DEVELOPING STORY: Manila Central Post Office explosion halts new ID Applications for both UMID and Postal IDs
MANILA, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- A car battery explosion at the Manila Central Post Office (MCPO) was led to a temporary or indefinite suspension of new ID applications for two widely used identification cards in the Philippines - the Unified Multi-Purpose ID (UMID) and the Philippine Postal ID. The late incident occurred on Sunday (May 21st, 2023 -- Manila local time) causing significant damage to the post office building and disrupting its operations. Several reports by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) indicate that a faulty battery caused the explosion.
In a text message obtained to OneNETnews, the officials of Social Security System (SSS) and Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) releases a disclosed statement: "We would like to inform the public that the new ID applications for both UMID and Postal IDs are temporarily unavailable at the Manila Central Post Office (MCPO) following the car battery explosion incident", the said statement read.
SSS and Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) manage the UMID card, which provides beneficiaries with access to various government services. The program was introduced in 2010, a decade before the CoViD-19 pandemic years to streamline services. National media reports say that the government agencies like the Department of Health (DOH), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth-IC) accepts UMID cards.
The Postal ID however, is a convenient alternative to a primary ID that is both convenient and affordable. It is accepted by the Philippine government and private institutions for various purposes such as proof of identity as E-Wallets and banking, transaction verification and eligibility for discounts on certain products and services. Applicants who were planning to obtain neither the UMID, Postal ID or both are advised to temporarily seek alternative options while repairs and investigations are ongoing at the affected national post office. Residents can explore other government-issued identification cards such as the Driver's License, Passport or the Voter's ID to fulfill their identification requirements.
Officials from PHLPost have yet to announce an estimated date for when new ID applications for UMID and Postal IDs will resume sooner at the MCPO. It is recommended that individuals to stay updated through official announcements from the aforesaid government mailing company regarding the availability of the services affected by the incident. Post office facilities should prioritize safety measures to prevent such incidents from occurring again. BFP investigators are currently investigating the cause of the explosion and addressing any potential negligence or lapses in safety protocols.

Here in Dumaguete alone, new ID applications of UMID confirms that the contract was expired indefinitely with no potential date of resumption on SSS. While the PHLPost branch office in Santa Catalina Street completely goes out of order, leaving no applicants were applied and to pay a one-time fee either the Regular or Rush applicants.
As authorities work towards restoring normal operations in 2024 or later and ensuring the safety of postal facilities, the public is urged to remain patient and cooperative with the necessary adjustments implemented during this temporary or indefinite suspension of ID application services for both UMID and Postal IDs.

Duma-GET-me indeed!
This week, I was able to go to Dumaguete and take a break from all the pollution and stress that the city was crushing me with.
Don't get me wrong—I love the city. It's been my home for as long as I can remember, and waking up to the symphony of cars, jeepneys, and the lively chaos of my siblings gearing up for school serves as my daily wake-up call. There's something oddly comforting about it, almost like my own built-in alarm system.
Plus! I find joy in navigating the city's well-worn sidewalks, effortlessly making my way to malls whenever I need something I can't find elsewhere. Walking around, I like the sound of traffic and the random voices of people on the streets. These things have shaped the way I see life. Everything moves fast here, and if you're slow, you end up behind in the busy city life. Yet, it's in this hustle and bustle, within my umwelt, that I've found the essence of life—embracing the noise, finding beauty in everyday things, and cherishing the moments that might get lost in the city's lively rhythm.
Tumblr media
Ok back to the main point! Dumaguete!
Planning this trip with my friends turned out to be a really cool experience. I carefully sorted out where we'd go, like Pulangbato Falls, the beach house, the boulevard, and Valencia, aiming for each place to be fun and different. My main goal was for all of us, especially my boyfriend (the main reason for the trip), to enjoy the fresh air away from the city. I imagined everyone just sitting, chilling, and listening to the trees talk—a sort of shared escape into our own separate worlds.
I had all these thoughts in my head because I'm someone who likes setting and reaching goals. I'm one to create a mental picture of how I want our adventure to be. However, the trip didn't go exactly as planned. It brought some unexpected drama and uncomfortable moments, a mix of challenges that turned out to be both testing and revealing to our friendship and my relationship.
The first day in Dumaguete left me feeling a bit down. I thought everyone would support my plans, but instead, we ended up arguing a lot, and I felt like we wasted time. At that moment, my envisioned shared escape seemed a bit shaken.
Surprisingly, though, these challenges led to us talking more, especially with my boyfriend. We shared feelings and concerns that we'd kept quiet about for months. This unexpected stuff brought us closer and made our connection stronger, turning a difficult situation into something that benefited us. Looking back, I'm glad for these challenges because they made our bonds stronger, and I don't regret anything about it.
Tumblr media
Fastforward, Dumaguete offered a mix of experiences—from the refreshing breeze to the absence of busy traffic and the unique local foods that differed from what I knew in the city. Everything here felt like the opposite of the hustle I was accustomed to. Once, while lounging on the balcony with my friends, time seemed to stretch, creating a sense of extended tranquility, even though it was just a short 30 minutes.
In Dumaguete, life took on a distinct quality—an experience that felt like we were in a fishbowl. The surroundings, whether the trees, the birds in flight, or the chickens casually strolling around, gently enclosed us. This crafted an atmosphere of intimacy, like quietly observing life through the see-through walls of a fishbowl. These subtle elements made four days feel like a laid-back month-long stay for us, to be honest.
Tumblr media
I can't wait to be back in this paradise, as I felt and grew so much in it despite it being just for a few days. Even after arriving in Cebu, I felt like a completely different person because I left behind all the bad stuff in Cebu and found a better version of myself in Dumaguete.
Like the locals say, "Duma-get-me!," and Dumaguete really did get me in a good way.

october duma dump
so i was at dumaguete. again. it's probably the most chill city i have ever been in the philippines. guess why i am back? yes, because i'm at an education fair -- again. oh, the perks of being an education counselor.. you get to travel and try new food in every new city. best of both worlds. i guess you could say i'm hannah montana. just kidding.
anyway, i was so happy i was able to take some cute photos (considering that my phone is in its retirement stage). first pic upper left was a mirror selfie while i was preparing for the fair. second pic upper right was a very beautiful decoration i saw at a dainty local restaurant that served the cheesiest nachos i have ever tasted and sweetest (the right amount) mango shake i ever had! no kidding. the mango shake was really THE BEST. i also found out it was the harvest season so that explains why. third, fourth, and sixth pics were from the boulevard where the nightlife is really pretty and chill and breezy and peaceful. fifth and eighth pics were platters of seafood but i did not eat because i am allergic to shrimps. seventh pic, the second to the last, is me in my pink dress that i love. it's so dainty and feminine and i bought it at such an affordable price! i didn't expect it to be of really good quality but it is. such a steal.
i enjoyed the duma trip. it was the ultimate laidback city where everything is mostly handmade and homemade. i recently learned that it's the top retirement place in the philippines. this explains why a lot of people all over the world are in there. it's like being in boracay. you come across people of different nationalities when you stroll in their streets.
they also have their famous sansrival but i didn't get to take one home because i am afraid it would melt during my travel. i am sure though that it truly delights the heart -- just like its city. #dumagetme

My boyfriend went to the province today with his family. I couldn't help but feel envious. Last year, I was fortunate enough to visit Dumaguete, a province here in the Philippines, as far as I know, is located anywhere within the Visayas region. Man, I still remember my first night there. I couldn't sleep well since I was already feeling homesick. It was my first time being that far from home. Everything was just so different there compared to Manila. But what they say is true about the province life -- If you want to relax, get your mind cleared up and away from the stress, the province is the best place to go.
The life there is different. During my stay, electricity was out in the whole area due to a massive storm hitting the place. The water supply was the same. Luckily, there were kind people that would drop by from place to place and from time to time in the area to provide water for the residents. So you could say everything was within limits. Surprisingly, the residents were unbothered, it seemed like it wasn't a big deal for them to lose power and water. For them, "life goes on".
It made me realize how different it would be if it were to happen in Manila. I could imagine and feel the frustration people would have to lose both. For some, it would feel like it's the end of the world.
I had to live without electricity for a week there, so imagine how hot it was at night to sleep without any air conditioning or a fan, and how dark it was.
In Manila, I would bathe at least two times, day and night. In the province, I could only bathe once and at night time only. We had to wait the whole afternoon for the fire trucks with water to come by and provide us water for the day. Mind you, that happened daily.
I also learned how to cook a few Filipino dishes there that I usually don't do in Manila. I did a lot of household chores there too. I learned to wake up early even if I was the only one who would sleep in late. It felt illegal to wake up late in the province. I needed to start the day earlier than I can to have enough time to go to the wet market. I never really liked going to wet markets since I was a kid until I came to the province and it became an actual habit to go there every morning to buy food for the day. I realized how tough it was to think of what dish to cook, and how to budget the daily expenses. I couldn't help but miss and remember my mom since she does most of the same work back in Manila. Indeed, moms are the best.
I felt like I matured there a lot in one week.
Everyone's feelings are valid though. One's struggle should never be a basis to invalidate someone else's struggle. I guess, maybe it really depends on how we look at life and how we react to things. For me, during that time, I learned how to be grateful and more content with the things I have, that I usually take advantage of before.
Looking back, now I just miss the province life. I told my boyfriend earlier that I would come and visit again.
Oh, and did I mention that the beaches there were beautiful? We went to three different beaches and the rates were so cheap! 5 pesos (.89 cents USD)! You can even bring your own food and drinks. A must-visit.
If you ever feel like running away to unwind, even for just a week, I recommend that you'd visit and stay in the province. A lot of good people are there. It feels nice as well to learn from them. You learn how to navigate through life the simplest possible way you can.
