One of the pretexts Putin used for his imperialist war of aggression against Ukraine was the alleged existence of Nazis there. Never mind that there are more Nazis in the Kremlin and on Russian state TV than in all of Ukraine.

So just who is entertaining Putin’s troops who are getting ready to commit war crimes? Nazis – of course.

A neo-Nazi band with lyrics about “white power” and “Aryan destiny” shot a music video at a Russian army base, featuring masked soldiers from a unit of soldiers drawn from the far-right hooligan scene.

The incident underlines overt right-wing extremist sentiment within sections of the Russian military, further exposing the hypocrisy of the Kremlin’s propaganda claims about “de-Nazifying” Ukraine. It’s also shone a spotlight on the 106th Airborne Reconnaissance Detachment “Moscow,” a Russian army unit based in the city of Tula, south of Moscow, which is distinctive for recruiting members specifically from the football hooligan and ultranationalist movements – themselves hotbeds of radical right-wing ideology.

The band, Russkiy Styag, which translates as Russian Banner, released the video for its track “We” to its social media channels last month, with a statement that it was “filmed with the support of the commanders and fighters of the ‘Moscow’ [unit] of the 106th Airborne Division.”

The video features Russkiy Styag’s lead singer performing in what appears to be the “Moscow” unit’s base in Tula, flanked by masked soldiers and with a poster featuring a neo-Nazi black sun symbol displayed prominently in the background.

The band did not just wander into the base. The far right in Russia are among the most enthusiastic supporters of Putin’s war.

The cosy relationship between the army unit and the neo-Nazi group is a vivid display of the apparent tolerance – or in this case, open embrace – of right-wing extremist ideology among Russian forces. Alongside the overt neo-Nazi orientation of paramilitaries fighting on the Russian side of the conflict, it cuts against the Kremlin’s already widely-dismissed efforts to paint its bloody invasion of its neighbour as a push to somehow eradicate “Nazism” in Ukraine.

These folks are so obviously Nazi that even the Trump State Department designated some of these Russian groups as “white supremacist terrorists“ in 2020.

But experts say the Russian depiction of Ukraine as a hub of Nazis, in a bid to justify a war of imperialist aggression, is perverse, especially given the role of Russian neo-Nazi paramilitaries like Rusich and the Russian Imperial Legion, designated by the United States as a white supremacist terrorist organisation, and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s longstanding instrumentalisation of the ultranationalist far-right.

Tankies in the West who practice bothsiderism in the war or who retain some residual affection for Russia on the basis that it’s the successor to the glorious communist USSR are effectively turning a blind eye to Naziism. Genuine anti-Nazis want Putin and his clique to lose this war.

I picked some significant quotes but everyone needs to read it full. It's not a long read, don't worry.

Today’s Russia meets most of the criteria that scholars tend to apply. It has a cult around a single leader, Vladimir Putin. It has a cult of the dead, organized around World War II. It has a myth of a past golden age of imperial greatness, to be restored by a war of healing violence — the murderous war on Ukraine.

World War II is an element of Mr. Putin’s historical myth of Russian innocence and lost greatness — Russia must enjoy a monopoly on victimhood and on victory. The basic fact that Stalin enabled World War II by allying with Hitler must be unsayable and unthinkable.

A time traveler from the 1930s would have no difficulty identifying the Putin regime as fascist. The symbol Z, the rallies, the propaganda, the war as a cleansing act of violence and the death pits around Ukrainian towns make it all very plain. The war against Ukraine is not only a return to the traditional fascist battleground, but also a return to traditional fascist language and practice. Other people are there to be colonized. Russia is innocent because of its ancient past. The existence of Ukraine is an international conspiracy. War is the answer.Because Mr. Putin speaks of fascists as the enemy, we might find it hard to grasp that he could in fact be fascist. But in Russia’s war on Ukraine, “Nazi” just means “subhuman enemy”— someone Russians can kill. Hate speech directed at Ukrainians makes it easier to murder them, as we see in Bucha, Mariupol and every part of Ukraine that has been under Russian occupation. Mass graves are not some accident of war, but an expected consequence of a fascist war of destruction.

Can you explain why 1984 is fundamentally reactionary? I remember seeing a journalistic article talking about the same thing but sadly it was paywalled

The whole premise of the book is "if we let the government do too much stuff, eventually the government will get so big it will do Everything and nobody will be able to stop it, it will grow so big it will be a self-perpetuating tyranny."

It's your typical liberal cautionary tale against "authoritarianism", conflating fascism and communism while understanding neither. Orwell had never been to the Soviet Union, and instead drew heavily from his own experience working for the British Ministry of Information. Later in his life, he would even compile a list of suspected Communists to hand over to British intelligence agents, some on the list included solely because they were gay or Jewish.

Animal Farm is another example of his reactionary sentiment, in which the peasants and workers of the Soviet Union are depicted as gullible and weak-minded animals jerked around at every turn by the pigs, a stand-in for Marxists in general and Bolsheviks specifically. Incidentally, Orwell during his time at the Ministry of Information had become acquainted with one Gertrude Elias, who shared with him her own idea for a cartoon film depicting the Nazis as tyrannical pigs ruling over the other animals in a farm. Orwell had told her the idea wasn't any good, before going on to write Animal Farm, replacing the fascists in the story with communists.

Compare Orwell's depiction of the mindless masses in Animal Farm to the "proles" in 1984. 1984 hardly mentions them except to say that they all live in squalor and have no agency worth considering, which allows them to live free of surveillance and control, since the State doesn't see any purpose in expending the resources to surveil them. They're all dumb, mindless addicts and gamblers whose only purpose is to provide menial labor. Meanwhile, the protagonist of the book, who is cunning and able to question the whole situation, is a middle-class white collar propagandist, just like Orwell was during his time at the Ministry of Information. Orwell clearly viewed himself as superior to the mindless masses, and he was a racist to boot, just look at what he wrote about the Burmese or the Irish. The Russian masses as depicted in Animal Farm needed little more than to be ordered around and they were willing to follow whoever was giving the orders. The English masses as depicted in 1984 needed a bureaucratic mountain of sophisticated social engineering dedicated entirely to manipulating every last minutia of information in society in order to be subject to the same level of control.

What we know about Goncharov’s mysterious director, Matteo JWHJ 0715 and his tragic, yet fascinating life.

He was born as Matteo Di Sciocchezze to a poor catholic farming family on November 5th, 1938, in Torre del Greco, just outside of Naples, during the fascist Mussolini regime.

It is rumored that the Sciocchezzes were heavily indebted to the Russian-Italian Chmerkovskiy crime family, after they bought a surplus of inventory from Matteo’s father’s cheese-making business when they weren’t able to sell off the excess supply.

His older brother Macareo was killed by German Nazis during WW2, causing him to have an intense hatred of Nazism and fascism, which would later be themes in his work.

Self-identified as bisexual in his teens but was shunned by his family. He would later join Fuori!, or “Out!”, the first homosexual organization in Italy, in 1972, soon after its founding after being attracted to its initial Marxist ideals. It was one of the first associations of the Italian homosexual liberation movement.

Matteo was briefly married to actress Rita Lozionne and had one son with her, Bruno Lozionne, in 1970, but the separated soon after she gave birth.

Sophia Loren mentioned in a 1984 Variety article that she had been “madly in love with Matteo” at one point during their relationship in the early 1960s but had to end their relationship because of the “incident in Prague.” She would not go into further detail.

Changed his last name to his license plate number, rejecting his homophobic family and becoming disillusioned with the idea of nationalistic self-identity.

Knew John Waters and helped fund some of his earlier films.

Aside from Goncharov, the only other surviving work in his filmography, most which was tragically lost in a studio fire in Milan in 1987, were the underground early 60s short films “Tales of the Dog,” a 4 part series, and his 90 minute 1968 film “Green Candles.” These works are incomplete and partially damaged due to the fire.

Matteo had been in a gay love affair with the married producer Domenico Procacci (pictured below from a still one of Matteo’s “Tales of the Dog” films) during the production of Goncharov. Procacci admitted to this years later in 1998, and that they had been planning to leave for San Francisco before his untimely death.

Matteo died tragically in 1974, however, after falling backwards out of a window, supposedly while playing the mandolin (his favorite past time), as sources claimed.

His son Bruno Lozionne emigrated with his mother in 1976 to the United States, and is currently living in Carbondale, IL, working as the senior office manager of Hardison Supply Co.

I'm very late to be jumping on the bandwagon, but I'm so confused that some people are surprised that Guillermo del Toro, a person who helped create

a film where the protagonists are sheltering in an orphanage that's run by Republican loyalists and being targeted by Francisco Franco's bombs,

a film where the antagonists are occult Nazis (and Rasputin) who want to unleash eldritch beings upon the world,

a film where the major antagonist is a sociopathic Falangist captain who is hunting the Spanish Maquis, either murders or is responsible for the deaths of most of the rest of the cast, and might just be more monstrous than the child-eating monster with eyes in its' hands,

a book trilogy and a television series where one of the major antagonists is a Nazi, we're shown the wholly unsympathetic reasons for how and why he became a Nazi, he repeatedly targets, torments and tortures one of the major protagonists because he despises him for being Jewish, and in the final act of the story the vampires take over at least North America and put all the humans in camps to be farmed,

a film where the major antagonist is a cruel Colonel in the American army in the 1960s who tortures and plans to vivisect the imprisoned Amphibian Man, and is defied and thwarted by a mute woman, a Black woman, a gay man and a Russian spy,

and now a film where the characters suffer under the Italian Fascist regime, a little boy is forcibly recruited into the army alongside other children because he'll make 'the perfect soldier' and Mussolini is outright mocked to his face,

hates fascism???

Man, the Russia/Ukraine war has led to a lot of terrible takes from far leftists. I have a mutual from Brazil, a self identified socialist, who is convinced that Ukraine is full of nazis. While they don't support Russia, they questioned why they have to be "pro-Ukraine" or "pro-Russia". They call Ukraine a "nazi hole" but call Russia merely "fascist". Am I wrong in thinking that they've been influenced by Russian propaganda? I know Ukraine does have a nazi/far right problem, but so does the US? And most European countries? idk they strongly hate the US/US government too, and it seems to create some kind of brainrot. at least they don't blindly support China or Russia like tankies do (nor identify with them), but it's still frustrating to take a neutral position on a pretty black and white situation.

I don't want to confront them 1) cause I'm not the type to argue over serious things like this and this may break our long friendship and 2) I'm not super educated on the nazi situation in Ukraine.

Yes, Russia has specifically focused its propaganda efforts on Latin America, Africa, and other regions that HAVE suffered from Western/European/American imperialism and are thus predisposed to take the worst view of them/believe that this situation is their fault somehow. This is similar to what the USSR did in newly postcolonial Africa in the 1960s and 1970s, positing themselves as offering the shared hand of communist brotherhood from Western oppressors. Because of more recent events like the invasion of Iraq, which was fully as unjustified as the invasion of Ukraine, Russian propagandists and their eager tankie/leftist foot soldiers have also got a lot of mileage out of "whataboutism." This is likewise an old Soviet propaganda technique designed to deflect any criticism of the actual situation by disingenuously asking "what about this other one!!!"

Likewise, the idea that Ukraine has a "Nazi problem" is itself propaganda. In the last election, far-right/Nazi-identified parties won barely 2% of the vote and AFAIK, no seats at all in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament). This is far lower than the nearly half of the USA voting for the far-right/Nazi-sympathetic Republican Party, and as noted, the far right elements in the UK and Europe. The idea that Ukraine is "full of Nazis" (with a Jewish president who just celebrated iftar with the Ukrainian Muslims/Crimean Tatars during Ramadan and instituted observance of Muslim holidays nationwide, very Nazi of him) is a line used by Russian propagandists to "justify" their attack and appeal to national memories of the Great Patriotic War (World War II) and the struggle against the Nazis, which is the central cultural grievance/memory in modern Russia. The Putin regime has referred to anyone they don't like, but especially the Ukrainians, as "Nazis" for a long time now, so it's supposedly their holy duty to kill them/commit ethnic cleansing/forcibly reunite the "fraternal" people of "Little Russia," as Ukraine has been called since the 17th century, with "Great Russia." And yeah, no.

Because the West and Europe has been pretty solidly on Ukraine's side, Russia has therefore cultivated countries like China, India, Brazil, etc, who have all suffered from Western interference and are looking to move into the first rank of global superpowers. This is, as noted, similar to the competing systems of influence built during the Cold War, but it also relies on much deeper Russian grievances that go back to the medieval era. Anybody who knows a thing about actual Russian history would therefore know that every single word it says about the Ukraine situation is a lie, but because that lie is useful for many other countries and fits into their own understanding of themselves, it is easy to repeat and act like it's a so-called superior moral position. This is also why US/American tankies so eagerly lap up Russian propaganda, because it plays into their moral sense of themselves as far better than the rest of the West and "righteously" discovering that the West is responsible for all the evil in the world etc etc. While non-Westerners are just helpless misunderstood puppets with no real agency or ability to make complex choices. This totally makes sense!!!
