I feel like I never actually realized how much I needed actually good autistic rep made by autistic people until now
I mean I saw these autistic characters made by neurotypical people and played by neurotypical actors (when actors are needed). And I was like "sure, these are mediocre reps and I despise them, and I wish there was actual good rep out there, but whatever, not gonna happen ig so this is all I got". Then I saw some shows by autistic people and with autistic actors coming out and I thought "oh, cool, I'm gonna watch them when I get the motivation" but then never actually watched them, you know ? I knew I wanted that, but it wasn't like... a priority.
But then I got some free time, "hey, what was the name of this show again ?" and. I ended up watching "A Kind Of Spark" and "Everything's Gonna Be Okay" in like two days. And the whole time I was on the verge of tears. When I tell you I even literally cried at some point in the second season of Everything's Gonna Be Okay.
Because I suddendly realized HOW MUCH I NEEDED these kinds of shows, and how STRAIGHT UP OFFENSIVE all – ALL – of the reps made by neurotypicals are. I never understood how important this was. Representation that is just SO REAL. That isn't the neurotypical interpretation of autism, but really what autism actually is. The difference is just SO MUCH MORE obvious now. All these details overlooked by neurotypicals, all their fantasies about autism. Now I'll never be able to even glance at their shows about autism. I already hated them but now I just think they shouldn't even be allowed to make them
I knew this was bad rep. But I never truly understood HOW BADLY it affected me to see these terrible reps everywhere, and HOW MUCH I craved for actual good rep, until I started crying like a baby the second I saw what good rep actually looked like and felt like to me.
It's so weird because I remember I felt the exact same way when I saw an actually good ace rep for the first time, but idk, I just didn't think I would feel the same with autistic rep for some reason ? Because we have autistic rep way more than ace rep... But it's bad rep so at the end of the day it just feels the same as no rep at all, or maybe it's even worse. The realization hit me like a truck and I am in tears lol

I don't know if I'm explaining this well enough but one reason I think representation is so important is because it helps people explain what they're going through. Like for example being autistic sometimes it's really hard to put in words what's bothering me and sometimes my issues feel too small or I just can't explain and I know there are loved ones who genuinely are trying to understand me. Like now when I need to explain things I can just idk show them an ep of heartbreak high, show they quinni saying that she plays by everyone's rules 24/7 all the time and why it's so hard. It becomes so much easier to explain now. And I am so so grateful for it and I can't wait for more

Traits I wish appeared in more autistic characters:
Has fun with their neurotypical friends. Yes, engaging with your special interests is hella fun, but I feel like neurotypicals having fun and the autistic person being bored af in the corner is slightly overdone.
high empathy in some situations, low empathy in others.
Actively trying to get better at social skills/masking, but knows their friends and family still love + accept them the way they are.
Sarcastic. I may have issues with tone and detecting tone, but that doesn't stop me from saying the exact opposite.
Has the potential to be both the smartest and dumbest person in the room. Extra points if they are smart/wise outside of their SPINs.
vocal stims

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to finally get this book out there but I'm also...very aware that it is probably going to make some people angry because it has "stereotypes." Specifically, the main character is autistic, aromantic, and asexual. Which, yeah, that sort of thing CAN be a harmful stereotype.
But it's also me.
Like. I am all three of those things myself.
It's just that whole discussion of "just because the rep isn't for you doesn't mean it's bad" thing and trusting people to tell their own stories/experiences and all that.
IDK. I'm just interested to see how it goes and aware that it might get bumpy along the way.
Anyway, if you think that sounds good interesting, you can sign up to be notified when the project launches at this link.

I have officially begun my autism diagnosis process
And I am satisfied to have gotten this far in life. At the same time, I'm in an autistic burnout and can barely function and am still learning to care about myself and how to put myself first. In an effort to try to familiarize myself with criteria, please feel free to ask me how or if I think the following characters are autistic. By comparing their traits to the diagnostic criteria, I will be able to make an official headcanon, or I will realize that they are not actually autistic but simply vibe with the lifestyle or something.
Autistic-coded characters in Bojack Horseman:
• Mr. Peanutbutter
• Todd
• Judah
• Charlie Whiterspoon
• Hollyhock
Please ask me my thoughts on these characters/why I think they are autistic to give me the motivation to look at the Diagnostic Criteria for Autism and help both of us get to the bottom to see if these characters are actually autistic or no

So, I watched A Kind Of Spark ! Out of context / small spoilers + 1 or 2 bigger spoilers ?
This show is clearly targeted at middle school tweens, but still, it healed a part of my inner child. This is the first live action show I see with ACTUALLY GOOD autistic rep. Not "better than most", not "not that bad". ACTUALLY GOOD. You can tell it was written by an actual autistic person and it's so refreshing !
The meltdowns were portrayed SO GOOD. I mean it was so well done. It's the first time I see a good representation of autistic meltdowns in a live action show. Usually autistic meltdowns in shows have that neurotypical view on them but here it was just so accurate ! But also everything, every little detail was accurate.
The only thing a little weird I noted is when Keedie has an autistic burnout and it's solved like the next day – I never heard of any autistic burnout that lasted less than a few weeks at least, but maybe it's possible so idk about that, maybe it can happen and I just don't know. That was really the only thing tho. Everything else was just very good rep – you can tell it's targeted at young teenagers, and I think it's perfect for the targeted audience. I just know I would've loved to watch it even more when I was younger.
My inner child was crying tears of happiness lmao, especially with all the little details that mean so much but are always forgotten in shows about autism written by neurotypicals. Here, it was shown in a way that was... So casual. So normal. The autistic sisters getting a different amount of sauce in their pastas than the rest of the family. The way Addie sits. The different levels of masking. The way Elinor stims. How they act when they feel a meltdown is starting. The hyperfixations. The body language. The actual vocabulary used everytime !
If you're seeking for actually good autistic rep, this show won't disappoint ! I want a second season now ! I was getting tired of the neurotypicals' shows about "what if we put this autistic genius in normal life situations so they're awkward" – A Kind Of Spark was just so refreshing !

Shit that may get me cancelled on tumblr:
I find the badly done stereotypical autism "rep" relatable. (I'm not saying I don't think we should have a wider variety of rep, or that I don't see the problems with these portrayals.) However, I don't find them funny the way the creators apparently intended me to.
The fact that these characters never had someone close to them explain social rules like I did makes me feel for them, and in-universe they are likely a victim of parents not knowing how to raise an ND child. That being said, this is an explanation and not an excuse for their actions.

What's your opinion on Entrapta and Entrapdak ? I personally think she deserves better tbh 😔
i don't think entrapdak works. but i'll get into that in a minute.
as for entrapta, she definitely deserved better. more so than just in writing in general, but as well just how she was treated as an autistic individual.
for starters, i want to comment on her design. she does not look like the age she's apparently supposed to be ( according to nate, entrapta is in her late 20s, early 30s ). a lot of people who have discovered this have commented something to the extent of:
"she's 30?! i thought she was 16-18!"
now, if i didn't know her age or personality, i'd assume she was 19-20. but considering that i do know her personality, i'm not surprised that people thought she was younger. her big pigtails, being short, and the top side of her overalls being out of place all are designed in a way that makes her look younger.
the reason why this is an issue is because, with her design and personality, this is infantilizing. especially because every other adult character looks their age, or at least has obvious implications of looking older ( such as wrinkles under their eyes, wearing makeup, etc. ). entrapta does not.
throughout the entire show, entrapta is extremely oblivious, forgetful, honestly rather careless, and generally is treated more like a robotic nuisance rather than a human being that deserves support and care.
she's practically ostracized by the other princesses, is pulled by them, is leashed by them, talked down to by them, etc. she is not actually treated as someone who is wanted, but rather only someone who might be needed.
this video actually discusses low empathy, how to write it correctly, and how SPOP did a complete disservice to entrapta and the autistic community by their piss-poor portrayal of low empathy and autistic people in general:
youtube
as for entrapdak...
i personally feel like nate made entrapta 30-smth yrs old, so entrapdak would be less weird. i could talk about how hordak is essentially a bum instead of a Big Bad, like he's supposed to be, but that's for another day.
the primary issue i have with entrapdak is that it paints entrapta in a really bad light, more than people might think.
many people seem to label entrapta as morally grey/chaotic neutral ( i'm p sure you can look up the spop wiki and see that ), but i strongly disagree with this label, due to how it is written and how it further pushes a bigoted idea of autistic people.
and no, entrapta being written by an autistic person ( tbh, i highly doubt that ) does not mean she's suddenly even decent autistic rep.
entrapta is perceived as "morally grey" purely because of her low empathy. they use it to demonize and infantilize her, instead of respecting it as a part of her identity.
having low empathy does not make anyone a bad person, or even a morally grey person. donnie, from ROTTMNT, has low empathy, but you can tell he deeply loves his family and tries his best to keep people safe.
entrapta's low empathy is represented as her not caring about the lives at stake, only caring about people unless it involves technology, or only doing things because of technology, and is generally either treated like a lost child or like she's a demon.
SPOP's portrayal of autism and low empathy in quite a few autistic people is harmful and gives the same message that neurodivergent in general have been given for years:
"something is wrong with you."
her being involved with hordak, a literal imperialist, someone who does not care for anyone ( except for entrapta, i guess? ), and is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone for the sake of his goals, in any other way but in an antagonistic dynamic is, at best, offensive and stereotypical, and at worst, dangerous.
if you are not autistic, and you want to write autistic people, you need to do it with respect. genuine respect.
you cannot treat autistic people as if they don't know what they're doing.
you cannot treat autistic people as if they don't care about anyone but themselves.
you cannot treat autistic people as if something is wrong with them.
you cannot treat autistic people as if they have to change to be accepted by anybody.
we are not your props for representation. we are people.
all in all, if you want to write autistic characters, do not do what the SPOP writers did. just don't.
and honestly, hordak is really weak in this show, i-
