India’s electric vehicle industry is set to cross a milestone this year. Retail sales of EVs are estimated to top the 1-million mark in calendar year 2022, accounting for about 4.7% of the total automobile sales. According to data on the government’s Vahan website, about 9,89,000 EVs have been registered with regional transport offices till Thursday. The numbers already show a more than three-fold increase from 2021. The numbers do not include data from Telangana. EV fleet operators and individuals buying two-wheelers have been the main drivers of the growth, with new launches and increased availability of charging points, along with low running cost, attracting buyers. Manufacturers such as Ola Electric, Tata Motors and Ather Energy are the main gainers from the increased adoption of EVs. As India embraces 5G, with more than 50 cities and towns now benefiting from the new technology, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo stated on Monday that by the end of 2023, 75-80 percent of new smartphone launches will be 5G-enabled. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services on October 1. Telecom service providers have begun offering the service in selected locations, with plans to expand to cover the entire country by the end of 2023 or early 2024. "India as a nation is an early adopter of 5G technology. This 5G technology has opened a vast opportunity for a new generation of telecom equipment manufacturers, application providers, and internet of things (IoT), machine-2-machine (M2M) and healthcare services, among others," Mohindroo told IANS.
