Out of all the Titans, Y/N was the quietest. She kept to herself most of the time and tried to stay out of everyone’s way.  But that didn’t stop her from observing the people around you.
She was hypervigilant and saw through all the crap that the Titans told each other. Like how Dick tried to see past his horrible childhood and refuses to believe that he reflects that on the other people in the tower. Or how Kory is such a badass on the outside, but on the inside she was struggling to find herself. But one of the most difficult things for her to watch was the number of times they put their needs before Gar’s, but he was always there for him.
It hurt the girl to watch them do that to the poor boy, so she took it upon herself to come to his aid. It hadn’t been long since C.A.D.M.U.S Labs basically kidnapped Gar and Conner from the tower and forced them to do their bidding. It took a lot out of Gar, especially with the loss of Donna that same night. Everyone was upset with Donna’s passing, but none of them paid attention to Gar or Conner’s feelings. They too had suffered a tremendous amount.
Y/N could hear Gar, at night, crying through the walls. He grew distant from the Titans, keeping to himself mostly. And not once did a single person try to do something about it.
The girl sat on the couch, listening to some classical music through her headphones as she randomly drew using her sketch pad. Classical music somehow brought out an artistic side to her. It was something she learned with Dick. Out of nowhere, a blank-faced Gar stormed into the large room, and into the kitchen.
Seeing this, Y/N removed the headphones from her ears and placed them around her neck. She moved her art supplies from off her lap and uncurled herself from her crisscross position. She stood, walking over to a clearly upset Gar, as he aggressively pulled out a box of cereal, practically slamming it onto the counter.
“Are you okay, Gar?” Y/N asked, concerned for her friend who once again slammed a bowl on the counter, next to the cereal.
“Is that classical music?” Gar asked, glaring up at the girl. His head twitched and his eyes turned green. Y/N took that as a sign of hostility, but she wasn’t scared.
She nodded, “Yes. It helps me focus.” Gar was not happy with the music that was blasting through her headphones. “Well, turn it off,” he barked as he went to grab some milk. She respectfully obeyed Gar's orders, turning her headphones off, so no one could hear the music.
What’s wrong with you, Mr. grumpy,” Y/N joked, keeping a curious eye on the green haired boy.
Looking up at the ceiling, he rubbed his face, letting out a loud groan. “I don’t want to talk about it,” he sighed, now looking the girl straight in the eye.
Y/N nodded her head, giving the boy a sad smile. “Well, if you need anything, I’m here.” Her loving tone seeped through the boy’s ears as a warm fuzzy feeling rushed through his body. A small smile appeared on Gar’s face as nodded and went back to making his food.
Y/N gave the boy one last look before collecting her stuff and leaving the room entirely. ‘If he wants to talk to me, I won’t force him. Just let him come to you, Y/N,’ Y/N thought to herself as she exited the room. Leaving the boy alone.
Gar watched the girl’s movement and contemplated her words. It was something he rarely heard unless it was him trying to help his friends. It felt nice to know there was someone willing to help him.
Tumblr media
Later that night, Gar stood in Y/N’s door frame, watching as she made her bed, tucking in her sheets and covers, for that perfect hold on her as she slept. He knocked on the wooden door, catching the attention of the young girl. Her head flew up, breaking her concentration from her bed, and a warm smile appeared when she saw the boy standing in her doorway.
“Hey,” She spoke, in a cheerful manner. Gar didn’t smile back. The girl frowned, sensing something wrong. The boy stepped closer to the girl, allowing her to see the dried-up tears that ran down Gar’s face.
“Gar?” She asked, concerned for the boy. He didn’t speak. He, instead, walked over to the girl, making her jump slightly as he pulled her into an unexpected hug. She quickly wrapped her arms around him, patting his back.
“Gar, what’s wrong? You’re scaring me,” She spoke, hearing small sobs against her back. “Can I sleep in here?” The boy asked quietly. Y/N stayed quiet, feeling the vibration as Gar cried into her neck.
She had a feeling she knew why the boy wanted to stay with her for the night. She felt her face warm up as she tried to imagine what the boy was going through. A tear ran down her face as she nodded. "Y-yeah, you can stay tonight," she stuttered.
Gar pulled back from her, wiping the tears, not wanting Y/N to see him cry, but she already saw everything. She saw the broken boy ages ago, it wasn’t until now that she saw how broken he really was.
Placing her hand on his back, she led him over to the right side of the bed, pulling out the cover to allow him to lie down. He did as intended before the girl went over to the other side, crawling in next to him.
She turned off the light, and just lay with her back on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. Gar lay on his side, watching the dark shadow of her door. His mind wandered as he began to remember what it was like to not be in control. To be in the dark. He remembered the people he killed, and how C.A.D.M.U.S had hurt him. He remembered the pain he felt from the time he was taken from the tower to the time Rachel had released him from the mind prison he was forced into.
Y/N heard the familiar cries. Those similar to the ones she would hear through the walls. Gar sniffled as two arms wrapped around his figure, pulling him into their embrace. He relaxed, knowing it was Y/N comforting him.
“I’m sorry for snapping earlier,” Gar mumbled through his tears.
Y/N tilted her head as she looked down at the boy, calmly playing with his hair. It was something her mother had done when she was upset. She smiled and said, “It’s fine Gar. You went through some pretty traumatic stuff. We all have times when we’re scared to open up. No one blames you.”
“No, I shouldn’t have gotten mad like that.” Gar went quiet as he tried to muster up the courage to say what he needed to. “It’s just that… Classical music is what C.A.D.M.U.S used to brainwash me. Obviously, you didn't know that, and therefore it was wrong for me to get upset.”
Y/N felt guilty. She didn’t know any of that. Her breath hitched at the thought of all the things C.A.D.M.U.S did to the teenage boy in her arms. The torture. The mental and physical pain that he went through, watching as he uncontrollably killed many people, both innocent and guilty. She was sympathetic toward the boy, and it hurt, even more, to see that no one else cared as much as Y/N did.
“When I sleep, I hear their screams. I could hear the sound of myself clawing and biting into innocent people. Children running scared in fright. I never wanted that for myself or anyone for that matter.”
Y/N rubs his back in a comforting way, staring blankly at a wall as she listens to Gar’s words. “I wake up, and my pillow is soaked. I cry in my sleep. And every night, it’s the same thing. Sometimes during the day, I can hear them. Their pleas for me to stop. Their cries for help. I feel so disoriented nowadays.”
Y/N kisses Gar’s forehead and quietly says, “You just need a little guidance. And I may not know exactly what you’re going through, but everyone has been through some life-changing stuff, no matter how hard they push it down. Me…” she said pointing at herself, even though she knew Gar couldn’t see her. “I’ve always been in the background. Always listening. Always watching. And even though I’m able to live in the background, I still get lonely. It feels as though I know everyone else's struggles, but no one knows mine. And that’s where me and you are the same. You work so hard to make everyone else happy, but you don’t make time to make yourself happy… at least, not in the way you want to be happy.”
He silently cried into the girl’s pillow, taking it all in, listening to every word the girl spoke as if it were a scripture in a holy text. He thought about what she was saying, and he realized that he was right. He had been there to pick everyone else up, but who would be there to pick him up.
He then remembered what Y/N had said about herself, only for him to realize that he had never noticed the girl at all. He didn’t really know anything about the girl holding him in her arms.
‘Who is this girl?’ Gar questioned himself before sitting up, forcing himself out of the girl’s arms so that he could actually look at her. But when Gar turned to get a better look, everything around him changed. He wasn’t in Y/N’s bed anymore. He was on his own. And instead of the moonlight seeping through the curtains, the sun's bright beams of light blinded him. He looked down at where the girl once was, but she was nowhere to be found.
Gar stood from his bed, resting his feet on the floor below him. He readjusted his nightshirt before leaving his room. The green-haired boy looked left and right, both curious and confused about what was going on.
He walked through the tower to get to the living room, and he looked at the couch where Gar remembered the girl once sat. Behind him, Dick walked into the room, giving the boy a questioning look. “You okay, Gar?” Dick asked, stepping closer to the boy. Gar stood in his spot as Dick’s words ran on a loop in his head, each time sounding more and more like the girl.
Gar scoffed before turning around to face Dick. Dick called Gar’s name once more before Gar asked, “Where’s Y/N?”
Dick was utterly confused by his question. He didn’t know anyone by that name, and it worried him that Gar was so eager for the girl's whereabouts. “Who’s Y/N,” Dick asked as he tried to get more information out of the boy.
Gar shook his head in disbelief. He saw the girl. She was sitting on the very couch that was sitting right next to him. They talked as if they knew one another, and she held him in her arms. He felt as if he had known the girl. But did he really know the girl?  And it suddenly clicked in his head that before today, he had never noticed the girl.
‘Was it all a dream?’

A/N: I know the ending is a little bad and rushed, but I just wanted to add a bit of an element of surprise. It was more of a last-minute choice.
But, if any of you, and I mean ANY of you need someone to talk to, I am here. This story is inspired by my personal life, so I understand. Sometimes we don't know how to ask for help, or we have no one who understands us, but I want you to know that you have a voice when it comes to me. Just DM me, and I will listen.

My most recent thought from my Titans thoughts that I saved in my notes:
I like comparing Dickkory to Dick and Barbara, because I see most of his old interests as being plot devices that explain Dick Grayson and move the story forward by giving us insight into his past because he is a main character. It honestly gave me jock and cheerleader do drugs together for the first time vibes, y'know? Like, golden boy and golden girl. Daughter of the police commissioner and adopted son of a billionaire.
No one would be surprised if they got together but also because of their societal position it may at times feel good to be bad. To rebel. And honestly no one would ever suspect them which makes it even more exciting. They were rebelling against what others wanted them to be or be like. For her it was her father's position but for Dick it was finding his own identity outside of Batman/Bruce Wayne. The adrenaline of a heist mixed with the possibility of a Bonnie and Clyde life led to the excitement of a first love between the two of them but when they meet again, they struggle with their working relationship, they constantly butt heads and not in the way that leads to talking things through and finding clarity but in the way that opens up old wounds and old feelings that are better off buried than reincarnated.
He only tried to fix things with Barbara because Kory asked him to. He snaps at Barbara for the Oracle debacle but somehow remains calm when Kory mentions working with gangsters. Although there is more discussion between Dick and Barbara in S3, there is more trust between Dick and Kory.
Maybe that could be because of age and the time in their lives mixed with the circumstances. Dick and Barbara were young and rebellious working to steal and screw people over believing that it was love while Dick and Kory, though a bit lost in knowing who they are and who they will become have a common purpose in protecting and nurturing a child who is struggling with something that could mean damnation for the whole world. They find not only trust but comfort in one another. They discover a support system and someone that they can depend on.
When Dick thinks Kory came back to his door in episode 5 and seems like he's about to apologize which means he knew he upset her or was about to truly explain his behavior which shows growth. When Kory goes to fight Deathstroke with Dick, which shows understanding and partnership. When Dick talks to her about Garth and possibly told her about Jericho before anyone else, which shows trust. It's the difference between a relationship built on adult circumstances versus teenage ones. The teenage issues eventually fade and then there is nothing left to be angsty about except the past. But when you're older, you're more likely to want to nurture and foster what you have, because you know that if you don't, that's it. You don't get as many chances so you can't be as reckless. It was 'young and reckless' Dick Grayson versus 'grounded in trust and family' Dick Grayson, not Barbara versus Kory.

New Titans Fic: “How Dick and Conner Became a Thing” Sneak Peek:
What…the fuck was that about? What set his stomach off? It couldn’t have been anything that had occurred between him and Slade, he took a pill for that specifically. He tried to recall just what he had eaten, shrugging it off as nerves or possible side-effects of the Morning After Pill, standing up and cleaning the toilet. Once that was done, he washed his hands and then brushed his teeth, cleaning out his mouth.
It probably didn’t help that his nerves were positively rattled, genuinely afraid for once in his life…but not for his own life.
No, he was worried about his team…his new family. He had already lost one team and one family to Deathstroke. He wasn’t going to let it happen again, his own happiness be damned.
Once he dried off his face, Dick opened the bathroom door, shivering at the change of temperature. Shit, he probably forgot to turn the fucking heat on again. Going to the thermostat to do just that, at least as a common courtesy to Gar, Krypto and Conner, he walked smack dab right into a wall of muscles.
A very naked wall of muscles.
Dick yelped in surprise, catching himself on Conner’s pecs, but then jumping and quickly pulling his hands away once he realized just where he had grabbed the evidently taller man, muttering a curse under his breath. He didn’t get too far, feeling hands steady him by the biceps, Conner looking down into his eyes, honey brown meeting cool blues.
Conner smiled down at Dick, Dick blushing as he carefully put some distance between them, “Uh…hi. You’re awake, I see,” Dick greeted awkwardly, trying not to look down at the sizable length laying heavily against his own leg, “Um…did you need something? Like, pants?”

Dick & Rachel and the Invisible String theory (part 1)
Tumblr media
Well, I finally gave in and decided to write it all down. How can I not when the show is basically slapping me in the face with it? It's all right there, if you're only willing to look. I've been dropping the phrase invisible string in relation to these two here and there for a while now and it's time to give it some more sense.
And yes, I am well aware this might be a stretch - it's Titans, nothing is ever intentionally that deep. But if there's one thing that show ever did right, it's this relationship, from the pilot to the end. So it's worth looking into it for me even if it's only my delusion speaking and it's not officially a thing.
So what is the Invisible String in this case? It's a connection, most likely supernatural, linking these two characters together and tethering them to each other in a way that is unexplainable by either logic or feelings. It plays into the definition of soulmates, though in this particular case other things like fate or magical powers might be connected. It's a bond made of love, fueled by love, but not responsible for it - the characters' feelings feed into it and strengthen it but they are their own and aren't affected by the existence nor strength of the bond. After all, even with the connection already in place, Dick and Rachel could have met and ended up hating each other.
Which means that not every scene they share will end up on this list I've put up here. Most of the time, the characters' actions are driven by their feelings, and the circumstances surrounding the scene are easily explainable. But sometimes, something strange happens and no matter how you look at it, you can't figure out how it happened without the so-called "higher power" at play.
(the higher power in question is most likely my delusion but fuck it we ball)
So where does it start? Obviously, in the pilot episode.
Tumblr media
The dream that had started it all. The show is opened by it, it sucks you right in. This is where the String is born. Rachel walks right into Dick's memory of his parents' death and lives through it with him, even though she has no idea about it at the time. The dream we see in the pilot is also not the first time she has it; when she wakes up screaming and her mother comes in to comfort her, Rachel tells her what happened in half-sentences and broken words, not bothering to explain further and Melissa's look of understanding tells us that she already knows the story. The most important detail proving the connection's existence here is in Rachel's words.
"He was so scared. I felt it."
Somehow, thanks to her still developing powers, she was able to feel what he was feeling in that moment, proving that she is indeed inside his memory. Rachel didn't sense Mary's or John's emotions - only Dick's. Because they are gone and he's still alive so the memory is still alive as well.
The only thing the show had never bothered to explain here is the why. Why him? Why this? It feels a little random at the surface level, dreaming about a memory of some stranger you've never met. Even if we're talking about fate, about destiny bringing them together, the question still stands. Why Dick? Why didn't Rachel dream about the moment Gar became a metahuman? Or the moment Kory came to Earth? That one would have made sense, since Kory had been sent with the mission to kill The Raven. Guess we'll never know.
The connection is the most visible from Rachel's end, because her powers come into play. They might even be the reason the String exists in the first place. After her mother is killed, Rachel runs to her hometown's bus station and seemingly randomly picks Detroit as her destination, unaware that this is exactly where Dick is. The String is leading her to him without her even knowing.
But we can see it working through him as well, even though he's human and doesn't have any magical abilities.
We're introduced to a detective/vigilante, who's known in his day job for helping kids. The very first scene we see him in, he's looking through a file of a physically abused child. So the situation in the pilot is not his first rodeo. He's been dealing with kids in his line of work before, troubled kids more often than not. Rescued them from sticky situations (either with or without the Robin suit), and most definitely signed off some papers and handed the kids over to social services. And he never got attached. No matter how bad the situation was. His job required him to not get involved.
But then this kid shows up, a kid who recognizes him somehow (she can sense something familiar about him the second he walks in but doesn't clock it until he tells her his name) and she knows things about him she's not supposed to know. She tells him her mom was killed and his demeanor changes from slightly hostile to compassionate immediately because it's something he can relate to. She's begging for help with eyes full of tears, so blindly trusting despite just meeting him, talking like he's her only hope and his resolve is already starting to break.
And then she takes his hand. Whether intentionally or not, she dives into his head, and her dream and his memory become one. They expand, giving Rachel further glimpses into his past. And they both feel it.
Tumblr media
And boy, does it spook him. The weird and very conscious feeling of getting sucked into his own head, the unexplainable connection to this kid in front of him who for some reason is able to dig in his brain, a connection that only seems to be fueled by his growing concern for her and her situation. It clearly freaks him out. He's a lone wolf, he doesn't get attached. Neither his day or night job allow it. So what does he do about it? He runs.
Tumblr media
"I can't give you the kind of help you need." But he wants to. And it scares the shit out of him because this shouldn't be happening. This should be easy. Get her statement, check it, call social workers. Sign off a few papers and be done with it. Just another kid, another file, another day at the office.
And yet he has to force himself to leave the room and not give in to her desperate begging. He goes to do what he's supposed to do, turns it into just another case.
He tries to leave it. Makes some calls, grabs his coat and heads out. Dude is already out of the building, ready to call it a day and let someone else take over but something stops him in the middle of the parking lot. A sense of duty? Strange worry twisting his gut? Instinct telling him that something isn't right? Something is pulling him back to this girl and no matter how hard he's trying, Dick can't walk away.
Tumblr media
Because you see, the moment Rachel took his hand and they both experienced the memory at the same time, the String solidified. I visualize it in my head as two opposite ends slowly reaching toward each other and when this happens–
Tumblr media
–the ends meet. They snap together and two separate pieces of the String become one. Only the thing is, right now it's just a thin thread. Now it's up to them to either break it or make it stronger.
(if somehow you're still reading, I assume you know what happens)
As we dive further into Season 1, there are plenty of moments along the way that show how the String strengthens with Dick and Rachel growing closer. 1x04 especially has a moment that is a definite milestone in their relationship — Dick making a conscious decision to stay and take care of Rachel, no longer afraid of the connection and responsibility. But we don't see the String at work again until episode 1x07, "Asylum".
Tumblr media
Now, as a singular event, this next scene doesn't necessarily qualify, because it can be logically, scientifically even, explained. But it's here because it's the first of the several instances creating a pattern across all seasons: a pattern of Rachel bringing Dick back to reality from the confines of his own mind.
She seems to be the only one to have this ability to such an extent as she does, and as the seasons go, we even watch it grow in its effectiveness.
When she finds him, he's been pumped with drugs and kept trapped inside his head for an unspecified amount of time, we can assume more than an hour. He's limp, completely unresponsive and it takes her several tries to wake him up. And what does it? A reminder of what connects them, of the promise he made her, the promise that he will never leave her.
Tumblr media
It's not that easy to notice unless you look closely but his eyes gain focus and snap to hers the second she says "You promised!" Unknowingly, Rachel tugs at the String and yanks him back with those two words — she needs him to remember, she needs him back because she's scared, and even though her own mother is standing right behind her, none of it matters because Rachel won't feel truly safe unless he's there to keep her safe — and it works because keeping that promise is a priority to him, it's what keeps him going. "Yeah, I guess I did," he says as he comes to his senses and gives a tiny reassuring smile to let her know that he remembers. And we all breathe with relief (well, I did).
Then we move to the very end of episode 1x10 "Koriand'r".
Tumblr media
Why is Dick the only one able to cross the cloaking barrier around Angela's house? Why did he run at it at full speed, determined and so sure he'll break through even though he risked literally crashing into a wall, and went right through it with no problem, while neither Kory nor Donna couldn't? It's simple: Trigon allowed it because he knew about the String. Having similar powers to Rachel, he could sense it in his daughter and decided to use it against her. He even knew when Dick and the girls appeared in front of the barrier. Trigon recognized how important all these people are to Rachel, but there was something about this particular bond that caught his attention and made him realize Dick is the perfect pawn. If he wants to break his daughter, he first needs to break the one person she loves the most.
What deserves a special mention here is a little moment at the end of episode 1x11 "Dick Grayson" because this is the first time in the show that the word "love" is used to describe Dick and Rachel's relationship. And it comes from none other than Trigon himself.
Tumblr media
Because you do. He knows. Despite never having met either of them before. Trigon has been back on Earth for what, an hour? And he sensed it right away.
That's it for season 1. I was originally planning to put all seasons in one post but obviously didn't consider that there is a 10 image limit and that I talk too much lol
So if you're curious for more, read part 2 and part 3 here. They will dive into how the Invisible String manifests itself in season 2, and check out part 4 for seasons 3 & 4!

First time ever actually getting to season 2 in Titans, typically brain worms loose interest halfway through season 1 or I watch too late in the night when the young tired anxious brain worms are working and the violence is too much for them and I have a panic attack and have to stop watching for a while, but it’s held pretty strong this time.
Anyways, I just finished s2e4, feel like I’m supposed to be recognizing a name here, but I am about to strangle Dick because Jericho is adorable and innocent and I’m in love and Dick is about to murder. Again, feel like I’m supposed to recognize that name, not gonna Google it because I don’t want to get spoilers, but without name recognition I am only feeling very angry at Dick (once again, that is, I get angry at him quite often, I was already angry at present him for being emotionally stunted and hurting Jason, now I’m angry at past him as well).
loved introducing aqualad just to kill him, I was literally sitting in the dining hall watching this episode and said out loud to nobody “ah, I bet he’s here to die”.
Funny thing, the girl at the table next to me was watching animated Teen Titans at the same time. Didn’t know her, didn’t say anything to her about it, but I thought it was funny. She was on one of the episodes with Terra, who I love.
also, I’m paused like a quarter through e5 and very aware of what happens to Jason, you can’t avoid all spoilers and literally every iteration of the stories loves to put The Jason Todd through hell and back, so I’m only making this post so that I can prolong unpausing because he is baby and it’s Dick’s fault is what I’m telling myself over and over again
