Favorite Character: (I absolutely HATE that question, why do I have to choose ?!?) I'd say Bokuto Koutarou but I also have 5 others in mind lol

Favorite Arc/Episode/Scene: The Tokyo Stage during S2 is my fave because my favorite characters get many screentime together, we see so many different people interact, and it's so fun to enjoy matches without the stress of the competition. I get to support anyone and not feel guilty about it !! Also there's Tsukki's character development, and there's my favorite scene in the anime (the Oya Oya Oya), and they all learn and work on new techniques and it's so cool !! (<- already rambling too much)

Character I Think is Underrated: Maybe Gosshiki ? He's such a baby I love him. I believe Tendou is very much loved so not underrated. Tanaka too. I know people love him but I think he deserves so much more. That man participated in EVERY MATCH, he NEVER got replaced and he doesn't have an ultra special attack and he's not the ace but he's sooooo reliable and cool. He's a caring sempai and a good player and an amazing friend and the only straight ally in a gay world lmaooo We don't appreciate him enough.

Character I Think is Overrated: When I'm not rewatching Haikyuu I think that Hinata and Atsumu are kinda overrated because yeah they're cool but they're not the bests and their characters (I know they're different) aren't the ones I love the most and also I think they're selfish. Then when I rewatches the episode for fun I4m so invested in everything and I just cannot not love them. So, no one is overrated actually.

Favorite Ship/Pairing: HAHA I won't answer that- Alright I will but keep it short. Let's say any popular ship that involves Tsukki, Kuroo, Bokuto, Akaashi and Kenma. Yes even the polyships. Yes. Any popular ship.

Something I Love About the Show/Movie: Everything. (<- only short answer I4m able to give)

BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA

Oh it's been a while since I've been in that fandom. I lost my hyperfixation 3 years ago and I don't even read the scans anymore. Let's do it anyway, maybe it'd wake some sparkle in me and I'd be able to finish my fanfictions !

Favorite Character: I used to say Present Mic or Bakugo and I'm not sure now. I think Aizawa-sensei is someone safe to say, he'd never not be in my Top 3.

Favorite Arc/Episode/Scene: It's been so long, I don't really know

Character I Think is Underrated: Hatsune Mei. I love her and I rarely see people talking about her (or maybe I'm not on the good side of the fandom). And Mina (I know she's loved but not enough)

Character I Think is Overrated: All Might, I don't really like him. Mineta of course, he deserves Hell.

Favorite Ship/Pairing: EraserMic. I didn't write 3 fanfics about those dumbass gay teachers to not put them here.

Something I Love About the Show/Movie: The theme is good : how should we build a society where almost everyone has a superpower ? How do you regulate that ? How do you classify people as heroes, vigilantes and villains ? How do childhood trauma and socioeconomic differences, and traditional cultures play on the development of the superpower and the life of a person ?

Favorite Character: Zuko. Also Toph.

Favorite Arc/Episode/Scene: The Boiling Rock episodes.

Character I Think is Underrated: I don't think there's one ? I just think Avatar Kyoshi is a bit misinterpreted because the fans love exaggerating, but nothing actually bad.

Character I Think is Overrated: Jet maybe. I just feel nothing about him outside the context of him

Favorite Ship/Pairing: Zukka Nation

Something I Love About the Show/Movie : It's just perfect ? Perfect representation of everything ? It shows so many delicate subjects (people -kids- involved in war, sexism, racism, denial, terrorism, propaganda, redemption, trauma) and it's just GOOD. Zuko returns to his abusive family and makes more mistakes. Sokka looks down on women despite living years of his life surrounded by them. Katara steals something because her ego is hurt. Aang hides something to his friends because he has abandonment issues. Toph is.... Toph. And it's so well written and perfect and good.

JUJUTSU KAISEN

I've done this one too but it's still hard to me lmaooo

Favorite Character: Geto Suguru and Gojo Satoru and Choso and Itadori Yuuji and-

Favorite Arc/Episode/Scene: Hidden Inventory Arc. The story should have stopped here. We don't need anything more come on it's fine. Everyone's happy and it's fine (episodes 4 and 5 don't exist)

Character I Think is Underrated: Ino Takuma. Protect him.

Character I Think is Overrated: That fucking Naoya Bitch. I learned his in the TOP 20 popularity poll ??? HOW THE FUCK ??????? I literally cannot see his face, it gives me nausea. I hate him so sincerely, I don't even want to think about him.

Favorite Ship/Pairing: You know, I know, we know. The strongest. The one and only. The curse me a little at the end. They're known by many names. Satosugu, Gego, Sugusato, Goge, SaltSugar, whatever you want.

Something I Love About the Show/Movie: It's literally a story about love. It is not a romance anime, but it is about love. The theme comes back so often. Suguru loved his friends and it doomed him. Satoru loved Suguru and became a teacher. Yuuta loved Rika and cursed her. Geto's family loved him. It's all about love and no one could convince me otherwise.

So excited to know that you also love Link Click...! I watched it first before JJK (I know, still kinda new in thw fandom), so Cheng Xiaoshi/ Lu Guang are special to me. And after 2nd season with that finale, wow, for me it feels like came out of a fanfic. So when I got to know Gojo/ Geto somehow they remind me of Cheng Xiaoshi/ Lu Guang, cause both couples are doomed by the narative....

And what do you think after you finished TGCF? Have you read the novels? Just so you know, it is worth it to collect the books. Their story is that good. Also when you finished it, most likely you'll also have some non-canon fav couples (I have 4 non canon fav couples from TGCF)....And have you watch MDZS or SVSSS?

Sorry for my rambling, MXTX is one of my favorite author ever and I like to talk about their works. (And now I'm still depressed with the latest JJK update and nervous with the BNHA update)......

OMG SEASON TWO FINALE OF LINK CLICK ABSOLUTELY SLAYED ME. Lu Guang, the enigma that you are. This whole time!? What a damn reveal! Just thinking about it, tbh, I'm gagged. I like to guess at things, obviously, but just never even fathomed.

I don't know if I'd mentioned that before RE: Gojo and Geto but same. It might be on an anime recommendation draft 😅 Like, sure, their character design is an obvious indication but it's really all the anguish bubbling just beneath the surface. And now I need to read all the source material because I'm not sure I can wait for them to animate (even though the animation is just 😘👌🏾

For background on my experience while watching TGCF, there are a lot of cultural/religious things that were completely out of my current realm of understanding re: ascension, conditions/relation of the supernatural beings discussed, etc. but I was still able to really enjoy it without and prompted curiosity to learn more before jumping into the novels. Like, having watched and read media informed by Japanese culture (and growing up on Inuyasha), you understand the idea of youkai, general types and their dispositions, even some religious aspects to practices by priestesses and even everyday people, etc. so it's a little easier to navigate. So getting into Chinese media of a certain time period where those beliefs and practices inform the story was a challenge but it also just kind of opens your eyes to how much you don't know which is exciting. I absolutely want to check out the books because I need to know Xie Lian's whole origin (including his 17th birthday and his parents backstory) and what transpired to have created the delicate soft spot San Lung has for him. I hadn't heard of SVSSS yet but MDZS is on my TBW and I'm wondering if watching it will help clarify my confusion from TGCF or if I should do some research ahead of time so I'm not as lost.

Never apologize, I love when people are inspired and passionate! Lol and makes the conversation I have with you guys feel less one sided (with my disproportionate essay responses haha). 💛 I'm sure I'll post when I start watching/reading any of the above so we can reconvene! I'm currently finishing up Stars Align and, from what I've gathered might need to add this to my TBR to get a satisfactory end to things, too. 😭

I've been running on an empty battery lately so Tumblr's really the only social media platform I've been consistently perusing and posting on (RIP to twitter, insta and tiktok, ig). The upside of this being that I see JJK and BNHA leaks less frequently so I'm out here living in ignorant bliss ✨ So if you're out in these virtual streets, be safe out there, anon!

BKDK fic recommendation

And now that I've expressed all my frustration in previous post, I am going to talk about BakuDeku and THE recommendation of the month.

So, yes, as already stated I love this ship (call me basic, but the rivals to lovers dynamic is one of my favorites) and more since Bakugo seems to have a REAL evolution in the cannon story.

He is exactly the kind of character I love (I accept I have a problem with secondary bad boy characters).

But, as usual, that does not mean I accept everything. My criteria for any prompt -including ships - to be sold to me is it to be well-written. If you are to tell me their relationship, I want you to convince me. And so I am particularly strict with fanfics.

I am a big fanfic lover, and I've been reading fics for SO LONG that I've now come used to filter them so I can find the hidden gems under the high amount of not-so-good stories. I know that fanfics are usually underestimated, and I want to fight that misconception, even if it comes from the fact that, as anybody can write fics, the level is not always that high (still very legitimate for these fics to exists, anybody should write fics if they want too). What I mean is that I am very exigent regarding fics.

And it has been a long time since I read an excellent one. Who could have told me that the first one I would look for in the BNHA fandom would be so PERFECT?

I've already talked about this fic (I shared the first chapters comics one marvelous user made- thanks @twyutd) , but it is time to talk about it properly:

THE WAY YOU USED TO DO , by edema_ruh on Archive of Your Own is the MOST AMAZING THING I have read in a while.

It had me completely scotched to my computer 3-days-long. It is so beautiful, well-written, and the pace! The scenes! The battles! The characters! Their development! The slow-burn love story! The longing! The friendships with the other members of the academy! The angst!!! I WILL REPEAT IT: THE ANGST!!

It is undoubtedly and INCREDIBLY well-written story, but of course, what your preferences are will have an impact on how do you like it.

For me it was perfect jam. Long, very long fic, with slow-burn love story, bkdk-centered, with changing point of view, and with A LOT OF ANGST and a happy ending. AND THE IDEA IS SO ORIGINAL. It is a soul-bound story and I just could think that if one day I want to write a romantic story it should be inspired by this one.

If you like any of this elements, you'll immensely enjoy it.

I am frankly obsessed, only can think about is drawing my fav scenes (omg the bkdk moments... ) I think the author really mastered their personality all that while telling an entertaining story.

The only thing I did not enjoyed that much was the least chapter, I found it too long, but I'll accept it anyway because this is 30 long chapters of GOLD.

Just seriously, if you like BNHA and ship BKDK go, now.

So, I've actually answered 😅 already for someone else so I'll leave a link to that one [here].

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

It won't be true for every one of my fics, but I always try to incorporate personal healing, and/or healthy relationships in my stories (especially the reader-inserts, since the focus is usually the personality of the reader's love interest). Characters asking for consent, or acting in a way that empowers or comforts the reader. As someone who naively walked into two consecutive Red Flags, I try to show my readers what a good, Green Flag partner might be like.

I also like to throw in a healthy dose of fluff at every corner, and though of course I do like to put a level of angst in some fics, it is ALWAYS followed up with comfort and a happy ending.

🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you write fanfic?

Absolutely! My partner knows and is 100% supportive, my closest circle of friends know, my family… well they know but I still don't think they completely understand it, but are still supportive. Even my work colleagues know since one of them found my YouTube, and their reactions varied but although some find is strange, others love that I'm openly nerdy and proud of my hobbies.

💖 What made you start writing?

Can you believe I've rewritten this answer at least 10 times? It's a culmination of things, I think. I was part of the Literature Gifted and Talented group at school so I was used to writing stories from an early age. I daydreamed whenever I was bored. I had this one daydream especially that kept cropping up, about being a cartoon character (thanks, The Pagemaster), and eventually I decided I wanted to get it out of my head and onto paper.

Then I started writing down all the vivid dreams I had, whenever I had them.

And then by the time I realised I was a weirdo kid that didn't make friends easily, I ended up really getting into anime and reading fanfics as a way to combat loneliness.

Quizilla was super popular back then so I ended up reading a butt-load of 'Who Will You End Up With' RPG quiz-stories including lots of Spin the Bottle, Snugglebug and 7 Minutes in Heaven romance reader-insert that really brought comfort to me (I have super-high Immersion and Suspension of Disbelief stats 😂😂). Eventually I decided to take a crack at them myself, since I figured there had to be other people out there who could benefit from comfort reader-insert fics like I did.

🏆 What’s your most popular fic?

Okay so I won't mention that N S F W story because it's a runaway success and none of my other fics come close in terms of stats.

HOWEVER.

Suitable for all ages, my most popular story seems to be Mistletoe (a Bakugou x Reader Christmas Fic), which to this day I am SO happy about because it was the first BNHA story I ever wrote, and I tried so damn hard to get inside Bakugou's head to write him into a romance story but also have him in-character.

It's probably the story I'm proudest of, and I still read it each Christmas because it's stuffed full of my favourite fluff tropes to put me in a fluffy, festive mood.

I had a dream and i want that one to be a reality because in the dream we were in my room at first and Shigaraki (who was waaaaayyyy hotter in the dream unlike in the anime) was our friend and we were all hanging out and he legit pulled out a thing with purple liquid in it which he activated so it glowed and it was apparently a bomb and were were trynna get it from him but then my parents called me and I went to the front door and closed my room door and they said they're going out to get some shoes. When they went I came back to my room and when I opened the door Shigaraki legit hid the gun (disguised as a NERF gun) in his hoodie so that we don't get caught by my parents so while he was struggling with that we all ran to an abandoned building (we being me, Izuku, Uraraka, Bakugou and Shouto). When we got there we fought him and he threw a camera cover at me and it had a similar bomb in it with green liquid and it was already activated and as it was about to burst I shoved myself along with the bomb at him but it was a fake and he had the real one one a half couch thing, between the pillows but then we got a chance to capture him and to capture him I had to pin him down to the half couch thing near a window and shouto flopped down on the other end coz he was tired and deku and uraraka were sitting on the couch and bakugou was just standing. I had to pin him down, which was basically straddling him and he was shit talking and then i told him to shut up and that I'll shove the thing up his ass and that I've read enough fanfics to know where it goes but then the real bomb was about to blast so I took it and kept it on his chest while still sitting on top of him but it didn't blast and then we were discussing what to do with him because I said I've read enough fanfics to also know that he can turn into a good guy and shouto looked at us was like '*nod nod*Yes she actually has read a lot of fan fiction' and it was just all because of AFO that he was bad. And one time in the middle I said the f work and shouto looked at me and shook his head disapprovingly. And then we we're talking and i said 'whatever, it's the same shit' while were talking ab sth happening to me

AND HE LEGIT PUSHED MY GLASSES UP AND TOLD ME 'Its not the same shit sweetheart.' In a VERY LOVING VOICE AND

DO YALL KNOW HOW FUCKING HOT THAT WAS??????? IT LEGIT HAD ME BREATHLESS AND MY HEART WAS THUMPING LIKE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. And like while we were discussing that we'll take him far away so the cops won't find him, I got a phone call and it was like we have the recordings ready and they're coming to arrest him and I was legit maD because BRO NO WE ARE GOING TO SAVE HIM NO MATTER WHAT AND we were on our way to become vigilantes but then my brother woke me up lmao

Anyways. The dream was amazing and I don't remember much details but it was amazing. Also If given the opportunity I would 10000000% rewatch that dream. 10/10 would recommend.

This is legit the second time I'm having a BNHA dream lmfao.

- Wonderfully complex time-travel au. Telling you too much will spoil anything, so all I’ll say is: if you’re a fan of scientific explanations for science fiction, deeply complex plots with lots of moving parts, and slow build mysteries, this is your fic.

Fake News by SonoSvegliato

- Criminally underrated fic in which Izuku is a very dedicated reporter. Starts out jokingly, then slaps you in the face with plot when you least expect it. Absolutely hysterical, too.

A House Divided Against Itself by BeyondTheClouds777

- After being offered (pushed into) a roll in the League of Villains at a young age, Izuku takes up the mantle of a false villain and plans to dismantle the League from the inside out. Lighthearted throughout, but gets heavier when the story demands it.

U.A.’s Resident Ghost by BeyondTheClouds777

- Izuku is a ghost who, after hunting down Aizawa, joins Class 1-A. Lots of mystery and a slow-build plot, as well as plenty of dadzawa and character development for Bakugou. A delight to read.

Dis(associate) by BeyondTheClouds777

- Izuku has a quirk that lets him ‘dissociate’ from his body and temporarily become a ghost. Absolutely phenomenal from beginning to end, with plenty of laughter-filled moments and emotional gut punches. If you’re a fan of Dad Might, OFA development and its past holders, or really just a good damn story, here you are. Completed, too.

Guillotine by PsychoLimbo

- Izuku is a vigilante with a deadpool-esque regeneration quirk and is hellbent on giving every cop in Musutafu a headache. Fast-paced, witty, and absolutely fucking hilarious, with a bitter General Education Izuku who’s ready to take the world by the reins.

- Another Izuku has a quirk au in which he has a strange, horrifying quirk with the ability to make people go insane. Heavy, but not nearly as dark as it sounds, with plenty of the criminally underrated dadmasa.

Rain Dance by draconicshinx

Pokemon AU thats far more than a simple pokemon journey plot. Izuku and his dratini are on the run from someone, traveling alongside Uraraka and Tsuyu. A delight to read, with some excellently-written pokemon battles and plenty of plot intrigue.

Dragon’s Blood by draconicshinx

- Fantasy AU, and in my opinion, the best of its kind. In which All Might and Izuku are weredragons, the only things capable of fighting attacking dragons, and are staying at UA while Izuku gets trained. Fantastic worldbuilding, creative takes on the characters, and all in all one of my absolute favorite fics.

Heard Yet Unnoticed by kittublu

- Another fantasy-esque au, in which Izuku has a quirk that allows him to both see and, with physical contact, transform into magical creatures. Lighthearted and goofy, with plenty of magical antics, colorful ocs, and hilarious character interactions.

and of course, Bloom in Winter by e_va

- Still my number one. Since a young age, Izuku has been forced to work for a group of villains at the risk of them killing his mom. Now, he’s been given a new assignment-- infiltrate and gather information on UA. Takes its subject matter seriously, with incredibly vivid writing, plenty of emotions, and enough guilt to power a train. Absolutely incredible.

Forgive me if I've missed this, and I imagine I may know some of the answer, but why won't you watch BNHA? Also, hard as it may be to find, there are probably quite a few non-romance fics in the fandom, so you can get some character fix without necessarily watching it? I did that for supernatural, i couldn't be arsed to watch the damn thing, too many damn episodes for any man to understand

Oh! Okay so full disclosure I have actually watched season one of BNHA and it wasn’t terrible or anything, I’ve watched far worse things (especially anime), and in fact, I really enjoyed at lot of it, primarily in the characters and concept (I really fucking love Ochako, Iida, Momo, and Izuku in particular), but there were just a couple of things that made me incapable of really enjoying the show as a whole and generally left me more annoyed than satisfied, so it just wasn’t a fun experience as a whole, which is why I really won’t be continuing it despite the fact that the fandom has some amazingly talented writers/editors/fanartists and I really do love a lot of the characters, but I just… can’t enjoy the series as a whole.

And the reasons I’m really adamant about not continuing it aren’t even for any social justice related (you’d think it’d be the sexualization of teen girls but unfortunately that’s pretty much an anime staple and I’ve watched way, way worse, so you know), it’s just because I got two main problems with the series:

1. Bakugo. I know he’s very popular in the fandom and I can definitely see why; Explosion McAsshole is absolutely a compelling character from an objective viewpoint, but I just fucking hate him. I can’t quite figure out why, exactly, but my best guess is that his motivation for being an asshole is too realistic. That’s the tl;dr and I’ll elaborate more under the cut (I’m…. so fucking long-winded), but basically I just can’t stand Sparky Sparky Boom Man.

But I could still probably stand to watch/read BNHA, if it wasn’t for problem no. 2: Izuku having a quirk

Like. Holy shit. I actually damn near dropped the whole show at ep 3 when they introduced that neat little tidbit. The tl;dr on why I hate it so much is basically this: it ruins the worldbuilding and Izuku’s character AND Bakugo’s character in one fell swoop and I have no fucking clue who anyone could ever think this was good writing. I’ve elaborated on it here already but I’ll do it under the cut as well because holy fuck I’m still mad about it.

And as for why I don’t really read fanfic for BNHA without watching the show, well. I just don’t like the fics. Every other fic is about Bakugo, whom I hate, and the other ones are all about Izuku either having a quirk, a romance, or some kind of tragic backstory that inevitably fridges his mom and turns him into a villain, and I don’t care for that shit at all. On top of that, my absolute faves in the show are Ochako and Iida, who are pretty much never the center of a fic (you’d be lucky to find one where Iida is even a proper supporting character tbh). And also, I just think that a lot of the characterization in general suffers from what I call Large Fandom Syndrome, where a large quantity of people create an echo chamber of bad ideas that inevitably ends up making the characters into caricatures of their canon or even properly developed fanon self, and I just… don’t care. I’m not here for it. Give me 3D characters or give me death.

That said I have read some fic of it in the past, and there are even a couple I genuinely enjoyed despite them being centered around characters that I don’t care for, and if anyone has good fic recs for the characters I like best and/or just good fics in general I’m definitely here for it, but mostly, sifting through BNHA’s ao3 feels like all the work of slogging through a large fandom with none of the pay-off.

So yeah that’s the abridged version, head on under the cut for The Full Salt on Why Tumblr User Arodumabass Refuses To Watch/Read BNHA, Despite Actually Liking The Characters and Concept A Lot.

So, about Bakugo. Like I said, my main problem is that his motive is too realistic; often, bully type characters are given some tragic backstory (usually an abusive family) for the reason they bully people in a bid to make them more sympathetic. While I despise this trope, I gotta admit that it kinda does work, since… well, I sure hate Bakugo more than any of those characters.

Unless I missed something important in canon, Bakugo’s main motivation for being a dick is that he was told throughout this childhood that, because of his strong quirk, he was superior to people, and he’s since internalized this mindset. This is definitely realistic, since the reason people get bullied irl isn’t because all bullies are abused or some shit, but because society just likes to tell kids that ‘weird’ people deserve to be bullied because ‘normal’ people are superior. So, you know, kudos to whoever wrote the manga for getting that right.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t make him any more likeable to me, and I know that he’s on the road for a redemption arc, but seeing him mad that Izuku is finally finding a place where he can feel safe just because Bakugo’s now not the Absolute Powerhouse he was in middle school anymore (yes, yes, I know it’s a little more complicated than that, but honestly, it doesn’t fucking feel like it), and then seeing the fandom just absolutely loving him leaves a very, very bad taste in my mouth, to the point where he almost singlehandedly ruins the show for me.

Now, onto point no. 2: Izuku Not Having A Quirk Is The Worst.

Okay, so. BNHA’s world was basically introduced as a deeply flawed world right from the start. The opening episodes, Bakugo’s entire character, and even the way the entry exam/hero course is set up make it very clear that this world does not consider quirkless people to be at the same level as people who do have quirks. Izuku is repeatedly told that it’ll be impossible for him to become a hero, despite the fact that he clearly has the strategical smarts and drive to be one and could at the very least be a background helper, and adults seem to completely ignore the fact that Bakugo and basically everyone else bullies him relentlessly for something that he can’t help. The show makes it very, very clear that quirkless people, in the world of BNHA, are essentially disabled; they are locked out of certain job fields, bullied for something that manifests as a physical disability (basically), and the system as a whole just plain doesn’t seem to care about them.

Literally any other piece of media with this kind of set-up would start deconstructing that entire idea, that what is essentially a genetic defect would automatically make you useless to society. But BNHA decides ‘eh, who needs useful worldbuilding, we can give Izuku a superpower and be done with it!’

Excuse me? The fuck, kind sir?

After Izuku gets a quirk, the whole ‘quirkless people are disadvantaged in society and can’t be heroes’ is completely forgotten about. I’ve heard there’s some minor quirkless character later on in the story, but for something that got such a huge set up, there just isn’t any pay-off. This results in a story that doesn’t challenge and even actively encourages an in-universe system that is absolutely awful and just plain bad (and also, you know, since quirkless people are definitely a disability metaphor, it has some very unintentional Implications that I’m not fond of).

Not to mention that Izuku getting a quirk makes his character about 200% less interesting. Suddenly, he’s not the underdog anymore. He has something to prove, yes, but it’s primarily to himself and maybe Bakugo. Everyone else just knows him as ‘that kid with the super strong quirk who goes way too fucking hard’. They already respect him right of the bat, and Izuku doesn’t have any real obstacle to fight against aside from the villain of the week and his own stupid recklessness, and that just isn’t as compelling as a protag who fights against all that, and a broken system that’s intent on keeping him from his dreams. He also becomes a lot less relatable since we, the audience, obviously don’t have superpowers, so gaining one distances him from us.

Also it’s not like a powerless superhero would be a new idea. Fucking Batman exists. Green Arrow. Iron Man. Clint Barton. I could name a couple more. There’s a real precedent for heroes without superpowers, and the fact that BNHA instead decided to just say ‘welp, you can’t be a real hero without powers’ just… baffles me. ESPECIALLY when Izuku already had the perfect set-up for being a powerless hero: his analytical skills alone could’ve easily given him an advantage on the battle field, especially when coupled with the fact that villains would be frustrated trying to find his quirk. when it doesn’t fucking exist. Hell, doesn’t BNHA have a main baddie who can steal quirks? I mean???? Why the fuck does this kid have a quirk when his entire character would clearly work so much better without one?

And Bakugo. Like. I hate this bitch. But you know what would’ve made his character arc of being jealous of Izuku better? Izuku actually being quirkless.

Bakugo’s whole entire deal is that he’s essentially the disillusioned gifted kid, who was constantly told throughout elementary and middle school that he was special, that he would go far, and then he actually got into a school with people who were just as smart as him and realized that he wasn’t actually that special. Bakugo internalized the mindset that he was better than anyone else, and now that he’s slowly proven wrong with people who just don’t take him serious because they’re about as strong as he is infuriates him. What’s more, it gives him a giant inferiority complex, that says ‘if you’re not the best, you’re nothing at all’, which he deals with by lashing out.

Izuku is basically the epitome of that whole predicament. A kid who Bakugo has bullied pretty much his entire life, held under his thumb by the notion that Bakugo was better than him and would always be better than him. The fact that Izuku not only got into the same school and track as Bakugo, but is also clearly better at this whole hero thing than he is makes him fucked up mad because Bakugo has always seen Izuku as inferior to him, so if even Deku is better than him now, where does that leave Bakugo? So he lashes out and is a giant dick about it.

Only. This doesn’t really work, does it? Izuku has a quirk now. Bakugo doesn’t know why (or I think he’s figured it out by now, but in the beginning he didn’t at least), but it’s clear that Izuku has leveled up. And it’s a damn powerful quirk as well. Bakugo’s whole ‘even fucking Deku is stronger than me’ anger issues and inferiority complex kind of falls apart when you realize that, to Bakugo, this isn’t the same Izuku he’s known all his life. This is a new one, a better one, with a strong quirk. It really doesn’t make much sense for Bakugo to be this affected by Izuku surpassing him, when it’s clear that the kid had a goddamn cheat code to do so.

His entire arc would be so much better if Izuku had stayed quirkless. Then we could actually have Bakugo unlearn his toxic internalized ideas of superiority, because as it stands now, the logical conclusion for his character arc would be ‘well there are people with stronger quirks than I have, and I shouldn’t have bullied Izuku because he had the potential to be powerful all along’, rather than ‘my powerful quirk doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, what matters is having a solid moral compass and hero instincts, and I shouldn’t have bullied Izuku because that was immoral’, which is what it should be. It’s a slight difference, but it’s a difference between a character I can stand and a character I cannot.

(I mean, I’m not saying BNHA is definitely not going with option 2 here, but I’m saying that if they do, it would be unearned.)

Anyway thanks for reading my fucking essay but the tl;dr is that BNHA’s narrative was weakened by the fact that whoever wrote it was a fucking coward and took the easy way out by giving Izuku a quirk and I fucking hate it, so now every time I watch BNHA all I can think of is ‘man this would be so good if only the writer actually knew what he was doing. and also if bakugo would shut up for a hot sec’.
