The end of the road… Time to part ways from University
It has definitely been a journey, one that I will remember for the rest of my life… both for good and bad reason but either way it has been an eye opener for me.
I started this course thinking i want to get into graphic design, that UI might be my passion and that I will be a successful designer… but in all reality that is not the case… Whether or not there was opportunities to enter the realm of graphic design is neither here or there, what is apparent is that I didn’t do enough. I kept getting drawn towards illustrations, characters and landscapes. Creating that perfect pretty picture.
Yes I did enjoy making logos, but looking at them? They are incredibly illustrative rather than clean, sleek designs fit for business. I love creating imagery that is fun, pushing my skills to be even better with my realism and even pushing me more towards owning my own shop.
Honestly do I regret Uni? That is debatable. One hand it has shown me what I truly want to do with my life, on the other… well… that isn’t for you too know! Somethings are best kept secret! But know this dear readers, university is not everything it is cracked up to be. You can accomplish anything you put your heart too! A qualification is a piece of paper, however you as a person, as a creative, someone born to create are more than that and one day your skills will be recognised and you will go far.
All my life, education has never been the best but now I know that I have a passion for creating and my dream goal is sell, create and manage my own business. Although it has taken me some serious student dept to get to this point… I now know what my goal is. So in a way, yeah I don’t completely regret university.
Don’t let education stop you from achieving what you want to achieve. You are more than a piece of paper and you are a creative.

Inspiration again? It never ends!
My life revolves around the internet, not necessarily the social aspect, but more the never ending scrolling on Reddit, Youtube Videos, instagram, all these platforms that provide mind numbing entertainment.
So on todays, my daily ritual of reddit, as you have seen I have a love for Genshin Impact and the character Arataki Itto, so when I saw some fanart of a beautifully drawn set of eyes of various characters, I wanted to replicate that.
Tumblr media
Back last week, I spoken about drawing with more black line work and heavy brushes to create a stylistic piece. With the inspiration from Reddit User “Luhuala” I wanted to create something similar but with a different artist approach for my favourite character Arataki Itto
Bare in mind, my artwork is vastly different to Luhuala and was simply inspired by the eyes and I was itching to draw something.
Tumblr media
I love heavy line work and this was my first time using the charcoal brush on Procreate. After all these years I have never used the charcoal brush and in my younger days, I loved using charcoal; to be fair I love any medium so…. anyways I felt my typography was really on point and loved how clean the lines are. The signature red of the crimson oni really sells it and I am in love with it! On reflection however, I could of done the iris a bit better by really capturing how uniqie and alien looking Itto’s eyes are.
Hmm maybe I should do more artwork in this style?

Finding inspiration on YouTube!
As I do everyday, I watch a LOT of YouTube videos. From art YouTubers to video game reviews to watching a fruit decay and seeing maggot eat away at the fruit… yeah pretty varied stuff.
Anyways… I was watching one of my favorite tattoo enthusiast ‘treacle tatts’ (who if you don’t already go give her a watch if you love tattoo content!) and during her reaction videos to tattoo tiktoks, some beautiful black line work tattoos of a rabbit and other creatures was shown and my god was it gorgeous!
Tumblr media
Back when I was young, basically all of my artwork was heavy black line work. I loved the edginess of it and how bold it was. It has been years since I have attempted it as I currently love using colour and creating more happier and cuter pieces of art.
What I am about to show you is from 2012 and I do not have this piece anymore, so here is 16 year old me drawing of Predator with crude and terrible photography skills…
Tumblr media
Not bad to be honest and I remember being so proud of this, looking back at it I am still proud of it. My art journey was really beginning to set off and I loved creating art. Going back to my roots and what I loved doing, using the inspiration from treacle tatts video and that amazing tattoo, I decided to draw a rabbit that I found online in heavy stylistic black line work.
Tumblr media
It has definitely been a while since I did this! Although not my best I will admit, I had a lot of fun just using a heavy black pen and creating shapes, lines and texture. For all its worth it has reinstated my love for this style and I will definitely be doing this again and next time it will be better!

Rude bubble tea? Well why not!
I like bubble tea. I like rude art. I like drawing.
That is all.
In all seriousness I was browsing the web, you know as you do, and someone who I aspire to be is local artist to the UK Katnipp! Her work is simply adorable and wonderful. A professional illustrator, entrepreneur and overall lovely person!
Her work is so inspirational for someone like me who also wants to create and live of off their work. I dream of becoming successful like her but to get their is hard work, practice and knowing your target demographic!
Tumblr media
As you can see, simply adorable! Her little cup character is so so cute and once again Inspiration took hold! Looking around me I had a bubble tea cup from having Taro Tea - absolutely wonderful stuff!
Using both as inspiration I created my own piece!
Tumblr media
Suck me… So eloquently put… Not quite as cute as Katnipp, I might of made mine a bit evil looking… Nether the less without Katnipp I would of never created this… erm… character? Is it a character? No its just a cup… Or can it be a character?….

Another logo design! This time more alluring! ;)
I feel like as someone who wants to get into the design world, I am not making enough logos. So today that changed!
Using my previous technique of taking a shape, stylising it, choose a name and pick an appropriate font, I came up with a saucy logo!
I was in the process of trying to draw some lips and it inspired me to turn it into a logo! Out comes Adobe Illustrator and I began making a vector of my luscious lips (complete with tongue!) and created what looks to be an adult industry logo? To be honest I love the look of it, its fun, seductive but very illustrative. The illustrative part is what I need to work on, rather than creating illustrations I need to make them more professional looking but for my third logo who cares!
To get better at any skill you must practice, and practice is what I am going to do!

Trying my hand at drawing without a reference? Oh dear God… Also talks about Aphantasia - A lack of the minds eye
I am an artist who doesn’t have a minds eye. I struggle to see things in my head or visualise objects. To be honest it is quite frustrating now that I know others can literally conjure up a picture in their heads.
It is mind boggling to me that people can do that?!
Tumblr media
Drawing is hard enough as it is, trying to visualise a plant and draw it from memory is even harder?
I am not going to claim I have what is called Aphantasia - the inability to produce images in your head - but I know that I simply cannot see anything, no apple, no shadow, nothing. I cannot produce an image with my eyes closed, no matter how much I meditate, listen to music, think over and over again about what I am looking at. My brain does not allow me to do this.
So what does this mean for an artist? Eh just frustration with coming up with ideas but nothing more than inspiration, looking at refrences and creating a Frankenstein monster of an image can’t fix! What I mean from that is taking a ton of refrences and merging them to create one image. This in turns creates something new and something that I can draw from!
Well I am assuming you want to see my drawing with no reference? Well here you go!
Tumblr media
Not bad not bad… I did the whole “I am beginning art and don’t know how to draw hands so I hid them behind the character!” trope and honestly I’m not mad. Is it portioned? Hmmm nah? Does it look cute? Sure. But the point is although I could not conjure up this image in my head but I was able to understand balance in the face and recognised where to put the features.
Although this doesn’t look detailed or looks like it took me a long time… I tell you what… This took ages! I struggled so hard with this, it was frustrating but I persevered and kept going! It seems I am improving each step of the way but I recognise I still have more to go!
If you too suffer with Aphantasia or something similar, let out your frustrations and get it out of your system. We unfortunately just can’t see anything BUT its okay! There are so many ways to work around it and think of it like this, if you read this and think “Oh my god I have that too” you have gone your whole life of not noticing and will continue your life just as you were before!
It’s okay to be upset, in all honestly I cried a little but I have come to terms with it, I understand it and I have a solution to it! We are all unique and have unique quirks… This is just one of the many million quirks we all have as individual people!

The finale of my landscape paintings and a quick review of York!
For this piece, I was inspired by my trip to York, a beautiful part of the country in Yorkshire!
As I was walking through the town on a busy weekend I was in awe of just how wonderful this town is. From the castle walls to the incredibly old buildings, it was like walking into a fairytale!
Just outside of York station, a beautiful river (or was it canal? I always get them confused haha) flowed down under the bridge and I simply had to take a photo! Please bare with me as I am not a professional photographer!
I have learnt a lot about painting landscape paintings and I feel as if I have got better at it! I absolutely love this series that I have done and I am so proud of them!
If you haven’t already I would highly recommend visiting York for the day, or even the weekend! A crisp winters day with the sky clear is a definite must!

Still playing with my new brushes!
It’s been a few days now and I’ve created another piece using brushes that I have purchases from Madeleine Bellwoar! Rather then focusing on a particular art style, I simply looked on Google for a quick scenery reference and found the first image that inspired me the most!
Surprisingly I feel I have actually done a good job on the water this time! Water is such a tricky one to capture and I struggle to portray its flow and beauty, but I have to say, although the particular brush I used was a ‘pebble’ brush, it worked wonders as a water texture brush!
So far, experimenting with these brushes have been a real joy and I love the outcome of them! I might even create a quick landscape that I aim to translate onto canvas and hang up…
Once I get the hang of this, I am surely going to use these prints to create sellable prints for my shop so that others can enjoy it!

Testing out my new brushes!
What would be the first thing I should paint after purchasing Studio Ghibli inspired brushes? Well, a Studio Ghibli scene, that’s what!
To be honest with you I haven’t watched many Studio Ghibli films, but like many people the art style is what draws me in. I found this scene from the film ‘Porco Rosso’ which seems to be an iconic scene for those studying how to paint in the style of Studio Ghibli.
Here is the synopsis of Porco Rosso:
“In this entrancing tale by renowned Japanese animator Hiyao Miyazaki, World War I flying ace Marco Pagott mysteriously turns from a man into a pig after all his comrades die in battle. Now known as Porco Rosso, the pilot continues fighting air pirates while, on the ground, flirting with a gorgeous club singer. After an attack by a brash American pilot, Porco meets confident Fio, who repairs his plane with her girl mechanics, and sees him for who he really is.” - Taken from Rotten Tomatoes
I challenged myself to draw this as quickly as possible to get a feel for the brushes; by no means am I saying was I able to captivate the beauty that is of this scene (I mean I didn’t even draw the small building thingy - I have no idea what they’re called haha!) or even the immense detail that is within this frame, but I wanted to mess around with all the different brushes that came with this pack and see how I would go about using them!
Once I am more comfortable, I aim to recreate this image again but refine it and but more care into my process.
Art is not just a step forward but a journey of creativity.

New brushes for Procreate!
Most of the time ads on Facebook (or Meta as it’s called now) have little to no interest for me and I completely ignore them, however one ad sparked my interest… Studio Ghibli-inspired brushes by Madeleine Bellwoar!
To be honest I found them through a dodgy-looking ad, and reading through the comments I was able to find the original artist and shop to purchase these brushes! They cost £5.09 with commercial use and they look gorgeous! Not to mention her other brushes which I purchased…
Creating quick backgrounds and concepts have always been a bit of pain for me; I take way too long and then the idea has vanished… I indeed have a brain of a sieve..! So hopefully the ease of use of these brushes allow me to create stunning landscapes in seconds – I hope.
I will update you all soon about my thoughts and feelings about using these brushes along with some art work!

Just a little update to my design!
A few days ago I uploaded my logo designs and I think they was successful? At least for now I think so! Anyways, my ‘Bee Preserve’ was my favourite and as I went back to it, when using the pathfinder tool on illustrator, I noticed the bee left a nice looking negative space object!
I love how clean the lines are and how you can still tell it is a Bee! I tell you what, each day I am getting better at illustrator and its all down to practice!
If you have created any art piece, revisit them. You never know what inspiration can come from it! There is no bad art, just practice!

Trying my hand at logo design!
Now between you and me, I am a terrible logo designer. I mean I am still struggling to come up with a logo for myself! I think I make something nice come back the next day and BAM looks like s***…
Tumblr media
In all seriousness I just need to practice more!
So whilst racking my brain on what I should do, I came up with a solution. Pick an object, make it look cool, think of a name that would go well with the design and choose an appropriate font. To some this may seem a bit convoluted but to me it actually helped!
It got me thinking about logos in a step by step approach which made me have fun with the designs and not stress about it looking good. It gave me a goal at each stage to complete and at the end I would have a logo with typography! Something I never thought I could do!

Name change already and profile pic?
Hmmm… I really didn’t vibe with “A tour of the artworld” it felt too… vague? Not to mention it didn’t have any personality attached to it whatsoever… Whats more personality than my personality? So from now on this blog shall be called “Clarice K Art and Me”. Pretty catchy eh?
I have even got a picture now that wasn’t a weird triangle… Although quick, I was inspired by that old trend of having half your face a cartoon and the other half real life. I know I know I am incredibly late to that train but I wanted to try it out.
It took me what… 20 minutes ish? Nothing too long but it came out quite cute! I needed a profile picture so here you go!
This is me - Clarice K - and I hope you so far are enjoying your time here!

Arataki Numero Uno Itto Fan Art!
Video games are my escape; they’re what gives me the happy chemicals in my brain! Out of all the games I have played, I have never really had a favourite character that I can either relate to, or a character that I feel I can connect to… UNTIL NOW!
I’ve been playing Genshin Impact since its release, before the whole of Liyue was fully fleshed out… As a result I quit… Then again earlier this year I rejoined, created a new account and started fresh, and by the Archons I am so glad I did! After a single trailer of the new character - Arataki Itto - I was hooked. I saved my Primogems and Wishes as each day slowly came until his release date (That was yesterday by the way) and did I get him..? No.
F@£%.
Just you wait, I will update this blog once I have gotten him, in the words of Eula “Oh yes, mark my words”! …So what has this got to do with art? Oh yeah, I did some fan art! Mhm thats right, I actually made some fan art! A concept that scares me as I don’t want to mess it up, especially since it is of my favourite character of all time! Well here he is in all his Inazuman glory!
P.S. I couldn’t help but put a lil’ blood on his fangs so maybe a small trigger warning for blood? ^-^

YSP was so pretty I had to draw it!
Looking at the photos I uploaded I was inspired to draw the beautiful woodlands that was right in front of me!
I love painting landscapes and I should really practice them more! I love using a loose style that is so much fun and relaxing to do! Rather than focusing on the details and making it totally accurate, creating simple shapes and layering on colour makes for a more interesting piece in my opinion then just copying out right!
Who knows, I may do more landscapes in the future!

Going back to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
In my first year of University, the school took a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (or YSP for short). I didn’t know where it was, what it was or if it was even a park. Turns out it might as well be a bloody farm! However that is NOT a bad thing!
The YSP essentially a big and open plot of land on the outskirts of Wakefield, full of artistic sculptures (hence the name sculpture park haha!) and beautiful woodlands. It is also home to sheep and cows and better yet, you can walk through the very same mud and grass that they do! Honestly this place where nature and art collide is simply astonishing!
For some this might be a bit of a turn off, you know with the cow and sheep manure, oh and the MASSIVE hills… but for me? It reminds me of my family home in Ireland and since I love art, its honestly one of my favorite places to be!
I packed my packed lunch, grabbed my phone and coat, caught the train and bus and headed to the YSP!
Although it may be a cloudy day, the bright green fields of Yorkshire never disappoint! Although this is a Art Park, I found myself more drawn to photograph the sheep… Sorry about that!
Please be aware this is slightly NSFW due to the sculpture made by Damien Hirst that depicts a naked pregnant body with half of the skin flayed off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a wonderful place to be and the day I move from Yorkshire will be a sad time, however, I am sure I can make time for nature and art any day of the week!
