You know how in double and neoplasm it becomes pretty clear that John isn’t actually evil or a bad person and he’s only acting that way to protect mikoto and scare others away, who could potentially harm him? I just remembered this timeline conversation back in trial 1.

We see here that John is being a bitch towards Amane. But she just shrugs of the insult and goes moves on. Notice how John is surprised by this and is confused why Amane isn’t taking it personally. I think that after the information we got, because it seems very likely that John is only acting that way to push others away from Mikoto and acting evil, he’s surprised by Amane’s mundane reaction here.
