Which of these defence mechanisms is best for you?
Tumblr media
Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory is where defence systems were first explained. These defence mechanisms, according to Freud, help maintain "mental equilibrium by shielding the conscious mind from conflicts between the animalistic id and the idealistic superego.
Defense mechanisms are psychological techniques that people employ to shield themselves from unpleasant feelings, circumstances, or events. They can be used to deal with tension, anxiety, or other types of psychological distress and are frequently automatic and unconscious.
There are several different types of defense mechanisms, each with its own unique characteristics and functions.
1. Displacement :- This involves redirecting negative emotions or impulses onto a less threatening target. For example, someone who is angry with their boss may come home and take out their anger on their spouse or children.
2. Denial :- This involves denying or rejecting the reality of a situation or emotion in order to avoid feeling pain or discomfort. For example, someone who has a drinking problem may deny that they have a problem or refuse to acknowledge the negative consequences of their drinking.
3. Sublimation :- This involves channeling negative emotions or impulses into socially acceptable behaviors or activities. For example, someone who has a lot of anger may channel that energy into playing sports or other physical activities.
4. Projection :- This involves attributing one's own thoughts, feelings, or behaviors to someone else in order to avoid taking responsibility for them. For example, someone who is jealous of a friend's success may accuse the friend of being jealous of them instead.
5. Intellectualization :- Intellectualization reduces anxiousness by allowing for clinical, detached reflection on events. This defence mechanism allows us to avoid the stressful, emotional aspects of the issue and focus only on the cognitive component.
6. Rationalization :- This involves creating logical, but often false, explanations for one's thoughts, feelings, or behaviors in order to justify them. For example, someone who procrastinates may rationalize their behaviour by saying that they work better under pressure.
7. Regression :- Reaction formation reduces anxiety by embracing the opposing feeling, impulse, or behaviour. Acting overly amicable with someone you despise to hide your true emotions would be an example of reaction formation.
8. Creation of Reactions :- Reaction formation reduces anxiety by embracing the opposing feeling, impulse, or behaviour. Acting overly amicable with someone you despise to hide your true emotions would be an example of reaction formation.

What Are the Defense Mechanisms?
Defense mechanisms, according to Anna Freud, are "unconscious resources used by the ego" to eventually lessen internal stress. These subliminal strategies are frequently developed by patients to lessen internal conflict, particularly that between the superego and id.
The id is the part of a person's personality that attempts to satiate all of their needs, wants, and urges. The most basic and primal aspect of our personalities is the id, which doesn't consider morality, social propriety, or even the probability that our wants and needs will be satisfied.
The superego is the component of the psyche that tries to persuade the ego to act morally and idealistically. The superego is made up of the internalised ideals and values we absorb from our parents, other family members, religious influences, and culture.

How to Handle Unhealthy Defense Mechanisms?
Unhealthy defence mechanisms can harm a person's relationships with others as well as their emotional health. When these mechanisms are being used excessively or improperly, it is critical to identify them and take action to resolve them. The following advice can be used to deal with harmful defence mechanisms:
1. Identify the defense mechanism: The first step in handling unhealthy defense mechanisms is to identify them. Recognize when you are using a defense mechanism and try to understand why you are using it. Are you trying to avoid a difficult emotion or situation? Are you trying to protect yourself from harm? Once you understand the purpose of the defense mechanism, you can begin to work on healthier coping strategies.
2. Challenge the defense mechanism: Once you have identified the defense mechanism, challenge it. Ask yourself if the defense mechanism is helping you or if it is causing harm. Are you avoiding a necessary conversation or action? Are you causing harm to yourself or others by using the defense mechanism? Challenge the thoughts and behaviors associated with the defense mechanism and consider alternatives.
   3. Seek support: It can be difficult to address unhealthy defense mechanisms on your own. Seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional. A therapist can help you identify and understand your defense mechanisms and work with you to develop healthier coping strategies.
In conclusion, unhealthy defense mechanisms can have negative effects on an individual's mental health and relationships with others. It is important to identify and challenge these mechanisms, seek support, practice self-care, and be patient and persistent in addressing them. With time and effort, it is possible to develop healthier coping strategies and overcome unhealthy defense mechanisms.
Consult an online therapist who made sure you felt comfortable enough to share your thoughts without any concerns.

4, 11, 24, and 26 for Ady, please! Tell me all about her!
Hi Kris tysm 🩵you can hear all about her this baby has so much lore in her!
4. What hobbies does your Tav have? How did they acquire these interests?
Music, obviously, but she also likes other art forms like dance and watching plays. She also draws incredibly badly. Stick figures. But she likes to do stupid doodles like that from time to time. Like Karlach is holding a cool sword we found, and is like "Someone draw me posing with this!" Ady will. It will not be good, but it will definitely be A Drawing. Her sheet music kind of doubles as a diary/place to just jot down her random thoughts so she "journals" I guess in the loosest sense of the word. She will occasionally pick up a popular trashy romance novel for shits and giggles, and she is also a professional shit-talker gossip information gatherer. She will play a pub game or two if asked.
11. What would your Tav consider to be their greatest flaw? Is this accurate?
That she’s a coward. This is not correct. She gets scared, yes. Probably a lot. It doesn't always show, and sometimes it IS a show of fear that's a little bit of a production, but she mixes up bravery and stupid recklessness a lot and feels she is prone to more of the latter than the former.
24. What first impression does your Tav give off to strangers?
Honestly, this is another thing that is situational, but generally from like...an outside perspective where she has no idea what shes walking into...A bit smarmy? But very disarming. She has a way of talking to people she's just met like they've been friends for years and it either works very well, or fails spectacularly. She can come off a bit like shes trying to sell you something, especially true if its someone who she knows will not like her As A Person or is probably going to be indifferent or straight up antagonistic to her. Hashtag defensemechanism hastag gogotraumaresponsefawn
26.Does your Tav have a treasured item with them? If yes, what is it and why is it special? If no, how do they feel about item sentimentality in general?
Her violin. When she grew out of the practice child-sized one, her father commissioned it since she's a lefty (she became ambidextrous in playing because there weren't many left-handed options) and hand painted little flowers and designs on it. It is her most prized possession and she has taken immaculate care of it, especially compared to how rough she is with her other items. It was the last gift she ever got from her dad. Its looking a little more worn down nowadays but she cannot bear to part with it, and is in loathe to use it less in favor for a generic one.

If we live long enough, it happens to us all: The world, full of cold indifference to our golden-calf agendas, infiltrates our beating heart with its ragged claws—and pulls. With a single gesture, the ego is uprooted, leaving our bare awareness of self throbbing in monolog: “Feel! CONNECT!! Change! GROW!!” Eventually, we all stumble into conflicts that trigger us, challenging our self-awareness…

I was at a job interview recently (SURPRISE) and was asked if leaders are born or made. I'll write a separate article about how fucking stupid that was.
Are femme fatales born or made?
Are they made by men?
I am forced to take power back if I want to survive. Like a femme fatale would.
Realistically, there is no way to walk away and take your power back at the same time. You have to take your power back before you walk away. Otherwise who are you getting your power back from or how are you getting it back?
I just read an article that asserted essentially that the femme Fatale or revenge character was just another role the female was forced into. If that's the case then by nature every single role a woman (is in) she was forced into by "a man" or men or gender roles / the patriarchy.
My personal opinion is that the femme fatale is essentially a defense mechanism women develop over time and experience. If you wanna know how, I can tell you my life story
This is choppy bc I can't copy and paste well on my phone.

Splitting (psychology) :::
Failure in thought to bring together both positive qualities and negative aspects of people into a cohesive whole.
Splitting *aka* black-and-white thinking or all-or-nothing thinking is the failure in a person's thinking to bring together the dichotomy of both positive and negative qualities of the self andothers into a cohesive, realistic whole. It is a common defensemechanism. The individual tends to think in extremes (i.e, an individual's actions and motivations are all good or all bad with no middle ground)
Splitting was first described by Ronald Fairbairn in his formulation of object relations theory; it begins as the inability of the infant to combine the fulfilling aspects of the parents (the good object) and their unresponsive aspects (the unsatisfying object) into the same individuals, instead seeing the good andbad as separate.
In psychoanalytic theory this functions as a defense mechanism

"The most important tool to learn in life is how to detach emotionally from a situation and observe without personal bias. ▫️ Projecting is a defense mechanism people subconsciously employ in order to cope with difficult feelings or emotions. Reacting with emotions can distort what is really going on and most the time makes the situation worse and messy. ▫️ Instead when you are faced with a difficult situation, take a deep breathe and try to see all sides and perspectives so that you can move forward maturely and efficiently. Doing this can actually change the energy of the situation and transmute any negative energy into positivity and growth." An Anise Swallowtail caterpillar showing her bright orange stink horns. This is a defense mechanism. If they feel threatened, they will project orange stink horns out of their head and rub them on you. They DO stink. This caterpillar was returned to my parsley patch where she ate her fill, turned into a chrysalis and then a butterfly.

If only I could quieten the thoughts
That race in my mind
A petition to stop their insubordination
Onslaught, intimidation
My fragile mind
It can be unkind
The devil inside
She wears my skin
A doppelganger
For a time she has lead the charge
She has won battles and hardened my heart
My walls were breached some time ago
I am mutated and she has become me
Often appearing in the waking world
I linger somewhere in the crossfire
Between tender kindness that was my innocence
And reclamation of control that seemed long lost
I managed to love the devil
But the devil cannot love me in return
For I am resentment
And testament that the good do not always win
A cruel lesson,
Manifestations that seek to drive my life in directions that are obtuse to me
My shield has become a battering ram
And I am ill fitted for defense
