I haven’t seen anyone ask you this, I’m sorry if someone has and you can ignore, but you obviously love Joel, it’s clear from the way you write him, and you don’t like the series. I hope this doesn’t come off rude, but I’m just wondering why?

I got this last night and I had to sit on it haha. Definitely not rude! But I have an answer that honestly makes more sense even to me now after some introspection and a chat with a friend about it and handling PTSD. Turned out longish so I put it under a cut.

I prefer game Joel because he’s me lol. The way he carries his trauma, how he locks it away, mostly avoids it and somehow thinks that’s going to work? That’s me. I think it’s why the scene with him crying about it was so…off putting to me. I would never do that, and neither would the game version. They’ve made him into this character they think general audiences will resonate more with making him outwardly sad and vulnerable instead of emotionally closed for fucking business, and I’m sitting here feeling a little invalidated I suppose? Like someone like me wasn’t good enough for people to like them, so we had to “fix” him. Obviously, I have my Ellie’s that have broken in, but it never looked like this. It looked like the relationship in the game. They could have shown how Ellie was breaking in without all this crying and showmanship, they’ve already done it very well in the game and Pedro is exceptionally skilled. They just chose not to keep the character true to the original.

That, and I’m typically a person who will always prefer the first version of a character or story. If HBO Joel wasn’t so far off from the original, I’d probably be moderately enjoying it (although they leave some loose ends and have introduced a lot of things poorly that were used for one plot point and then forgotten which bothers me too).

People are self-censoring sex to seggs and $3× but every other ad you see is still filled with half-naked women. Rightwingers want queer people arrested for so much as existing in the same postal code as a child and are also drumming up a moral panic about how teenage boys aren't getting laid enough.
