In the second version they're coloured with the palette of the nonbinary flag. End ID]

The Owl House x Wolf Children crossover aka “the AU I took too far.”
A picture of @stardustcandies Hunter werewolf au popped up on my fyp, I had a disconnected thought about Wolf Children a few hours later and then this happened.
To get some of the scenes to line up with either Hunter or Luz, I had to break some canonical eggs between Ame and Yuki’s scenes. But also, sound off if you recognize some of the scenes I tried to replicate.
Also also just Lineart and some flat colors for now. M ight come back and clean it all up later.
My disjointed thoughts on this au are essentially “it’s Wolf Children, but swap shapeshifting for wild magic, except shapeshifting is also a huge association. Case and point, Edna’s owl beast transformation.” And Luz and Hunter are Eda’s kids, adopted separately. While she’s early into raising them, Eda is found/starts reconnecting with an old lover, Raine. Raine’s always known Eda was a wild witch with the enhanced ability to transform into the Owl Beast, something that’d frightened them away previously, along with a healthy dose of communication and trust issues between both parties. Upon reconnecting, they take things slower than in their youth, however, just as they’re truly starting to see eye-to-eye, Eda dies, leaving a heartbroken Raine and two already-orphaned and traumatized young kids who both have heavy traces of wild magic.
In keeping with the movie plot line, Raine eventually gives up his future and career with the Bard coven and goes into hiding/moves to the Knee or something, to raise Hunter and Luz. Wild magic is heavily persecuted in this au, and displays of shape shifting, even in young witches without any proper training, is regarded with great suspicion. And considering they’re already out of their depth with parenting, Raine doesn’t want to take any chances. Queue Raine growing into a supportive and loving parents for Eda's two adopted strays and eventually weaving back in his Bard talents and continuing to learn more about wild magic and Eda along the way.
Prior to being adopted by Eda, Hunter was fed the story that wild magic wipes out his biological family and his shape shifting abilities were a residual curse. As far as he’s been told/remembers, he got that first scar on his face from that incident. Trauma aside, Hunter is also very self conscious about it, up to the point of really disliking his reflection in mirrors, crystals, and windows as a kid, so he wore a golden wolf-themed mask for a while to help him cope. As he’s gotten older, he’s grown out of needing it. While Luz leaned heavily into their shape-shifting abilities and is enthralled by wild magic, Hunter tried to suppress it. He would indulge Luz and her curiosity while they were both young, but, upon starting school and being exposed to more "acceptable" outlets of magic, he starts trying to keep a tighter control on his phasing abilities, only spontaneously changing when overwhelmed by emotions or stressed. Jump forward to his class getting a new student, Gus, who'd jumped up a couple grades and, being an illusionist, immediately hones in on Hunter, asking him questions and just being generally nosy. Hunter eventually gets overwhelmed and, feeling cornered, partially phases and scratches Gus's face, very close to his eye and potentially a huge detriment for a budding illusionist. Years later, we get the same iconic classroom scene with Hunter, having run away due to some fear of being outed as a wild witch/Luz has just announced her intention of leaving to be fully wild and Hunter fears persecution due to familial association, and is found by Gus, partially transformed, who reveals he'd known the whole time but held no ill-will.
Luz, on the other hand, although interested in magic, was always most interested in the type of magic Eda practiced. Luz being the youngest, she wasn't old enough to remember much about Eda's magic and instead has to rely on Raine, who doesn't much to satisfy her curiosity. When she was early school-age, while playing in the grass, Luz found a wild Snake Shifter, Stringbean, who eventually guides her to the Titan (or the corporeal Titan spirit) who helped to teach her about wild magic and glyphs. Enraptured by these lessons, Luz began to prioritize this sort of magic study over the "certified magic study" through school. The Titan's magic has been weakening for years, and thus their corporeal form fading, which will leave Luz without a teacher and the Titan's infant son, King, without a parent. Eventually Luz decided to make the leap of leaving Raine and Hunter to go into the wilds to continue study and maintenance of the wild glyphs that help hold the world together and be a placeholder until King is old enough to succeed his father. I've also had the thought that, through the study and use of structural glyph magic, Luz's wolf form continues to shift into a titan form. She herself is still a witch, but the close proximity and use of the Titan's magic causes her to become more and more Titan-like/it's the lingering effect of the Titan before their corporeal spirit fades so Luz can be there and teach King.

all i can say about watching and dreaming, and it really does pain me to say this, is that it was okay. it was not the greatest thing to ever happen to tv, it was nothing really bad, it was... it was a conclusion to the owl house that was really the best the writers could do with the time disney gave them. and that's why i forgive it for its okayness- it literally isn't the writers' faults at all. man. it was rushed, but why wouldn't it be? you expect that at this point. they did all they could. but even so, no individual character was really given any effectively emotional development or moments except maybe luz. the rest of the hexsquad took a backseat to the action. everyone felt kinda flat.
one thing that gets my eternal commendation, however, is the "WE AIN'T!" moment. my god. CAN YOU SAY ICONIC??? i'm SOOO glad raine got to be a part of the group belos curb stomping. they deserve it💙💙💙 and everyone's post-timeskip looks... eda with a hook hand. i'm going to DIE. SHE HAS A HOOK HAND. DO YOU HEAR ME SHE HAS A FUCKING HOOK HAND!! this post is slightly disconnected because i don't really know how to organize my thoughts at the moment. expect more posts like this in the next couple of days

My brain: “We have a beautiful and fun Halloween fic idea!”
Me: “No way, we have way too many other fics to be working on, and we wrapped up our Halloween fic last year…”
My brain: “But it’s our magic creative hour of 2 AM! We must see what comes from it!”
Me: *Writes 1,000-word intro for a new Halloween fic.* “What have I done… and why would we start a project like this only a week til Halloween?!”
In case I don’t finish it in time or don’t come up with any more to add this year, here’s a fun little intro teaser to a random Halloween fic that I apparently just had to write out xD
If and when I do finish it, I'll be sure to add a link at the bottom :D
(EDIT: I did! Chapters 3 & 4 are this fic on the link. Happy Halloween!)
Witch Entertainment
(Jesse McCree x Female Reader 18+)
The chill autumn breeze blows through you in your Overwatch hoodie, jeans, and boots. You shiver at its presence, giving you goosebumps over your skin as your hoodie with a long sleeve underneath does little to defend against the colder evening air. You stay huddled up next to your boyfriend as the heels on both your boots and his, click on the stone pathway leading to a large stone castle. Along with the crunch of stepping on fall leaves every so often. Illuminated by lanterns along the path and candle-lit Jack’o lanterns. The sounds of bats overhead and an owl somewhere off in the trees along your path.
“Ya hangin’ in there?” Your boyfriend says with his smooth Southern drawl. His cowboy hat barely moves to the wind as it lightly blows now and then. His spurs jingle loudly and echo off the cobblestone path. He seems a lot more unfazed by the chilly breeze with his denim jacket and jeans. A plain black tee tucked in to show his “BAMF” belt buckle and holster on his hip. His iconic Peacekeeper revolver sits snuggly inside it, with the breeze spinning the spur on its handle now and then.
You slowly nod and try to control your shivering. “Yea…” You speak softly. “Sure is colder here than at the base…”
Jesse lightly chuckles, wrapping an arm around you, holding you tight against him. “Yea, sorry bout that.” He smiles, kissing your head. “I don’t think it should be as cold the rest of the time we’re here…” His tone is soft as you continue to walk.
‘Where is here?’ That is what you wanted to ask. Not knowing how exactly you got here, to begin with. Jesse mentioned it was a surprise and has been very vague on any details.
You try to process your day so far up until now. Remember being at Watchpoint Gibraltar in the early afternoon during a light rainstorm and Jesse telling you that we would leave for a couple of days and leading you to the med bay. A secret room in the med bay housing a teleporter that you hadn’t seen before and suddenly you’re teleported here, outside, and at night.
A forest area that seems secluded with a stone castle in the distance that appears like it would fit in well at Eichenwalde. Jesse had sprung this last-minute “trip” after you had mentioned how it was odd that you hadn’t felt the Halloween spirit yet this year. Especially with the holiday fast approaching and even decorating your quarters with Halloween decorations and lights. Making it cozy and matching the season perfectly, but the rest of the base lacks any celebration this year or decor.
“We’re almost there…” Jesse’s tone remains soft as he still holds you close. Sharing his body heat with you as you draw nearer to the castle.
You glance around more at your environment, barely seeing past the lanterns lighting the pathway, making the surrounding trees and forest dark and shadowy. “This place is a little spooky…” You speak softly while looking around.
“Ya ain’t scared,... Are ya?” Jesse grins.
You give him a gentle smile. “Not with you here.”
“Good answer.” He whispers, kissing your cheek softly.
You both finally reach the castle, approaching its large wooden doors with metal ring handles and door knockers. You give Jesse an unsure look while examining the large structure and its entrance. “Well after you…” He gestures to the door with a soft smile.
You swallow before slowly grabbing the cold metal ring of one of the knockers. Its weight becomes apparent as you move and lift it away from the door. The stiff metal ring moves with a grind before you drop it back against the door, knocking loudly.
You and Jesse stand in the cold breeze for a moment longer without words or movements, before one of the doors slowly opens with a chilling creaking sound. You keep an unsure look on your face as you glance at Jesse as he gestures to you to go ahead.
You slowly walk inside with Jesse right behind you. Leaning on and closing the heavy wooden door, silencing the wind from outside. You notice the temperature change when entering the castle, feeling much warmer with being enclosed and out of the wind.
The foyer of the castle is lined with candles and candelabras, keeping the space well-lit. Jesse causes your body to tense for a moment when he suddenly grabs your hand and slowly leads you down the hall into the main part of the castle.
You come to a sort of sitting room or living room with large windows looking out into the surrounding night forest. The interior of the room is warm and cozy and filled with witchy decorations and magical potions. Vintage furniture such as sofas and a couple of chairs along with wooden end tables and a coffee table. Centered around a lit fireplace, giving the space an added warmth.
Jesse leads you to sit on the couch, a soft velvet-like texture that’s warm from the fire. He removes his jacket and places it over your shoulders, giving you his heat for your hoodie to absorb. “Alright…” Jesse speaks quietly with a smile, kneeling in front of you. “Close yer eyes, Pumpkin.”
You hesitate for only a brief moment before slowly closing your eyes. The warmth relaxes you in the foreign space. You keep your eyes closed, listening to the crackling of the fire but not hearing any other sounds besides that, making you a little nervous but still calm with it being peaceful.
Your body tensed again at the feeling of a gloved hand gently grabbing and lifting your chin. You keep your eyes closed but notice a new aroma of different herbs and spices. Like hints of vanilla and pumpkin.
“Did someone call for a Witch?” The familiar female voice with a Swiss-German accent grabs your attention, making you open your eyes.
Your eyes widen with surprise with you seeing Witch Mercy leaning down to face you while holding your chin to look at her.

Occasional musings on Disney’s accidental masterpiece
Issue 1 | Issue 2
Timeline, Part 2
Last time, we discussed the timeline of National Treasure from the explosion of the Charlotte to the night of the gala. Our conclusion: Ben, Riley, and Abigail were probably all tired before the adventure even began.
Heist & Car Chase
Then of course we have the heist and subsequent car chase. The key word here is adrenaline.
It’s clear from Ben and Riley’s behavior heading into the heist that they’re both on edge about it. Ben cuts off Riley’s last attempt to talk him out of it as he gets out of the van, and can’t bring himself to talk over the earpiece for a moment, seemingly because if he does, this is really happening. He’s really going to attempt to steal the Declaration of Independence.
Then of course we have Ben’s iconically weird toast. While the rest of the movie doesn’t exactly suggest Benjamin Franklin Gates is a Super Normal Chill Guy™ on an average day, here he’s baaaaaarely keeping it together.
Abigail, for her part, doesn’t seem to be having a great time either. When we first see her before Ben shows up, she’s wandering around by herself looking around and holding her coat over her arms.
Tumblr media
She even lets out an exasperated sigh. While not high stress in the same way as stealing a priceless, highly secure artifact, we can infer that she might not enjoy socializing in a big crowd like this. That in itself is draining. She’s also probably avoiding Dr. Herbert. This subplot is much more pronounced in the early script, but we’ll discuss that later.
And then there’s the shooting! Ben, Riley, and Abigail are all shot at in the span of maybe twenty minutes? Abigail is also kidnapped, held at gunpoint, and flung out on the door of a speeding van.
Then it’s the stop in the park and the drive to wherever in Virginia or Maryland Patrick lives. Ben and Riley know they’re being hunted by the FBI, and Abigail has been semi-kidnapped by (as far as she knows) a pair of unhinged theives-slash-conspiracy-theorists.
I would already need a nap is all I’m saying.
Patrick’s House
Before they process the Declaration, Ben says, “Dad, it’s really late. Why don’t you get some rest?”
Now, it’s unclear exactly how late it is, but assuming it was after 9pm when Ben and Riley arrived (people are still entering, but most of the guests seem to already be inside) it has to at least be a few hours later, perhaps 11 or 12 by the time they show up on Patrick’s doorstep.
Patrick seems like a night owl given how unfazed he seems by the hour, but it’s clearly late enough that Ben is at least able to use the hour as a plausible reason to shoo his father away, if not actually concerned about his father’s sleep schedule. And that’s before they find the cypher.
Acidifying, heating, and recording the numbers off of the Declaration isn’t a small project. When they pull up to the house, Ben guesses that they have “a couple of hours at least. I hope.”
Road to Philly
If it takes them an hour or two to fully reveal the Ottendorf cypher, that puts them on the road to Philadelphia no earlier than 1 or 2am.
And to the three of them it probably feels much later. The adrenaline of the heist and the thrill of discovering the cypher both have to be coming down by now. Against the lull of the highway, the knowledge that they’re being chased by the FBI can probably compete less and less with the lure of sleep.
Riley, we know, at least dozes in the back seat. Ben and Abigail don’t seem to be considering sleep. Does Ben drive all the way there or does one of the others take over at some point? I’ve always assumed that Ben is exhausted but too on edge to consider taking a break. This was his heist based on his belief in the treasure. He’s responsible for whatever happens next, and I don’t see him being able to relinquish control of the drivers’ seat or anything else until well after the adventure is over. And the driving at least helps keep his mind occupied. (Have any fic recs set during this part? Send ‘em my way!)
The gang is seen arriving in Philadelphia in the early morning. Sunrise in was at 5:30am on June 19, 2004. (As discussed in part 1, this is likely the date the movie is set) It’s about a three hour drive from Washington DC to Philadelphia (give or take their exact starting and ending positions). If they arrive at 6am, half an hour after sunrise, they would have left Patrick’s closer to 3am.
If it is indeed later in the fall, as I tend to believe based on everyone’s clothing choices, sunrise would be closer to 6:45 or 7am, putting them on the road closer to 4am.
What were they doing all day?
There are currently two Urban Outfitters stores nearby the Franklin Institute, the earlier of which opens at 10am. Hard to say if this was the case twenty years ago, and while I find all of this digging incredibly fun, that’s a bit too far down the rabbit hole for me.
However, they clearly didn’t go straight there because, famously, it is “almost three” by the time Ben and Abigail are buying their clothes. This is necessitated by the narrative, because the time on the back of a $100 bill really is 2:22.
Or is it?
Some sources say the time is actually 4:10 (the inverse of 2:22 by switching the hour and minute hands).
That’s on the $100 bills in circulation at the time National Treasure was filmed, from 1996-2013. After the 2013 redesign, newer $100 bills show the time 10:30. Either way you read the 1996-2013 bill, the gang was going to have to wait until the afternoon to see the shadow.
Tumblr media
But as I said, this isn’t about plot holes. This is about taking what the narrative gives us and examining what it means for the characters involved. (Y’all ever heard Harry Potter and the Sacred Text? Even (especially?) if you’re done with HP I really recommend it.)
So…what were they doing during those missing hours? Maybe they slept in the car for a little while, trading off who was on watch. I have to assume that at some point they went into a coffee shop or fast food restaurant for food and to use the bathroom. Of course, since at this point Ben and Abigail are still in their gala clothes, they probably weren’t out in public too much.
These quiet hours are one of my favorite not-seen-on-screen things to think about regarding this movie. I also tend to think they stopped at a 24 hour Burger King in the middle of the night, but that’s just a personal headcanon.
The Intrepid
While Ben is in FBI custody, Ian calls and tells him to meet on the deck on the USS Intrepid at “10 am tomorrow morning.”  That means that between the evening of the Philadelphia portion of the adventure and the next morning, all parties have to get to New York—that’s Ben and the FBI, Ian’s crew, and Abigail and Riley. Although they might have had to travel with Ian’s crew because they don’t have a car or much remaining money??
The meet at the Intrepid seems to be right on schedule. It had to be, both because the FBI wouldn’t dilly dally and put the Declaration at risk, and because Ian’s plan was pretty dependent on accurate timing.
Then it’s a 25 minute drive from Weehawken, New Jersey—which is what’s directly across from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum—and that’s assuming reasonable traffic.
I get that this was like a decade before Alexander Hamilton got cool, but we’re not gonna talk about how the movie goes from the place he was shot to the place he’s buried??
So let’s say by the time they get to the church, it has to be at least 11am.
Trinity Church
If we continue with our assumption that the National Archives gala was on a Friday night, then the Philadelphia leg happened on Saturday, and the New York stretch on Sunday. That poses an additional obstacle: now it’s Sunday and we’re doing light demolition in a clearly empty church.
At present, there are masses held at Trinity Church at 8am, 9am, and 11:15am. It’s likely that the schedule was similar in 2004. Between masses there would be people coming in and out preparing for the next service, so I suspect that if it is Sunday, the gang doesn’t enter until after the final service has cleared out.
If the gala was on Saturday, though this doesn’t explain why Ben was sure Abigail would be at work, it would place the New York leg on Monday. There are currently also daily services held at 12:05pm.
In either case Team Treasure wouldn’t be able to enter the church inconspicuously until after about 1pm, when the final service was over (The 11:15 Sunday service is a longer one that runs until 12:30.)
Trinity Church is open to the public daily from 8:30-6pm.
Finale
Since the rest of the adventure takes place underground, the next indicator we have of time is the light streaming into Trinity Church when Ben is turning himself and the treasure over to Agent Sadusky. The high cathedral windows make it hard to get a sense of when this might be happening.
In any case it is still clearly daytime. By the time the characters “go down the creepy tunnel inside the tomb” and embark on the doomed walk down the staircase, the movie is playing out in more-or less real time. The whole sequence takes about twenty minutes, plus the time it would have taken them to gawk at the treasure for however long, then climb back up Riley’s precious second staircase. So it’s likely sometime in the afternoon.
Tumblr media
However, it is dark by the time Sadusky and Ben catch Ian in Boston.
It’s a 30 minute helicopter flight from New York to Boston, plus travel time to and from wherever they landed, etc. Sunset was at 8:30pm on June 19, 2004, so Ian’s arrest happens well into the evening.
If this is accurate, then it’s been about 48 hours since the adventure-proper began at the gala.
Conclusion
The conclusion here is that they’re tired. I’m talking bone-deep, don’t-remember-hitting-the-pillow, I-need-to-sleep-for-a-week-tired.
Yes they had a bit of downtime, but how much could they really have rested? Our three heroes have maybe gotten a few hours of fitful sleep between them. It’s the first time in a full forty-eight hours that they haven’t been running for their lives, and that is on top of the long week they’d already had.
There’s not really a point to all this other than 1. It’s fun, and 2. Every time I watch National Treasure now I’m struck by how exhausting this whole whirlwind must have been, and how tired they all must be. Relieved and excited and satisfied, yes, but t i r e d. Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to reflect that the time on the $100 bill is debated and changes by edition, and that the Intrepid meeting takes place at 10am.

Cramp Twins headcanons! Mostly about my favorite blue/purple psycho
Wayne's not only the best dancer in town but also an amazing singer
You'll never see him do it though
After Wayne found Lucien's missing owl toy, he secretly cherishes his purple cat toy
The boys sleep with their twins toys, it makes them feel more connected
The boys don't know this but their parents know they do this when they check their rooms at night
The toys are often on their beds or dressers when not being used
It warms their parents hearts
Wayne actually has a full head of hair, but due to the art style, it looks like he doesn't
Wayne has a pet he keeps at Dirty Joe's
Lucien's very upset about this once he finds out
Dorothy can't do anything about it since it's not near the house
Ironically, Wayne's a far better eco person than Lucien is
Lucien obviously doesn't believe this, even when he's seen evidence of it
He refuses to believe that someone like his brother, who could care less about the environment, is far better at saving it than him!
It's more of a subconscious thing for Wayne
Due to Wendy and her weirdo friends' behavior, Wayne is turned off by girls entirely. Even Wendy's personal mechanic Joanne
He associates every girl who hangs around Wendy as bad news, so he'd rather stay away from them
It's why he was so desperate to get rid of his crush on Joanne
They do later become friends though
She still has a crush on him
The only females his age that he gets along with are Patsy, Mari, and Joanne
Besides their iconic sweater symbols, the boys' other symbols are a bear for Lucien and a cat for Wayne
Mrs. Cramp has made all of the boys' sweaters
She loves dressing them a like, so all their outfits have matches
On the days when they accidentally wear the same things, they immediately run back to change outfits
They won't be caught DEAD wearing the same thing if they can help it
Special occasions where their parents dress them up is the only time they'll reluctantly do it
Dorothy makes the twins' birthday cake every year
Lucien has only been a vegetarian for a short amount of time
Wayne is the 1st of the 2 to get an actual job, much to Lucien's disappointment
He becomes the mascot character for a sweet industry: he's a princess
He gets paid in money, and all he can eat sweets
Nobody knows it's him since he gets covered up in makeup and fun girly clothes that he wouldn't normally wear (think Jojo Siwa)
He is now a celebrity because of it, or at least this alter ego is
Wayne is a professional gaslighter
Wayne once tricked Lucien into believing that HE was the younger twin
It was funny at 1st but then got annoying
Lucien likes to bring in swamp animals and leave them for Wayne to find and scare him
Mostly frogs
Wayne has a deep fear of frogs
Lucien always gets in trouble for it but finds it totally worth it
Wayne is just as smart as Lucien, he just uses his in a different way
Lucien got most of the smarts while Wayne got most of the creativity
Tony and Wayne still talk to Randal
Few people are allowed to call Dorothy 'Dottie'
Mr. Winkle and Mr. Parson are cousins
Dirty Joe sees Wayne as a son
Dirty Joe loves kids, but due to his lifestyle, he can't really be around them
Losing his owl toy made Lucien into what he is today
Mrs. Cramp is why Wayne is the way he is
Wayne has a birthmark in the shape of a star on his inner thigh
While both boys' ears are pierced, Wayne has a couple more piercings than Lucien. His ears are pierced multiple times, his nose, his tongue and his belly button
When he's older, he'll get his nipples pierced
Marsha and Tandy are Dorothy's childhood friends
Marsha has 2 kids who are in high school
She got pregnant young
Tandy is secretly a lesbian who had a crush on Marsha's sister when she was younger
Marsha and Tandy are basically the boys, but adults with the way they act towards each other
These 2 will throw shade at any given moment
The soap people have a weird relationship with filth, they can't stand it but also crave it
It's their swamp heritage, though most don't know it
Dorothy's extreme OCD and obsession with cleaning comes from her overbearing and judgmental mother
Dorothy is a daddy's girl
Dorothy will occasionally call Lucien 'LuLu'
Joe tries to get his friends to be nicer to Wayne when they come around
They do like the kid. They're just kinda aggressive?
Both boys are in the LGBTQ community
Lucien is Bi as well as nonbinary, while Wayne is unidentified
Dorothy always wanted a daughter
Big Baby is their cousin from their fathers side
Big Baby is actually older than the boys by at least a year, she simply acts younger to get away with more
She acts a lot like Wayne
This is why she was sent to the Cramp's house the 1st time
Wayne still has the 2 dresses he got from Wendy, as well as the bows and shoes
Lucien still has his pagent gear
Wayne also still has the tiara Dirty Joe gave him
Wendy and her friends are complete perverts when it comes to Wayne. Her friends do it cause they think it's funny, Wendy does it because of her creepy obsession with Wayne
The boys are naturals when it comes to playing music
Wayne actually does know how to play the piano and harp
Most of their gifted talents come from their granddad
The gifted gene runs in his side of the family
Their granddad used to be a performer like Seth but in a different field
The Bad Seed was actually Horace's brother Herman
Twins run on Horace's side of the family
Herman was the Wayne to Horace's Lucien
Lucien's appearance comes from Horace side while Wayne's comes from Dorothy's side
Seth met his wife while performing at the circus
A good amount of my headcanons for the show
Might do more later

Hi Hello it's midnight for me and I just finished watching Steven Universe and the movie (I haven't watched Future yet- gonna do that this weekend) so now I have thoughts
Spoilers for Steven Universe below the cut!
First of all: I'm kicking myself repeatedly for waiting so long to watch it cause HOLY- 😭🥰 IT WAS SO GOOD!!! I wasn't sure I was gonna be into shows like this (Wasn't massively into Adventure Time- don't get me wrong, it was cute as hell and funny but just kinda..eh?) But I finally gave it a shot and WOW!
Tumblr media
My favorite gem is still Garnet; I just- I adore her. She's wise, funny, the whole Sapphire and Ruby ship is so cute ("They were my favorite couple!"- Bismuth my blacksmith queen) and just-GAH! I love how excited she got over fusions and just how lovely she is all around!
Tumblr media
My second favorite is Peridot. I loved her- she is the cutest little green dorito EVA! The way she speaks, her mannerisms, her dynamic with Lapis (Who admittedly I still have mixed feelings on but generally I enjoy her alot)- it was all so freaking kfakjerakjkjrakjerkjekjr I can't get over how cute she is HELP!
Really- I found myself loving all the characters! Pearl is cute as heck, Amethyst is an icon (I loved that scene where she refused to put all her problems onto Steven and recognized he had so much on his plate already- it was truly such a growth moment and I'm beyond proud of her. Plus- Smokey Quartz is an icon), and STEVEN! He's a doll! I adore him so much!
As for Beach City- I don't think I have a non-favorite. Everyone is so charming and silly; and even when they were at their worst they managed to bring it back around. Lars becoming a space pirate and Sadie becoming a rockstar- the grandmother becoming mayor and Ronaldo being..well, Ronaldo; it was all so good! I really do love Greg aswell; that Comet song will be forever stuck in my head. Oh! And Connie! I adore Connie!
As for the movie....eh? Don't get me wrong, it was great- and I really like Spinel; but all the endless songs started to get a little much after a while 😅 There was some great ones like Garnet's return song True Love and Steven's Change song- and of course Other Friends and Drift Away are absolutely incredible. It was a good mix of great songs and....kinda meh songs but still incredibly pleasant to listen to. I had a great time. (I also really liked Happily Ever After but I think I prefer Natewantstobattle's version; the rock cover really gives it that extra oomph!)
The DIAMONDS! I kinda don't know how to feel about Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond. I get why she did what she did; it was clear as glass the home life she was living wasn't good to her- but the way she did it certainly wasn't the cleanest. I like how complex her situation is and how Steven navigated it. I also like how the diamonds were presented- not good gems but complex enough that they're enjoyable. (Not to be bisexual on tumblr but Yellow Diamond....👀)
Overall this was a great time all around! I don't know what I'm gonna watch next (post future), my sister and I are thinking either Owl House or Amphibia, but y'all are welcome to leave suggestions! This was a much needed comfort experience during an admittedly crappy time.
(Also I'm almost done with Season 2 of Vinland Saga and y'all it's absolutely incredible but so freaking SAD- ooooo, I got feelings but I'll share them all when I finish the last four episodes)
This is your gentle reminder to sit down and indulge yourself in something comforting! Especially if things are being tough right now- you deserve to treat yourself :)

Hi! Are Lucien and Elain the only mates who can hear each other’s heartbeat? I don’t remember Feysand or Nessian mentioning something like that. I feel like this may be SJM pointing out how strong their bond is. Like Lucien tried to protect her even before she became High Fae and the bond snapped as soon as she was out of the cauldron.
I don't think the other characters shared anything quite like that but in Feysand and Nessian's defense, they were less connected to their inner emotions the way Elain and Lucien seem to be and Feyre and Nesta are pragmatic where Elain is a bit more romantic / dreamy.
Though I do think the "I can hear your heart" is pretty poignant on Elain's end because the first time she says it, it sounds different than the second time which is, "I can hear your heart beating through the stone".
It's just my interpretation but I think anti's aren't understanding the context of that text and what Lucien was responding to.
Now, no other fae except Elain seems to be able to hear another fae's heart beating through the halls of the HOW. Earlier, she comments to Feyre how she can hear all the way to the sea to which Feyre responds they are much too far for her to actually hear the sea. I don't think this is necessarily a Seer vision, I think Elain literally has enhanced hearing (which would go along with her being an owl shifter).
Elain and Lucien's bedrooms aren't next to each other so when she asks the question, "When I sleep, I can hear your heart beating through the stone, can you hear mine?" I think that's what Lucien is responding to. Because no, he can't literally hear someone's heart beat through the stone walls of a house and down the hall. Neither can Rhys, neither can Feyre. The Fae might have excellent hearing but only Elain seems to possess the ability to hear something from that far away. So I don't think people acting like Lucien and Elain are terrible mates just because he can't hear her heartbeat because with that question, he doesn't think it's metaphorical. He's answering her literal "can you hear my heart-beating through the stone?"
But the first time Elain says what she says, I think it's more metaphorical. She says, "I can hear your heart," she said quietly. Which I think is "I can hear what is in your heart, I can see what's in your heart" meaning she sees him. His sadness, his loss, his desire.
But again, when she asks Lucien her question, she doesn't phrase it in a way that asks him, "can you see who I am inside?" she phrases it like, "how good is your hearing?" and that's what he answers. But the reason I think she meant it differently is her response to what he said is, "No one ever does. No one ever looked - not really."
So I do think on Elain's end, this shows a pretty powerful connection between them because she is able to see the depth of him very early on. I think it was fairly early that Nesta sensed who Cassian was too but I don't think Feyre got the full picture of who Rhys was for awhile.
As far as the Cauldron scene, that's definitely a point in favor of how powerful their bond is. The fact that Lucien felt the need to reach out for her the very first time they had ever met AND he broke through a spell that was unbreakable for the others (with a power he wasn't even aware of having) in order to get to her is iconic.
And the fact that Elain seemed to begin her recovery within two days of Lucien's arrival at the HOW.
Maybe it's not that Elucien is all around the better, more powerful of the mating bonds so much as the fact that Elain and Lucien are more emotional and intuitive characters (more than Feyre, Rhys, Nesta, and Cassian were). Elain and Lucien might present themselves in a reserved and quiet manner but they are very deep thinkers and I think that almost opens their minds up to seeing one another in a way that the other couples weren't able to right from the start.

ok so I haaate when people make posts like “The most iconic wlw cartoon couples uwu” on like,,, owl house fangroups or whatever and it’s always lumity, catradora, rupphire, bubbline, etc. Those pairings are great and they did important things for sapphic and lgbt representation in cartoons, yes, but where. Is. Korrasami.
Catradora, lumity, these pairs were all revolutionary and sacrificed so much to get as far as they have but we wouldn’t have any of them without Korrasami. Please don’t forget about Korrasami.

[id: a halfbody drawing of luz and hunter from the owl house. they’re in costumes: luz is a bat with a big bat ears headband, little bat wings, and a dark shoulder-length cape with blood-like splatters on it. hunter is a cowboy, with a cowboy hat that has a couple holes in it, a red bandana, a dark vest, and a magenta long-sleeved shirt. they have their arms thrown over each other’s shoulders and are smiling at each other, luz especially widely, with her holding her pointer finger up. they are lit with an intense pink light. the background is light brown with a lighter jack-o-lantern pattern on it, with a gradient that makes them orange as it goes toward the right, the direction the pink light is coming from. end id]

Genuine question from a POC (whose race isn't represented in the Owl House)
I know a lot of people complain about the presence of white characters in the Owl House. They wish Amity was a POC, etc. This is valid, since we have yet to see an interracial couple in the show in which both characters are POC.
I also encourage people who draw those white characters as different races to keep doing so. (Some of that art is so beautiful btw)
But I've thought about it a lot and would those white characters have worked as POC in the show?
I mean there are 3 white families in the Owl House: the Blights, the Clawthornes, and the Wittebanes
Now obviously the Wittebanes have to be white because 1600s British family, Connecticut witch trials, etc.
But I think about racial stereotypes in media, and maybe it's a good thing that the Blights and Clawthornes were not POC?
The Blights: - Amity's relationship with her parents is extremely toxic - Her mom is abusive and her dad was negligent. - She's pressured to get good grades and uphold the family name - She was a bully for half of the first season.
As for the Clawthornes: - Eda is a criminal, and not just in a rebel way. She also commits petty theft and scams. - Gwen's entire character is a dig at anti-vaxxers - Lilith is always putting pressure on herself and looking for her mother's approval
I don't know, a lot of these sound like racial stereotypes that I have seen criticized a lot in other media.
(Also on a less serious note, if Eda wasn't white, we wouldn't have Wendie Malick voicing her and I honestly think she's perfect as Eda. That voice is iconic.)
Anyway, I guess my question is if any of these characters would have been good POC representation.

That whole school setting plus "non conformity" plus monsters/demons that represent psychological stuff just sounds like persona - so totally derivative, idk maybe there will be a twist that will make me eat my words but it seems a certain part of the manga/anime industry is stuck in a small bubble of posibilities...
Just about every entertainment industry ends up in these dead-ends.
For me personally, it doesn't change how much I enjoy the work.
Mashle is yet another comedic fighting anime. Yet, it is hilarious. (It just out-Gintama'ed Gintama at making fun of Fullmetal Alchemist.)
Blue Exorcist has been spinning its wheels in massive fight of students against supernatural forces. And yet, I want to see how this ends, because the fight has gotten that massive.
Laid-Back Camp is comfort food--it doesn't have to be the next brand new thing, it just has to be competently done and entertaining and fun and maybe even informative.
Heck, go outside of anime and manga: I personally think The Owl House and Amphibia can be derivative in parts--but they are still good, because they mixed and matched their influences (Soul Eater, witch stories, funny animals, sword and sorcery), were sincere in what message they wanted to communicate, had visual flair and an easily recognizable (if still derivative) visual style, and remain iconic, if just for breaking ground or at least putting a chip into it, especially in TV geared largely for children (wlw couples, nonbinary characters, gore).
And even when you try to move beyond what is derivative, or cliche, or commonplace, and try for something subversive or a deconstruction, that also can become old hat: Fire Force wanted a big twist, but after Madoka Magica, Yuki Yuna Is a Hero, Undead Unluck, and obviously Evangelion, it's hard to stand out.
It depends on style, message, and tone. If it's not a memorable style, who is going to remember it or enjoy it? If the message is empty, that is worse than if it was cliche or without sincerity. If the tone isn't clear, how will it impact the reader?
About the only recent work that strikes me as not being derivative is Spy x Family--and even that story is starting to repeat itself and its gags a bit too much.
(Meanwhile, Studio BONES is coming out with an anime whose plot is "two women are bounty hunters who may or may not be in the Cowboy Bebop universe, with Blade Runner techno-noir, with a Bebop-esque melancholic soundtrack, and mech designs by the person who did Patlabor"--and that is such a mish-mash of elements I could call "derivative" but which, from just a trailer, looks more interesting than other content.)
