Basim Ibn Ishaq headcanons

Basim Ibn Ishaq x GN!reader

Word count: 1003

Basim is an “actions speak louder than words” man. He’s kind of reserved by nature and has spent many years mastering the art of controlling his emotions during his time in Alamut.

That being said, his love language is definitely acts of service.

It starts off small – you both have a passion for literature, a common ground he has yet to realize. He’s talking to Fuladh about a recent poem he’s just read, reciting his favorite lines, when he hesitates at the end. He’s trying to remember the final verse when you jump in and quote it for him, and Basim shoots you an amused look.

“Since when do you enjoy poetry? ”

He tries to surprise you sometimes – he likes to lend you his favorite books, and if you indulge the man, he’ll even rant about his favorite poets/poetesses and their works. It becomes a bonding mechanism between the two of you, and it might look corny to an outsider; but you see how excited Basim gets when you say you liked the book he gave you, and suddenly, it’s like their opinion doesn’t even matter.

When the life of a Hidden One keeps you up at night –whether that be because of a nightmare or a stress-induced fever– Basim keeps you company. He knows the feeling all too well and refuses to leave you alone, unless that’s something you want. He will sneak into your room with a bowl of fruit and a book in hand.

“May I offer you a poem in these trying times”

It’s a secret of his, but he likes writing poetry, too. He’ll die before admitting it though – and anyone who dares read his work will have to pry it from his cold, dead hands.

That being said, he might let you read something here and there (only the poems he’s revised a hundred times), but you have to swear that you won’t tell anyone.

You don’t mind. It’s like your little secret anyway.

Despite his preference for acts of service, he’s going to try to compliment you every now and then. You can always tell he’s being genuine, and when you thank him, he grants you a warm smile and a courteous nod.

He’s a very good listener. You could be talking about anything and he’d be listening intently, nodding along and asking questions. And nothing escapes him, really – he’s got an amazing memory and will remember your birthday, your favorite food, the friendly camel you met two weeks ago, or even the day you first saw fireworks.

He remembers that day well. The bright lights were sizzling and popping in the sky as you watched them, transfixed. You’d turned to face him with a big grin on your face, and in your excitement, asked him an obvious question: “Did you see that?”

He smiled and nodded, because of course he did.

He didn’t. He was looking at you.

But besides that, nothing escapes him!

He has a habit of shielding you from the elements. When it’s scorching hot, he hovers his hand over your face to keep the sun from your eyes. When it’s windy, he likes to use his stature to shelter you from the breeze. And on rainy days, he cocoons you in scarves and cloaks to keep you from getting wet.

Basim starts laughing more around you, and you both become incredibly closer. You have so many inside jokes that it’s hard to keep track of them, and perhaps it’s starting to get to the other Hidden Ones too. Roshan just sighs as she watches the two of you because you’re both oblivious fools.

He definitely starts coming out of his shell with time, even dropping a pick up line here and there. The first time it happened it caught you so off guard he panicked and lost all sense of his training in three seconds.

“Well, – Nehal is calling me. I’ll see you around.” and he tailed it out of there, tripping over a vase before regaining his footing and scrambling away.

He wouldn’t approach the subject again, and if you were in his proximity he would be as stiff as a board – until you made a move too. You flirted with him out of the blue and he just widened his eyes and pointed at you.

Things change from there and he tries to flirt more (and he’s so dorky he makes everyone within audible distance groan and leave). You’re organizing the books at the bureau, the one place you probably frequent more than your own home, when he comes in.

“You come around here often?”

You give him a deadpan expression, because he can obviously do better than that, and he grimaces.

“Yeah. No more of that.”

Biggest supporter ever. If you speak another language other than Arabic, he wants to know all about it. He’s a smart man, he can learn a couple of expressions quickly, and pretty soon you’re having simple conversations in your tongue.

That being said, if you cuss someone out in said language he’ll probably try to remove you from the situation. He’s not keen on confrontation, especially with civilians, but if they wronged you in any way, he’d be all like “Yeah, what they said!” “And you better remember it!”

An absolute sucker for forehead kisses. He’s not very fond of PDA but he always kisses your temple when he has to leave or walk past you. It’s a ghostly touch, you almost don’t notice it, but it makes your cheeks flush every time.

Likes to hold your face in his hands and just look at you. It can end with him either smiling and kissing the corner of your mouth (on a good day) or pulling your hood down to blind you and ruin the moment (when he’s feeling a little silly). You call out his name and he just barks out a laugh as he climbs onto the rooftops.

He’s actually a little shit (affectionate) (derogatory)

Because no one asked, I decided to draw up my OWN special interpretation of Team Hooligan, ✨WITH JEST!!✨

Mind you everything is mostly based off of my own headcanon, so enjoy it as you will!! I'll write brief descriptions that you can read right here !!!!

Fang the Sniper/Hunter

He/Him // 21 yrs old // Australian🇦🇺 & Dominican🇩🇴 // Bisexual

Fang is a mercenary/bounty hunter and the leader of Team Hooligan. Though he often works alone for most gigs, he considers his team to be a found family of sorts, despite not always getting along with them. He has a great fascination for guns, but often uses his regular cork gun unless it's for serious situations. He's easy to anger and is heavily motivated by his greed and desire to prove himself as a top notch mercenary. Though things don't always work in his favor.

He's told very few people about his origins, how he had once descended from a noble family, until "one incident led to another and now suddenly I'm all on my own!" The one thing he absolutely REFUSES to tell people is that Fang isn't really his birth name.

• Cocky, Greedy, and Selfish. Probably has a slight tinge of insecurity due to past failures with Sonic and company.

• Keeps cigarette packs on his person often.

• Has a small shack he and the others share together over in Mirage Saloon Zone. He started sharing his room with Jest once she started hanging around.

• Loves mechanics, no one else but him drives the Marvelous Queen, it's a vehicle of his own design.

• Likes playing card games, spicy food, and keyboards.

Jest the Jack Rabbit

She/Her // 21 yrs old // Puerto Rican🇵🇷 & Trinidadian🇹🇹 // Bisexual

Jest is another bounty hunter, who despite her silly clown appearance, is a very threatening figure. She's agile, quick witted, and carries around a baseball bat she calls the Wacky Whammer, that's bound to give anyone a painful concussion. She came across Team Hooligan after they [Mainly just Fang] attempted to mug her, to which they received a harsh beating at her hand. She has found herself to be fixated on their leader however, and sticks around them to watch them struggle for success.

She grew up in a circus with her sisters, before finding herself fixated on the chaos emeralds and chaos energy. Unleashing an ultimate chaos has been her grand goal as she hopes to spread her madness across the world. She plans to achieve that, either by herself or with other comrades as her stepping stool.

• Loud, Annoying and Obnoxious. Loves to push Fang's buttons and watch him lose his cool. Her not so secret crush on him is absurd.

• A known sadist, she enjoys intimidating others and seeks out the emeralds for power and chaos.

• Enjoys gossiping with her friends, Ace and Solar, particularly about the Hooligans.

• What her and Fang have is a somewhat open secret. It's hard to tell if they hate each other or love each other. From their endless bickering to Jest's raunchy flirting.

• Likes cinnamon buns, yo-yos, and fondant.

Bean the Dynamite

Any Pronouns // 15 yrs old // Brazilian🇧🇷 // Pansexual, Genderfluid

Bean is a young and spontaneous explosives expert, with a goofy and hyperactive personally that keeps the team on their toes. He carries around comically large bombs, no one is really sure HOW he does, but they don't ever seem to question his methods. Despite his lighthearted demeanor most of the time, no one can ever seem to tell what he's got cooking in that brain of his.

Not much is known of where Bean came from, but from what Bean's told about himself, he remembers being in an egg. And a great amount of movement. Up until he hatched and found himself all alone in the middle of the forest. Most just assume he hit his head or something before he ran into Bark.

• Silly, Scatterbrained, and Crazy. Hard to tell if he's a bad guy when he's so comedic.

• Fidgets constantly, he can't sit still for more than a few minutes.

• His bombs are handmade, and he likes gifting them to the others as surprises or as little pranks.

• Considers Bark to be an older brother figure who keeps him in check. Buys him Father's Day cards.

• Likes comic books, explosives, and gummies.

Bark the Polar Bear

He/They // 23 yrs old // Russian🇷🇺 & Haitian🇭🇹 // Pansexual Demiboy

Bark is the overall brawn of the team, being the strongest physically and able to do most of the heavy lifting if necessary. He's the most level headed as well, and finds himself being the one to pull everyone back when things get too complicated [If Fang himself isn't having a pissy fit]. He's particularly shy and doesn't really like communicating much with others, as he finds it quite difficult. And despite his rather prickly job, he means well and cares for others like Bean and Amy Rose.

Before he had become a member of Team Hooligan, it's been said that he's gotten his fighting experience from being that of a professional fighter. He doesn't enjoy bringing it up, but he prefers what he's got going on now. If any of the others ask to fight him, he'll consider the offer.

• Quiet, Tough, and Stoic. He cares though, he's just a bit shy when it comes to feelings.

• A walking furnace, he gets warm easily and has an itch for cold food often.

• Used to fight professionally at one point before joining Fang's gang.

• Selective mute and often communicates with sign language or writing.

• Likes seafood, belly rubs, and coloring books.

╰┈➤ Now hear me out. The only time Usopp isn’t a coward in action is if it’s in a video game. This man is a SWEAT TRY HARD in COD. Amazing at sniping, all the cool gadgets and cosmetics. His account is worth hundreds. Will absolutely avoid any COD Zombies mode though

TRAFALGAR D. WATER LAW - Animal Crossing: New Horizons

He says he doesn't play the game and only has it for Bepo but he decorated his part of the island from TOP TO BOTTOM and has all the cutest villagers. He has a soft spot for cute things

my favourite headcanon about ac mirage Basim is that he's constantly showing off. I mean look at him there are lots of bracelets on him, beads, even the way Basim wears his scarf (I may make a mistake with its name so please dont hesitate to correct me) shows how much he cares about being a cool guy. He's the purest boy but I think Hidden Ones have no days without Basim making another stupid shut just to entertain himself

Can we get ultrakill pride stuff!!!! Shakes you around.. I kinda wanna ask specially for v2 stuff since Im so in love with it and your art.

yayayay pride headcanons!! i'm not sure if i'll be good at putting this into words, but i very much love whatever the machines have going on with their genders - v1 is strictly it/its to me, while v2 is an any and all pronouns haver. both of them very rarely experience attraction as well, but when they do, it's a strong pull to the other party who can be any gender or presentation. having my brain rewired by dect like everyone else as well as bc of my own personal interpretation of the character, i like to think v2 would primarily be drawn by intricacies of thought and an emotional connection, as those are incredibly rare for it to find. bc i think of v2 so much as a dreamer, i am absolutely drawn to its chemistry with mirage in her rumination, and i certainly think it could only feel attraction to someone else when it felt its mind and inner self were understood. v1 is its flip side, needing to feel its spark through physical connection, generally through a fight but it's more than just that fight being good - the movements, the attacks, the flow all influence how it feels. overall, v2 is cerebral while v1 is material in how they are attracted to others, because that's how they define themselves in a sense

gabriel is definitely gay to me and very much in the process of figuring out what he likes and how his attraction works since any relationships he's had never got the chance to breathe before this. he does crave a lot of affection and attention, both physical and emotional, and he can be quite romantic but the way he loves and experiences love is very different from humans. i also very much like trans gabe hcs, if only just bc it makes me happy and i think it suits him. bonus for bi minos of course, nb ferryman, and trans sisyphus :] and just in general, i feel so comfy in how the machines relate to their gender so differently and have aesthetic ideas and presentations, but don't identify in binary terms. i'm an nb ace myself with a strong pull to neutral pronouns (esp "it"), so i love seeing machines like the mindflayers that have defined aesthetic/presentation preferences but those don't necessarily indicate their gender, if that makes sense

* all squadrons are now properly 12 aircraft, though most of the members do get the "generic Spare" treatment bc I cannot be bothered to fill up 36 spaces on a TO&E, even for the LRSSG). Rage and Scream, old friends of Trigger's, had their contract bought out by Trigger herself and now fly with the group.

* many cool fanon skins have been turned into full squadrons

* Brownie lives and becomes squadron leader after Knocker bites it being dumb and trying to fight Mihaly (who properly ignored two retreating aircraft openly broadcasting that they were doing so)

* Razgriz is here! It consists of Blaze (proper name I made up for him: Daemon Nacht), Bartlett (now married to his Yuke spy waifu), Chopper (who landed in the river, and still listens to Blurry) and Grimm (who remains as extremely competent as ever). They now fly F-14

* OMC and OANG squadrons get some love!

* Labarthe lives, and unites a lot of the Erusean Conservatives into a functional faction that properly allies with the Oseans. Shilage's independence claim is respected, and so Mihaly doesn't get shot down and gets to fight alongside Trigger

* Some of the named Aces show up (pulled from an excellent mod on Nexus that created actual assault records for the enemy aces from 7; the Su-47 from Cape Rainy, an EASA test pilot; the F/A-18 from Faceless Soldier; now an EASA field coordinator for a whole Hornet/Flanker drone squadron, has a Copro unit as a backseater like Mihaly, named "Copine"; the MiG-21 ace from the first mission returns to head a squadron that all use Su-35s, except for him: Silber vibes); the Mirage ace from Stonehenge shows up as the leader of Erusea's demonstration team that got swept up into actual combat; the Su-35 ace from the night Anchorhead mission is retconned into a Conservative ex-noble who stays alive.

* Many named squadrons survive/get reconstituted as they would in actual wartime.

* Yellow Squadron is here! Yellow 4 didn't act dumb and stayed behind after getting guerilla-bombed in AC04, so she leads the Yellows now. She and Mobius got along so well after the war that they got married. Her name is Algerian-based and her callsign is the French word for "catgirl" bc some Yellow 13 concept art had a catgirl on his flight jacket.

* Rosa gets Royal Guards now, some flying F-15EX and some flying X-02S. They are very competent, despite their ceremonial functions and fancy white-and-orange Erusean rose paintjobs.

* An Erusean intelligence/internal security squadron called "Polonium" works with the LRSSG in taking out the Alicorn

* The Alicorn has an anti-mutiny occur during the events of SP03, and doesn't get sunk, goes on to form a naval dream with the Marigold and the Eminent Domain. Torres gets to rant about "crisp white sheets" in a jail cell.

* The Erusean cowboy F-4 pilots from SP01 get to stick around since they weren't TGTs in that mission, and they were fun as hell

* The one poor MiG-31 with all the "mechanical issues" from SP01 and SP02 ends up leading the squadron by virtue of being the only one still alive, which may or may not be one of the squadrons that did the Erusean side of the satellite oopsie via ASAT missiles (like the MiG-31 can carry IRL)

* Nuclear ordnance is considered as a backup to Stonehenge in taking out the Arsenal Birds. Luckily Railgun Mommy McOnie gets Stonehenge working as in canon (and without randomly using civilians as surveyors)

* Lots of countries represented in an actual multinational IUN set up! Yukes! Belkans! Ustio! Emmeria! Estovakia! Cascadia! The Federation!

Do we really know for sure Eivor never went back to England? I'm choosing to believe she realized how stupid it was to leave and went back to Ravensthorpe, and at her very old age traveled WITH Randvi and died in Vinland. I just cannot accept the ending Ubisoft is giving us.

So, Darby said in an AMA she spent the rest of her life meditating on her Isu memories to see past the mythological veil and lived among the First Nation. He also said she went to the temple in Vinland, he just couldn’t show it in Valhalla for dev reasons. It was all a setup for Mirage as Basim will undoubtedly go to the Temple, and he wanted to ensure Eivor had increased significance in AC lore via her Isu past by retconning the entire base game ending. 🙄

He did NOT say she never went back to England, so there is always a possibility. And she DID say “for now” to Valka, not forever….but he certainly gave every indication she didn’t go back in the AMA responses. He also said Randvi became jarl. So I’m not sure she’d leave her people like Eivor did. And at that point, I’m not sure she wouldn’t be so angry with Eivor she’d even want to go. 🙃😢

The ending was absolutely awful. I don’t think anyone accepts it other than people who care more about AC lore than a consistent, compelling story. This is what happens when you care more about fan service to the wrong group of fans in your fandom than the people that paid any amount of attention to the plot of what you originally wrote.

But hey, again, he did NOT say she never went back and there was a slight opening for it based on what Eivor said, so you can absolutely headcanon that. Someone buried her like a Viking, with things they knew she cared about like her letterbox. I would say you have just enough reason to say she went back.

A/N: Happy New Year, everyone :) I finished writing this while I was recovering from a hangover, so hopefully it doesn't feel too rushed. I realized halfway through the story that the fanfic might be getting too long, so I've decided to cut it into smaller chapters. Hope that's okay!

Many years ago, before you were tasked with traveling around the world and spreading the word of the Hidden Ones, you and Basim were attached at the hip.

It was bound to happen. Two young novices, both taken under the wing of the assassins at a relatively young age and bearing a relentless thirst to prove the world what they were made of. Your personalities clashed at first; training under the same tutor would prove to be a disaster. Thus, for the sake of balance, you were mentored by Rayhan’s teachings whereas Basim was trained by Roshan.

You took training seriously – not that Basim didn’t, but it wasn’t in your nature to indulge in large gatherings at night. Roshan was just like you in that regard; but you were not her ward, and your actual mentor had different plans in mind for you. Instead of retreating to your tent by sunset, Rayhan urged you to join the bonfire of rowdy novices. It is there that you come to know Basim properly, and like the fire that crackles every night, a spark ignites between the two of you.

It starts off small – you spar together, wooden swords in hand as you dance around each other; but then training escalates into gifts and spending time together at night, long after your peers have fallen into a deep slumber. You undergo the ceremony together, showing off your hidden blades and new robes to each other. Basim jokes that you have to put these things to use, and suggests patrolling together from time to time; but even once your duty is over, you come to rest together by the bonfire once more. For you, it’s a sacred ritual. A time for the both of you to bask in the silence of the night and just exist. He tells you stories of his childhood as he pokes at the embers, whispers about the stars in the sky, the world he’s always wished to travel and see with his own eyes; words meant for you alone. During one of those nights, comforted by the warmth and light cast by the fire, you share your first kiss. It’s gentle, inviting, and safe – there is no rush, and no words are exchanged for the rest of the night; but you figure he has no regrets from the giddy grin that adorns his face, and the longing glances he sends your way the next morning.

Basim is a bit cheeky by nature, you’re aware of this. Wherever you go, his hands follow, and if your duties keep you apart for far too long, he comes to whisk you away. That kiss by the bonfire turns into two, then three, and then you lose count. He steals kisses from you when others aren’t looking, brushes his hand against yours when you walk past; and like a spell a witch has cast on you, you start seeking him out too. Basim notices, and he can’t help but smirk everytime you linger close to him. It warms his heart, really; and the feeling only intensifies when you both learn you’re being sent to Baghdad to dismantle the order of the Ancient Ones together.

Baghdad gives you mixed feelings to this day. You know the man has been plagued by nightmares in his past, but neither of you are expecting them to return and throw him off balance the way they have. He struggles to sleep, and you start to worry when he talks to himself or thrashes around at night.

He never quite speaks of what he sees. He claims he doesn’t understand it himself, even after so long, and continuously apologizes for waking you up. You tell him you don’t care about being woken up, relishing the warmth of his hand which clings to yours for comfort, and you’re awarded with a squeeze. The assassin’s headquarters are a safe haven for you, and Basim releases a relieved sigh before pressing his lips against yours. This kiss pales in comparison to all the other ones back in Alamut – they were fleeting, teasing even, whereas this one is slow and drawn out. It grounds you both in the reality that you’re there for each other. This kiss is here to stay, and so are you.

The air grows hotter when he closes the distance, and your hands begin to explore each other’s skin. He swallows your sounds, bodies intertwined as you roll onto the bed; and you spend the night tangled in each other’s limbs, sheets coiling around the both of you and squeezing you together like a snake of love.

Baghdad was supposed to be a new chapter for you after that night, but fate had other plans. Basim becomes torn, a beautiful rose hurt by its own thorns; a flower to be admired from a distance, but not touched. He doesn’t shut you out, not really, but you can tell his mind is elsewhere everytime he comes back from a mission. Although he struggles, he speaks of what he’s learnt regarding the order and his visions; and the irony twists your heart when you realize that despite the amount of clues he’s discovering, Basim feels more at a loss than ever.

It all changes when Alamut is attacked. Fuladh shoves a satchel bag into your hands when you are summoned to the bureau, ordering you to protect the few books the Hidden Ones hold sacred – and run. Far, far from the ambushed camp you were built upon, and into unknown territory. Find the other Hidden Ones, convince outsiders to join – anything to help your people’s cause and creed, if they were to be completely slaughtered in this battle.

You want to ask him where Basim is, but time is ticking. Fuladh hops onto his horse and rides East, towards Alamut. The bureau is now vacant, and even if the people of Baghdad continue to go about at a leisurely pace, you know there is a war raging next door, painting the dunes and mountains in crimson red. If you do not leave right away, the order will find you.

But the pounding in your heart tells you you can’t leave just yet. You scale up the buildings, leaping from roof to roof even when your muscles throb in pain, pushing yourself to check all the spots you know he visits. The House of Wisdom, the garden, the Bazaar. But you find Basim nowhere, and the revelation constricts your throat. For whatever reason, he is no longer in Baghdad; and if he is on his way to Alamut, then your lives part here. You are needed elsewhere, now. Going to Alamut would ensure the extinction of the creed.

And so, with a heavy heart, you turn away from the one place you’d called home over the years, and steal a horse for your escape.

Once the dust settles and you two get a chance to talk, it’s more of addressing and soothing the fears Arno has from his life. He adores and loves you so much, and his heart couldn’t take it if you were gone.

listen I’m gonna pretend it’s the ask meme because YES I am down bad and I want to talkramble about him

However I don’t pay much attention to the lore and I trust myself so little I actually made an entire Apex AU where I can say the Legends do anything because the game is populated by androids, so I’m gonna do the ask meme based on an ✨android✨ I made of Seer I like so in case any of my takes are stinky it’s not, Him him. You get it right. I’ve had a bad day,

so anyway A: realistic headcanon, Nines (he has the Aces High skin my beloved) is very attentive. He notices minuscule changes in your heartbeat and uses that to gauge how you’re feeling and how he should proceed; in his relationships, he is very understanding and patient.

This also applies to situational awareness? It’s hard to catch Nines off-guard (looking at you, Rev, get down from the ceiling) and, I know his tactical gets bamboozled by Mirage’s kit but the Ult does make decoy footsteps White instead of yellow and I love the idea of Seer always winning the “cup game”.

B: not realistic but funny, Seer doesn’t take his hat off. Like ever. This is technically a distinction between Nines and Seer, as Nines will take his hat off at the dining table/during a meal but Seer will not. Simplest reason why is that he doesn’t want someone *cough*Octane*cough* to take it, or perhaps it fits into the whole Outcast thing, you know? Either way, thing is glued to his head.

C: heart-crushing and awful! I’m really not sure what to say here. Sometimes with characters I’ll add a little trauma, you know, for projection or Flavor, but Something about Seer makes that difficult. Maybe because I can’t imagine much bothering him? With Nines, his biggest problem might come from a potential relationship, where his patience backfires; if his love isn’t ready for a relationship yet, he will wait for them, no matter how long it takes for them to be ready. I can imagine that would lead to loneliness.

With Seer himself, of course, you could argue the whole “being an outcast”/“being called cursed” thing hurts more than he lets off, and silently he constantly feels like an outsider amongst his peers, unable to truly relate to anyone... whiiich is where the ~projection~ comes in.

D: unrealistic! Literally all of my headcanons about the Legends fit into this one. Maybe? It’s subjective. The most unrealistic thing about Nines in particular is how Aggressive he can be. Part of this is based off of my play-style, where I’m trying to keep up with my friends that like to push, and I’m less Ambushing and more Hauling ass to delete someone with a Spitfire. In the AU, this translates to Nines being Very ready to quickdraw with his Wingman and threaten your life, Provided you’ve threatened his friends first.

I’m not sure if I see Seer himself as being aggressive or, possessive. My friend and I have played around with the idea that, if someone he liked were to interact with others, he would Stare as a way to express jealousy. Probably Unrealistic, though.

First I don’t like Basim/Hytham as a ship. I think it’s abusive and bad but it’s the other issue with the ship that I want to talk about. And it’s not even really about the ship, it’s more about Basim in general and a trend I’ve seen a lot of online. This isn’t an attack on anyone that ships those characters, ship them if you want, I’m more the sort of “if I don’t like it I scroll on” sort of person. But there is a good bit of people who ship those characters and there’s just something I’ve noticed about them, their headcanons for the ship, and it extends to really most fans of Basim and their view of the character. It’s all not based in canon.

There’s this thing with Basim where for some reason people ignore canon about him, make up random things and actions they ascribe to him, and none of it is supported by anything in Valhalla, or Golden City(I’ll get to mirage later). Like fans of him for the ship, really most ships with him, or just fans in general of the character either straight up make up things and interactions that are out of character for Basim and then treat them as canon or they ignore half of actual canon and context to view the character as a super nice and sentimental character. He isn’t and he never has been in canon.

Really this ignoring of canon is only an issue when it comes to Basim because of Mirage where the character seems to have no connection to the one from Valhalla and was just chosen because of fans liking Basim, even if a lot of the positive reaction was just character design. So everything from that game seems like it’s about a completely different character, maybe more in line with fan headcanons but not Valhalla or Golden City canon, that’s just named Basim as well. It makes it feel more like a completely different character was made and his name was just changed to Basim to try to pray on fans who thought Basim was cool just from looks.

And observing this disconnect between fan interpretation and canon evidence just got me thinking about just fandom in general. It feels like there has been an increase in this view that canon just doesn’t matter. And don’t get me wrong, I like a good AU or reimagining or characters, but those are always in the context of them still being very rooted in examining the actual canon, not ignoring it. But the recent trend has basically been that canon is irrelevant which has made fandom honestly a bit more annoying. Like if a person likes a character in a book, movie, or game they’d hope searching for content would provide content of that character that is canon accurate if it’s not marked as an AU. But instead there has been basically a wash of people completely changing the personalities of characters, treating their headcanons as canon, and it makes me ask a question. Why not find a character that’s actually like that instead of changing a character? Why not find a good man who is a bit mysterious but has a soft heart and cares deeply for others? Why change a cold and calculating man who repeatedly manipulated and abilities those around him? Like there’s nothing wrong with liking dark of villainous characters, but if you’re not looking for a dark and villainous character why not find what you’re actually looking for?

I suppose the reason why this is something that eats at me is that I’ve seen this fan rewriting of characters ruin a series I loved. Halo. And I’m worried about it ruining other franchises I love. AC in particular already has the issue of players liking Ezio so the series acts like he’s the greatest assassin to ever exist and the games changing their format to try to pander to the worst of fans, the nostalgia only fans, they’re just walking down a familiar path which I’ve noticed more series following. This is arguably also an issue for movies and tv. They also are chasing nostalgia and what people think they remember old shows being like. Hell arguably the worst bits of the later seasons of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic we’re because it was pandering to the briny community rather than just making the show what it was at the start.

It’s just troubling and confusing. Why do people not seek out the characters they’re actually interested in? Why do they change others so much? Is it all because the Onceler fell out of fashion?

And to be clear I like Basim. I like him for the manipulative and abusive ass hole he was through all of Golden City. I like him for his ability to not give a shit about the people around him and have his own motivations like in Valhalla. I like that he’s a character you’re torn between trusting and being wary of in the game and when the turn comes you look back and see truly how you should have noticed how much he was manipulating him. And maybe that’s why I’m frustrated. Because so many who seem to like him don’t want that Basim. They want a completely different character. It feels like it makes it harder to make connections. If you like a character for canon and another likes them for the headcanons they’ve made up you don’t actually have an interest in common.
