Someone shared this tweet in a Discord server I'm in and I couldn't help but quote retweet with this, figured I might as well repost it here too x'D Imagine if instead of arriving in the demon realm, Philip arrived in the world of Gumball and ended up finding Caleb dating some overly cartoony version of Evelyn x'D

An old high school assignment ;w; (forgot this existed honestly hhakshsjs)
The prompt was to choose a famous contemporary painter from our country and create our own traditional artwork inspired by their style. I remember choosing Rodel Tapaya as an excuse to submit TOH fanart XD
This was shortly after the release of Eclipse Lake I think-

Belos - First Vicar of the Blood Coven
Centuries ago a mysterious figure revolutionized the Boiling Isles' approach to magic... for if the Titan was the source of all magic, and its blood a vessel of its power, why not indulge in the consumption of such holy medium and ascend witchhood in the attempt to become one with magic itself...? Such is the purpose of the Blood Coven: to study and transcend the limits of magic while defending the population from a new danger, the Scourge of Beasts.
"We are born of the blood..."
Tumblr media
The Coven accepts any witch in its ranks, both as ruthless hunters and huntresses and as researchers for the study, refinement and administration of the Holy Medium destined to the population of the Isles. Typical motiff of the Coven's highest members is the covering of once eyes, the reasons behind such self imposed blindness is debated among the public, sparking not few rumors... from a ritualistic symbol of superiority to the idea that helps the Coven members not fall into madness from the daily horrors they fight... in few and rare occasions a peculiar set of words rumors around: "...eyes on the inside..."
"...made witches by the blood..."
Tumblr media
The Scourge of Beasts
While monsters and dangerous creatures of all sort are far from new on the Boiling Isles, the Scourge of Beasts is a whole new deal.
A "sickness" that affect both the body and mind of one's being and twist them into a grotuesque and horrifying blood thirsty monster, rendering them a danger for anyone in their presence, a plague that takes place almost every night, and infillibly every night of full and dark moon.
The Blood Coven was the only one dealing with them through the institution of Hunters and their own Workshop in the early days, and still does for the most dangerous beasts, but through the years they hearten secondary Workshop to fight the Scourge on a more capillar level, leading to raids and hunt parties through all the Isles and quickly, the Nights of Hunt became a central aspect of Boiling Isles' culture, the blood of the Beasts a resource to harvest and refine into a myriad of concoctions, fine cocktails and other mediums, until blood, in all of its form, became another key component of the culture... a medium to be worshiped, consumed and shared... and the Hunt a chance for young and brave witches to prove themselves while keeping the Isles safe.
Very few know the true secret behind the Scourge of Beasts, of course... and often time, the revelation is enough to break someone's mind to the point of no return...
Tumblr media
"...undone by the blood... Fear the Titan Blood."
Keep going with the Owl House X Bloodborne AU, this time an examination on the Plague of Beasts and the Healing Church transposed on the Boiling Isles and the Emperor's Coven.

I am using baby Philip as a unit of measurement. Two baby Philips roughly equal one full size Belos. Luz is half a baby Philip shorter than Belos.

Rewatching TOH Season 1 with hindsight...
Rewatching the first season of Owl House with online friends made me realize something. It's pretty much the regular human world just with more fantastical elements, particular with Hexside. Sure it's more authoritarian, but it felt like a world that was independently founded by witch culture, including the whole Coven system.
Belos at first fits into the world perfectly, back when he was considered an actual witch. Getting visions from the Titan, using them to justify his rule, and then planning on mass conversion and supposedly invading the Human Realm in the name of witch imperialism. He's a generic cult leader but he fits well with the theme.
Until you incorporate Philip Wittebane into the equation. Philip Wittebane is a very different character. He is not a cult leader. He is a zealous witch hunter driven by revenge. Revenge against all witches. Such a character would not have come up with such an elaborate plan to kill all the witches with a convoluted plot that takes 400 years to complete, requires him to pretend to be a witch, and requires the witches to blindly trust him. He would have simply amass an army of loyal soldiers that obey him to massacre the witches. And these soldiers would have been his fellow witch hunters or clones of his witch hunters that share his hatred for witches. Genocidal hatred.
This is the paradox of Belos' character. He's far more interesting as Philip Wittebane in that you want to know more about his backstory and why he went from this adorable kid to a lunatic witch killer. But if you ignore that backstory and just focus Belos in terms of present day context, he's a confusing mess of a villain that gives off different, unintended messages.
He's a Puritan yet somehow is respectful of LGBT, blacks, and women in the Boiling Isles despite already forcing their society to convert to the Coven System. He hates all witches and loves humans, yet his entire scheme in Boiling Isles relies on a covoluted plan that would take centuries to complete (and requires him to dress up as a witch) rather than the simple "build the door portal" and rally the witch hunters to a genocidal war against witches. He's the reason why the Boiling Isles went from a utopia to a jackass place, yet it's not really different from the regular human world (and if anything, it's actually better) and thus, it feels more real than the "utopian" past.
Honestly, Belos and Philip should have been two separate characters on opposite sides, with Belos' rise to power being a response to Philip's fanatical attacks on witch societies. Imagine what kind of conflict and grey area would that be for the audience. Heck, what if Belos was actually Caleb and Caleb, in an attempt to defend witches from his brother, became sort of a Magneto tyrant who hates all of humanity and that's why he wants to invade the Human Realm.
And imagine how Luz has to resolve the conflict that cannot be easily resolved.

An interesting thing I noticed on a rewatch of season 2. When asked about why he's hunting the selkidomus, Hunter says very plainly:
Tumblr media
"the Emperor ordered me to slay one. I'm just following orders."
Simple, honest, to the point.
However, in Hunting Palisman, when Luz asks why he's stealing palisman, he avoids the question, responding:
Tumblr media
"[Frankly]... You should be be more concerned about yourself."
I think there's a lot of possible explanations for this, but to me it feels like a moment of Hunter being defensive about Belos's curse, reticent about what he says. With the selkidomus, it wasn't personal, so he didn't mind being frank, but with the truth about what Belos does with palisman, something presumably kept pretty secret, he deflects.
Of course, it doesn't matter because Luz already knows, but still, it's very smoothly done.
