COVID Non-Trip Report

#StayHome

COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic is real. Julia and I are self isolating in our Seattle home. Quarantine life has brought some interesting changes. Here is a quick summary of our current situation.

There are ~1 million cases, with ~65 thousand deaths, of COVID in the world today. 300K cases / 8K deaths in the USA and 7K cases / 300 deaths in WA specifically. North Korea miraculously has 0 confirmed cases!

The outbreak kicked off in Seattle in a major way from a nursing home - Life Care Center of Kirkland. In February they had our state’s first death, which quickly turned our city into the epicenter of USA contagion.

Early March Julia traveled for work to Chicago and California. She saw the lack of travelers in the airport - a 25% decline but otherwise business as normal. By the time she got home on the 10th - corporate travel was being canceled left and right.

March 11th Umphrey’s McGee canceled their Rockjavik festival in Iceland. We immediately began the process of requesting refunds for our 12 day vacation. First major bummer.

March 11th was also the day DiscNW canceled all events. The governor announced that WA state was restricting any gathering over 250 people. A few days later that was decreased to 50 then 10. Things were getting serious.

March 14th was our last ski day of the season. A fun day at Crystal Mountain Ski Resort, where we’ve had a season pass all year. Our best day of the season the week before - our fitness and snowpack were both in great shape. It was shaping up to be a wonderful spring in the mountains. Skiing and Ultimate both canceled - nooooooo!

March 23-24 was our last hike. A quick overnight ski tour at Blewett Pass. Setup our Hilleberg tent on a shrinking patch of snow on Swauk Meadow. No real skiing to be had, plus we were attempting to take it super conservative considering the world situation. So we happily ate mac & cheese (off the ground) and drank no coffee (fuel ran out). Monday morning the governor was officially enacting the ‘stay at home’ order - the end to our wilderness adventures.

March 25th our apartment building was under contract to purchase for $1.4M. Back on March 3rd - we got a letter from REMAX notifying us that our apartment building was being sold. Our landlord and REMAX realtor coordinated open houses and inspections - during a pandemic. Not the ideal situation, but I cleaned and made it work. We got rumor that the new owner wanted to live in 1 of the units - and ours made the most sense logistically. Yay - house hunting during a pandemic!!

Julia contacted her BECU credit union inquiring about a home loan. We decided to attack it together as ‘tenants in common’. Got our cash straightened out (during a market crash, luckily before the low we see today) and loan documentation submitted. Approved for $720K with $80K down - geez they think we are rich. Search shows a few promising options in the $700K range. Mostly 1930’s era single family homes (we want a yard for Skye), 2 bedrooms, ~2000 sq/ft. However the stay-at-home-order now forbids open houses, so owners are holding back listing at the moment.

April 1st the apartment building contract was canceled - because of COVID uncertainty. Allowing us to put our house hunt on hold, at least until the stay-at-home-order is lifted. Deep Breath.

Present day -- work life is exciting. Many new and unexpected challenges. Ferguson is supporting ‘essential’ building projects - so our work continues. I’m also working on projects that have a 6+ month timeline - so that work also continues. Our sales associates working from home are in a unique situation. I’ve been creating solutions to allow them to capture credit card payments at home and in the parking lot of our branches. I’ve worked at home for the past 11 years, so this telecommute protocol is old hat.

Julia is as busy as ever with Flexe. Customers hitting them up for incredible opportunities left-and-right. Entire shipping containers with nowhere to go, PPE stuff, and other help-me-obi-wan type requests. Companies are seeing eCommerce traffic bigger than Black Friday with zero warning. The good news is that she’s working from home with me full time now and we haven’t killed each other yet.

Vacations have taken a big impact. I mentioned Iceland above, which was a trip we had been looking forward to for 6 months. We are also on the verge of canceling our trip to St. Martin with Julia’s family in June. Another big trip that hurts to cancel. Then we have a trip to Canada in July for a canoe trip. No clue if that’s going to happen or not…

Netflix is saving the day. We’ve watched Archer, Altered Carbon, Money Heist, but not Tiger King. Plenty of good content on streaming services right now. My back hurts from sitting in my chair so much - this could become a problem.

Talking about health…. I have lung pain. A cough for the past 10 days that’s unlike anything I’ve had before. I’d give it a solid 72% chance it’s COVID. I can’t get tested because I have no other symptoms. I haven’t come into contact with anyone known to have COVID. I hope to feel better soon, joining the immunity squad. Julia has zero symptoms. We are continuing to self isolate.

FYI: My beard is out of control right now. 

I hope the economy doesn’t tank for too long - my 401K is in shambles. Things are only getting worse at the moment. Every day/week we hit new milestones. The stay-at-home order continues to get extended and now the CDC is recommending everyone wear masks when they go outside. It’s wild times.

More news to come… peak pandemic will hit soon. Time for another dog walk!

Carnival and their Guest Experience Digital Transformation

When the world’s largest leisure travel company, Carnival, wanted to create the ultimate vacation experience aboard their ships, they realized they needed to improve the convergence among the physical and digital worlds into a seamless experience.

Placing their guests at the center of the experience design and empowering commerce capabilities everywhere, Carnival announced the OceanMedallion™ (at CES January 2017), a small wearable token connected to a specific guest, interacting with 7K sensors onboard. Carnival rolled out the OceanMedallion™ onboard the Regal Princess in November 2017. As the largest cruise ship in Carnival Corporation’s fleet, the Regal Princess carries over 3500 guests and 1340 crew.

“We believe that OceanMedallion™ is the next wave of vacation travel,” said Janet Swartz, Group President of Princess Cruises during an interview with Cheddar Media.

Transforming the experience with commerce everywhere

The medallions are connected to an ecosystem on board the ship – Ocean Compass, a network of thousands of sensors and smart devices working to provide personalized recommendations and a plethora of exceptional opportunities.

All of the onboard technology tracks where the guests are, what they’re doing, and what they might want to do next.

It may appear very Big Brother-eque and a potential security hazard should the medallion get lost or stolen; but the medallions are solely for identification purposes. No personal information is kept on the device other than an encrypted ID number.  All personal information is encrypted and stored in the cloud; and by using Bluetooth Low Energy and NFC to connect to the sensors onboard it creates an additional layer of encryption protection. With multiple layers of security, it works with a smartphone app and allows guests to customize it and do exactly what they want. Therefore, addressing any concerns of intrusiveness on the ship. If a guest wants to be left alone onboard, the medallion allows the system to adjust based on how much they use it. Guests may also opt to not wear the medallion at all.

In October 2018, Princess Cruises announced that all Caribbean Princess passengers will now have access to the OceanMedallion™. “Having 100 percent of our guests using OceanMedallions on every sailing of Caribbean Princess is a significant milestone that we are celebrating on the path to fleet-wide implementation,” said Swartz in a Travel Agent Central article.

Award-winning innovation 

The innovation that is taking hold both on land and sea with Carnival has not gone unnoticed. Cruise Critic named Princess Cruises as one of the top cruise lines in their 11th annual editor’s pick awards this month. It was also announced in November that Carnival will be recognized as a CES 2019 Innovation Awards Honoree for OceanMedallion™ and on display in the Innovation Awards Showcase at the upcoming CES 2019 in Las Vegas.

“Few accolades are as prestigious as the CES Innovation Awards and we are incredibly honored to receive this recognition for game-changing innovation,” said John Padgett, Carnival’s Chief Digital Officer to Travel Daily News.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the travel industry takes on experiential IoT in 2019 and what new trends emerge from CES 2019 in January.

I think Simon is more attracted to more reserved types of people, and would appreciate your softer, quieter side. Will loves that you are always willing to help him, and that you are so kind and selfless. Sometimes he has to remind you to take time fr yourself, and if you don't he will make you, aka, he will whisk you off for a day with just the two of you to relax, so you don't have so much to think about, or anyone to help besides yourself.

Best-Friend: In an alternate world, I imagine you being best friends with Elizabeth, and she was the one who introduced you to Will and thought you two would be perfect for each others, so she would sometimes set up situations in which you would end up alone together. Sneaky, sneaky. lol

I'm an adult, I'm Autistic and genderfluid (She/Her). I'm bisexual but would prefer a male ship. I'm really interested in cryptozoology, and I can and will talk your ear off. I love walking around and observing things, whether it's in a town or in the woods. I'm really witty and can make quips on the fly, I'm willing to laugh at myself when I do something silly. I'm only 4' 11" with long wavy brown hair and glasses. I work at a greenhouse and love physical labor, being active is important to me even though I don't do any sports. I'm pretty muscular and proud of it. I know tons about many different topics (astrology, mortuary science, mythology, biology, etc) so I can infodump about almost anything.
