musings are kept to yourself.
Antonio spends a lot of time with animals, that jaguar has to have gotten too excited at one point.
Camilo can shapeshift, so if he's got a scar he's probably hidden it that way.
You can clearly see the mark of a stray bolt on your mom's shoulder.
Your dad probably has something similar, just in a place you can't easily see.
You never saw Bruno's scar, but it more than likely came about due to how much glass he handles, accidentally cutting himself on a vision.
Luisa... Her gift is super strength, right? A gift like that's bound to make one careless.
How the non-magical family members get scar clearly related to magic, you can't tell. But you notice Abuela has a scattering of irregular dots on the back of her hand, undoubtedly from her first year as keeper of the magic. Something from the house more than likely.
Mirabel doesn't have any scars that you can see, but who knows?
Augustin's face has a smattering of dark pinpricks. The bees never seem to give him a break, it seems.
"Y/n?" Abuela asks.
You startle, "Eh, yes Abuela?"
"Why are you so pensive, Hijo? Is something the matter?"
You think for a moment, "Er... No. Nothing that should be asked here."
...
"Very well, then. But if it's still bothering you, you just say something. Alright?"
You nod, and go back to eating.
Yeah, it's way to personal a question to ask at the dinner table.
bro this is such a cool idea i love your writing so much and i can’t get enough of it!!! literally screamed when i saw this in my ask box LMAO i know exactly which post you were talking about the second i started reading it’s this one. i love the way how this is so thought out and how the family interacts and it makes me realize i miss the abundance of encanto fics :(( but seriously this is SO amazing like how reader got their scar and how everyone else’s scar is also revealed too is just so ahhhh! you should write more, you have a talent for this!

I'm just imagining an Encanto AU where everything is still the same but Julieta is the one who can see the future and Bruno heals with food.
Just picture it with me.
Julieta's gift of healing with food kind of made her into the ultimate powerhouse maternal figure. Especially in most latino/hispanic cultures (from what I have observed) it is considered a "woman's role" to take care of others with things like cooking and repairing what has been broken.
Now imagine a Julieta, who is still a maternal powerhouse but instead of healing she tries to use her visions as cautionary tales or teaching lessons.
The village is still scared of her, still believes she is a source of bad luck.
But Julieta still has Augustin, who didn't believe she made the future happen. He was accident prone before meeting her. Just now she uses quick glimps to warn Augustin of his potential injuries and advise her brother how much extra food he'll need to make for her accident prone husband. They both chase Agustin around with the magic food She still gives birth to her three daughters who she loves more than anything. She is still the triplet that speaks against her mother to defend her family.
Bruno who is now the golden child of the triplets, and the most useful, is still socially awkward, and superstitious. His sister's can tell when the food choice is something on the saltier side. While his gift is useful he's only really approached for healing food and he's been doing that since he was five. He's overworked and is constantly in the kitchen. Making food in case of emergencies. He's still the rat man with rat children.
Mirabel's failed gift ceremony happens and Alma begs Julieta to look into the future. After comforting her daughter to sleep Julieta walks down into her vision cave where she sits on the end of a peninsula of an underground lake.
In her hands sits a blue tablet showing her youngest daughter. One side has casita whole, the other full of cracks.
Julieta is terrified for her daughter, Alma will demand to see the vision. Julieta knows from experince that once Alma knows it will end horribly for her daughter.
Julieta will do anything for her daughters.
Augustin goes to find his wife but only finds an empty cave and a smashed vision.
For 10 years no one talks about Julieta. Her door has stopped glowing. Augustin took the spare bed in Bruno's room, the two growing closer as Bruno helps with raising the girls. It's Bruno's involvement with helping raise his nieces that Augustin has not followed through on his threat to take his daughters and leave Casa Madrigal.
Augustin is more quick tempered with Alma, more ready to defend his daughters.
Isabela resents Mirabel even more, blaming her for their mother's disappearance.
Luisa doesn't blame Mirabel, if anything she's probably more protective of her than in canon. She does hold a secret resentment towards the town though. She believes they pushed her mother over the edge. Especially when she hears what people whisper from Dolores and by her own ears.
Well one of those girls had to be bad luck like their mother.
Julieta should've stopped after one. She got lucky to have a perfect daughter like Isabela.
Yeah she should've counted her graces that only one is a fuck up like her.
Mirabel wished someone talked about Julieta Madrigal. Actually talked about her, what she was like, how she looked, how she spunded. Did she prefer sweet or spicy foods? What was her favorite shade of blue? Did she love her youngest daughter? Mirabel has no memories, or very vauge ones. She has no idea who her mother truly is. The only comfort Mirable can bring herself is that sometimes it feels like Casita is trying to minic what she thinks is Julieta's voice. Giving Mirabel words of encouragement, praise, and love. Despite this attempt Mirabel might hate herself a little bit more, after all she was such an embarrassment that she drove her mother away.
Julieta does a better job at hidding in the walls than Bruno. She sneaks out a back door from her place in the walls before anyone wakes up and returns when she knows Dolores goes to sleep. She adds to her brother's herbs that she has spent all day collecting. Then wonders upstairs. Checking on each of her daughters, leaving them gifts before going back into the walls.
Julieta patches the walls for years. Taking notice of the pattern of when Mirabel is stressed or in pain the cracks show more. Casita has more than once woken Julieta up to one of her daughters having a nightmare. No matter how old they are she holds them close singing them back to a peaceful sleep.
Her brother's rats keep her entertained, always performing Bruno's latest telenovela for her. They help her sometimes by bringing things when she mistimed her coming back and can't make much noise in the walls.
She never expected one of her visions to be something they would bring her. Or that she would be reunited with her youngest daughter five minutes later after ten long years.
Bruno's rats led Julieta to one of the holes in the floor.
Julieta let out a gasp when she saw who was dangling by one of the floorboards. "Mija!"
Mirabel stared at a face simliar to her own as she gets pulled up. "Mama?"
Julieta checks her daughter over for injuries before pulling her into a tight hug. "Mi amor what are you doing back here?"
"What am I? What are you?" Mirabel spluttered, just examining her missing mother who was apparently never actually left! Mirabel glances over, loosing steam as she takes in all the repaired cracks. "Have you been patching these?"
Julieta sadly traces over the cracks, they match so well with her vision. "No matter how much I love our family, I won't let even them hurt my daughters. When Mama wanted that vision of you ten years ago I knew I could never let her see it. Even if there was a possibility of it turning out well she would only believe the worst outcome. Just like she and the village believe of me."
Realization dawns on Mirabel. "You left because of me?" Her voice shook, tears falling because they were right, Oh dios they were right she was the reason-!
"Mi vida." Julieta pulled her daughter back into a hug. "I left to protect you. I may regret having to leave but do not doubt I wouldn't do it again to make sure you were safe."
Mirabel gets the idea for another vision, but with Julieta's cave wrecked they needed a new place with open space. Julieta led her daughter to a river.
"I've spent a lot of time here over the past decade. Your Abuela would never come here."
Mirabel looked around, remembering the story. "This is where it all started. Where Abuelo Pedro..."
Julieta nodded. "It's probably the most magically charged place in Encanto outside of Casita."
They do the vision, water forms around them. It's the same as before,no closer to a straight path. Mirabel spots something Julieta couldn't see. They follow it until a new picture forms.
"Antonio the door, the door!"
The rats grabed Antonio's attention. The dead door of the tia he never met, whose room was off limits, was glowing bright and strong. He looked over the railing where his tios were.
"Tio!"
Augustin and Bruno ran rowards their nephew, Pepa and Felix not far behind. All four adults freeze at the glowing door.
Julieta holds a blue tablet. She smiles at the picture. Her oldest and youngest hugging.
"Isabela!" Mirabel rages.
"Mira," Julieta's voice takes on a warning tone.
"Mama you don't understand!"
Julieta raises an eyebrow. "May I remind you darling daughter that I was the black sheep between mi hermanos. And my brother was the golden child."
Mirabel blushed.
Julieta gently set the tablet down and hugged her daughter again, kissing her forehead. "I believe my visions are lessons we have to learn. You and Isabela have been fighting for a long time. Maybe it's time the both of you learned to communicate and move forward. Now go hug your sister and save the miracle. Then after...," Julieta pauses . "After can you tell your papa and hermanas I love them? And tell mi hermanos I miss them."
Mirabel hugged her mother tighter. "After I save the miracle you can tell them yourself when I bring you home."
"I love you mija."
Julieta sat back down in the river, cradling her tablet. "Papa, please protect mi familia."
"The cracks started with you! Julieta left because of you!" Alma yelled.
Mirabel snapped. "Mama left because you always believed the worst in her!"
"Julieta didn't care about this family!"
Mirabel noticed her older sisters flinch, tears forming in Luisa's eyes as they always do when someone brings up Julieta leaving.
No matter how much I love our family, I won't let even them hurt my daughters.
I left to protect you.
Can you tell your papa and hermanas I love them?
I love you mija
Mirabel stepped closer, her temper flaring. "Mama loves me! She loves this family! I love this family! We all love this family! It's you who doesn't care! You're the reason Mama left! You're the reason for the the cracks! You are the reason the miracle is dying!"
Julieta felt the ground shake. Watched as the mountain that hid the Encanto for years split in two. She screamed as Casita fell in the distance.
Her daughters, she needs to see her daughters.
Mirabel ran. She failed. The miracle was gone. Casita fell . She wanted her mama, and her mama was by the river.
"Mama! Mama!"
Julieta stopped. Mirabel needed her. She turned back towards the river. When she got there Alma was with Mirabel. Mirabel was crying, Julieta saw red.
"Mama! Don't touch my daughter! She's not the reason the miracle died!" Julieta yelled, putting herself between her mother and daughter.
"Julieta," Alma breathed. Pulling her daughter into their own hug, kissing her face. "Mija, I'm so sorry."
Julieta glanced down at Mirabel who joined the hug. "It's ok Mama."
They make it back to the ruins of Casita. Agustin and Bruno checking over Mirabel as Alma apologizes to the whole family.
"And I'm so sorry I held on too tight," Alma said before she guided Julieta into the family's line of sight. "Just so scared I lose you too."
"Mama!" Isabela and Luisa rush forward into their mother's arms. Pepa and Bruno hugging their sister from the sides while Augustin hugs her from behind.
"So we gotta talk about Julieta?" Camilo says awkwardly on the side lines. Making a face when Dolores elbows him
"That's Tia Julieta?" Antonio asked confused. She doesn't look like what the rats described to him.
Augustin wraps an arm around Julieta as they watch Mirabel bring the magic back with a twist of a doorknob.
"She takes after you," Augustin whispers in his wife's ear.
Julieta smiles, thinking about the vision she had right after Mirabel was born. "She finally sees what was there all along."

“You didn’t get a Gift?” Cecilia asked quietly, looking suddenly near tears.
Bruno shrugged. “Nope,” he said.
Sierra looked between Bruno, Mirabel and the mural. “If I was you, I’d be really sad,” she said.
Mirabel tried not to wince. Kids were often sweet, but also very very blunt.
If it had been Mirabel, she would have made light of it. She would have tried to distract the kids with a joke or reassure them that of course she wasn’t sad.
But Tio Bruno only stared blankly at the mural for one long moment. He turned to the kids and shrugged again with a wry smile.
“You get used to it,” he said.
***
In this world, the Gifts are all different, but you know how the old saying goes: this changes everything and nothing at all. Mirabel may have a Gift, but Bruno doesn't and Isabela is hiding a major secret in a desperate attempt to protect everyone.
And, as always, la familia Madrigal is crumbling under expectations of perfection.
The cracks are still emerging and it all comes down to an uncertain prophecy, with Mirabel, Isabela and Bruno at the centre.

(Remember how I said this would be uploaded once “Gleaming” was finished? I have no self control 🤷‍♀️)

i have a great idea
What if Madrigal family swapped their gifts for a day
AND NONE OF THEM DON’T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE IT
That would be a great episode if Encanto had a continuing serial
EXAMPLES:
——————
Isabela, having Tia Pepa’s gift: WHY CAN’T I FEEL ANNOYED WITHOUT PEOPLE KNOWING IT?! THEY SEE THAT I HAVE CLOUDS ALL AROUND MY HEAD AND POINT THAT OUT!!! AND THAT ANNOYS ME EVEN MORE!!!!!
——————
Dolores, with Tia Julieta’s gift: I don’t know how to cook.
Julieta, has Luisa’s power: That’s okay dear, first you need to— *tries to grab a plate but breaks it in pieces* oh dear.
——————
Pepa, with Antonio’s power, gossips with animals: No way Camilo did that!- What?— Nooo, he wouldn’t do it,— he’s only 15!!- Wait, what did Bruno said then? Oh mY GOD—
——————
Mirabel, shapeshifter: *mocks Isabela changing into her* LoOk aT Me! I’m sUpEr PuNkY iDeAl GrAnDcHiLd!! WHOMP WHOMP!! *smacks own butt*
Isabela, still tia Pepa’s power: *creates a storm cloud and zaps Mirabel*
——————
Camilo, with Dolores’ gift: *sells secrets and periodically having a panic attacks because of all that noise he can hear now*
——————
Antonio, having a future vision: *prophecies that there will be an explosion of plants and vines*
Bruno, with Isabela’s gift: *fricking MAKES A SUDDEN EXPLOSION OF FLOWERS AND VINES*
——————
Luisa, having Mirabel’s power of being the candle of house: *chillaxes and having a great time of not doing anything for the first time after YEARS*
——————
And Abuela, seeing this kerfuffle: There wasn’t that shit when Pedro was alive *leaves this mess and locks up in her room*

Encanto Power Swap/Random Power Assignation AU
What if the Family Madrigal somehow ended up with their powers all messed up?
Pepa gets the power of making healing food, which is catastrophic when you consider she can’t literally boil an egg to save her life;
Julieta gets the power of seeing the future, which turns her into full Mama Bear in Hysterics mode every time someone steps out of Casita;
Bruno gets the power of wheater control, which immediately covers Encanto in a thick layer of fog since he is confused about everything most of the time;
Abuela gets enhanced hearing, which makes her ecstatic at the perspective of knowing what everyone is doing at any time. The rest of the family is distressed for the exact same reason.
In a turn of events, Augustin gets the power of communicating with animals, which allows him to understand why they are constantly trying to attempt at his life;
Isabela turns out to be powerless, which pretty much starts an identity crisis;
Camilo gets the power of making plants, which he finds boring as hell at first, until he discovers he can grow giant Venus Flytraps all around Casita and scare the shit out of people;
Mirabel gets shapeshifting, which has her like ‘???? What am I going to do with this now??’
Antonio gets super strength, which has him happy until he realizes super strength does not come with super balance. Felix constantly follows him around town to make sure he doesn’t get hurt - and ends up getting hurt himself in the process;
Luisa and Dolores also turn out to be powerless, which suits them just fine.

Oh wow someone write a snippet for the power swap!! So cool!! 😊👏✨️😎😁😍🤩🥳🎉😄👌👍🥰❤️ if you want, here's what I came up with for the rest of the fam(including the husbands! Lol): Abuela- super hearing, Felix-prophecy, Julieta-none, Pepa-shapeshifting, Agustin-super strength, Dolores-none, Luisa-none, Camilo-healing food(he's actually a good cook), Antonio- flower power, and then Bruno and Isa I'm in debate over who gets talking to animals and who gets none, because in the one hand, Bruno-
Tumblr media
Tbh after they every uh thing settled, I don't think they'd even be able to focus on using the others' gift, they're more worried about why tf Mirabel has this dark, black cloud following her around all the time 😭😭 but you know. They'd probably try to get her to spill and fail.
