200 Words A Day #31
Rant incoming! This is about the show of BBC's Merlin. A little background info, I watched the show four years ago for the first time and my favourite character was Merlin, but after rewatching everything the last few weeks, I noticed I actually preferred Arthur.
It used to be Merlin because of his sassy personality and just being a pissed off housewife. But I find myself feeling more and more frustrated with him, in comparison to Arthur.
Merlin mostly listens to others and prophecies. If he hadn't thought of Morgana of Mordred as traitors before they'd even done anything, the biggest problems would've been solved. Also, his entire life revolves around Arthur and his destiny. That's not really healthy anymore.
Meanwhile Arthur, he does what he believes in. He knights commoners because he think it's the right thing to do, he marries a servant and makes her his Queen, because he loves her. Okay, he makes some stupid choices (ugh ugh Agravaine ugh ugh), but he does what his heart tells him to. He's not driven forward by one thing only, he has his Kingdom, yes. But he also has friends, a wife and a best friend with whom he can act like he's not their King for a while.
I don't know if that makes sense, but during my rewatch it was actually so frustrating to see Merlin make all those decisions based of off things prophecies had told him, instead of doing what he himself thought to be right. Arthur gets told time and time again that some people cannot be trusted, and most of the time, they're right, but that's beside the point. He doesn't believe them without concrete proof, but he's willing to try and find proof (The Hunter's Heart, with Merlin telling Arthur Agravaine had stolen the maps). He does what his heart tells him to, and does trust others. He listens to others, but he doesn't let them make his decisions. He's not defined by his father's legacy, he is his own man and he trusts who he thinks is deserving of it. He knows the people aren't the King's servants, but the King is his people's servant. Arthur does what is best for the people, Merlin focuses on only Arthur and doesn't care about the consequences.
