Solar Punk denouement
I wanted to talk about the details but Ty wouldn’t listen. My longest friend, dude who would hear me out no matter how far a part we were on something, but not this. I shouldn’t have been surprised. Everyone wants to forget the lost centuries. Ty was at least sympathetic
“The sun shines as bright as it ever did and the states are soaking in it! Things are good enough now but there’s still lots of hard work to do, nobody wants to be told a tragedy with no moral for them to follow. Why just feel bad? I’m just telling it to ya nice, man.”
Ty always acted like I needed a translator for everybody. He was right. But was he 100 on this? Nah, fuck that.
“What ya mean no moral? There’s so much to learn from that time that is about what we struggle with now!” Jay moaned. Instead of anger a pleading came through in their voice.
“People don’t care how we got here other than what they already believe. The environment is way better now, we live way better now. There’s nothing from back then that doesn’t just remind people of the zealot bandits or the fail states. And does it teach us how to deal with them or our own differences here?” He ended with a look that should’ve annoyed them more. But Jay got the point.
“Maybe.” Jay said this defiantly, but quickly felt the annoyance slip. A new emotion took its place as they started to veer off the path Ty was on. “Well, good. Tell me somethin when you find that yes, otherwise, deuce” Ty and Jay shot each other the age old sign at this. Jay kept an eye on him for a sec as he meandered over to the housing towers closest to the reservoir. He’d have his hands full today on overlapping holidays as CS in this ward. Ty always knew what to say to people though. If they weren’t acting too stupid.
“Even then, ha” Jay whispered as they changed focus on what lay ahead. Their Lost Centuries Historiography professor wanted them to meet on a hill overlooking the newest housing tower build site. Jay was too sly to believe it was an off day like the professor claimed. Those were the best days for learning. Glint from solar cells on a nearby tower caused their eyes to tear, as Jay got close to the meeting spot. The ‘maybe’ still rung in Jay’s head. The excitement of finding the connecting threads was mounting. There’s always something you can use now from history.

Hello! Have you considered: Team Blackout? Our team consists of photophobic night owls who seek to kill the sun, for the safety of all! We're not talking Solgaleo here; we like cats. We just think the sun needs to die. Fuck that ball of fire.
Benefits of our cause!
Reduced risk of solar flares: In 1859, a massive solar flare and geomagnetic storm hit the Earth. Magnetic storms induce electric currents in wires. Unfortunately for us, by 1859 we had wrapped the Earth in telegraph wires. The storm caused powerful currents in those wires, knocking out communications and in some cases causing telegraph equipment to catch fire.
Since 1859, we've wrapped the Earth in a lot more wires. If the Sun went out, this threat would be eliminated.
Improved satellite service: When a communications satellite passes in front of the Sun, the Sun can drown out the satellite's radio signal, causing an interruption in service. Deactivating the Sun would solve this problem.
Better astronomy: Without the Sun, ground-based observatories would be able to operate around the clock. The cooler air would create less atmospheric noise, which would reduce the load on adaptive optics systems and allow for sharper images.
Stable dust: Without sunlight, there would be no Poynting–Robertson drag, which means we would finally be able to place dust into a stable orbit around the Sun without the orbits decaying. I’m not sure whether anyone wants to do that, but you never know.
Cheaper trade: Time zones make trade more expensive; it's harder to do business with someone if their office hours don't overlap with yours. If the Sun went out, it would eliminate the need for time zones, allowing us all to switch to UTC and give a boost to the global economy. Wouldn't it be great if you could be on the same sleep cycle as all of your online friends?
Safer Children: According to the North Unova Department of Health, babies younger than six months should be kept out of direct sunlight. Without sunlight, our children would be safer.
Safer cargo pilots: Many people sneeze when exposed to bright sunlight. The reasons for this reflex are unknown, and it may pose a danger to pilots during flight. If the Sun went dark, it would mitigate this danger to our pilots.
Safer parsnip: Wild parsnip is a surprisingly nasty plant. Its leaves contain chemicals called furocoumarins, which can be absorbed by human skin without causing symptoms ... at first. However, when the skin is then exposed to sunlight (even days or weeks later), the furocoumarins cause a nasty chemical burn. This is called phytophotodermatitis. A darkened Sun would liberate us from the parsnip threat.
In conclusion, if the Sun went out, we would see a variety of benefits across many areas of our lives! Consider joining today! Fuck the sun!
You’re forgetting that we would all freeze and die. I’m used to teams not thinking things through but this is… a bit more than usual, actually. Wow.

Can PEP Treatment Effective on HIV
The disease is quite hazardous. Like termites, HIV eats its victims. The end outcome is that he gradually becomes hollow inside. Man must take care of himself and make every effort to be healthy.
Several factors, including the ones listed below, may result in HIV: sever the connection by having your parents give you blood that was HIV-positive ever when you were a small child receiving an injection from an HIV-positive individual having many infections at once. But don't worry, you can avoid getting HIV by following these instructions. Always use high-quality condoms once you start dating and keep in mind that your partner is HIV-negative. Before having an HIV test done to be sure before establishing a family, confirm your status and that of your partner. Your unborn kid won't be at risk for HIV.
Before extracting blood from another individual, be sure it is clean and HIV-free. When getting an injection in a clinic or lab, make sure the syringe is sealed in front of you, and the person taking your blood should handle it properly and wear gloves. To prevent blood pollution, take care to avoid contracting many ailments at once.
What occurs if conditions exist that result in HIV infection?
HIV can be cured and its symptoms can be reduced using the techniques outlined below. Speak with a medical professional who focuses on HIV and acquire the appropriate advice from him. Verify if you have an HIV infection before treating it or hiding it. Please let anyone into your home.
Follow Don't rely on others to take your prescription;
follow your daily instructions. When travelling, use additional caution to avoid damage and to make sure that no one unintentionally comes into touch with your blood. Maybe A person with HIV should hide their belongings from prying eyes. Watch what you eat very closely, eat more protein-rich meals, and avoid fried foods if at all possible. The sick individual must also understand how important it is to control their weight and keep it steady. be in any manner out of all proportion to his body.

We do provide 100% of effective treatment with ART and PEP medicines. We can all agree that dating is the most significant and enjoyable activity a person can engage in. The majority of individuals, regardless of gender, are uninformed of HIV and AIDS and do not know if they are infected with either of these diseases. We urge you to get frequent HIV testing if you having had sex with multiple partners without employing any safety precautions.
Why does PEP affect HIV's mode of action?
In medicine, the term PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is employed. It is a particular kind of medication that is used to prevent HIV infection after exposure to the virus. PEP, a combination of antiretroviral drugs, is given to people who may have been exposed to HIV through sexual contact, sharing needles or syringes, or other exposures. does not guarantee that no one will get the disease. The only course of action that is anticipated is a prophylactic one to reduce the likelihood of HIV transmission following a prospective interaction. Keep in mind that there are several HIV strains, some of which might mutate and evolve over time.
strains throughout the world. The way that HIV variations or strains spread, develop inside the body, and respond to antiretroviral drugs may vary genetically.
If you are concerned about HIV variants and treatment, I would suggest contacting with a medical professional who can provide you the most latest advice and information on HIV prevention. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) can be brought on by the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
PEP is commonly administered as soon as it is reasonably practicable after exposure, usually within 72 hours, even though it can still be helpful if administered up to 36 to 48 hours afterwards. To achieve the optimum outcomes, it is essential to take the medication for the whole 28 days. It is essential to keep in mind that PEP is not an HIV medication, and if left untreated, it might result in IDS). It aims to weaken the immunological system. However, because to improvements in medical research and medication, living with HIV is now manageable and offers a high quality of life. In this piece, we'll discuss a few of the most current HIV treatments.
ART stands for anti-retroviral therapy. A combination of medications known as antiretroviral treatment helps to control the virus and prevent it from infecting more body organs. The ART has three or more medications from at least two different drug classes. The ART therapy regimens are created while taking the patient's viral load, CD4 count, and other medical considerations into consideration.
ART reduces the viral load significantly in an effort to A virus cannot be detected in blood. Once the virus is under control, the immune system may recover itself and the patient may live a long and healthy life. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a daily anti-exposure medication, is available to those who have a high risk of developing HIV. Emtricitabine and tenofovir are the two medications that make up PrEP.
PrEP prevents the virus from spreading throughout the body after exposure. It's critical to strictly adhere to the instructions since PrEP is most effective when used often. Preventing Exposure (PEP) A medication that can be taken by those who have been exposed to HIV is called After Post-exposure Prophylaxis. Within 72 hours of a viral infection, PEP must start and endure for 28 days after exposure. at least 3 prescription medications At least two different medication classifications apply to PEP. PEP stops the virus from spreading within the body after exposure. PEP works beautifully when applied as instructed. Conclusion Living with HIV is tolerable with the assistance of the available medications.
As soon as a diagnosis is made, therapy must begin to prevent the virus from affecting immune function. ART is the major treatment option for those with HIV, and it must be taken exactly as directed. For persons who are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection and at risk of HIV transmission, PEP and PrEP are medications that may be helpful. With the help of your doctor, you should choose the best course of therapy for you. and endure for 28 days after exposure. at least 3 prescription medications At least two different medication classifications apply to PEP.

This was a similar task like before but researched information about the 1960s and support my answers in the work that I had used. This era was special as it changed a lot of things. Especially in fashion and new materials used that are in fashion to this day and still in use. I added some pictures from the 60s with the different and multiple styles of fashion they wore at that time, the honoured famous people, news, adverts and what they sell, Including the important and life-changing things that had a big impact and change to the future in a successful way and so many more.
youtube
This is a short video explaining to you about a quick brief with fashion throughout time in the early 60s, mid-60s and late 60s.this is clearly shown that fashion has changed throughout time and has improved massively since the Victorian era by creating new styles, and new materials, they had more knowledge given about clothing and fashion, music, technology etc.
Tumblr media
The Civil Rights Movement
The Civil Rights Movement started in the mid-50s although it carried on during the 60s. The Civil Rights movement was a political movement and campaign from 1954 to 1968 in the United States to abolish institutional racial segregation and discrimination throughout the United States also is known as an umbrella term for the many varieties of activism that sought to secure full political, social, and economic rights for African Americans. The Civil War officially abolished Slavery, but it didn’t end discrimination against Black people—they continued to endure the devastating effects of racism, mainly in the south. Black African Americans had less choice and advantage to access the education they needed to survive and the money they earned was not enough for them to pay their bills and taxes. White Americans would judge them and blame them as it was easy for them to get blamed by the police, government and even more they were to be punished, abused and violated in front of everyone to dehumanise them so they should be ashamed of themselves as to who they truly are and look like because they are black. They were treated unfairly and unevenly compared to the white Americans, making them feel like outsiders so they didn't fit in their country. Even the police did not want the black Americans here as they were unwelcomed by so many people, so the police also used crucial and shocking violence towards them with dogs chasing them around leading them to danger and suffering because of what they had done to them, Using whips, bats and so many other things to hurt them badly as they say the black Americans are not like us. They felt weak and unsafe as they couldn't protect themselves around others knowing they hate them for who they truly are.
youtube
Here is a bit of extra information about the cause of Civil Rights and how black Americans were treated before the 60s and during the 60s. Violence was massively a thing that they had to go through due to being who they really are. Being black was like a punishment for the white Americans so they used violence, disgust and hate towards all of them.
Tumblr media
Martin Luther King
Luther King was a very intelligent, important and persuasive man that reacted in diverse ways to convince and prove there is a better way to live. His message was to get across to millions of people and show them that there is another way to end all violent discrimination and segregation against black Americans. He was an inspirational person that everyone listened to in the 60s as he was so effective with his speech given, millions of people turned up just to listen to him and what he had to say. This man here gave the confidence to people across America to stand up for themselves as we are all humans and he believed that we should all live with equality and nothing less.Everyone gained a stand and had their own voice to have herd after Luthers famous and well known “I have a dream” speech. This really changed black Americans lives and this hate with violence against each other had to be stopped.Black lives matter with Luther as it was put to a stop. This shall always be remembered over long periods, years, and many to come do due to the big impact Luther king has made, managed to change the future.
youtube
Here is part of the “I have a dream "speech said by martin Luther word by word to put a stop of violence as it was not tolerated. Showing diversity and equality all around. He will always be remembered as the hero in America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elvis Presley
The 60s was a roller coaster decade, especially for Elvis, he starred in a series of Hollywood movies, and scored a series of hits in his original singles. Elvis was the most followed and respected person in the 60s as women and men loved him and were in love with him, his fashion, music, his moves and so much more as he was a role model for everyone. People wanted to be like him. He reminded his admirers of his talents with an electrifying television special in 1968, followed by the first of many sold-out Las vegas engagements in 1969. In the 60s, Elvis collected 12 memorable songs from the 1960s including his best movie songs: "it's now or never" or "return to Sender". He was an American singer Elvis Presley has had an extensive cultural impact. According to Rolling Stones, the original person who made rock n roll the international language of pop was Elvis. He was the king of rock and is still to this day as he was that popular and people still remember him like he was. Throughout his career, Elvis Presley pushed gender boundaries by making floral prints cool. One example was during the ‘60s when he wore a red hibiscus shirt for the movie Blue Hawaii. Since then, big brands like Dior, Prada, and Saint Laurent have all adopted the Aloha style. Among all these, Elvis Presley’s most memorable binary-busting look is still his colourful, body-skimming jumpsuits. It liberated men to wear clothes that were more outrageous compared to those they had worn since the 19th century. And after many years, people are still enjoying the clothing freedoms that Elvis ushered in. People loved his fashion style, especially on stage. At that time his style was so trending that people wanted to wear all his clothes. Elvis Presley stepped on the stage in his leather outfit and showed his talent, black leather has been the go-to for any on-the-ropes artist or performer who is looking into reinventing themselves with a desperado edge. Some of the artists that have worn interpretations of Elvis Presley’s seductive leather suit include Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga.

Machine learning's crumbling foundations
Tumblr media
Technological debt is insidious, a kind of socio-infrastructural subprime crisis that’s unfolding around us in slow motion. Our digital infrastructure is built atop layers and layers and layers of code that’s insecure due to a combination of bad practices and bad frameworks.
Even people who write secure code import insecure libraries, or plug it into insecure authorization systems or databases. Like asbestos in the walls, this cruft has been fragmenting, drifting into our air a crumb at a time.
We ignored these, treating them as containable, little breaches and now the walls are rupturing and choking clouds of toxic waste are everywhere.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/07/27/gas-on-the-fire/#a-safe-place-for-dangerous-ideas
The infosec apocalypse was decades in the making. The machine learning apocalypse, on the other hand…
ML has serious, institutional problems, the kind of thing you’d expect in a nascent discipline, which you’d hope would be worked out before it went into wide deployment.
ML is rife with all forms of statistical malpractice — AND it’s being used for high-speed, high-stakes automated classification and decision-making, as if it was a proven science whose professional ethos had the sober gravitas you’d expect from, say, civil engineering.
Civil engineers spend a lot of time making sure the buildings and bridges they design don’t kill the people who use them. Machine learning?
Hundreds of ML teams built models to automate covid detection, and every single one was useless or worse.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/02/autoquack/#gigo
The ML models failed due to failure to observe basic statistical rigor. One common failure mode?
Treating data that was known to be of poor quality as if it was reliable because good data was not available.
Obtaining good data and/or cleaning up bad data is tedious, repetitive grunt-work. It’s unglamorous, time-consuming, and low-waged. Cleaning data is the equivalent of sterilizing surgical implements — vital, high-skilled, and invisible unless someone fails to do it.
It’s work performed by anonymous, low-waged adjuncts to the surgeon, who is the star of the show and who gets credit for the success of the operation.
The title of a Google Research team (Nithya Sambasivan et al) paper published in ACM CHI beautifully summarizes how this is playing out in ML: “Everyone wants to do the model work, not the data work: Data Cascades in High-Stakes AI,”
https://storage.googleapis.com/pub-tools-public-publication-data/pdf/0d556e45afc54afeb2eb6b51a9bc1827b9961ff4.pdf
The paper analyzes ML failures from a cross-section of high-stakes projects (health diagnostics, anti-poaching, etc) in East Africa, West Africa and India. They trace the failures of these projects to data-quality, and drill into the factors that caused the data problems.
The failures stem from a variety of causes. First, data-gathering and cleaning are low-waged, invisible, and thankless work. Front-line workers who produce the data — like medical professionals who have to do extra data-entry — are not compensated for extra work.
Often, no one even bothers to explain what the work is for. Some of the data-cleaning workers are atomized pieceworkers, such as those who work for Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, who lack both the context in which the data was gathered and the context for how it will be used.
This data is passed to model-builders, who lack related domain expertise. The hastily labeled X-ray of a broken bone, annotated by an unregarded and overworked radiologist, is passed onto a data-scientist who knows nothing about broken bones and can’t assess the labels.
This is an age-old problem in automation, pre-dating computer science and even computers. The “scientific management” craze that started in the 1880s saw technicians observing skilled workers with stopwatches and clipboards, then restructuring the workers’ jobs by fiat.
Rather than engaging in the anthropological work that Clifford Geertz called “thick description,” the management “scientists” discarded workers’ qualitative experience, then treated their own assessments as quantitative and thus empirical.
http://hypergeertz.jku.at/GeertzTexts/Thick_Description.htm
How long a task takes is empirical, but what you call a “task” is subjective. Computer scientists take quantitative measurements, but decide what to measure on the basis of subjective judgment. This empiricism-washing sleight of hand is endemic to ML’s claims of neutrality.
In the early 2000s, there was a movement to produce tools and training that would let domain experts produce their own tools — rather than delivering “requirements” to a programmer, a bookstore clerk or nurse or librarian could just make their own tools using Visual Basic.
This was the radical humanist version of “learn to code” — a call to seize the means of computation and program, rather than being programmed. Over time, it was watered down, and today it lives on as a weak call for domain experts to be included in production.
The disdain for the qualitative expertise of domain experts who produce data is a well-understood guilty secret within ML circles, embodied in Frederick Jelinek’s ironic talk, “Every time I fire a linguist, the performance of the speech recognizer goes up.”
But a thick understanding of context is vital to improving data-quality. Take the American “voting wars,” where GOP-affiliated vendors are brought in to purge voting rolls of duplicate entries — people who are registered to vote in more than one place.
These tools have a 99% false-positive rate.
Ninety. Nine. Percent.
To understand how they go so terribly wrong, you need a thick understanding of the context in which the data they analyze is produced.
https://5harad.com/papers/1p1v.pdf
The core assumption of these tools is that two people with the same name and date of birth are probably the same person.
But guess what month people named “June” are likely to be born in? Guess what birthday is shared by many people named “Noel” or “Carol”?
Many states represent unknown birthdays as “January 1,” or “January 1, 1901.” If you find someone on a voter roll whose birthday is represented as 1/1, you have no idea what their birthday is, and they almost certainly don’t share a birthday with other 1/1s.
But false positives aren’t evenly distributed. Ethnic groups whose surnames were assigned in recent history for tax-collection purposes (Ashkenazi Jews, Han Chinese, Koreans, etc) have a relatively small pool of surnames and a slightly larger pool of first names.
This is likewise true of the descendants of colonized and enslaved people, whose surnames were assigned to them for administrative purposes and see a high degree of overlap. When you see two voter rolls with a Juan Gomez born on Jan 1, you need to apply thick analysis.
Unless, of course, you don’t care about purging the people who are most likely to face structural impediments to voter registration (such as no local DMV office) and who are also likely to be racialized (for example, migrants whose names were changed at Ellis Island).
ML practitioners don’t merely use poor quality data when good quality data isn’t available — they also use the poor quality data to assess the resulting models. When you train an ML model, you hold back some of the training data for assessment purposes.
So maybe you start with 10,000 eye scans labeled for the presence of eye disease. You train your model with 9,000 scans and then ask the model to assess the remaining 1,000 scans to see whether it can make accurate classifications.
But if the data is no good, the assessment is also no good. As the paper’s authors put it, it’s important to “catch[] data errors using mechanisms specific to data validation, instead of using model performance as a proxy for data quality.”
ML practitioners studied for the paper — practitioners engaged in “high-stakes” model building reported that they had to gather their own data for their models through field partners, “a task which many admitted to being unprepared for.”
High-stakes ML work has inherited a host of sloppy practices from ad-tech, where ML saw its first boom. Ad-tech aims for “70–75% accuracy.”
That may be fine if you’re deciding whether to show someone an ad, but it’s a very different matter if you’re deciding whether someone needs treatment for an eye-disease that, untreated, will result in irreversible total blindness.
Even when models are useful at classifying input produced under present-day lab conditions, those conditions are subject to several kinds of “drift.”
For example, “hardware drift,” where models trained on images from pristine new cameras are asked to assess images produced by cameras from field clinics, where lenses are impossible to keep clean (see also “environmental drift” and “human drift”).
Bad data makes bad models. Bad models instruct people to make ineffective or harmful interventions. Those bad interventions produce more bad data, which is fed into more bad models — it’s a “data-cascade.”
GIGO — Garbage In, Garbage Out — was already a bedrock of statistical practice before the term was coined in 1957. Statistical analysis and inference cannot proceed from bad data.
Producing good data and validating data-sets are the kind of unsexy, undercompensated maintenance work that all infrastructure requires — and, as with other kinds of infrastructure, it is undervalued by journals, academic departments, funders, corporations and governments.
But all technological debts accrue punitive interest. The decision to operate on bad data because good data is in short supply isn’t like looking for your car-keys under the lamp-post — it’s like driving with untrustworthy brakes and a dirty windscreen.

Since I’m still in a sci-fi mood (along with, like, monsters and romance stuff too, but that’s always there), and I haven’t been able to really... make any new written content recently, I decided to rework an old one-shot I wrote for the space pirate au with how my Henry, Hugo, met Bendy in it.
I honestly don’t remember if I ever posted it here, I know I posted it on discord for my friends to read, but I’m posting up a better version here. Plus, rewriting an old drabble might help me get back into the swing of things when it comes to writing! Especially since I’ve got a zine entry to work on.
As always, Hugo is a half human/half alien (Asterian), and he’s fourteen in this. Bendy is a being from another universe or dimension, it’s unclear where Bendy’s from, but he’s a demon.
Asterians are a race of aliens that have the ability to travel through the vacuum of space with no need to breathe and have bioluminescent skin, but because Hugo is part human, he can’t last as long in space as he should.
On with the fic!
--
Hugo had lost count of how long he had been left on this stupid hunk of space rock, but he knew that he would probably be dead in due time.
He considered that he’s probably got about an hour or two left, and knowing the Butcher Gang, they’ll either show up last minute to watch him suffer before putting him back on the ship, or they’ll just let him perish. They’re real jackasses like that.
At least he took his sketchbook with him after they threw him off the ship for their own enjoyment, but still, not much to draw when all around him was just inky darkness and a weak light source from a distant star.
He sighed, soundless, his skin gently flashing a neon green, starting from his face down to his fingertips.
“Dat’s a real fancy trick ya can do, kid.”
Hugo’s eyes widened and he turned, shocked to have heard a voice, when he normally couldn’t hear anything in the vacuum of space. He was surprised to see something moving in the darkness of space around him. Something shifted, specks of lights moving around in front of him, before something formed. It looked like a wide, cartoon-ish smile, and from there a whiteness started to spread, forming an odd shape. Then two black, nearly full ovals, with little cuts in them, appeared in the white. It was a face!
“Hiya!” The face greeted in a childish voice, though clearly accented. The shape got closer and as it stepped onto the rock with Hugo, the half-human saw a shape form.
The darkness of space took on legs, oddly shaped, along with a long tail, them a small body that was sorta shaped like a bean. Arms with clawed hands followed, and the face seemed to have more of a head shape to it, though clearly shaped like a strange crescent form. The blackness of the body was covered in what looked like stars, twinkling and flashing, a variety of colors.
“What?” The strange creature asked. “Ya not gonna greet me?”
Hugo frowned, gesturing to his throat and then opened his mouth before shaking his head, his skin flashing involuntarily.
“Ah, right,” The creature nodded, frowning, “ya guys in dis universe can’t talk in da vacuum of space. Hold on.”
He snapped his fingers, the snap actually made a sound, and a bubble surrounded the whole rock. Hugo let out a surprised laugh, before slapping a hand over his mouth, blinking. “W-what?”
“Just a li’l trick, super easy to do!” A grin formed on the other’s face. “It’s made outta natural gases dat drift around us, can’t just make it all, ya know, willy-nilly, but it’s super simple! So, what’s yours dat mine’s Bendy!”
Hugo had to take a moment to register what this guy, Bendy, has said. “It’s, uh, it’s Hugo.” He replied, coughing, trying to sound deeper than he naturally was.
“Hugo, huh?” Bendy grinned brightly. “Nice to meet’cha! So, whatcha doin’ out here in an asteroid belt? Not really a social spot fer ya... what are you?”
“I dunno.” Hugo shrugged. “Human and somethin’ else, I reckon. What exactly are you?”
“Demon!”
“Demon? You mean, like, those human monsters?”
Bendy snorted loudly at this. “Pah-lease! Nonononononono- weeeellll... yes? No? Maybe so! Hard to tell, I mean, demons an’ angels aren’t technically natural to dis dimension, but we exist! We’ve been to Earth! I’ve been there, a number of times, really nice, an’ kinda bad, but it’s got lots of fun stuff there! Ya ever been?”
Hugo shook his head. “No, never really been in that area of the galaxy. Been, uh, stuck in situations were I don’t get to pick where I go.”
The grin slipped on Bendy’s face, as if he was reading the situation and figured out what Hugo was referring to. “Ah, I getcha. Still, maybe you’ll get to see it! It’s pretty neat!” The grin returned and cosmic eyes glanced to the sketchbook resting next to Hugo. “Oh! Ya draw?”
There was a nod, and Bendy asked to see. Hugo let him and Bendy started to look at the sketches and drawings Hugo’s done over the past few months. He seemed rather excited and giddy about them, chatting and pointing out what he loved, or pointed out what was good but could use some improvement.
It was... kinda nice, Hugo thought as he sat there, listening to Bendy ramble on and on. He hadn’t really had anyone to talk to in ages, not since his escape from his previous life and being cabin boy on the Butcher Gang’s ship didn’t give him much respect from anyone onboard, so having a strange being this excited to talk to him was like a breath of fresh air.
“So, why are ya sittin’ on this floatin’ rock, Hugo?” Bendy asked after a while, when their conversation had turned into small talk and such.
“I got left behind for no good reason by the Butcher Gang, they’re the pirates I ‘work’ for.” Hugo stuck out his tongue, making a face. “They’re a bunch of lowlife bastards, is what they are! I bet I could be a better pirate than them any day!”
“You wanna be a pirate?”
“Yeah!” Hugo got to his feet, grinning. “I wanted to be a ranger when I was a kid, but I think a pirate would be cooler! Better! I can make a name for myself, I can rule the skies in my own ship! One day, I’ll have my name known across the galaxy! People will fear the name Hugo, no more lookin’ down on me and thinkin’ I’m just some freak or useless mutt!”
Bendy stared at him for a moment, quietly, and Hugo suddenly felt self conscious, before Bendy’s grin grew even bigger than it had before, nearly face splitting. His eyes sparkled with stars, brightly, it was so strange. “That... SOUNDS AMAZIN’! Can I join!? Can I be part of yer crew, Hugo!?”
Hugo was a bit caught off-guard by this. “You... you wanna be part of my crew? Why?”
“Cause dat sounds like so much fun! Look, I’m a drifter, I explore wherever I drift to, but dat gets so borin’ after so long! An’ bein’ a space pirate sounds like a blast! I’ll help you escape, an’ you an’ I can go on a bajillion adventures together!”
Bendy shoved his hand out at Hugo, smiling. “I’ll make yer dreams come true, Hugo. If ya want mah help.”
“...” Hugo looked at the offered hand. “What do you get outta this? No offense, but from what I know about demons, they like to make deals.”
“None taken.” Bendy shrugged, casually. “I getcha, not easy to trust a demon, we do have a rep fer deals an’ da like, kinda ruins it fer the honest demons like me. But listen, all I want outta this is a fun life! An’ I think yer just da guy to make dat happen.” He winked and Hugo chuckled.
“Alright, you’ve got a deal, Bendy!” Hugo took the offered hand with manic glee.
--
“Wait, you just... took the deal? Just like that?” Harrison asked, raising an eyebrow. “Did you not consider that it could have been a trick?”
“Honestly?” Hugo shrugged. “I considered that, yeah, but Bendy sounded honest, and somethin’ about him screamed ‘he’ll be the most important friend you’ll ever have’. And I was right.”
Hugo chuckled, rubbing at his right palm, where black mark was in his skin, like a tattoo. It was Bendy’s mark, meant for protection and connection. Harrison had asked about it, had asked how Hugo had even met Bendy, and the pirate decided to tell him.
“Do you regret it?” Harrison asked as he looked at the mark.
“Nope, never have, never will. Bendy and I are friends till the end.”
“I see... wait, how the heck did you two become father and son then?”
“Oh, see, now that’s a really funny story! So, when I was fifteen...”
--
It had been a slip from Bendy, by the way, he has accidentally called Hugo ‘dad’ and then it sorta just stuck around. Hugo has embraced the role of dad with his whole being, especially since he can get away with dad jokes now.
But yeah, here’s how these two met in this au!
Harrison is my friend inkspottie’s Henry, by the way.

Chapter Two
Habitat for Humanity Worksite – 9:26am
When I signed up to volunteer Saturday morning of syllabus week, I should have known I would end up regretting it. I almost punted my alarm clock out of the apartment window this morning, but instead settled a slightly more civil action – punching the shit out of the ‘off’ button.
Don’t get me wrong: I love volunteering. It’s been part of my routine since sophomore year when I was recruited for the all-women’s service society on campus – the Alphites. As a society, us Alphites volunteer around campus and in our local community each week. There’s something about doing service together that really creates bonds, and the girls in the society have quickly become some of my closest friends.
We sign up to volunteer for a variety of different service projects each week, and Habitat is my current favorite project to sign up for. As a nonprofit organization, Habitat for Humanity helps families build and improve places to call home. Currently, our regional Habitat is working on building a house from the ground up for a local family in need.
Disclaimer: I am in no way, shape, or form a very ‘handy’ person. Luckily for me, there are always a couple volunteers with construction or engineering backgrounds who are willing to teach other volunteers with less experience – or none, like me.
Since beginning to volunteer at the site last year, I have learned how to use a power saw, how to fasten siding, and how to mix, pour and level cement. It’s definitely empowering to learn new skills and also to see how my handiwork contributes to someone’s future home. I also feel lowkey badass when I get to use the power drill for anything.
Pulling up to the worksite, I clutch my cherished 24oz. Wawa coffee. I finally feel somewhat human as I park my beat-up Jeep Wrangler and hop out to meet the other volunteers for our task assignments.
The site leader Eddie – a burly retiree with a background in construction management – greets me with a huge grin, “(y/n)-doll, we missed you this summer! I can’t believe you abandoned us during the hottest months of the year.”
I roll my eyes, smiling at his teasing. Eddie’s like a teddy bear disguised as a grizzly – all rough edges and a heart of gold. “Missed you, too, Eddie.”
“Look at our progress now,” he continues, “Pretty impressive, yeah?” Nodding, I greet some regular volunteers I recognize as Eddie leads me around the house. He proceeds to show me what they had done over the summer in my absence – and they had done a lot. The house now had its full foundation and wooden framing with most of the doors and windows installed.
As we walk back to the front of the house to the main area, I sip my coffee and turn to Eddie, “So, what can I work on today, fearless leader?”
Letting out a patented ‘Eddie belly-laugh’, he replies, “I know you worked on the siding at our last site so I'm gonna have you work on where we started the siding on the right side of the house.”
Sweet, I could work with that. “Aye, aye, captain,” I respond with a lazy salute of my coffee cup. Before I can turn to start towards the scaffolding to begin, Eddie stops me.
“Oh, one more thing. I’m gonna need you to orient our new volunteer and let him shadow you today. Kid’s from the same school as you, I think… Mandatory service. Anyway, he should be here any minute.”
Shit, I know what ‘mandatory service’ means. It’s the first form of disciplinary action that the college issues and is usually the only form of disciplinary action for our athletes or for Greek life – a fact I actively resent. During my time in the Alphites, I have had to deal with some of these ‘mandatory service’ characters and they’ve never been much fun to be around.
“Ah, that’s probably him now,” Eddie startles me out of my thoughts of dread and doom as a black gleaming Tesla practically purrs down the block, swinging into the spot next to my Wrangler. Scowling, I cross my arms as I survey the stark contrast between this person’s shiny-ass luxury car and my dirty-ass well-loved Jeep.
The Tesla door opens. A Timberland booted foot emerges followed by a thick leg encased in light jeans, a tanned well-muscled arm…
No. Nope, it couldn’t be— Please, not today, Satan.
He stands with his back to us now, stretching out his large body. In only a cutoff t-shirt, his rippling back muscles might be enough to send me into an early grave.
I sigh in bitter defeat of the inevitable. Seriously, the fucking universe must have it out for me because I can’t seem to shake this stupid fucking fraternity.
As if the boy feels my eyes on him, he turns. His eyes immediately clash with mine as he slams his car door, clicking the lock over his shoulder. Those eyes – golden brown beneath dark brows and a wave of bleached blonde hair. Their focus is absolute – hard – as he strolls towards us. It’s almost as if he knows the maddening effect that he has on me.
I think Eddie is speaking, but my senses are on lockdown, his words muted. My thighs tighten as my pulse picks up. Get a fucking grip, (y/n). I can’t let him know that just one look from him has me thirsty and oxygen-deprived. I can’t look away – that would be succumbing to weakness.
Instead, I hold his heated gaze as best I can as his confident gait brings him closer. God, he’s got to be at least 6 foot...
The goddamn president of BTS Kim Namjoon is getting closer and I can’t help running my eyes over him.
His thighs flex and shift beneath his jeans with every calculated step. His abs are apparent under his tight cutoff shirt emblazoned with his fraternity letters.
Namjoon stops in front of us, hands stuffed into his back pockets, biceps flexing. “Nice to finally meet you, Eddie,” Namjoon takes his eyes off me long enough to greet Eddie and shake his hand, but then they’re right back on me, “Hi, (y/n).”
He drags out my name in a such a sinful way that even old Eddie does a slight doubletake. Clearing his throat unnecessarily loudly, Eddie booms, “You two know each other?”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Our differing replies sound at the same time.
“Yes,” Namjoon repeats, lips turning up in an infuriating smile, “We have several mutual friends that she’s met a couple times now. Want me to jog your memory? I’d be more than happy to do so.”
Eddie takes one look at my face and hustles off, mumbling something about support beams. I guess my inner thoughts of ‘kill, maim, slaughter’ could easily be read from my facial expression.
Namjoon opens his mouth to speak again, but I’m faster, “Listen, Kim, I don’t know who you think you are, and, quite frankly, I don’t care. What I do care about is this house and these people working on it. Don’t fuck this up for me, okay? Let’s just get through today and then you can go back to ordering around your brothers and causing general mayhem.”
I’m feeling pretty proud of my little soliloquy until I realize he’s still smiling with those blasted dimples out in full display. No, his smile has grown even wider now as he simply answers, “The semester.”
My nose crinkles in confusion, “What?”
“The semester,” he repeats, “I’m assigned here every Saturday for the rest of the semester.”
I stare at him.
He smirks back.
I stare.
His smirk begins to fade, “Uh, did you hear me?”
I stare.
“Okay, you’re creeping me out now, (y/n),” Namjoon waves his giant paw of a hand in front of my face, “How many fingers?”
I break out of my trance of denial and hiss, “What did you do? Double homicide? Serial arson? Oh my god, you were the one who blew up the science lab!”
His hand covers my mouth – it’s rough and warm and entirely disarming.
“You have quite the imagination, jagi. I’ll keep that in mind,” Namjoon chuckles, “To answer your question, I did none of the above. Now, answer a couple questions of mine: what did you do to get here and – more importantly – why did you distract Jungkook from doing his fucking job on Monday?”
I glare in response, waiting for him to remove his hand from my mouth. He takes too long, and I lick his palm. It works. He removes his hand, but from the look on his face it seems like he liked my tongue on his skin entirely too much.
Thankfully, Eddie chooses the perfect moment to yell across the site, “What are you doing just standing there, (y/n)-doll? I don’t pay you to just loiter around all day!”
“You don’t pay me at all!” I yell back, already moving towards the trailer with all the supplies to get started. Namjoon follows.
“(y/n)-doll?” his eyebrows are raised as I hand him a pair of the biggest gloves I could find, “What’s up with that?”
Taking a pair of smaller gloves for myself, I turn to look for some hammers and nails as I respond, “I’ve been here a while. He’s like my honorary grandfather at this point.”
I spot the hammers and nails tucked away on the highest corner shelf and I huff. Namjoon follows my gaze, “Need a strong, intelligent, tall young man to grab those for you?”
He’s impossible, but for some reason it draws a small smile to my face, “Yes, that’d be great.”
The smile I receive in response is so bright I wonder if it could make flowers grow, “Okay, but only if answer my questions, (y/n).”
I shrug, trying not to notice how his cutoff shirt rises as he stretches to reach the upper shelf. I catch a sudden glimpse of his abs, and I praise every god out there that hot weather can be blamed for my sudden onset of sweat.
Clearing my throat, I laugh lightly, “Fine, first of all, I didn’t ‘distract’ Jeon. I just had a temporary lapse in judgement. Besides, he came to me all on his own.” His back muscles tense up at my words, but I continue, “And second of all, there’s no juicy story of how I got here. I just volunteer here every Saturday for the Alphites.”
The sound of a hammer hitting the floor startles me as he whirls around, “You’re an Alphite?”
Namjoon’s tone is one of disbelief and it’s a tone I do not appreciate, “Yes, why is that so hard to believe?” My arms cross defensively, “I’ve been a sister since my sophomore year...”
I trail off. He’s still gawking at me ridiculously. Narrowing my eyes, I stride across the trailer and grab his chin, closing his mouth for him, “Watch out, Kim, you’re gonna catch flies.”
Spinning on my heels, I sashay out of the trailer, nose held high in the air and satisfaction held even higher. He’ll catch up. After all, he’s basically supposed to be my bitch today.
I climb up the scaffolding next to the house’s right side and assess the siding work that has already been started. It looks pretty solid and level. I should have no issue with continuing without having to make any initial corrections.
The sound of a bucket of nails hitting the top platform I’m sitting on alerts me of Namjoon’s impending presence. Saving the bucket from teetering over the edge – a safety hazard for sure – I watch amusedly as Namjoon struggles stay upright and climb up to where I am on the scaffolding. Finally, he plops down next to me – entirely too close. I can feel his stare on my skin as I steadfastly ignore him.
“Hey, jagi,” he pokes my arm, “(y/n), listen, you just caught me off guard. I mean, you don’t seem like the type to be an Alphite – that’s all.”
Fury curls up inside me for the umpteenth time that morning, as I turn to face Namjoon with a sickly-sweet smile that has him flinching back, “Then do tell, Namjoon, what type I seem to be?”
I pick up the hammer closest to me and dip a hand into the nail bucket. The sooner this siding got done, the sooner I could haul ass out of here.
“I feel like that’s a trick question,” Namjoon sighs, rubbing a hand over his chin, “I didn’t mean anything bad by it, okay? I guess I just have always thought that your society was a bunch of mom-types—”
I cut him off with a swing of my hammer in the air, “What’s wrong with mom-types, you uncultured swine? And is serving your community really such a ‘mom’ thing to do? I’m sorry. I must have missed that memo. Here I was thinking that it was public service but go off I guess.”
He blinks, “Did you just call me an ‘uncultured swine’?”
I sniff in indignation, “Get with the times, Kim. I just roasted your ass. Now hand me that piece of siding and make yourself useful.”
“You’re so weird,” Namjoon mutters, sliding my request over to me.
“So what?” I shrug, “All the best people are weird. Now, do me a solid and explain to me why you and your ‘brothers’ keep suspiciously popping up everywhere I go.”
“Haven’t you figured it out yet?” he grins, “We’re interested.”
“What does that even mean? That you’re interested?” I wrack my brain, “As in all seven of you fuckers?”
“It means, jagi,” Namjoon pauses, leaning closer, “It means that we’re going to date the shit out of you.”

Daemonism Survey
I wanted to see if I could summarize my experience. I know I have long winded thoughts on many of these subjects. Figured others may enjoy reading my answers. Survey found at the bottom.
What is a dæmon to you? The subconscious speaking through inner monologues.
What makes a dæmon, a dæmon? A daemon provides a positive change in their person while also intrinsically being a part of who they are and their identity. You cannot have one without the other. I feel this being needs to be tied to the subconscious (or soul) and will use our inner monologue to communicate.
I am of the belief many different beings can play the role of a daemon. Tulpa, alters, other headmates, and spirits can match these qualifications. "Daemon" has always felt more like a job title or other very personal labels like pronouns or familial titles like "daughter" or "father". I think daemons can stem from too many things and how they connect within the mind to say for sure what is and is not a daemon.
What does dæmonism mean to you? Daemonism is cultivating our inner-self to be a companion who supports us, and in doing so we are learning how to support ourselves.
What is the purpose of dæmonism? To provide a healthy mindset. Can be focused on mental health or cognitive thinking. A healthy mindset for one may be self-improvement; for another it may be companionship and self-compassion; or perhaps they just need someone to help recall information. What daemonism is varies from person to person but to me the base line is you get into daemonism seeking something you feel is going to improve something about your life.
What is/are your dæmon(s) like? What is your dæmon's personality like? What are their likes and dislikes? This is the space for anything you want to share about how your dæmon behaves, thinks and feels! Thats a lot to put. So I will place what may make them different from other daemons. They are very self-focused on me. No matter their personality its always focused around what is best for me. What needs to be done for me. Their world revolves around me and they do not question nor hate it.
How did you meet your dæmon(s)? Inspired by His Dark Materials. Finished the 3rd book, tried to see my daemon, he laughed and the rest is history. I thought we were the only human/daemon pair at the time.
What is/are your dæmon(s)? Dæmons can be many things; a gateway to the subconscious, a personification of your conscience, the other half of your internal dialogue, a spiritual entity, or many other things besides. What is the nature of your dæmon? They are me. They are how I connect to my inner self/subconscious. At the moment they are a gateway rather than the full personification of my subconscious. Please see the answer for "how they are connected to me" for more examples.
What is/are your dæmon's gender(s), and how do they relate to and differ from your own? Mostly female. I use to think my daemons gender was my opposite, then I though I was the outcome of their genders, then I thought their gender supported my own. Now I think it just is another outcome of what my brain needed to be happy and healthy, and while my daemons genders never change future daemons may be influenced by the same factors.
How autonomous is/are your dæmon(s)? How independent and free-thinking is your dæmon; how much do they rely on you in order to exist and function? Autonomy is an illusion. Myself and my daemons will always be influenced by my subconscious and factors surrounding us. Their identities rely on my focus but who they are at the core and how they function is thoughtless. I can personify my heart and it can grow independent but as soon as I stop talking to my heart it doesn't stop beating. It just returns to what it was prior and continues its constant task of keeping the body going without needing any thought on the matter.
How is/are your dæmon(s) connected to you? Subconscious, inner monologues, and even intrusive thoughts. Anima/animus. ID/Ego/Super Ego/ Shadow, split-brain ... Basically if there is a term for connecting with any inner part of yourself or piece of our mind my daemons encompass or build upon that.
How do your dæmon(s) differ from you? They are very goal oriented and driven involving my life and health.
What are the similarities between you and your dæmon(s)? They reflect key parts of myself (good, bad, and desired). We all like and dislike similar things, look for similar things in life and friendship, share taste in fashion, food, and entertainment. Only time things vary are when my daemons reflect an extreme. Like Tess who loves physical activity. I'm not a fan of exercise or sports but I wish I was and so does my body and mind. So her favorite activities are not mine by choice but I know on a subconscious level I need to enjoy these more. There is always a connection so there will always be similarities.
How have your dæmon(s) changed since you first met them? They have changed as much as myself, as they grow the very same as I do effected by my surroundings and experiences. Cayde started just as childlike as myself and grew into an adult. My more recent daemons started based around emotions or specific traits and then grew to be far more complex. This is the nature of living, remaining static is nearly impossible.
Can your dæmon(s) front? Fronting: taking primary control of the physical body. I believe with practice they can but since they have very strong opinions about fronting will refrain from doing so. We have co-fronted to allow my daemon to speak louder and to use "mind-over-matter" to stop pain. But during co-fronting there is no physical control. It is only causing a shift in where my daemon lies on my consciousness.
What are your dæmon form(s)? They have many. Both animal and human.
What do your dæmon form(s) mean to you? Some represent who I am on a subconscious level, a deeply analyzed level, and a more surface level.
How did you find your dæmon form(s)? Some through created systems, others through daemon's choice, and one picked completely out of my or my daemon's control.
What do your dæmon form(s) say about your personality, if anything? One describes my behavior and how I interact with others. The other portrays how I am seen and my narrative in life.
How does your dæmon feel about their form(s)? They love all of them and the more meaning behind a form the prouder they are taking it.
What does it mean for a dæmon's form to be settled? Represents who I (or they) are for a set moment in time. Finding and being content with who we are and our identity.
What kind of forms has your dæmon taken in the past? A variety, mostly animals.
How did your dæmon(s) get their name(s)? Chosen together or they picked one they liked.
What do your dæmon(s) names mean to you? Not much. One of my daemons shares my name which is pretty cool but there is little meaning behind everyone's name.
Has your dæmon's name ever changed? If so, feel free to elaborate! Yes! My first daemon has gone through 3 name changed. First one didn't fit right, second lasted years but he got tired of seeing other people with it, so now he's on his third.
How did you first learn about dæmonism? I learned about daemons through His Dark Materials and daemonism through The Daemon Page.
What motivated you to try dæmonism? Loved the companionship daemons gave in the books
Has your experience of dæmonism changed since you first discovered it? If so, how? I take it far more seriously now as a tool for mental health and self-awareness. I just wanted a unique friend that was a talking animal in the beginning.
How do your dæmon(s) affect and influence your everyday life? Hm, its so hard to say after living over half my life with one. But I'd say they influence my day just by helping me process everything?
How has dæmonism helped you? My daemons have taught me self-love, self-worth, pride, and acceptance.
What does the dæmian community mean to you? They are my home. Sometimes you leave home, and sometimes family upsets you, but you still feel drawn back no matter where you wander. The community is a family I have chosen and I will always feel a part of.
The survey this came from can be found here “ Daemon Survey “. If you are interested in sharing your thoughts please consider completing it, I know the creator would greatly appreciate it.

Note
So, I'm an INTJ who often (especially in the past) have tried to be open and supportive to friends and an ex of mine when it comes to certain problems. I noticed that I often jump to trying to solve their problem for them or offering suggestions and end up neglecting their emotional needs in the end—there's maybe a 50% chance that I was helpful at all. The other alternative is accidentally being taken advantage of and used as a crutch, which I'm luckily done with. Is there any better way to help out when I can hardly understand how a friend feels outside of just being frustrated or anxious?
Practical information and advice about handling emotional needs is already covered in the Emotional Well-Being section, please read. I will use your question as an opportunity to elaborate on the concept of helping, since people often ask about it.
Being able to help effectively is not just one particular skill but a set of skills. I use the word “skills” because they can be learned as long as one has the motivation to study, practice, and improve. Most people know that helping skills are invaluable in a variety of professional and personal contexts. I would also argue that helping skills are essential for personal growth because they play an important role in overcoming the self-inflicted limitations of egocentrism in the process of ego development.
1. Empathy Skills
To be an effective helper, the first thing you need is a decent level of emotional intelligence. This involves having good emotional awareness, knowing how to identify and label feelings and emotions correctly, and knowing how to express feelings and emotions constructively. It is very difficult to understand the emotional life of others when you aren’t even able to understand your own or, worse, when your own emotional life is stunted, repressed, unstable, or dysfunctional. Work on improving your emotional intelligence and, if necessary, learn through healing your own emotional issues and wounds. If you suffer from all sorts of unaddressed or unresolved emotional issues swirling around in your unconscious mind, you are very likely to project them onto people, which will handicap or undermine your attempts to help them.
From having a healthy emotional life, you are able to practice the emotional empathy that is necessary for having a caring and helpful attitude. In human beings, empathy is a very natural emotional response to suffering, due to our evolutionary history of being a cooperative species. Unless you have neurological damage/deficits, you should be capable of feeling bad when you see someone else feeling bad, if only because you know how shitty it is to experience badness. That is the basis of empathy in a nutshell.
I use the phrase “practice empathy” because, when life is busy or too self-involved, it is all too easy to brush others off. Worse, some people are very averse to negativity and actively suppress their empathy so that they never have to feel guilty. Suppression of feeling, taken to extremes, may lead to callousness or aggression. Practicing empathy means that you actually stop and take the time to get in touch with your empathy, to really feel it, whenever you witness suffering. By actively deepening your empathy, you have a natural source of motivation to lend a helping hand.
Emotional empathy is how you nurture your moral character and moral virtues, i.e., to become an ethical, kind, caring, and compassionate person. By contrast, cognitive empathy is about having the ability to construct an accurate theory of mind and using it to assess human problems carefully, so that your solutions take into consideration how each vested party will be impacted. Another term that people use fairly synonymously with cognitive empathy is perspective taking. It involves putting yourself into another person’s shoes in an effort to understand: how they think, what they feel and why, what motivates them, what they need and desire, and the behavioral strategies that they are using to achieve their goals. The assumption is that, when you understand someone’s perspective more fully, you are better positioned to respond appropriately and effectively.
One of the reasons that people are drawn to type theory is because it offers insight into important and legitimate differences between people. Different people have different priorities, needs, and goals based on their cognitive functional stack and their life circumstances. This should always be taken into consideration when you’re trying to help. One of the most common pitfalls in helping people is operating on the assumption that they are similar to you, which leads you to overlook differences and apply the wrong kind of help. When you’re trying to construct a theory of mind, type theory gives you a leg up by opening up your mind to different possibilities and pointing you in useful directions for investigation. For example, if you are N and the other person is S, then you start off by understanding that your way of perceiving situations is very different from theirs, perhaps completely opposite, which should give you pause and force you to learn more about their cognitive process.
Emotional empathy and cognitive perspective taking must go together, otherwise, one or the other may lead you very astray. Emotional empathy, on its own, isn’t enough for being a good helper. In fact, some people have very strong emotional empathy and make situations even worse because they just act immediately on their feelings without any consideration for the consequences. For example, some people reflexively jump to defend perpetrators of violence because they empathize with them more than the victims. Cognitive perspective taking, on its own, isn’t enough for being a good helper. In fact, many people use their perspective taking ability to cheat, swindle, or manipulate for selfish gain. For example, con artists and snake oil salesmen often prey on people’s fears and insecurities to turn a profit. Thus, treat emotional empathy and cognitive perspective taking as equally important but separate abilities.
2. Relationship Building Skills
While empathy is useful for building moral character and perspective taking is useful for constructing an accurate theory of mind, the key to helping is learning how to apply these concepts within the context of relationships. You may feel deep empathy but fail to help. For example, you just freeze up like a deer in headlights once you see someone crying and sobbing in front of you. You may have an accurate theory of mind but still approach the situation the wrong way. For example, you correctly pinpointed your toddler’s fear of large crowds, but your paternalistic approach is to throw them into the middle of a huge crowd and force them to deal alone.
To avoid these kinds of problems, you should always approach helping as a collaboration. Collaboration means that two people put their minds together for a shared purpose. To collaborate well with someone requires two things:
i) Trust: Trusting someone means that you believe they have your best interests at heart. To trust is to have an open heart, which means that you give people the benefit of the doubt. Trust is very important when you’re trying to give advice. If someone trusts you and gives you the benefit of the doubt, they are better able to understand your intention even if you say the wrong thing or offer unhelpful advice. Trust helps to quickly smooth over misunderstandings or miscommunications by reminding us that people are good and mean well.
ii) Rapport: Positive rapport means that two people are able to communicate comfortably because they care about each other as well as speak freely because they do not have undue fear of judgment or punishment. Good rapport puts everyone at ease, which helps to maintain an open mind. Rapport is very important when you’re trying to give advice. If you have positive rapport with someone, they will be more open to entertaining new ideas and solutions. Positive rapport makes problem solving a more easygoing and even enjoyable process.
Needless to say, if you don’t have someone’s best interests at heart, then you should stay out of their business until you do. Helping someone should ultimately come from a place of care. Different people have different trust thresholds (often due to past trauma), so you may have to work harder to earn some people’s trust than others. To earn trust means to prove to someone that you care about them and can be relied upon. This generally involves being attentive to their needs, offering support when needed, honoring your relationship duties and responsibilities, and keeping your promises.
Needless to say, if someone doesn’t feel comfortable talking to you, then you shouldn’t try to force them. Make an honest judgment about whether you’re the best person to help them or not. If you’re not the one, you can still offer help, but don’t get offended if they don’t take you up on it. Different people have different conditions to be met before they feel comfortable enough to share their private business, so you may have to work harder to develop rapport with some people than others. Positive rapport is basically good communication, so work on your communication skills as needed.
Learn the sorts of words and behaviors that help put people at ease. Learn to listen intently, patiently, and empathetically. Learn to pause and ask the right questions when you don’t understand. Learn to offer feedback in a kind and constructive way. Learn to be less judgmental, impatient, or critical, i.e., the kinds of traits that cause conflict, distance, and fear in relationships. Learn to avoid prejudice and mindreading, i.e., the kinds of behaviors that cause harmful and gross misunderstandings between people.
3. The Helping Process
Once you’ve used your empathy and perspective taking skills to establish a good foundation of trust and positive rapport with someone, then you are well-positioned to help them. Always remember that human affairs are an art - not a science. Humans are complex and each one of us unique. There’s no “methodology” that you can follow perfectly to handle every relationship perfectly. A big part of being successful at relationships is simply to be adaptable. Observe and listen more carefully so that you know when it’s time to change your approach.
That said, there are some general guidelines that will help steer you in the right direction whenever you feel lost. Professional counselors are specifically trained to help people with their problems, so there’s a lot we can learn from their training process. I will summarize and adapt a commonly used three stage model of helping that anyone can apply to their relationships:
Stage 1: Gather the Facts
The person experiencing the problem is the one who knows it best. Therefore, the first step isn’t to panic about “what should I do”, rather, always start by getting them to elaborate, in as much detail as possible, so that you understand the situation fully from their point of view. Ask several open-ended questions to give them the opportunity to freely describe the situation, what happened, what may be causing the problem, how they feel about it, what they have or haven’t done about it, etc. After hearing them out, summarize the situation in your own words and ask them to confirm whether you’ve understood everything. The key skills needed in this stage are curiosity, listening, and verifying.
Stage 2: Encourage Awareness and Insight
Oftentimes, people aren’t able to tackle a problem on their own because they don’t know exactly what the problem is - look into their mind and you will see a giant mess. Giving them a chance to express their thoughts and feelings out loud is sometimes enough for them to understand the problem and come up with their own solutions. You should always encourage people to think for themselves whenever they show the tendency, because ideas always stick better when they come from oneself. This also addresses the problem of people becoming too dependent on you. Ideally, the goal of any good helper is to eventually make themselves obsolete, by teaching people to stand on their own.
If after elaboration, you’re still not clear about what they need, then be more direct in getting that information, usually through making more direct inquiries. What you do at this point really depends on the situation and the kind of problem you’re dealing with. It may be enough to ask them whether there’s anything you can do to help and, if so, what would be the best way to help. They might say that they’re not looking for a “fix” but simply want someone to listen, then step back and listen with empathy. You may ask them point blank what exactly it is they need or want. You may ask them what they hope or wish for. You may ask them about what objectives or goals they’re aiming for. You may ask them about the obstacles and challenges they’re experiencing. You may ask them whether they would like your help in analyzing the problem.
Don’t make assumptions about what they need when they haven’t even expressed their needs, which means that you should NOT be stepping forward with a “solution” until you’re absolutely sure that it’s what they want. The key skills needed in this stage are providing emotional safety, encouraging people to reflect more deeply, and inquiring into psychological motivations.
Stage 3: Implement Action
This step is only relevant if they are committed to solving the problem and want your help with it. Collaborate with them to analyze the problem by determining its cause(s), entertain various ideas and solutions, and make a list of all the choices available to them. Help them evaluate their list of choices by illuminating the possible effects/outcomes, pros/cons, or cost/benefits. This will allow them to make a more informed and intelligent choice.
Remember that they are ultimately responsible for choosing what to do - not you. Even the best advice will fall flat if the person doesn’t feel like they can carry it out. THEY have to feel comfortable enough with the choice to put it into action. This means that you must always have an eye on their comfort level. When someone expresses any kind of uncertainty about whether they can implement a solution, it is often a subtle request for more/better support. If that’s the case, go back to stages 1 and 2 to dig deeper into what’s holding them back. It may be an internal or external obstacle, and once you’ve identified it, you can help them remove it.
To implement an idea usually requires coming up with a practical plan, strategy, or method of attack, so help them draw a feasible roadmap. Set up concrete measurements or benchmarks to measure progress or success. Sometimes, they may need your help to break a big plan down into smaller steps in order to avoid feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Sometimes, they may need you to educate, guide, or mentor them to learn new knowledge for overcoming a particular challenge or obstacle. Remember that what seems easy to you may be very difficult to them, so don’t make assumptions about their capabilities. Monitor their progress and offer the appropriate support whenever you observe that they are faltering. The key skills needed in this stage are brainstorming, critical analysis, planning and organizing, quantifying progress, encouraging people to improve, knowledge building, and providing emotional support as necessary.
4. Boundaries, Boundaries, Boundaries
It’s very important that you maintain proper boundaries when helping people. You are not a professional counselor and, even if you are, there should always be a sense of equality and reciprocity in personal relationships. A healthy relationship cannot be one-sided, unequal, or exploitative.
Respect Your Boundaries: You must have your boundaries to protect yourself from exploitation. There are many people out there who have no qualms about taking advantage of kindness, so don’t allow such people to worm their way into your life. Only get involved when someone genuinely needs your help and you are quite confident that they will benefit from it. Remember that helping should ultimately set people up to be independent. If you keep people dependent on you, then there’s some ego problem that needs to be addressed on your part.
Respect Their Boundaries: Remember that everyone has their own life to live. Honor and appreciate individual differences. You may enjoy helping people and that’s fine, but there must be an element of selflessness in your help, so that you don’t get too invested in what other people do/don’t do. Once you start to place unreasonable expectations on people, you get yourself all mixed up into their problem, and then you start to show visible frustration, impatience, or disappointment. Then they might start to fear disappointing you and hide from you, they might start resisting your advice, or your help might even backfire spectacularly. In other words, your “help” just complicates and even worsens situations when you can’t properly respect people’s right to make their own choices in life.
To set proper boundaries circles back to the first point of having good emotional intelligence. You have to be aware of your part in the situation, the effects that you’re feeling, the effects that you’re producing, and monitor for negative feelings and emotions that would lead you to do something regrettable or harmful. Having good emotional intelligence is very important for good decision making in relationships and even life in general. I’ve already provided articles and book suggestions for learning in depth.

[CN] Lucien’s R&S - The victim who disappeared (Eng Translation)
🍒This R&S (消失的遇难者) was part of the Dream Heart Lake event which will unlikely come to EN🍒
Angst warning!
More Lucien R&S from this event:
> regarding what books don’t say (important to read this first!)
> my love rival older brother
> the victim who disappeared ♡
> since that rainy night
[ Chapter One ]
Recently, the girls in the precinct have been addicted to a variety program called “Miracle Finder”. When it’s time for lunch, there’d be a bunch of them piling in front of the computer screen, watching and exclaiming.
Filled with curiosity, I lean over to take a look. The girls immediately stop me, recommending it fervently.
“Captain Fan, do you watch this program too?”
“This week’s guest is Professor Lucien. He looks so handsome!”
I shake my head in resignation. “You girls only know how to look at appearances the whole day.”
“Captain Fan, you can’t say that! Our Professor Lucien became a neurologist at a very young age.”
“Exactly, exactly! He’s also a guest professor at Loveland University!”
“Sigh. If I had such a handsome teacher back then, I’d have definitely worked hard.”
Watching the girls chat, I can’t help but tease them. “Don’t all of you have an even more handsome-looking superior? It isn’t too late to start working now.”
The moment I finish speaking, their exclamations completely cover my words. Seems like the young and gifted “Professor Lucien” they’ve been talking about has appeared on the screen. Seeing his refined manner and gentle appearance, I actually feel a sense of familiarity.
“Hurry and look! Even Captain Fan is dazed!”
“We were right, weren’t we? Doesn’t he have an especially good temperament!”
The crinkled and smiling eyes of that boy in my memories overlap with the person on screen. That unresolved case which almost disappeared finally has a favourable turn after so many years. Even though I know that the chances are slim, I still wish to grasp this new lead.
“What’s his name again?”
“Oh? Wasn’t Captain Fan completely uninterested just now?” The girls notice the change in my attitude, becoming enthusiastic in an instant. They start introducing him, their words pouring out in an unceasing torrent. “His name is Lucien, a neurologist who returned after studying abroad. I heard that the thesis he released at twenty was published in an internationally renowned science magazine...”
“Isn’t he just as intelligent as that boy?” I mutter softly, the hope in my heart brightening by a few notches.
Although the name doesn’t fit, if that child managed to survive after that incident 19 years ago, it feels as though he would have gone down such a life path.
“Uncle has worked very hard. Kid, have you been doing your best over the years too?”
Even though I’m unable to find concrete evidence to make public the incident 19 years ago, the least I could do is to shed some light on the truth concerning that kid and his family.
In the midst of a cruel reality mixed with tears and blood, and the truth which cannot be found, the me of the past finally decided to step out of the days of living in a wasteland, plunging deeper into a depthless pool of truth.
-
[ Chapter Two ]
At night, I dreamt of that day yet again.
It was that boy’s 7th birthday.
Early in the morning on that day, he had headed out with his parents. Before he left, he specially gave me an invitation card to his birthday party in the evening.
He rarely revealed the innocent smile a kid should have. Instead, his mouth remained merciless, saying something unadorable. “I’ve already spoken with my dad. Tonight, he can tell you how to play chess. If you don't improve in your chess skills, I won’t know how to play with you anymore.”
I snatched the invitation card in his hand in an impolite manner, deliberately provoking him. “You’ll have to make do with it, little genius. I’m the only one who’s willing to play with you.”
In a huff, he ran over to where his parents were waiting for him not afar off. Taking their hands, they left while talking and laughing.
I rarely saw this busy couple accompanying their child outside over the weekend. They must have taken a day off from work specially for his birthday.
“Kid, have fun!”
“Mm.”
“Also, happy birthday!”
“Thank you, Brother Fan.”
His parents and him turned around to wave goodbye at me, the three of their smiles under the sunlight, sparkling and bright.
On hindsight, I should have given him his present then.
It was a sci-fi novel which was popular amongst kids, and I’d frequently see children gathered in the yard discussing it together. Although I didn’t know if that kid liked reading other books aside from those profound science materials, I felt it wouldn’t hurt for him to engage with things people his age liked.
He was still a child. From the bottom of my heart, I hoped that he could live a little more like a child.
However, this wish that I never said aloud was completely shattered by that car accident.
That evening, which should have filled with presents, cake, and the sound of birthday songs, only welcomed pattering and whistling rain, as well as blood stains on the asphalt road which couldn’t be washed off even with a scrub.
Sirens from the ambulance and police cars intertwined. Mixed with the sharp cries of passers-by, they composed the saddest and shrillest background music.
-
[ Chapter Three ]
“Oh my goodness, that’s so horrifying! Those two people are covered in blood!”
“Let’s leave, it’s too pitiful.”
The crowd in the surroundings remarked in soft voices, showing sympathy towards the victims they weren’t acquainted with.
The incident happened on the road outside our estate. After receiving the task, I rushed over to the scene. When I saw the names of the casualties, I was both shocked and had a flicker of hope in my heart, praying that they were people who happened to share the same names. However, after confirming the identities of the two bodies underneath the white cloth, coldness rushed through my body--
Those were the parents of the little genius.
In just the blink of an eye, the couple who had greeted me with warm smiles had turned ice cold, lying in a pool of blood. I didn’t dare to imagine how such a young kid would be able to face such a cruel reality, and my insuppressible tears, along with the rain, drenched my face.
The captain came over to pat me on the shoulder, consoling me with a lowered voice. “Settle your emotions, and do a proper investigation.”
I nodded my head silently, lifting my hand to wipe my tears away. After that, I started taking down records of what the witness had to say.
The witness was a boss of a news-stand nearby, around 45 years of age. He was in a state of fright, hugging his elbows and shivering.
I asked if he needed a rest before supplementing the record, but he shook his head repeatedly, saying that it’d be better to record it early, since he wouldn’t want to recollect such a horrifying image afterwards.
According to his description, the cause of the accident was a large truck which had lost control. It was yet to be confirmed whether the reason for the loss of control was due to a human error, or the slippery road.
After realising that there was an issue with the truck, the driver had frantically tried to turn. But in the end, it still ended up hitting the family of three who were walking on the zebra crossing.
The three of them were sent flying a great distance. The places where they fell turned into pools of blood not long after.
As for what happened after, the boss of the news-stand expressed that he didn’t pay attention due to fright.
After handing him over to the medical personnel to console his emotions, I continued making notes for the next witness.
The images described by all the witnesses were virtually the same. From the various indications of the scene, this tragedy could have been a normal traffic accident.
When I finished making the records, the scene was more or less cleaned up. After wrapping up my work, I inquired about which hospital the boy was taken to. But I was notified that no injured child was found on the scene.
“How’s that impossible! That sketchbook over there belongs to him! That boy suffered such grave injuries - where else could he have gone!”
Agitatedly, I pointed at the exhibits collected, one of them a sketchbook coated in blood. At a glance, I recognised it as the book that boy would carry with him all day. That’s because the flower garland on the cover was a work he was proud of, and it was exactly the same as the one drawn on his birthday invitation card this morning.
He was definitely at the scene when the accident happened. Also, he definitely couldn’t have left on his own.
“Has the scene been investigated? Are there any other suspicious areas or areas we’ve overlooked?”
"Didn’t all the witnesses say there was a family of three at the scene? There’s definitely one more kid!”
“How much time passed after the incident before the scene was cordoned off? Could the kid have been taken away before that?”
I tossed out points of contention in succession, but the expressions of my colleagues remained confused and blank. In a moment of anxiousness, I burned with impatience and went to check the surveillance tape on my own. However, I didn’t notice any suspicious people entering or exiting the scene before or after the incident.
I didn’t have a single clue regarding his whereabouts, and could only hold onto hope as I contacted his relatives one by one.
They were generally not from the city. Most of them didn’t even know that the family had met with an accident, much less the whereabouts of the boy. After consoling their emotions, I hang up dejectedly, turning back to the scene of the incident.
The police cars stationed around earlier had long since left, and traces left on the asphalt road had been washed clean by the rain. Everything returned to peace and quiet, as though nothing had happened. Only the lingering grief served as a reminder that it wasn’t over yet--
The sudden car accident, the missing child, the ignorant relatives - all of these seemed to remind me that this wasn’t a simple traffic incident.
Without any orderliness, I started investigating the vicinity, imagining countless times for that smart fellow to suddenly lunge out from a dark corner, telling me that this whole thing was just a prank he pulled.
However, that didn’t happen. Even after checking every corner of the large streets and small alleys, I ended up empty-handed.
In the end, I sat down tiredly along the side of the road, looking at the pitch-black sky as it started turning into a grey dawn.
Although it was dawn, the truth of the matter would forever be hidden in that dark night.
All my hopes and hopelessness fell into pieces, leaving behind a maze of doubts, akin to a dense fog.
-
[ Chapter Four ]
On the morning of the second day, without even washing my face, I headed to the news-stand to buy various newspapers, looking through them seriously to search for any reports on the matter.
As it was temporarily classified as a normal traffic accident, the length of all the articles were very short. Also, they were placed in nondescript corners.
I closed the final set of newspapers, realising in disappointment that none of them mentioned the missing child.
It’s as though he had evaporated from the world. Aside from me, no one else remembered his existence.
I couldn't stand for the case to be closed just like this, and finally understood the anxiety family members felt when they asked for our help in conducting investigations. As long as it was related to a living person, there wasn’t anything not worth investigating.
With a determination to investigate the matter and leave no stone unturned, I once again returned to the scene of the accident. I asked around the small shops along the roadside, hoping to obtain just a tiny hint.
Heaven will not disappoint the person who tries. From the lips of an owner of the shop facing the zebra crossing, I received an important lead which wasn’t brought up before - a black car.
“When the accident occurred, I was busy, and even had a scare when I heard the truck braking. By the time I set down my stuff to watch, the police cars and ambulance weren’t here yet. But a black car was stationed here for quite some time.”
Regarding this lead, I first expressed shock. Then, I had doubts.
Based on the surveillance tape I watched on the day of the incident, no suspicious cars appeared. If this person deliberately toggled with the surveillance footage to capture the kid, the remaining investigations would likely be a bitter struggle.
“Why did he take the kid away?”
“Could there be a conspiracy behind this?”
That black car had taken both the truth and that boy, disappearing into thin air.
The scene I had witnessed, the images depicted by the witnesses, the true footage of that surveillance tape, pieces of evidence which weren’t able to fit together, created paradoxes. The entire incident was akin to a vicious cycle, tangled and complicated, twisting and turning, unable to grasp a hint of it, and left one spinning around on a superficial level.
In the end, the police classified this matter as a normal traffic incident. And I could only continue investigating in the dark.
-
[ Chapter Five ]
Many years passed. From a small police officer who had accomplished nothing, I struggled and worked hard, becoming a captain who solved countless cases.
Even so, the unresolved case concerning that boy hasn’t had a breakthrough.
Over ten years, I found some leads, but they would ultimately be flawed fragments. And along with the passage of time, they’ve eroded even more.
This time, the person called “Lucien” was probably the finally hope of this case.
-
I visit Loveland University over the weekend, asking the kids about this “Professor Lucien”, but receive scant results even after a long while. He’s indeed very popular amongst students. But regarding his personal life, everyone expressed that they weren’t clear about it.
“Then again, which student would be so free to ask about a teacher’s personal life?” With a wry smile, I take a seat at the resting area of the math building. Without realising it, someone sits beside me. While feeling puzzled over why someone would choose to sit next to a middle-aged uncle when there are so many other empty chairs around, I see the face of the person I was looking for.
“Lucien?!”
“I heard from the students that you were asking about me. So I thought, why not let you ask me in person directly?” His tone is as calm as what I saw in the program, but I can vaguely sense a hint of irritation.
“Please don’t get the wrong idea. I didn’t mean to offend you.” I find an excuse on the fly. “It’s just that after watching your program, there were some issues I didn’t quite understand, and wanted to consult you.”
He listens patiently to the many unorganised questions I have, and explains them thoroughly. That look of concentration makes me think about the boy again.
Finally, I can no longer contain myself. When I’m about to bid farewell to him, I ask, “It might be a little presumptuous of me, but could I ask if you’ve always been living abroad since young?”
There doesn’t seem to be much change in his expression, but he raises his eyebrows slightly.
“In that case, could I be also be presumptuous and ask why you have such a question?
Since things have already reached this stage, I decide that there’s no longer a need to conceal anything. So I tell him the honest truth. “You kind of resemble a kid I used to know, but he’s gone missing.”
Upon hearing this, a sadness dyes his eyes in an instant. He lowers his eyes, his expression sad, as though he had also once known that pitiful child. “I feel deeply sorry for that child... but it’s a shame that I’m not the person you’re looking for. From the moment I could remember, I’ve been living in an orphanage.
“Ah... sorry about that.” I feel uncomfortable knowing that I’ve rubbed someone else’s sore spot. As though he’s talking about matters pertaining to somebody else, he says relaxedly, “It’s all right. I hope you can find that child soon.”
His eyes really do resemble the boy. It’s just that he’s much more modest in how he conducts himself. I increasingly hope that if the boy were still living on this earth, he must definitely be a person who is just as well-liked.
“Many years have passed. To tell you the truth, I think whether or not I find him isn’t that important.” I look into the distance, making a wish from the bottom of my heart. “I just hope that in a corner of the world, he’s living happily and well.”
After Lucien hears this, he chuckles lightly. “I’m almost envious of that boy - that he was able to meet a kind-hearted person who would think of him even after such a long time.”

Godzilla Singular Point
I came into Singular Point with some trepidation because Godzilla’s history in anime is both very recent and extremely bad. The three anime movies released between 2017 and 2019 are easily the worst work of famed writer Gen Urobuchi and honestly contain more bullshit than I can even get into here. Those movies and this series were both Godzilla anime properties commissioned by Netflix, which didn’t get my hopes up very much. Thankfully, Singular Point is a very different beast from the anime trilogy. One could argue it’s very different from most Godzilla media, actually — at least from my perspective. And I’m still a pretty entry-level fan of Toho’s Big G, all things considered.
Tumblr media
Let me just warn you right up front: This smartphone-based virtual assistant is basically the breakout star of the series.
When you think “Godzilla,” you probably don’t think “incredibly dense sci-fi concepts,” but with the big G’s first-ever anime series, the writers clearly set out to change that perception. Before the first kaiju even appears, the lead characters are plucked from obscurity and dropped into a mystery that involves fourth-dimensional time travel, physical objects that look different from all sides, theoretical math concepts, self-propagating A.I., and a whole lot more. And it’s NEVER made clear how all of it connects to the rampaging kaiju! Although we spend a lot of time investigating a red dust or sand that is very obviously tied to the monsters in SOME way, no one ever makes a connection that explains the relationship. Maybe we’re supposed to wait for a later season to connect the threads... but let’s get into the idea of “another season” later.
I like to think of myself as someone who typically enjoys hard sci-fi, but even with the characters spending loads of time trying to explain the high concepts driving the story, I was never able to fully wrap my head around what was going on in the mystery at the center of GSP. I rewound and rewatched a few explanations, but I still walked away feeling lost. I eventually settled on some vague, loose understandings of most of the ideas mentioned, but those understandings were subject to being ripped apart in subsequent scenes when I was shown or told something completely at odds with what I thought I knew. I can’t say I was ever bored with the thick, dense scientific concepts on offer — trying to find purchase with these far-out ideas kept me glued to the screen — but damn, I sure wish I was able to comprehend them.
Tumblr media
What do we want?! DENSE SCIENTIFIC DISCUSSION AND DEBATE! When do we want it?! AFTER THOROUGH RESEARCH, TESTING, AND PEER REVIEW!
Another weird thing about this show is that the lead characters remain in separate locations and on separate tracks for the entire duration. We have Yun — a mechanical engineer and programmer who has an amazing grasp on physics and human behavior. And we have Mei — a grad student who is deeply invested in theoretical science, UMAs, cryptids and other far-flung concepts. Both of them are basically geniuses in their fields, and even though they take opposing views of just how flexible reality is, their shared ability to think “outside the box” becomes the crucial component in solving the mystery at the core of the series. Because they don’t even know one another (despite being separated by like, ONE degree), they only ever interact via text messages and behind screen names, which feels pretty damn weird. At least  I immediately liked both of them, with Yun being the standout to me because of how his lowkey reactions to crazy shit generates a lot of humor.
Tumblr media
This soundtrack cover LIES; you will never see these characters in a room together like this.
Alas, we don’t get to know the characters a whole lot beyond what we learned of them in the first two episodes. It’s not long before they’re trapped in a series of complicated exposition dumps, endlessly attempting to explain the high concepts of the show to other characters as well as my dumb ass in the audience. The fact that I liked them in the first couple of episodes carried me through more than half of the show, but I was always hoping to see them share more of themselves or just display more emotion. Anime as a medium excels at emotional storytelling. But despite the major, world-altering events the characters are constantly warning us about, none of them seem to have many emotions about said events.
Further complicating matters is how, when major events finally occur in this show, they are often kept off-screen. One character shockingly dies, but the portrayal of that death is so piss-poor that I didn’t even realize it’d happened until someone mentioned their death in the next episode. After that vague death, I was particularly sensitive to anything that looked like it might possibly be lethal. Yet a later event that is played up as a tragic, fatal occurrence ends up... fine, somehow? It’s not clear how the character survives, because — even after one of our heroes is left screaming their name in despair as they seemingly die — nobody ever talks about or explains how he’s just fine a couple of scenes later. And near the end of the series, there’s a major transformation that occurs for one of the characters, and we never see it happen nor do we understand HOW it happened. It’s just that suddenly, this character is extremely different due to off-screen reasons that are only vaguely verbalized.
Tumblr media
I guess these two really bonded at some point for some reason? And what you are seeing here is literally the height of emotion shown in the entire show.
Even though the overarching story of the series so far pretty clearly wraps up in episode 13, we then get a post-credits tease for a potential second season. So the question becomes: Would I watch that?
Well... Godzilla Singular Point is a series with a lot of issues that kept me at arms’ length from it — tons of extremely confusing dialogue, highly frustrating choices in direction that lead to baffling storytelling, characters who are mostly exposition-dumping — and yet there’s still some foundational work here that I appreciated a lot. When the action occurs, it’s pretty cool/fun. And when urban destruction occurs, it can be awe-inspiring. The human characters, though little-explored, have likable and interesting foundations to them that could be expanded upon. And I didn’t even mention the soundtrack, which features a variety of musical styles combined with the classic Ifukube theme music and an OP that is an absolute banger. (I have a weakness when it comes to music; a good soundtrack can carry me through even the blandest series sometimes.) Even the core idea of centering a Godzilla series around hard science and mathematical concepts is a compelling one, I think! I just hated the execution of it; they went waaaaay too far on poorly explaining incredibly complex, mind-bending concepts for my pea brain to handle it. They spend so much time trying to explain things, yet somehow they never succeeded for me.
Ultimately, I’d probably give the show another chance. But if I do give another season a chance, it’ll be on probation. I wouldn’t watch the entire season unless I could see within four episodes that they’d definitely improved things.
Would I recommend that anyone watch the series as it currently stands? I mean... not really? I guess if you really dig complex math, hard theoretical science, and/or Toho’s stable of monsters, then maaaaaaaaaaybe give it a shot. But otherwise? Naaaahh. It’s not good enough at anything to make it stand out from the anime crowd. I didn’t hate it like I hated the Godzilla anime films, but Singular Point is still something that both casual viewers and most fans can comfortably ignore for the time being. It’s not a complete disaster, and it’s not without its highlights... but it’s definitely disappointing in my opinion.
OKAYOKAYOKAY, so let’s talk about the kaiju for a bit!
Below will be SPOILERS revealing all of the kaiju that appear in Godzilla Singular Point and giving my feelings on them.
Godzilla — It’s interesting to see a version of Godzilla that borrows some ideas from Shin Godzilla. Shin G has been incredibly unique until now, but this Godzilla manages to fold some of Shin’s distinctive aspects in with the more classic/typical versions to build a fun new depiction. Be forewarned that Godzilla doesn’t show up until the series is halfway over, and he doesn’t get a ton of screen time, either. He’s used quite sparingly and kept in hazy settings, often framed from the neck-up when they show him. It’s a little frustrating that they felt the need to shroud him so much, but I respect the fact that whenever Godzilla is shown, the destruction he causes is on a scale far beyond anything that the rest of the kaiju ever do. He is pure devastation.
Rodan — He’s easily the biological kaiju with the most screen time in Singular Point. Rodan is first introduced as one gigantic pterosaur, but if you’ve seen ANY trailers for this show then you already know that his depiction transitions into an asston of smaller pterosaurs, all of whom are also called “Rodan.” (Apparently the word Rodan is both singular and plural, like the word “buffalo.”) Although he looks kind of cool at first, pretty soon Rodan showing up isn’t special or threatening anymore. Rodan appearances go from “a big goddamn deal” to “some bland background noise” before the series is even 1/3 finished. The design might be a little too far removed from the original for my own taste, but even if I didn’t think that, I wouldn’t be able to care for this Rodan simply because he’s rendered so unimportant and unimpressive.
Tumblr media
If you go out in the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise...
Anguirus — Now check this guy out! Anguirus gets one of the coolest fights in the show and also demonstrates some powers that are well beyond anything we’ve seen him do before. Because he sticks to unpopulated areas, we never see him do much damage to Japan, but he is definitely holding all the attention when he’s on-screen. He’s a highlight for me — a total badass who is very unique in his abilities. And the stated origin for his name is goddamn adorable.
Manda — Yup, Manda is in this series... but I don’t have much to say for him. It seems like the creators of the anime didn’t have much to say about him either. His role amounts to little more than a repeated cameo, and in most of those cameos you only ever see his tail. When we finally see his full body, it’s done so briefly and kept at a distance, leaving me with no real impression. I had to look up his design online and... yup, that sure looks like Manda. Final score: MEEEEHH.
Kumonga — I definitely did not see this appearance coming! Kumonga is much smaller here than you may be used to, but she gets to star in the most suspenseful sequence in the series and easily earns the most exciting cliffhanger moment at the end of an episode. I was utterly glued to the show during her screen time, which comes with a lot of icky twists. Good ones! I honestly like Kumonga here more than I ever have previously.
Tumblr media
NEW PHONE WHO DIS
Salunga — Uh, who? This is the one monster that isn’t based on a classic Toho kaiju but instead is a brand-new creation. I suppose that everybody who touches the Toho Kaiju franchise wants to make their own mark on it in some regard. But a big part of the fun of this series for me personally was the anticipation of seeing new interpretations and designs of classic Toho monsters. And so, given that he kind of resembles both Baragon and Gabara, I never stopped wishing they’d just used one of those guys as the basis and namesake. Taken on his own, however? He’s... pretty neat. Not unique or exciting, but solidly above par.  He resembles a cross between a lizard/dinosaur and an ape, plus his head has some nifty coloration.
Tumblr media
Our Jaguar!
Jet Jaguar — I guess Jet Jaguar isn’t exactly a kaiju in the traditional sense because he’s a Giant Robot. However, if you want to consider him one, then I wager he probably gets even more screen time than Rodan! We meet him almost immediately when the series begins. Initially an odd pilot-driven robot that was constructed at the whim of a quirky old factory-owner with too much disposable income, Jet Jaguar grows and changes over the course of the show, ultimately undergoing a transition in episode 7 that makes him pretty damn impossible to dislike. In fact, I utterly adored him by then. This is definitely the best Jet Jaguar I’ve ever seen. His design is recognizably similar to the original yet utterly distinct, too. Like many of the other kaiju here, he’s not nearly as big as he was when he was first introduced to the movies, but his size is ideal for battling the smaller-scale monsters that we spend most of the series on.

The Only Thing That’s Real
AO3 @tsshipmonth2020
Masterpost- Previous- Next
Thank you to @ace-in-a-shopping-cart for the prompt that got this rolling :D
Summary: Logan and Virgil can feel each other's physical pain. Emotional pain is a little more difficult to decipher.
Content Warning: Self Harm referenced
Day 6 Analogical- Whenever your soulmate is injured, you feel the pain in that area of your body
How many times had Logan given his lecture on having a consistent brushing and flossing schedule? To be exact he had given it 47 times over the past 5 months and yet he could feel the cavity in Virgil’s mouth react to the sickeningly sweet energy drink his boyfriend was pounding down.
"Stop it! Doesn't that hurt?" He glared across the table over the top of his laptop.
"You'll live. It's only like.. two weeks until the appointment?" Virgil rolled his eyes, taking another gulp out of spite. In truth, his mouth hurt a lot and he knew Logan could feel it too. But he was so tired of the sanctimonious lectures. "Anyway, I better get going. See ya, L."
Logan grunted in response. Virgil had such a peculiar way of being a pain in his neck when he was surly like this.
Virgil grabbed his bag and headed out of the apartment, hoping the caffeine and sugar would kick in by the time he got to work. He was on the bus when he felt Logan's daily morning finger prick. Even if he should be used to the pain by now, he wasn't. Of course, his soulmate has diabetes.
Virgil stuck the pricked finger in his mouth and hissed as a strange man roughly pushed passed him on the bus. He quickly checked his pockets and was mildly relieved nothing was missing. He stumbled as the bus started forward again, grabbing for the bar to keep from falling. The bus filled quickly at the next two stops and Virgil felt on the edge of a panic attack by the time he got to work. He stood on the sidewalk and tried to control his breathing to ground himself. Another person pushed past him and he tensed every muscle in his body to stop himself from retaliating.
After the short walk from the stop to work, Virgil found himself tested even further by entitled customers and barking managers. He snapped a rubber band against his wrist every time he felt ready to shut down. He knew Logan would feel it but it was better than getting fired for snapping at a customer.
"Why don't you work at Hot Topic, freak?" a kid no older than ten laughed at him while his tired mother ignored him to mess up the display Virgil had just fixed .
"Because you don't find fresh meat when everyone who shops there is already undead," Virgil smirked at the twerp of a child, showing off a fake fang. It wasn't dress code but he liked it.
The child cried and his mother found a way to blame Virgil for that and about everything else wrong in her world. Virgil tried to ignore the tirade and felt his skin itch.
After a lunch break and another energy drink that did nothing to improve his mood, Virgil begged his favorite manager to be allowed to reorganize the back stock for the rest of his shift. Human interaction was killing him. He groaned when his friend sadly shook his head no and put him on the register.
The rest of the day was a blur as more and more people managed to annoy and aggravate Virgil. He trudged in the front door of the apartment and locked it behind him. Logan was still out at his own job and Virgil had the whole place to himself. The skin on his arms itched terribly as the stress of the day replayed on a loop. He grabbed ice from the freezer and tried to make the urge go away by rubbing the ice on his wrists and forearms. The cold was helpful but he still felt bad.
Virgil wrapped himself in a blanket and blasted his mp3 player, favorite emo playlist on shuffle.
Logan could tell it had been a bad day when he found Virgil all wrapped up in the living room. He'd felt the rubber band snaps all day and was grateful he hadn't felt worse when Virgil got home. Rather than disturb him, Logan went to the kitchen to start preparing their dinner, biting back the voice in his head arguing that Virgil should cook when he got home first.
Logan nearly had finished a plate of bacon and a full stack of pancakes when Virgil snuck up behind him and wrapped his arms around Logan’s waist, resting his forehead between his shoulder blades.
"Rough day?"
"I hate people."
"Mmm. Understandable."
"Why do they exist?"
"Evolution dictates that a species that has a higher population is better at adapting to survive in its surroundings as there is greater genetic variety."
Virgil hissed and straightened back up to grab a drink from the fridge. Logan looked disapproving when Virgil pulled out a can of soda but bit his tongue.
Virgil plated the pancakes and bacon while Logan grabbed butter and Crofters jam from the fridge. They worked together to set the table and sat down to eat.
Virgil side-eyed Logan as Logan spread jam over his pancakes.
"So it's only a problem when I have sugar?"
"It's about self-control, Virge. I don't like it when I know you're in pain over something simple to fix," Logan looked with sympathy that quickly evaporated into fear. "Virgil put it down... Please."
Virgil looked down to find he was absent-mindedly running the butter knife against the sleeve of his hoodie. His eyes went wide and he dropped the knife which skittered across the table.
Logan stood and rushed over to Virgil’s side as the frustrated man hid his face in the hood of his jacket and faceplanted into the table. Logan rubbed Virgil’s back softly, gently pushing up the sleeve to make sure no new wounds had been made and no old ones reopened. The lines on his soulmate’s wrist brought back painful memories of being awoken in the middle of the night, arm stinging for no discernable reason, and fear of the unknown clouding his brain.
"Come on Virgil, it's going to be okay. I'm here," Virgil only grunted in response. "Anime or Disney?"
Virgil barely lifted his head, "neither."
"We're having a movie night. You need to relax. So what are we watching, Stormcloud?" Logan was firm but kind.
"Fine. Starkid."
"Any particular show?" Logan crouched to be eye level with Virgil.
Virgil turned his head to look at Logan, tears running down his cheeks, "I dunno. You pick."
Logan nodded, cupping Virgil’s cheek in his hand and using his thumb to wipe away the tears. He stood, grabbing their plates to move them to the living room. He quickly grabbed a laptop and a few more blankets for the couch, keeping one eye on Virgil the whole time.
When everything was ready, Logan returned to Virgil’s side and offered him both hands. Virgil took them and Logan pulled him up into a hug. They stood there for several minutes before Logan pulled back just far enough to look at Virgil.
"I'm sorry. I've been more like people than your boyfriend lately, haven't I?" Virgil barely nodded in response. "I'm sorry, Virgil. I don't mean to be bossy. I only want you to have a good quality of life because I love you. Seeing you in pain because of others hurts me so much. But I shouldn't be one of the ones causing you pain."
"It's okay, L. You're human. And my soulmate. You literally cannot stop causing me pain," Virgil sighed and looked up, meeting Logan’s gaze. His eyes sparkled with dark brown intensity that made Logan catch his breath. Virgil smirked, "I don't like people, but you're the exception, Logan."
"I love you, Stormcloud."
"I love you too, L."
Logan smirked and picked Virgil up, carrying him bridal style. Virgil quickly wrapped his arms around Logan’s neck to keep from falling. Logan leaned forward and pecked his boyfriend on the lips, heat rising in both of their cheeks. He carried him into the living room and set him down in the nest of blankets before grabbing the laptop and snuggling in himself.
They watched Starship, and Virgil started humming along around halfway through. Logan gently played with Virgil’s hair and after the musical, they stayed curled up together on the couch until they fell asleep.
It would never be easy, but they had each other to protect and care for and that was enough.

How to cope with anxiety?
By:-Ravneet Kaur
 Introduction
So in today’s world every 1 in 13 people globally suffer from an anxiety disorder mental and its very important to know the cause and the consequences of the same. To know how to cope with anxiety ,firstly we have to understand what actually anxiety is?
Anxiety is common mental health problem –just as real and serious as physical disorders such as heart disease or diabetes. It is found that mostly young people suffer from anxiety and depression, which we don’t have to ignore, it is a condition in which a person feels sad, hopeless, unmotivated, discouraged in life.
 Symptoms of anxiety
Symptoms which includes anxiety are
Panic attacks, sweating or feeling hot, elevated heart rate, quick breathing, nausea or sore stomach, feeling weak and fatigued, insomnia, and other physical symptoms are examples of anxiety symptoms.
Mental symptoms include nervousness, irritability, and tension, as well as poor mood and despair, persistent worry, and a need for reassurance from others.
What are the main types of anxiety?
There are many types of anxiety disorders like OCD(obsessive compulsive disorder) , PTSD(posttraumatic stress disorder), separation anxiety etc. But here we talk about only four :-
1)Generalised Anxiety disorder(GAD) :- It is the most frequent type of anxiety condition noticed in people. The majority of the time, people with GAD are nervous and worried. Relationships, sleeping, eating, and working are all affected. They frequently anticipate the worst-case scenario and struggle to manage their negative emotions.
2)Social anxiety:- Social anxiety, often known as social phobia, is a condition in which people have a strong aversion to being in social situations and performing in front of others. Someone with social anxiety may be afraid of being laughed at, humiliated, attacked, or judged by others, even in situations that would not ordinarily cause concern.
3)Panic disorder:- Shaking, heart palpitations, hyperventilation, and dizziness are common signs of a panic attack, which can strike out of nowhere. Sufferers have a paralysing terror that makes them feel as if they're about to faint out or die. To put your mind at ease, a panic attack cannot kill you. It's just that having a lot of anxiety might make you feel in danger.
 4) Phobias:- People often joke about having a fear, but phobias are a widespread sort of anxiety disease that should be handled seriously. When you have a phobia of anything, you are scared of it and will exaggerate any potential risk in your mind.
  How to cope with it?
In these covid-19 situation where every other person feels mental illness and very necessary to cope with anxiety which affects our body and destroy mentally which is equal to physical illness. Here are some methods  which might offer you calm and give little bit relax to your mind through some methods and they are:
a)Exercises in breathing and awareness. You can use a variety of strategies to relax, and we offer various mindfulness courses that will teach you some of the more effective ones.
b)Distracting oneself with friends, family, or hobbies is a good way to pass the time. Sometimes all we need is to be in the company of people who love us or to engage in activities that take our minds off of our problems.
c)Self-care techniques are employed. Running a bath, lighting candles, listening to soothing music, and meditating are some of our favorites.
d)Exercising releases endorphins and relieves tension, even if it's the last thing on your mind.
e)Writing has the ability to help you express feelings, examine worries, and determine whether or not your anxieties are justified. Getting your thoughts down on paper can be really beneficial at times.
f)Sleep is a critical component of mental health, and you can enhance your own sleep quality.
g)Eating a well-balanced diet. Because food is literally fuel for our bodies, it can have a huge impact on our emotional well-being. Learn how to use food to improve your mental health by taking a nutrition course.
h)Caffeine, alcohol, and narcotics should all be avoided. Each of them can be harmful to your health and well-being, therefore it may be worthwhile to avoid them. Caffeine, in instance, may not appear to be harmful, but it can make someone who suffers from anxiety feel anxious.
 Conclusion
Anxiety is a natural human emotion that is very subjective. While normal anxiety has a positive and adaptive function, it may also cause a great deal of pain for millions of individuals.
In order to avoid anxiety disorder you should have to follow exercise, eat healthy, more sleep etc. We are sure that advances in the treatment of anxiety disorders will continue to provide hope and respite to those who are affected by these illnesses and their families.
