📚 QUEERBOOK 2024 is hereee! We made a book by and for LGBTQ+ youth! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Last year, we asked LGBTQ+ youth: what's your idea of a "queer utopia?"

Not gonna lie - with more than 150 bills introduced in 35 states in 2023 that aimed to restrict student access to inclusive and diverse books and other library materials, the theme felt pretty radical.

And you DELIVERED. With the help of our Youth Voices (amazing queer youth activists from across the country), we compiled your amazing submissions of poetry, short essays and letters, visual art, photography, and more into Queerbook 2024. Like a yearbook, it captures what queer youth are feeling, going through, and hoping for - right here, right now across the U.S.

It's also no accident that it's the perfect small-ish size to stash in your locker or backpack so you can crack it open any time you're looking for some queer connection. :3

Not so friendly reminder that creating "dark" or "taboo" fiction can be a sign of childhood trauma!

More below the cut. Warning: long post.

TW: Mentions of trauma, child abuse, and paraphilias

Hi. I'm someone who studies psychology and sociology, and someone who also happens to have an interest in this shipping discourse stuff.

So, back to what I said a few paragraphs ago: Creating "dark" or "taboo" fictional content can be a sign of childhood trauma.

How?

When a child goes through something they consider traumatic, their brain will play the situation on repeat subconsciously, which can cause hypervigilance and symptoms of PTSD.

A common sign of PTSD in young children is that they will reenact their trauma with things like dolls, drawings, figures, and basically any other thing they can use to express their thoughts.

For example, a child who has gone through physical abuse may reenact similar things with their toys, such as making their dolls hit or yell at each other.

This symptom isn't limited to children, though. It is a symptom closely related to the presence of flashbacks and nightmares.

Many artists will create a "self-insert" character, "sona," or a character who is otherwise much like it's creator; when an artist creates a character like this and also has past trauma, their symptoms may reflect onto their character.

Projecting yourself onto characters can happen with other characters as well, even if you didn't make the character.

This is a healthy symptom. It shows that the brain is willing to become stronger from their trauma.

Reenacting trauma in ways that aren't harmful can help the brain process what happened to them, and can even help them deal with their trauma directly.

In order to heal trauma, you must know what your trauma is; you can't heal a wound you don't know you have.

While dark fiction creators are indulging in positive healing mechanisms, certain people will shun them for doing so.

"Antishippers" claim to be the "heroes" and to support healing, even though the thing that makes someone be considered and antishipper is if they're "anti healing through fiction."

Antishippers will throw the same ableist rhetorics around by claiming "if you ship adult x child you're a pedophile!" or "if you have age gap ships (even if both are consenting adults) you're a pedophile!"

This, not only is it hurting trauma survivors (especially those who have been harmed by those with paraphilic disorders), it is hurting EVERY disabled person.

Armchair diagnosis is not something anyone should do.

It is when there is little to no evidence that the condition exists within a person, though people still throw labels onto them to make them seem like they're a "bad guy." (Usually.)

This is also hurting people with actual paraphilias. Paraphilic disorder is real condition characterized by intrusive thoughts of a (usually abnormal or harmful-if-acted-on) sexual nature.

Even if someone claims to not be ableist but still demonizes and villainizes paraphilias, they're ableist.

Ableism is ableism.

And before an anti decides to call me a "pedo-apologist," go right ahead! You don't know what you're saying anyways.

There is a difference between a criminal and a disabled person.

Proship people do not support abuse. Anyone who claims to be proship but still supports abuse is NOT proship.

Of course anyone who makes dark content doesn't have to have past trauma.

There are many people who make dark content that don't have what they'd consider trauma, or think their trauma is unrelated to the content they create.

What if they did experience something traumatic in the future?

They'd be able to cope with it better, because they'd seen it in fiction before, so they'd know the impact of it, and how they could handle it.

Of course, not everyone who indulges in fiction will be able to handle it, though.

However, no matter if they have past trauma or not, assume the best when it comes to content creators.

They're creative and strong, and we should be thankful that they're adding onto fandom culture by just existing and doing what they love.

All people, no matter what fictional content they create, are beautiful in their own way and should be met with kindness and compassion.

Do not go out of your way to harass/abuse innocent people.

Do not go out of your way to be ableist towards content creators and content consumers.

Algumas pessoas têm dificuldade em falar sobre determinados assuntos com medo de que a conversa se transforme em uma briga. Com isso, evitam falar do problema, independente do tipo de relação. Quantas vezes você pensou em “deixar tal assunto pra lá” e seguiu como se nada tivesse acontecido? Então diante disso, trouxe algumas dicas que podem te ajudar a ter conversas difíceis no seu dia a dia:

Foque na resolução do problema: O objetivo é resolver o problema em questão e não falar apenas dele, é chegar em um consenso, acordo, resolução. Expresse seus sentimentos: Fale como se sente, se algo incomoda, se a ação do outro te afetou de alguma forma. Permita-se: Dê ao outro o benefício da dúvida. Tenha cuidado: Com o tom de voz e a emoção. O que você vier a sentir no momento da conversa como a raiva por exemplo, você pode dar uma pausa, respirar fundo e continuar a fala. Cuidado com o julgamento, apontamento, críticas e o comportamento defensivo. Pergunte: Procure escutar o outro e caso fique na dúvida de alguma questão, pergunte. Ao perguntar, você dá ao outro a chance de se expressar e com isso não cria suposições.

The world is dark for a minute or two. You can't see. What happened? Did you pass out? Were you blind?

But wait! Light? Your expression scrunches up as your eyes open to a squint, your hand raising to shield your poor eyes from the sudden attack.

From what your adjusting pupils can see, there's two men in front of you, both looking towards you with warm smiles. They hold their hands out, patiently waiting for you to gain your bearings and get up off the ground.

"Ah, Sleeping Beauty finally arises from their slumber, I see." The smaller, greyer man chortles as you take the man's hand and bring yourself to your feet. "Come come, dear. We must get you dressed. I assume nobody told you of the dress code, hm?" He links your arm with his and begins to stride in a direction you had not processed until now.

You finally take note of your surroundings. It appears that you have spawned into some... mansion or castle! The halls are glorious, each pillar and decoration meticulously crafted to perfection. The people inside- oh, They're just as fabulous as the hall itself. Each of them different and unique, yet holding similar qualities to one another... almost as if every person in that room was some... version... of the same people!

The two men, the brunette having yet to speak like the grey one prattling on, led you towards a room. "I assume you arrived in quite the rush! One as fashionably late as yourself mustn't have had the proper time to get ready," The smaller man continues, his mind never seeming to run out of topics to speak about. He and the taller man gently push you into a bedroom of sorts, an assortment of outfits splayed out on the bed itself.

You're not sure where you are, but you have a feeling you're going to have a good time tonight.

Big, rugged fireman Chris/Steve who cares more about helping others than about his own safety, and fearless, caring EMT Sebastian/Bucky who's immediately got Chris's number (figuratively at first, and later that night also literally) and tells him to sit the fuck down so he can check him out. Over. Whatever.

Chris only complies because he's a little woozy from the lack of oxygen and a lot stunned by this gorgeous EMT with the most beautiful eyes he's ever seen. He might even say that bit out loud, whoops. But he can't be held accountable for what he says while he's high on adrenaline and oxygen, okay? And Sebastian can't be blamed for going all red and flustered: he is on the site of a fire, after all (not to mention tending to the hottest guy in all of New York - the state, not the city)
