Desexualized & Asexual are 2 different things
Recently read a take that Isaac in Heartstopper is bad fat rep because "the only fat character was made asexual which is a negative stereotype" & I am BEGGING folks to understand that desexualized & asexual are 2 different things. Plus fat Aces exist & fatness is often used to invalidate asexuality.
We thought that Isaac was just OK for ace rep. We talked about our feelings at length on episode 32 & episode 98 of our podcast. All in all, we just didn't think that his character was anything new or groundbreaking, but with how often aces in real life hear "you're not asexual, you're just fat", it's such a shame that folks out there don't understand that fat aces have their own unique challenges and also deserve rep.
It feels like shockingly similar to when people get mad at Disabled Aces because "disabled people don't have sex" is a negative stereotype. Yes, disabled people are often DESEXUALIZED against their will, which is harmful, but that doesn't mean that some of them aren't ASEXUAL.
Aces come in every flavor, because we're real people. And real people deserve to see aspects of their experience reflected in media without someone else implying that their very existence is inherently harmful.

when j was watching heartbreak high, and the way they portrayed cash and Darren’s relationship with Darren really wanting sex and Cash not wanting to or wanting to take things slow, at first I thought that cash was demisexual (but in a heafcanon way, I kinda assumed that the show would never have actual ace or demiace rep and that im just speculating my own hc and that he’ll actually just be something else other than ace) but learning that Cash is Canonically asexual genuinely shocked me?? (In a good way) like I did not expect this show to have actual ace rep for some reason 😭 like they have lesbian, gay, non binary, autism, etc etc rep but I never thought in a million years they would have an ace too.
The rep in this show is absolutely amazing and I would def recommend for anyone who’d want it 💞💞💞

If we're making aromantic trend today I have to bring forward the first aroace rep I knew.
Roshanna Chatterji in the movement comics!
Tumblr media
(Yes she only says asexual but from context it's clear she means aroace)
The Movement follows a group of teens (early 20s I think a couple) fighting back against police corruption in their area, unfortunately there's only 13 issues.
But Roshanna has been seen in last years (possibly year before) pride comic in the corner of group shots and did get a page in DCs big book of pride so she's not completely forgotten.
Tumblr media
Other members of the group are also queer or from other marginalised communities.
TW for sexual assault, abliesm, homophobia and religious trauma.

El - Happy Pride month to everyone who celebrates it! I hope you are well and safe out there! ❤️
For Pride month, as an aromantic and asexual person, I wanted to draw something that means a lot to me personally. And I decided that it would be fanart of the Japanese television drama series Koisenu Futari (恋せぬふたり).
I first heard about this show from the YouTube channel The Ace Couple. They do podcasts about different topics through an Ace lens and have dedicated two episodes discussing this show. I am going to link the episodes here if you are interested (because, honestly, they do a way better job at reviewing and analysing the show, than I could):
Koisenu Futari: Is this the Perfect AroAce Rep!?
We LOVE Koisenu Futari!
The show is about the lives of two aromantic and asexual people - Sakuko and Takahashi, who decide to live together in order to escape the inconveniences of life. Along the way they learn a lot about themselves, the people around them and just life as a person, who doesn’t fit with the expectations that society puts on everyone. It’s honestly a really heartwarming series with a lot of amazing scenes. There were a lot of moments where our two main characters just stopped to express how they feel about different aspects of life and honestly, a lot of the things they said made me pause and say: “Those are my exact feelings!”. There were also a lot of scenes that genuinely made me cry. I have never watched a show that made me feel so seen, made me feel like I wasn’t broken and that there are other humans out there who share my experience. Another thing that I love about this show is that the two main characters show two different experiences of being aroace and that means a lot. Personaly, I relate a lot more with Takahashi.
If you haven't watched the show yet, I highly recommend you do so. It’s very well written, the characters are very interesting and lovable and the message that is trying to convey is very important.
This got really personal, but I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you have a wonderful Pride month!

I got my first proof copy of my book yesterday. It's 384 pages.
There's margins I need to fix, and I'm still not sure if I want the matte or shiny cover yet but at least I have something I can hold and edit.

last book read + last stethoscope used, part 9
Tumblr media
The stethoscope: Ultrascope teaching stethoscope with orange tubing and a goldfish chest piece (not shown here) I just linked to their website, but as far as I can tell, they no longer offer the goldfish design or even make teaching scopes anymore. It's a very aesthetically-pleasing instrument but I'm not wild about the sound, and all the extra tubing rubbing against things doesn't help matters. Comment here if you have recommendations for really good teaching stethoscopes in other brands.
The book: Dear Medusa, a YA novel in verse by Olivia Cole. I was drawn in by the synopsis--the story of a sixteen-year-old victim of sexual abuse by a charismatic teacher no one in the school would ever suspect is a predator. But this one exceeded my expectations. If I'm honest, I have a habit of forgetting novels in verse shortly after reading them, but the protagonist, Alicia, and her friend Deja stayed with me. Their voices are clear in my mind, especially Alicia's dry humor and Deja's enthusiasm and fearlessness. It's a pretty accurate depiction of high school--you can tell when a YA writer either didn't attend high school or doesn't remember it. Also, asexual rep! Was excited to read that.

Ace Bookclub Recap - Coffee Cake
I love to share ace book recs, but I was a little wary about talking about this one. But my bookclub talked about it for almost a solid two hours - rare in a group that likes to ramble - and I want to just...collect feelings about the rep I guess.
Book has been added to my Ace Rep Database.
Tumblr media
Summary: Bran Kendrick never expected to fall in love. He’s asexual, after all. What chance does he have of finding someone who’ll see past that? So when Malachi Warren catches his eye, Bran tells himself his crush will pass. Malachi disagrees. He has been attracted to Bran for some time, something he is delighted to find Bran reciprocating. They begin to date and feel their way through an intimate relationship that meets both their needs. Suddenly Bran finds himself juggling a new boyfriend, a demanding job, and a college degree he’s not sure he wants, but he couldn’t be happier—until a series of seemingly random accidents befall Malachi. When they escalate, Bran realizes someone is trying to take away the best thing that ever happened to him, and he must scramble to keep Malachi safe while they search for the would-be killer.
Spoilers and smut talk below the cut because surprise! This book a 5/5 on the smut scale. Yeah, we should have read the reviews more closely.
At the end of chapter 5, there had been three graphic sex scenes and that pace continued. And while as a sex neutral ace I don't necessarily mind sex scenes, this many scenes staring two men I saw no chemistry between I couldn't handle it. I DNF'd the book.
Oddly enough, I was the only ace around the table who didn't bring themselves to finish it. Though many people were skimming/hate reading by the end.
We weren't thrilled with the ace rep. Bran does outright says he's ace, but then throws himself into a new relationship - including being the first one to initiate a sexual scene as a virgin - and has zero intrespection about it. For a guy confused and worried about how being ace will get in the way of a relationship in chapter one, it's no longer a concern by chapter three and never is again. It's especially obviously that his orientation was put on the backburner when he does go through a self-evaluation. Determining what his career would be was a plot point, not determining what he might or might not like in a relationship. What a strange thing for a romance.
We never saw him as acting like or embodying an ace mindset. 90% of the book wouldn't change if he had been allo.
That said, the sex scenes were weirdly ace? By which I mean Mal, especially early on, is contanstatly checking in and tells Bran it's okay if he has boundries. (Though they never really have that conversation, and Mal takes Bran initiative in a lot of cases to mean 'always yes'.) There's also never penetrative sex, and I found myself oddly charmed at a scene where Bran gets Mal off and when it's 'his turn' Bran just gets a massage that puts him to sleep. Bran is focused a lot of Mal's pleasure - which does feel very ace - but then he jumps into sex so often it...kinda ruins it.
A lot of us were really happy to see a sexual ace in a book! But the sheer number of times these two did it (multiple times in a hosptial bed too????) cheapened the idea of how rare it is and failed to treat that balance of sex and ace thoughts with any nauence.
Add to that a slew of characters who felt very scripted and a bunch of logical holes in the 'someone is trying to kill Mal plot' every ace at bookclub was just...dissapointed. We had such high hopes.

Inda
Sherwood Smith
Genre: epic fantasy, military fantasy Publisher: DAW Books (Penguin Random House) Year: 2006
Tumblr media
It's easy to tell when certain traits are passed on through family. One of my oldest friends has the exact same sarcastic laugh as her brother. Another friend has a daughter that does the exact same expression of puppy eyes when she wants something. Me? Well, my mom buys stuff off instagram ads like nobody's business. While I don't do that exact same thing, I am easily influenced.
So when I came across a post by @aplpaca about one of her favorite childhood series, I was cautiously intrigued. Then, while waiting for one of my other holds, I discovered my local library had the entire quartet, so I grabbed a copy of Inda, which I read in a single sitting, and I have no regrets (justice for Dogpiss).
Where to even begin? One of my all time favorite tropes is books with child narrators when the books aren't necessarily for children (see: Ender's Game, This Tender Land, Dear Edward). I think children are such an underutilized point of view in books not aimed for children and Sherwood Smith manages it all so well, it's almost like there are two stories happening at once: one in the idyllic world of children and the other harsh light of adulthood.
Inda (who gives Kaladin vibes for the Stormlight Archive fans) is such a singular title character. This first book focuses on his childhood from a bright-eyed second prince to an exiled privateer on the high seas, this book takes you places. Inda, while clearly the main character, is not the only POV character by far. The world Smith builds is fascinating, queernormative, and expansive. It's hard to encompass everything this book is in one short review, so I'll try and hone in on a few specifics.
Smith is such a master of characterization that even the main antagonist, Aldren, most commonly referred to in the book as the Sierlaef, feels tragic. As a young boy with a disability and a distant father, it's so easy to see how in his desperate search for validation, he reaches for the poisonous influence of his uncle. No child should have to bear the weight of such responsibility, distance, and aloofness. As he grows and the adults around him fail him, and he rebuffs all pivotal moments of redemption and his inevitable descent into villainy becomes a tragedy. Just the right word here, a genuine friend there, and the Sierlaef would have grown to be a noble man, if not a good one. Instead, by the end of the novel he goes from misguided, angry teen to a selfish, dangerous, obsessed man. Every single character has this level of detailed motivation, story, and outcome—even the ones you don't like.
This book made me laugh, it made me cry. (Yes, I did cry real tears for a character named Dogpiss by his fellow child soldiers). The love depicted in this book—familial, friendship, duty—is exquisite. There aren't really any romantic relationships I can point to in this installment, most marriages are marriages of convenience or politics and romance isn't a factor. This is a book of loyalty, bonds, and destiny. I can't recommend it enough.

Ok so I watched Skam france s 12 and i’m so happy i stopped watching any Skam remakes a long time ago
Even though every season has its own character it all feels so repetitive and predictable at this point. The characters don’t really have any personality beyond the stereotype they represent. I still aprecciate that they chose to cover asexuality but for me it just felt copy pasted from other seasons but with asexuality thrown on top.
I know people like to shit on Skam france but it really does make me miss the og show, where everything felt deeply thought out and meaningfull.
The weirdest thing was that i felt like i couldn’t really empathise with the main character even though i’m myself asexual. It just didn’t feel like i could get in his head, like it should make me feel. And also i felt like he was treated like shit throughout the season and nobody REALLY took his feelings into account. To me it seemed like nobody cared about his feelings beside the girl he started dating for no reason.
He would talk about actual, valid concerns and everybody was like “you’re overreacting, it will be fine” but it doesnt work like that in real life. Actually the message of the season was kind of just “this is only a problem cause you’re not doing anything about this”, but the only problem they resolved was the relationship drama. They didn’t even show actual problems asexual people face in ace/allo relationships. The only problems were coming from the asexual person because first he couldn’t have a conversation with his girlfriend and next he was distancing himself from the other girl.
They could have shown his girlfriend breaking up with him after he comes out as asexual. Or they could talk about ace people being pressured even after coming out to their partners. They could actually show psychologists who think being asexual is a sign of disorder!!! They could have done so many things but instead they just did the regular: “i’m unhappy cause i’m queer and alone -> i get into problems cause i don’t understand/hide my identity -> coming out -> i’m happy now”
It was somewhat watchable so i have to give them that 🤷

There’s a first time for everything.
First time playing quarters. First time spinning the bottle. First totally hot consensual truck hookup with a superhot boy whose digits I forgot to get.
First time getting pregnant.
Surprised you with that one, didn’t I?
Surprised me, too. I’d planned to spend senior year with my bestie-slash-wifey, Devi Abrams, graduating at the top of my class and getting into an Ivy League college. Instead, Mom and I are moving in with my battle-ax of a grandmother and I’m about to start a new school and a whole new life.
Know what’s more fun than being the new girl for your senior year? Being the pregnant new girl. It isn’t awesome. There is one upside, though—a boy named Leaf Leon. He’s cute, an amazing cook and he’s flirting me up, hard-core. Too bad I’m knocked up with a stranger’s baby. I should probably mention that to him at some point. But how?
It seems I’ve got a lot more firsts to go.
