He couldn't figure out what the ache in his heart meant. All he knew was that it hurt way too much for him to ignore it, ignore it like he did the past few years. All he could think about what was you and only you. Every memory he had with you kept plaguing his mind and he couldn't shake them away. These days, even work couldn't distract him.

He took to long drives at night, driving under streetlights in Malibu, oftentimes putting on your playlist, singing along to your favorite songs with a sad smile on his face, his face clouding over slightly. He would drive and drive, looking out the window, staring at the stars, wondering what it is that took you away from him.

Today though, he couldn't stand it. He couldn't stand the long silence he was convinced he was used to. He couldn't stand coming home to an empty house that reminded him of you, couldn't bear to drive through the night in the silence, without you chattering away about the randomest of things.

It was approximately 2:30 am. He was still driving, his surroundings a blur. He drove and drove, the ache in his chest growing bigger and bigger until he couldn't handle it. He wanted to scream, to cry, to rip his throat and make it bleed, but mostly, he wanted you back.

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry i couldn't make you stay longer..." He whispered into the dark of the night, tears making their way down his face. He gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned a deathly white, gritting his teeth and pushing on. He started accelerating, pressing onto the accelerator with everything he had left, his calf hurting from the pressure.

His tears turned into sobs, wrecking his body, making him shake uncontrollably. He staggered to breath, his cries and tears overwhelming him and he screamed, gasping out apologies and weaving pleas for you to come back. He clutched his chest, digging his nails into the fabric and sin, most probably drawing blood.

His tears blurred his vision, he couldn't see what was in front of him. He kept pressing down on the accelerator, his mind overheating with 101 thoughts a minute, all the memories of you flitting through his mind. Anyone who saw or heard it would say it was an accident, a mere hit-and-run. But anyone didn't know the truth.

He kept pressing, driving the car forward despite making out the silhouette of a vehicle moving towards him. through his tears. He couldn't stop, wouldn't stop. His body took over and he kept going. He was pretty sure he was speeding at this point but he didn't care.

He felt the impact more than he heard it; The front of his car caved in, the metal bits crushing his legs and chest, suffocating him. He felt the sharp sting of something stabbing him and he coughed, his throat burning as blood trickled out of his mouth, bringing tears to his eyes. He could barely move his legs and all of him was stained with blood. The glass shattered and seemed to find purchase in his face, carving through the skin and piercing into flesh. He could feel his heart rate slow down, his chest constrict and he knew.

"I'm coming home, Y/N...I'm coming home to you baby...just like I promised..."

His chest heaved as he chuckled, breathing heavily, coughing out more blood.

"Nothing can separate us now..." He whimpered out, his voice raw and rough as the pain reached a crescendo, before it all went dark.

He hid behind the pillar, watching as your eyes glimmered in the moonlight as your soft voice cut through the thick, starry night sky. Xiao leaned against it, the cold marble surface ice-cold on his exposed arm as he leant back, closing his eyes and concentrating on your voice.

This. This was the only thing that could calm the suffering adeptus’ heart, the only thing that could ease the pain and sorrow he had been going through for what was centuries now.

He longed to be able to see you up close, learn all the planes and curves of your features, discover all your favourites and all your dislikes. He longed to be able to slip his fingers into yours, feeling them encircle his hand as they lay flat, palm to palm. He longed to brush his fingers through your hair, and press kisses along the slope of your neck. He longed to be able to smell your scent on his skin, and his scent on yours.

But he knows, he can’t. He’s a yaksha, an adeptus. He can’t be together with someone like you, that’d be incredulous! Your life would be in danger! Besides, how could someone as broken as him love you wholeheartedly and give you all you need?

So he’s made peace with the fact that he was able to sit here and relish in the way your lips moved, and the way the melody effortlessly wove its way into the night. He’s content with being able to see you smile, and laugh and have fun. He’s happy as long as he gets to see the moonlight shine on your face and you stare up at the stars, the starry sky reflected in your eyes along with the sparkle of pure childish awe and love.

He’s happy with that, but he also knows it hurts the most to know that he can’t have what’s in front of him. That it hurts most when you and him are six feet apart.

When you’re having a rough night

featuring Xiao

You sit behind your desk, your lamp steadily burning as scratching from your pen fills the dead-silent room. Your hands fly across the paper, stopping every few seconds to check your spelling and once again, returning back to writing, the familiar scratching a soothing sound now.

But today was different. Different because you haven’t been motivated to do much since this morning. Something was keeping you in bed, you didn’t know what, so you just threw the blame on missing Xiao, who was gone to do who-knows-what. He’s gone every so often, but you understand. He’s a highly-respected Yaksha after all.

Sighing into the cool air that surrounded your room, you looked around, only to be greeted by lonely timber-like wallpaper and the smell of tea that you had brewed earlier on that day. Suddenly, a wave of overwhelming pressure crashed onto you, the weight of it temporarily making you lose your consciousness.

All you wanted to do was to crawl into bed, into Xiao’s arms and maybe cry everything out. It had been so hard to do even the simplest of things lately and you really did not know how to explain it. You just wanted to burrow yourself away and didn’t wanna do anything, your mind wandering and you just couldn’t focus. You were increasingly getting frustrated with yourself, slowly building up inside of you.

Soon enough, you felt your breathing stagger, followed by the salty tears. Everything was overloading on you and you couldn’t think straight, all you wanted, no, all you needed, was to see Xiao. Your chest constricted as painful jabs started up your ribs, worsening your breathing. You tried regulating it, but to no avail. In a state of panic and desperation, you gasped out Xiao’s name, chanting it like a mantra.

“Xiao Xiao Xiao- oh god-“ you squeaked out as you felt yourself calming a little. With a bang, the front door flew open and there was the man himself; Xiao, in all his glory. He rushed over to your side, cupping your face in his hands as you hiccuped, pulling you extremely close to him and placing your hand above his heart, instructing you to follow and breathe along with his heartbeat.

As you inhaled his scent, you felt yourself calming, your breathing returning to normal gradually as everything around you shut off, the only things you could feel and hear were Xiao’s heartbeat and rise and fall of his chest. You pulled him closer by his waist, sniffling and wiping away the tears that still clung to your lashes.

“I missed you so much...” you trailed off, as he pulled you in once more.

“It’s okay, it’s okay, I kept my word, didn’t I?” He said, his tone extremely soft as he kissed the top of your head. “All you needed to do was to call my name, love.”
