ok thinking about all this stuff is so interesting I’ve always thought on how Amane presents her murder to other people (and by extend herself) as purely a result of her faith and that it was in line with her doctrine. But in reality her murder was mainly an emotionally driven one started by the death of her cat with the only thing she could truly love being taken away from her. Which is especially present when comparing Of Blessedness and Punishment vs The Purge March.
And now I’m thinking about her hatred of Shidou and how it parallels her murder so much. In a way Amane started hating Shidou because of how he treated her as nothing more than a child and denied her emotions and everything that could’ve caused a child to murder. And with all the suffering Amane went through that being incredibly disrespectful, she already started hating Shidou in trial 1.
And in trial 2 with Shidou solidifying his position as a doctor by helping all the people who were injured this really pushed Amane off the edge. As she had lots of trauma around medicine and essentially that was almost the root point of why she murdered. So seeing someone she hated do something like that and with her already deteriorating mindset would’ve completely pushed her off the edge.
Amane presents her hatred and desire to kill Shidou as purely a religious one again. As he denies the doctrine by not letting these people endure their trials and using medicine. But it’s particularly interesting how she’s sympathetic to Fuuta despite him having to rely on medical care perhaps makes me think that like her murder, her hatred of Shidou is not only because of religious reasons but also how he’s treated and disrespected her in the past.

you cant ever let yourself forget what it felt like to be 15. how adults treated you. being treated without a shred of respect because people think youre too young to have thoughts and feelings of your own. the lack of autonomy. you cant ever forget that because if you do you might become the kind of adult who treats kids like theyre not people

Yes yes YES a double analysis on my two favourite blorbos? I’m all in
Tumblr media
But yeah you’ve definitely bought up some good points so I don’t exactly need to say more. But something I forgot to mention is how John got confused when Amane ignored his rude comments. Because he was acting in a way where he deliberately wanted to get a fearful reaction out of her and was subjected to well, not that and he kinda freaked out and especially what you said about him having a whole “acknowledge my presence” thing going on.
And in Amane’s case it’s definitely interesting with her of how much she wants to be treated as an adult. Especially with what she’s been through forcing her to grow up too fast in a way and being the youngest person among the prisoners, of course she’d want to be treated with respect by others. And within a prison full of people who have committed murder (or adjacent to it) she HATES being looked down upon through the whole “she’s just an elementary schooler how is she here”? Mindset that especially Shidou has. And that is incredibly rude to someone like Amane as she had to endure abuse her whole life and because of that ended up violently killing someone. And the way all the others treat her may come as disrespectful and negating to her trauma and experiences simply just because she’s a child, even if it’s not intentional. And the beliefs that children can’t stand up for themselves or fight in any sort of way could be the subconscious belief that pains Amane here. That she’s so dehumanised by everyone else she tried to put on a more mature persona in front of others and uses more sesquipedalian words while hiding her childish side. And it bleeds through in Magic with the whole MV and song having a more childish atmosphere to it that she’s been trying so desperately to hide.
John also parallels this thing in a completely opposite way than Amane in this conversation. He never got to be a child and especially with his whole view on humanity he’d treat Amane in the exact way that she wouldn’t want to. And how he tried to antagonise her by very clearly talking down to her almost in a way how a stereotypical bully would talk to a younger person with almost a passive aggressive type attitude.
it’s interesting as to me as the only few people John has interacted with (while not masking) are a 12yo and a 15yo and I’ll have to look at the VDs more with Es but it’s certainly interesting as John never would’ve known what it would’ve been like at that age and talks down to them. But at the same time he doesn’t like it when people exercise authority over him. And thinking about it he may even have a subconscious beliefs around social positioning and power and especially with the quote
“All high and mighty… Like you aren’t just a kid! Serves you fucking right!”
that yeah he may definitely have a mindset of how people (especially children) should stay in their social roles and perhaps deserve punishment for acting outside of that. (Maybe could be linked to the abuse Mikoto faced? Idk) And since his entire life was in Mikoto’s highly capitalist life with being in a job like that I perhaps can see why John believes that. But really thinking about it in the whole theme of children vs adults and a child’s place in society John is a direct foil to Amane here and how each other are the worst traits they’d see from an adult/child.
There’s also Kotoko, the only adult John has interacted with in this situation. It’s kinda hard to read it here but it definitely seems how John reacted to Kotoko threatening to kill him one time was much more on the defensive side compared to Amane and Es.
“Haah? Why don't you try it then, you lunatic. I'II crush anyone who tries to harm me... I'll make sure to thoroughly beat you at your own game...!!”
it definitely seems here John may be subconsciously treating Kotoko as more of an equal. Rather than with the kids John rejecting more so of her violent attitude rather than the idea of a kid being out of their social place. And especially since Kotoko instigated this conflict here John reacted in both a threatening and defensive way which is definitely notable. I wanna see John interact with more characters as this is actually really interesting. I wonder what his thoughts are on the older prisoners and such and especially how he would’ve treated them as he essentially did manage to push everyone away from Mikoto. I really want to see a Kazui and John interaction as Kazui would be able to beat him in a physical fight and being much older and having more authority than a 23yo would probably feel threatening to John with the whole idea of social hierarchies but at the same time disliking authority.
but yeah in all essence it boils down to what you said about John treating other people more so as threats than humans. Having a mindset based off paranoia and the protection of someone else may perhaps make it hard for him to empathise with other people in such a way. And this whole social thing with the themes of adults vs children with someone who was essentially born an adult and lived with that, compared to a child who was forced to grow up too quickly and hates when people treat her as a child and dehumanise her is incredibly interesting. And especially that Amane and John are my two favourite characters I’m surprised I never really picked up on that but it’s incredibly interesting.

What I was saying is that John targets people even if they haven’t hurt Mikoto in the first place, he’s just scared of the possibility of them hurting him so that interaction with Amane makes sense. And I highly doubt Mikoto would act mean towards her in a way like that which could ruin his reputation he’s tried to build.

Does anyone else get really burnt out by simply talking? I was thinking about how a couple days ago I had a conversation with a friend that was over 2 hours and I was like “wow this is probably more than I talk in a week”. And I think how I’m either always alone so I just don’t talk and when I’m around other people I usually put in a bad mood so I don’t have the energy to talk. And my family always uses Alexa and stuff to control the lights but for me I always find it so much easier to actually walk and flip the switch myself.

Yeah yeah it definitely seems here that John was doing one of those things where he acts aggressively towards other people in order to make them fear Mikoto and stay away from him. But it’s seriously interesting that he’s doing this to a child, that in his mind this 12yo that has nothing against Mikoto could be a potential threat so dangerous that she deserves to be yelled at like that (I mean she did kill an adult but John wouldn’tve been aware of this and again she showed no hostility towards them).
Kinda makes me think of maybe John puts all other people that aren’t Mikoto into a certain box where he does not trust them at all and does not put certain factors into play, such as acting violently towards a 12yo and a 15yo. Because to him all other humans are the same, vile creatures that Mikoto should stay away from, perhaps.
Another theory I’ve seen is that perhaps he has a thing against children and stuff? Kinda like what op mentioned that he never got to be a child and was essentially born an adult. And John has a lot of symbolism with children especially with the children’s cries in the background of the phone scene so I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe he has a negative view on children, like Haruka.
Okay I'm too shy to add these tags to a recent post I saw but it's this one.

Happy 4th anniversary milgram! I don’t have anything to post right now so here’s just the Amane drawing I made after the promo art
Tumblr media
Shading and perspective test done with 4th anniversary Amane! Couldn’t get over the floor flowers but I absolutely loved the symbolism it implied so I had to draw something based off it.

Third round, Second fight
Quote number 10 :
The "lt can't be helped", from the scum who can't be helped
-Momose Amane, Milgram
VS
Quote number 14 :
Furthermore, isn't it condescending of you to assume that just because I happen to be a child, I am incapable of hating someone enough to kill them?

Trial 2 timelines graphic
I did a thing with the timeline conversations.
Tumblr media
Unlike the other post, this one doesn't include the ones before Trial 2 began. Not much is lost, though; each pair from before then ends up speaking again.
The color of each line corresponds to the birthday of the prisoner. Haruka, however, has two extra timelines outside of anyone's birthday. (Please forgive Muu-san)
