You and Jungkook had been together since early 2019 after meeting at the BBMA’s. It was both your first times at an American awards show, so you naturally felt a little out of place. Recently, Jungkook had been in talks to collaborate with other artists from America in preparation for the release of his first solo album, and when he bought up the idea of the two of you also doing a song together, it caused you to hit your breaking point.

‘What do you mean, no?’ He’d cornered you in his dance studio during a break. All the backing dancers had gone out so it was just the two of you left in the room.

Visual Effects in Only Friends MV part 2

The second song on the Only Friends OST dropped today; So What? by the amazing Ford Arun. Much like the first MV for Only Friends, this one is also has visual frameworks that made me stop and stare.

Just like my first post on this subject, where I talked about the late 90s/early 00s aesthetic of the show as well as controlled voyeurism (aka we only see what they want us to see), these themes show up again here, but a little differently. Unlike the Let's Try MV and the BTS vids which use multiple different effects and transitions as well as framing a lot of the scenes to look like (possibly) 90s camcorder footage, So What? has two visual effects (I think technically three, and I'll point out why I say it this way in a minute).

The first one is the camcorder footage effect. Except that it's even different from the Let's Try MV. While the Let's Try MV has the "play" prompt onscreen and time stamps, it now, to me, feels more like CCTV video than camcorder video. The video effect on So What? is definitely camcorder footage because it is time and date stamped.

Now, the time and date stamp is February 1st, 2020 at 6:06pm for every screen it appears on, which to me cannot be an accurate date/time for any of the scenes. Several of these scenes were from episodes 4, 5, 6, or potentially yet to air. Chuem drops info about Covid in episode one and in February of 2020, we were so early into the pandemic during that time that I'm not sure she would have referred to it so casually, plus with no Covid precautions being taken onscreen it does feel the show is set currently (aka 2023).

Why this date? Why 6:06pm? WHAT IS JOJO TRYING TO SAY HERE? Is this a specific reference to something upcoming on the show? Is this date famous in Thailand for something? Did he just pull a date and time out of a hat?

Onto the second effect: the yellow text on the screen is back! It was heavily used as a visual effect in episode one, and after a discussion with @ignoranaxed I did add it to my Narrative Frameworks post where I'm tracking visual effects on the show. We discussed whether or not this was an homage or reference to SKAM Norway, an extremely popular coming of age teen drama that had an amazingly done queer season (Season three. If nothing else, stop what you're doing and go watch SKAM Norway season three. You can thank me later). The show was so popular it has been remade in Spain, Italy, France, Germany (named Druck), Belgium (named WtFock), the United States and has even been announced as a Korean (BL?) drama for next year.

Is this an actual homage? I came down on the side of maybe. I can't swear it is, but I can't say it isn't. That yellow text on the screen is iconic due to SKAM Norway, and it is used in every single remake of the show (if Korea doesn't use it, I will cry. Also, if Korea doesn't release/air it in the same way, I will cry). Leaving that aside, the yellow text is in Thai, and as yet, I have no idea what it says because my subs only translated the song lyrics, not the onscreen words. If anyone who knows Thai can help me with this, I would love you forever because there's one other thing that shows up in yellow on the screen, and it's this:

WHY AN ELLIPSES, JOJO? WHAT DID IT SAY BEFORE THIS? I NEED TO KNOW WHY IT'S TRAILING OFF. IS IT TO BE CONTINUED? THE NOT KNOWING WILL DRIVE ME INSANE.

Onto the third , but maybe not really an effect: Is Ford photoshopped in here?

I ask this because if he is (and I can't quite tell but I think maybe?) then does that mean this is future footage coming up on the show? Or, like Let's Try MV did with it's extra SandRay footage in the car, was this just shot for the MV? I'm curious to see what people think on this.

Now for the rest of the MV where I just melt down because WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS DRAMA BETWEEN YO AND PLUG, JOJO? YOU CAN'T DO THIS. Also, is this Sand hugging Yo?

You can't do this to my girl. This will hurt.

Do we think this is Boston and Nick potentially going ice skating or roller skating? Because if it's roller skating, JOJO I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER.

things from 230405 7dream newark concert so i don’t forget

- during their butt bump choreo mark and haechan kinda missed each other so they looked at each other and haechan especially was trying not to laugh

- haechan read a sign “mark aegyo please” and mark was kinda flustered but was like okay fine and asked “ok but do you guys actually even like this??” and everyone screamed “yes” so he did aegyo and haechan was laughing

- someone gave haechan a glove for the encore and he did a mj impression

- chenle was great at interacting with the crowd and at the end he was so busy waving at the crowd he had to sprint to catch the final bow and renjun gave him such a judgemental look lmao

- jaemin memorized impressively long ments in english but he kept forgetting so he had to pause and try to remember

- all the dreamies gave their ments in at least partial english, jaemin chenle renjun and ofc mark especially

- whenever the dreamies spoke english mark would be nodding along it was SO cute

- before the iconic chenji part in candy jisung was staring at chenle in distrust bc chenle has burned him too many times doing it with mark lmao but haechan ended up jumping in front of them for the part 💀

- mark i think hugged renjun and spun him around 🥺

- haechan hugged mark but he was standing in an awkward position so mark playfully knocked him to the ground and sprinted away it was super cute

- during one of the songs jisung was carrying haechan on his back

- during candy the part where haechan and jaemin look at each other haechan kept stroking jaemin’s chest and jaemin kept pushing him off it was super funny

- jeno did some crazy ass not quite backflip (but sort of??)RIGHT in front of me it was INSANE like how did he do that holy shit???

- this is me being delusional but i swear i made eye contact with renjun at least once and i think maybe with haechan too 🥺

- mark’s ending ment was super sweet he talked about how he loved the diversity in the crowd and he shouted out korean americans and talked about being reminded of his time in canada

- the crowd barked multiple times but ONLY for mark lmao

- lots of screams for all 7 dreamies 🫶🏻

- haechan made us say “aigo” twice for his goodbye and then yelled “yo dream” so we got to do the chant for him 🥺

- renjun and mark performed quiet down pretty close to us it was crazy

- trigger the fever is a great concert song and jeno and performed RIGHT in front of us i have such a good video of it i’ll try to figure out how to post it later

- someone in front of me handed haechan these huge green heart glasses so he leaned down to get them so he was SUPER close omg

- at one point haechan started doing that thing he does where he taps his fingers like he’s playing the piano i have a video i’ll try to post

re: the LA adaptation + anime

heard on the grapevine that there could potentially be an animated adaptation announcement next year (at least, that's what the author had teased + kr fandom had speculated). naver webtoon seems to be going through an expansion recently by acquiring a few local animation studios so that in addition to studio lico (the studio in charge of the hsgh manhwa and main animation studio for alien stage)'s own in-house animation department, it's also super likely that the possible anime would be locally made! (unlike solo-leveling, which was being done by A-1 pictures)

an LA adaptation doesn't seem to be something that might happen any time soon (and given the orv kr and intl fandom's reaction to the live action orv movie casting, it doesn't seem too hopeful really!) + the whole potential discourse that follows with having a korean drama of a (technically) chinese-setting work, even if the og work is korean... best avoid that can of worms for now!

(though for me personally my fancast for a live action jo gul is ok taecyeon from 2pm LOL he was literally the first person that came to my mind when i first started reading the manhwa. they just look so alike it's crazy)

OHHH IS THAT SO...i swear i remember seeing fans speculating on an upcoming anime based off some things that were mentioned by the studio lico rotmhs team in an interview not that long ago so i definitely know that an anime is on the table, though when it will be announced and released... who knows..its only a matter of time..... i also noticed the acquirement of animation studios what with all the amv osts theyve been pumping out lately ..every time a new one drops ive been just rubbing my hands knowing that anime announcement is on the horizon and yeasss im definitely rooting for a locally done animated series cuz what they did w solo leveling was so sick oh my god i genuinely dont even want to think about it⬆️⬆️⬆️

i was never too hopeful for a live action, ive never really been into them in the first place tbh and ur right about the discourse surrounding it, it just sounds like too much trouble to even consider it at the moment.... the way yallre listing these fully grown adult actors for some of these characters who're jsut supposed to be younger teenagers in debut is making me giggle a little tho.. looked up ok taecyeon and imagining that guy pretending to be 17 yo baby faced s1 jo gul just made me laugh out loud.. ikwym though i suppose i can see it also

Alright, so first thing when I get home I am taking a long bath and catching up on the fic I’ve been reading. After that, ordering in noodles. Then, gaming, finally. Maybe I can find a pickup raid—

“Yo, Mina, you coming?”

Mina looked up at one of the guys from her class. “What?”

“Wow, you weren’t even listening, were you? We’re going out for drinks, you coming?”

“Oh, no, sorry, I have obligations tonight, and…”

“Fine, whatever. Can’t even fucking be bothered even after finals.” He grumbled and stalked off.

Mina was just glad that he wasn’t going to push it. She didn’t have obligations, she just knew that group were infamous for drinking too much and making “poor life choices”. She finished bundling up her laptop cord and got the last of her things in her backpack.

“Excuse me, Miss Cha?” Mina looked up and her professor was standing there addressing her.

“Yes, Professor Richards, what do you need?”

“Can you drop this phone off at student services? Someone forgot it, and we’re the last final in here for the semester.”

“Oh, I...” Wait, why the fuck can’t you do it?

“Please.” He wasn’t asking.

“Yeah, fine, whatever.” Mina tucked the phone in her pocket, and lamented the loss of her gaming time, but she knew better than to argue with her professors. It wasn’t out of politeness, just that the CSci professors here were notorious for knocking students’ grades for almost no reason at all. And she wasn’t about to go another entire semester into debt because she refused to handle a lost phone. She was done with college.

Of course, Student Services was closed by the time she arrived. Of Course. And because she’d taken custody of the phone, it was now her responsibility. Mina poked the power button on the phone to see if it had any juice, see if she could call someone from it. No response. Fucking…… fine. Fine. It’s fine. I’ll just plug it in when I get home.

Mina stood staring at the door to her shared apartment, shaking.

[EVICTION NOTICE: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, 24 HOURS TO VACATE]

What the actual fuck.

She took a picture of the notice on their door, and sent it to her roommates, stomping into the apartment and looking around. First some forgetful little shit’s phone and now this?! Why??

[[[HouseChat]]] Mina: What is up with this? Emily: WHAT IS THAT?! Mina: Apparently we haven’t been paying rent. We have until noon tomorrow. Emily: I just finished my last final. Emily: Where the hell is Garret? Mina: No idea. Emily: He’s leaving us on read. Emily: Garret, I hope you’re busy paying off our back rent right now you son of a bitch. Mina: Doubt it, his room’s empty. Emily: Mina… I will handle this. I mean, my father will handle this. Emily: We’ll have to get out ASAP, but I should be able to chase the asshole down for our money. [[[]]]

Mina practically flew into her room, and plugged all of her devices in, including the one that wasn’t even hers. If she was going to be homeless, she was going to be homeless with full fucking batteries.

For once in her life, Mina was glad she hadn’t had the disposable income to buy things, and had instead gotten a fully furnished apartment. It meant that now, at the end of her college career, everything she owned fit in her backpack and a rolling suitcase. A big one, sure, but… just one. Mina had considered staying in the apartment one last night, but then Emily noticed that their keys no longer worked in the locks, and that dream popped like an oily bubble. No thanks.

And that was how Mina found herself at the little Korean restaurant in the nowheresville between campus and downtown, tucked at a table by the window, eating Tteokbokki. She looked up when the owner came up and sat down across from her, her brain shifting gears as she realized the woman was speaking to her in Korean.

<Are you going on a trip, Mi-na?> she asked, eyeing the suitcase.

<No. I got evicted because my roommate took the money instead of paying the rent.> Mina said around a bite of food.

<Let me check with my friends, if they can’t take me, I’ll let you know.> Mina knew better than to take Mrs. Gye up on her hospitality. She and her husband barely kept this place afloat when classes weren’t in session.

<Okay. You eat up, I’ll bring you some dessert.>

While she continued eating her dinner, Mina powered on the stray cellphone. Much to her surprise, there was no SIM card in the thing. Just a single image saved in the gallery - an address and a weird little code.

A few taps on her own phone showed Mina that the address in question led to a 14th floor apartment of one of the swanky downtown apartment buildings. Good. After dinner she could go drop this phone off.

Mina stood staring at the door in front of her. She’d knocked but gotten no response, and she’d be damned if she was going to leave this place without returning this phone. The lock on the door was one of those newfangled password locks, and Mina was suddenly reminded of the numbers under the address on the phone. Biting her lip, she tapped in the code and the door chimed, a green light flashing at her. Mina turned the handle and the door opened, revealing a neat (if slightly dusty) apartment.

“Hello?” She called, and in a fit of brattiness, also called out in Korean. <Hello?>

No response. Of fucking course.

Mina walked in and shut the door behind her, and set the phone on the empty desk, opening her backpack to get a piece of notepaper. Best to just leave a note and head out again, she still needed to find a place to crash tonight. As she was digging through her bag, the phone on the desk started to vibrate aggressively, which was downright terrifying given that it didn’t have a SIM card and couldn’t receive or send any kind of message without connecting to something.

Unknown: Thank you for returning the phone! Unknown: Your assistance in this matter is very important. Unknown: I hope your written Korean is as lovely as your speaking voice. Unknown: Enjoy your time there, the kitchen is even stocked just for you.

Another flash of weird movie-looking hacking garbage, and a new screen opened.

Mina looked at the phone and realized it had loaded some kind of chatroom, where people were merrily (and much too quickly for Mina to parse at speed) chatting in Korean.

Nope. I never gave that thing my name. NOPE.

Mina immediately grabbed her bags and went to leave, the phone still on the desk, but the door was locked, and the deadbolt spun uselessly when she tried to turn it.

Are you fucking kidding me, now I’m trapped in this apartment where no one knows where I am AND there’s a creepy chat in Korean that knows my name?! And some unknown motherfucker ‘stocked the kitchen for me’? With what, corpses? Nope. No way. Fuck, this is the last time I just help someone out of the goodness of my goddamn heart.

Mina tried to close the program and get the address and code back up so she could have someone come get her out. She considered the police for half a second before she realized they’d just charge her with some illegal entry bullshit and she wasn’t into that. So… Emily to the rescue, right?

The image with the address and the code was gone. The code had like 14 digits, there was no way she could just dredge that out of her memory.

Fuck. I’m really trapped here.

Mina pulled out her personal phone and stared at it. No signal. Not even a drop of 1g. How? She was in a tall building in the middle of downtown. Is this whole fucking apartment a Faraday cage?! Maybe I can get some wifi… That thought, too, was shot down when she realized that while there was a wifi network, it was locked down by mac-address.

About that time, Mina realized there was a chatroom going on and she could maybe get them to help her out. Why didn’t I study Korean properly? Speaking it does me no good when it’s going by at a mile a damn minute as text.

Mina stared at the screen, catching bits and pieces of what they were saying, and it was clear when they noticed she was there.

<;Mina: Who are you people?> <Yoosung★: That’s what we’d like to ask you!>

More rapid-fire questions came in, all asking the same thing that she didn’t know how to answer. Mina was terrified. She was 14 floors up, there was no climbing out a window. This luxury-style apartment didn’t even have a balcony.

<707: Hold on, I’m getting their location> <;Mina: Please do.> <707: Hey, how’d you get inside Rika’s Apartment?!> <707: Are you a hacker?!> <707: THERE’S NO WAY YOU BROKE THROUGH THE SYSTEM WHILE I WAS HERE!!>

Mina struggled through the next few lines of chat. Something about fans? Ugh. Confusing. Mom is probably rolling in her grave right now with disappointment.

<;Mina: None of that is true.> <;Mina: I am just here to return this lost phone.>

Another pile of messages came in so fast that Mina got lost trying to keep up with them, but then saw her name, and focused on that.

<707: Mina, can I call you?> <707: I know the number to that phone…> <707: I think it will be easier to understand each other over the phone.> <Mina: Yes. Please. I agree.> <707: Everyone, please excuse us.> <707: Defender of Justice Seven Zero Seven is on the case.>

Mina closed the chatroom, and then the phone in her hand rang.

<Hello, is this Mina?> The voice on the other end of the line asked, and Mina was enthralled. He sounded like fun, even thought it was obvious he was trying to be serious. <Yes, that’s me.> Mina said, smiling despite her current anxiety level. <Why are you in Rika’s apartment?> <I’m sorry. I don’t even know who Rika is. It’s a long s-story.> Mina cursed her own stuttering, under her breath, aloud, in English. She always cursed in English, her parents were very polite people, so she didn’t curse in Korean… she didn’t know how.

<Ooh, English swears. If I ever thought you weren’t actually in Rika’s apartment, now I’m sure.> <You know I’m not..>

Mina sighed, but told him about getting saddled with the phone, and then powering it on and it leading her here.

<But you don’t sound that gullible. Why go where the phone said?> 707 asked her.

And, as though she were talking to a therapist, Mina explained about getting evicted and having nowhere to go and thus being less cautious than she otherwise would. Why am I telling him any of this shit?

<So, leave then. I mean, I’m not kicking you out, whatever, but… you really shouldn’t stay there.> He said. <707, I… there’s more going on here.> <Just call me Seven.> <Okay, Seven. I… I can’t leave. I’m locked in.> <WHAT?!> <Yeah. And the door code erased itself from the phone so I can’t even have anyone else come get me out, either.> <OH. Don’t… please… don’t tell anyone where you are. For your own safety. And theirs. Please. Pretty please.> He was practically begging. <Why?> Mina asked, coldly. Seven said, and Mina scoffed. <No, I mean… I want you to be safe.> <You don’t know me.> Mina said, coldly. Seven said. <That’s just common decency.> <Okay, but it’s fucking terrifying. I don’t even know why I’m saying this to you. You could be Unknown for all I know.> <What’s this about an unknown?> <Someone messaged me, name Unknown. Said things like they liked my speaking voice and that they stocked the kitchen for me.> <Oh. That. That is creepy as fuck. I’m not that.> <Listen. I know it’s frightening. Hell, I’m nervous and I’m not in your shoes right now. But try to stay calm, okay? I’ll figure this out.> <I… I know it’s probably early there still but I’m getting tired. Will I… will I be safe if I sleep here?> <You should be. But, for transparency, there are cameras all over that apartment. Only place they won’t show is the bathroom, so if you change, do it there.> <Fat chance of that.> she muttered. <Mm, legit. And I know I’ve given you no reason to trust me yet, but I’ll be watching the cameras just in case, okay?> <Honestly… you’re not wrong that I can’t trust you, but is it weird that I’m calmed a little knowing that?> <Nah, it just means if anything does happen, someone will know to look for you.> <Thanks, Seven.> Mina said, sighing. <Get some rest. It’s only lunchtime here, I’ve got all the time in the world to figure this shit out.>

Mina woke into the eerily silent apartment. Waking meant she’d slept, which she honestly hadn’t meant to do, but nothing changed. A quick glance at her wrist showed her that it was about 5am. She got off the couch, and walked carefully into the kitchen, and checked the refrigerator and pantry. Sure enough, there was food. But not a lot. Probably enough to last a week, ten days if she stretched it. Fuck. Am I going to die here? She took out one of the ‘instant breakfast essentials’ packets and dumped it in a glass with milk. Milk was a whole food and with the weird-ass vitamins they put in these packets, it should keep her going for awhile. She wanted to start with the more perishable foods and see just how far she could stretch things.

Sitting on the couch sipping her breakfast, the phone buzzed, denoting an incoming message. Like all messages from Unknown, these were in English.

Unknown: You should get them to let you help host another party. Unknown: Don’t you want to do a good job, pet?

Pet?! Mina shuddered, and stared at the phone. Whoever Unknown was… she wasn’t a fan.

Mina: They don’t trust me. Unknown: Then I guess you had better try harder. Unknown: If you want to make it out of that apartment, that is…

Mina set her phone down and looked dead into one of the cameras. What time is it in Korea when it’s 5am here? Like… evening? right? late evening?

Her phone buzzed twice, and she bit her lip before looking back down at it.

Unknown: Looking into the camera won’t save you, pet. Get to work. 707: Are you okay? You look less than okay.

Fuck. This. Noise. Mina had to stop herself from throwing the phone against a wall. She needed to at least pretend to do what this Unknown wanted.

She opened the chat, and stared at it until someone said something.

Mina blinked. Was it going to be this easy? Were these real people? 707 had seemed real enough, but was it possible she’d been talking to an AI instead of a person? Her Korean wasn’t perfect, after all…

<;Mina: I was told to host a party.> <Jumin Han: Sounds like you’ve heard that from someone.> <707: Eh, party? The party’s ur purpose?>

Mina set her phone on the desk in front of her and again looked dead-eyed into the camera she liked to stare into. She hoped that the people on the other side of that camera - 707 and probably Unknown - got their own answers from her stare.

The chat continued, more and more suspicious of her. The chances they were actually going to let her help plan a party were slim, but… she just wanted to survive, okay?

<;Mina: Am I going to be blocked? I’m here because someone called Rika sent me!>

Mina looked at the message that appeared on the chatroom, taking a moment to read and understand the message. She hadn’t typed that. She hadn’t even picked up her phone. I don’t think I would have been able to assemble that sentence myself, for fuck’s sake.

She looked down at the chat and back up at the camera, and walked over to the door, checking one more time to see if it would open. Maybe she was hallucinating this whole thing. Maybe it was a nightmare.

Of course it’s still locked. Mina thought, and kicked the door in her irritation. She stalked back over to her phone and realized the conversation had gone on without her. And of course they were talking about what kind of a person she was.

<;Mina: I’m not a shady person.> <Jumin Han: Even so, there is no proof to prove your innocence at this stage.> <Zen: Umm.. I don’t think Mina is a bad person.> <707: The situation is fishy, but I think Mina is just caught up in it.> <Jaehee Kang: Even so, Mina’s situation is quite perplexing. Is it okay for a non-member to take Rika’s place?>

Who the fuck is Rika?! Mina thought, unconsciously fidgeting with the cuffs of her sleeves. She couldn’t even ask them because ‘she’ had said Rika sent her. Maybe if she left the chatroom she could ask Unknown..

<;V: I’m thinking of accepting Mina as a new member of RFA, if Mina agrees.> <;Jaehee Kang: It seems a bit abrupt…> <Jumin Han: I agree. Accepting a stranger as a new member…?>

Mina wanted to tell them where they could shove their organization membership, but she knew that doing that would sign her death warrant.

<;Mina: Does it cost? I’m poor.> She’d wanted to tell them she was a broke college student but she couldn’t figure out how to put that together. Shit. This lack of vocab is going to be the death of me. Literally. <V: Not at all. It’s not that… kind… of organization.>

Most of what everyone else said flew by too fast for her to read it before they were asking her another question.

<;V: So Luciel, I want you to keep searching for information about Mina.> <707: Um… Is it okay, Mina?>

The next thing she knew, her phone was ringing. Yoosung was calling her. Their chat was short and sweet - he hadn’t meant to call her, in fact he’d done it by accident while fumbling around after spilling hot tea on himself. At least he’s an adorable idiot. If they were all smart and competent it’d be scarier.

Not long after her call, her phone lit up with texts.

Unknown: Did you have a nice call with naive little Yoosung? Unknown: Don’t get too attached. Unknown: At the rate you’re going, you’ll never make it out of that apartment, let alone get to meet them.

Mina sipped at the broth that constituted her dinner, and scratched translation notes from the chatroom she’d just quasi-participated in. From what she could tell, her job was going to be answering emails from potential party guests to try and convince them to come to the party. Also the party date was… less than two weeks out? Seriously, V, you of all people know where I am and should by now know that my Korean reading/writing are shitty, why would you assume I could even do this job?!

But then she got to the line that explained basically everything.

<;V: It’s what Rika would have wanted.>

The days passed with no change. Eventually, Mina felt disgusting enough that she forced herself to take a shower in record time. As she sat on her usual spot on the sofa with her hair damp around her shoulders and her phone in hand, a new chat room lit up. She tapped into it, sighing.

<707: Mina!!!> <;Mina: Yes? Why? Is something wrong?> <707: I can’t explain in detail> <707: but you’re in danger right now> <707: From this second> <707: Don’t ever move from the apartment.> <Mina: Seven. I can’t do that anyway.> <707: I know, but… even if that door unlocks.> <Mina: What? I don’t understand. Call me?>

So far, Mina’s stress level had been high enough that she’d barely been eating anything, focusing on the most perishable food items first, just in case she’d be stuck here longer than the week whose end was fast approaching. Now, she was glad, because Seven’s messages this morning had thrown her into a panic, and all of the nothing she’d been eating was threatening to come right back up. Her phone rang, and she answered it instantly.

<H-hello?> <Thank god you picked up. Just stay there.> <On the couch?> <Yes, sure. Whatever. In the apartment.> <Seven, talk to me. I know I’m slow, but…> <The Security System got Hacked. I don’t know what the hell is going on… I knew something bad was going to happen. I should have come right away.> <Didn’t we know it got hacked since I’m locked in here?> <Yes. No. Both? There are two systems and the second one got hacked. Things are bad right now… God… Just don’t move and wait for me there.> <Alright.> <Regardless of what’s going on, I’ll make sure to protect you.> <Seven…> <I’m sorry. This is all because of me. I… I couldn’t be perfect. I got so distracted and I couldn’t do all the work…!> <Seven.> <Seven! Calm down! I’m fine, I’ll be fine until you get here.> <You have to be safe… you have to… please… Please don’t get hurt…!>

The phone cut out, probably due to being on a plane, and Mina sat there staring at it. The calm hacker who didn’t want her here was in a panic. Getting on a plane to come here. That meant she would be safe, right? If she.. if she lived that long? What could possibly have made him so afraid?

Mina was dozing on the sofa when her phone made the telltale chime of a new chatroom opening, and she peered at the screen owlishly.

<707: Mina…!> <;Mina: Seven! Are you chatting from space?>

I have to go. Mina, Be safe.> <707 has left the chatroom.> <Jaehee Kang: I was going to ask Luciel if he was alright, but he just left…> <Mina: I’m nervous. But a bit happy he’s coming here.> <Jaehee Kang: I’m glad you’re happy… but I’m getting more nervous by the fact that Seven himself is on the move. What in the world is the special security system… Why is he being so anxious…?>

Mina sighed, and tried to figure out what Jaehee was saying. The walls of text she left in the chatroom were harder to read than Mina was used to, and eventually she just logged out when Jaehee did.

I hope you get here soon, Seven.

Unknown: So you’ve managed to lure in that damn redhead, have you? Unknown: Good work. I’ll finally have my revenge. Unknown: Too bad you’ll never get to feel the wind on your face again.

What the actual fuck?

Mina: What do you mean? We’re going to hold your party! I did what you wanted! Unknown: Oh, but did you? It’s irrelevant. Unknown: The Savior says we don’t need someone like you in Magenta. Unknown: Goodbye, pet.

Mina heard a click, and looked up from the phone in horror. She could hear something, an odd ticking sound just at the edge of loud enough to hear. Then, she started hearing beeps at the front door.

<Mina? Are you in there?>

“Mina, answer me!”

That was Seven’s voice.

“Seven?! I’m here!!!”

“Get to the door, now!”

You don’t have to tell me twice! Mina thought, as she launched herself off the couch and towards the door, which swung in just as she reached it, and a hand caught her wrist, causing her to drop the phone.

“We need to run. He knows I’m here.”

“I dropped the phone.”

“Leave it.”

“But…!” All of my things are there, my passport, money… everything!

“Talk later. Run now.”

He pulled her down the hall towards the emergency stairs on the far side of the building. Somewhere along their mad flight, Mina’s sandals failed to stay on her feet. As they stepped into the stairwell, Seven reached out and pulled the fire alarm, just as a dull roar started to echo through the hallway.

Among the crowds pouring out of the building thanks to the alarm were a red-headed hacker and a painfully nondescript brunette. As Mina started to lag behind, Seven stopped and looked at her, realizing that she wasn’t wearing any shoes at this point.

“Lost your sandals in the mad dash?”

“How is your English so good?”

He winked at her, and then scooped her into his arms. “Lots of glass out here, don’t want you getting hurt.” was his only answer.

He deposited her in the back seat of a waiting car, and then slipped into the passenger seat. The man driving was wearing all black, his brown hair in a shaggy mullet, his face fixed in a clinically bored expression.

“Vanderwood, this is Mina.”

“Whatever.” The driver, Vanderwood?, said.

“Seven, what the fuck was that all about? Why did you pull the…” Mina’s question was cut off by a loud explosion as an apartment on the 14th floor of the building they had just occupied blew out in an explosion the likes of which she had only seen in movies. “Fuck.”

Mina sat curled up in a chair in the hotel room they’d brought her to. Despite her arguments, Vanderwood had efficiently and skillfully bandaged the small wounds on her feet. Next to her on the table was a half-eaten burrito bowl from some chain Mexican place. It wasn’t that she wasn’t hungry. She was ravenous from having rationed herself on what was in the apartment, but she knew if she bolted it she’d just be sick later.

Occupying her mind, however, was the fact that now she had nothing. Seven had said the bomb was designed to completely incinerate anything in the apartment, it was an evidence eradicating explosive. That guy really likes his alliterations. She thought, and sighed. Through some twist of fate, every single thing she owned had been in that apartment. Even her cell phone, though on a normal day it would have lived in her pocket. I haven’t had a normal day in… a long time. She thought, and bit back a sigh.

What am I supposed to do now that I don’t have a single scrap of identification?

While Mina’s existential crisis was ongoing, there was a knock at the door and then Seven returned, some plastic bags in hand, and Vanderwood looked up at him as if to ask what he’d been up to.

“How’s Mina?”

Vanderwood followed Seven’s gaze to where she sat, and startled visibly.

“Fuck, I forgot she was even here.”

“What? Haha, really?” Seven was overly amused by his partner’s unease. Seriously, Vanderwood? You’re literally here to keep an eye on me and you forgot I was here?! What the fuck.

“I was quiet.” she said, shrugging.

Seven mirrored her shrug.

“Anyway, I got you some clothes and a bag to keep them in.” He held them out, and she stood and grabbed them, making a beeline for the bathroom.

“How did you know my size?”

“I guessed, and erred on the size of bigger? I bought a belt too just in case I’m an idiot.”

“He’s an idiot.” Vanderwood chimed in.

Mina shut the bathroom door, effectively ending the conversation.

When she shut off the water, Mina realized that Seven and Vanderwood were having a conversation about her in the other room. She quietly eavesdropped while she picked through the clothes, which were actually basically the right size.

“You’re seriously planning to bring her back with us.”

“Yep.”

“Why?”

“Because she’s got literally nothing going for her here.”

“So you want to get her embroiled with the agency.”

“No. Just…”

“You know we can’t have relationships, Zero Seven.”

“It’s not like that! I figured she could help me with the RFA work, Maybe do some ghost-hacking for me if I’m overwhelmed. The Agency doesn’t need to know she exists.”

“And how do you propose to convince her of this plan?”

“Meh, I just figured I’d suggest it. I mean, she’s listening right now, anyway.” Seven said, and Mina chuckled. She’d just been leaning against the door waiting for the topic to shift away from her before she made her entrance, but there seemed to be no point now. She swung open the door, allowing the damp, steamy air to escape into the main room. Her glasses fogged up immediately.

“What’s this about taking me a place? I assure you, I bite.”

“Promise?” Vanderwood said with a smirk.

Seven shook his head violently, causing his glasses to fly off his face.

“No, not like, against your will. I just thought maybe… since you’re done with school and have literally nothing to your name, that I should help. But I’m not American, so…”

“Oh.” Mina said, realizing. “But it’s not your fault any of this happened. You saved my life. You flew halfway around the world and still made it in time. You owe me nothing, Seven.”

“What if I said I think you’re still in danger and the only way I can think of to protect you is to keep you close?” He slipped his retrieved glasses back on his face as punctuation to his statement.

“More convincing, but wouldn’t I be fine if I just, y’know, didn’t go someplace scary as shit next time?”

“I’d believe that, except you went the first time.” Vanderwood said, rolling his eyes.

“Hush it up, you.” Seven said, waving a hoodie sleeve in Vanderwood’s direction.

“Listen. Whatever was going on with that apartment and the push to host another party… that’s still an ongoing concern. And I can’t stay here and protect you. What about… a trip, then? Just come stay with me in Seoul for a couple months, until we’re sure it’s safe for you to just exist again.”

“I could do that… if I had my passport.”

“Oh, I could forge that easy.”

“But I have dual citizenship.” Mina said, sighing. “That’s not easily forgeable.”

“OH. That makes it EASIER.” Seven said, and Vanderwood nodded before slipping out the door.

“Where’s he going?”

“To get your replacement documents.” Seven said, waving away her concern.

“Now, let’s do something fun.” Seven said, waggling his eyebrows at her as he plopped down next to her on the bed.

“Now hold on just a minute—” Mina started, thinking she was going to need to fend off some unwanted advances, but was startled when

she realized he was handing her one of the controllers from his Switch.

“Mario Kart.” Seven said. “But don’t you dare steal Yoshi from me.”

“You’re sure she’ll believe this?” Seven said, fidgeting.

“She’s a hopeless romantic.” Mina said, leaning on Seven’s shoulder. “Calm down. Aren’t you supposed to be the spy here?”

“Can’t. Job irrelevant. Why are we meeting here again?”

“The only other people who care I exist run this place.” Mina said, just as Mrs. Gye wandered out from the back with her arms full of side dishes.

<Mi-na! Who’s this cutie?> She asked, and Mina laughed when Seven blushed bright red.

<Mrs Gye! You’re embarrassing me!> Mina said, hiding her face in her hands.

<I’m Saeyoung, Ma’am.> Seven said, politely. <Mina hasn’t told you about me?> Who in the fuck is Saeyoung? Also how did he go from shaking nervous to suave that fast?

Mina sighed and looked through her fingers at Seven who just smirked, so she dropped her hands.

<Surely I mentioned Seven to you at some point.> Mina said, determined.

<Either way, you brought him to me now.> Mrs. Gye said, smiling. <Stand up young man, let me get a look at you.>

Seven did as he was told, which made Mina laugh as he blushed when she inspected him and said flattering but forward things about his muscle tone.

While this inspection was in progress, Emily walked in, and looked around before spotting Mina.

“Hey girl!” She said, planting herself in the open seat at their table. “Father said he should be able to get the eviction cleared off our records, but getting the money back’s gonna cost more than it’s worth.”

“Oh, well then. That’s fine.” Mina shrugged.

Seven’s eyes snapped up at the sound of Mina speaking English, and Mrs. Gye immediately excused herself.

“Whoa, girl! Who’s this?”

“Well, I told you I had news, right?”

“Hi.” Seven said, holding a hand out towards Emily. “I’m Seven.”

“YOU GOT A BOYFRIEND?!” Emily said, at the top of her lungs, the whole restaurant quieting for just long enough for Mina to be mortified. “Is this who you were spending all those hours gaming with?”

“Not all of them, but a lot.” Seven said, and Mina let herself lean on Seven’s shoulder again, her cheeks pink. This is so awkward.

“But I thought you said you played with a Korean guild?”

<Are you telling me I don’t look sufficiently Korean?> Seven said, raising an eyebrow at her.

“Sorry, I don’t speak a word of it.” Emily said.

“Oh, I was asking if you didn’t think I looked Korean enough.” Seven said with a smirk.

“Your English is too good.” Emily shrugged. “Are you a transplant like Mina then?”

“Something like that.” Seven said. “I live and work in Seoul though.”

“That’s the news.” Mina said. “I’m moving to Seoul. With Seven.”

“WHAT?!” Emily managed to keep her volume down, but even still, her shock was palpable.

“Yeah, I have interviews with C&R and a couple other places next week.”

“Mina your written Korean is garbage.”

Mina blushed. “I know. What better way to improve than to dive into the deep end?”

When their meal was complete, Emily stood and turned to leave “By the way - Father says C&R is a good company… I hope you get that one.”

Mina looked down at the Passport in her hands, and back up at Vanderwood. It wasn’t a fake, it was a shiny new version of her old passport. “How did you—”

“You’re better off if you don’t ask.” Seven said. “Vanderwood works best when he’s a mystery. Like with the dishes. I don’t ask how they get done, but they always seem to be clean.”

Mina shared a look with Vanderwood, and smirked. Looks like I might end up doing the dishes.

“So, Mina Cha. Are you ready to start your new life in Seoul?” Seven stood, one hand outstretched in her direction.

“You mean my vacation, right?” Mina said, one eyebrow raised.

“Riiight. Vacation.” Seven said, grinning as she took his hand.
