Y Hen Llinge and all that: Welsh in The Witcher Series (glossary)

This post is largely my GDrive notes on this subject, but I am a Welsh speaker and have noticed Welsh cropping up a lot in the Witcher series. I'm going to go into a few examples in this post- a word of warning though, there may be spoilers, which I'll mark with a SPOILER WARNING.

The Wiki List:

The wiki contains a glossary of Hen Llinge words alongside their real-world inspirations. Hen Llinge isn't based on Welsh alone, but also Irish, German, English and Latin (among others). The list on the wiki has the following terms marked down as being inspired by Welsh (which I have compiled):

Non-feline pets:

Lotus pier: Pomeranians, legacy of Jiang Cheng. Each and every one of them has a 5 words long name, flower accessories, and more diva-ish attitude than the met gala assemble. Also, any random stray dog from Yunmeng dropping by for treats and pets is enthusiastically received by Jiang Fengmian.

Nie HuaiSang: A bearded dragon and 2 budgies and a cockatoo that has a vocabulary to shame an average sailor. Has stopped keeping hamsters after many heartbreaks and frantic tearing down of drywalls and reaping out floorboards. Is trying to get a python but Da-ge has finally put his foot firmly down.

Madam Jin: Lhasa Apso that travels in her purse and judges everyone they come across. Only accepts pets from Madam Jin and once in a blue moon from Jin Ling. Likes to pee in Jin Guangshan's shoes.

Cangse Sanren and Wei ChangZe: Own a sanctuary farm with rogue goats, an arthritic horse, a murderous gaggle of assorted ducks and geese, 2 mild alpacas, bunch of agoraphobic hens and a donkey that's massively crushing on Cangse Sanren and will move into the house the moment Wei ChangZe kicks the proverbial bucket. Also a colony of feral farm cats and 2 farm dogs who think they are the boss of this outfit.

Xue Yang: A pet rock that he has already put a crack in.

Jin Ling: Fairy, the bestest best girl.

I could say WWX, because I do love to write WWX as JC's gremlin BFF in my sangcheng fics, but if we're being honest, I also think canonically they are way too intense about each other to be "brotp" (honestly I'm a closet chengxian enjoyer).

So I'm going to say I think JC and NMJ would get along really well and would really enjoy going for a beer together in modern aus.

OTP

As far as headcanons and fanfic, sangcheng. I love them together. I'm obsessed with them. Still going over 3 years later, I've written more fic for them than for any other ship. At heart, it's the teenage friends to lovers aspect, but also that they each, on their own have gone through so much loss and pain and anger... including JC's anger at NHS for putting Jin Ling in danger, no, I never forget THAT. But I think after all that, they can understand each other better than most. They can understand the anger and pain and what you are willing to do for that.

And then if speaking strictly canon-based, there's chengxian, which is... everything that it is. Which is SO much. I don't write fic for it or seek it out, but I did very much go through the book reading JC as in love with WWX.

JC was LQR's favorite guest student that year, and JC greatly respects LQR and values his opinion. Over the years, the mutual respect grew, and they both enjoy getting together for tea and conversation whenever they have a chance.

I do not enjoy bottom Jiang Cheng.

Nor do I vibe with the "fandom bicycle" allcheng mindset that enjoys putting him together with any and all, largely because I do see him as very ace/demi. I don't think he gets around very much at all.

Other than the obvious Hen Bie and the fanmade Swan Goose's Journey (which is BEAUTIFUL), it is absolutely Prince's When Doves Cry, because a now gone JC video to that song is what got me to decide to check out MDZS, and after about 10 seconds I knew I would love Jiang Cheng. Also, it REALLY fits Jiang Cheng.

Shen Yuan shixiong AU - Part 14

Upon returning to the sect, Shen Yuan goes to report his work to the sect master and his shizun. When everything has been said, Yue Qingyuan surprisingly praises Shen Yuan for his skills while Shen Qingqiu states a little more reasonably that he will not permit him to go out again without an emergency summoning talisman. Yue Qingyuan seems happy to hear that and a gentle smile spreads on his face. “Shidi is so doting with his first disciple. Shizhi is very lucky.” Which earns him a "Hmph!" and an angry silence. Shen Yuan, used to their (comedy) routine, ignores them both with a polite smile. (He had tried mending things between them before, but to no avail. His shizun refused to tell him anything and the Yue Qingyuan always gave him a kicked puppy expression whenever he mentioned their relationship and it drove him crazy.)

To consolidate his new foundation and gained techniques, Shen Yuan asks his shizun if he can enter seclusion, to which Shen Qingqiu eventually agrees. His expression still as cold as usual, the latter fills his disciple's hands with various immortal medicines like a mother hen. (Mu Qingfang and Qi Qingqi, who were passing by, both try to fight the urge to laugh when seeing the look of hopelessness on Shen Yuan's face as the elixirs and small bottles starts to form a small mountain in his arms.) Shen Qingqiu then tells Shen Yuan to use the Ling Xi Caves, usually reserved for the seniors in the sect, instead of the low-level ones, confusing his disciple. The latter knew his shizun planned on using the spiritual caves himself, but now seems to have changed his mind… why? Before he’s able to ask, Yue Qingyuan gives his consent. Shen Yuan bows to his shizun and shibo, and returns to his room to tidy up before entering seclusion.

There, he finds Luo Binghe studying his old cultivation book that he gifted him on their way back from the city. Seeing him enter, his shidi puts the book down and Shen Yuan can see additional notes written in the margins, next to his own, giving the book a rather chaotic energy. Shen Yuan can’t help but smile at the sight. “Binghe, you have to study even harder from now on. Shixiong is leaving to enter seclusion.”

A few hours later. Shen Yuan enters the Ling Xi Caves and instantly marvels at the ethereal atmosphere. Feeling like a kid in a toy shop looking at all those strange stones and plants, it takes his whole willpower not to crouch down and observe both the ground and walls. His sight eventually stops on the countless gashes and traces of both steel and sword glares, making him swallow his excitement. There was even dried blood… Shen Yuan shakes his head with a sight and goes to sit on the stone bed laying in the middle of the clear pool. But as soon as his mind is calm enough to enter meditation, he hears a strange sound. Panting?

He opens his eyes and glares at the opened system screen who was about to announce a new mission, but awkwardly feigns a bug under Shen Yuan angry gaze and disappears without a word. A burst of night-rampant spiritual energy shakes the cave. Oh. Shen Yuan knows what this is about. Grumbling, he stands up and goes to investigate.

Following the chaotic qi, he soon arrives at another cavern. There, a figure in white faces away from the entrance. There’s blood everywhere and a longsword is stuck in a nearby rock. Sword glares fly in every direction, without order or pattern, and creating terrifying tremors as they hit the cavern floor and walls. Shen Yuan gulps and starts regretting his decision of investigating. He’s way too low level for this!! Shen Yuan nervously looks around, mulling over his options. This was one frighteningly bad qi deviation!

A piercing sound coming from the man’s sword startles him. Engraved incantations on the hilt, silver phoenix and flowing stream patterns… Oh no. But it’s already too late. The man’s head swings around, his bloodshot eyes falling on him like a predator.

The system seems to think that this exact moment is the most appropriate one to finally announce the mission: “Change the fate of the qi deviating Liu Qingge.” Shen Yuan cannot help but scream “Oh my god, SHUT UP!!” as his whole body follows his survival instinct and tries to flee. But the longsword finally decides to listen to his master and violently blocks his way by almost cutting his head off.

Trembling in fear, Shen Yuan turns to his shishu who is already charging him. The man pushes him to the ground with a growl. Terrified, Shen Yuan tries to push away Liu Qingge. “SHISHU! IT’S ME! SHEN YUAN!” His shishu freezes for a split second after hearing those words and Shen Yuan takes the opportunity to gather all the qi he can muster in this brief moment and fires a blow at the other man’s chest.

Communicate with me! I will not know what is going on if you don't communicate. If there's a scene you want to do, if you have to be offline for a while, etc don't be afraid to talk to me! I will do the same.

I welcome any and all identity headcanons except if you make gay characters straight. I often headcanon characters as trans myself.

I am open to ship suggestions, I will tell you if it makes me uncomfortable but if you suggest an obviously problematic ship I will simply block you.

I prefer long responses, but I will try my best to match whatever length you use.

I will not play abusive characters if they are a main character. If they're a side character that is fine, but if they are a main character I won't do it.

I do not have triggers but if you're going to include something that could be triggering please warn me first, it makes me uncomfortable when those kinds of things are suddenly sprung on me.

If you do not follow these rules you will be given a max of three warnings before I will just block you and/or stop replying.

New idea for a fantasy campaign

A Dragon is a curse/illness/mutation.

As in, in this world, sometimes, seemingly on random, an animal, an object, vegetation even meals can become a dragon hybrid. Like a hen dragon, a oak dragon, a table dragon, a boiled egg dragon.

They come in two forms: the dragon ling where they keep their original size and multiple members of the pack are mutated. And Dragon : only one who grows to regular dragon size and is more dangerous.

The players characters are part of the group dealing with this spreading illness.

Lingshan Hermit: Self-awareness & Understanding Others

In the world, there's a peculiar object known as the "Deception Ruler". This device excels in misleading, marking a single unit as two and portraying the short as long. It's often used by individuals as a means to delude themselves, offering momentary comfort. While many dismiss it as a mere plaything, its existence is a reflection of society's inclinations. The vast majority are blinded to the pitfalls of self-deception, often indulging in this act, mistaking falsehood for truth. Over time, when deceit becomes ingrained, the ability to discern truth diminishes, and one drifts further from the righteous path.

Mahayana Buddhism emphasizes both self-awareness and the understanding of others. Setting aside the latter, we focus on the former. To attain self-awareness, one must initially possess the clarity of self-recognition. Those enlightened with self-understanding can pinpoint their deficiencies, allowing continuous introspection, improvement, and learning. Those devoid of self-recognition also lack the insight to understand others. If one fails to recognize their own shortcomings, they'll inevitably overlook the virtues of others. Without acknowledging one's weaknesses, there's no foundation for learning, and similarly, not recognizing the strengths in others also hinders one's education. Today, with many inclined towards self-deception, such deceptive tools find their place in society. The danger of this tool isn't its potential to strip one of self-awareness – those who lack it have long been devoid of it. Instead, it exacerbates the illusion, emboldening those who should be humbler, likening them to a mere civet thinking it's a tiger. Everything in the world has its role and position: hens lay eggs, eagles soar – these are their inherent duties. If a hen harbors aspirations of being an eagle, it would never find contentment in its own nest, and if an eagle doesn't relish soaring, disorder ensues. From my years of observation, practitioners who falter are invariably masters of self-deception. Such individuals, blinded by their own delusions, fail to confront reality. Consequently, if spiritual seekers revel in self-deception, all their endeavors are futile.

The Elder Runes from The Witcher

This is the writing system I created for Hen Linge, the language I created for Netflix's The Witcher. In order to preserve Sapkowski's irregular romanization system, I created the runes specifically to maintain all of the spellings of the words as he created them. This allowed me to romanize them regularly for the actors while retaining his original work.

I've been replaying the witcher 3 and noting every instance of Elder Speech so I can do an analysis of the not-Welsh included in the language. Like, on the one hand, more awareness of Welsh is good, on the other, if it's really mangled Welsh, it isn't quite so good!

As I had re-read THE DIVINERS Series again, i realized that i see some characters as certain actors (so here is my DIVINERS fancast)-i think i keep adding to this if i will have more ideas in my mind.
