Headcanon: Steven Grant and Halloween
Happy October!! I wanted to write something fanfic related for one of my favorite holidays. This is my first fanfic in a few years. I want to explore more of my favorite characters. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Steven Grant is an unusual person when it comes to Halloween.
He doesn’t hate Halloween, but he does not enjoy it as much as you do.
When you two started dating, you briefly mentioned that you were a horror fan, but didn’t mention how big of a fan you were of horror and Halloween.
He does not like to get scared but likes when you suggest to watch horror films with him considering it is that time of year.
Note: He is that person that will watch half of The Exorcist before he gets scared and wants to watch Hocus Pocus.
Jake laughs that he couldn’t get through it.
Marc reminds them both that they couldn’t get through Poltergeist when they were much younger.
Jake reminds both of them that they couldn’t even do the Saw franchise this year.
He watches you look through potential costume ideas with him for Halloween costumes at Spirit Halloween or those related Halloween stores.
He wants to do a Poe Dameron or Han Solo costume but he decides to dress up as the Eleventh Doctor instead.
Jake likes the Fez; Marc hates it.
You dress up as Amy or Clara (depending on your mood).
He likes reading Stephen King novels just to get him in the mood of Halloween.
You laugh at his positioning on the couch as he reads more intense scenes.
His favorite is Carrie and The Shining.
He thinks that Marc would like the movie. Jake likes the violence of horror. Marc does not really care.
He drinks some earl gray tea while reading as he puts a vinyl record playing some mood music in the background.
Steven gets scared when you put on a prop skeleton in the coat closet.
“Babe, I love you. Stop scaring Greg. He is not going to hurt you.”
“YOU NAMED IT GREG?!”
After Halloween, Steven will dress it up in different outfits and put it around the house.
Marc laughs. Jake rolls his eyes, questioning why Steven is a big scaredy cat.

CalmWriMo Day 25
[11/25/2023]
Update!
WOOOOO! Less than a week left now! Had a wonderfully calm day where I could just sit around and not do much today. So that was nice. (^v^) Also had some ideas of stuff I'd like to do in the future. So that's exciting. I have a couple of secret projects that I've started that not just consumed, but exceeded my writing time. Still working out how they'll be exactly, but I'm excited and excited=motivation for me so d(^V^)b Is nice!
Progress:
2 Hour Writing Goal: ✅ [smashed this one out of the park today lol (>v<)]
Blurb: [see below]
Self Care:
Food: ✅
Hydration: ✅
Sleep: ✅
Reading: ✅
Blurb: Winter Rose Cafe 482
Winter Rose Cafes are a popular franchise locations across Neocago and other remaining cities across the American northeast. They are famed for the creation of artificial substitute to caffeine that carried them from a single small street corner cafe to the massive corporation it is now. Generally any Winter Rose location serves drinks, light meals, and sweet deserts. Primarily focusing on coffee and tea imitation products. These cafes are known to be a relaxing environment overall with reasonable prices.
A particularly unassuming Winter Rose Cafe, store #482, is located roughly on the edge of the Midcity and Undercity. Normally this would be a tedious and nerve racking location for any franchise owner and their staff. Normally. Through a stroke of luck, 482 and roughly a block radius around it is actually one of the safest places across the Undercity. It so happens to be near the halfway point between a couple of clubs popular with runners, only a block away from a small security firm office, and directly on the border of two warring gangs. Each something that should by all means make this place horribly dangerous. If not for the fact that all these groups have an unspoken truce around the sacred grounds of 482. A truce that if anyone broke, would swiftly be met by an angered and ridiculously heavily armed coalition of caffeine starved vengeance. Naturally no one dares becoming that common enemy so 482 has never had any problems.
It probably helps that this is the only source of caffeine for quite some ways away...
Bonus character fun fact: This is the place that Doc would frequently bring Kori while she was recovering from the immediate effects from her backstory induced trauma. He brought her here because it is a safe place and typically free from the random sounds of gunfire in at least a block radius around the cafe. Also it's where Nat bought the birthday cupcake for Kori. So of course it's Kori's favorite place in general.
[This is mostly just a small location that I made awhile ago to be a common location between stories for characters visit. Also just find it to be a fun place in general, a little light in the dark, lol (^.^). Something about the "no body messes with the guy who pours the drinks" sort of trope is just nice as well. If I ever make a game it will totally be here. Anyways and always, hope you had a lovely day, peace (^.^)v]

Did you get enough rest last night?  Yeah, I actually slept really well last night. Like, the best I've slept in weeks.
What was the last thing that kept you awake?  It was just a bit of underlying worry about Simba - he was pretty sick over the weekend and didn't eat properly for about four days. He's tiny as it is so it was extra worrying. He's fine now though, thank God.
If you have pets, do they sleep in your bedroom at night?  The dog does, the cats all have the run of downstairs, otherwise they're up and playing at 5am lol.
Can you sleep with background noise or does it keep you up?  I find a fan or something really comforting, but I can't fall asleep if people are talking or anything like that.
Do you ever take naps? Do you take long naps or little power naps?  I had a nap last week when I got Simba back from his first vet visit - we slept for ages hahah. But generally I don't really take naps.
What helps when you have trouble sleeping?  Herbal sleeping tablets, warm milk and reading random shit on Reddit.
Who was the last person to cook you a meal? What did they make?  I have no idea. Probably my mum and that was back in May lol. I think we had steak or lamb? I can't remember which. Steak I think.
Who was the last person you cooked a meal for? What did you make?  Day-to-day I just cook for myself as Mike and I have such different diets. I did cook us a roast last Easter I think? though.
Who is your female celeb crush? (If applicable)  Amanda Seyfried.
Who is your male celeb crush? (If applicable)  Johnny Depp. Bradley Jayden.
Tell me about an interesting article you’ve read recently.  It wasn't really an article. but a random TikTok theory that all Shoezone stores are a front for money laundering lol. Clearly nonsense but the reasoning was good.
Do you have a favorite Marvel character?  No.
Favorite DC character?  ...
Do you read comic books?  Nope.
Has a horror film ever actually scared you? Which one(s)?  The Others - but I was only about 11 when I watched it.
What was the last horror movie you saw? I have no idea, I'm not really into horror movies.
What was the first horror movie you remember seeing? What did you think of it?  The Omen, I think. It was okay, from what I can remember.
Name a few historical figures you find interesting. Why?  Elizabeth I, Henry VIII - just because I always found that period of history to be pretty interesting when I studied it in school.
What is your favorite historical film and why?  I'm not really into historical films.
Do you usually enjoy historical films?  No.
Name a sequel film (any franchise) you like better than the first film. Why is that?  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - it's the first one that's actually a bit dark and interesting.
Which do you find most interesting: Greek, Roman, or Norse mythology? Why?  I'm really not interested in any kind of mythology.
Which tale from whichever mythology you listed above do you find most interesting?  I'm sure I took this survey recently.
Do you collect anything? What was the last item you added to that collection?  Wax melts.
Do you have any houseplants?  No.
How do you like your tea?  Milk and two sugars, but I don't really drink much tea.
Who is your favorite Muppet?  The muppets annoy me. I really don't get the appeal of them.
What is your favorite type of bird?  Penguins. < Yes. <--- yep!
Which streaming platform do you use the most, if any?  Spotify.
What is a skill or useful piece of knowledge you wish you’d learned sooner?  Nothing specific is coming to mind right now.
What is your favorite vampire movie?  Bleh, I'm not really into vampires.
Your favorite fictional couple?  Chandler & Monica.
Do you have a favorite historical couple?  No.
Have you received any good news recently?  Uh, nothing specific is coming to mind.
Have you learned anything new recently?  Probably, but I can guess it's not anything exciting.

NEW THIS MORNING: Chowking opens 1st Drive-Thru store in the north of Daro [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DUMAGUETE, NEGROS ORIENTAL -- Filipino-Chinese restaurant known as Chowking opens its first drive-thru on any vehicles in the north city of National Highway, Brgy. Daro, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. Fresh n' Famous Foods (FNFF), who is a subsidiary of Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) fully inaugurate the said store franchise to serve Dumagueteños and Negrosanons to enjoy your favorites of Chinese and Pinoy food. Customers are in full house to serve the food in the morning hours.
Taiwanese milk tea brand 'Milksha' integrates with Chowking in 2021, which is now available for the first time in Dumaguete. Per Manila Bulletin's report that the JFC acquires the said milk tea shop for Chowking, they are using natural and fresh ingredients, without any preservatives or chemical additives. The milk tea company prides itself in using fresh, high quality milk as a base for its beverages in Taiwan. Milksha expands to 250 outlets worldwide including our country's nation, the Philippines. Chowking was started in late mid-March 1985, a year before the People Power Revolution and the aftermath between the Escalante Massacre in Negros Occidental & Martial Law in the mid-80's line.
Tumblr media
We spoke with one of the Female cashiers in a pre-recorded interview of OneNETnews, the Chowking Drive-Thru store in Dumaguete starts at 7am (January 30th, 2023 -- Dumaguete local time). She tells us on our news team, the said store opens 24 hours a day since the Coronavirus Disease-19 (CoViD-19) Pandemic was partially and unofficially lifted in Negros Oriental. The main regional store of Chowking at Perdices Street fronting Jollibee lacks of space without a drive-thru. FNFF implements their ideas and finishes the construction deal before the actual opening. Expect good food and service when ordering from a menu, along with their innovative payment options in the long run.
Tumblr media
As the country's #1 Chinese fast food restaurant, the Negrosanon people expand and satisfy your cravings if you're in a hurry inside the drive-thru area.
You can order your favorites online at the Chowking Delivery website, on the mobile app via GrabFood and FoodPanda, or take-out in the Drive-Thru at Chowking North Road.
SPECIAL THANKS to Chowking for sponsoring our Internet News Media of OneNETnews.

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning fellow coffee and tea drinkers! Grab a cup, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.☕️
Tumblr media
CNN: “Robbie Coltrane, the actor who brought to life the lovable gamekeeper Hagrid in the Harry Potter film franchise, died on Friday, according to his agent, Scott Henderson. He was 72.”
This is so heartbreaking. Our beloved Hagrid is gone. Mr. Coletrane, of course, appeared in many other films but he will always be Hagrid to me.
RIP 💔
Sketch - Via LinkedIn: “Today is a very tough day for everyone at Sketch. In response to challenging market conditions and with a desire to keep our product-first strategy, we’ve taken the difficult decision to reduce our team by just over 80 people. This will mostly impact Operations and Marketing, who have done great work in the recent weeks and months. Our Product team remains well-equipped, with a core team continuing to drive things forward.”
This is a real bummer to see. In my mind Sketch is a prime example of a modern Mac application done right. I know many designers who use it daily. To see such a reduction in workforce makes your heart sink. All those people looking for work toward the end of the year.
On the flip side there are now many very qualified Mac and iOS developers on the market. Go find one and hire them.
Also, why in the world wouldn’t you put this on the company blog or as a standalone news announcement on your own website?
Fortune: “Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna…things that took five billion years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread. My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral.”
William Shatner is an American Treasure. I don’t know what more say, other thank this: We must protect our planet. It’s the only place that can sustain life we’re aware of. Even if we found another planet it would be impossible to reach.
BREAKING: WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) – Jury says Alex Jones should pay $965 million to people who suffered from his lies about the Sandy Hook school massacre.
— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) October 12, 2022
It couldn’t have happened to a better man. Now, get this jerk off the airwaves.
Yahoo! News: “The House select committee held its 10th and possibly final public hearing on Thursday, presenting new evidence stemming from its 15-month investigation into the events surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.”
Well, well, well, TFG will finally get his subpoena. Of course he’ll worm his way out of it, like he always does. Here’s hoping the Justice Department gets him.
Welp… that 5-minute montage the Jan 6 committee just played leads me to the conclusion that America did have a president on January 6th. Her name was Nancy Pelosi.
— Joy-Ann (Pro-Democracy) Reid 😷 (@JoyAnnReid) October 13, 2022
CNN: “Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd delighted “Back to the Future” fans when they were reunited at the weekend, 37 years after the release of the sci-fi comedy.”
I love this film series. My favorite episode is the third and final installment. They’re all very good of course but the third one is best.
Axios: “Google has approved Donald Trump’s Twitter-like social media app Truth Social for distribution in the Google Play Store, Axios has learned.”
This company is doomed to failure. Besides, if Musk gets his hands on Twitter, which is highly likely, TFG will be allowed back on to continue his reign of terror unabated. That sucks.
Fast Company: “With 15,000 locations across the U.S., the coffee chain is betting it can convince electric vehicle owners that it’s the perfect place to charge up. (Literally!)”
Starbucks has some much bigger fish to fry with workers form unions and their attempts to bust those unions but this is an interesting idea.
I was going to question why a company like McDonalds wasn’t interested in doing something like this but Starbucks is definitely a more high end brand. It’s a place folks spend “disposable” income.
With one or two exceptions, I simply don't care about web sites that don't publish RSS feeds. RSS via the indispensible @NetNewsWire is how I stay abreast of the *vast* majority of web sites with content I care about. https://t.co/sluWtnoB3J
— Peter Cohen (@flargh) October 14, 2022
That’s right Peter! You tell ‘em!
Hey! Did you know I developed a feed reader for iOS called Stream? That’s right, I did, no, really, I did! It’s free in the App Store but you’re welcome to leave a tip. 😄

#New video games 2017 images update#
#New video games 2017 images full#
#New video games 2017 images Ps4#
Just when players didn’t think 2017 could have a better start for video games, it got even better.
#New video games 2017 images full#
Here’s our full list of the best video games that released in February 2017. If you missed out on any of February 2017’s best video games, do yourself a favor and pick ’em up. Should she go to band practice, smash some stuff up in the woods with her friend, or head to the mall with another? With a charming, eccentric cast of characters and some superb writing to boot, Night in the Woods is one of the best indie video games you’ll play in 2017. Taking control of college dropout cat Mae Borowski, players decide what she does with her day. Combine that with some excellent level design that keeps rewarding you with fresh and exciting things to see and do and you’ve got one of the finest Action RPGs in quite some time.įebruary 2017 also brought one of the most laidback releases in the form of Night in the Woods. Players will need to master combos, constantly hunt out the best gear, and utilize a variety of combat stances to exploit their opponents’ weaknesses. If fighting giant robot animals isn’t your cup of tea (if that’s even possible), then PS4 exclusive Nioh also released to offer an incredibly challenging experience.
#New video games 2017 images Ps4#
If you’ve got a PS4 and haven’t picked it up yet, do it. However, what makes Horizon Zero Dawn truly shine is its combat which prioritizes smooth and strategic play over huge explosions or simply bombarding your enemies into the ground. Players assume the role of Aloy as they explore this post-post-apocalyptic world filled with towering animal machines. Whether you were looking for a charming indie, or a triple-A blockbuster, there was a bunch of new releases to accommodate everyone.Īrguably the best of the new releases to hit stores in February 2017 was Horizon Zero Dawn. Moving on from Killzone’s linear gray worlds, Guerrilla Games has created a visually stunning world that’s teeming with things to see and do. When it came to video games, February 2017 truly spoiled players.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
Our best new video game releases for January 2017 are all listed below. Just as you’d expect from a game about Yakuza members. Focusing on Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, Yakuza 0 tells a story of warring families, betrayal, and plenty of drama. Despite not being hyped on the scale of Resident Evil 7 or Horizon Zero Dawn, Yakuza 0 still delivered an excellent prequel story for the long-running series. They’re completely insane and have plenty of twisted plans if they manage to get their hands on you.Įlsewhere in January, players got one of the less celebrated releases of 2017 in Yakuza 0. Of course, with this being a Resident Evil title, the Bakers aren’t just some friendly deep-south family. Players assume the role of Ethan, a young man who’s come to rescue his long-missing wife from the Baker Estate. January 2017 was all about Resident Evil 7, which adopted a first-person perspective while retaining the most classic qualities of the franchise. Not only did players get the long-awaited return of Kat in Gravity Rush 2, but players also got one of the best horror video games in recent years. The year kicked off with a bunch of new releases that turned out rather well. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.January may have been a quiet month for video games in the past, but 2017 had different ideas. January Resident Evil 7: Biohazard GameĪtelier Shallie Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Seaĭragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King You can also reference our feature on the game release dates of 2016.
#New video games 2017 images update#
To help you keep track of everything coming out, we've compiled the release dates of all the biggest games confirmed to come out in 2017 so far.Ĭheck them all out below, and be sure to revisit this page often as we update it with release date changes or release dates for newly announced games coming this year. This year is packed with some of the biggest new games to play, including heavy hitters like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Persona 5, and much more.

troubled outsiders | intro - jjk
| summary | -  how you two end up pining for each other.
warnings: none :)
content: idol!jungkook x student!oc, friends to lovers (because it’s THE superior trope okurrrt), jungkook is quiet and shy but a social butterfly when needed (and when it comes to oc but you’re not supposed to know that yet), oc is both a badass and a socially akward queen, she has TWO friends and only because one is dating the other (like... same), the Lee Charyeong is her bestie, oc works at bighit and feels like everyone either fears her or hates her, author nim is a crackhead and has no plot planned for this series whatsoever (doesn’t know if she’ll keep this up, we’ll see).
words: 1.93 k
His presence was overwhelming, to say the least. Even if he were surrounded by six hundred other equally handsome men, somehow, to you (and the majority of the female population, at that point) he was as captivating and magnetic as they come. Jeon Jungkook didn't pay no mind to no one, but sure as hell everyone became hyper aware of his existence and essence in time. And that didn’t exclude you.
Yet, as nonchalant and indifferent as the man could be perceived, in reality he was more considerate and friendly than the aura he exuded. You knew this because working in the same company had to teach a thing or two about the people who literally carried said company and the whole industry at some point, still you barely knew four or three people, including your assistant and Jungkook, whom you had met once.
The opportunity of working at the company had come to you out of the blue, quite literally, you were attempting to send one of your assignments in when an email appeared in your notifications during your sailor moon study break.
HYBE Entertainment
We’re glad to inform you that you’re being recruited for the position of Logistics Manager in one of our sub companies, BIGHIT Entertainment. We’ve thoroughly looked through the CV you’ve submitted and are very interested in your capabilities and what you can contribute to our organization. One of our other managers will gladly meet you on a day you can both agree on. Make sure to answer this email to get more details about your interview.
“Nani!? THE FUCK?” sure as hell that your eyes and cognitive functions were deceiving you (ADHD) you went over the text a little over three times in a row before the message settled in your mind. This was sus.
Before even considering a reply you made a quick call. “Fucking Lee Chaeryeong” you spat on your end of the line. “You did this, didn’t you?”.
Her silence was more than enough to have you cursing her under your breath. “I don’t know what exactly you’re talking about but it most likely was me. Does it have to do with a sex toy in particular?”
“No” you denied almost monotonously, guessing the pile of boxes in the corner of your room with her names on them was what she referred to. “Does anything come to mind if i mention BIGHIT FUCKING ENTERTAINMENT?”
It was her. All those conversations during the summer about how badly you wanted to work in the entertainment business as marketing staff of some sort had their effect on your friend, who, despite all your excuses and denials, knew you better than you and your mom combined did, and because of this, was sure as hell you were not making a move towards that goal whatsoever. So, being the boss bitch she was, she took matters into her own hands, was what she explained.
You concluded that was the reason you had reached a point in your life where you had more experience than most recently graduated kids in your field, because Chaeryeong had you moving every summer break. You had been the manager of a coffee franchise and convenience store during you junior and senior years, and also figured a way to improve the marketing management strategy of a fucking restaurant while at it. Not to toot your own horn, but you were kind of cool.
Or not. “I hope this job satisfies your workaholic ass for once, I’m running out of ideas”. Chaeryeong spat before hanging up.
Sure as hell it would.
On friday afternoon, you made your way to the HYBE INSIGHT building and introduced yourself to your recruiters who promised to give you a call at some point. “It went fine” you told Chaeryeong once you were in your car. And it was the truth, however you weren’t so sure if they would actually hire you at some point since well, you were a girl in a male dominated industry and, in your opinion, there were always better people than you. “Wanna go grab coffee?”
“I want to. But, I have practice today. I’m actually on my way there. Please avoid driving through Hongdae today, this shit’s packed.” You sighed and thanked her for the heads up. You missed your friend, badly. You hadn’t seen each other in three weeks, and you didn’t even live so far away from each other (you did, but it had been worse before). You two had very agitated lives to say the least. Chaeryeong was a kpop group member, and well, you were jumping from job to job and getting your phD in Business Management at the same time. It was hard to find moments to spare together during some periods of the year, but you guess the anticipation made your encounters better.
“Talk about anticipation” you slammed your forehead against your desk, taking a breather after such an anxiety packed situation. Short story: you got the job (for some fucking reason). And you had gone through a whole week of expectancy and anguish. Not getting that job would have broken your heart, and ego at the same time.
You guessed the law of attraction tactics Chaeryeong had taught you had sorted their effect and were what led you to your current position in life.
“Miss _____, your presentation’s ready” your work assistant gave you a comforting pat in the back as she took a seat somewhere next to you. You were nervous, shitless. It was your fifth week at the job, and being the proactive woman you were, you had collected lots of data in order to come up with a resources management plan.
It was a Thursday afternoon, and more than a hundred people sat in front of you, waiting for your speech. Including him, who you’d once bumped into accidentally during one of your data recollections runs inside the building.
You hated having the need to impress others yet, hence your anxious behaviour. But this was a decisive moment in regards to your validation in your new job and how you’d continue to be perceived during your work stance (no reason to panic at all)… you needed to get it together.
“I think I just pissed off a bunch of old men right now,” you told your assistant right after you got off stage. “I need a bathroom break”. Linh gave you a reassuring smile, one she always had plastered on her face.
“Take as long as you need to. I’ll give you a call once the rest are done”.
The commute to the bathroom was unnecessarily complicated in your opinion. You had spent a little over a month rushing through the hallways of the building and you swore every single day your spatial orientation got a bit more fucked up. There was no way there wasn’t a single bathroom on the floor you were in, that would just be atrocious. “It’s not completed yet” someone said beside you as you stared at the half empty map the company had projected on a wall next to the elevators. “Where do you need to go?”
Kim Taehyung of all people in the world was talking to your ugly and unworthy ass. Your breath caught in your throat and after staring for at least five seconds your body finally reacted to your orders. “Oh, um… the bathroom. I’ve been looking for it for a good ten minutes” you explained with a nervous laugh.
“Trust me, I get it. I still get lost over here” he smiled gently. “It’s in the hallway in the middle of the next hallway”
You laughed at his very ambiguous explanation. “Thank you” you bowed your head and made your way to said destination.
It was in the hallway to your left, not your right, and it took you a while to figure out that new piece of information. Once you were staring at yourself in the mirror, you realized that you looked considerably tired and exhausted from all the social interaction you had undergone throughout the day. You were used to the side stares and whispering you’d get whenever you entered a room at that point, but some days you just wished you could get a break from them. After all, it wasn’t your fault you didn’t look Korean at all, and that you also didn’t fit the stereotype of a foreigner.
You got that from your mom, both the non Korean features and social fatigue. But that wasn’t even the problem most of the time, it was your friendly and smart nature which she had also passed onto you. Some would consider it a blessing, but to you it was a burden, like a clear glass that shielded you from introducing yourself into other people’s realities. You had few friends and people to trust, but in your everyday life you had to deal with the pressure of standing out too much and that came with a lot of negative energy from others. You sigh as you spray your favorite fragrance on yourself. You could be feeling like shit, but no one will ever catch you slipping.
But that excluded him apparently. You hadn’t noticed that on the other side of the hallway was the men’s bathroom and the realization hit you as you were calmly getting some tea from the vending machine. “Good afternoon” the man greeted you as he made his way out the hallway, but stopped in his tracks right after he noticed you. “_____! Hi” he smiled at you and you wanted to die, suddenly forgetting what you were ordering in the first place.
“H-hi Jungkook” You smiled back, poorly attempting to put your wallet back into your backpack.
“Need help there?” he noticed your agitated state and held your bag for you. He smelled just as heavenly as you had expected, somewhat between big dick energy and flowers. Oh, and he also remained as kind and polite as you remembered him.
Seeming as if he wasn’t planning on continuing his path to wherever he was heading to in the first place, he stood quietly by your side, waiting for you to be done with your deal. “How have you been?” you break the ice for him.
Quickly, you grab your tea and start walking back to the auditorium together, unaware of your surroundings or the suspicions that could arise. “Busy, but very good. How have you been? I saw your presentation earlier… I wish I understood half of what you said but you still sounded amazing”.
And you would never admit it out loud, but you were positive you were blushing (and falling in love too - platonically, of course). “Oh god, you think so? I basically told them they’ve been doing things wrong all along so maybe you’re the only one who’s appreciative of my work” you handed him the second can of iced tea you bought without him noticing. You swear his eyes lit up like stars in the night sky. “Payback for the other day” you smile at him.
The first time you two had crossed paths you didn’t look nearly as glamorous as you did now. In fact, you looked incredibly disturbed and in pain, carrying a huge pile of paperwork in your hands. But as soon as sweet Jungkook noticed your state, he offered you a hand and somehow ended up helping through your multiple data collecting trips that afternoon. It was a nice day.
“Anytime” he took the can in his hands with a shy look on his face. “Unless I’m practicing, you know…” you look down at his feet, with huge black boots engulfing them, and you smile due to their contrast with his personality. “Here, i’ll give you my number so you can call me whenever you need to put all those papers back. Hopefully I’ll be around” he added as he pulled his phone from his back pocket.
Way to get a girl’s number, my god.

How You Met: Rats in the House of the Dead + DOA Style
***SPOILER ALERT*** Manga spoilers
A/N: Back at it again! Spoiler alert for this one, since it contains manga-only characters. Also, I will be including the last two mentioned members of the DOA in separate editions since one of them thematically is a bit more difficult to write for and the other one will fall into a different group for their edition. I mashed the Rats and the DOA together because neither had very many characters. I also didn't include Pushkin since we don't get much of his story, although if there is anyone particularly interested in him, I could write him in the extras. More brief author's notes under the cut for those who don't mind spoilers.
Spoiler A/N: Bram Stoker will likely be included in the extras since I will have to write it for him being pre-impailed, so I'm thinking something victorian or gothic stylistically. "Kamui" will be included in the Hunting Dogs edition for obvious reasons, so he does not appear in this one. So, here we go?
Fyodor: The top shelf. Of course that's where the canned peas you needed were. You'd been staring down the cans for at least 5 minutes now, wrestling with your pride about whether or not you should climb the shelf in the supermarket. Your eyes began to glaze over in thought, but you were brought out of it by a low hum to your right. A tall, pale man stood there beside you. He must have been watching for a good few minutes, too. The second he saw your eyes turn to his direction, he put on a honey-sweet smile and it had to have been the fakest one you'd ever seen. Your eyes narrowed as his slender arm moved past you to reach up and grab the can for you. Except... he put it in his cart and began to walk away, leaving you incredulous. Just then, he stopped, tilting his head to look over his shoulder at you. A devilish smirk had taken root on his face.
"Oh my, did you need one, too?"
Ivan: The cafe you frequented was crowded during the lunch-time rush, but you were lucky to have gotten there early, finding a nice window seat. You'd been sipping your tea, eyes focused dreamily on the book in front of you. The romantic fantasy between two strangers, the air of mystery as lovers meet. The book was all that you could focus on to drown out the onslaught of customers and chatter around you. Suddenly there was a slight shadow blocking the light from the cafe. You looked up, seeing a slender man with long, angelic locks and the most serene expression of joy on his face. Your eyes scanned the porcelain cup on his hand, noticing the tag for the tea was the same as yours. When his pale lips opened to speak, the most pleasant voice rang through.
"Excuse me, but is this seat taken? There don't seem to be many open spots at this time of day."
Mushitaro: You were at the bookstore, perusing the shelves half-heartedly. You'd been bored at work and your colleague had mentioned picking up reading as a hobby. Except you had no idea where to start. You thought that maybe a mystery would keep you entertained but, beyond that, you were clueless. You saw a well dressed man in a suit with slicked hair sheepishly glancing through the mystery section, while carrying what looked like an occult-based novel. You must have looked as out-of-place as you felt, since his eyes kept wandering from the shelves back to you. You quickly snatched a random book from the shelf and turned to go check out. The man grabbed a book from an author named Yokomizo and haughtily replaced the one you had taken. He sighed dramatically, rolling his eyes in exasperation.
"If you insist on reading a mystery, you should at least make sure it is one of quality."
Sigma: You'd heard about the sky casino from the old lady at your grocery store a few days ago and thought that it might be a fun weekend trip with a few friends. So, here you were getting settled into your room before heading out to test your luck. You were wandering through the hallways for at least 10 minutes before you realized you were thoroughly lost. Your friends had already headed out together as you said you would stay behind to unpack some things. You wished you had gone with them when you had the chance. You hastened your pace as you looked around each corner for any indicator of where you should go. You quickly turned into another hallway, crashing headfirst into what may just be the most gorgeous man you'd ever seen. Your face flushed scarlet as you began an incoherent stream of "I'm sorry"s. He held his hands up to placate you, a warm smile on his face, framed by his silver and lilac hair.
"Don't worry at all. I should be the one apologizing. After all, I'm the manager. It's my job to make sure everyone is alright and here I am bumping into a customer."
Nikolai: You had just gotten done viewing the latest installment in the SAW horror movie franchise. You were jittery as you exited theater number 13. All the excitement had your nerves on fire. You enjoyed watching horror movies, but sometimes you wished your friends would agree to come with you. You threw your empty popcorn container in the trash can. Standing next to it was a super lifelike jester mannequin. It must have been, since it didn't move even a centimeter and the expression never changed. You were admiring how well made it was. It must be for a new movie coming out and you wondered what kind of movie it would be. But, it suddenly moved out of position and grabbed you, the white braid swaying behind the tall man as he smiled a maniacal grin. He let out a laugh similar to the doll jigsaw uses.
"I want to play a game!"
~After Note: You ran screaming as the man chased after you. You heard him apologizing profusely as he caught up behind you. You stopped to hear the man out as he explained that he had just wanted to get the attention of such a cute human bean. You couldn't stay mad as he bowed his head in apology with a playful wink and a mischievous smile.~

Can I get a modern AU Levi scenario where reader and Levi are coworkers and Erwin and Hanji are trying to set them up knowing Levi has a crush on reader?
I really like ur stories btw!! <3
AN:  Thank you so much--I’m glad you like them!!
So...I have never done a coffee shop AU...now is THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY.  This occurred to me when I sat there after reading this trying to figure out what job they shared.  So yes, I’m going cliché for this one because I can’t resist the opportunity to FINALLY DO IT!!!  Also, in a way, its also Levi finally getting his tea shop (Cries softly behind the laptop screen).
Okay, quick rundown of who does what and where so I don’t have to spend time on it in the fic:  Levi--Owner of the coffee shop--though he also works there.  he doesn’t deal with the people, though, just makes the drinks, namely the teas.  Erwin--Business Partner, mainly the one who made the money work to get the store open and running.  He also works in the back in the little bakery/kitchen he convinced Levi to incorporate so it wasn’t just drinks and there was something to eat as well.  Hange--Cashier.  She’s the bubbly chatty on that people get to interact with and deal with.  Occasionally helps with the drinks if its busy and she has a moment.  You--Pick Up Counter/Waitress and Drinks.  You get people their drinks, the second face they see/person they deal with, and you help Levi with the drinks, leaving the teas to him since its his preference and specialty and making whatever else is needed.
Also I don’t know why this ended up feeling like a sitcom...and how we ended up seeing more from Hange and Erwin than Levi and Reader XD
Fanfic One-Shot Request is below the cut.
~*~The Perfect Blend~*~
“They work so well together.”
“I have yet to find a flaw--it’s like perfect harmony.  It’s ridiculous and it makes me so jealous.”
“Well there is one flaw.”
“You mean the fact that he hasn’t--?”
“Mhm.”
“Well, I’m running out of ideas of how to fix that, and yours are just getting crazier and crazier.”
“I still suggest we lock them in the back cooler until they can work things out.  Maybe we’ll get lucky and for warmth, they’ll--”
“Oi!  Eyebrows!  Shitty Glasses!  The morning rush is going to start any minute now--stop gossiping and get back to work!  Erwin, don’t you have another batch of scones still in the oven in the back?  Hange--you still haven’t fixed the menu for the new week, get on that!  Now!”
Erwin sighed and let out a soft ‘stubborn man’ before he disappeared into the back to make sure the scones were all right.  Hange, however, pouted in the face of Levi’s knowing glare.
“Aww, Levi, come on, loosen up a bit!  It’s a Tuesday, it’ll probably be really q--”
“AH!  Don’t you dare!” you suddenly shouted at her, running through the back room door with a bag of espresso beans in on arm and a box of coffee cup sleeves tucked under the other.  “The last time you said the Q word, we had to stay three hours late closing up and cleaning because we didn’t get enough time to breathe, let alone keep the place from turning into a disaster!”
Hange huffed.  “That’s just a bunch of superstitious nonsense.  Saying a word doesn’t effect whether or not we have a busy day.”
“Speak for yourself--jinxes are a thing,” you returned, getting up in front of the coffee machine and filling up the espresso side.  “Also, Levi, we’re out of decaf beans.  Well, almost--what’s in the dispenser up here is the last of it.”
“What?  I thought there were at least three more bags back there,” Levi said with a frown, turning away from filling his tea assortment up front to look at you with a spark of concern.  You didn’t get a lot of decaf orders, but orders were also fairly unpredictable--now that you didn’t have any more, today could be the day for a rash of decaf coffee orders.
“Well, I didn’t see any.  I looked everywhere they might be, so unless someone moved it somewhere it shouldn’t be...”
Levi sighed, following you into the back to help see if the two of you could find the missing bags of beans.  Once they disappeared from sight, Erwin stuck his head out the little window into the kitchen for communication between the front and back, one of the sliding doors in the back of the glass display cases for the baked goods open with a tray of scones sliding into place before he gave Hange a pointed look, brought his hands together with his palms faced outwards before he gave an exaggerated pushing motion.
“I know I’m usually the one for the crazy impulsive things, but we really shouldn’t lock our two drink makers in the cooler right before the rush hour,” Hange said with a sigh.  “And it was such a perfect opportunity, too...”
“Did you hide the coffee beans?”
“Maybe.”
“You should have done it near the end of the rush when no one was looking.  Then they might have gone looking for it when we could afford to shove them in a freezer for a while.”
“Erwin, you’re starting to sound like me.”
“It’s been a year and a half, Hange, I’ve lost my patience for this, it’s getting ridiculous.”
“We might have to stage a straight up intervention.  Before that, do you think we could set them up on a blind date?  Do you think they’d take that bait?”
“Levi knows what we’ve been doing, he’d see right through it...Hange, it’s taking them a while, where did you hide the beans?”
“In my car.  They’ll never find them until I want them to.  What if we just tell Y/N?  Shorty obviously isn’t going to make the first move, so maybe try to get her to?”
“No, I don’t think she will make the first move, either, they’re both too damn shy.  Hange, you should probably smuggle those back inside, it really is almost time for the morning rush, and we might need it.”
“Don’t worry about the beans, you just worry about your pastries.”
Erwin raised an eyebrow at her tone, noting that she was pretty much standing in the same place she’d been in when Levi snapped at them for gossiping when they should have been working.   “Don’t you have a menu to update.”
“Pfft,” she replied, looking like she was about to laugh it off before a now disgruntled Levi appeared through the back room doors, and she slunk away to at least look like she’d been doing it all this time.
“Just keep Hange up to date on how much decaf we have left so she knows when to stop selling it.  When it’s out, it’s out,” he was telling you, going back to his little section behind the corner where he would stay during the rush to make the teas.  The door opened with a quiet whoosh, and Hange scrambled down from where she’d been scrawling the new specials for the weak on the chalkboard menu so she could wait on the customer that had just walked in.
And just like they’d been anticipating, the rush began a few minutes later after the first arrival.
Tumblr media
When there was a lull in the constant flow of business that constituted your morning rushes, Erwin poked his head out of the back to gesture you over to him.
“Y/N, I need a second pair of hands back here, just for a second.  Hange, can you--?”
“On it!” Hange said cheerily, taking over your position behind the coffee bar while you hurried into the kitchen to help Erwin with whatever he was having trouble with.
Surprisingly, when you came into the kitchen, it didn’t look like he had anything going.  And looking over at the glass sliding back doors to the pastry shelves, it looked like everything was appropriately stocked.  He didn’t look like he was in the middle of cleaning--everything looked spotless, his supplies neatly organized and filled...so why were you back here?
Erwin turned to face you fully once the kitchen door swung shut behind you, heaving a sigh as he wiped the remnants of flour on his hands off on his apron.  “Listen, Y/N, Hange and I have been talking about how to go about this subtly for a while now, and I’m of the opinion that subtlety isn’t going to work, so--”
“You two are dating!” you gasped, interrupting him with a flash of excitement.  With all the whispering between the two and the times they would stow away leaving you and Levi alone to do who knew what, it made you start to wonder.  Especially with the little glares you caught Levi giving them every now and then, like he knew what they were up to and didn’t approve for some reason--or at least didn’t approve of it during working hours.
Erwin blinked, taken aback for a moment before he regained that unfaltering composure of his.  “Ah, no.  We’re not.  We can discuss where you got that idea later, but right now, we need to keep this quick before another rush comes in.  Do you like Levi?”
You let out a startled laugh at his question, for a moment believing he might be messing with you before you saw the serious look in his eyes.  “Do I...um...Why, why would you need to know that?” you asked, a blush starting to creep up in your face.
Yes, yes you did like Levi.  But you tried not to think too much about it.  He was kind of your boss as much as your coworker, and those thoughts, that you didn’t think were returned, would only be distracting if you let them slip through while you were working together.  And you two worked well together, like clockwork, perfectly in sync behind the counter no matter how fast paced and complicated business got.  You were rather proud of it, actually.  And you didn’t want to disrupt that, afraid to cause a ripple, or rather a wave, in the calm waters between you two if the feeling wasn’t reciprocated.
And sure, Levi and Erwin owned the place, it was a small privately owned business, not some franchise, so maybe a workplace romance wouldn’t be some big HR mess here, but if something did happen, and then something went wrong, it might ruin the good thing you all had going on here.
“I’m asking because Hange and I are certain that Levi likes you, as well,” Erwin said, clearly deciding based off your reaction that you did like him.  Especially after he just outed how Levi felt about you like that, your eyes widening as you stared blankly at him.  “But both of you are two shy and stubborn to do anything yourselves, and Levi’s been resistant to any of our nudges to get him to make any kind of move.  We’re both at the point of locking you two in a room together until you both come clean, but, this is probably the much more tacit and practical approach.  I figured if Levi won’t make a first move, perhaps you should just be told up front, so maybe you will.”
What you were not aware of, was that a few feet away from where Erwin and you were having your conversation, Hange was doing something similar with Levi as the two of them made coffees and teas, speaking around the moments where she had to pause and shout out an order or dash off to take a table their drinks to have a much more...to the point conversation with Levi.
“Levi, you’re stubborn, and lovestruck, and it’s too painful to watch you two awkward love birds waddle around blindly like this anymore.  You’re worse than children.”
“Hange, we’ve already talked about this, it’s none of your business, stay out of it,” Levi grumbled under his breath, at least taking pains to keep his voice lowered while talking about personal matters at work, even if it was to try and keep Hange quiet.
Hange didn’t care, though, and apparently she wasn’t messing around today, either.
“If you don’t tell her yourself soon, Shorty, I’m going to tell her.”
Levi set down the empty cup he’d just grabbed for another tea a little harder, glaring at Hange with a sharp look.  “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Try me.  You like her, Levi, and she likes you--it’s obvious.  Just ask her to go do something with you, it’s not that hard,” Hange stressed to him, assembling some of the teacups that had Levi’s freshly made tea in them to take out to some of the customers that were sitting in and not grabbing their drinks to go.
“Talk to her,” Hange stressed before taking off with the drinks, a big smile and playful laughter for the guests she entertained along the way.
“It’s not that simple,” he muttered under his breath, keeping his eyes down on the tea he was making as he thought of the ultimatum Hange just gave him.  As much as he kept hesitating and doubting himself when it came to confessing how he felt about you, and as much as he struggled to even think of what to say, he did want to finally say something.  Every time he tried, though, the words got stuck in his throat, or what he planned to say turned into something else entirely at the last second, something that had nothing to do with telling you how he felt.  However, he did /not/ want someone else confessing his feelings to you for him, even if it was meant to push him to act.  He wanted to do that himself.  So Hange threatening to tell you herself was actually a pretty smart move.  He hated how pressured he felt to say something, now, though.
But he really had been taking far too long to get this out between the two of you.  It was time he did something about it.  Now he just had to do it...even though he had no idea what he was doing.  What to say.  What they should do.  What it would mean.  If it would impact the two of you negatively, if it would even work out.
He was getting far too deep into his own head over this.  He just needed to...rip the band aid off.  Get it out and between the two of you.  As soon as Erwin returned you to the front, he would ask...ask...well, he was going to try and ask you out.  First he had to make sure you had time, though.
As if on cue, you came out of the kitchen with lightly flushed cheeks, looking preoccupied with your own thoughts as you robotically took your usual spot next to him at the coffee bar.  For a minutes, Levi kept glancing at you, suddenly hesitating because of the look on his face.  Maybe he shouldn’t say anything, it didn’t look like you were open to conversation even right now.  And you seemed a little closed off to him, like you were keeping to yourself for some reason.
Ah, fuck, but if he didn’t do it now, he might chicken out.  Or Hange might get impatient and spit it out anyway.
Levi scowled into the cup in front of him as he tried to figure out what to do before he just blurted out the sentence without even looking at you, ironically at the same time you tried to speak to him.
“Levi, can I ask you some--”
“Are you doing anything this week?”
Levi realized he’d just talked right over you, and he immediately started kicking himself, keeping his eyes glued to the tea instead of you as his cheeks started to color and betray his embarrassment as he scrambled for words.  Did he apologize?  Keep talking?  Explain himself?  You weren’t saying anything.  Wait, were you confused?  He knew your schedule--well, your work schedule, he was your boss.
“I mean, besides work--I know when you work, obviously, I just meant--mean...shit...I’m sorry, I interrupted you, um...What did you want to ask?” he said, hating himself more and more as he stumbled through the awkward words, closing his eyes and cursing himself.
“I, um...I was going to ask if you...if you liked...” Levi looked up sharply at you in surprise, heart skipping a beat as he met your gaze.  You stuttered at the eye contact, a strange little noise coming out of your throat as your cheeks burned a brilliant shade with the intensity of your blush.  “...would like to do something this week, actually.  Maybe see a movie, or grab something to eat together or...or go to the library.”
Levi stared at you.  “The library?”
Your gaze flickered up at him, appearing to scream ‘I don’t know, I panicked!’ so loud that he didn’t even need to ask.
You were both complete messes, weren’t you?
“We can.  Just...just pick a day, and we’ll figure it out from there.”
“Saturday night?”
“I can do that.”
“Okay?”
“Okay.”
A silence settled over the two of you, and you both went back to what you were doing, butterflies in your stomachs as you snuck glances at each other from the corners of your eyes, Levi trying to hide a subtle, pleased smile, and you brightly beaming but chewing on your lip as if you were trying to rein yourself in and have at least some decency.  It didn’t work of course.
Was that entire conversation...really that easy?  After all this time?
Hange was leaning against the wall next to Erwin’s little window, both of them staring at the two awkward lovebirds in a mixture of satisfaction and bewilderment.
It was Hange who spoke up.
“I don’t know the bigger pair of idiots are--those two who took so damn long just to say something so simple to each other...or the two of us that didn’t realize that it was as simple as telling them to talk to each other.”
“...You should probably put those beans back before Levi figures out what happened to them.”
“Shut up, you’re the one who wanted to lock them in a cooler,” Hange grumbled, quickly slinking away to try and sneak the decaf espresso beans back into the back storage without Levi noticing.
An endeavor doomed to fail from the start, but at least when he did catch her sneaking back inside with the decaf espresso beans in her arms it was quite a bit of entertainment for the regular customers who knew about Levi’s stricter, surlier attitude and Hange’s antics.

Sorry if it’s already been done, but what retail worker stereotypes do you think the Gaang would be. I feel Aang would be the one that has to keep the employees from killing each other lol. Thank you.
okay i’ve never worked retail and i may be underinformed on retail worker stereotypes so i just kind of ran with the retail jobs premise in general in the same vein as this LoK post! this isn’t quite modern AU but it is its own modern-day AU if that makes any sense at all.
aang: works at the juice store at the food court. no one who goes to the mall ever wants to just buy some juice, so he winds up spending a lot of time sitting on the counter, legs crossed pretzel-style, mooning over the hippieish girl who works at the craft store. she has long braids and walks around the store in overalls and socks and aang has just decided that she’s the girl of his dreams. the craft store is on the second floor but he can just barely see it if he sits on the counter and cranes his neck up and to the side. one day, he works up the nerve to go there on his break and buy some beads. before he heads up there, he decides to make her a juice that he thinks she’ll like. he spends almost an hour thinking of the perfect ingredients that match her vibe and choosing the exact right color straw––and then he gets there and the hippieish girl he’s had his heart set on for weeks is drinking a red bull. his heart is wounded that day.
sokka: sokka is the youngest geek squad employee at the best buy. it’s a great job. he gets to wear blue (which is his color) and he is surrounded by other nerds, most of whom are in college and don’t mind entertaining him in between customers by talking about their engineering classes and the projects they’re working on. a few of the girls he works with are so charmed by him that they invite him to tag along to guest lectures at the college campus from time to time. at work, sokka is very careful and attentive while he fixes computers, but it is undeniable that the customers test his patience. a day does come when a customer reiterates repeatedly that sokka is not to go poking around his browser history, and the only way sokka manages to wrest the laptop from this customer’s hands is by falsely assuring him that he is asexual
katara: katara got fired from pacsun because she attended a protest to block a new victoria’s secret from opening up in the mall and then invited the other protesters to come to pacsun after closing time for post-protest drinks and celebration. she opened the store and found her manager quietly drinking wine in the back. after that, it was just inevitable that she be fired.
toph: toph’s father does not allow toph to work. toph also happens to be an extremely, um, demanding customer, so when she comes to the mall, her friends insist she steer clear of their stores until their shifts are over and they can walk around together as customers. so she spends her time harassing mall cops instead and trying to get in the way when she hears their segways approaching. it’s a tough job but someone’s gotta do it 😇
zuko: zuko’s first job is after he is kicked out of his father’s house and moves in with his uncle and begins working in uncle iroh’s store. the jasmine dragon is located in a freestanding building across the parking lot from the mall. zuko thinks it is the most relaxing place in the entire world. with super-soft chairs and quiet instrumental music playing all the time, it’s just inevitable that eventually customers ask iroh if he’d ever consider scheduling an open mic night. much to zuko’s alarm, at the first installment of what becomes a weekly event, iroh invites zuko to open the proceedings by reading his own poetry. but it actually goes really well. in fact, that’s how he meets yue, who came with the intention of reading her own poems, and mai, who came to perform a five-minute standup set. the three of them become fast friends, and it’s common for zuko to pour the two of them tea while they sit in the jasmine dragon and workshop their writing together after school.
suki: suki never quite figured out how to endure a retail job. she got a job at one of the clothing stores and worked there for barely two weeks before she was fired for turning a cute tank into a cuter crop top. then she tried the craft store, where she worked alongside aang’s little crush for a bit, but she blew up at her manager after he threatened to institute drug testing. she decided to just stop trying after that, and instead she got a job teaching martial arts to kids at the local martial arts studio. it pays much better and she loves nothing more than teaching girls how to do some damage
mai: mai is forbidden from working, and besides, workshopping her standup in the jasmine dragon takes up pretty much all of her time.
azula: azula is also forbidden from working, but a part of her really wishes she could conquer the filthy and disorganized kmart near her school because she has a lot of ideas on how to improve the layout and make the queueing more efficient. unfortunately, ozai believes that it is an embarrassment to have children who work where others might see them, so she has to keep her corporate overlord fantasies to herself.
ty lee: ty lee manages two competing fast food franchise locations at the age of 17, and literally no one knows.

New Outlander Game Coming – Talking with the Game Designers
By:  Erin Conrad, June 15, 2021
Gamers Corner, TV News
Outlander game, Sony, Starz Outlander, Variable Outcomes
Who wouldn’t want to dash around the Highlands with Jamie, trying to be his favorite, and rescuing him from trouble on the way? That definitely sounds like a fun time, even if all you can do is dream about it. Or IS that all you can do?
NO! Sometime this fall, a brand new board game will debut – Outlander The Series! Designed by the husband and wife team of Matthew and Ashley Killeen, the game will let you play with a bunch of your friends, meeting familiar faces along the way, and getting in and out of all kinds of scrapes. The game will be available for holiday shopping, so you can start to set up your Outlander game nights now. I had the opportunity to talk with Matthew and Ashley about the development of this new game, and learned some details.
From the game’s marketing information: “His fate is in your hands! Step through the stones of Craigh Na Dun and run through the Scottish Highlands with the handsome Jamie. The year is 1743, and the outlaw James Fraser is at your side as you navigate the thrills and dangers of the Highlands. Use your wit, reach the right locations, make the right friends, and gather the items you need, all while keeping Jamie out of the hands of the many who would do him wrong. The gallows await fair Jamie (or worse!) should you fail. Fulfill your destiny, and win his heart. Only then will victory be yours!”
Outlander is the Killeen’s first big franchise game. “From a business point of view, it’s something I always wanted to do,” Matthew said. “I enjoy games with an IP license attached, TV show or movie, and I have designed prototypes that might be good for Ghostbusters or Star Trek. I really wanted to get into that.” Ashley knew Matthew was interested in trying a licensed game, and said “I’ve been watching Outlander, you should make a game based on that.” Matthew hadn’t yet seen the show, so he said “you do it” – and she did.
Tumblr media
Ashley didn’t get into the show until season three. “The first version (of the game) was based on the book, because I thought that might be the avenue to go. But it ended up being more layers to secure the book rights than TV. We heard back from Starz/Sony quickly, and the show and book were similar enough that I didn’t have to change too much from initial design. I swapped out characters and items that didn’t translate from one to another. Jamie still has same event encounters, the same enemies. It’s nice to look at both sides, to really put in all those little hidden tidbits from show. I’m hoping that fans of the show will enjoy all those subtle things that I’ve put in. But the other thing we wanted to make sure was that it was not dependent upon being familiar with the show, because the last thing you want is a game with Outlander masked on top of it that doesn’t play as anything on its own. And having a lot of friends who knew nothing about Outlander, how could I get them to the table?”
Matthew said, “One of philosophies for the board game stuff was that I’ve seen games that were maybe like a movie spin on top. Is this fun or exciting because of the game, or just because of the movie or tv show tie in? And one reason, the biggest reason why I got excited was when I first played it, I had never seen the show. I knew nothing about it. I had never seen the characters, and yet, I still enjoyed it. It was a good game.” Ashley added, “He has since seen the show.” Matthew continued, “That’s another thing that’s always bothered me. I feel like if a certain publisher or game designer makes something but doesn’t know the back story, that’s lazy. As soon as I found out we were going to do this, I watched the show. I know all my lore now. I was obviously able to play the game again once I knew the show and the lore, and it made the game play better.” “You understood my decisions,” said Ashley. “Exactly,” said Matthew. “Whether you know the show or not, it’s a good game.”
Ashley discussed their process: “I started December 2019. This past December, we were finally able to go forward. We got the contract from Sony in November. It was a long process! We got approvals for the design of the game, and access to the virtual library. We could figure out images that would go with the components we had.” Once they had that, Matthew figured out the graphic design for the game.
Was Sony/Starz helpful? Enthusiastic? Ashley said, “They were enthusiastic. They didn’t really have a board game. They had Destiny Dice, but that wasn’t the same thing.” (For my review of Destiny Dice, a game that came out a couple of years ago, click here.) I’ve had reservations about this previous game, so I asked how they overcame the failings of that one to make this new game. My concern with a platform like this is that the show is so big and layered – a group of women will come together over a glass of wine or three, and are they going to be able to figure it out easily enough to have a good time in an evening? Ashley feels that the new game will let us do that. “The idea behind this was that we wanted to bring everybody to the table – people whose board games lives consisted of Scrabble for their whole lives, and those who have played campaigning, like Mage Knights, epically, every week. We want to bring both those sets to the table. It should be intuitive enough once you’ve figured out the first turn order. It’s the repetition of that, it’s just your personal strategy that changes on what you choose to do, but the game play isn’t going to change on you as you go.”
She added, “But there’s enough in there that if you are an experienced board game player, you’re not sitting there bored waiting for the next thing to happen. That was our goal, as many people at the same table as possible enjoying it at the level they’re at. You can have the game player who knows nothing about Outlander, and you can have the Outlander fan who doesn’t play board games, and they will have a good evening. We also tried to be strategic about the length, because you don’t want to have just a tease of a game, because then you can’t be really invested and immersed in that world, but we also know, especially being parents now, you don’t have time to spend four hours on a game. That’s not going to happen any more. What’s a good length? If you can watch an episode of Outlander, you can play a round. So we wanted to find something that made sense. A lot of these pieces, once you apply a little logic to it, they fell together really nicely.”
This is the first “franchise” game the Killeens have designed. The fascination with board games started in 2004, and in 2011, Matthew began to design games as hobby. “I enjoyed playing, but in between then I was going to school and forgot about it. As school was winding down, I really got into it. I created an educational game called Witchful Thinking. We’re both teachers, and when doing practicum, the teacher (that he was working with) had kids doing games for math. but they were really boring, and the kids didn’t like it at all. I remembered I had a game that worked for this! I started looking at my business from a professional point of view, filling in gaps in the market. I wanted to bring people to a table they hadn’t been to yet. Witchful Thinking is a card game – witches brewing potions, teaching math – subtraction, addition, pre-algebra, and more advanced math. It was a great educational tool.” The company has more ideas – they have an upcoming Kickstarter for a game called Tennessee James, an Indiana Jones parody (learn more here). Matthew says that the company expects to bring out many more titles – “Between the two of us, we have a backlog of designs.”
When do they expect to have this out? Matthew said definitely for the Christmas season. “I am working with manufacturers right now, trying to iron out some of those details, but we’re going to be moving into manufacturing right now. It depends on how long it takes to do the mass production plus shipping, but I would estimate this would maybe in stores (or online retailers) by October. That’s probably a good estimate.”
Did they do a lot of testing? “We needed especially non-Outlander fans to play this game. The Outlander fans, it didn’t take a lot of convincing to get them to play,” said Matthew. “Even before there were pictures on the cards, they knew the board, they knew the characters. So even if you had a blank piece of paper that just said Murtagh on it, they know what it means. I wasn’t worried about the Outlander fans, and the game play is pretty intuitive, once you go through the steps. So once you’ve done a round, you can keep going around, no problem. So we were just like, ok, you don’t know what these names mean and where these places are, but you’ve got a bit of the information, are you on board? And so far the reaction has been, yes, I feel like I’m playing a game, even if they don’t know who Jamie is or anything like that.”
Tumblr media
He continued, “The tall and short of it is that this that this has been play tested thoroughly. It’s not broken, and the most important part is that it’s fun.” Ashley added, “It’s a nice balance of cooperative, nobody wants Jamie to come to any harm, but you still want to be his favorite. So you can get a little catty, and that’s what makes the fun. You’ll be adding something a little stronger to your tea nights once you start playing that way.”
Matthew said, “One of my strategies for play testing is that I like to try different strategies each time and see what works and what doesn’t .Ashley laughed, “You played mean one time.” “Yeah, it’s my wife, I’ve got to play nice, right? But one time, I didn’t play nice, and I took a competitive edge, and it was awesome,” he said. So players, remember that!
“When I was working on Witchful Thinking, I was looking to put it into Walmart and Target. But they don’t want to talk to the independent company, they want to make sure they’re getting multiple products from the same distributors. So we want to make sure that the distributors that we get are also trying to get the game out there. I do have distribution in the US for Witchful Thinking, and they’re excited to take on this one.”
What was your favorite part of the game, as you play it, I asked? Ashley said, “I like the QuickSave. This is a component we have because Jamie is always going to move in a predictable pattern, and the three villains he’s trying to avoid – Black Jack Randall, the Redcoats and the Watch – those are all the Meeples that are going to be moving around. As you are collecting friends along the way, if you happen to be en route to an Encounter, you can use the special abilities from your friends. So maybe it’s Dougal who is going to be discarded, and that will be a Quicksave to put Jamie back in hiding, so the game’s not over, you haven’t captured him yet. I like that idea, the Quicksave. So you’re strategizing, not just for what’s going to give you a lot of Favor from Jamie to try to win his heart in the game, but where are these people going to help me if Jamie is in a pickle. Because he’s going to get himself in a lot of pickles.”
As he does on the show, I said! Ashley continued, “And as a designer, that’s a fun way for me to tie in the personality of the characters. There’s a reason why they have the values that they do. There was a little argument between us in the design phase, because I made Willie – Willie Mackenzie from the first season – he has this hidden kind of superpower that most of the time, he’s a bit weaker, but when the danger level’s up, he’s strong. Matt was criticizing that, ‘he’s a minor character, why is he so strong?’ But you haven’t been paying attention. Because when Jamie’s in Wentworth, it’s Willie who’s willing to go. So that’s his power, when things are toughest, he’s the one that can save the most. I was having fun finding those little nuggets, the lore, that fans love, and if you’re paying attention to how I’ve designed it, you’ll start seeing like why you get more Favor in some places, or more Wit, or why you have the saving abilities.”
Tumblr media
The women playing will like seeing that, I agreed. “I think that we’ve got it so that your favorite characters, from S1 at least, this is just in the Highlands, you’re going to see them, I think they’ll do you proud,” Ashley says. “We’re still excited about it, even though it’s been a year and a half doing it, so I think that says something about it, that we can still be passionate about it, little choices like that, I think the game has life.” Ashley told me that she has ideas for additional Outlander games to follow each season, so this may go on for quite a while!
As their cute kids came into the room, I asked if game design was full time, or is this an extra job? Ashley said, “I’m a full time teacher, so I’m squeezing this in between the report card writing and the classroom stuff. With a bunch of changes with Covid, it’s made more sense for Matthew to stay home, so we decided to go all in, make this run for itself.” Matthew said, “I can speak from the graphic design standpoint – I didn’t design the gameplay, Ashley did that, but I offered suggestions here and there, it was her decision on things, and she made some great decisions. And between that, I did the playtesting and the graphic design in January and early February, I’ve put in hundreds of hours, not just with the graphic design, but also the business stuff too, figuring out social media posts, getting things approved by Sony, talking with the distributors. So this has been not just like a full time job, but overtime, I’ve put in some serious hours for this.”
Since this is the company’s first big license, I asked if is this something they want to continue. “Absolutely,” Matthew said. “And I knew that when I turned this into a hobby back in 2011. I enjoy making board games. I enjoying making movies, watching movies, reading books, all that stuff. I needed some sort of creative outlet. And this was it. I enjoy tabletop games, so I found a business that I’m passionate about. But I found over the years, since I am a small business, I had to learn everything. I can do the game design, I can do the graphic design, the IP stuff, social media, the PR, distribution. I have all those experiences, so if I can continue this, I’ll be very happy.”
Price point for the game should be $48.99 CA (US equivalent is about $40). And it will be available in the US, and more – Matthew says, “The territories we have with Sony are Canada, USA, UK, Australia and France. We’re a small family run company, but at the same time, this is a big license. So we want to do the fans proud, we want to do this IP proud, so we want to give the biggest reach that we can.” Ashley said, “We’re limited because we’re not the distributors, so once we put it in those hands, it’s really up to those stores that want to put it on their shelves. So until we know where they’re placing it, I can’t tell you ‘oh, pick it up here.’ ” Matthew agreed. “I have experience with all of that, so when I made Witchful Thinking and released that, I had a hard time getting distribution. So I went store to store, city to city, and I made those contacts myself. For me as a business owner, I’m not just one of those owners who throws money out and does it. I have experience in all these aspects. So when this game comes out, let’s say that distribution doesn’t have as far of a reach as possible, I’ll make it happen. With Covid especially, the online market is important.”
“From a business standpoint, we’re a new company,” Matthew said. “It seems that we’re very new to this but that’s not really the case. This game has been been in development for a long time, and between the two of us we have 20+ games in prototypes. So we definitely know how to make games, and make games fun. And the fact that we’re both teachers, I think makes it even better. Because as teachers, we have to know how to sell to an audience.” ” And explain the games,” Ashley added.

Do you have a fireplace in your house? Hell no. Just the idea of having a fireplace considering where I live and the general climate we have all year makes me nauseous haha.
Do you have a hot flask? I’m not so sure what you mean but if you’re referring to tumblers like Hydro Flask that keep drinks hot/cold for a really long time then yeah, I have one.
What decade were you four in? 2000s.

Go girl, go; G
Do you have a back garden? Not really a garden but we do have a sort of backyard; basically some space behind the house.
Do you have a gentle touch? Idk...depends on what I’m holding or touching, I guess? Like I would obviously hold an infant as gently and gingerly as possible, but I wouldn’t pay as much attention if I’m holding something ordinary like my phone.

Do you like Medieval games like 7elda? You mean The Legend of Zelda? I do love that franchise, but I don’t like the medieval genre as a whole; I just happened to grow up with the Zelda series and Nintendo as a whole, so I’ve taken a liking to it.
What's on your mind right now? That it’s Monday again tomorrow. I feel like I’m starting to get burnout :/ I’ve definitely noticed I haven’t been being 100% at work lately...but it could also be because the weather is crappy hot again, which makes it a lot harder to work and keep focused.

What odor can you smell in the room you're in now? The neutral scent my aircon is blowing out.
Do you get offended easily? I think sensitive would be a more fitting word.
Have you ever been to Ohio? No.
Do you ever say Oi? Sure, but not frequently.

Are you older than the number day you were born on? Yes.
Have you ever watched the film the Omen? I haven’t.
Name one thing you always have taken for granted? The basic things, I guess, like breathing.
Have you ever had an operation? On what? Never.
Do you like things in a set order or doesn't it matter? As much as possible I do want things to be organized, yeah. I get restless if I see a very messy spreadsheet or Powerpoint, for instance.
Do you have a habit of overreacting? I was a lot more...theatrical in my reactions before haha. Not so much these days; I’ve toned down a lot.
Do you think Owls are nice? Sure.

The Witcher Mall AU
so i’ve been yelling at @beeruler about this idea for the entire morning, but imagine if you will, geralt is not a witcher, but is a mall cop at Cintra Mall, and Jaskier works at the Cinnabon.
i have a LOT of thoughts about this so i’ll leave a couple here and the rest under the cut :)
Calanthe was set to retire from her job as a principal at a very fancy private school but then she found out that this mall was being demolished to make office space and she was not about that so she bought out the other owners to keep this mall running and now she is the owner of the mall along with her husband
Ciri is the granddaughter of the owner of the mall so everyone there loves her and she hangs out all the time after school. Calanthe worries about her mixing with people from the “wrong side of the tracks” or whatnot but it's hard to keep Ciri away because she found out that her father was from the other side of town and wants to find a connection to her roots
The Witchers are a security company that Calanthe hired to keep an eye on the mall. Ciri is unnecessarily close to all of them and they dote on her like a daughter. Dara is from the other side of the town and he and Ciri meet up at the mall to do what they think are cool things but really they just badly skate board, and loiter in front of no loitering signs. Eist thinks that hiring a security team full of ex-navy seals is a little excessive, but calanthe knows that it's the only way she can keep Ciri safe
Geralt knew Ciri's Dad when they were in the army together, and when he went down on the battlefield he asked Geralt to make sure that Ciri was okay. Geralt just checks on Ciri after the funeral and then leaves because she has the rest of her family, but Fate still gets in the way when the security company Geralt decided to work for starts working for the mall
i’ve got so many more hot takes  and also some art under the cut keep goinggg
i call this my paul blart mall cop au, and i’ll tag everything for it under PB!Witcher if you want to follow it! oh, and there are more drabbles to come for this, i am WAYY too invested to let this one go
Geralt doesn't work full-time at the mall he takes private security jobs occasionally that help keep his bank balance well secured.
Whenever he notices someone's stealing from the big shops at the mall, Gerald will look the other way if it seems like they needed it desperately enough
He really doesn't intervene unless the theft will affect the bottom line of the store itself
Once Ciri found out that Geralt and her father used to be friends he has a hard time getting rid of his tail. As he makes his rounds around the mall he very often spots Ciri and her little friend attempting to follow him he presumes subtly
Whenever Ciri decides to hang out in the parking lot of the mall, in the back corner where there are no cameras Geralt often finds himself checking up on her. Which is a good practice because of that one time when Ciri got riled up and insulted someone who was saying rude things about Dara, and he had to come in and break up a fight between and and 11-year-old and a 20-year-old
geralt holding back siri by the scruff of her hoodie
Ciri full on throws herself into any fight available because she knows that somehow Geralt will find his way into it and defend her
Calanthe never liked Ciri's Dad, so she doesn't want Geralt influencing her granddaughter but she knows that Geralt is the only thing between Ciri and a very quick trip to the hospital
So she tolerates Geralt and what he reminds her of
Roach is a huge old pickup, it's like a really fancy classic one, and no one knows how Geralt can afford it ((it's the private jobs))
Yen is the owner of the occult cafe at the mall. It's called Aretuza, and you can make your own coffee there using really cool-looking potion bottles and spells and stuff. No one is really sure if her magic is real or not but the coffee is heavenly. The shop itself books normal from the outside but when you step in the entire atmosphere changes in it looks like you're 30 ft underground. The shop is carded and there is no entry allowed for anyone under 21. they don't serve alcohol there or gamble or anything but yen just doesn't want kids in her shop. Calanthe was originally against it but when she realized that it would keep Siri out of more ways to get into trouble she let the policy stand. There's a back room in the shop which that is rumored to be home to a lot of very adorable kittens, but the one rule of the back room is that you don't speak of the back room.
Even though it's the sketchiest looking shop in the mall, none of the security team ever has reason to go in and help out, Tissaia, the owner's girlfriend is force enough to make sure that everyone stays in line
Nilfgaard is a rival mall that keeps trying to compete with Cintra for customers and I don't know mall competition things
Borsch owns the cinnabon except that he got into a fight with the corporate office who didn't like the independence that borscht was taking with their menu so he's technically not a real cinnabon franchise. All he did though was add an M on the sign where the N should be, and operates how he likes. Tea and vea are the actual front-facing employees and they make a version of the cinnabon that is almost sinful and never quite seem to get burnt when pulling things out of the oven ((borsch runs a Cinnabom :) ))
Triss is upper-level mall management. Calanthe bought the mall but she doesn't really care to spend her time managing it, she just makes sure that it stays float and that nilfgaard keeps its hands off of it. She gets Triss on board to deal with everyone that she doesn't feel like dealing with. Triss handles all the communication between the store owners and the mall, she makes sure that everyone is getting along and deals with troublemakers as she sees fit. She's friends with yen's girlfriend, and spends a lot of her free time hanging out at their store. She knows Geralt because they met at a particularly messy private job of his which is something that bonds people. She's also the one who organizes the entertainment nights at the mall and is in charge of publicity and customer engagement. She's really good at her job she knows exactly what the people want to see and can calm angry egos and pissy customers
She also used to date one of the other witchers I really don't know who it would be but I think that'd be fun ((bees suggested eskel, which is fantastic))
i had to stop myself from making jaskier’s story all angsty again but oh well lol
Okay so Jaskier's family has their own law firm, and he was supposed to join after law school except Jaskier did not want to sit in an office all day instead he wanted to pursue his passion of music and singing so he moved out of the house and started singing on the streets for exposure. One day he meet s Missy Stael, who falls in love with his singing and they eventually move into her house together. Jaskier keeps singing and recording demos in hopes that someone will scout him and goes to a lot of open mics where he drags Missy to listen and critique. Jaskier and Missy eventually breaks up and he decides to move out and find another way to pursue his passion, but he has a hard time of it and ends up couch surfing for a while. Missy finds out and lets him rent her frankly extraordinary basement to live in, while she and her new boyfriend live upstairs. They're not bad landlords, and Jaskier goes over for dinner a couple times a week. Still now he has to find a way to pay rent that's already very generous when his income is usually little to none
Jaksier meets Yennefer when He's singing on the street. Yen walking with tissaia, who notices his sign that says tips for a roast. Tissaia tips him and he has asked for roasts the life out of the two of them and the end gets really mad because she doesn't know why this random street singers insulting her. She almost punches him out before she notices what the sign says, and the two become friends. Jaskier actually spends a couple weeks on her couch after his breakup, and when he tells her about needing an actual job to pay rent, she's got some ideas
The first time Geralt meets Jaskier isn't at the mall it's at a very exclusive party where jaskier has gotten a little too friendly with the host's younger sibling. Gerald comes along to escort Jaskier out of the party, who thinks he's going to die when this absolute mountain of a man grabs him by the arm and gently pushes him towards the door. As he's very quickly walking away Jaskier looks back to see Geralt haloed in the light of the doorway behind him, and Jaskier in that moment is more afraid and attracted than he's ever been
