A few days late but hey, better late than never! This is a non-comprehensive list of my favorite fics that I’ve read in 2023! Criteria for a fic to be included on this list are:

New Wave by yellow_caballero Batman (gen), 103k, Reverse Robins, Stephanie Brown is Robin Some lunatic in a bat costume is running around Gotham clowning on fools, but local delinquent Stephanie Brown has way bigger problems. When her father and friends start joining mob wars Steph knows she has to do something about it before Gotham collapses. If that means joining up with rich dudes playing dress up, pasty nerds with hacking and photography habits, and throwing on a costume herself, then that’s just what she’ll have to do. Even if Batman works alone. She’s convincing. In which Stephanie Brown rocks the radical nineties and becomes the first Robin, ruining Batman’s life and giving Tim Drake a hobby.

I’d hate to have to listen to anyone tittering at the next gala that you’re getting chubby.” And without another backwards glance, she turns and heads upstairs, leaving Tim alone and frozen at the bottom of the steps.

You, Me, and the Humanity in Between by JUBE514 Batman (gen), 65k, Non-Human Robins Bruce is trying his best to protect the city that he loves. He doesn't know how exactly his Robins came to be- they're not fully human, not even at all. All he knows is that he wants to keep them safe.

Little Red by destiny919 Batman: Under the Red Hood (gen), 39k, Series, Jason is Tim’s Parent AU where Tim is younger and has been illegally adopted by his hero, the Red Hood.

A Different Game by Hinn_Raven Batman (multi), 62k, Red Hood!Stephanie Brown, Role Reversal Stephanie Brown died with a mouth full of blood and her eyes wide open, staring at the locked door, hoping still for a miracle, for a rescue. She died in a hidden place, still hanging from the ceiling by her wrists, bleeding out from a wound in her stomach, and no one was with her when her heart gave its last beat. AU where Stephanie Brown dies as Robin and becomes the Red Hood.

bad news, this place is magic as fuck by mikkal Batman (gen), 28k, All-Caste Jason Todd, Magic Jason Jason's on the trail of a killer who's targeting kids in Crime Alley for an unknown magical ritual. Between that and his family who insists on butting in, he's got his work cut out for him. But, as they say, nothing is as it seems.

Wings over Gotham by icarus_chained Batman, DC (gen), 190k, No Man’s Land, Independent Gotham An AU where an altered version of No Man’s Land happened while Bruce was in his late teens/early twenties, and Batman was born in the hellish crucible of a trapped city that was left for dead and then violently retaken. Gotham may pretend to run by mainlander rules for the sake of those who would have died otherwise, but under the surface, Bruce, Jim, Leslie, Ivy and Oswald and their pack keep their own council, and look with jaundiced eyes on the mainland.

A Meditation on Railroading by eggmacguffin Batman (gen), 24k, Hurt/Comfort When he ends up ditched in Atlanta after a fight with his dad, Tim decides to do the only sensible thing: Tell no one and make the 800 mile journey back to Gotham on his own. Because the "call Batman when you're in trouble" rule only applies when he's Robin, right?

THE BATMAN (2022)

I’m a Good Pretender by shipNslash The Batman (2022) (gen), 40k, Dick Grayson-Centric Dick’s mother raised her son to be a star. Dick’s father raised his son to be an athlete. Bruce's new ward is charming (manipulative), dedicated (obsessive), and way, way too smart for either of their own good.

In This or Any Other Universe by wildsofmarch The Batman (2022) (gen), 33k, Dimension Travel There was a new vigilante in his city: a man who smiled too much and talked too loud and knew his way around a fight a little too well. Bruce wasn't bothered by his antics. Except the man also seemed to know a little too much about him. Who was this Nightwing, anyway? OR: Dick Grayson (DCU) accidentally lands himself in Battinson’s Gotham.

DC LEGENDS OF TOMORRW

Countless Roads by nirejseki Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 231k, Medium Leonard Snart, AU-Ghosts Due to a family curse (which some call a gift), Leonard Snart has more life than he knows what to do with – and that gives him the ability to see, speak to, and even share with the various ghosts that are always surrounding him. Sure, said curse also means he’s going to die sooner rather than later, just like his mother, but in the meantime Len has no intention of letting superheroes, time travelers, a surprisingly charming pyromaniac, and a lot of ghosts get in the way of him having a nice, successful career as a professional thief.

Straight On Till Morning by nirejeski Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Sara Lance/Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 17k, Time Pirates Left alone in the Refuge, Mick and Sara decide they're going to be proactive about their fate. They end up becoming time pirates. Because of course they do.

THE WITCHER

A Beginners Guide to Exploiting the Kaedweni Tax Code For Fun and Profit by Heronfem The Witcher (Aiden/Lambert), 190k, WIP, AU-Modern Setting, AU-College/University Aiden Kett and Lambert Wilkson accidentally get married, and this is honestly probably the least of their problems.

By the Broken Lock That Freed Me by inexplicifics The Witcher, (muti), 46k, AU-Daemons, Accidental Warlord Series Aiden takes a contract on the Duke of Velen. He's not expecting the most interesting part of the whole affair to be meeting the duke's betrothed. His daemon thinks they should keep her. Aiden's not sure how that will work, given that he's already got a Wolf and doesn't know how Lambert and his daemon might feel about adding someone else to their little pack, but it's awfully tempting. And Cats aren't very good at resisting temptation.

Clint with his eardrums trashed, Barnes with a regiment’s worth of trauma and a psychotic cybernetic arm, put in the same room and told to make nice while the others get to go on missions and do important things and save the world. Well they're not broken. So of course they got bored and tired of being sidelined and decided to entertain themselves. And of course they ended up wanted, running through the streets of Paris with bananas down their pants and gendarmes in pursuit. Of course they did.

Hmmmm. I don’t have many, and I think these really might fall more into the category of “I was a fuck boy until I met you”, but I hope you like these.

the way the storms blow by rbbsbb (E, 22K) What would happen if you walked in on your best friend in the midst of an orgy? Louis finds out and it’s pretty damn hot.

And Touch Me Like You Never by runaway_train (E, 36K) I really enjoyed how this author handled Harry’s confusion and growing attraction and eventual sexuality crisis. That, along with the angst and very sexy smut, made it a really good read.

Seeing Blind by zedi (E, 47K) I really liked the way this author gave a twist to both Omega Harry and Alpha Louis’ characteristics. It’s a whole lot of smut and miscommunication and, of course, a happy ending.

To Be The Friction In Your Jeans by orphan_account (E, 20K) slightly dated characterizations because it was written in 2012 (no one writes OT4/5 orgies anymore, do they?), but I actually really like this one. It’s simultaneously funny, oddly believable, and really damn hot. Harry-centric.

Young & Beautiful by velvetoscar (M, 227K) This fic is wordy and descriptive (which isn’t for everyone) and the characters are probably pretty OOC, but I love it anyway. I know that doesn’t sound like a recommendation, but truly the writing is poetry, the characters are so well-developed, the visuals and setting have stuck with me for years –– there’s a reason this one is a classic.

Into The Blue by zarah5 (E, 117K) honestly, I love all of this author’s fics, but I think this is my favorite of theirs. Louis as a flirty scuba instructor? Newly single Harry who just wants a fling? Boys living on other sides of the world who only have a few weeks together? Heartbreak. Hot af smut. OT5 friendship. Please….give me all that shit.

The light to guide me home by Star_Henderson / @tommosgun (E, 65K) I don’t know what it is about this fic but I’ve read it so many times and I just really love the instant chemistry, the smut is stupid hot and fuels the character growth, and even with the angst, the whole thing is just lighthearted and sexy.

Growth Mindset + Action = Manifestation

Last year I made a simple goal a degree before the next chapter of my life. It was a hard decision and was super taxing and scary, but after years of self sabotage I received my associates. This year I made 5 simple goals:

Enroll in WGU and complete a degree in 6 months

Pay off my student loan debt

Get a job paying over $65k

Get my credit above the 700s

Lose 50 lbs.

Here's the progress so far:

I enrolled, but had to re-enroll in order to get a new quicker business degree. I am almost done with a class (it only took about a week). I will be completing 2 classes a month.

I started out with $17k in student loan debt and officially paid off over $10k and I am on track to pay off the rest by the end of the year.

I hadn't even finished my course yet, but I received a job for an SDR paying $50k + an additional $22k in OTE = $72k + unlimited commission.

My credit was in the high 500s and this year I got it to 694 so far.

I haven't lost that much wait only 2 lbs but I still have 4 months and a lot can happen in 4 months.

This is my real progress and to be honest for years I had self sabotaged and didn't have a growth mindset I was very limited in my thinking. It wasn't until I accepted reality of "it is what it is" meaning that it doesn't matter what a situation should be, but accepting what it is. After you accept what a situation truly is you can began the steps necessary to change your situation. I have taken on a new mindset and started taking the time to heal that side of me that didn't believe in herself and I am officially enrolling therapy later this month. I also received a scholarship to learn business analytics. If you are stuck and in a rut I want you to repeat the words I have written below. Have an awesome day!

I am not my situation, I am not helpless, I will control the controllable in my life. I am powerful, I can learn anything, I am just as capable as anyone else. I am amazing, I can this. I can and will make my dreams a reality. My dream are possible. I am worth what I want in life. My work and effort will amount to a possible change in my life. I CAN DO THIS!

Harry glanced over at Ollie, who nodded. “Ok then, uh, Draco.” The word sounded a little odd on his tongue, and Harry found himself wanting to say it a few more times to test it out.

“Lovely, Potter,” Malfoy smirked. “What? That’s his name,” he said to Ollie, who rolled his eyes.

“I don’t want to fuck out here,” Harry said. He did, in actual fact, very much want to fuck out there, but Draco raised a fair point. Conveniently, there was something he could indeed do out there that he’d much rather do first. He leaned his weight against Draco, pushing him back against the wall. He ran a hand over Draco’s cock, starting to harden in his posh trousers. He pressed an open-mouthed kiss to Draco’s jaw, then another under his ear. “Can I suck you off?”

“You…” Draco trailed off. Harry could feel his throat work as he swallowed, moving under Harry’s mouth. “I’m not sure that you could. Not to completion.”

“I very much can,” Harry said, smirking against Draco’s throat.

need 2 figure out . a tagging system that in one way or another covers Every animal……

thankfully #marine covers like Most phyla. out of 30ish total phyla there are like 14 that are too bizarre and tiny to worry about. i mean tiny in both like quantity of described species and in like actual size. Have you ever seen a placozoan? I bet the Fuck Not. anyways I’ll probably do a worm tag because there are like at least 6 phyla that can be called worms. (22k annelids + >25k nematodes + 20k? flatworms + 1.3k nemertea lol + …..120 chaetognaths + only 22 priapulid worms WHAT. + a few other minor phyla. = like 69k described species lmao nice. don’t take my word for that tho these numbers are super fucking rounded) oh and acorn worms. whatever

ok then there’s. sponges ctenophores cnidarians echinoderms which are all not worms and definitely marine. im not gonna try to do a species count here actually. but that’s all pretty straightforward. bryozoans also in here. No special tag for these guys they’re just marine

chordata is like 65k species in total? and a solid 30k+ are counted under my marine tag. #beasts is for all mammals which is like 6400 extant species (89 cetaceans + 34 pinnipeds + 13 otters + 4 sirenians = 140 mammal species covered by #marine. if we’re being particular.) unfortunately tho I ddddddont yet have tags for amphibians reptiles or birds (except for a frog tag but I haven’t used it in forever and it doesn’t count salamanders. or caecilians can you imagine deliberately excluding those poor guys.) extra note there are several groups of mammals that get their own tags (goats sheep tamanduas and uh like hamspers i think. I would like to tuch it-style domesticated rodents.)

arthropoda is very very large species wise so im absolutely not going to attempt to do any species tallies but! the decision here is that arachnids, hexapods, isopods, and myriapods are in #entomo and everything else is for the time being in #marine. terrestrial crabs go fuck ur selves. marine isopods are in both <3

which brings me to mollusks. now for the most part this is simple. bivalves are marine. cephalopods are marine. chitons are marine. but GASTROPODS. have MANY TERRESTRIAL SPECIES. Including BANANA SLUGS MY DEARLY BELOVED. and I don’t know what I’m going to do about the terrestrial gastropods. and im too tired to decide now. Lol

Qualia (26k. Sci-fi. The one where Cas is a smarthome. It is unbelievable how well it works.)

Rooted in Memory (58K. Fantasy. Dean and Cas— protectors of Claire and Jack, respectively— have to go on a journey to find their charges when they disappear in the middle of the night. But they hate each other. Or... do they?)

Of Twists and Turns (75K. Pirates. PIRATES!!! What more could you need from me? There are not nearly enough pirate AUs in this fandom.)

Missing (93k. Modern. Dean is a detective and he goes to his ex Cas when Sam goes missing. This fic kept me in suspense the whole time. The non-linear narrative is so effective!)

Honey Pies (49k. Fairy Tales. Cas is curse by a witch to have pie fall from his mouth whenever he speaks. Therefore, he live a silent life selling pies out of his food truck. Enter Dean, an engineer trying to find a way to allow the silent to speak. I read this back when it first came out and it hasn’t left my mind since! I've been trying to find it again for a long time and I finally did!!)

And, of course, there’s my own 155k fantasy AU, The Angel, where Cas is an angelic wanderer who ends up teaching a group of promising young knights— including Dean— and, together, they end up changing the course of history by writing their own story.

mood: for when I need respite, a balm to the all-consuming shittiness of life

includes: fluff, comfort, low-stakes, slow-burn fics. a wistful look, a rainy morning, an unexpected grace, a stupidly disarming joke. i could live inside these fics. the smallness of human lives removed from the site of that which hurts & irreparably changes. the story-equivalent of a deep breath after a long day. pregnant silences & pensive mundanity & shy smiles. banter with bite but without the cruelty. the color lavender. weirdly whimsical. soft fics are not necessarily conflict-averse (no drarry fic rly can be, considering the context) but, they offer the reader a generous distance from the initial harm. they’re the quiet cleaning up after a storm. sometimes healing is an exacting surgical knife and other times it’s a slow scabbing. you read these fics to be reassured that the way forward is not always ruthless. and honestly?? they deserve a semblance of peace godDAMmit.

The Way Down by @letteredlettered - 65k - T “and I thought that if someone talked to you as though you were a human being you might—maybe you could act like one” --the way i think about this line daily. the characterization of draco in this fic is one my favorites bc he’s earnest and neurotic and tired of harry’s shit. which is to say, he cares so so much. and harry doesn’t know what to do with that bc he’s got a monster in his chest and lives as a recluse. but they both humanize each other in ways no one else can. “you’re just a person” has to be some kind of drarry ethics of belonging and it makes me CRY. -

Little Deaths and How to Avoid Them by @greaseonmymouth and dustmouth - 96k - T “Maybe it’s not about deserving it? Maybe you just get to have it anyway. . .I’m allowing myself to want something and to let myself have it and to fight for it.” --harry runs a daycare and also works at a library. draco spends a lot of time in said library. they bond over sci-fi books and therapy anecdotes and quiet philosophical conversations held over cafeteria soup. and harry’s struggling to understand his asexuality. draco’s learning how to live with anxiety and depression. they both want to be deserving of love. incredible fic with beautiful art by dustmouth. -

Open for Repairs by @drarrytrash - 35k - T “A few leaves rustle in the gutter and the muggle world pays no mind to them, to two lost boys holding on for dear life.” --all of their fics feel exactly like this. like you’ve been allowed to look at something private, tender, unexpected. draco, known abba fan, is a repairman in the muggle world & harry can’t stop breaking thrifted things in order to see him? say less, i'm thERE. also “I think I have a crush on you” goddddd - other faves by them: Counting Down By Ten - 2k - T: draco’s stepped outside of the party for a smoke. harry follows him bc of course he does. i could read this 100 times and not get tired of it. - Clouds That Veil the Midnight Moon - 36k - E: FUCKING HILARIOUS I CACKLED THROUGH THE WHOLE THING. draco’s wolfy problem and harry helping him and harry being flustered by how much he likes draco and draco’s hot heroic moment. shutup it’s perfect. “He almost asks if Draco ever gets tired of being a miserable complaining shit all the time, but he knows that he, personally, never ever gets tired of being a miserable complaining shit.” and “It’s the traumas,” Harry says gravely” --lines that live rent free in my head -

Harry Potter and the Future He Doesn't Really Want, Thanks by seefin - 70k - E “That was the only logical thing to do here, wasn’t it? It was the next step, it was the end of hurting each other and the beginning of the exact opposite.” --harry lives with luna and neville and also he dreams about the future sometimes? and he keeps running into draco. draco thinks this is sus as hell, until he doesn’t. feat. taxi rides, museums, cinemas, rooftop conversations beneath a lunar eclipse, mid-sex innocuous banter, draco and harry discussing nicki minaj. this fic charmed my ass off. seefin writes the most effortlessly hilarious dialogues. i smiled at my phone like an idiot at least 7 times. - other faves by them: Wild - 93k - E: “he liked feeling needed, for the things that he was needed for back at the house in Ireland. For cooking and gardening and driving. Easy things.” --this shit makes me cry it’s so good. harry lives in Ireland with these three brilliant, hilarious, wandless witches and draco’s a potions student who's come to study under one of the housemates and the boys have so much shit to work through but their love becomes so tender and honest. draco yells at harry a lot and harry lets him and they both keep each other grounded in something real and fuCK. - Divination for Dickheads - 7k - G: “I’m terrible at having crushes. I’ve never played anything cool a day in my life.” -- oh harry, we knOW. a bus ride, a fortune teller, an aquarium birthday party. god i love this fic. -

Modern Love by @tackytigerfic - 61k - E “But we’ve worked so hard at this, haven’t we? Yeah, I know it’s a horror to have to talk about it, but fuck it. We’re friends now, but it took so long to get here. Have you ever had to work so hard at something before?" --the steady blossoming of their friendship in this fic is so goddamn beautiful i want to yell. it’s draco and harry learning to trust each other and the whole thing unfolds so slowly, in this whimsical mix of london streets, wizarding politics, church halls feat. a Hot vicar, and a magical antique shop owner who’s married to literal poseidon?? goD the environment of this fic. immaculate. [also there’s a tender shower scene that makes me cry every single fucking time so if you read this fic pls dm me so we can be embarrassing about it together tbh] -
