What do you think makes the original ATLA so good when practically every subsequent piece of spinoff media ranges from mediocre to downright reactionary? Considering some of the stuff the og creators were responsible for counts among the very worst, I don't think it can be blamed on their lack of involvement. Idk I've always wondered about this because it's so strange. Did ATLA end up being good purely by accident & nobody involved in its creation actually understood what they were doing or what?

lmfao i definitely do think masterpieces can be created purely by accident. not that there aren’t elements of careful deliberation and a lot of collaboration involved, but it really was a lightning in a bottle sort of project. like this is just conjecture bc i haven’t seen any of their other projects but apparently the creator of black sails has made some other, bad shows. or the creators of utena as well. see, even, the stupid lame ass ending to fionna and cake. there’s no guarantee that just because someone (or a creative team) can create a coherent, nuanced work means that they can replicate that success ad infinitum.

i think that where atla truly excels is in its character writing, which is why the fandom (a fundamentally character-focused phenomenon) still endures (not that they really get the characters lmao, but at least we’re all way too deeply attached to them in the first place). and the anti-imperialist politics are almost incidental to the show’s success. i’ve said before that it was much easier for liberals to critique american imperialism during the bush administration, because the invasion of iraq was completely inexcusable, and also very easy to criticize if you dress it up in children’s fantasy and always have the defense of going “no, don’t you see, the fire nation isn’t the us, it’s the prc, it’s imperial japan!! you know, our enemies…!” which a lot of people to this day actually believe — not that there aren’t allusions to other imperialist histories (esp wrt the air nomad genocide), but zuko’s whole speech to ozai in “the day of black sun” is literally a critique regarding what it means to live in the imperial core. it’s a western, american show for americans first and foremost.

…. and then lok was made during the obama administration. neoliberal identity politics abound. and don’t get me wrong, some of those identity politics were a good thing, because i love seeing milves and bisexuals and korra just like. in general. but it’s also a show that fundamentally revolves around capitalism as its central theme without every actually participating in a coherent class critique. the closest we get is mako and bolin visiting their family in the lower ring, which doesn’t count, bc that was established in atla.

however, just because atla endures in our consciousness, and i am truly finding new things to appreciate about it all the time, does not mean that it is without flaws, and so i do think that it’s pretty fair to assume that its success as a work of fiction and a work of art would of course be undermined by the economic forces that demanded it continued to expand its franchise for profit rather than out of any narrative or thematic need to do so. it always comes back to liberalism and capitalism. lol

Tldr: banksy is ridiculously anti capitalist. That specific piece itself was inspired by and anti capitalist, anti American imperialist 60s protest in France. Ergo, Miles Bron is EXACTLY one of those morons that banksy would hate and cheerfully get rid of their money for them

See banksy himself is historically anti consumerist and anti capitalism. Like just look at some of these

1. A leopard literally escaping the jail of consumerism represented by a barcode

2. Self explanatory

3. A rather horrific one combining the iconic Vietnam war image of a child subjected to napalm holding hands with the iconic corporations

4. And here’s the kicker, a piece literally criticising the insane amount of money people spend on art

A rather quick search on Google will tell you that it was inspired by a photo of the May 1968 French protests. ( I couldn’t find the actual one but just have a look at these)

2. more students throwing projectiles, look esp at the person on the far right

A far left student protest that was specifically anti capitalist , anti consumerist and anti American imperialism

So the fact that the pice of shite dock uses sculptures imitating the flower thrower is just, chefs kiss level of irony

I used to be anti Israel and anti Zionism back when I was in leftist-only spaces and only consumed pro Palestine media and narratives. I have taken a very long break from instagram (my main social media outlet) and it was really great for me, and helped me see past my views and change my perspective on things and politics. I’m not anti Israel anymore, nor am I anti zionist. In fact I’m so ashamed that I use to blindly believe the narrative against Israel and Jewish people. I realize now so many “anti Zionists” are just anti Jewish hiding behind a mask. I’m ashamed I never said anything even when I felt uncomfortable in their narratives. Recently logged back to insta and it’s so bad. I don’t really know where I’m going with this, I feel bad I’m such a coward but I support Israel and Jewish ppl, and I’m glad accounts like yours exist that tell the truth, even when it’s exhausting.

I know others like me are out there, who are just too afraid to speak out. The pro Palestine/anti Israel movement is very reactionary and cult like. Speaking out even against lies will get you labeled a imperialist settler-colonialism supporter.

I remember getting hate even back in 2021 when I was anti Israel for saying I didn’t see anything wrong with China trading with Israel.

Sorry for ranting, I’m sending so much love and support 🫶🏾

You are not a coward. It takes a lot for people to reconsider their views and to spot the signs of toxic behavior / demands from their "allies." You should be proud of yourself for taking that step.

I have had many anons tell me they have to keep their Judaism / don't-kill-Jews beliefs secret on their main blogs or else they'll be ostracized from their online communities and fandoms, their IRL friend groups. It's not just you. Eventually there will be important literature and art depicting those pressures and demands for silence. It will look like how depictions of the Red Scare look now.

i’m pulling out of the ‘guns blazing’ project and my name and art will no longer be associated with it. i’m committed to a ttrpg space that prioritizes and fights for justice for the marginalized, and is actively anti-imperialist in action, not just in words and aesthetics.

our own identities as artists and devs do not overwrite, and cannot be substitutes for, actually showing up and living our values. i have no praise and no tolerance for members or accomplices of the us military, or any militaries, and i believe that’s the lowest possible bar for any of us to clear. i’ve learned that the guns blazing project doesn’t align with these beliefs and therefore cannot and will not participate further.

EDIT: i realized i want to add a clarification to this, because most of the context for this decision is happening on twitter, not on here, and i don't want anyone who's not aware of/active in the ttrpg space on twitter to take an incomplete or inaccurate conclusion from my statement here.

a prominent award in the community has been given to a person who is an active member of the us military. it is completely unacceptable to me for this to be tolerated in our space, let alone praised or congratulated. this is where the dev and i are misaligned and it's an absolute dealbreaker for me.

So how about that third avatar series, y'all?

So this is a digital remaster of this fan art that I did 3 years ago, when awesome friend @zombiecats707 and I brainstormed a third avatar series during the manic pandemic induced summer of 2020. We came up with a lot of ideas, character concepts, backstories, etc., but we got busy with life and with college so we never followed through on that. However, in the months since I've graduated college, I thought it would be nice to revisit this old piece and freshen up some of the craftsmanship, since, wow, it was quite bad beforehand. I'm glad to say I'm much more proud of the work I did on this in the 3 years since that summer.

So, the story? Read below

Basic idea is that in the years since Korra's eventual death, it's like a Dalai Lama situation. The United Republic or the Earth Republic would become authoritarian to some degree and want their own state-sponsored Avatar for their own personal gain and choose a successor that would go along with their political goals. They announce a false avatar that they've created by means of secret technologic advancement and spiritual manipulation, while the real avatar, a young teen by the name of Huang Guo-Sun, tries to hide the fact that he's the real avatar out of fear of being pursued by the government. This fact does come out eventually and he and his team avatar are on the run from the government and the "anti-team avatar."

Pictured here is Avatar Huang and his Team Avatar: Princess Kaila, the eldest daughter of the Fire nation royal family; Junje Soo, Huang's childhood best friend and earth-nation Airbender, part of a big family of mechanics; Lian Bunmi, his other childhood friend and martial arts prodigy; Tartok Lucassey, a runaway teenage delinquent who acts as the streetsmart "dad" of the group; Lastly, we have Firelord Taozun, the newly crowned ruler of the fire nation after the assassination of his mother; and President Kaemon Ran, leader of a conservative, imperialistic United Republic in what would be an 80s/90s timeline.

We had come up with other plot lines and ideas for a whole series, things like how the spirt laser canons in LOK could be applied to new types of weapons, new types of bending like gravity bending and plasma bending, a journey to the spiritual center of the avatar world, etc. But hey, world building is hard and this was during 2020, so we eventually ran out of steam when things got busy. However, if any of you would like to see more of this and what we worked on, please let me know and I'll try and share what I can when I'm able to! Hope you like this piece!

I have spent an absolutely u n h i n g e d amount of time on this

setting this in the 2370s, on a Lotus Flower class starship (bc how could I not?) with an exploration mission LET'S GO

Captain Kim Namjoon (obviously). A Bajoran, deeply philosophical & anti-imperialist. Top of his Academy class, just made Captain. USS Bangtan is his pride & joy, but his real devotion is to his crew, especially his 7-man bridge crew. His typical uncool Captain hobby (they all have one) is reciting poetry.

XO Commander Jung Hoseok, 2nd in command. Human, curious & deceptively hardy. Joon's details guy. Runs the crew with an effective combination of terrifying strictness & genuine love. Might close his eyes & hold on tight during ship maneuvers, don't call attention to it. Idolised by the junior bridge crew.

Chief Engineer Min Yoongi. Human, but raised Caitian (his parents were Federation citizens living on Cait, he went to Caitian nursery and school, had all Caitian friends and babysitters). People find him impossible to read; this is partly by his design & partly bc his body language is literally catlike. Genius engineer who secretly loves being relied on for miracles, but complains constantly. Very protective. The earpiece is so he can listen to music while he works; you know things are really fucking serious if he takes it out.

Chief Medical Officer Lt. Commander Kim Seokjin. His job consists of saving lives and yelling at people for being excessively heroic. The only one who can overrule Joon, if medically necessary. Enjoys spending time on the bridge making unhelpful jokes. Has ALL the best holosuite programmes. Told half the ship that the old-fashioned glasses are just for show because he likes the vintage aesthetic and the other half that they've got state-of-the-art micro-scanners for instant diagnostic information relay. Actually he's short-sighted but doesn't want to tell his patients he hasn't gotten around to getting that fixed yet.

Chief Comms Officer Lieutenant Park Jimin. Human-Betazoid, with empathetic psychic abilities. The ship's literal mood-maker. Adores his job, which he sees as "getting the whole galaxy to like him". Absolutely fantastic at first contact. Inseparable from Tae; they were the only two half-humans in their Academy class. Jimin had a harder time at school, despite not standing out so much visibly, and has absolutely flourished now he's found his place.

Chief Tactical Officer Lieutenant Kim Taehyung. Human-Orion & more than willing to use anti-Orion prejudices to manipulate situations. He plays up his sexy, sultry, vague persona, but his crew knows he's exceptionally hard to deceive or outmanoeuvre. Deadly loyal, especially to Jimin. Has a reputation for bending the rules, but it's hard to argue with his results.

Helmsperson Ensign Jeon Jungkook. Vulcan, very physically strong, mildly confused by everyone. Ace pilot, set Academy records in piloting & martial arts. It's his first day on the job, first ship, first crew, & he's so determined to impress his hyungs he's kinda scaring them!

Just don't stop talking about us. Don't forget this is the USA's fault too. We don't have donations and we don't need to be saved, we just need you to be anti imperialist in your own countries because this is just a second Operación Cóndor. Stay informed.

I really am not a fan of the idea that a petition or request to a representative made by gringos can do everything for us.
